Egoiste by Chanel is a Woody Spicy fragrance for men. Egoiste was launched in 1990. The nose behind this fragrance is Jacques Polge. Top notes are Brazilian Rosewood, Coriander, Sicilian Mandarin and Mahogany; middle notes are Cinnamon, Damask Rose and Carnation; base notes are Sandalwood, Tobacco, Vanilla, Leather, Amber and Ambrette (Musk Mallow).

Egoïste is a very conservative masculine fragrance composed of spice, wood and vanilla notes. The top notes, intensive and fresh, include rosewood and coriander. Later on, the fragrance character becomes warmer and mysterious due to Bulgarian rose, carnation and warm cinnamon in its heart. The main theme of the composition (long and intensive woodsy trace) reaches its full expression in the lingering base composed of sandalwood, intensive vanilla and ambrette seeds. The perfume was created in 1990.

I grew up loving EGOISTE.

SpiceBomb original is one of my favorites.

I also have a ton of other fragrances of all varieties.

All of this to say: I have an open mind and will give a fragrance a chance and love when they grow on me.

I just got a bottle of Egoiste yesterday directly from Chanel shipped to me and was so excited. I hadn't had it since the early 90's.

It had a septic vibe to it! That's they only way I can describe it. It had similarity to 1899 but this other subtle and quickly intolerable vibe. I had to wash it off and it is on the way back to Chanel as we speak.

I was shocked. Anyone else have a bad experience. I was sorely saddened as I had this hope that my recent excessive obsession with fragrances might end back where I started. Alas, not yesterday.

Could it simply have been a bad batch?

MoonInAries

I second FirstSense's review below. Last year's batch had morphed Egoiste into a tobacco bomb. The newest testers I've smelled have returned to the more familiar, sandalwood/cinammon/musk combo. Though the tobacco is still more prominent than I remember from years past.

FirstSense

Chanel keeps on changing the batches. The newest is amazing. They toned down the ashy tobacco and amped up the cinnamon, mandarin and vanilla. Just amazing! Performance is a bit less but the silage and smell..........🥰

SUTU

Egoiste doesn't last long, yet over a thousand people here say it does.
I wish that Chanel consider creating an Eau de Parfum version in the future.

If I come across a man wearing this perfume, I have to turn around and scrutinize him; Is he as sexy as he smells?

A woody fragrance, with sandalwood which immediately brings sensuality, spicy, with an attractive and flamboyant cinnamon, all accompanied by a subtle note of tobacco that is ultra well-balanced, light and pleasant. A little peppery then floral note complete the magnificent construction of this perfume. The leather note, with which I am very demanding, does not bother me here; it is well balanced enough to harmonize with the rest without becoming bulky.

Super masculine and... let's dare! ; it gives off a “Big D. Energy”. It is extremely elegant but nevertheless sexy, intoxicating, attractive.

You obviously remember that famous advertisement where women slam their shutters shouting “Egoïste!” ; the man, we never see him, he creates desire... just with his smell... Well there you go, this is Egoïste!

MoonInAries

They don't make 'em like this anymore. A fragrance with this much depth and character could simply not be made in 2024, let alone survive a focus group. There is a dark, bitter tang to the tangerine/tobacco combo which proclaims the wearer didn't come here to be popular, but don't let the name mislead you. I find nothing even remotely selfish, extroverted or egotistical in this fragrance and have a feeling this would have been a much bigger success had it traded under a different name; most men after all don't really want to be seen as selfish.

If anything this is a fragrance which belongs to a quiet introspective gentleman. He still reads newspapers in print and takes long walks in the countryside on weekends. The musks in this definitely correspond to those of a man's body but there's no reason this couldn't be worn by a woman a-la Terre D'Hermes.

The sandalwood heart clearly invites endless comparisons to Chanel's Bois des Iles, and even though that masterpiece was Jacques Polge's inspiration, the two smell very different to my nose, mostly because of the added tobacco in Egoiste. I've never layered Chanel's 80's baroque classic Coco with Bois des Iles but I have a feeling the two combined would be very close to Egoiste.

The ingredient breakdown would suggest a strictly winter fragrance but as an EDT, I find this light enough to pull off even on hot summer days.

Amelio77

wow just wow today im wearing it again in 3 months because its been hot in my country , but today its cold and rainy and i alreadyy got few compliments in 1 hour ... seems like this kind of smell is pleasant to every nose :D its just very well blended and so seductive ... didnt expect to get so mant compliments while wearing this .. i really like old fashion perfumes now

The Athenian Gentleman

Unique and unforgettable male fragrance...

The name is literally suited to the scent that it stays close to wearer make it a selfish thing to not share this gorgeous smell with others: the combination of carnation, cinnamon and tobacco along with a slightly boozy scent and rich leather...Alain Delon in a bottle!

Longevity is about 4 hours with intimate sillage and maybe that's why many people dislike it...things changes if sprayed on clothes as you can smell it as long untill you wash them...

Now about being outdated:Is as outdated as a good whiskey...you may have drunk Ursus-redbull for a while, you may have drunk mojitos, but when the hype goes out you know you will return to your favourite taste...
Simply that kind of smell can't be outdated cause it's a classic...

A gentleman's scent that elevates a well dressed, well groomed, self confident man who know what he wants...

Mystères du Château de Dé

I just found a 25 year old splash bottle I had forgotten I owned. The fragrance is surprisingly intact except for a slight celery note for 10 minutes. I don't smell this quality very often, not even in luxury niche. For example the sandalwood. This is everything lost by Chanel and by perfumery in the 21st century. Oh sure, we have all new kinds of creativity with great fragrances based on all the new molecules. But we can't have this.

shanegrace

My spring evening fragrance. Masculine rose. Many compliments, mainly from women.

Oldchief61

This is a beautiful fragrance. The opening is mixed with Rose, Tobacco, Leather, and Mahogany. I have to admit that theres an Off! insect repellent vibe to my nose for the first 15-20 minutes before the magic starts. Egoiste has a rich, opulent, smokey, leather vibe. The Rose stays through most of the drydown and it finishes with Amber, Leather, Tobacco, and Vanilla. The scent is addictive. This such a departure from the scent profiles of many modern fragrances today. It stands out with it's uniqueness and commands notice and attention.

Longevity is very good (6 hours) and the scent projection isn't out there. Chanel seems to have this recipe for making fragrances that last without loud projection. I get the same thing from Bleu de Chanel and Allure Homme Sport Eau Extreme. That's a characteristic of understated elegance and class. It doesn't call out attention but leaves enough sillage to capture one's notice.

There's a reason Egoiste has been a classic for 34 years. Not everyone will wear this at $130 per 3.4oz bottle directly from Chanel, but many will acknowledge how well crafted and good Egoiste is.

I gatekeep this 10/10 covers all bases

FreddieMercury'sCat

Whoo wee! What a gorgeous fragrance. Right off the top you get spice and rose. It’s a vintage rose, in my opinion. The composition is grounded by the wood and leather, which both come through clearly and beautifully. At no point do they overpower the rose and spice. As I continue to sniff my arm, I get the faintest hint of tobacco, which seems to fade when I breathe in deeply. It’s a fleeting sort of note.

It could be marketed and sold as a unisex fragrance. It’s just the epitome of cool. Despite the fact that it was released over thirty years ago, it feels timeless.

abe.carranza

Hello, has anyone bought recently the current Chanel Egoiste after shave? I am wondering the quality of it in comparison to a vintage after shave. The vintage used to come in 76ml or 125ml bottles while the current version is 3.4ml. Does it last like the old one , is the smell the same? thank you.

Zactel

Extremely underrated these days.

Amelio77

for some reasons i really started to like old perfumes and now that i smelled this .. i really enjoy it , everyone around me told me its really sweet sexy , its really enjoyable smell i get alot of the cinnamon rose and tobaco . damn seductive fragrance for all every occasion exepct summer time this would be too sweet.

alif131

This is beautiful. I have loved it since the 1990s. Absolutely amazing scent for a confident, mature man. It makes you feel powerful and in control, but sensual and sharp at the same time.

hellogoddag

Beautiful rose scent.
Dark and serious floral profile + woody spicy fusion.
Iconic and very admirable.
Adult masterpiece

jellisunc

Opening is a dusty rose, not a fan. Dry down is spectacular after that - reminds me of the woody resins of plum japonais!

scenturian

To me it smells like high quality delicious cookies. Perfectly unisex even feminine leaning.

Pterichor

Egoiste opens up like a snuffed out Yankee vanilla candle. Every note in the beginning is extremely powdery, as if you can perceive each individual granular molecule of scent, similar to opening a spice cabinet and getting a heavy whiff up your nose. Sweet sandalwood smoke and indolic rose march alone next; again, both very powdery. After a couple hours, the particulate cloud shrinks down to reveal some very pleasant cinnamon and vanilla cream, which intimately cling to the skin.

A very dandy sort of masculine.

NecessaryExistence

High quality fragrance. Smells like a soft spicy cinnamon cologne with some woods. Smells slightly dated to me. Projection and longevity is strong. Very nice, just not for me

Asca Naca

I would like to own it but I legitimately don't see when I would be able to wear it. Even though I thoroughly enjoy it, I feel like it is a little bit stinky and not well-received by others. With how much it still costs it would be a waste to not feel comfortable wearing it around others. I think it's much more interesting than Platinum Egoiste which I own. Lasts most of the day and has okay projection. A good classic masculine fragrance!

Sadman fragrance

Smells like rose, cinnamon and wood. Lovely fragrance. Not cloying at all like modern fragrances. Its slightly sweet with the cinnamon. Smells masculine. You will stand out.

@Bboy555

Though they might have many notes in common, I don't think they smell that similar at all. The first version of Egoiste was called Bois Noir, and released in 1987 - just one year after Obsession. So I get your logic, however even though they have that many similar notes on paper, the ingredients used by CK and Chanel are not similar at all.

But who knows, we can't exclude that Obsession for Men might have been an inspiration for Chanel to come up with their own spicy oriental for men. After all, Obsession for Men was the fragrance that broke barriers with regards to what was considered to be a man's fragrance, before that the market was made up of chypres, fougères and some leather fragrances.

Bboy555

Am I the only one seeing the resemblance of Obsession for men? It is like Chanel wanted a more " elegant" version of that cinnamon sexbomb and created egoiste.

PLEASE LET ME KNOW YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS:

:)

Ksj_

This is just an ok fragrance in my opinion and it's later version of "Plantium Egoiste" is much better. However, I still find it to be a quality crafted fragrance and I can see how it was a huge hit during its era.

Side note:

I have a really hard time with rose in fragrances, and unfortunately this has too much.

Himeros00

I love everything about this fragrance- the bottle, scent and vibe. But what I do not appreciate is the lack of sillage. On me it becomes a skin scent. If wearing fragrances for me meant having to sniff my wrist or wherever I applied it to smell it, then I’d love it. But I need a literal aura of scent. One of my friends said I smelled really good and asked me if it was a new fragrance when I applied it standing next to her, but I had literally worn it for months. That speaks for itself.
So for now my Chanel faves are Pour Monsieur and Antaeus.

StuddedLeather

Woody, floral, spicy, and warm. Plus a punch of animalic funk.
I’ll admit I wasn’t the biggest fan of this on the first spray, especially with the opening all I could associate the smell with was standing next to a horse. The dry down is heaven on earth. Couldn’t stop sniffing it.

Next day I try it again, idk what it is but that same funk hits me totally different, in the best way.

Not what I expected from the notes listing, and not a safe blind buy but if you can appreciate it, you will be rewarded.

Edit: This has gradually become my easy reach, dare I say signature scent? I can't get enough of it.

Olivier19

An oriental fragrance crafted by Chanel; yet it is the epitome of European high culture. Warm spiced rose surrounded by tobacco and sandalwood. A striking, daring and yet timeless fragrance worn by an égoïste

istvan.buda.779

One of the best sandalwood fragrance

kuato04

A couple of fragrance reviewers I respect frequently give love to this scent, so I kept in mind to give it a sniff next time I visited a place that had it. I admit I should really be ashamed of myself to the point where I should honestly reconsider having proclaimed myself as a fragrance enthusiast. How is it possible not to have smelled this before? Why hasn't this been in my collection? I must say that the opening seemed quite unpleasant. It simply didn't smell nice and I became worried about having to find a nearby bathroom to try to wash it off. I was lucky to not do anything because suddenly it just started to turn into something magical as time passed. I really love how this smells on me. It kind of smells like Fahrenheit Parfum but wrapped in flowers.

bunnykat

This one never gets old to me. I can only get the horror that is Egoiste Platinum in my country so I always buy this in the EU duty free. In a world of sweet spicy masculine generic clones, this one does something entirely different that I've been told is due to the rosewood.

I'm a woman and have worn this off and on for 20 years. Every time I think I've moved on I randomly wear it again and remember why I love it.

It's not quite beast mode but it's strong and projects. I can smell it on my clothes days later.

Every time I smell TFTV I'm reminded I already have Egoiste. They are not the same smell at all--but for me they fill the same niche and Egoiste gets my vote for richness, complexity and personality.

FragheadMo

The good old Égoïste. One of the best perfumes ever created. A beautiful combination of tobacco, cinnamon, rose and woods. Masculine, rich and old school. A masterpiece.

