The Best Citrusy Fragrances As An Olfactory Dose Of Vitamin C

A glass of freshly squeezed citrus is perfect for the start of the day, freshening the body. A good dose of Vitamin C is necessary to boost our immunity, as well as express a good mood. Citrus fruits are truly a blessing in nature, and they are at our fingertips every day, healing the body, spirit, and optimism. Nothing is more beautiful than the fresh fruit and the colors of their pulp, the squeezed juice and the aroma that exudes happiness and health.

In addition to the benefits to the body when brought in as fresh, their importance in culinary and industrial sectors is invaluable. The smell of neroli (bitter orange blossom oil) is claimed to be one of the best antidepressants, and to me, almost all citruses that are leading in compositions have this effect. Citrus fruits require an abundance of sun and water for their development, which also does good for our body, and with their scent and taste, they have a positive effect on our energy and emotions just like a sunny day. The nuances of their fruits are also irresistible — the colors warm, vibrant, and full of serenity.

The citrus peel is also a masterpiece of nature. Depending on varieties, they are quite different, from smooth and thin to coarse and robust, overflowing with green and yellow shades. In the perfume industry, citrus fruits are overwhelmingly represented. As much as many of my new perfume creations entice me, I really can't resist citruses, and I notice that I use them more than any other type of fragrance.

I love the variations and types of citrus, from the harsh green, bitter, sunny, sweet, natural and authentically interpreted. I love their leaves, I love their beautiful flowers, the smells of fruits, juices, and their rendered zest.

Lemon, orange, grapefruit, mandarin orange, clementine, lime, bergamot,, kumquat, yuzu, pomelo and many other varieties created by merging and crossing the basic are also a challenge for perfumers who use them in a large number of compositions to tint and illuminate other chords.

It is a true skill to compose a credible citrus scent and make it elegant, sophisticated, and different from others on the market, especially today when those on offer is more than rich.

The perfume industry and numerous citrus-inspired houses allow us to explore the creations and variations of which there are many. For me, citrus scents have a stimulating effect, like a dose of health in a bottle. The elixir of happiness! Their scent leaves a smile on my face.

An olfactory dose of Vitamin C is just like a glass of juice and has a significant impact on us, playing an extremely important role in the perfume world. I've been striving for the best in researching them for years.

ATELIER COLOGNE
ORANGE SANGUINE

Authentic blood orange juice. It is as if the juice has just drained from the fruit and overflows your skin. Infinitely optimistic, the smell of happiness, full-blooded, lush and juicy. Its composition is based on a blend of citrus (blood and bitter orange) tinged with the pungent and greenish aromas of geranium. A scent that describes an idyllic, fulfilling life and an abundance of oranges in all their beauty.

Citruses: blood orange, bitter orange

PERRIS MONTE CARLO
MANDARINO DI SICILIA

One of the newer creations full of emotions. Mandarino di Sicilia is a special scent in many ways. This is the first creation of Perris Monte Carlo Collection owner, Gian-Luca Perris and, for me, the most beautiful in the Italian Citrus Collection offered in 2018, which has four great creations so far. The scent of mandarin orange is so sophisticated and sweet, tinged with green citruses and leaves — dazzling, airy, and solar. The sweetness of the mandarin is not aggressive; the smell pervades the cool morning air, the glittering drops of dew that are still dominated by the juicy and freshly harvested fruits. A true escape to Sicily — sunny and fragrant.

Citruses: green mandarin, bitter orange, petitgrain

THE MERCHANT OF VENICE
MANDARIN CARNIVAL

I love Italy and their citrus fruits. We remain in Sicily, which inspires the Venetian luxury house The Merchant of Venice and offers its own version of Sicilian mandarin fragrance with the rich juice of Mandarin Carnival. The Sicilian turquoise sea combined with the intense aromas of ripe fruit is credibly conveyed by design and composition. The citrus carnival is full of juicy and sweet mandarins reminiscent of Orange Sanguine in the sense of a credible interpretation of citrus juice in a different tone and type, however. The tangerine here is fresh, cheerful, and sweet; the juice is filled with emotion and endlessly cheerful, on the border of sticky and honeyed. Intense and long-lasting, the essence of a good mood.

