Tom of Finland by Etat Libre d'Orange is a Woody Aromatic fragrance for men. Tom of Finland was launched in 2007. The nose behind this fragrance is Antoine Lie. Top notes are Aldehydes and Amalfi Lemon; middle notes are Birch, Pine Tree, Cypress, Pepper, Geranium and Galbanum; base notes are Suede, Vanilla, Iris, Tonka Bean, Musk, Vetiver, Styrax and Ambergris.

The water slips over him as if sliding down a marble rock, sinking into the grooves of his muscles, vanishing into his pores. This is fresh, pure water, with top notes of aldehydes and lemon, a water that washes away the sins of the night and leaves the skin luminous. Tom of Finland feels clean, like a shaving from a cake of soap. It is an ode to the beauty of the male body and to the radiance of the natural self. For this man, clothing becomes a jewel-case that serves to reveal the true erotic power of the flesh. Tom of Finland is a breath of fresh air, offering unrestricted access to the immense outdoors, the depths of the forest, with notes of birch leaves, cypress, galbanum and pine at its heart. Straight, gay... these words are irrelevant here. Tom of Finland is beyond sexuality – he is sex, in all its fullness and magnitude, open and erect. Fantasy clings to him like his leather jacket, with suede, musk, and gray amber in the base notes. His belt is fastened with an accord of pepper and spicy-fresh saffron, tangled with a blond suede sensuality on a vanilla bed of tonka bean and iris. This is a man who wants to play, to love, to die and be reborn, again and again. Tom of Finland is a tribute to tomorrow’s glorious possibilities.

You don’t want to get this one in your clothes, ends up with this sour, back of your throat vomit smell. On skin it’s interesting, definitely not mainstream. I’m assuming this would be very different depending on skin chemistry. If you liked Andrea Maack ‘Birch’ then this is worth a go.

This one elicits some real scent memories for me, but of an American man of a certain type. Definitely sexy, in no metrosexual way whatsoever. It's like Chanel's Sycomore and Cuir de Russie together. Very rugged without trying. Completely unassuming yet a class act of a man. Imagine the evening is cooling rapidly and a man in work boots has come home and showered with generic, classic soap after a long day, but the smell of the vast evergreen forest is still about the air, the unfinished furniture adorning the house, and possibly himself. His movements are the slow, easy, calculated motions of a person who does skilled manual labor and has a grip with vicelike potential. He's rolling up his sleeves for some relaxation and releases a big sigh but only through his nostrils. The sun has nearly disappeared.

Smells like a more complex and slightly strange version of Prada Luna Rosa Black. I’m a fan!

acidgypsycat

I agree so hard with the previous reviewer. This is the opposite of what I imagine seduction should smell like. I don't know why the creators think that overly sweet tonka + something salty + the signature ELDO's car tire smell could be described as a "sexy" scent. Imo, this is as far away from this concept as it possibly can be. This perfume has something so harsh and synthetic in the opening, I struggle to find an appropriate description. It reminds me of some bug repellent, honestly. Weird combination of notes. I had a similar reaction to the Ghost in the Shell but that one is at least kind of avant-garde. This is just a mess.

I wanted this fragrance to be as seductive as the description...it was not. I hated the first spray as did those around me and I toyed with washing it off...but I was committed to giving it a chance. No citrus at all instead it came on as strong as a car racing around a corner burning rubber. That note lasted for quite a long time before it settled in to a more sweet musk. Reminiscent of Fat Electrician which is an absolute love so between the two - the fatty wins!

Some one at ua fragrantica sad that it is perfect fragrance for kissing with your boy friends, not for dates with women.
Now to the aromat of it. Firstly it smell like suede.Yeah thats it, maybe with a bit of vanilla and aldehydes, but mostly suede.
At base it very pleasing and satisfying blend of soft & warm spices and vanilla. Those spices, with a view of the pyramid, probably blend of mostly vanilla and iris, with hint of iris.
If i would buy any pride fragrance, it will be it

deja1sabel

A fresh aldehydic heavy opening with a bright lemony citrus. The heart of this is very aromatically fresh and spiced, with some greenness. The dry down is vintage suede with a creamy tonka bean a musky and sweetly earthy iris. This one was thoroughly enjoyable!!

pessb

This scent starts off really mediocre, but once the woody-brash-this-is-for-boys crap blows off (on my skin, about 30 minutes in), it quickly becomes very distinctly the smell of someone cleaning their latex and conditioning their leather. Very sexual. Very in tune with gay and BDSM culture. In the drydown, it's on the knife's edge of unisex, just nice and warm. An afterglow, if you will. It's not MY scent, but the more I wear it, the more I feel it could easily bring out a shiny black dominant alter ego. I see myself mostly wearing this on dates that I intend to go very well, or if I ever become the type to attend play parties, it would fit in very well there. If you want a perfume that has sex with you, get this one.

Myrtillajus

Tom of Finland is sexy. It's a leather jacket over a naked breast, enhancing the perfection of the body and makes it even more sensual.
Characterized by a clean, ozonated opening, it gives space to the combination of pepper and saffron causing the illusion of leathery, decisive and enveloping notes.
Perhaps one of the few fragrances that manages to recreate a very precise and defined image.
I have a crazy love for this brand, which always manages to surprise and intrigue me.
Highly recommended, perhaps for the cooler seasons.
The wonderful drawings by…Tom of Finland.

This is the first leather fragrance that I didn’t absolutely despise in some way or gave me a headache, and that’s really saying something.

I don’t know if it’s the aldehydes and lemon or what, but that that leather note is extremely well hidden. The first hour I wore this I was positive I was smelling baby powder, turns out it’s leather mixed with suede and a lot of plants and it doesn’t show at all.

This is a clean aldehydic burst at first, and the first spray smells extremely reminiscent of baby powder. This dries down a bit, but what you get at the opening is going to be most of your experience with this. Sure, it’s linear, but it’s really unique and speaks for itself.

This 100% would be my new signature fragrance if it didn’t happen to smell like baby powder to me. I don’t mind baby powder in fragrances, but I personally don’t want to smell like it, nor do I want to be with anyone who does. But I still can definitely appreciate this on myself and someone else. (as long as I’m not trying to be intimate with them)

There’s a reason ELDO is most known for this, because this is a specialty. This is magnificent and classy, truly a work of art.

ImNosey

My mom was repulsed when I told her “this smells like you” as I sprayed it on her. She stood up and immediately washed it off her skin. My bad.

That first time, I didn’t realize it was meant to be a leather (I also scrubbed it off). Today I tried it again. Now it’s rubber. But it’s not a condom—it’s my grandma’s house. Instead of a rugged, leather-clad man, Tom is a Mexican living room all the way through.

Here I am sitting on a worn walnut leather couch. Scratchy wool blankets draped behind two or three layers thick. All twenty middle age aunties have come to welcome me home with a kiss. Their red lip stick leaving an ever thicker layer of wax on my cheek. I feel the concrete in the air mixed with the lemon oil from the heavy wooden furniture spaced evenly along the wall. Or maybe grandma just mopped. Either way I’m happy to see these faces for the first time in ten years and they’re happy to see me.

Phwoooarrrrr

Love this. Have been looking for something that sits between Tom Ford Tuscan Leather and Ombre but that's fresh and unique and at a reasonable price and this was everything I'd hoped for and more. Morning frost and lemon give way to woods, pine, birch and then clean leather jacket, suede, polished boots, with touches of rubber, cocoa butter.

Hmd018

This evokes memories of Halloween for me, strangely enough. Initial spray immediately reminds me of a fog machine, suede, and cold sunshine. It's leathery but cold, like leather car seats in the winter. Bordering on being rubbery. This is a very heady fragrance, but the middle notes bring this scent back down to earth. Super unique unisex/masculine-leaning fragrance.

southsequence

Picked up the "dirty" Discovery Set and initially didn't mind it when I tested it out among other notorious frags like Secretions Magnifique, so I saved it for a rainy day.

That day is today, and just I tried it again: A very work-safe and clean, musky fragrance barely radiated from my wrist...reminding me of Jovan Musk with a hint of a rubber (there was that ELDO through line - that "lingering whiff of condom") sticking out of a new leather sofa.

I tried covering it with something else, but those musks are truly the beefcake muscles behind the whole "leather daddy" facade. I don't think it's going to make it to another rainy day in this house.

TBonetheFella

Just got discontinued by the brand, but clean suede is apparently coming back! Buy your bottle while you can.

Payanp

selling 100 ml bottle barely used for 45 euros. EU/UK buyers only please.

dubdub

The opening smells nice and pleasant but i smell moth balls and condoms in the drydown. Also, too chemical for me.

ntabassum92

Tom of Finland grew on me, it's a gently sexy suede scent. I get a lot of the iris. Aldehydes, but not in a vintage way, just really clean and brightening the leatheriness. Like a nice soap that is more rugged scented. There is something in here that sometimes comes off animalic, but I don't always smell it - like right now smelling it on my skin I don't smell that, it just smells clean and warm to me. Unisex, nothing about this smells overtly like a man to me, despite the description of what the fragrance is meant to be about.

PerfumedParrot

Tom, I do like you and I absolutely adore Finland but I can’t get past the condom note. Once smelt can never be unsmelt. It’s soft ‘n’ creamy ‘n’ rubbery (oh no I just can’t). I will try to wear you but I’m struggling with the idea of the smell of condom around my neck. They sure like rubbery notes at the house of ELdO.

Odor Aeternitatis

I have tested most of the fragrances from this brand and Tom of Finland is one of my top 5 favorites. This is a very SEXY fragrance in its erotic sense. Don't be confused with the list of notes, it is all about leather on a musky powdery base. The other notes listed are to balance the composition and I can't even detect most of them.
It's animalic but NOT in a funky way, but in a clean musky ambergris way.

I see many people here do not like this one, probably because expecting it as a leather fragrance for formal occasions or a clean safe office fragrance or radiant fragrance. But this one is not for those situations. This fragrance is for your very private time. Those times you probably don't need a dress :) and this fragrance can evoke sensual feelings in your partner and make you wild.

Cherry_Darling

This is one of the best of Eldos in my opinion even though it's not technically my genre at all. But it's really well done, takes you on a journey and the leathers here fit well and aren't the usual eldo rubbery I get from other perfumes (often they stick out like a sore thumb here it goes well) Starts off somewhat tropical to me and sweet, but also powdery and airy. Not sure what is giving tropical vibes but a little coconutty even strangely. Turns quite butch - the usual eldo makeup base of the perfume works so well in here. Powdery sweet musk and plenty of corniferous spices (all subtle in true eldo fashion) make this one a predominantly male with the strong leather but ample sweet spice and powderiness to make it true to it's muse.

** 20x eldo set, 2 x 5 penhaligon sets, floris set, floraiku set all available for swap. Looking for UK based sample swappers happy to swap 20-50 samples at once - especially sets and niches but I have plenty of decanted samples too. Get in touch! **

OneThinksOneNose

Was expecting this to be a daring ELDO scent that would evoke a butch man who reeks of sweat, leather, and sex.

In reality it is unisex and leaning slightly feminine. It is a sweet, powdery leather and lime. Virginal, innocent, clean, and safe. There is nothing challenging about this fragrance aside from the brief rubber note in the beginning.

This is a young Tom of Finland being driven to school by his mother, smelling the makeup case he found in her purse as he riffled through it in search of lunch money, while holding a pencil eraser in his hand.

I'm not disappointed I own this, but I've been terribly misled.