10/10

Odor Aeternitatis

Rosewood is a very interesting note. It has a woody, spicy, and somewhat rosy odor. Rosewood is used very masterfully in this fragrance as it is mixed well with other woody and spicy notes as well as floral notes (rose and carnation).
It's slightly animalic at the top note, which makes this fragrance very attractive for me. It performs very well and is one of those rare fragrances that remain good both at the top and dry-down. It could be a great signature scent for cooler months. All in all, a very good job.
8/10

Louloudutyfree

female here and I wore this back in 1991 and still love it do this day. I have a vast fragrance collection so I gifted the scent to my husband who loves it.

Fragito87

Do not blind buy this! No disrespect to Chanel and admittedly I was impulsive after reading such wonderful reviews. However, to me it is too feminine.
Full bottle minus 2 sprays up for grabs if into this.

Cinema Paradiso

It's interesting how marketing and clientele it creates, dictates the direction we vote here. Most vote for this as a masculine scent and yet, that it smells like the other chanel line (voted unisex). Come on guys, it won't make your balls drop off if you admit it's a bit too sweet to be strictly male fragrance. Few days ago a women wore something that I thought was egoiste and she smelled so feminine I was afraid to admit I probably own the same scent. It just shows there the line is blurry and an olfactory experience is just a 20% of the whole picture, 5th of all the senses that matter.

Faris.n

If you're +30 years old you most try Egoiste. This fragrance is your entrance to adulthood and maturity.

One of the best classic fragrances I ever smelled. Very classy, woody with a hint of cinnamon and shy rosey vanilla.
10/10

kitkatya

strangely, i don’t get any cinnamon, & it’s a bit too dry and powdery on me unfortunately … from notes alone this seems like it would be perfect. slightly sweet edge from the rose over the sandalwood … it’s exciting! i can’t deny that. curious to smell it on a man

LeSmeller

This is a sweet, rosy scent, kept on the male side by tobacco, and wood, probably. It's completely unrelated to Egoiste Platinum. Longevity is legendary, it keeps going strong after 12 hours.

After all the years of wearing different fragrances, when I think about the one that has been with me most of the years, it is definitely Him-L’ Egoïsté!

He was with me throughout my life in various locations, he was by my side during good and bad situations and events... He was simply a real companion!

The initial version of Bois Noir was made for the CEO of Chanel at the time - in honor of his recognizable signature scent!
Thank God, it was later released for use by the general public under the changed name Chanel-L' Egoïsté....

If nothing else- You probably remember the unforgettable strong black and white commercial on TV- Women fighting and slamming the shutters from the hotel- and in the middle only in one of the rooms- a man's hand reaches out for this perfume and puts it on the fence :D

The perfume was released in a strange period - At that time there was strong competition with different fragrance profiles - but it captured the true essence of beauty and charm - until today!

Over the years, I have had several series or bottles - from wooden stopper bottles with a darker liquid, but without L', and with a wooden stopper with a lighter liquid - with today's and current version with a plastic stopper...

Literally, it hasn't changed much in all these years, and still when it's up to the user, the story slowly unfolds and beautifully develops into a perfectly perfect fragrance!

It smells like cinnamon (not after Christmas for me), rose, rosewood, tangerine, coriander, tobacco...
In this way, that it is so well mixed - that if I were to remove a single thing from this composition - it would no longer be him in any way - that's why there is no good clone of this perfume!

That's why I can call such a perfume a True Friend - I know it very well and even though so many years have passed, I've met plenty of other fragrances during this time - But it's still here and has remained the same - good-hearted with all its charm of which it rests!

Lwjm

TL;DR An unusual scent; powerful and strong, it's primarily woody and very 'dry.' There is a 'funky' element to it, and a sort of spicy accord (not individual spices, not like an oriental) float around. I like it a lot, but I can see why it was a commercial failure in 1990. It's very distinctive, and even polarising.

*****************************
This is an unusual scent, and you can see why it was a commercial failure for Chanel in 1990, although I love it. It doesn't fit its moment in time at all; it wasn't an 80s powerhouse (apologies for using Fragrantica cliches...) and it wasn't an Acqua di Gio, CK Eternity fresh-type scent of the 90s - although they'd catch up on that trend with the Platinum 'version' of this scent (it’s simply a different scent, though – not a flanker of the original in any way).

Reading the reviews below, I was motivated to write because ... well, reviewers say that they can smell very strong, distinctive elements, but these are generally things which would struggle to exist alongside the other things people claim to smell as well. As such, the descriptions aren't really capturing what the scent offers.

People are claiming (on aggregate) to be finding so many, often incompatible, scent profiles - perhaps this "unknowability" or "illegibility" really is the conclusion we should draw.

You could have a woody and tobacco. You could have cinnamon and rose. You could have rose and coriander. You could have orange and cloves. You could have rose and sandalwood... but could all these things be robustly there at the same time? It would just be an olfactory shouting match. Clearly, something is amiss. Because this isn't shouting match.

I think that the 'notes' people are pulling out are not really 'notes,' in the sense that this perfume is more 'one thing' or an 'accord' rather than a list of notes that you move through. It's a sort of woody, funky, dry, very, very masculine accord.

Both on Fragrantica and Basenotes, woods and spices crop up a lot, and they’re right. But the spices are strikingly NOT oriental in nature. They’re a sort of dry funk in the background. They’re nothing like, say, contemporary niche spices (like you’d find in Amouage, or MFK, or Penhaligon’s), or more traditional ones either (like Jaipur, or Declaration, or Lagerfeld Classic). Wood, wood wood - sandal, mahogany, rosewood. There's no oud, thankfully (but then, this is from 1990).

The next notes to register in the votes on Fragrantaca are tobacco and rose... hmmm. If the tobacco is there, it’s there not as tobacco itself, but as a dry, flaky, background ‘leaf dust’ of some sort. Think autumn, not humidor. Or don’t think it at all – I really think that tobacco isn’t a big deal at all – and Basenotes doesn’t list is as a note.

Rose is there, but way, way back - it's some kind of dusty, dried pot pourri rose, absolutely nothing like, say, Lyric Man or Sables Roses. It's really dialled back, dusty and austere.

It lasts all day.

I like it very much. It's unlike anything else around, and something of a perfume orphan, out of time, out of place. If you're the sort of person who reads reviews, I think you'll like it too. But not if you're into sweet scents that smell of snacks.

Whateverwhocares

Mmm rose and sandalwood. Honied tobacco. Alternating nuance comprised of citrus, woody vanilla, amber and leather. This stuff is classic. So good.

bayola

If a "Byronic" hero had a scent, it would be Chanel's Egoiste. This is the scent you wear during the dying days of a tragic romance -- think of Spike from Cowboy Bebop and his relationship with Julia. Like the ending theme of that show, "The Real Folk Blues", this is a scent that evokes feelings of a love forgotten, symbolized by a visual of a bouquet of roses discarded in the heavy rain. My favorite fragrance of all-time and my signature scent. It's one that is very near and dear to me.

don00

reminds me of christmas candles

solobinoy2k

Very similar to Versace Man; however, Egosite is much higher quality and has great longevity. The tobacco drydown is stunning

HOW DID I ENCOUNTER THIS SCENT
A long, long time ago. This was the first scent I bought ever. I loved the commercial and Chanel..... I felt like a million dollars wearing this even though I blind-bought it back then and had no experience. It took some time to get used to. To me back then it felt like Christmas and very luxurious.

WHAT DO I SMELL
For sentimental reasons, I bought a bottle again a year ago. My nose is more educated these days. I was actually surprised to smell a lot of the ingredients that are listed. I would never have imagined that rose would be so central to it. To me, it is a rose-central scent partnered with spices with a base of wood and just the right amount of sweetness. I think it really is a masterpiece of blending. You smell a lot of notes but it is really hard to pick them apart. Very Chanel, which I sometimes find boring, but not in this case.

WHEN TO WEAR
It is perfect for the holiday season but I see much more potential for different situations if you have a more educated noise. If you recognize the mandarin and rose you could also wear it in summer for nights out. It has just enough lightness to it. The original I remember was quite dense. Wear this if you want to look / feel distinguïshed and maybe not on a hot summer day.

DESIGN AND QUALITY
I love the simplistic design of the bottle. The packaging is also very Chanel. The atomizer is the best of my collection, the spray is perfect. The plastic cap is meh. I remember the old one had a wood structure on the same bottle cap, which I already back then found not up to par.

HOW POWERFUL IS IT
It is only an EDT, but is powerful enough. It projects and longevity is similar to many of my Tom Ford private blends. It is not a beast. In cold weather the longevity is good but the projection is ok. In hot weather the longevity is ok, but the projection is very powerful.

MY CONCLUSION
Classic on the initial encounter, but I find it quite modern if you dive into it. To me, it is more tilting towards the masculine side (whatever that means). I was always wondering if there would be a nice rose-based scent for men. After 30 years I discovered there is one and it is a masterpiece.

jijuyu

One of my favorite fragrances of 30 years. Chanel treats the customer like royals. This lovely fragrance for men is bold, warm, strong, projecting. It is telling that Egoiste and other fragrances remain superb and relevant. No need for endless flankers, Elixirs and whatnot. I wouldn't wear it in summer, but one certainly could. Given that I have a hundred fragrances on the shelf, there is always room for a 50 and 100 ml bottle of Egoiste.

If you like my thoughts, hit the Like button. 👍

wanderer123

It's strange. I bought a batch 3201 bottle a couple of years ago. It's starting to cool off so I've been checking out my fall frags. Today, I applied 1 spray and have sat with it all day. Years before, I smelled sandalwood, cinnamon, and a bit of carnation. Today I get nothing but rose, rose, and more rose and a bit of sandalwood in the background. The rose isn't aggressive and in your face. It's extremely mellow but it's full bodied. Not a vibe for hanging with the fellas. It's cuddle intimate. Also, it feels very unisex today. Women who occasionally do men's frags could pull this off no problem.

Oliban

"Egoïste" is a perfume that is both cheerful and sparkling, with a warm and impertinent scent.
I think I tested a lot of perfumes, well before I was 20, during, and in the 1990s. Prosperous, exuberant and boisterous period of my life.
I remember wearing it as soon as it came out, this spicy wood expressed an explosion of notes so radiant.
Like the advertisement of Jean-Paul Goude in which we can see the facade of the Carlton, a sumptuous facade of sunny white stone, where "women will type their rages in the shutters of the palace"!
The juicy Sicilian Mandarin, spiced with coriander and enlivened by rosewood. I came out of the aromatic classics, wiser ...
I remember this delicate heart, with these perceptible notes, of Turkish rose entwined with the note of carnation, these receiving the lively whip of cinnamon. In warmer version, rounder, more present than today. It has slimmed at the heart.
And, a warm background wooded by sandalwood and balmed with myrrh and amber ...
I just bought it more than 30 years later. It has barely changed. Always impetuous at the opening, less round at the heart. I always find it elegant, chic and mature. Lighter!
But, always remain egocentric!
A weaker hold, a beautiful wake.
In my opinion, it has a distinctive fragrance signature.

radiologist

My newly found love and signature fragrance. It's my favourite in my collection. So clean and refined, yet still sexy... I've read many reviews saying it's for older gentlemen. And yeah, maybe if you're the kind of guy that wears sweatpants all the time, it might not be the ideal scent for you. But if you enjoy dressing up and are a sophisticated individual it even works for guys in their 20s.

VintageNose

This timeless fragrance are like olfactory treasure that evoke a sense of nostalgia and sophistication.

The charm of this classic lies not only in its carefully crafted formula but also in its ability to transport you to different eras and evoke a sense of timeless elegance.

I got a travel spray of this because I was really intrigued by the notes and the reviews were amazing…..and I am not disappointed at all.

This is a beautiful rosy spicy smokey fragrance. Perfect for nights out and for dates. This smells unlike anything I’ve ever gotten my nose on.

On a side note though, something comes off as kind of animalic on my skin. Weird because there are no civet or castoreum or any other slightly animalic notes in this one but I swear there is something animalic in this. It’s honestly a tiny bit off-putting but all in all this still very nice.

I do wish this was stronger and projected more and for that reason I won’t be buying a full bottle but I still think this is great. An EDP version would be super tight.

DichterundDenker

In my opinion the best Chanel fragrance! Spicy, lots of cinnamon, fine tobacco and with beautiful roses in the background. Very noble! It is best suited for a romantic evening.

The durability is very good. The silage strong.

stonderr

Definitely unique. The opening made my head hurt intensely but after 10 minutes I could smell the sweeter notes and I really liked it. It lasted about 4-6 hours on my skin.

KJS88

Mildly controversial, but I had, wore well, and seriously preferred the intermediate formulation everyone else hated that was more rosy-tangerine-soapy than newer one which is more mahogany-tobacco to my nose. The latter smells kind of repulsive on me, the cinnamon and guaiac come off with an edge reminding me of stale saliva and the weirdly musky interior of polished mahogany cabinet. I tried to like it, but I ended up throwing it away - I couldn't rehouse it. I had a very similar experience with Platinum Egoïste - that one isn't totally unwearable on me now, but I haven't been able to feel comfortable wearing it and had to throw it, too. Perhaps it's a change in chemistry, though I doubt that as I've been able to do side-by-side comparisons.