Citruses: Sicilian mandarin

GUERLAIN
AQUA ALLEGORIA PAMPLELUNE

Refreshing, sparkling, bitter with a nice dose of citrus leaves that gives a greener hue to the scent. Extremely durable on my skin with a great aura that invigorates the spirit. I usually wear it during the winter in the snow because it develops perfectly (even better than on hot summer days) and gives a special dose of radiance at low temperatures. For me, the best Allegoria among Guerlain's offerings.

Citruses: grapefruit, bergamot

CHANEL
PARIS DEAUVILLE

I thought the love wouldn't happen, and then a hot summer on the mountain revealed its greenish, slightly masculine and herbal character developed at its best. It's like the fragrance boosted its aura among the fragrant conifers, and the fresher air helped the fragrance to show more beauty than in the summer city bustle. For this Chanel I would say that it offers a combination of lemon, bergamot, and grapefruit, balanced to make no variety feel like the leader, but perfectly blended with herbal aromas that give off greenish shades. It is the most intense among the Chanel Eaux line and the longest lasting on the skin.

Citruses: lime, Sicilian orange, bergamot, lemon, petitgrain

4711
ACQUA COLONIA LIME NUTMEG

Simple and beloved just for its simplicity. I have bought it several times, and I carry it very often at fairs where I want to concentrate on new creations and again to lift my mood with its freshness and fine balance with nutmeg. The lime here is leading, creamy and juicy, sweet and fresh while giving spicy aromas; slightly masculine, but without aggression, simple but beautiful. The 4711 scents don't last long (3-5 hours), but just enough to wake you up, refresh you or get you back on your feet, creating a fine aura when you don't want the scent you carry to dominate the room and your senses.

Citruses: lime

MOSCHINO
CHEAP AND CHIC I LOVE LOVE

An abundance of fresh citruses as an invigorating cocktail decorated with succulent iced red currants with a smooth, musky cloud to accompany and surround you. A dreamy, youthful, vibrant, and exhilarating scent, it has been one of my favorites for many years. Many people compare it with Light Blue, which is not the case for me, as they evolve differently on my skin, I Love Love offers juicy tangerines and is more sophisticated. Although the composition offers oranges, grapefruit, and lemon in this scent, I can smell the tangerines that go perfectly with the currants, creating a juicy and sparkling citrus dominance that sparkles like prosecco.

Citruses: orange, grapefruit, lemon

L'OCCITANE
FEU D'ORANGE INTENSE

I always talk with a little bit of sadness about scents that are gone and whose production is discontinued. For some of the fragrances of the L'Occitane di Provence collection, I think that they are top creations that, unfortunately, have disappeared from the stores and their offers and can compete in excellence, uniqueness, and quality even now with all the new creations. Ruban di Orange as the wonderful juicy orange and Feu d'Orange with its pungent and intense blood orange combined with vetiver are some the few I love from L'Occitane "gone with the wind" offer. The fiery creation that dominates the space — pungent, vibrant, combative, and fierce in the aura — subdues "opponents" and makes them turn after you and ask with admiration what you are wearing. Bitter orange, red orange, tangerines, and lemon passionately portray how citrus fruits can conquer united for the elegance of vetiver, guaiac wood, and mysterious incense in the trail.

Citruses: blood orange, sweet orange, tangerine, lemon

GRITTI
POMELO SORRENTO

Another citrus favorite! Pomelo, a special kind of citrus that is not a hybrid and whose origin is from Southeast Asia, where it is a symbol of prosperity and happiness. This is the biggest citrus fruit that has a specific scent, not overly sour like lemon, nor overly sparkling as grapefruit, nor as sweet as tangerines and oranges. Pomelo Sorrento is just that, a balanced citrus that brightens its aura with freshness and creaminess, and radiates positivity and authenticity with its pulpy smell. The fragrance exudes finesse and sophistication, slightly sunny and shiny, slightly sweet and gently sparkling. The beauty of the flacon rounds out this creation perfectly.