Whateverwhocares

Airy, powdery suede. Soapy and clean, yet somehow nauseating. Chemical goop.

tailoredshirt

It's funny that lemon ranks so low on the list of notes, because the lemon has lasted all day on me. Or maybe it blended with the cypress and pine and is tricking my nose. For me, the strongest notes are the lemon (and pine/cypress), tonka, and a soft but prominent leather. There's also the smooth powdery-ness from the iris, along with a clean musk. I find it fresh, inoffensive, and leaning unisex.

WarmCotton

I'm impressed with this scent. It's very fresh and clean, and smells like soft suede combined with birch and pine. Leans masculine, but not in a loud chest-thumping way. I think this is a perfect everyday scent for a man, and it's sexy on women too. I've tried quite a few fragrances from this house. Tom of Finland, Exit the King, and You or Someone Like You are my favorites.

Hugo Montez

Saffron based scent with vanilla. Very cologne like, being somewhat fresh. Really good night out mid season scent. Projects well, lasts 8h easily and it's masculine. There was a time that i didn't care for it but my love for this brand made me revisit this. Pretty nice!

kencaovn

Suede scent is quite strong/ bold, balanced by woodsy - warm spicy - vanilla notes. Strange scent to me but pleasant to wear.

Lukasssss

The opening strangely reminds me of Santal 33. It is citrusy, cypressy, and slightly salty.
The suede note is different from other such notes I have smelled before. It smells a little bit like saffron, and reminds me of an old apron. Together with the other base notes it smells kind of like latex rubber while also being salty and foresty.
I am not a fan of this at all. It is weird to me. Had to scrub it off. 2/10.

exquisitecrops

I was reading how this caused a stir when it was released. The name and the alleged condom accord was provocative.

The perfume itself is tame and very pleasant! Tom is a powdery vanilla leather (in between oily black leather and a suede) with hints of berry-like fruitiness. There is a "breathy" element which makes this fragrance subtly naughty, but it's far from the exaggerated eroticism of Laaksonen's works.

It's a wonderful contemporary rendition of leather fragrance. If you ask me, I rather wear this than Ombre Leather.

Little Prince

Tom of Finland is (among many others) the type of scent in desperate need for personality. I tried this some years ago and discarded it as something very synthetic and cheap smelling. I disliked it almost instantly. I received a sample recently and have to say that it still is an unremarkable generic scent. This is the sort of fragrance advertised some years back by a handful of brands; derivative "perfumes" I remember categorizing as pseudo-leathers. After a brief fresh aldehydic opening, this one dives deep into a pedestrian faux-suede accord (saffron I suppose) with a cloying sweet musky vibe which persists throughout. Some fragrances have the potential to intrigue and have you want to acquaint the person wearing them. This one is the opposite. It would suit great a vile hipster who routinely arrays the names of records he read at Robert Christgau's guide and brags about them.

Joalo

Very sexy fragrance for both genders, 5-6 hours longevity, have similarities with rosendo mateu 5, but not exact clone

Trendkill97

Masculine, sophisticated, neat and clean scent with that tinge of birch and suede giving this a unique dry sharpness. The white musk with the iris hints make this one very neat, also has a metallic vibe to it. Another distinctive characteristic of the scent is that the aldehydes and the freshness in the opening is reminiscent of a more masculine version of Chanel No.5 EDT faintly, as it dries down there's a rather sweetened soft evolution of the scent, the dryness remains. Notes like cypress, geranium, pepper, pine, galbanum and styrax give it a robust old school backbone, performance isn't all that great, but this scent is truly unique. One of the best from the house. 8/10

Agent Strong

I don't get any leather from this at all. Just eternal, stomach-churning urinal cake. It smells exactly like Rein Incense Intense from the same house, so if you like the stench of aldehydes, you really only need one of these. I love You or Someone Like You and Fat Electrician from the same brand, but this is just disgusting.

H3thrr

Old Tom is a gentle fella. I got a sample and was delighted to discover that all my worries about "Dude on a Date" cologne notes were unfounded.

The first spritz made an interesting and unexpected welcome of some citrus and green things with a bit of something like ...new shoes? New something.

Fascinating and fleeting, that first bit, for just as I was trying to figure out the first few notes, soft and warm Tonka and vanilla and some very restrained iris drifted in, but managed not to be cloying, as they brought with them some pleasant wood and branch sorts of notes. Each was balanced against the others, and as the citrus faded, other subtle floral and wood-ish/leather-ish notes made a graceful move to the fore, but stayed in harmony and evoked warm skin and intimacy of the nicest sort.

I certainly understand why there's a lot of "for men" votes, but I am quite sure anyone who likes this general scent profile would be comfortable with Tom, and I think he's lovely in any company.

I saw he's getting a rebrand, but I would be much more reluctant to try "Clean Suede", not being especially interested in smelling like a handbag. Time will tell, I suppose.

TBonetheFella

This scent has a very very lovely transition from a bright citrus scent to a suede, iris base. I can see how this wouldn't be niche enough for some, but to me this seems more like a romanticized version of most modern men's fragrance. As if someone went to make those type of scents but for everybody. It smells like a better version of those clean mainstream fragrances that my dad used to have that I would secretly spray on myself when I was around 12 in order to impress my middle school crush. Not a direct copy of those scents, but how my rose tinted memory remembers it smelling. If you are a guy looking for a scent to dive into the world of niche fragrances: this is a pretty safe one to start out on. Or if you want a safe scent that is just different enough for a trained nose to sniff it out (pun intended), then go for this.

NomDeGuerre

Rebranded as Clean Suede – comes in a black bottle with silver cap/sticker.

MrBrady

Happy to see it's just another rebranding from the house.
Tom of Finland is a wonderfully wearable leather aldehyde. The aldehyde here is that fatty yellow type that works very well as a suede effect. The sweetness from the vanilla balances it, but thankfully doesn't overpower.
Of course having gotten the email I sprung for a bottle, but thankfully from a discounter at a great price.
Personally I love the ToF kitsch, and living in Helsinki's alternative district, there's a certain charm there for me.
But as always, it's about the scent, and it's a good one.

twoism

To clarify, ELDO has confirmed that this fragrance is not being discontinued but is being rebranded. It looks like the Tom of Finland associations are going to be dropped. It will be interesting to see what the new branding will be.

Acidula

My favorite from the discovery set so far.
I've tried all the fragrances on my skin and most of them have disappointing reactions on me. This one opens very fresh, manly and green, and keeps on evolving into different scents until it settles down to a cozy, almost balsamic drydown. Baby powder? Yes, a little bit, but I don't dislike it.

VETTIVAER

An inverted fragrance structure, somewhat unique in that regard.

A pleasant fragrance overall.

Ground hound

First I found it very basic- a light leathery aftershave.
It is after a few minutes that more notes start to open up closer to the skin- cypress, pepper, dusty suede, musk. I don`t know what is meant by "birch"- is it birch tar? Birch sap? Birch leaves?

Overall, not bad for ELDO, I`m just not a fan.
6/10.

MarkFL

Opens with smooth aldehydes and bergamot / citrus. Smells very clean. Fantastic opening. Slowly transforms into a powdery leather (I can see the tire / latex reference). Then finally transitions into a vanilla leather with some powdery facets left over.

10/10 for me, signature scent. Have gotten compliments, performs good, big love. At discounters can get for a huge price reduction. Fantastic.

PapaTLooch

Opening is quite harsh with a very strong birch that gives off a strong rubber tire smell accompanied with a lot of sweetness and synthetic leather. It starts off sparkly and kind of fizzy but very sharp and somewhat off-putting. The middle starts to calm down as it develops into a sort of cola smell to me. As the sharpness and rubber dissipate it becomes softer, more powdery and very different from the opening leaning more towards a fougere/barbershop scent. Dry down is pleasant as everything that was fighting earlier comes to a calm agreement but I do find it a bit headache inducing. It reminds me a lot of Tom Ford Ombre Leather and Tobacco Vanille. There’s definitely some hints of sweet tobacco in it. I don’t think I would reach for this often since it’s way too sweet for me. The marketing for this totally doesn’t capture what it really is. There’s a total disconnect between the imagery on the box and what I’m smelling.
Update: After wearing this all week I've developed no affection for it. There's too much vanilla in the drydown for me making it sickly sweet.

assim.hayderi

I came to realise that it smells very similar to Midnight in Paris from Van Cleef and Arpels after an hour on my skin. There is also something in the background which reminds me of Cerrutti a little bit but it definitely resembles MiP more.

peergynt

As per the review below, I may have a bad batch because the smell lingers only for an hour. Then it was gone.
So it is hard to review middle notes and base notes since only witnessing top notes which a little bit harsh for office day and hot weather.

eleccyman1

Beautiful smell I’d have given at least a 9/10 but, unfortunately for me, this was yet another scent I purchased a full new bottle of from Allbeauty website and, as I’ve previously stated on here, I think they are in the habit of bulk buying known dud batches of original products from manufacturers and selling them on at a discounted price to us unsuspecting customers.
I came to this conclusion because, on the very same day, I purchased the exact same item from a high street store that ‘sell fridges’ and I tried the Allbeauty one on one wrist and the other on my other wrist annnnnnd….hey presto….a very decent, long-lasting scent with really good sillage performance!
Make of this what you will but, having purchased many items from Allbeauty, I’d convinced myself I’d become onosmic. I will definitely not be purchasing from discounters any longer.
You really do get what you pay for at Allbeauty. Discounted products of discounted quality.
You have been warned!
So, if you buy this from Allbeauty, expect a 4/10 fragrance for about an hour and from the other alluded to store, a 9/10 fragrance for a good six hours.

waterydepths

i think that, in many ways, my interpretation of fragrances comes down not only to the smell itself, but to the image painted around it, by name, by description, by packaging. this is probably normal - after all, if those things didn't matter, every scent might only have a number, and come in a plain, unadorned gray bottle.

tom of finland is one of my favorite smells, and one that immediately draws to mind a few images:

i am sitting in a bathhouse or a sauna, and water with eucalyptus and pine oils has been poured over the steaming hot stones, almost transfixing me with the redolence and thickness of the smell. to the left of me, an older man has his arm slung over my shoulder, cajoling and camaraderie, a winking smile in the corner of his mouth, and i can smell his sweat as an undercurrent, beneath the steam.

me and a lover lay on a blanket in a meadow, the smell of conifers all around us, an old wicker picnic basket laying open. on the blanket lies a plate of meats, cheeses, and fruits. i wrap a piece of prosciutto around a juicy chunk of melon, and with my fingers feed it to my lover. it was a long hike to get to our spot, and so the sweat has dried to our skin, and now the dust of dead bark and mosses cling to us.

all this said, i appreciate the subtle fruitiness beneath the pine scents. i tend towards liking these ambery, resinous perfumes, so this definitely hits all the right buttons. one of my favorites, and i would highly recommend this to others.

Bllynch1

I love this scent! I do get the similarities with Luna Rossa Black and Bvlgari Black, but this is certainly it's own thing. While I pick up rubber in the others, this leans more toward like a latex or pleather. It puts the image of a dominatrix in my mind. Not blind buy safe, but it's an amazing scent which I love and find completely unisex. Performance is really good too! I think it could be pulled off in any situation as long as you don't go trigger happy in high heat.

Rated_mo

I've had 5 ml of this one ( red juice ) for 10 months now and I can't bring myself to use it

Very dirty powdery leathery smell like sweat with makeup powder , no season worked it for me ..perhaps I'm too young for it? (28)

tilapia_johnson

I love this composition, but you can tell it came out in 2007. This was the age of the "hipster," and the distinct, fresh-woody-leather combination screams that era to me. It is far from pretentious, however, and is quite wearable for such a collaboration. The aldehydes are nothing to be scared of, they just add an initial soapiness before revealing a variety of living trees and spicy-green florals, more dried-peppery than flowery. This continues into warm vetiver and plush iris, then vanilla, leather, and amber. This perfume is evocative of being in a sex shop for sure, one that is targeted mainly to gay men. There is, of course, lots of leather, rubber, latex, and powder, but there are also the bespoke fey touches of vetiver hand sanitizer and pine tar soap. This is clean, masculine, and, sexy, idealized in the same way Tom of Finland himself drew his glossy male archetypes.