It's really not the end of the world - in the course of falling out of love with Egoïste, I've discovered a profound love for much of Allure line, and found respect for and comfort in the Bleu series, which would have been unthinkable for me a few years ago.

JasKiew

Égoïste is a Manly scent that debuted in 1990 named L’ Égoïste and subsequently became Egoiste. By definition, an “Égoïste” is someone who is self-centered, haughty, arrogant, selfish.

Egoiste gives the wearer the Ego, the Confidence, Self assurance for everything. Yes, that's the scent profile that describes it.

When I was in my teens and throughout my younger adult years, this Chanel fragrance has been touted as a Musculine Masterpiece that stands out from the Pour Hommes and Barbershopy scents of the classics. It's a scent that makes you stand out amongst the Males and the Alphas.

Egoïste is a very personal and masculine fragrance. It is spicy, woody with intensive projecting top notes of rosewood and coriander. As the scent develops, it becomes bolder, warmer with the bulgarian rose, carnation and warm cinnamon in its heart. On the drydown, it reaches its full potential with the smooth sandalwood, ambery vanilla with the suede like leather and somewhat smoky tobacco. It's finishing is bold and rugged, with the roses and cinnamon still lingering around giving the wearer everything they need to impress.

The longetivity for Égoïste is good for 8-10 hours with very good projectivity from the opening and great silage. At least it's not any weaker than Anteaus, performance wise. It can be used at a formal event or as a sexy date night scent, manly and versatile. If you are looking for a Bold, Confident and a Scent that speaks, look no further than this Chanel fragrance.

I have fond memories of wearing this in smoke filled bars when I was younger (it mixes very well with actual tobacco on clothes). Great winter scent. Doesn't mix well with sweat in summer. Quite a sophisticated scent with rose mandarin tobacco cinammon etc... it is on the spicy side definitely not fresh. Extremely elegant but don't overspray it. 8.5/10

UnquenchableFire

Man I just had a BIIIIGG 3.4 oz bottle of this delivered. I used to have a 1.7 oz a few years ago, but I was too young then. I was 35 but now i'm 40 and i am so glad i got this back because it is the most beautiful, elegant work of olfactory art i've smelled. If anything could smell as good as egoiste, those are big shoes to fill. It projects strongly and yet softly with warm spice and woods, and a lingering sweetness that is barely discernable in the middle of the darker notes. It is a rich, burgundy mohogany fragrance, full of spices and woods and molasses and everything sweet and savory. I would love to have this as a signature scent, but then again I would hate to ever run out of it. ahhh so nice so nice. i love it. instant 10/10.

by the way it may be a "reformulation"? i dont know but it is still absolutely gorgeous, i mean come on it's Chanel, they know what they're doing. I also have a newer bottle of Antaeus and it's also super premium and beautiful smelling. ok thanks guys take care

dann.martin

This one is absolutely gorgeous.
It is so full of personality.
A scent for the “warm” gentleman, not the “cool” ones.
That rosy dry down is absolutely addictive. I’m used to spraying it on my arms before going to bed just to keep feeling that smell.
It is by far my second favorite from Chanel (after Coromandel, of course.... that heavenly creation; the most wonderful fragrance I’ve ever experienced in my entire life).
I keep it in my winter rotation alongised Givenchy Gentleman EDP (which is the only winter rival to this one I know of) and L’Homme Ideal Extreme.
Thank God this thing projects wonderfully and has tremendous longevity on me.
One of my all time favorites.

G.GirlSwagger

I've had my small deluxe sample of Egoiste since 2004. Knock me over with a feather, I never knew this was a men's fragrance. On my skin this OG formulation sweetens up nicely. It could easily pass for a modern women's scent today. The cinnamon, sandalwood, rose, & mandarin can honestly give a lot of compositions in the current market a run for their money. Chanel should really market this OG formula & rebrand it as a unisex type scent with how popular woody florals have become in teh women's market.

ChillScent

Egoiste - Selfish

It's quite a supreme name for marketing. I could say that Egoiste is in the phase of the change in that day 90s. It's more like a creation in 80s, and then..the taste/trend is a bit shift to Simply/fresh scent. So, It's a flop in its time.

This taste of complex scent will be back in Niche perfumery nowadays. The shame that Egoiste is crazily reformulated. People will never know the utterly sophisticated of the Egoiste 1990, spicy woody to give the warmth and sweetness, tobacco like, floral to light up.

If you could find the OG, do not hesitate to grab it. It will fit you when you are ready for it.

Gorta

A terrific fragrance - classy, complex, timeless. One of my favourites.

ColoradoCouloir

I’m sorry to report that I very much like this timeless classic. While I certainly lament the fact that I’ll never have the opportunity to experience the stouter original, I’m pleased with this current incarnation and that Chanel has kept it available via boutique or its through own online outlet.
A little spicy, very woody and highlighted with an astute dark red rose. If mid century modern design had a fragrance…

Anabol2336

Still my favorite Chanel. This one is just so gorgeous and epitomizes the era of the late 80's powerhouse fragrances mixed with the early 90's sporty fragrances. It has Gene's from both especially from coming out in 1990. Ive always thought Egoiste is like a cross between Fahrenheit and YSL Opium Pour Homme. I of course own all three and adore them. My father had Egoiste when I was a kid and often I'd spray it or Fahrenheit or Drakkar on before school. I grew up in that late 80's early 90's era and to me it created the best fragrances of all time. If you want something classy that still gets plenty of compliments and nobody really is going to smell like then Egoiste is a wonderful option. I recently acquired Tom Ford Tobacco Oud and believe it or not it has that same vibe. Probably from the unique sandalwood and tobacco combo. Lastly the performance is incredible always has been. No reformulation has ever really messed this fragrance up thankfully. Highly recommended.

gandrasta

So ladies and gentlemen, hands down to masterpiece. Perfect men fragrance with mostly sandal runs the whole show. It progress so satisfyingly from spice to woody rose until that addictive warm leather dry down. It's the father of Elysium and the likes. Works perfect for any weather

mohk

I do not know why this isn't making a come back, it appears to be the daddy of all of these dense/dark fragrances popular now adays..maybe it is just too sophisticated?

Anyway, although I had sampled fragrances before, this was my first full bottle purchase, not a bad start eh? bought it around 1997/1998 from the first Paris Gallery store in Abu Dhabi mall - if you know you know, if you don't that's alright :)

Glyph

Few fragrances I have tried smell more different on skin as on paper as Chanel's Egoiste. On a card, the cinnamon note is this is almost overbearing, but on your wrist or neck the note lessens considerably, and the rose and carnation buried within become more pronounced. The result is that on me this is one of the most sophisticated men's scents I have ever tried: the balance on my skin of the floral notes with the spices and (especially) the woods--sandalwood, mahogany, and rosewood--is perfect.

No, this is not a fragrance that will likely appeal to many young men; but if you're older than 35 yourself (or buying for someone that age), who cares? This genuinely has real panache and Old World charm. It is not as easy to find as it once was, but it is absolutely worth checking out if you like complex and elegant men's scents.

Raul Claudiu

Damn this thing lasts a lot, the dry down is quite interesting,spicy-mostly from the coriander, the sandalwood smoothens everything out beautifully. Pretty complex scent, changes a lot from the opening until the dry down

Raul Claudiu

Cigarette smoke, ashtrays and a little leather with a tiny bit of cinnamon is really about all I get. I could see this working on an older gentleman who s a smoker.

Fragaddict123

This one was on my radar for a while
I wasn’t very interested until a certain YouTube reviewer said something about smelling like cigarettes and I was sold by then
I blind bought which is usually is not a good idea
Sprayed it on a cardboard after it settled down
I loved it I can’t believe I could smell an ash tray from this scent but I wasn’t very optimistic since fragrances change depending on surface
On my skin it smelled more rubbery in a sense wasn’t very annoying but I didn’t like it as much
And on clothes the sandalwood and cinnamon shined more than the rest of the notes
I really wished the cigarette notes were more prominent on clothes then it would be a home run to me
Performance is slightly above average projection is a little on the weak side
I must say its unique you should try before buying

ZiggySmellsGood

I’m glad this fragrance is my collection . I’ve had the same bottle I’ve had since I added it collection long ago so rarely do I use this . So I went back to it over the weekend and I could smell it all night . This has great performance . It is classy sophisticated, and way different than any Chanel fragrance. This I feel is to be worn on occasion and during the colder months . It’s warm, spicy, not overly sweet. It has depth especially for a edt . There is a lot going on in this one . It is well blended . I definitely pick up the rosewood, cinnamon and sandalwood . They are well blended with the florals . The vanilla makes this very smooth .I see tobacco in the notes but I don’t pick it up . I would recommend this to some one that collects and doesn’t have this in the collection however I wouldn’t recommend it to the average person trying to smell good !

Maynard_James_Krawczyk

OMG. This is such a great scent. Warm, sophisticated. Definitely not dated.

Mimas_

Unique, likeable, and woody on strip, but the heart-notes turn into a cherry/cinnamon cola on my skin.
Unfortunate, but also somewhat endearing.

CeeTee

As a lady, I’m digging it, but it’s definitely a dude’s fragrance. It starts fresh. I thought I was getting mandarin, cardamom and incense. But, wait for it…nope. I was wrong. The fragrance takes a turn, several, in fact: a real journey in the course of the first hour.

It retains the mandarin throughout; it becomes more delicate and sweeter, as time passes. The initial rosy facet is one of Brazilian rosewood that my nose recalls from Fendi’s Theorema. The tobacco leaves unfurl and give a dry, warm, enveloping feeling, amplified by the sandalwood that only glances in the direction of creamy.

The leather is like a very real, dry, broken-in satchel, that may have been worn by a bachelor to a couple of gatherings around a fireplace, with friends at a casual house party, but the kind with charcuterie boards laid out.

Finally, the rose emerges from the smoldering ashes and the vanilla sweetens the composition just enough to emit the sophistication of a Renaissance man. As guests trail out the door, he’s enraptured with the hot girl next door. They engage in a deep philosophical conversation and they find their way upstairs. He’ll see her again.

He’s a man’s man. He’s rugged, but also, urbane. He’s a nice guy, but he doesn’t finish last.

Gorta

Classy and sophisticated. Definite hint of rose comes through. Love it.

Tings

Really love this fragrance. Masculine, timeless, warm, confident.

This thing smells some intimidating dictator. Name “Egoiste” fits really well. Really good and it boosts your confidence

Pgdipoto

This is really nice. I was afraid it might smell dated, but it doesn't. It smells timeless. Well blended. I keep getting subtle whiffs of sweetness, incense, spice, rose. It's overall just very pleasant and beautiful. It's not that strong on me, which I like. I don't know why people say this is a strong fragrance; it's not. Feels very fresh, sexy, rich, and sweet at the same time, but not too much of any. I really enjoy this. Seems fine for any time of year, day or night. Sophisticated, but in a beautiful, timeless, ageless way.

Chanel's Égoïste is a scent that exudes mystery, confidence, and sex appeal. This is not your average cologne; it's daring, seductive, and alluring. The moment you catch a whiff of this fragrance, you're immediately transported to a world of sophistication and luxury.

The scent is a masterful blend of warm spices, sweet vanilla and cinnamon, and a dominant sandalwood note. But what makes this fragrance truly unique is the subtle addition of tobacco and honey, which provide a seductive and exotic quality that is impossible to ignore.

As you wear Égoïste, you'll notice a hint of rose that balances out the scent, making it more androgynous and versatile. It's a fragrance that can be worn by anyone, regardless of gender or occasion, and it's sure to turn heads wherever you go.

What I love most about Égoïste is its ability to make me feel confident and sexy. It's a fragrance that demands attention and lets people know that you mean business. When I wear this fragrance, I feel like the world is my oyster, and I'm ready to take on anything that comes my way.

In summary, Chanel's Égoïste is a fragrance for the bold, daring, and confident. It's a scent that will make you stand out in a crowd and leave a lasting impression on anyone who crosses your path. So if you're looking for a fragrance that's both warm and impressive, look no further than Égoïste.

MarsOnEarth

This is a masculine fragrance based on contemporary standards but a women can pull this off for sure. With all of the popular “dark and mysterious” niche fragrances that exist, it’s a wonder that this isn’t more popular in the current market. When I realized that I had almost every Chanel mens fragrance (still missing Antaeus and Allure Homme Sport) I decided to indulge myself. To my surprise this is an amazing scent. It has that Chanel style perfumerie but deeper and darker. This might seem like an odd comparison but this smells like Chanel Allure Homme sprayered over a light layer Tom Ford Tobacco Oud.