Citruses: pomelo, grapefruit

XERJOFF
1861 RENAISSANCE

A fave lemon ever! Sliced, fresh, vibrant, glittering, bathed in sunlight and slightly sweetened. With plenty of freshly cut peel. You know the feeling when you drink lemonade and at the bottom of the glass is the dense and syrupy juice with grains of sugar, so in this scent, citrus is a leader with a touch of delicate sugar hue and an abundance of green herbal freshness. The juicy opening reminds me of the smell of limoncello, absorbed by the syrupy sweetness. One of my favorite citrus scents where lemon takes the main word, followed by the fine sweetness of tangerine and the bitterness of bergamot. Its durability is fantastic on the skin as well as its radiance, its nuance of herbal notes, crisp greens, icy, aromatic mint and white, bell-shaped, lemon-green lily-of-the-valley. Musk builds great support for the citruses by lifting it up on a pedestal, leaving a soft, barely warm, subtle mixture of wood beneath.

Citruses: lemon, tangerine, bergamot, petitgrain

CHOPARD
HAPPY CHOPARD BIGARADIA

Standing out from the Happy Chopard collection is the fragrance Bigaradia, a perfume by Dora Baghriche who truly celebrated the beauty of citrus with this creation. It is a combination of citrus flowers and fruits (green mandarins, bitter oranges, neroli, and orange blossom) where white petals are practically soaked into citrus juices. Glossy and sweet, extremely juicy and cheerful — a real sunny citrus, harmoniously bitter, and really happy as the name says.

Citruses: green mandarin, bitter orange

BOND NO 9
LITTLE ITALY

One of the most beautiful Bond No 9 fragrances and among the most beautiful mandarin and sweet clementine mixes on the market. In addition to the bright, thick orange juice, the scent is also nuanced by the sparkling orange blossoms and fizzy grapefruit that lifts the juicy orange pulp, creating a real burst on the skin. Intense, long-lasting, and optimistic, it is full of serenity and sunshine. The color of the bottle perfectly describes its essence.

Citruses: clementine, mandarin orange, grapefruit

I was captured at an early age - during the 70s - by a whole host of inexpensive drugstore citruses. Love's Fresh Lemon 375x500.13104.jpg Dana Love's Lemon Scent , Jean Nate 375x500.9025.jpg Revlon Jean Nate , which I wore using the bubble bath, the soap, the powder, and the body splash, and a miraculously delicious fragrance called Celebrate or Celebration , which I acquired around Christmas time, and, as you stated in the above article, was even more delicious in the winter, somehow. I really sometimes long for the soliflores, citruses, and delicious essential oils available in the 70s. I love a complicated, exquisite fragrance, don't get me wrong - my idea of perfection is the OG Opium, OG Obsession, Cinnabar, etc., but there are scents from the 70s that I cannot ever forget. And among them are those delightful citrus fragrances. Even shampoo that was lemon scented and made one's hair smell fresh for the next 24 hours. Good times.

The other day I found a sample of Mugler Angel Eau Croisiere that I’d forgotten I had. While not a true citrus scent, it has a great burst of grapefruit that comes on strong and sticks around. Like grapefruit replacing the blackberry note of the original. So for those wanting an “edgier” citrus-y scent, I recommend it.

L'Eau d'Issey pour Homme Yuzu : citrus heaven and a masterpiece imo! It instantly went into my favourites, reminds me of a more citrus, less floral version of the original pour homme with a slight nod to Dior's masterful original Homme Sport (2008), but lighter. The Yuzu and citron (cedrat) here is to die for, gorgeous and uplifting. Long-lasting too for a fresh fragrance. Mr Miyake should bring this back and make it a regular fixture, especially seeing as Dior dismantled their brilliant original DHS, not once but twice.

Another superb citrus is Eau de Rochas pour Homme, the multi-citrus opening is so intense (maybe too much for some), sadly it subdues rather quickly but it's easily found at discounters, just top up with a travel sprayer.

For lemon, I love Profumum Roma Acqua Viva and Erbario Toscano Primavera Toscana/Tuscan Spring. I bought Primavera Toscana in Tuscany. It was so uplifting and great for those hot muggy weather there. It smells very natural and does not have metal scent in the drydown like a lot of other citrus perfumes. L'Occitane's Lemon Verbena is another good one.