AcesHigh

Smells like walking into a really classy old barbershop: warm human skin, leather, a hint of amber, good tobacco. I don't get much of the lemon note to start but I think the aldehydes dress it down into the background, as it becomes apparent in the mid notes after being on for a half-hour or longer. Very comforting, like burying your face in your husband's sweater when he's away on a long trip.

strangelight

Nothing I've tried from ELDO has really interested me so far, but this is lovely. Very tastefully amount of vanilla without spoiling the balance. Need to to test it more, but this is the first fragrance I've tried in a while to really tempt me with a full bottle.

likesleet

this was so interesting. it shifting as i smelled it, but it constantly conjures a really vivid picture.

i got this specific fresh outside smell that i couldn't name. then this aromatic sweet toothpaste mint. then maple, caramelized tobacco. and then a really sweet suede and vanilla.

meama

Don't hope for a leather jacket you will just have a sweater...
A lot of Cashmeran-like of aromachemical and a very delicate iris on an vanilla-amber base. Maybe there is leather, but in lesser touch, which brings a warm side to the composition.
Nice but there is so much better in the same type like Tubéreuse 1 Virginale by Histoires de Parfums or elses...
Miles away of being the best one in the ELDO line but still a good every-occasion type of perfume.
Never bad taste, never too much...yes strangely the exact opposit of Tom of Finland in my mind.

spritzspritz

Memory is a funny thing. I distinctly remember owning a rather tall and skinny travel spray of Tom of Finland as a pre-teen. Where would I have even gotten such a thing? I remember the scent, enjoying a spritz here and there, but knowing it was too mature and unisex for me back then. I remember the unique brand/house name, and it's also where I learned the name Tom of Finland a full decade before I actually looked up what he was famous for. I grew and moved and forgot all about it, then a month ago I came across Tom of Finland on here and and discovered it came out in 2007, which is 5-10 years after I remember playing with it. Could it really be the same fragrance as I remember? Did I get myself into a Mandela Effect situation?
I ordered a sample and it was clear from my first test that it's the same scent - sweet, aldehydic, orange & herbs, leather, rubber. So either I was older than I remember, or I'm a time traveller who just merged an alternate universe to ours 😅
Now that I'm older I can appreciate that it's complex, warm, and sexy, almost raunchy. The leather disappears, leaving a cozy, ambery dry down. Good for a date night.

ShinningLightOfThunder

Wow this is definitely unisex, not just for men, gorgeous scent. On my skin it has beautiful sweetness, and the woody notes blend in very smoothly. Definitely not giving this sample to my husby :D
Can’t say I detect leather much though.

phosgene

Leather, latex, soap and anal sex. Basically the smell of a darkroom. ...Not that there's anything wrong with that. 😏

mikemuscles21

This is such a beautiful fragrance. I always really enjoy wearing it!
I actually don't find it to be leathery like you might think, at least not in the way you think it will be if you haven't tried it before.

Animato

I like this a whole lot. The opening makes me smile. A fresh, clean and modern blast of aldehydes and fresh greenery. And then comes the sweetish, rubbery leather I have grown quite a fondness of ever since the first time I smelled Bvlgari Black (rest in peace, my darling).

I also find it quite elegant and refined although it is kind of rubbery. Should be naughty, it is not. So I wear this to work. It makes me feel professional but not too fresh and clean (and boring).

And then I read sam.newmans review today. Let me quote:
"This literally smells like leathery latex s3x toys.".

Well... Whoops.
Although this little lady will keep wearing this to work. And if I turn a head or two I will forever assume its because of what it "literally" smells like :D

reedkat_

Leather, suede-y perfumes can be hit or miss for me: too much wood behind the leather, too much musk, smells like a guy on tinder who calls you a b*tch and insults after you let him down easy. Not Tom of Finland. Masculine but not overbearing, dries down and wears beautifully, pleasant. I wore this to see "Zola" in theaters. Excellent for fall and winter.

Returntomonke

Okey-dokey, so Tom of Finland. As with most stuff with this brand what you see is *not* what you get. I don't have a full bottle, but I finished a sample and here is what I smell.

At first ToF starts with a blast of aldehydes. Fresh, soapy, refreshing. In another 10 mins the mid notes come forward and the pine, birch and geranium are noticeable. At this stage the frag is warming up. Almost immediately the base notes start to shinе. Vanilla, clean iris, musk, a dab of suede, vetyver, some styrax. It's the vanilla and tonka beans that are most pronounced here. The deep drydown has an emphasys on sweetness, with some piney, irisу, rooty nuances from the vetyver, plus something reminiscent of smoke. A modernised chypre, I guess.

Nothing unwearble, animalic, truly leathery here. People who complain of a strong suede/leather note have not experienced proper leather bombs.TOF is mostly warm scent, with some green undertones. Completely unisex. I am have a borderline hate for sweet smells, bit I tolerate ToF. I most likely won't get a full bottle, as it's not my style of perfumery. Longevity and projection are great -7,8 hrs on skin and an armslenght of projection for the first 2 hrs. As it settles it becomes a personal scent bubble.
On clothing lasts all day, because of the warmer base.
It's 3 seasons appropriate- winter, fall, spring, as it can become quite heavy in the heat.

In conclusion- a modern frag, with some green nuances , just a dab of smokiness and a sweet base with some green facets. No realistic suede .Nothing challenging or animalic.Agreeable, probably will gather compliments. An overall balanced, well-behaved frag. Good performance. Classy. Spring, winter, fall appropriate. Not full bottle worthy, as I dislike vanilla/tonka/ overall sweet frags. If you like ambers and orientals, give it a try. Can be found for a bargain.

Too bad Pride is in the dead of summer! This is a fragrance for moderate, cooler weather. A yummy soft leather/suede fragrance, a little sweet and a little woody. I can get some rubberiness from it too, reminds me a bit of latex, so it fits that theme really well. Basically smells like borrowing your partner's suede jacket. A soft boy fragrance!
I get the resemblance to Jazz Club, this has those same sweet leathery vibes, but much lighter. Also kinda reminds me a bit of TF Ombre Leather

KeefeDC8

If you are worried about this being "the gay fragrance", then you don't deserve it lol.
A masculine fresh, leather scent. Reminds me of new shoes and instantly put a smile on my face.
SO fresh in fact I look forward to trying this next summer at the beach.
This is too happy of a scent for night imo.

iris

While technically considered a "bright suede leather" , its main character impact compound would be safraleine, a wonderful substance that I discovered through Tom of Finland. It's like saffron, but more suave, without the vintage feel and the medicinal bitterness, bringing a strong leather facet.
Aldehydes are even more important here, making Tom of Finland both a leather scent and an unusual summer freshie! They emphasize its cleanliness (take No.5's aldehydes and you won't actually be that far), while birch tar and other rubbery components give it that challenging urban vinyl sensation, that was first coined by Bvlgari Black in the 90's. Not that they're so similar, but in both cases it's the feeling of something unnatural, glossy and a bit dangerous on your skin. Faux leather pants maybe. An Off-White rubber bracelet. Some kind of Haute Couture punk: the vanillic dry down envelopes all dangers in an irresistible sweetness.
Best of both worlds: a mood lifter and a modern Goth scent. I have my third bottle.

NoClock

The joy of this fragrance for me is its dry down. The way it transforms from something dark and intense into something smooth and sweet is very interesting. It’s delicacy wrapped in leather and latex that slowly reveals itself throughout the day. For me it’s a very fun casual fragrance, sexy but still versatile. My favourite from the line that I’ve tried.

Arber Cami

This is a fresh/aldehydic, aromatic leather scent. More aromatics and leather. Its ok, nothing groundbreaking.

internetdad.jpg

It kinda reminds me of Jazz Club except they swapped out the tobacco and rum for burnt leather, talcum-covered latex, and vanilla-flavoured lube. Sadly it's a no for me - I wanted cartoonish hyper-masculinity and got circuit party f**kboy. On a more positive note, this is what Moschino's Toy Boy should've smelt like!

Mishitsu

this fragrance gives Tom justice...its sinful as it can get. Leather punch that gets more smoky than sweet at the end. Very potent. Reminds me a lot of Berlin, please don't ask why

hexed

This would make a nice leather for spring-summer, it's quite fresh, sweet and clean. For good boys & girls. Very modern, I don't really get any galbanum. Lasts very well on me, there's a powderiness that lingers. I'm certain I'd enjoy it a lot more on someone else. It's a safe daytime scent that might let you flag your preferences when asked about what you're wearing.

kingderella

I get suede and vanilla. The vanilla is not as loud as in some other iconic gay fragrances (Le Male, Joop! Homme), and the entire composition is not as crass as you might expect from a fragrance inspired by pornography. It's masculine and sexy in a relaxed, rich, confident way. You can wear this to the office, no one will be put off. Decent performance.

dsgnmind

I write my reviews for my own future reference.

What I've learned from this brand is to really wait and see. Could go good or not great. In the case of Tom of Finland, it unfortunately is the later. What starts out as Tom mowing the lawn in crisp air, proving a brief moment of very slightly sweet fresh cut grass turn to him going inside inside and fiddling with plastic model car kits, specially the tires which have a particular smell to them, or other, dare I say, plastic action figures. Whatever the goal was here it is lost on me, and other houses seem to have done more with Tom, dressed him up and made him more mature.

sam.newman

This literally smells like leathery latex s3x toys. I guess it is fits the theme.

Josu01

Tom of Finland is simply amazing.

It's like wearing a sexy suede jacket, since suede is present in all the stages of the perfume.

When the basenotes appear, the suede is sweetened with the vanilla and tonka notes, with a touch of iris, giving it a powdery touch.
The dry down is good and very light, very close to the skin, with a bit of sexy musk.

Tom of Finland smells great, it's easy to wear, it's light, office friendly, and good in high temperature, this is very versatile, and can be used year round.

brokesta911

ELDO Tom of Finland (2007) - suede cypress - a beautiful and unique creation by #antoinelie Starts the journey with sunny & waxy Aldehydes, spicy Pepper, rose-like Geranium with Pine and Cypress. Then, this transitions to a smooth Suede mixed with Iris, Vanilla, Tonka beans, and an Ambergris-like accord. It’s as if both scent associations were alien (i.e the top and drydown) yet meant to be. Well-made and will interest a perfume collector for days.

Glyph

Given the name, this was obviously formulated and marketed with the permission of the Tom of Finland Foundation, so I knew this would have to evoke Tom's famous homoerotic artwork in a way the Foundation would approve. And yes indeed, this evokes nothing so much as a dungeon with its strong potent mixture of leather (suede and birch), animalic ( ambergris), and dankness aromas (cypress and musk).

My disappointment with this is that it's just not very sexy to me--it smells like you've entered a strange basement room where someone entirely unknown to you has had sex. I admire this, but I would not wear it.

Billy Bodega

This actually reminds me of Jazz Club (lemon on top, styrax and vanilla on bottom). In both cases I want to like more than I do. They each promise something dirtier and more rugged but deliver a basic soapy scent. Not enough oomph. Though I did overhear someone say it smelled nice when she walked into a shop where I stood by the door. (I'd layered my sample with Molecule 01.)