Just got my 100ml bottle of this classic . Love it ! The first woody frag I ever came across, back in the nineties. I think this is timeless . Very underrated. If you are wondering where to find it , go straight to Chanel website . You will find it there . 👌🏻

Sparkleball22

Scent memory- Sometime in the mid-90s I was at my friend’s house getting ready to go out dancing. He had started working at Macys and was getting into fashion and fragrances. He came out of his room looking dashing and a magical scent hit my nostrils. I had seriously never smelled anything like it and I said, is that perfume? It didn’t fit the “men’s cologne” profile to my baby nose.
He laughed and said it’s Egoiste. And then he sprayed it on me. We were the dancing queens that night!! We smelled like gods….
So 20 something years later I’m on my fragrance journey and just honestly nothing has ever come close to impressing me the way this fragrance did. I think this is a beautiful anyone scent. Something about the spicy sweet woods with just enough florals and the tobacco. Much respect to this fragrance. Maybe I’ve been chasing this dragon ?

Dimdim

Hey guys.. Egoiste is a wonderful creation hidden in time ... I am glad i discovered it ! Signature scent vibes and beautiful silage! And guys : do you get Bigarade Concentree vibes here? Well i do :)

Asthmodeus

Bought a 2021 batch. At the start I loved them, just like others say - they're pure old money essence, mature, dry, manly, sexy scent rather for fall/winter nights. Put on your best suit, coat and wherever you go you'll feel like the main character of the evening (unless there's someone wearing Antaeus).
They were fun while they lasted though. I haven't tried the older batches, but longevity is a total joke. 5 sprays around head/neck, mainly on the clothes and these last 2 hours max. Projection - same story. I just wish the current series would perform as well as they smell.

Vape

Just bought a new bottle, my last one was from 2000 and it is definitely not the beast that it was, boy that juice packed a punch! But even so, still a stunning scent, rich, deep and complex. Not for the faint hearted and definitely possessing of a more mature character. Arguably Chanel's finest offering IMO.

AaronT

Just got this I think it's brilliant, smells more expensive than it actually costs reminds of a few Roja's, a brilliant buy, nice chypre ambery fresh scent, perfect for all seasons.

Good to fill a temporary spot for other chypre to come, good for "itching the chypre itch".

Update: Recognised that for me this is to be sprayed on skin and not on your clothes, when sprayed on your clothes it does nothing is dead and doesn't come alive, when sprayed on your wrist that's when you begin to appreciate this scent.

RJ Watson

I recently scored a pristinely stored bottle from the 90s (the packaging and bottle has changed since then and I would imagine a reformulation or three) and this stuff is glorious. Perhaps it’s a touch louder than I feel comfortable wearing these days but I’ll be discreet when spritzing, to help mitigate its sillage.

Experiencing it today, I can easily see how it’s distantly related to Bois Des Iles, and Coco (Jacques Polge signed both Coco and Egoïste) - Chanel’s use of sandalwood materials makes these perfumes smell like money…old money to be specific.

I will treasure my vintage bottle, as I’m not likely to find another.

Kimiaka

When I was 16, working in retail, a customer came in, smelling incredible.
I followed him around the store as discreetly as possible (creep!). Before He left I had to ask: « what is this scent you are wearing? »
It was Égoïste.
To this day, if I catch a whiff of it, I’m looking for the wearer. I bought a bottle to be able to smell it at will (and I wear it even if it’s marketed as a masculine scent) but nothing beats the effect Égoïste has on me when worn by a man. Whooohooo! Irrésistible.

dmd63

Bought this last weekend. Does bring me back so good memories.

I wore this back in 93´/94´, when i was 16/17. It´s amazing how u can put a perfume and be transported back in time.

The smell is still the same, vanilla, wood and foral. But I think they´ve messed with the formula, it doesn´t project so well as it used to. The egoist line and Anteaus are by far the best Chanel has to offer.

Love it. Pure and utter class. A true gem, so sexy, so cozy. LOVE!!

Matei_D

can chanel not do a banger for once?

Chemason1967

Had a sniff of this today in John Lewis, what an absolute banger can’t believe I’ve never smelt this before. The wife didn’t like it I’m beginning to think she’s got a nose made of the same material as Pinocchio. Also had a smell of the Platinum, not for me but this one I suspect will be my first full bottle purchase of 2023.

Had a smell of the tester strip of this following morning and not claiming to be an expert but this now smells very similar to Fougere Nobile.

TupacAmaruShakur

One word "unique" ....you gotta be a bad mothaf.... to wear this one. Are you ready? I know that I am! Love it

stacia79

I know vanilla and sandalwood are notes and I pick up on those, but I also get the memory of exotic woods, tobacco, honey and old leather, like the bindings on antique books.

This smells drop dead sexy. It smells expensive. This would be a cologne for the Ideal Bachelor. He would be a provacative and confident man, secure in his sexuality and he would smell like this. This is the guy who has a hip apartment and listens to lo-fi jazz. He has some political beliefs that scare you a bit, and he acts older than his age.

There was a famous commercial for this cologne when it appeared in 1990 that showed women screaming out of hotel windows, opening and slamming the windows, shouting "Egoiste! Egoiste! Egoiste!" It was a very weird commercial, but you got the idea. All of these ladies had been wronged by the unseen man. "Egoiste", by the way, loosely translates to "selfish". Some guy had been selfish and led these women into fits of window slamming rage. I guess this is a cologne to be worn by selfish drop dead sexy heartbreakers then?

Vikingtop

Dark Woods with a little fruit and rose. Very strong.

A timeless fragrance… This isn’t a huge compliments getter, but this fragrance’s name says it all: you do not wear it for others, but selfishly for you.

IamdrinkingBeer

Love at first scent. Images of Christmas as a kid flash right before my eyes. Feels like i was so alive during the 90s, even tho i was born at the end of the 90s. This fragrance is magic, i believe its Chanel's best release. A masculine, spicy and more warm version of Bois des Iles. So cozy, so beautiful, it is one of the perfect fall and winter staples, especially Christmas! The fact that this is not in exclusive line is crazy, cause only a few designers come close to the magic of this. Don't worry that this is released in 1990. This stuff is truly timeless.

Let_it_be

Egoiste smells like Christmas potpourri, terribly sweet like raisins. There's a strong Rose note in it that makes it difficult to wear unless you are Count Dracula wearing a suit.

eau de Saif

I somehow got my hands on the old formulation and it is super potent, takes me back to the 90’s in a middle eastern barber shop

teh

Love love love!!! But I’m one of the unlucky folks whose body chemistry doesn’t get along with this BEAUTIFUL stuff! On paper I get a mesmerising blast of smoky tobacco on a generous woody backbone that radiates a very retro atmospheric charm. However, upon touching my skin, it quickly fades into a vanilla skin scent within less than 2 hours? I thought I might have developed olfactory fatigue to it but apparently my friend couldn’t smell it on me either. Nonetheless, I’m very contented with my bottle as it’s hard to come by such a beautiful scent profile nowadays. Interesting that this was created in the 90s as it definitely gives me a much older vibe, way back to my grandparents’ golden age in the 60s. Though it doesn’t smell anything close to other contemporary styles of perfumery, I can totally see a young person pulling it off effortlessly. I would definitely rock this on a weekly basis myself if it could last a little longer on my skin. Egoiste and Antaeus are real gems from the house of Chanel that I can swear by!

mkcmn

At first, I thought it was cinnamon, and it gave me boredom because the extreme sweetness did not disappear for a long time. It has an uncomfortably harsh sweetness. I do not like.

julesmelly

I think this is far better than the Platinum Egoiste, theres a nice spicy note to it but perhaps slightly grating.

Cletus Lorentz

Vintage bottle. I get high quality cinnamon, rose, sandalwood, vanilla. A bit sweet, almost like a gourmand rose. Elegant, but not my thing. Would have guess this was a feminine targeted release if I did not know better.

Zactel

You look at the notes and you seem impressived right? And there is a lot of rave and hype. But make no mistake, this is a very oldish type of men’s fragrance. One thing the performance is going to be good. But honestly smell first, before buying. I understand why people like this fragrance as it wonderfully created but it is not my style.

Peter The Fragrance Lover

My goodness, this is a real gem.
A true masterpiece from the house of Chanel!

I finally have a full bottle of Chanel Egoiste EDT (1990). I've heard so much about this hyped fragrance for an extended period of time, I was willing to give it a chance, and I'm happy to say that I'm not disappointed.

The descriptions of the reviewers down below are pretty much spot on: A slightly rosy/floral, intensely woodsy (sandalwood), smooth, well blended, refined, subtle, gentlemanly, classic, traditional, conservative and utterly elegant and classy fragrance, with a hint of pepperiness, intense darker woods (rosewood & mahogany), leather, tobacco and a slight trace of subtle sweetness.

This is by no means a sweet fragrance, but there is a gentle and subtle hint of sweetness in this beautiful concoction. If you're worried about Chanel Egoiste EDT being overly sweet and feminine, there is no reason to - at all. Egoiste EDT is in my opinion a unisex fragrance, which is tilting slightly over to the masculine side of the spectrum.

Now, who would wear this fragrance and for what occasions?

Basically I'd say that this is a formal, elegant and festive suit and tie fragrance, for men well into their 30s and above, ideal for office environments (Egoiste EDT is a very professional smelling scent) and/or festive occasions in fall and winter, leaning nighttime. You need to have a certain maturity to your personality and an appreciation for the old school fragrances. You can indeed be below the age of 30, and still rock this beauty, if you're an "old soul".

So, I've noticed that many people at Fragrantica, Basenotes and YouTube have compared Chanel Egoiste EDT to Geo F Trumper Sandalwood Cologne, and vice versa, and yes they are indeed similar. The reason I know this is because I have both fragrances in my collection and I've sprayed one scent on one arm and the other scent on the other arm, and I've been comparing their drydown now for hours.

Since Egoiste EDT was launched in 1990 and Trumper's Sandalwood Cologne was launched in 2002, it's obvious that Trumper's Sandalwood Cologne must have been inspired by Egoiste EDT and not vice versa.

SO, YOU MAY ASK: WHAT ARE THE SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CHANEL EGOISTE EDT (1990) AND GEO F TRUMPER SANDALWOOD COLOGNE (2002)?

THE SIMILARITIES:

Both are woodsy, sandalwood fragrances, with rose/floral notes, with subtle hints of citrus, vanilla and leather. Both scents require maturity and an appreciation of old school perfumery, and both fragrances are very classic, classy, elegant, formal, festive, gentlemanly, traditional conservative old school scents. Both fragrances are unisex, leaning slightly more to the masculine side of the spectrum.

THE DIFFERENCES:

Egoiste EDT contains less citrus, Geo F Trumper Sandalwood Cologne is considerably more citrusy. Egoiste contains less vanilla, Trumper's Sandalwood Cologne contains more vanilla. Egoiste is more bitter and woodsy, and Trumper's Sandalwood Cologne is considerably sweeter and woodsy.

Egoiste is slightly darker (everything is relative, of course, but neither of these two fragrances is "dark"), more woodsy and serious, more intense, and heavier, as if it has more texture and body to it. I guess it's the tobacco note that gives this effect in Egoiste. Trumper's Sandalwood Cologne is a lighter, brighter, fresher, cleaner, more "fluffy," creamy and airy, and more upbeat and carefree woodsy fragrance.

Egoiste feels more European, and contains tobacco, while Trumper's Sandalwood Cologne lacks tobacco, but contains instead lavender, which makes it more barbershoppy and more British.

The drydown:

Egoiste's drydown has a clear progression, while Trumper's Sandalwood Cologne feels more linear - but equally beautiful and delightful.

While Egoiste's drydown feels more sour, dark and woodsy, and contains a very distinct note of tobacco, Trumper's Sandalwood Cologne feels like a lighter, sweeter and fresher spicy woodsy citrusy scent, with a hint of rubber.

Performance:

Egoiste sits closer to the skin and lasts less than 10 hours, while Trumper's Sandalwood Cologne has considerably better sillage and longevity, projects easily the first 1 hour, and lasts well over 10 hours.

Versatility and occasions:

Egoiste EDT feels more appropriate for specific formal and/or festive occasions nighttime, fall and winter, while Trumper's Sandalwood Cologne feels appropriate for any occasion, formal and informal events, day and night, all four seasons, which therefore makes it more versatile.

What Egoiste lacks in versatility, it makes up for by being a gem of a formal or elegant fall or winter fragrance.

Unlike Egoiste, Trumper's Sandalwood Cologne is very versatile and wearable, and is equally appropriate for winter, Christmas and the summer heat. Trumper's Sandalwood Cologne is absolutely suitable for the colder months, and can easily replace Chanel's Egoiste as a winter fragrance or a scent you wear for Christmas time.

Final thoughts:

They are clearly not identical at all. My conservative estimate is that they are maybe 70-80% similar, with the remaining 20-30% constituting the differences that I pointed out above.

If you have one of these two, you clearly don't need the other. I do favor Trumper's Sandalwood cologne over Egoiste since it feels like a fuller and richer fragrance, which can easily fill the shoes of Egoiste and do so much more. Egoiste feels more like a mundane, elegant daily fragrance, while Trumper's Sandalwood cologne feels truly aristocratic and regal.

If I wanted to wear a fragrance similar to Egoiste but for warm weather, I'd wear Trumper's Sandalwood Cologne. And if I want to wear something specifically for Christmas, fall, or winter, I could go with either.

In my opinion, Trumper's Sandalwood cologne edges out Chanel Egoiste in scent profile, richness, opulence, elegance, refinement, performance, and versatility.