Skwirlman

Just grabbed a bottle of this stuff. It’s incredible. If you’ve smelled the zoologist line, this one is the original rhinoceros but fresher n dries down to elephant or hints there of. Great fragrance and for me it does speak to the characters of Tom of Finland. Masculine and powerful dandies at heart. Bingo

Ksj_

This is a nice fragrance and has a lot of potential to be great. However, the familiarity of another fragrance overtakes me and it loses its uniqueness because of this. I wish I could put my finger on what this reminds me of.

Side note:

Give it a try, it’s worth sampling. It may be FBW to you.

Deelecto

This one’s right in the middle of a Venn diagram of things I love. On the one side, old-school masculine floral leathers, alongside Knize Ten, Lalique Homme (Lion), and Dia Man. On the other side are the sexy inviting scents, masculine fragrances that beckon someone to lean in really close ... and then closer still - ones like L'Homme Ideal EDP, Ambre Nuit, Tuxedo or Rochas Moustache.

As usual with ELdO, the marketing is fanciful and a lot of fun, but doesn't really capture the scent for me. This isn't aggressive, it's a seductive skin scent. I think the leather daddies from the great art in the package would be wearing Moustache, not this ;)

One I'll always want to have handy in a bottle on the shelf.

thefondest

Very immediately became one of my favorites in my ELDO mega-sampler. Iris, aldehydes, and leather are the strongest notes, and the overall effect is so refreshing. There is something undeniably comforting about this scent, and I reach for it often. So jubilant and innocent. And there's something endearing about that innocence when you connect it to the name of Tom of Finland. There is a subtle, old school leather daddy vibe to this scent, but in a very playful, safe, inviting way. It smells like shopping for harnesses at a really nice, friendly store, or getting all dressed up alongside a loving partner. It makes me imagine the casual reality behind, say, going to a sex party at The Ansonia or the Eagle in ‘70s New York. It doesn’t smell like the party itself as much as it feels like the preparation behind it, or walking to the venue on a brisk summer evening. Within that lens of late 20th century queerness, there’s something very humanizing about this perfume. It’s not campy or exaggerated, the way you might expect from anything else bearing the name of “Tom of Finland.” It makes me imagine the buildup to queer sex through the eyes of real people, just enjoying a night out, getting to know strangers. They’re putting thought into how they look before they go out, because they want to look nice, and communicate the right image. They take community seriously, and they know that the way they look is an important signifier of how they engage within that community. There’s a lightness to pleasure, but an urgency to it at the same time. They know to seize it, and not to take it for granted.

I smell Tom of Finland and imagine a longtime couple walking through midtown New York, all decked out in clean leather. They’ve known each other forever, but they get that old honeymoon feeling when they’re on the way to somewhere sexy, like they’re courting again. They’re walking slowly after a couple of hours in the mirror, because they know the night is young, and they’re in no rush. They flirt, and giggle, and make sure to tell each other that all that time getting ready paid off. They’re just enjoying each other’s company, and that perfect, brisk air of a summer night in the city.

And I love that image I get from the Tom of Finland perfume, but there is conversely something about it that makes me sad. When I smell this very innocent perfume and remember its association with the brand of Tom of Finland, it’s hard not to feel a sense of queer assimilation within it. This scent is very low-key and approachable, and that’s just not what Tom of Finland is. Sure, there is something very sweet and playful about the way ToF portrays male sexuality, but it is, above all, very outrageously horny! It is, after all, porn! The goal is to shock and titillate, and I wish I got that feeling from this perfume. Why isn't that ambergris stronger? What is a fresh, pristine note like lemon doing in here? I do love the bright, powdery aspects of this scent, but I wish there was some deeper funk in here, like seaweed, or cumin, or both. This is the company— and perfumer!— that made Secretions Magnifique! Where is the actual gay sex in their perfume that's supposedly devoted to a celebration of it? And I just hate to have that question in my mind when I smell Tom of Finland. I hate to see how much people seem to want queerness to feel more approachable, and less outré, or off-putting. Like, wasn’t that the point of coming out? To boldly live outside the mainstream, to pursue wild experiences, to experience sex in the ways society so loudly tells us we shouldn’t? Queer sex has become less and less visible as "queerness" becomes more and more acceptable to the mainstream, and that doesn't feel like an accident. I wasn’t alive before AIDS, but I’m old enough to remember the severity of the aftermath. The definitive, popular reaction to queer sex has been fear for a lot of my life, and it clearly still is in some way. That increased visibility and safety for queer people has come at a pretty significant cost that we don’t talk about. Like, “You can be yourself in public, but not so loudly. Don’t make sex too much of a part of the conversation, because we don’t want to hear about it. Go ahead and celebrate, but the sons of the cops your ancestors fought will be watching you from the sidelines.”

And I don’t like that Tom of Finland makes me think about that. I smell it and imagine a rich history of queerness, but not in the way it wants me to. It’s really beautiful, but I kind of wish it weren’t explicitly related to Tom of Finland. The olfactory equivalent of that name should be gaudier, louder, less clean. Where’s the bold, spicy Studio 54 feeling of something like Halston, or Opium? Why is this scent so quiet, and apologetic, and gone so fast? I don’t know Antoine Lie’s sexuality, but if he isn't straight, I imagine his sexuality is very respectable. And maybe it isn't his fault— maybe Tom of Finland was looking for a rebranding, and wanted to veer away from their popular image in some way. But I feel like the best creative team for something like this would've involve a handful of people who've seen Tom of Finland illustrations and felt excited— like, sweaty, nervous, What am I looking at? Is this me? People who have lived lives that look and feel like those images, who aren't afraid to make that known. I wish I felt that boldness, that enthusiasm for sex and life in this perfume. ELDO's Tom of Finland is a stunning scent, and I love it for what it is, but it’s hard not to question what it ultimately says, or mourn what it could’ve been.

Caldrumr

Okay, I like this a lot.
It is somehow masculine and feminine at the same time. And I don't mean unisex. I mean almost like two perfumes - a macho masculine one, with an airy floral and feminine one beneath it.
And that makes for a very interesting combo.
Aldehydic florals, synthetic suede, woods, lemon and a vanillic base.
Like our guy, confident in his sexuality, out in the woods with his over-the-top beige suede jacket, sprays on a heady floral perfume, and takes a stroll through the crisp Autumn air.
It's interesting, it's fragrant, and I am into it.

The Scene: You're on a vacation staying in a log cabin in the woods. You step out of the shower and dry off, putting on some baby powder and then throwing on your favorite snuggly grey sweater when you hear a knock on the cabin door. Dressing quickly, you go to see who it could possibly be here in the middle of nowhere, and to your surprise, who it it but Freddie Mercury, half-naked and ready to make some music, if you know what I mean!

To me, it starts off very woodsy, almost cedar-y or sandalwood-y, and a little lemony, and then immediately starts abandoning that to become a more powdery, soapy scent. Up close, it seems the pepper accord and the acrid scent of what I'm guessing must be the aldehydes combines into this weird rubber-y, latex-y, fake leather-y smell---yuck!!! And then the dry down is a weird sort of soapy, powdery musk that tickles the nose.

I kind of like the woodsy opening, which is a shame considering the dry, soapy, baby powder-y scent it ends up becoming!

I'm happy I got this in a big sample pack, cause in my opinion, this wouldn't be a good fragrance to blind buy.

To other people, though, this might be a good, low-key, around-the-home-or-office kind of scent because of its softness and subtlety. But that depends on whether or not you're into smelling like literal talcum powder! xD

hotrodangel

It's interesting. Lemon sherbert and leather. I don't get much pine or cypress, more of a juicy citrus scent with a vanilla-musk backbone. After having the misfortune of smelling Secretions Magnifiques, I was terrified to try anything else from ELDO, but there's nothing repulsive about this one. A little sweet for my taste, but it's certainly unique.

103057

I wasn't sure what I'd think of this one before I tried it, because it contains a lot of notes I love (pine, birch, cypress, galbanum) and a few that I generally detest (tonka beans, aldehydes). Now that I've smelled it, I'm still not sure what to think!

This opens with aldehydes and lemon, but a latex/rubber/leather note immediately joins them. It fluctuates between smelling like suede, tyres, and balloons - very odd. I don't detect much sweetness at first, though there is a hint of it in the background.

I start to get sweetish iris after half an hour or so. The drydown is vanillic suede.

It's unique, certainly; I can see how some might perceive it as a kinky sort of scent, though to me the odd leather/rubber accord evokes gym equipment more than anything else - the latex and leather combined in a boxing glove, for example. It makes me feel like going out and doing something athletic - which I guess isn't completely unrelated to the theme of the fragrance after all.

Where would I wear this... I'm not sure. I think it would feel odd to wear at work, since though it isn't dirty it does make me think of a gym. I don't find it especially outdoorsy, and the projection isn't strong enough to hold up well outside anyway. It's not strong enough to be a clubbing scent even if I went clubbing, which I don't. It's just a bit of a misfit overall; I guess I'd wear it at home or to the grocery store.

All that said, I like it, and it's definitely interesting. It does lean distinctly masculine, in my opinion, but not in the same way as a classic barbershop fragrance or anything like that. And given how unusual it is, I expect a woman wearing it would not cause anyone to bat an eye - though truthfully, I think the same goes for most fragrances. As it is unusual, this is definitely not a good one to blind-buy.

The leather scene is very much grizzly bear on the outside, teddy bear at heart, just like this perfume. It flirts with all the topoi of masculinity, but makes it camp and in doing so offers something much more interesting and layered. Love it.

behemotha

Quickly became one of my favourite winter scents. Warm milk, rubber, powder, lubricant, leather, vanilla, latex.
Be cautious with the spray, though - two sprays stay on my skin for the next 24 hours (at least). Not to mention fabric - a month can pass and I'd still catch a whiff.
Another blind buy I don't regret.

Smells like a shoe store. In a good way.

*loves_shoes*

This one is strong, but at first it seems surprisingly sweet and floral for a fragrance described specifically male and not unisex. This smells much more unisex to me than many others that are branded that way.
At first I was surprised by the sweetness, and thought that I would wear this myself (I usually lprefer female branded fragrances). At first it is lemon and pine, but also vanilla and flowers from the start. As it settles in I still smell a lot of vanilla, but also pepper, pine and geranium (or something sweet and flowery). I don’t smell many male frags to compare, but this smells unusual to me The floweryness wears off quickly and it is a warm, peppery vanilla smell. Then just warm soft leather, like a bit of an old man scent to me, but it has enough going on to keep it kind of modern feeling. Maybe it smells like an old man who just got washed with a kind of pine or hint of lemon soap, then put a leather scent on. This isn’t warm spicy or me at all, and is kind of a light, fresh take on a leather scent.
After the dry down I’m no longer sure I would wear it, as it leans towards a male scent to my nose, but there is something captivating about this one. I think I’ll give it to the boyfriend to try, if he can get past the initial sweet notes and can bear the old-man kind of ending…. I think it’s got something different everytime you take a sniff, so I’m hoping he will like it!
Update, the boyfriend likes it! Yay! Well this is on me 4 hours later, but you can still smell it.

RainbowGirl

Golly, this smells great. It IS manly, but still something I would wear. It smells fresh, a little bitter, a little sweet and a lot like a lumberjack. Fucking fabulous.

Ersatz

Close but no cigar, quite literally. Don't get me wrong: there is absolutely nothing wrong with this fragrance. In fact, it's an elegant, sartorial male juice that could quite readily have been commissioned by a more discerning mainstream luxury brand under another name. So, what's in a name. Well, when you bring our a juice called Tom of Finland and seek to exploit all of the attributes, including the olfactory attributes, of the underground leather gay that inspired artist Tom of Finland and that he, in turn, inspired, how could you possibly bring out a fragrance that even acknowledges suede, yet not leather, in its notes?

Again, this is a fine fragrance.... for a dapper gentleman with a penchant for good tailoring. But it's most certainly not something that evokes Tom of Finland's archetypal leather man. Nor, I suspect will it appeal to many leather queens in a subculture where men frequently espouse the joys of "man smells" and a dislike of "feminine colognes". While the clean, fresh spicy notes are extremely pleasant, perhaps that's the problem: Tom of Finland world is one of sweat-infused leather, male pheromones, smoke and strong liquor.

With such a rich and evocative source of inspiration, I had hoped to be surprised with something dripping in leather and animalic smells drawn together in a clever way. I was, however surprised, actually disappointed, in a very different way. Top marks for a stylish men's fragrance. Nil points for even suggesting that it somehow relates to the iconic fetish Utopia created by Tom of Finland. Complete fail for Branding 101.

Bubbles1964

Hello Big Daddy, come to Mama.

A leather scent for those that don’t normally like to wear leather. A dominant, spicy citrus opens along with a new car smell, turning softer into a sweet wood scent. It’s a fun, creative, and a nature-inspired composition. Yes it leans masculine but anyone can wear it. I love this ELDO.

spiegelsaal

Have a decant and like it enough to plan to buy a full bottle. That said, the Tom of Finland branding is way off -- this is less musclebound leather daddy and more a brunching ex-twink in Banana Republic chinos. Also reminds me of Kelly Caleche somewhat.

LesGirls

The name of this is apt, as it smells like Provincetown Bear Week. If you know, you know.

TREVRmusic

Simple review for a simple fragrance...
Fun and creative scent!

Definitely leather focused more than anything else but not over-bearing like a Tuscan Leather. I've driven Uber in San Francisco long enough to tell you this really does smell like the nostalgia of taking someone home with you from the club/bar. This smell is a mindset and mood to the core.

The longevity and performance doesn't meet my standards but I'd imagine for the right person this would be a night out signature! Happy hunting, everyone. :)

elledeelee

Holy crap this is good! Chin on the floor good. Rubbery leather and sweet citrus vanilla, like nothing I'd smelled before. Very very very very VERY sexy. I just wish it lasted longer!

trabuquera

The smell of a rushed but delightful backseat fumble with someone fun. Cheeky, squeaky, sweet and spicy, with unmistakeable tangs of new-car plastic, sunbaked vinyl seat covers, condoms (???) and some bouncy rubbery upholstery. Doesn't last long, is unlikely to truly rock your world or make you see stars, but still gives you a warm feeling inside. Heh heh heh.

Like ELDO's Marquis de Sade, this is much drier, warmer, and more friendly than the name would suggest - no wild xxxtreme adventures, just gentle good times with no sense of lurking threat. Absolutely nothing brutal about it - even the birch and leather are not walking on the wild side here: all is soft and suedelike and really pretty welcoming. The bottom end (heh heh heh again) is really charming, never all the way to gourmand (or even femme) but delightfully balanced and mellow between the vanilla, tonka, ambergis, iris teaming up to shade themselves into the smell of 'your own skin but better'. There isn't a whole lot of zing or bite - no detectable burn of pepper or tang of cypress to my nose, I could have sworn it was made mostly of chewy resins and warm spice - though was sampling from a very well-aged vial so maybe the citric notes died during its time in transit.

Reminded me oddly most strongly of Ormonde Jayne Tolu, which is from a whole other universe and doesn't have many notes in common. Any gender could wear it, you don't have to be scary or male yourself to spend time with this particular Tom of Finland, but those demanding real psychodrama and individuality might feel a little let down. It's also surprisingly quiet, lasting only just past a couple of hours on my skin, yet with a lovely sillage bubble at arm's length hanging around for a little longer. Still, somehow: this just makes me smile. Nothing further from a scary leather-daddy Dom could be imagined: forget the gruff image, this guy's a sweetheart. Gives a great full-body hug and leaves you better than it found you.

rdhtrevelation

This reminds me so much of Byredo frags. Its very similar to Gypsy Water and Mojave Ghost… starts out with a light cozy citrusy feel and dries down to a woody clean smell.

chromatica

I have such a story with this fragrance! First I grabbed a decant, loved it but didn't feel like getting a FB. Long story short, I ended up buying a bottle anyway.

On myself it mostly smells like a leather jacket that was kept with a satchel of vanilla aromatizer but then a friend mentioned it smelled like latex and I started getting this note too. Oh well, nice combination anyway. On others, however, I mostly get creamy vanilla beans and soft suede. Oh and yeah, it is sexy, not in a NSFW Tom of Finland way though.

This was one of the samples I received in the Almost Complete Collection. I don't normally love leather-dominant fragrances for myself, but it works really well here. Since this is more masculine IMO, I gave it to my husband (along with Hermann and a few others). This PROJECTS. We traveled to Miami at the end of April, and it lasted through Florida humidity, and a few hours later, I was still able to smell it on him the entire flight back home. I love several ELdO fragrances, but longevity ranges from abysmal to moderate, at least for the more feminine (Yes I Do) to unisex (Remarkable People) end of the range, and most of them do not project much (the only exception may be Bijoux Romantique which performs really well). This one has amazing projection AND longevity. As for the fragrance itself, to my nose, this is unique and smells niche. It does not resemble any designer fragrance that I have smelled. The leather here is wearable and mixes well with the woods and other notes. I would love to get my husband a FB of this in the future after he has gone through his current bottles (unlike me, he does not like to have too many fragrances at once). For niche, this is a more affordable brand, and given the performance of this one, you get a lot of bang for your buck!

andy812

If I received this and didn't know what it was, and someone told me it was Tom Ford, I would totally believe them. It's ver complex to me. For some reason in the hot florida weather, i swear I get a coconut note. I guess it's just the leather. one of my favs.

Hawaii Jake

I love this one on me. I'm a fan of ELDO, but I don't like all their fragrances. The first thought after spraying the sample was of suede, and then I got some hints of floral and vetiver and wood. It dried down into something like Play-Doh. It's delightful and playful and fun. It's been on my skin for 2 hours, and I can definitely pick out the leather and wood and floral and vetiver. Really smooth. I will be getting a FB of this one.

7/22/21 edit to add - I got a FB. This is flat. When I spray it on, I smell suede. It dries down to suede and powder and a hint of vanilla. I'm sorry to say I'm disappointed

9/16/21 edit to add - I can't explain it, but there must have been something wrong with my nose. I've worn this numerous times, and the complexity has returned. I'm wearing it today, and after 2 hours, it dried down to a beautiful vanilla with some wood. Really very nice.

12/16/2021 edit to add - i wore this yesterday, and I can still smell something supple on my wrist. This stuff lasts!

tyleam

Creamy powdery leather in the opening that is unique and enjoyable. I liked this take on leather for about an hour; then the leather note starts to disappear and is almost undetectable. The remaining creamy powdery scents give out an old lady make-up vibe that is quite pungent to my nose. For me, it proceeds from enjoyable to a scrubber in an hour.

Kake718

the juice starts out clear, but within six months it becomes a dark amber color....why????
still smell good tho.

Robmeister32

One of the best leather scents out there.

jellisunc

I surprisingly enjoy this. Very masculine and lets you know it is in the room. I almost get an anise/licorice note in this, maybe a mix of the aldehydes and floral notes?

Not sure this is full bottle worthy, but definitely reminds me of a country club full of old retired men with gold watches, strong whisky, and cigars.

RayIna

Doesn't anybody know when the liquid of juice become transparent instead of orange-pink?

Pamster

I don't even know where to begin with this one but I really like it. All the notes would lead me to believe it would be a screeching disaster, and yet it all melds together into a really wonderful fragrance. I can pick up fresh rubber tires, worn leather jacket, more than a hint of lemon and pine, and some baby powder. My favorite ELDO so far.

tommytlee

I smell an initial blast of leather, and hints of window cleaning fluid. It is a light leather, extremely wearable. Becomes a woods after a few hours.

spiceysauce5

I get rubber booze, is my nose broken? Definitely get some woods/Forest vibe, plus the florals (Iris mostly) as well

njwooding

Solid, burly, lumberjack-esque fragrance. Certainly worthy of the name, however I think it would be a bit more 'in character' if it was a bit more powerful in terms of sillage. I could see how this would be a polarizing one just because it's a bit musky.

NDStars

First blast of aromatic leather and woods, musky and warm. Like you're walking through an autumn forest wearing your well-worn and well-loved suede leather bomber jacket. The suede punch is pretty strong in the opening but quickly settles down into the woods and musk after a bit, quite pleasant. Turns almost creamy and even a touch gourmand as it warms up. Decidedly masculine but the drydown can be unisex, and best for cool and cold weather days and nights.

6+ hours later: A faint creamy woodsy note remains.

konchokjenpa

A favorite from first spray. This has everything that Tom of Finland should have-- leather, rubber, powder, and a soft footing of tonka and iris.

To me, this meets the fantasy image of the men that the real Tom of Finland, aka Tuoko Laaksonnen, drew. They aren't real-- men with proportions like that and, um, organs, that commanding, and jaws that chiseled, and hair so perfectly coifed, do not exist. They're a combination of an impossible ideal of masculinity combined with an intense sensitivity-- we all know real lumberjacks and bikers don't pay this kind of attention to their appearance, or wear pants this tight!

So as a fantasy fragrance, this is perfect. The leather and rubber says sex, the powder says refinement, and the florals and coumarins say sensitivity. It's a masterpiece.

Kristen_SWYT

I was introduced to Tom of Finland when I was a teen, my best friend was obsessed with anything depicting bulging body parts - I remember the hyper masculinity & the aggressive sexuality; So I had certain expectations of what this should be, I hoped it would be the dirty leather I've been searching for; especially after skimming over a couple of reviews and seeing words like 'alpha male', animalic, sexy....

I was hoping for something unapologetic - a big, butch, burleyness of masculinity, the smell of hot bodies, rough worn leather & the raunch after a night of orgies with policemen, fisting sailors and some bdsm fun - but this isn't the leather Daddy I was hoping for. This is clean, creamy & completely family friendly. This is one of Tom's men fresh out of the shower, clean shaved & untouched, before he gets up to some woodland adventures in a pair of freshly polished boots & a new leather jacket. Which in fairness - I would have known if I'd bothered to read the ELdO blurb!

Despite this being nothing liked I'd hoped, it is pretty much everything it claims to be & I really do love the opening - It's bright & sparkling, fresh & clean - a just stepped out of the shower feeling without ever feeling soapy, which is paired with a really pretty, soft, warm, suede & vanilla - the pairing is actually very beautiful.
After about an hour, the suede starts to take a backseat and this becomes more about vanilla & tonka, which just hovers slightly above the skin, which is all very pleasant - but not particularly exciting for me, so in that regard I do find this a little disappointing, but I'm a sucker for a good opening, which I'm sure Tom was too

poppyetpear

woo wee, this smells like the rubber tires (tyres) on display in jiffy lube! Don't hate it, nor do I love it. It simply exists.

Dean ja

A bright, clean, fresh leather with some cocoa butter and baby powder. This is nice! The only downside is longevity which is about 4 hours. An intense version would be welcoming.