Nonetheless, Egoiste is a real beauty, and deserves its iconic and legendary reputation.
Easily one of my top 10 designer fragrances for men, ever created.

Final score: 10/10.

Max Renn from "Videodrome": "I don't know... It's too soft... There's something too soft about it... I want something tough!" I'm trying to suppress this character, but to no avail. I get mainly rose (or more like, carnation), cinnamon and sandalwood with a bit of animalic musk and quite a bit of vanilla sweetness. And as much as I appreciate the craftsmanship and the blending -- it is really smooth and velvety, everything blends perfectly -- I feel that there is some structure or relief missing. It has a lot of depth but no focal point whatsoever to bring out the effect. At the same time, I have enjoyed smelling it on other people, and it seems to be a dedicated people pleaser. So I guess it would make a good cold weather signature fragrance, but it's not for making a statement or giving an edge to your appearance or anything like that. I have to say, though, that its simplicity is deceptive, and I've grown to appreciate it more since first smelling it and dismissing as "a christmas candle fragrance".

I have managed to get my hands on a tester, just dipped some and so far,so good. You can tell its Chanel by its richness, the openning is quite strong, spicy and masculine.I would say its perfect this fall.I can detect the musk and the cigarrete smell, and the spices, the rose is subtle but can be felt.Lets see how it develops.I will update on longevity.I categorize this scent a bit formal and festive,so i guess you gotta be looking smart if you pulling it off.I cant believe that i have quit cigarettes to smell again like cigarettes, haha.

Received Egoiste yesterday and used it today for work. It has been a dull, rainy day and this fragrance kind of fits the mood. Lasted all day, 12 hours, but it didn't project as much as I thought it could as it sat very close to the skin. Regardless, this is a beautiful & masculine scent! It's a Love!

Happy to see fragrances like this still exist. It opens up to a nice cinnamonny spicy rosy woody scent done to perfection that is hard to detect cinnamon and rose on their own but smells more like a new type of wood that smells that way. Thankfully vanilla is more of a supporting note so this is not a sweet fragrance. Leather is there but like other fragrances from this era it is just there. Tobacco note though is a bit stronger but still very smooth. Not sure where the balsamic/sour note comes from; it's definitely there in a good way that complements the overall scent profile. I suspect like all other new fragrances this also suffers from dilution and it's maybe slightly better than average in longevity and silage departments. Overall, it is a big like for me.

Mutrike

Hands down, for me, this is the best male fragrance ever made. Has been over 30 years since the first time I sniffed it. Nothing beats Egoiste. Its is so classy, well balanced, masculine (but not sporty), not too loud but also not quiet. Pure perfection.

eaudemale

Leather, rose, lots of woods and amber. A little spicy and not very sweet. I never smelled this before and it’s beautiful. Idk about its longevity but the fragrance is refined, corporate, regal. Rosewood and Mahogany are the classiest notes, if oud is Arabian prince, those are western royalty.
Very balanced, simple and natural like a very good niche.. out of the few fragrances that smell like success to me, this is one of them.

Catacal

Its smells cross between a barbershop shaving cream and then wood. I don't own it so I can't really comment too much about it but its definitely not a bad scent.

Holli

At the end of the 90s, this was so unique and beautiful to my teenage brain. I grabbed a vintage bottle, and it's definitely still nice. Not as moving as I remember, but back then to smell a dude who wasn't drenched in aquatics was a treat maybe? My husband finds it dull. I guess compared to a lot of my collection, it might be a quiet one. It smells better to me on smokers. That's not me. For a person whose presence doesn't require anything loud to make an impression. Not one who requires the newest, biggest, loudest... a self assured soul who need never tell anyone they're wearing something expensive or someone who is faking that assurance. Hehehe.

felopian kid

I blind bought it a year ago because Jeremy said it was great. At first I felt it was "meh", fine, but nothing special, a bit dated. After smelling it again recently I was blown away. This scent is gorgeous! Very pleasant. I love that sweetness. Smells quite elegant but not like you need to dress up for it (I wear this with jeans & t-shirt). Doesn't smell dated to me anymore. It smells timeless.

Jay13

This smells classic and great to me. Woody fruity spicy and lasts a long time on my skin 8 hrs+. I don’t get it but someone who’s not into fragrance tells me every time I wear it, I smell like juicy fruit gum to them lol but there are worse things you could smell like I guess.

Ozyman

I dont think this is a ground braking performer.
Today.
Maybe it was, in the days been released, because of the roses which make gender blurring men/women in the days that the separation and definition were very clear- men were meant to be very rough and women very delicate..
To me, in these days, its a calming scent, no strong screaming citruses, no strong leather/rough accords and none of the "Blue wave" agenda.
There are, deep woods smell with red rose, cinnamon and vanilla.
It makes it calm, nice, good to the nose, calming, quite and different.
I like to wear it on weekends, when im calm, after the crazy week and strong perfumes.
The name has nothing to do with the smell, im sorry.
This is a nice welcoming scent.
In my mind.
I like it- its unique!
Thanks

All has pretty much been said.
One thing I feel the need to reiterate & roar from the rooftops is ...
This Is Completely Unisex, in my humble opinion. :)

I adore it,
it's delectable,
it's captivating,
it's class.
As to be expected.
It's Chanel.

Egoïste is another classic Chanel masculine that I've long wanted to smell. I bought a vintage miniature (along with Antaeus) from the late nineties, and it is excellent. Beautifully composed from the top down, this is a modern classic. Like Antaeus, it is a cold weather scent with excellent performance. Other than that, they are polar opposites.

Egoïste opens with a striking fruity-spicy accord, led by peppery coriander and sweet orange. Woody from the beginning, it is warm and well-rounded with a sweet, balsamic amber undertone. As it develops, cloves and cinnamon emerge, adding warm, sweet spiciness, anchored by a beautiful dark, rich rose note. Rose is usually seen as a feminine note in Western perfumery, but its use here feels seamlessly, classically masculine. This could perhaps be one of the earliest mass-market male scents to prominently feature rose. I love a spicy rose accord, and this is a beautiful example of one, masculine or not.

As it dries down, tobacco adds a subtle hint of smokiness to the spices, and it becomes increasingly woody. Vanilla adds sweetness to the soft amber accord in the base, and it becomes sweetly animalic as it fades to a musky amber skin scent with hints of spices. Sillage is moderate and longevity is pretty decent.

Wonderfully warm throughout, Egoïste smells of quiet luxury. Masculine-leaning, but could work well as a unisex scent due to the rose and subtle sweetness that permeates throughout. Another beautiful composition from Jacques Polge's golden years. 4.5/5.

E.L.2002

Masterfully blended, old-school masculine fragrance.

Scent 10/10
Performance 7/10
Versatility 10/10 (I believe this is perfectly wearable in high heat; Signature scent worthy)

shewasgarbo

Egoiste is deeply masculine - the spiciness found the opening, mid and base notes in the form of coriander, cinnamon, and tobacco keeps the scent from turning into a typical homme fragrance, which I associate with Egoiste Platinum. The florals and the sandalwood brings a familiar touch of wetness and balance that balances the dryness of the spice, and the result is a clean, dark, perfume suited for the autumn and warmly-lit interiors.

Tl:dr: It's a sugar daddy scent.

Novocaine

Egoiste, a inocent sin. It can be worn selfishly

Chanel Egoiste, another sacred monster of perfumery, should not be missing from anyone's collection as long as he understands or is aware of the typical Parisian luxury and class.

Probably the first avant-garde perfume in which the rose received a true note of masculinity, a fragrance witch is on the shelves for so long since its appearance and from which a multitude of masculine perfumes draw their branches.

The opening of the perfume is strong and imposing. Exhale prestige through every pore and it does in a great style ... The recipe for success follows some ingredients executed by Jacque Polge with mastery. Rose, rosewood and sandalwood create a warm composition, a rich and opulent scent while cinnamon and dry, dusty tobacco carry the scent on a historical twist, giving it masculinity, hardness and at the same time a mysterious air.

Egoiste can be worn on special occasions, at close meetings because of the romantic note given by rose petals but also in the situation where you want to stand out at certain events where the tie or the ascot are completely necessary. It is without a doubt a mature creation.

I see it worn both in autumn and winter, being a warm perfume that wraps around your neck like a scarf. Performance is typical Edt. Both the sillage and the longevity are above average, especially on clothes.

If you really want a serious perfume for important moments that you can hold, don't look any further. It is a cornerstone of Chanel, a perfume that I can recommend you wear... selfishly))

In a dusty box of my old possessions I recently discovered an ancient flacon containing some of the very first edition - “L’Egoïste” (later renamed “Egoïste” without the definite article) - and the memories came flooding back.

Attended a memorial service yesterday for my mother so I wore L’Egoïste in her honour, since she had given me my first bottle of L’Egoïste for my birthday many years ago.
I could still smell it on my wrist this morning.

Egoiste was my signature scent in my 20s - it was also the first fragrance where I owned almost all the ancillary products, so back in the day I had the soothing aftershave balm (it was white, opaque and creamy and authentically “soothing”) and the deodorant as well as the EDT and cologne concentrée. Egoïste reminds me of optimism, adventure and those intense, passionate, youthful romances we all have at that age.

The very first time I wore Egoïste I was enchanted. An elixir of supreme elegance and style, a magic potion whose intricate beauty is seductive, a classy fragrance for a sophisticated gentleman - the complete antithesis of the “sex panther” hairy-chested desperado who imagines himself a “pickup artist” and drenches himself in something he thinks is a “pantie dropper”. Egoïste is about elegance, romance and seduction, not crass vulgarity.

Yet the name Egoïste with its implication of romantic selfishness always intrigued me. I am a bilingual French speaker and was studying at a French university when L’Egoïste came out - the advertising campaign, which I first saw at the cinema, featured the exterior of a Haussmann style apartment building with one beautiful woman after another appearing at different windows shouting “Egoïste!” (which as an insult approximates to “selfish bastard”) - the kind of thing a beautiful angry woman would shout at a man - before punctuating their anger by slamming the shutters: “Egoïste!” “Egoïste!” “Egoïste!”

Unforgettable. And a unique way of promoting a men's fragrance that seems somehow counterintuitive but was supremely effective.

Such a beautiful composition - intricate, rich, mesmerising. To my nose the woods are dominant and persist through the dry down. A backbone of Palisander, Mahogany and Sandalwood with a “dry” vanilla overlaid with a mosaic of cinnamon, tobacco, and subtle florals.
A luxurious blend.

Jacques Polge created some of my favourite fragrances and the sublime beauty of Egoïste reminds me of another favourite, Ungaro pour L’Homme II, in structure and style.

I also own the latest version of Egoïste and it is almost identical to the original vintage - wearing the two side by side, the difference is very subtle and almost certainly imperceptible to anyone who isn’t a fanatic.
The new Egoïste is definitely true to the original in terms of notes and composition - to all intents and purposes it's the same fragrance, but what it lacks is a kind of depth and resonance, like a favourite song played on a sound system without a subwoofer, presumably due to a lower percentage of Indian sandalwood and this does decrease the performance and longevity somewhat.
In any case, Egoïste is a classic and every version is, rightly, testament to its status as a legend.

Kraemer

Jacques Polge has a talent for creating deeply complex fragrances that are daring, accessible, and universally appealing.

I enjoy the evolution of this fragrance more than any other fragrance I’ve ever experienced. I wear this year round and especially enjoy it during the winter.

Salumbre

@ discreescent: Aside from its other qualities, Egoiste is a beast. EVERYONE in the room will know you're wearing it. It has a sillage like the Yellow Brick Road --people can walk on that sillage to find you anywhere and ask for a brain or a heart or to go back home.

Since you bought it at a place that's kosher, I don't know what to say. Unless maybe the older formulation is more potent, and blowing the new one out of the water, thus making you nose blind?

Airi2000

I use this perfume in the winter when I wear masculine, cool clothes. It's a heavy, warm, spicy, cinnamon-like scent, long lasting, and perfect for winter. I also use it a lot when I enjoy the scent in my home. This is my favorite scent.

Monke go brr

Smells like spices and bubblegum. There is this vintage nostalgic feel although I can't remember smelling it.

Oh I know! It's the pipe tobacco that adds the vintage feel. I love the feeling that this perfume evokes just pure relax and childhood.

Silverquick

This was a guilty pleasure for me in the late 1999s. As a woman I would sneak into our local upmarket department store and spray myself (I did this with Lagerfeld, Grey Flannel and Fahrenheit too)….I’m hoping to source a vintage bottle and revisit this. I remember it as spicy (I recall boozy juicy raisins on the top notes) and ambery, refined and not overly floral. A fav male targeted scent of it’s time. But I’ve always felt it was genderless.

sltchd

I tried a sample of Egoiste and my girlfriend was crazy about it, she couldnt stop sniffing and actually bought this for me.

Im kinda neutral towards it because i really like the top and base notes, middle not so much.

Its perfect for the winter months or at night.
Especially for occasions where you gotta be dressed nicely.