Kronstadt

Tom of Finland. The name evokes one of two things. A strong lumberjack working in the forests of Finland or...a strong lumberjack ’working’ in the forests of Finland. Both fit, but be cautious with your google search for images using the name. A clean, fresh, green, and leather masculine fragrance that is likely the best daily scent from the insanely good house of Etat Libre d'Orange. Unapologetically and obviously Etat Libre d'Orange. Brilliant

I have a sample vial and the name was so intriguing that I just had to smell it. Yes....for men. Very strong. I only sprayed a small amount. Just enough for that first burst. I'm hoping that my husband will try it. I think I'd like it on him.

Bergamet

To me, a fragrance named after Tom of Finland should have smelled like a cross between Kouros and Le Male. At least it should have bent over toward that corner of the fragrance darkroom. That being said, it is clear that this juice contains the ELDO DNA, and yes it is another very successful yet inconceivably bizarre concoction of well-blended notes that should probably never have mixed but we sure are glad that they did.

On first spray, you are overwhelmed with peppery heat which quickly dries down to an iris dominated, green, ozonic leather. Oh, it is homosexual beyond any doubt, but he isn't a muscled, testosterone pumping, glorious stud in human form. He is a dapper queer who works in a thrift store, who spends an awful lot of time tending to his beard and trying to decide on the perfect combination of clashing prints.

This is not a fragrance for Tom of Finland, but for his delicate Stans.

mnitabach

Trying sample of this now & very enjoyable interesting fragrance. When I first put it on got an immediate hit of powdery rooty iris, which instantly receded to reveal the citrus & aldehyde & saffron top notes. Not sure yet abt the longevity, but projection of the top & heart notes is good. This could be a good investment for the price.

ETA: Dries down to slightly resiny vanilla suede skin scent within an hour & a half.

Katushya

I'd never heard of Tom of Finland before encountering this perfume. Fun stuff.

Fresh, bright lemon, muskiness, leather, and bit of sweetness. Longlasting and with good projection. All good things to find in a man, no?

I'd love to smell this on my husband, but as a woman, I would enjoy wearing it. A hit all around.

cranky137

Not 100% me, but so juicy with a sweet brandy type of smell with leather. Somewhere in the underground bar. Leans masculine (and is marketed as for men), but could definitely be born by a woman.

xvxmatthewxvx

yup this smells like a freshly painted black leather harness lol

inky, creamy leather... big doses of suederol in this one

not really even noticing the supporting notes, just a big ole burly synthetic leather accord

about an hour in - it tames down a little, softly sweet powder, at times mentholated, it's an oddball of a scent but I kind of like it …

think I may need to wear it at least one more time to get a better idea of how I feel about it

Alexinaboxx

This is a beautiful clean, creamy leather. Leather is one of my favorite 'genres' of fragrance and this is one of my favorites. I get the lemon and aldehydes for a very breif moment on initial spray. However the leather and creaminess from the vanilla and tonka quickly show themselves and it's beautiful. It's a very light and sweet, wearable leather. I'm a true fan of the house of ELDO. This is categorized as masculine leaning, however this is beautiful on a woman's skin. I can say most fragrance houses have their own DNA in all of their fragrances and ELDO definitely does. I've enjoyed almost every fragrance from this house. Tom of Finland being one of my favorites.

kiraagold

Big alpha leather with a lemon creme center.

This guy shows up at the party in work boots, carrying a box of chocolates. He appreciates your top shelf liquor cabinet, but doesn't stay long.

I like him.

watchaka

I wish I had better news, but hopefully it is still good news for your skin. I thought I had found the leather frag I've been searching for upon first application on skin and the scent I got on paper, but sadly my skin messes up this scent after 2 minutes. I'm sad! It's hard to find the leather that I want. The initial scent I perceived is exactly what I'm looking for: it is straight up no-frills-no-gender leather that can stand on its own with no reminders of too many flowers or fruits- well-rounded, yet quirky, with that ELDO DNA. However, it didn't work on me because maybe the geranium causes that minty-peppery feeling spread on my skin and it ruins my experience. I am still going to use up my sample until the last drop, but I can't buy a bottle. The search continues.

Rugged smoothness, naughty sophistication. This is a linear but gorgeous and really fun leather-floral-aromatic fragrance that totally fits with the Tom of Finland aesthetic. Blast of new suede boots at the top supported by smooth vanilla and pungent tonka. Then the clean iris powder, sharp pine, and fizzy aldehydes cut through with astonishing clarity. It's a combination that works surprisingly well, but the suede really holds everything together. I don't get much lemon or birch, but maybe they're just so well blended with everything else that I'm not detecting them. Oh well, all the reason to wear this beauty more often! Superb staying power and projection, and works well in cool weather or warm. I should also note that this is a fragrance that complements most natural body smells, which you really can't say for a lot of designer scents that seem like they're trying to hide skin chemistry and can come off as a bit discordant as a result. Tom of Finland is classy enough to wear to a dinner party, but versatile enough to wear to a club. Very unisex, very sexy. One of my favorite from ELdO!

halogencat

This is the ELDO I'm most tempted to actually buy in full-size - I've not yet tried any other scents by them that both smell pleasant enough for regular wear and have real staying power. I love the contrast between the sharp, clean conifers and aldehydes with the animalic base, and the sweet, tempering effect of the vanilla and tonka. It wholly embodies what it's supposed to be, rugged, outdoorsy and masculine but with something a little "queer" in multiple senses of the word to it. It's definitely a very masculine scent but I really enjoy wearing it as a woman, it gives a sense of androgynous glam rather than just smelling like I've borrowed a man's scent. Although I first got a sample in the winter and the notes read to me like "cold-weather", I've found it wears really well on stagnant, overwhelmingly hot summer days in the city, like a breath of fresh air.

It may just be the distinct "leather and condoms" accord but I feel like this is a spiritual cousin (or maybe a long-lost lover) of Tom Ford's Tuscan Leather - Tom of Finland is a man of the woods, naturally strong from working outdoors, dressed in flannel and drinking whisky neat, whereas Ombre Leather is a suited city-boy with memberships at a boutique gym and a private member's club, but they've certainly crossed paths in the past and think of one another now and then.

gtabasso

citrus in the top with a little smoke, a little pine and lots of leather; all leather in the middle; little sweetness of tonka and powder of iris in the base; through the top and the middle it reminds me of a leather fougere without the lavender. In the final final base about 10 hours later, it's all about the musk.

getcarter

Howdy Fragranticanos
I have half-full older bottle of this and it doesn't get a wearing all that often, maybe twice a year. I have also owned both L'Essence de Cerruti and Davidoff Adventure - which were also signed by Antoine Lie - and it appears to me that while they are not the same, the similarities outweigh the differences. They are on a spectrum from intense to moderate: ToF then L'Essence then Adventure. Truth be told I have had a number of compliments with the Cerruti and none for the others. So be it. For me the strongest notes in ToF are aldehyde followed by birch. For me it IS a bit challenging to wear - and sometimes I find the aldehydic side a bit too perfumey and headachy. Maybe it is because I live in the tropics and such heady fragrances can tend to overpower. As for branding, I am not sure the scent reflects my understanding of ToF. Perhaps something sharper or darker or more leathery or more ambery or spicier (say cumin or caraway) would play up to the homo-erotic imagery a bit better. But what would I know.
I respect it rather than like it. In any event, perfumery is an ART form so my collection - such as it is - is richer for its inclusion.

I'm a fan of Antoine Lie, that said, I'm not sure what to think of that one.

After a short-lived fresh opening, what I get is a very nice linear trio of birch/vanilla/tonka (the suede note that ELdO's marketing dept want us to see as the latex/condom accord), supported by a subtle but noticeable iris and some green notes.
It's, good, warm, comforting, but not stunning. As other have stated before, maybe even a little disappointing given the name of this fragrance and the high expectations set by other very creative fragrances of this house. Also, the performance is under average: projection is, at best, just moderate and it barely reaches the 4-5 hours of life on my skin. Still, it's well blended.

As for the comparison with L'Essence de Cerruti, I can only spot some -remote- vibes of ToF in the late drydown. At the opposite, I can see a clear similarity between ToF and Bvlgari Black's post-rubber vanillic drydown.

Overall a solid fragrance, that I recommend, but only if you like intimate scents and if you can find at discounted prices (I paid ~$50 for a 1.6oz bottle, that's what it's worth).

Totally unisex, best for fresh to cold days, 20-50yo.

Edit: I now really like it: green/woody/aldehydic opening with an iris-y/vanillic soft suede accord. Only confirmed downside: its poor performance. A beautiful intimastic scent, to wear for oneself :)

wesleyhclark

Lemony-solventy with a hint of skank. Long lasting... days later it's still on my paper strip.

No.

dogmeat

I was disappointed with this at first...I thought a fragrance inspired by Tom of Finland would be much more provocative. I was expecting a heady mixture of Rien, Kouros, and Secretions Magnifiques.

Instead, Tom of Finland is pleasant, thoughtful, and well-behaved. The aldehydes last a long time on my skin. Once this fades, I get vanilla, suede, and musk. This gives me a sweet, 'clean skin' scent. Not so scandalous, but the more I smell this, the more I crave it. I reach for this more and more.

While this may not be as risque as I thought it would be, Tom of Finland is quietly confident and good in any situation. Nice stuff.

My5Scents

Woody, spicy, very sexy, warm, fresh and clean - it does evoke the over the top hyper masculine imagery of Tom of Finland, I can really smell the connection. Like the eponymous artworks, it is erotically charged with male sexuality, but even so this could be devastatingly arousing on the right woman so please try it if that could be you! You can get a sample for €3 from the ELDO website.

Some people have a special fragrance that they reserve purely for sexual encounters, this one is most certainly a highly recommended contender.

Dorange Sense

Amazing concept

scentitar

What a odd and somehow pleasant combination.

I get a quality plastic smell, a tidal wave of ambroxan(artificial ambergris) and single clean almost aquatic note.

Overall this becomes a surprisingly likable and even sexy and musky second skin kind of scent.

In this kind of genre I have and will love my friode by serge lutens that has more of a whimsical and uplifting feel.

I just don't love ambroxan heavy fragrances for some reason personally. It has poor projection, but pretty good sillage and lasts 6 hours or so on me. It lasts ages on clothes though.

For those who like sauvage and wanted something less loud and more mature this might be what you have always dreamed of.

Well done overall, but not my personal taste

carlosrafael

I can smell the condom accord, but it is not one that jumps immediately.

Reminds me of midnight in paris. Leather/powdery combo. Its good.

Vegas Pauli

Starts off as a nice muted spicy and soapy floral concoction: Think the original JPG or Versace Versus Uomo. Then it turned all metallic smelling, like how a fist full of pennies would smell if they were balled up in your sweaty hand. I'm just getting into this house and I'm not sold on this particular offering, but this style of fragrance isn't my taste. Kind of unusual but very wearable, its not bad. Maybe its just not weird or niche enough to catch my attention. I'm on the fence with this is one.

rbalkris

Delicious leathery amber with subtle floral and citrusy hints, this is a very unique and interesting composition from Antoine Lie. On my skin, the perfume starts with a slightly citrusy aldehyde burst quickly transitioning into a floral piney middle (birch, pine, pepper, cypress, galbanum, saffron, geranium) and finally settles into a powdery herbal amber base (vanilla, tonka bean, iris, vetiver, styrax, leather, musk, amber). A nice evocation of Tom of Finland men, ultra masculine muscled gay sailor types with soft hearts, this is a superb avant garde offering from Etat Libre D'Orange. Unisex (slightly masculine leaning), with tremendous sillage and projection, this is strictly for those who are ready for some offbeat kinks in the perdumes they wear. Enjoy!

sf2explus

Carpet shop, hospital, spilled 80's perfume and very very feint lemon is what i get with this.
This is what i would call true art in perfumery.
If JPG Le male had a fragrance dad this would be the scent.

last 8-10 hours
projects heavy for the first 3 hours than stays around an arms length.

Begins with a punch of lemon, lavender, condom, with hints of leather. I smell booze though there shouldn't be any around... The middle rounds off into a very strong leather scent combined with a little latex, which appears alongside violet/lavender. It finishes into a "simple" leather note that has a rubber-like quality. The floral/leather combo is delightful and I can see the appeal of the perfume for someone who really wants to smell like leather jacket, pockets bursting with flowers. Though a positive experience over all, I have yet to be totally wow-ed by Etat Libre.

nardius

I carried out the experiment to find out if Tom of Finland does in fact smell like a condom...
The predominant note in Durex is lemon with some balminess. Tom of Finland has that condom balminess. The condom doesn’t project and the scent is so faint I’m shocked someone made the connection. Durex smells fresher but Tom is more pleasant. Waste of a condom but it's not like I was going to use it any time soon. If a potential partner saw me sniffing a condom and my hand back and forth, it would have ended there anyway.

Tom of Finland is another quality fragrance from ELdO that seems too elaborate. Too much skills, not enough heart. It leaves me emotionless. And emotion is an aspect that i rate very very high on the fragrance scale, and art in general.
Beautiful aldehydic start with a spicy-woody saffron. Excellent though i prefer L'Artisan take on saffron in ST. The one in ToF is great too, but smells a bit sterile. Maybe i am entering a dangerous topic here but this is most probably deliberate if you think what the title of this fragrance is and what it refers to. If i am right than i admire this minuteness.
But the title and image in my opinion would also require the leather effect volume to be a lot more pumped up than it is in ToF. It could have been wild and animalic, dangerous and brutal even, instead it seems ...safe. Which again could actually be a great message. Enjoy life, but stay safe.
A great fragrance that asks me to read through the lines. Maybe it's just my interpretation. And i don't even want to start talking about the clean steamy bath allusion in the final stages.
I don't love Tom of Finland, but i am happy i own it as an excellent example of perfume being far more than just a smell.

Intoner

The first perfume on my sample journey that, IMO, smells clean and dirty at the same time.

I got leather which makes this perfume dirty. All the arts by Tom of Finland instantly appear in my head. A little bit frightening as well as tempting (because of that oversize... oh I know you get it!). while strong iris, vanilla and aldehydes create fresh and clean scent.
and as you can see from the charts above, longevity and sillage are very satisfying.

This perfume force me to think of a hot guy just got out of a bath and for unknown reason he is already sweating. Then, he lean in to hug me.
YEAH.. I will stop here.

I had never encounter a perfume that is unique and manly erotic like this.
I'm sure this one will draw attention from any sex to the wearer.
You will be more than attractive if you are muscular, have dark hair and got pretty face. oh wait, that is the guy in this perfume ad.

Yes, some might say they don't like the scent, but believe me, this will be their guilty pleasure.

Wow. Since i've always loved everything made in Tom of Finland-style (wops! Haha) i was superexited for this. And actually a bit worried that it would be to masculine. But it was Very inviting.
Pretty "unisexual" scent for such a leathery thug-cat like Tom but i dont mind, quite the opposite!
The suede is superstrong in the first 10 minutes. After 1 hour mostly tonka bean & vetiver.
Not the best or the worst, but i have smelled this before.
I thouhgt this would be a masculine version of mix between Kelly Caleche & Vivianne's Budoir, and i was righ ;)t haha.

This cologne surprised me.It is leathery ,powdery and woody product. It's scent is rich, depth and very nice.
Bravo Antoine Lie.

"Tom of Finland is beyond sexuality – he is sex, in all its fullness and magnitude, open and erect."

Oh, puleese.

Not a bad scent. I seem to almost automatically like scents that contain iris. And I'm no fan of the "clean/fresh" genre, but this one is tolerable.

Too soft and clean to be much of a leather scent to me.

Cherry_Darling

Not sure about the bravado sex sells marketing, but, it's a nice complex fragrance. Soapy, woody, slightly spicy, slightly leathery, slightly citrusy, slightly airy. It has a small element of so many scent categories it's a mesh of styles. I don't think it's particularly masculine, a woman can easily pull it off. Put it in a pretty bottle and you wouldn't know the difference, I think because the musky notes are very subtle. Lasts well and turns more leathery with time.

I have 100+ niche samples for swap within Europe - get in touch! Updated spreadsheet of samples on my profile.

Wow...when I first reviewed this fragrance in 2012, it was orange in color, more ambery, stronger, spicier, and longer lasting. What the heck happened?! Once EDP strength, it's become something between EDC and EDT. It's like, okay, once upon a time, there was a daring artist who depicted hyper-masculine men in coy, compromising poses but then today, they've become stick figures.

This fragrance had some soul at one time, guts, and was daring! Now it's become Etat Libre de Prada. It's as though the original was a little too much, so it had to be censored. Here's the thing: it probably wasn't the most outrageous thing in 2012, yet it wasn't reduced to this powdery travesty of its former self. Well, maybe that just shows, there's something to vintage perfume as well as art.

Beyonder

A beautiful discovery! Unfortunately the sillage and the longevity are not good enough on my skin.

ConsumerThis

Ive sampled enough fragrances over the years to automatically have a sense of what this would smell like so I am going to pass. I like my leathers to smell like a wallet or belt with some sweet undertones and incense...not like this..@houstcs LOL!

houstcs

Nope, smells like an overworked stripper dancing on blacktop in a 100 degree blackout. Smell you later tom!

Salvas

Put your nose on a black leather jacket, there you have it, Tom of Finland. A sensual power of body odors mixed with a rich plasticky leather smell. Top quality ingredients involved. It drydown into a smooth vanilla base. Beautiful juice.

ParfumAmour

Wow, this opens with hot tar, freshly poured on a road. Suede comes behind, sexily, he promises a wild time to come. Then a sweetness mixed with bitterness is there, erotic with a cruel edge.
I totally 'get' this fragrance, and the name. If I was a man, I would wear it. It is strong, erotic, utterly masculine, I want to keep smelling it...

a-holy-terror

This was a huge disappointment. The scent was ok, I guess, but it definitely didn't smell like a perfume named after Tom of Finland should smell. I was excepting a deep, earthy and extremely masculine leather scent. Tom of Finland should smell like men's butt cracks, worn leather, tobacco, earthy coniferous forests, tar and dirt, but this scent was boring and not dirty enough.

irisrukka

I bought a tester for my ex boyfriend years ago. I remember I was disappointed. Didn't smell gay to me, it was just plain boring. I don't think Tom of Finland should smell like citrus, it should smell like dark rooms, woods & strong leather. Definitely not vanilla, yuck!!!

Tom Petitgrain

This one may say "novelty" all over it, however, the fragrance itself is a quite successful leather and vetiver number. Wearable and sensual and fun. A rich fragrance with a lot of body.

aussiecrew

This is what every gay man should smell like. It's everything you can imagine. Just think David Bowie 70's, Lou Reed, Freddie Mercury and all the fine young canibals dressed and ready to rock and roll baby. This is a macho man's scent that's ready for action and adventure on the high seas. When I wear this I feel like a real man ready to dominate my darling wife down and dirty. Take it like a man!!!

pravda48

This is one of those scents where the note pyramid cannot give you a good idea of what's going on here - you just have to try it!

I get a sort of soft suede sweetness at front and center. The texture of its smell is odd though, somewhere between rubbery and fuzzy. It's hard to describe, but it's fun and quirky. Some have mentioned condoms, but this is just a touch of the raw balsam of latex, if at all. It has a bit the kind of gooey smell of balsam that I think I recognize from Vamp a NY and Slumberhouse's Ore, but with fuzzy vanilla edges rather than sticky ones.

Also after wearing it and doing 'the shirt test' (smelling my shirt the day after gives me a clearer first whiff impression of scents after being surrounded by them for an entire day) I get one major impression: Playdoh! And now that I've thought it I can't shake it when I smell it, lol!

Asked my bf what he thought and described it as 'milky.' Don't know about that but alright. Not for me as I don't like the playdoh-ish thing I'm picking up, but it's definitely different.

Casamir

I had just received samples of a few ELdO scents. I liked Antiheros and loved Fat Electrician. However, Tom of Finland was one I almost have to scrub off.
On me the scent is fairly linear - I get the suede, vanilla and tonka. However to me, they combine to an overwhelming scent of Play-Doh. I've even let it sit for a couple hours - still Play-Doh.

Syzygy73

At least the best thing associated with Finland along with pony-trekking or camping or just watching T.V. Finland Finland Finland, Tom of Finland is for me.

Valdas Miskinis

Love this one. Very strong but smooth. What I like about this perfume most - the smell doesn't change all day long. And it smells itself like a new leather jacket and a trace of some expensive classical perfume. That one is my favorite now. Beautiful!

sillage 10/10

atlaseetschristmas

Rubbery, creamy, piney, sex-scent. I love this and when I'm in the mood for it nothing else satisfies the craving. Opens up with a strange but pleasant latex accord. Maybe the theming of the scent is influencing my perception but it makes me think of a freshly opened latex condom filled with liquid aldehydes, pine wood cleaner,a squeeze of lemon juice, and some high quality, creamy, vanilla. Often when looking at my bottles I cant help but smell the sprayer! The dry down is balmy and complex, the latex accord smoothens out and becomes a rubbery, leathery suede perfectly accentuated by sweet tonka, and something bitter that I just cannot put my finger on. Definitely a winter scent (wore this in 90 degree weather. One of the biggest mistakes of my fragrance career...). The longevity here falls into the "commitment" category. as in I only spray this on if I'm committed to smelling it for the next 24+ hours. Sillage could fill an aircraft hangar. One of my favorites from this house and highly recommended.

morkant

A wonderful, proudly synthetic modern mens EDP, stony, grey and rubbery with just enough pepper and plush, saffron suede to keep it from being too industrial. Really original in my opinion.
I can understand how some might read the lemon and pine, "bracing and outdoorsy" allusion in this scent as "fake outdoorsy", a la air fresheners and cleaning products, but to dismiss any fragrance with a citrus and pine accord just because of that would be a shame.
Durable, innocent, wholesome and smooth, Tom of Finland is an example of a difficult, abstract concept executed perfectly by E.L.D.O.

When I smell this I think of perfume. Duh, I know it's a perfume and it's hard to explain the feeling, but it's so generic, synthetic, safe and unisex that the only image projecting into my head is of a mannequin splashed with powder. Note breakdown...what? It's just a perfume! :))

Oriental ventage woody leather fragrance.

It starts out rather synthetic rubbery/leather but after some time it turns sweet, vanilla and coconut. Musk in the back. My girlfriend called it "fancy sun tan lotion" smell. Unisex in my opinion.

Sensual, sexual, sensory. Leather like human skin, like the smell of a mechanic after a shower. Original and enjoyable.

The gay community has a new scent: Tom of Finland.

Smells like a freshly disposed jock-strap from a "god of a man" like Tyson Beckford who just came out of the shower, applied half of a bottle of body lotion all over his beautiful body and wore this jock-strap until he had his next shooting at the Delano, Miami Beach, for a bathing suit range.

He disposed of his jock strap that he wore for only 2 hours caught in traffic on the I-95 (he lives in Boca Raton). So sniff that jock strap that barely clung onto his crotch for 2 hours of swearing in dense traffic on the I-95 and you'll get that.

Any questions?