Trab

Still one of my favorite Chanel fragrances - I have an older bottle - don't know it the newer bottles are as good as the older - i like to wear this in early spring or fall - I know that when it just got market in the early nineties, I was not a great fan of it - I thought I was too young to wear it ( I was 18 years old ) and at that time it was also not in my budget - by the end of the nineties I bought a bottle and though it has never been my everyday fragrance or signature scent - I really love to wear it from time to time, certainly in early spring or fall - it's very uplifting for me – if you don’t like cinnamon this is not the one for you combined with some woods and the rose – you get the vibe of a nineties masterpiece – for the younger crowd a bit outdated ( an maybe for them the platinum is better ) but for a confident adult something to enjoy - today I wear it - and most probably it will disappear in the back of the closet for a couple of months to re-wear it in the fall - this way it will always be magical wearing and enjoying it - it's like a good cognac, not for everyday but just occasionally and that way the appreciation is best

Kuldeep S

Entirely different than platinum egoiste. It is sweeter kinda remind me of obsession for men. Sweet powdery.

discreescent

Just bought 100ml spayer of this jam and I`m so disapointed of the performance it makes me wanna cry, really.
I spayed it on my neck and body, like 6-7 sprays and its like gone in 15 minutes to half an hour.No whifs,no stay on skin nor clothes..nothing. Got it from official store so no online or fake.
I do also own a splash bottle vintage which is a decent performer.
Has anyone else also issues with this? Please let me now.

Eva Wu

A gorgeous confection from the very beginning of the 90's, kind of like the friendly younger brother of Antaeus, or the handsome male cousin of Poison.

It's a delicious, rich combination of smooth woods and fruity notes, reminiscent of upmarket lipstick and fine red wine, with a touch of mentholated tobacco. It hints at earthly vices in a flirty manner while still remaining utterly professional and presentable.

It feels fairly genderless to me, the way a nice blazer or some dashing trousers might be, a smart fashion statement without any unnecessary fuss or extraneous trimmings.

I'm so tempted to wear it, as like a sober alternative to Armani Sì, for the days where I want whimsy and poise in equal measure.

ZiggySmellsGood

I’ve owned this one for a long time ! I’m still on my first bottle . I started collecting on and off for the last 15 years , and in that time I’ve had most of the other male Chanel fragrances and this is the only one I still have ! The others followed the trend with the fresh oriental vibe ! I love fragrances that don’t follow the trends . This one is almost gourmand to me ! I love the Cinnamon with the sandalwood it adds a sweet creaminess, and the amber adds warmth! Woman love this one ! This is a good winter fragrance and a wonderful date night fragrance as well . People slept on this one so I keep it in the arsenal like a secret weapon for occasions lol . It is a one of a kind EDT . It’s stands alone . The longevity and performance are great !Guerlain Ideal EDP on my clothes reminded me of it but I don’t know of any fragrance that it can it be compared to ! It lasts forever and leaves a scent trail that people will follow . If you want compliments this is one you should own !

I’m shocked about that cinnamon is the predominant note voted , because in the current version of Egoiste I don't get it at all.
The note of "Brazilian Rosewood" is funny because the real Brazilian Rosewood is one of the most protected trees on the planet and has not been used anywhere for years, let alone in the 2022 perfumery.
The wood in question is the Bois de Rose, which, in the current formulation has been removed and which we find here in a chemical form as Linalool.
The note of "carnation" is an accord made from rose + white flowers such as jasmine and ylang ylang + cloves + vanillin or heliotropin but which, again in the current formulation, we find in the form of Eugenol and Isoeugenol.
Tobacco? Where ????
Leaving aside this necessary introduction, it is one of the most interesting and complex fragrances I have ever smelled.
The opening, which is the most interesting part, could make some people turn up their noses, but this is also good because it allows us to distinguish a fragrance with character from the rest of the cosmic nothing proposed in today's times, both commercial and "niche".
The opening is mainly chemical, I only feel coriander natural.
Dry down with musky mallow, cloves (eugenol and isoeugenol) and vanilla with something vaguely woody and that’s where the fragrance loses a bit.
The current formulation is quite chemical, but it is still better than 90% of the fragrances proposed in the last 15 years.
What this fragrance evokes to me is something incredible, but that I cannot explain, something melancholy but pleasant.
If I had to describe the texture of this fragrance I would describe it as that of a veil.
If I had to give it a season I would give it spring, a beautiful cloudy spring day, neither hot nor cold. Daytime fragrance.
Performance in general quite poor, almost painful, always talking about the current formulation.

I am wearing Egoiste today, but I also own Geo F Trumper Sandalwood. One of the other commenters is right: Sandalwood is a dead-ringer for Egoiste! If you want a great fragrance that's an alternative to Egoiste, you should consider Sandalwood.

derby2169

Egoiste is more than just a fragrance for me. It is the scent that sparked my interest in fragrance as a whole.
My father had bought a bottle of it in the 90s but never wore it because he was a fougere only kind of guy. So the bottle just sat in the cupboard for about a decade where I discovered it as an older teenager looking for something to wear out. I remember spraying it on and asking myself 'wtf is this?' Candied clementine, warm spices, tobacco, rose, sandalwood. I had only smelled body sprays and CK fragrances at that point, so Egoiste seemed like the smell of heaven. I still own that bottle, I practically only smell the atomizer since it is 90% empty.

Few weeks ago I was given the newest reformulation as a gift so I thought I might as well review it even though it is quite different.
So the candied clementine top note is still there but more emphasis is given on the opening rosewood note so it kind of overshadows it. The vintage had the backing of a sweet dewy rose note, I don't get the same now, more of a soft floral powdery touch. The tobacco is nice but different too. It's smokier, thinner, like ripping apart a cigarette rather than a cigar.
However the good news is that even with the massive cutdown on sandalwood in the last decade, Chanel has still managed to keep a very elegant, smooth musky ambery sandalwood in the base, it's very close. In fact I would call this version a definite 'sandalwood fragrance' and a solid one at that.
Most importantly the DNA is still there. it's immediately recognizable even though it feels slightly emaciated.
Even with all this tampering it still captures some of that magic, although strangely, instead of modernizing it with time, it feels more mature and austere. Less candied sweetness, fresh rose, and warmth and roundness, it feels straightforward and serious.
I definitely still enjoy it and keep a new bottle in my collection, but I hope the noses at Chanel find a way to breath some life into future reformulations like they did with the Platinum version.

melusina1982

"OH MY GOD!" said the Janice from Friends that lives in me the first time I smelled it.
Spicy, rosy apple pie that wears like a dream. Totally unisex if you care about that.
I see a small bottle in my near future. Maybe the day I will also buy the biggest Antaeus I can find.

ski808

Having received the original 1990 formulation as a gift, I've kept Egoiste aside making way for other more fashionable men's fragrances for the time. In my experience, it was always too 'heady' for me - yes for 30 years it had always given me a headache thus shelved aside to steep. Now closer to 50 than I am to 40, I have slowly opened up to it, and believe my half full 1990s formulation Egoiste has finally charmed me - but I still can't pull off wearing it in public.

cdarrach

Missed opportunity to include a narcissus note given the title

I never smelled Egoiste before. Today I was in a mall in Vienna, Austria and I finally got a chance to check it out. I was wearing Sandalwood Cologne by Geo. F. Trumper. After smelling the tester I wasn't sure which one I was smelling. They are very very close. I could be wrong.

Went for Christmas shopping to get myself a well deserved present... and decided to get myself a bottle of Chanel Egoiste (that's after reading all your good reviews below and I promised not to try other perfumes). Not disappointed. This smells so good! My god, so, so good! I am totally in love with Chanel Egoiste! Having owned and finished many bottles of Platinum Egoiste (since its released), I only just discovered Egoiste... I am so ashamed of myself.

I love how this perfume presents itself. Firstly the bottle is so classy-'chanel-ish' looking, and secondly the scent itself is not the kind of over-powering woodsy scent. I love the sweetness from rosewood which blends in so well with the rest of the notes... I can also sense the orange and flowers. Cinnamon and sandalwood are also not fighting to be the prominent note here too. Every note just blend in so well with each other.. wow!

This is going to be my left signature scent, right being Platinum Egoiste (haha!)

Thatbwoy

I don’t think Chanel had made a decent male fragrances since this. I actually think this is the best thing the label has produced for men. It’s a perfect bridging step getting the 80s into the 90s. I think this was the pinnacle for them and they haven’t really surpassed it.

But then again they never really appeared like they wanted to, everything since this came out over 30 years had been very safe very generic and very mass market.

That said this does feel as though it was a precursor to the swathe of these clean chypres following the release of the ‘platinum’ version (which I found a disappointment). The sandalwood, rosewood and slightly smoky coriander just reek of a classic style that’s not present nowadays. It’s imitated and some might say “ So & so is this generations such & such” but they’re wrong. This scent kind of harks back to that silver screen matinee ideology you can imagine Douglas Fairbanks Jr or Errol Flynn wearing this, or John Coltrane or Nat King Cole wearing it; while Tom Cruise and Mick Hucknall would definitely wear the Platinum version

If I only had to choose one fragrance for a signature scent; this would be very much be the top contender.

You could wear this on occasions, meetings, something formal or in a night out mostly for cold weather so this perfume is not a summer fragrance nor a day time fragrance unless it rains or cloudy outside

brokesta911

Chanel Egosite (1990) - spicy sandalwood - #jacquespolge’s perfume is a combination of spices (coriander, pepper, cinnamon), Creamy sandalwood on a base of rose, leather & tobacco was an iconoclast fragrance back in the 90s amidst the Cool waters and Ckones. Today, it’s a well-mannered and refined chap, who had too much partying & galavanting in his past life

ckorp8

I’ve been using Egoïste for years on and off. Today I just did a total body spray of it and suddenly I just got an Ombre dan l’eau vibe from it. A rather green rose scent emerged. Funny but I’ve never thought of Egoïste being a rose perfume until now. Loving it that much more. Always been loving it for its medicinal vibe before. Lol.

rosetinteddream

After my experience with a new formulation of Platinum Egoiste (which is the most barbershop like fragrance I can handle and I’ve come to actually like it), I was scared to try this. Oh how I should have tried this first...

I got a vintage 50 ml spray off eBay, and damn it takes everything in me to not spray this all the time. I put it on my Chanel shelve and wait for the days I really need it. It’s so beautiful.

I don’t know the right words. It’s comforting and clean. It’s crisp and refreshing, but not in an aquatic or green kinda way. It reminds me of walking around on very brisk days in the winter, then coming inside where things with cinnamon and other spices are being mulled on the stove.

I mostly get cinnamon, rose, wood, and powder (vanilla). Which is an absolutely astounding combination. I’ve seen some people describe this as difficult to wear, but not for me. I find that a lot of more modern “men’s scents” and mass appealing scents that men are used to, those fragrances seem kind of shallow to me. This has so much depth to me, and elegance. But I don’t think you have to be dressed nicely, you just have to believe in yourself 😊

Update 02/10 - Bought a reform of this. I think, judging the bottle, batch code and the math of every 8 years, that my bottle is from 2003 or 2011. It’s not like the bottle pictured, it’s like my vintage 90s 50 ml bottle - one rectangular piece (this newer one is 100 ml). It, to my nose, smells and performs just like the original. I think the notes are stronger in the beginning and middle stages with my vintage. But the dry down, the magic, has not been lost. With this bottle anyways, which I will note is a tester I bought off Mercari.

EGOISTE

Egoiste is technically a man's scent, but I've been enjoying it ever since the weather turned cold. There's a sharp pine/fir scent to it that smells just wonderful on a cold late fall/winter day. I often can't get away with wearing men's scents, they're sometimes way too obvious. But Egoiste slides in on a crisp, cold forest-y note that isn't immediately recognizable as simply "Male." It's very earthy. A certain type of woman can definitely pull this off. I love being subversive when I wear this! I bought it "for my husband," but I dash on a bit myself on the coldest days.

That tobacco, rosewood, cinnamon, vanilla combo is heavenly. The vanilla is so very subtle that I hesitate to even classify it as a gourmand.

I'm tempted to hunt down some Bois Noir just to experience it.

protosv

Such an incredible fragrance for the fall, a throwback to when designer perfumery was still doing big things and executing on new ideas. A far cry from today's endless stream of blue flankers. I own all three "versions" of this fragrance, which is to say the most recent EDT in the shorter square bottle, a 125ml splash of the "vintage" EDT formulation, and I am *extremely* fortunate to have found a bottle of the Cologne Concentree as well. No, I don't own Bois Noir, and prices are in the stratosphere so I never will. No fragrance can ever be worth that kind of money except for perhaps some exclusive genuine Oud oils.

Anyway, this stuff is a perfect combination of rose, rosewood, cinnamon and sandalwood as the main notes I get. There is definitely an accent of amber/orange that I get as well, but it's a supporting note to my nose. Starts out with the more prominent notes of amber/orange and the rose, but the rosewood/cinnamon comes out relatively soon thereafter, and combines with the amazing sandalwood in the base to make an incredible warm, classy and comforting fragrance. Everyone talks about how daring this is, and when compared to other designer and mainstream fragrances they're definitely right, but it achieves the difficult feat of being unique and "niche-smelling" while remaining eminently pleasant and appealing to a broad, non-fraghead audience.

When comparing the current formulation to the vintage EDT, there is to my nose a pronounced and very clear difference in the fragrances. They are the same fragrance, but the current formula is the compressed audio "MP3" version played over bluetooth through wireless earbuds, whereas the vintage is the original master recording played through a $15,000 Hi-Fi sound system, if that analogy makes sense. For the current formula, the rosewood is muted, the cinnamon is receded, and I think they "modernized" it a bit by making the amber and vanilla notes more prominent. By contrast, the vintage has *much* more rosewood and cinnamon, and there is almost a "mulling spices" accord that comes across, nearly like a sweet combination of star anise, nutmeg and allspice, but without smelling gourmand at all. The transition into the base is something special, as I believe that this old formula was still using genuine mysore sandalwood, something which I highly doubt is in the new formulation. It's absolutely beautiful, and when this came out, I can see why it was so revolutionary.

The cologne concentree, true to its name, is an even more condensed version of the vintage EDT (unlike the BS marketing of half the new releases as "intense"), with even richer cinnamon and rosewood, and almost takes on a spicy accord. The development is slow and long-lasting, and the same beautiful sandalwood drydown is there. It lasts for an eternity. That said, I actually think the vintage EDT is such a high quality formula and resembles the concentree so much that there's no need to pay the crazy asking prices out there for the concentree, just get the vintage EDT, which is well worth the high price these days, whereas the concentree isn't worth the insane prices out there. If you're willing to drop the cash for a bottle of the latest Parums de Marly or MFK or Tom Ford, there's no reason you can't afford this one. Not to mention this fragrance blows away most of the "niche" stuff we're seeing pumped out today, especially when you consider that most of the larger niche brands have simply sold out to the major cosmetics congomerates like LVMH, Arden, Lauder, etc.

All that said, to be clear, I still think Chanel has done incredibly well even with the current formulation, as it is unquestionably Egoiste, and only an expert smelling them side by side would pick out the differences. I think a lot of the complaining about the new formula is coming from people who wore this back in the day, and have a basis for comparison. But if you're new to this fragrance, the new formula is still fantastic, and does the old formula justice well, despite the restrictions and limitations handed down from IFRA Central Command. Even the sandalwood in the base, which is probably not the real mysore stuff any longer is smooth, complex, creamy and wonderful. I would say that unless you're a total devotee of this fragrance, are a big fragrance nerd (there's nothing wrong with this btw, I'm right here next to you, and this is Fragrantica after all...), and wore it back in the day, then it might be worth splurging for the vintage if you can muster the cash. But if not, you won't suffer too much with the new formulation.

TeachOlfactoryArt

Woody-spicy powdery creamy baked goods, borderline gourmand, and eternal. No one note sticks out; the overall effect is of a guerlain-like appetizing tasty ambery pastry-like goodness, but with the plush comfort and softness of classic Chanel. I'd almost say it's Chanel's version of Shalimar for men, even though they couldn't smell more different.

This was ahead of its time and remains so. I have 3 bottles going back over a 20 year period. All smell nearly identical. All are beastly, so go easy on the trigger. More than 3 sprays and you'll fill a room. Great for fall and winter but could be a year-round signature. Lasts forever on a scarf or clothes. I spritz the inside of my cardigans and anytime I need to relax, just smell the inside...

Without any doubt this is a masterpiece!

It's about TIME for CHANEL to give us - A PARFUM VERSION OF EGOISTE!

PLEASE CHANEL make a counter offer for Dior Sauvage Elixir - not for Blah de Chanel please 🙏 no!

Egoiste Parfum and it's a seller!

SympathyForTheDevil

Masterpiece, but I'm running low on my 2012. bottle :( I have streamlined cap in line with glass bottle. New caps are smaller than bottles. Did the reformulation happen or juice is still the same godness it was?

Swashbuckler9x

There is something undeniably liquorice-y about this. It's cold and detached, hair gel, combed back and absolutely does not care who it does or does not please 😉

This is a flamboyant mafia boss with well-groomed henchmen.

I hate coriander, and I kind of respect the audacity of this fragrance.
It smells like sambucca and arrogance.

A hero doesn't smell like this. Only a villain can.

HorlicksB4Bed

Chanel.. if you're listening, PLEASE give us a Parfum version of Egoiste!!! 🙏🙏🙏

Usually I’m not into mens fragrances, many of them just smell like musky deodorant to my untrained nose. I’m just getting into mens fragrances and starting to appreciate them. However for the first time in my life i had to ask a man what he was wearing.

Today at the bakery we formed a line outside with our umbrellas, it was raining. The mid 30s man in front of me smelled so good, even better than freshly baked bread. Usually I’m not brave enough to ask but I had to know. So I told him how good he smelled and asked him the name of his perfume. He was such a kind, soft-spoken gentleman and helped me out.

What makes this different to me is that it smelled somewhat creamy, a little bit sweet, unisex? Not screechy like many mens perfumes. I can’t distinguish any specific notes from my short experience, but it was dark and mysterious. It’s so elegant, so high-class just like the man that was wearing it. Most importantly it isn’t trying too hard. It simply smelled divine to me.

PPAN

I'm spraying a 2021 batch, and on me the three strongest initial notes are carnation, cinnamon and amber, resulting in a mellow, floral, sweet aroma. There's definitely some woody elements, but very well blended and stay fully at the back.

After about half an hour, I put my nose close and take a deep inhale. And boy, I can smell the rose, the rosewood, the mahogany, the vanilla, they are all simultaneously powdery, green even, and woody - the polished kind of wood. It's sooo complex and captivating, mysterious even, while staying completely professional and suitable for all occasions.

This seems to really match its description as "a very conservative masculine fragrance" aka completely different from the loud, metallic Platinum Egoistic. Way more enjoyable for me!

SushiPizza

When I was a child I found it in my house. I still don’t know who’s perfume that was. When I sniffed it, I was literally like critic guy from Ratatouille. It took me on red carpet. Many celebrities around me. But this perfume is super strong I can’t wear it daily in Japan . So one day when I become famous and if I have opportunity to go party, this will be my armor.

FirstSense

What a strange experience this fragrance is. I bought and used it in the nineties and I fell in love with this super elegant stylish Chanel fragrance. The lovely citrus opening and the heart of Egoïste, the most beautiful fresh cinnamon smell that existed on this planet. The blend was so well made by mister Polge that you could speak about a masterpiece. I have never bought a second bottle because it was rather expensive in those days and I could not spend much money on frags. Today I received this so long wanted 100 ml eau de toilette in that beautiful packaging. A nice black box and a simplistic but very Chanel style bottle. I sprayed it with great expectations and was immediately very disappointed. What a horrible burnt tobacco leave smell after the alcoholic mandarin opening that disappears in seconds. It was so bad that I thought I had a spoiled bottle in my hands. After the first dry down there was that lovely cinnamon with sandelwood, rose and vanilla. That smell was like meeting an old friend. But still there was that terrible burnt tobacco note pinching through that great cinnamon heart of the legendary fragrance. After two hours the horrible note was pushed back but it never really disappeared. But that wonderful unique cinnamon and sandelwood smell kept me company during a long sunny autumn forrest walk. I could smell the scent projecting during the walk and kept on sniffing my hand. But somehow it was not the lost friend I expected. The longevity is great, not beastly in anyway, but very acceptable. And in the final dry down that filthy burnt tobacco smell disappeared almost completely. The lovely smell that I was so fond of was still there.

For me this version of Egoïste is a disappointment. But I love this fragrance so much that I will give it an other chance. I hope it matures in the bottle and the maceration will smother that burnt tobacco smell. I want my selfish cinnamon friend back please.

Edit: 2-10-21. Sometimes you have to accept that a friend that you haven't seen for a long time has changed. As long as the same soul exists it is allright. I am getting used to that altered blend of the spices. The beautiful cinnamon is still there and that burned tobacco note is somehow toned down. The perfume is getting better to my nose and I am beginning to accept the changes of Egoïste and ordered a backup bottle. The love is still there and I'll hope Chanel will never discontinu this epic wonder of perfumery.

sergiuniculescu

I have Egoiste and Platinum Egoiste, both 2020.11 batches. All I can say Platinum is stronger in projection and sillage, but both are very good in longevity, easily 8h+
Egoiste is smooth, almost like a bubble around you, but after 1h is sitting close to your skin. I wish projection to be better.

emi2000

honestly one of the best male fragrances out there, very strong and sexy

xpetra82

love its so much...super unisex, woody, creamy, slightly sweet . I bought it for my hubby and i kept it for myself...the only thing i don't really like is the bottle !

BeardedIris

A woody-spicy ambrette-sandalwood perfume. Distinctive, sexy, full of masculine muskiness and definitely for the night-time. This is one of those perfumes I'm drawn to against my better judgment. The scent of Mr Wrong — independent, desirable, doesn't run with the crowd and with a glint of metallic cruelty. Very well-named by Chanel. For me the main note is ambrette seed, not listed by Fragrantica, with rosewood and coriander, supported by dry, earthy sandalwood in the base.

For those wanting something less wolfishly aromatic and more unisex Chanel No 18 has ambrette seed covered.

billblm93

Unisex
oriental warm spicy tobaccoish type of smell
i dont see myself wearing it but i respect the quality
best suited for cold nights with you sidepiece

SupermanEcstacy

You're here because you're wondering if it's this or Platinum...Trust me ffs this is the one. This stuff is niche quality and friggin beautiful man. As I commented with the Platinum, Egoiste original quite literally is in the same ballpark as Green Irish Tweed and someone below said they caught the same vibe with this as Bois Du Portugal and I won't disagree, because it's an absolute quality scent. I purchase this fragrance once every two months, yes it's how much I love it and how much I use.

miedziany

Warm and Very strong , 8+ Longevity and 2+ Sillage

Ford4630

Really glad I have this in my collection. Elegant, timeless, high-class scent that clearly separates the men from the boys without being old fashioned. Reasonable performance and value. Easy to recommend.

nireza

Don’t really like it. Smell like incense. Temple like smell.

GreatGreyOwl

I would really love this, but the sweet, oppressive, synthetic sandalwood that lingers forever ruins it for me.

WGG

Yes, Egoiste, you have to be confident to carry this off. Quite formal too, maybe a 'jacket and shoes' fragrance. I love Egoiste but has to be the right mood or circumstance. Excellent performance on me. Just tips Trumper's Sandalwood, somehow smells more complete.
4.5/5
Update: weather's still cool/cold here, wore this out a week ago, like bumping into a long lost friend. Borderline perfection, I upped my rating. Those sort of nights I sometimes use Royal Oud, different frags but similar job. I find Egoiste has better performance.

Andy the Frenchy

Tried it again recently. I confirm my first thoughts: all about cinnamon and rose. Rosewood is present, but only in the base. Sandalwood... not sure there is any, other than in the pyramid, but vanilla makes the trick. Very unisex, as per today standards.
Forgettable, in my book. Hadn't it been issued by Chanel, I'm pretty sure everyone else would have also forgotten about it.
Poor performance doesn't help liking it, either, but used as an aftershave before spraying something more serious like Trumper Sandalwood or HdP 1899, it might do the job.

moderndandy_swap

I got a decant, its smells really good, and indeed similar to Bois des Iles, but why its so weak? It appears dull and diluted. IS it my skin or nose?

korleis

Boom! This is masculinity in a flask. Spicy, warm and a bit creamy. Heavy projection. Will grow hair on your chest. Best for the colder months!

Ozyman

It is special.

I wouldnt say the best fragrance in the world...but it is special and very enjoyable and unique!

Has a mysterious and dark opening!
And then the fun begins.

It has a character, its not the usual citrus or aquatic scent like all the rest of them today.
Yes it has warm dark rose in it and vanilla.
But think of both as expression of your gentle and sensitive sides.
No need to be scared. You are a strong tough man but you also sensitive and gentle.

Well, when i want something that defines me from the others, and give me some special edge-
I ware this one.
It is good.
Of course i wont quit terre de hermes etd,
But i really like Egoiste too.
It stays long on the body.

Thanks

Mr.Vollan

This is one of my absolute favorites
Truly a masterpiece!!

Callista25

Egoiste is often called the masculine version of Bois des Iles. I think it is more about the vibe you want. Bois des Iles plays up sandalwood's meditative and sensual aspects. Egoiste pairs sandalwood with rich dried fruit notes, woods, and resins making it much more rooted and with stronger projection, like a Chanel does Serge Lutens. This is one masculine i would definitely wear!

frangiris

Maybe my sample went bad, but I smell a strong sour note that reminds me of urine... I prefer Platinum Egoiste!

Akscent

Years ago, when this fragrance was new on the market, it was a very close to ubiqiuty. The advertising campaign was striking and ran in heavy rotation all over television and glossy print media. As a guy in my middle 20s, I tried Egoïste and thought it was just OK and too expensive to be worth bothering with. Encountering it again nearly 30 years later, I recognize that I wasn't ready for this fragrance the first time I tried it. These days, I love it.

Egoïste is a fragrance that requires a settled, contemplative personality to appreciate its complexity. Many do not like the opening of this scent. I happen to love the dark, brooding mahogany note and the way that the citrus and bright, green, spicy coriander play off it. The rosewood note that is also included adds to the warmth and subtly foreshadows the heart notes.