10/10 for sex appeal.

this one starts with a splash lemon and citrus, and a tiny little bit of metallic smell, and this note is quite a drawback actually cause it seems too artificial. then it develops to a soft vanilla with a bit of leather, i thought it's going to be that much of shout out loud or dirty as the picture & how is the art of Tom, but it turns to be soft and calmly with the essence of an expensive soft light gray, Paige, light shades of red, and light brown fabrics with the background of calmly delicate Indian brown coconut. the type of a middle aged coconut (not the youngly fresh out loud coconut that you can sense in Gucci Rush white).

i guess this is the 3rd perfume that i liked for ELdO right after je suis un homme, & dangerous complicity. but this one is kind of common to me & at the same time a hard to find, i might get a bottle soon.

you won't like it from the first time as i was about to leave the sample for good as not wanted, but after 4 or maybe even 5th try i liked it and i kinda get attached to it. so give it more time before you make your opinion.

update (7th Sept 2014) !!!... the smell is way different than my sample! now i can feel the connection between Tom Of Finland comics and this perfume, i feel that tender happy-naughty clean leather, something simi-dark and very sexy within this bottle. now i can really relate this perfume to the art of Tom Of Finland, they fit perfectly.

Man... This is one damn sexy juice!!!

notice: there is no nudity in this perfume at least the one i got, all you can see inside is a face of a guy looking at you and next to him a leather boot, and you have to rip the box to see it clear cause it's on the walls of the box and not in a separate pic.

*Use this if you want to lure someone to your bed :p

A bit of pine and lemon in the opening but quickly settles into suede suede suede, with some nice aromatic greens like birch and cypress. Very woodsman, I really like it though, there's something comforting and familiar about it,and it has an almost nutty feeling. But my goodness would I love to smell this on a man! I would probably melt into a puddle lol(though the press piece is hilariously ridiculous).
That being said, I think it is unisex, especially for other lovers of suede and also for women who like their leathers. I can see how some people could get a slight synthetic feeling from it, but I think that that is just the suede note - it kind of smells like a leather jacket in the opening stages, which of course, isn't really a natural smell. Depends on your taste I guess. Geranium smooths things out more in the middle and I notice a hint of sweetening styrax as it dries down and gets a touch softer and sweeter. Versatile regarding weather and occasions I think, but definitely not a 'pretty' or 'feminine' scent. It's warm and put-together but relaxed. Big thumbs up.

I've once sampled Fat Electrician.
Today I received ToF, it smells the same to me.
Sweet opoponax.

I don't know about this one. As usual ELDO annoys me - Tom of Finland starts with piney terpenes that immediately become very flat and rubbery, like the inside of a Halloween mask. Seems there's quite a bit of tonka in there, but why they would ug it up with all those superfluous synthetics is beyond me.

Stevie.D.

Definitely the best suede I've tried. Far more noticeable than SL Daim Blonde which left me scratching my head in an apricot haze. I wish the suede and light latex opening hung around longer but it quickly turns into a load of vanilla and inevitably disappoints for me. I do not detect any of the other notes.

fuggerone

Classy and floral leather opening, classy and intriguing...one of the most sophisticated and delicate of the leathers!

"Tom of Finland" is one unique odd-ball of a fragrance, which doesn't quite reflect the concept (and in this instance that's perfectly OK with me!)

It's not animalic, or carnal, but rather sanatized, virginal and slightly synthetic. There's no denying it has character though, and I can't help liking it.

The opening is bursting with piney lemon freshness, but the drydown doesn't quite stomp through in sweaty chaps and chains. Rather it smells more like stage smoke and sweet hints of Gaultier's 'Le Male' inhaled off a squeaky plastic leather jacket.

So forget the hairy bears in fishnet vests. "Tom of Finland" is very much a fresh-faced, bubble gum-chewing twink who probably just came out to his parents. Cute and totally doable -I mean- wearable.

laantjebanaantje

Tom of Finland opens quite intense and fresh and bright but quickly turns to a safraleine-suede combo. I think it smells very "new", because I associate it with the scent of shoe stores and new shoes.
The suede is thick and heavy, you can almost taste it. There's a sweet note, formed by the vanilla and tonka bean I believe, that both clashes and harmonizes with the suede. This stage is rather difficult for me, while it's never revolting, it does become rather nauseating, unfortunately.
But then, when the sweet note goes away, the suede becomes more leathery, more butch, and I like it better. It becomes a wonderful comforting, warm scent, as if I'm surrounded by plush, soft leather. Gorgeous!
I think I might let my boyfriend test it, see what he thinks and see whether there's a nauseating stage on him as well.

I just realized that ELd'O Tom of Finland smells just like Escada Magnetism for men with a lot of leather and incense added to it. I used to love Escada Magnetism for men when I was younger, but I would not wear it again today because it has a very linear and simple smell which is way too sweet. To me they smell too much alike and that's a disappointment.

Lom

When I imagined how Tom of Finland would smell it was very close to the way Rien by ELd'O smells like. Full of leather, incense, blended with sweetness.
But ToF is a surprise. To me it smells like a one night stand, after coming out of a gay nightclub. A combination of the smells of condoms, leather jackets, cheap perfumes, an energy drink and a chewing gum. It's not manly or full of testosterone, it's more like the smell of people who desire the Tom of Finland men, not the actual gay macho man.
It's a bit sad that the smell of a condom is representing sex, since condoms have such a repulsive smell that really turns me off. I should however try this perfume on a night out to a club, after dancing and sweating to find out how good it is.
This perfume is perhaps not about the act of sex, but rather the protection we wear and the games we play to get it, and the facades that cover the real bodies and passion.
P.S: In fact, the only people who can really pull this perfume and still be sexy need to look like they came out of a ToF drawing. A combination of their masculinity and this smell might be very intriguing.

It's the first ELDO bottle i bought and i should say Tom of Finland is not weird or challenging that much. Yes the branding is a bit exraordinary but the scent is not. Really.

For me it starts with masculine, bright citrus notes and then fresh peppery pine. But you get rubber-like leather even in this part.

Then it's getting more leathery showing you the real character. At first it's a bit more plastic and rubber-like leather but turns into more calm one. You can pick vanilla-like sweetness and suede here. And a warm feeling with soft spices, maybe saffron. You may also get iris but it's still masculine. I would never say vetiver if i haven't read the ingredients, but yes it make sense! This part is great, mature and sexy but not really hardcore.

Then it quickly goes into base notes. Soft sweet notes (musk, vanilla, tonka together) and suede-like feeling till the end. This part is the most feminen part of the fragrance.

I didn't get condom-like plastic smell and fetish feelings from Tom of Finland. And no one around told me "What a strange perfume is that". It was too normal for my expectations after reading the comments. But it's great anyway.

Longevity is mid-high. Sillage is moderate first, then stays close.

Really good one.

Smelly beast

This is to me everything I would expect from a fragrance called Tom of Finland. Sexy aldehydes creating a clean skin feeling, a rubber note to mimic the smell of vinyl clothes and sex toys, sweaty skin post coitus.

But at the same time it doesn't fell raunchy, dirty and cheap like you would expect a dark room to smell. It exudes a romantic sexuality, like if you are just playing SM games with your lover and maybe a friend or two. LOL

To me this is one of the best outings from Etat Libre D'Orange and a great modern leather.

Highly original fragrance here. At once fresh and likeable, and original and complex.

It opens with a very fresh aldehydic and citrus blend drying down to a slightly sweet latex rubber scent I have never come across before.

To be honest I was expecting something a little more daring and adventurous, but a highly original and fresh niche fragrance, and an interesting experiment in perfume.

NorthernLadMSP

Severly disappointed. I bought this blind because of the reviews here claiming it is like Dolce & Gabanna By cologne.

Well, I have a half full bottle of By and just received the ToF today. The ONLY way they smell alike is within the first minute of spraying ToF. During this short time frame, they smell alike.

However, the great scent you smell when you first spray ToF goes away quickly (incensy orange vanilla) and you are left with this disgusting rubber-leather smell. It actually made me nauseous, and I'm so disappointed that after the first few minutes it really doesn't smell anything like By. It smells more like a condom in a leather jacket's pocket.

Roge

Tom of Finland smells more like Jethro of Nebraska. I see that pine-sol has finally entered the arena of the fragrance world. In all seriousness, I blind bought this because of the reviews. This was disappointing to say the least. I want to wear this but can't figure out when to wear especially because I have other bottles that are clearly better.

blauriche

As someone who doesn't really care for the scent of leather, I will say that this is one of the pleasanter leather scents I've encountered. I don't like it enough to wear it myself, but I like the way the leather is tempered by the pretty notes. It strikes me as more rounded out than other leather fragrances I've smelled. The weird thing about it is after a while the leather scent seems to dissipate and what's left reminds me of breakfast cereal.

samuel.martin.1276

Good smell overall, I feel this is for a more mature man 40+. This could be a solid work cent for winter if you wear a suit. No exactly something you would rock to go work on cars.

Can a fragrance have a sense of humor? I think it's kind of an inside joke. First, the balls to make a fragrance out of something that is so taboo, so iconic in gay, leather subculture, and to put it all out there for the public to whiff, experience, judge, love, or hate. It's deliciously outrageous.

Sure, there's always some kind of marketing stunt as there usually will be, but personally, I think this fragrance has something to offer. If you're familiar with Tom of Finland art, it's hyper-masculine, often exaggerated, but there's still a "pretty" side to it. It's both hard and soft at the same time; together the muscle, leather, and boots are juxtaposed often with a knowing embrace, a mischievous smirk, or a flirtatious wink.

I find that's exactly what the fragrance accomplishes as well. A balance of naughty and nice, but you won't get this from the first try. Maybe the second or third. Perhaps a shocking synthetic burst at first, but commit to it and you'll appreciate the masculine warmth that evolves. And lasts.

miticothor

No, dai, è uno scherzo...It's a joke. Vediamo: ci sono sostanze di sintesi che sembrano naturali e sostanze di sintesi che paiono....di sintesi!! Qui non ci troviamo nel primo caso....

rosarossa

This is a super frag: VERY feminine!

Monster sillage, long, long lasting and affordable price!

I cannot find any transgression......

daniela3

One of the most 'honestly tricky' Maison de Parf. E.L.d'O., that's clear! They love paradox and their anti-pubblicity campaign is in the end another form of propaganda: history teaches us that many successful products have become famous thanks to word-of-mouth advertising........ Avoiding the tremendous descriptions they do of their fragrances (probably 'bad writing' can be part of the game too!) and going ahead to the juice (without any prejudices, if possible) can reveal the real essence of the essence! I do believe also, that when we're looking for a frag we'd choose it blind eyed: persuasion can be a bad prompter!, perfumes shops should change some rules, but I must admit that this is just an utopia....
I love almost the majority of their frags and Tom is one, among them, that I like best. Since the very opening till the soft, tender (yes, of course!) vanilla - and NOT vanilic, dry down I do believe it's an above-the-gender-frag. Unless my skin supports him (I know that perfume is always a 'she', but being Italian for me it's only a 'he'!) shamelessly! I love it and I'm also loved back. Gorgeous ; )

Wonderfully looooooooong lasting!

skipster

The opening of Tom of Finland can admittedly be slightly overwhelming. There really is a lot going on here: boozy notes, rubber, smoke, leather, aldehydes, and more. But after half an hour ToF settles into a delightful vanilla/suede note on a dark background of smoky vetiver with a slight hint of rubber. Very subtle and just enough to keep the scent from becoming too sweet. This phase goes on forever and it just gets even better as the drydown sets in.

Forget all the hype about gay/straight, naughty marketing, condom smell, Village People and all the other stuff that leads the attention away from the scent itself. Tom of Finland is utterly wonderful and it stands a good chance of becoming my new signature scent. For the cold season at least.

A bit expensive, but worth every penny. Strongly recommended!