This is not the text book, "happy, uplifting" opening that is what we have been conditioned to expect in fragrances. Thus, the opening is expectation shattering, unique and unsettling to many folks. On paper test strips, the mandarin orange note is stronger than on skin and this factor can unbalance the opening. A similar phenomenon can occur if you spray your clothes. On my skin, the citrus and spice are decidedly subdued. Also on my skin, the opening is heady and slow developing but as the heart notes begin to emerge, the woods from the opening meld with the spice of the cinnamon and the geranium's clove note as well as the plush rose to create a rich, beautiful, dignified blend of scents that is big, bold and fantastic. This phase of the fragrance is hard to pull off, requiring self confidence.

The dry down brings a rich tobacco note and a vanilla tinged ambery leather that has suffered in the post-IFRA era reworking of this scent. I wish Chanel had made a better effort to find a richer, perhaps somewhat animalic leather accord that was a more fitting anchor to such a deep fragrance.

I get between 7-9 hours longevity and moderate projection from Egoïste. The fragrance has several masculine-identified notes and some that are seen as female. I suspect that most users of this scent will be men, but I can easily imagine women happily wearing it as well. To my nose, the scent is best suited for cold weather use. In warm weather, the fragrance can become rather overwhelming, particularly if sprayed liberally.

Egoïste is utterly out of step with current fragrance trends. I love this attribute of this great scent and think that it is well worth trying. The divisive opening, unfortunately, means I can't recommend buying without spraying on skin first. I also think folks who like to spray their clothes may find wearing this fragrance tricky, at least for the first phase of the progression. I do love this scent and enjoy it in all of its phases. Give it a try and see if it boosts your ego.

Jole_pinoy

This smells aweful. I dont like the dried saliva smell because of the cinnamon in it. I dont like cinnamon smell either.

I first purchased this while browsing around a Dillards fragrance counter. It was my first year of college, and the salesman, who appeared to be a college kid himself who bore a striking resemblance to a young Tony Danza, directed my attention to this scent (The television ads for this frag back then were hillarious!) Tony then said that since he was wearing that particular scent, invited me to sniff his neck. After an awkward pretend neck sniff, I then tried it out on my wrist and decided to get it. Some days, or weeks, later I was visiting with my parents when my sweet little mama approached me with her big, sad, "Precious Moments" figurine brown eyes to let me know that she didn't like the cologne I was wearing, and that it was "sickly sweet", and smelled like "marijuana cigarettes". So, I stopped wearing it. I had never realized before that one could feel guilt from wearing a fragrance. Time marched on and I forgot all about this one, until recently. Since I like spooky scents, and have begun a collection of fragrances, I decided to revisit this one. I couldn't test it out first since about the only physical place you can buy it anymore is at a Chanel boutique, and the nearest one to me is at least a 90 min drive away. So I took a leap of faith and bought a bottle from Chanel online. And, yes, I appreciate it even more than the first time. And I would definitely place it in the "spooky scents" category. (A huge plus for me!) And I don't think Mama would mind me wearing it now if she knew how much I enjoy it.

mendalia

Ok, I honestly could not love this fragrance more. I remember the first time I smelled this, I followed the man until I could stop him and find out what he was wearing. This for me is like female catnip. You might not be cute but put some of this on and you are instantly sexy lol. You can't get this really anymore in the US, just the gross Platinum version which to me smells awful and instantly headache inducing. I bought some last time I was at the duty free in Paris and I will actually wear this sometimes myself. This smells amazing.Seriously the most underrated cologne.

Gurreu

Doesn't last very long on my skin, but the scent is just heavenly, and will always be among my top 3 for sure.

Can't get enough of the opening.

Despite the not so good perfornance (on me) it gets an overall 9,9/10.

dabatch

nothing beats egoiste splash in a fresh shaven face on a cold morning. nothing. 10/10

Ticktock

My second favourite Chanel after Antaeus.
A superb scent. Both simple and sophisticated. I could easily feel like I'm wearing a bespoke tuxedo when wearing this.
Creamy, sweet, spicy and warming and also a little powdery and sensual.

I get some wood, rose, cinnamon, vanilla, sandalwood and sweet tobacco, leather and coriander.
Another classic for me.

Chanel Egoïste is as British as a French scent can be. How could you think of it otherwise than a British gentleman (probably a historian, or an archaeologist) in his tweed jacket, seated on his Chesterfield chair, sipping cinnamon tea brought from Ceylon and puffing his pipe, loaded with sweet tobacco?

Egoïste opens with a sweet, slightly musky and smoky fest (it must be the mahogany and the rosewood, as I'm not familiar with those scents profiles), with a very faint touch of citrusy accord that adds a peculiar fruity note, before entirely leaving the show to the beautiful cinnamon and rose accord - with the cinnamon definitely stronger than the rose - that will keep you company until the drydown, when more woods (sandalwood) and a decadent tobacco accord go play with the cinnamon.

This scent comes from the '90s, but to me it evokes the beginning of the century. It doesn't smell outdated, but it echoes a time when refinement was higher than today's standards. Not super formal in my view (I would not wear this with a tuxedo), definitely autumn- and winter-ish, it projects quite decently during the first few hours without being an annoying scent, I would see its use mostly as a meditation scent, like you would sip some sweet wines for your own personal enjoyment. My sample is a Chanel miniature from 1993, with batch code 2002. Definitely a love.

JmThms

For all of you who love this fragrance, whether it be from some sort of abstract art perspective, or straight out like the scent on even a more superficial level - God bless you. I don't like it. This is another "challenging" scent that I can't wrap my head nor nose around. It smells like an ashtray and I can't get that association out of my head. It joins Cartier Declaration, Floris No. 89, Pour Un Homme de Caron, and even Habit Rouge as scents that, euphemistically, "challenge" me. I even like Aramis better. The first criteria I have is simply that the fragrance smells good without me trying too hard. I even like John Varvatos Dark Rebel and Dark Rebel Rider. They're in my collection of signature favorites. Those two are a bit challenging. But some just can't meet that first criteria for me. This Egoiste smells like some kind of overly hot spicey, smokey, dry and dusty potpourri that went wrong. Ashtray potpourri. Like the perfumer intended on creating an artful, challenging scent but it all went wrong. I will say that the intense ashtray vibes subside somewhat as it dries down, so if the life cycle of Egoiste were to start where the profile is in the drydown, the fragrance would be much better.
Update two months later: wearing Egoiste again for the second time. Don't hate it quite as much the second time but still not a like. Simply smells like an ashtray, which can't please in any way. Egoiste is almost there, but the ashtray association needs to be removed altogether. I've tried Platinum Egoiste since. It's a little bit better, but still too "challenging". A hybrid of Green Irish Tweed DNA and a Fougere is cool on paper, but in reality it produces a weird headache-inducing persistent metalic smell. Jaques Polge didn't impress me here.
Update: Just got a sample of Costume National Homme. Whereas Egoiste is potpourri "gone wrong", Costume National Homme is potpourri done right. Costume National Homme is the fragrance that Egoiste wishes it was. It has sweeter spices with the woods, smells like normal potpourri, and doesn't smell like an ashtray. Maybe CN Homme will readjust my nose to better appreciate Egoiste.

Update 02/23: Well, well, well. Nearly two years later and I think my nose has finally come around to Chanel Egoiste. I like leaving the history of my reviews intact to illustrate the evolution of my nose, and how perception and appreciation changes over time. I think Egoiste has entered the realm of a 'Like' for me. The harsh 'ashtray' association has been subsumed underneath the creamy sandalwood and sweet spices. The opening is still the harshest but the drydown has become pleasant. Still like Costume National Homme better though.

Masculine take on Samsara

It_Stings_The_Nostrils

Sometimes the opening of ĒGOÏSTE can be off-putting. For me, this is one of those fragrances that smell better with time.
Upon initial spray (and throughout the majority of the fragrance) to my nose, I get a very strong smell of clove buds (even though cinnamon is a listed note, I smell cloves) with a wet red rose and a dry piped tobacco with some sweet amber and a soft woody touch. To my nose, these notes all clash together in the opening and can be quite harsh, but once you allow ĒGOÏSTE to develop, the notes smooth out and really work well with each other. It softens up and gets creamy and very musky towards the end. definitely has that masculine powerhouse vibe but also has a modern gentleman vibe.
Smells better in colder weather.

rmf1112

A cinnamon bomb, you will smell like a craft store in December at the beginning, and as the cinnamon tapers off, you’re left with a dusty woody scent that is fairly faint Imo. Don’t bother paying twice as much at the ‘discounters’ for this one as you can get it cheaper straight from Chanel. Not a favorite but surely cuts through the winter cold at first application.

Much improved by layering with something iso-e based like Phaedon Oliban, which is fantastic today.

80sGuy

If there was one fragrance that I wish would be brought back to life this would be it. Reformulations aside it’s not even offered here in Canada. Platinum replaced it here 20 years ago and non of the distributors have looked back.
Platinum is as similar as it is better, a totally different creature. If it’s about counter space drop one of your 3 versions of bleu and let’s show them what they’ve been missing.

@ION,,,,nailed it 100%!

What the cenobites of Clive Barker’s “The Hellbound Heart” smell like and appreciate being gifted upon solving the Lament Configuration. Pure bliss.

gieddre

This perfume smells extremely different on my and my friend's skin. At first, it seems like heavy notes of wood and tobacco, then smoky rose and clear carnation appears and finally it leaves a hint of leather, vanilla and tobacco. I can picture this perfume as an intelligent conversation with stylish gentleman somewhere at the Irish pub or vintage style cafe. Though this perfume is for homme, I would describe it as unisex.

Aguirre

Bois des Iles has abandoned its fresh, exotic florals and aldehydes. It is now drinking a cup of fragrant Rooibos tea with sweet cinnamon after showering in sandalwood oil and splashing some rosewater on.

Glorious.

ION

I have been wearing "Egoiste since the first day it came out!
Complex and multifacet, very different from Platinum Egoiste and all the monotonous offerings of today's market.
It really is a perfume for a man with culture and complexity (yes, this is a very masculine smell) and an "easy to like" perfume but "not an easy to wear" one, if you understand the difference.
"Egoiste", is also a perfume that while everyone agree is great, they go out and buy something else.
The reason? It's complexity of character (and not so pleasant top notes) are not something many men can identify with.
Such a European, in the truest meaning of the word, perfume indeed!

I wouldn't say that tobacco or leather are evident here, so if you are a fan or "enemy" of these notes you should know that the main show is coming from elsewhere; mainly Damask rose, sandalwood and cinnamon with a nice mandarin and coriander as the opening act.
"Egoiste", was never meant to be extremely attractive on the first spray (back then the mentality was different, the sense of time too)
but it did have the most delightful drydown and a very interesting evolution that I don't find in modern perfumes.
Also, it was never a monster performer (not many male perfumes ever were - female ones were another story back in the '80s), but it was good enough and probably better than the one on the market today.
Having said that, the only thing that I find disturbing is the lack of that wonderful drydown in today's formula.
It is there, but more as a hint and while the perfume still smells quite close to the one I remember, it has less evolution due to that fact (it was also more naturally nuanced).

No, this has nothing to do with original "Coco" I read somewhere. They are both orientals, both amazing perfumes but far from similar.
Also, I find the edt edition of Egoiste (the one most people know) better than both "Bois des Iles" (that's unisex, not "Egoiste"!) and "Bois Noir" that came before it.
Finally, while I do prefer the vintage version (and I still keep two bottles of that somewhere) I wouldn't advise you to go out and pay a huge amount money for this (even if the aroma is preserved well, its longevity will be affected).
The current one is ok enough and its after shave lotion lasts well too (something to keep in mind if you can't afford the edt).

Caldrumr

Sweet and fragrant. Spicy, but more in the way of fragrant spices than spicy spices, if that makes any sense.
A lot of cinnamon and coriander in the opening, and a strong base of aldehydic vanilla throughout, adding moderate sweetness.
Easily unisex, and a very solid fragrance for colder weather.
Refined, laid back and smooth.

ruby_evelyn

It's just a lovely scent which hugs you with warm notes like cozy blanket. I can actually smell how it envolves from top notes to middle and then base notes. The base is bit sweet for me, therefore cannot imagine to smell it on man, lol. The leather and tobacco make it little masculine, and seductive. Nice choice for cold days or nights in a club. Love it!

Starlightus

I got a bottle of it for Christmas. It's a nice cinnamon woody fragrance and it really does smell like Christmas.

indigo

I got my bottle of Egoiste on clearance in a House of Fraser store about 2 years ago, I’m female & bought it blind because it was a bargain & I’d heard it was similar to Bois des Iles. I wore it properly for the first time yesterday, & I love it !

The review below mine by Jae has nailed Egoiste for me perfectly. The only thing I’d add is that when the clovey carnation peeps through in the mid notes I notice a lovely “clean” nuance amongst all the warmth & richness. This is like a cross between more subdued Santal Majuscule & Samsara. It’s softer than both all round, but still distinctive with a lot of presence.

This is perfect unisex imho. My son desperately wants my bottle, but I’m not prepared to hand it over to him! 😀 So, I’m gonna try & get him one for Christmas. I have quite a lot of perfumes, & not much thrills me now..but this does.