Ellen Tracy Bronze is a lemony love and after reading this article I am going to have to wear it tomorrow.
I like layering it over Avalon Organics Lemon lotion and I used to love L'Occitane's Lemon Verbena in the lotion as well.
I love citrusy fragrances. Orange, lime, lemon...
I always thought Fresh Sugar, which I wore extensively well over a dozen years ago, had a lemony thing going. Back then it came in the little squat frosted bottles with the screw top atomizers which I repurposed for decanting Jean Nate body splash. Brilliant!
Then they came out with Lemon Sugar version and I never wore that one. Sugar was better and more natural.
Crown Perfumery Esterhazy is like lemon candies.

@smellagent, I agree, as Arancia di Sicilia by Perris is more than honorable mentions for me but I choose their Mandarino di Sicilia as my true fave from the Italian line, I wear it a lot and makes me really happy and fulfilled when I smell it. Same thing is with Orange Sanguine. The juice is adorable, it reflect the true soul of blood oranges. Don`t take my honorable mentions part as something less worth than the ones I write about, I sorted what I wear and love the most from the citrusy offer in last couple of years.

I also enjoy to see what people choose as their favorites, especially in citrus group.

Citrus is one of my favorite categories of perfumes, and I credit Atelier's "Orange Sanguine" with introducing me to the concept that a perfume could truly be different from the floral / "powdery" ones I'd grown up with (that were favored by my mom and... most women I knew, actually). I just wish OS lasted longer than 2 hours on my skin. :-(

My standby for sweltering hot weather is Clean's "Acqua Neroli." It's not a sweet citrus, but neither is it "dryer sheets." It's the perfume that clued me in to the fact that I love neroli, and even though it sticks close to the skin it also stays for, like, 12 hours (no joke). It's the perfect companion for summer, especially on those days where you feel like you're sitting on Hell's Front Porch.

For a more gourmand citrus kick, I recommend Ganache Parfum's "Silver Couture." I'd worried that it was discontinued, but I checked the website and it's back! Anyway, it's like a Creamsicle, or Orange Julius, with an undercurrent of black pepper.

Among those mentioned by Sandrina, my vote goes to the good old Moschino I Love Love - the most realistic grapefruit ever. On the other hand, I found Bond Little Italy to be completely intolerable.

I LOVE citrus perfumes. I wear them year round. Though usually sought after during the summer, nothing beats a cloud of sun drenched citrus cologne on a gloomy, gray winter day........Eau Sauvage and Chanel pour Monsieur are terrific, classic citrus fragrances, along with Eau de Fleurs de Cedrat and Eau de Guerlain. Whip (Le Galion) is a personal favorite, as well as Azemour les Orangers (Parfum d’ Empire). I also love Hermes’ Eau de Néroli Doré, Eau d’Orange Verte and Mandarine Ambrée. Oh, and Serge Lutens’ Mandarin Mandarine.......oh, and Sisley Eau de Campagne..........oh, and Cedrat Intense (De Nicolai) and............

- big sigh-

I LOVE citrus perfumes!

I'd like to add Sonia Kashuk Yellow Alluriana to this list. Possibly the best and most long lasting grapefruit I've ever encountered.

I am also taking the notes ;) Vuitton Afternoon Swim is from now on my test list, tnx! Little Italy I want to have once again. About Mancera yes, they are both good, but Lemon Line is too earthy on my skin and Sicily, which I really like reveals exotic fruity aromas from pineapple, peach, ylang and white flowery more dominant then citrusy, but this is just my impressions and my skin.

Great article! Will have to try some of those out. One of my favorite citruses is the lovely Bvlgari Mon Jasmin Noir L'Eau Exquise.

My faves are Aerin Mediterranean Honeysuckle, Chanel Chance Eau Tendre, Acqua di Parma Magnolia Nobile, Claiborne Vivid.

And from the Vintage lines—the way they were formulated in the 70s, Love’s Fresh Lemon and Village Bath Lemon.

Thank you for this nice article. I love zesty, happy citruses especially lemon. Some of my favorite fragrances C.O. Bigelow Lemon no 1999. I hope they will bring it back. Also, Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Teazurra, Carven L'Eau de toilette, Jil Sander Style Pastels Soft Yellow and Avon Scent Essences Sparkly Citrus.

Chanel Pour Monsieur, Dior Eau Sauvage and Hermes Eau d'Orange Verte and Concentre d'Orange Verte have to be on the list. But the greatest is Acqua di Parma Colonia.

So many wonderful smells, Thank you Sandra for a great article. Citrus Aromatics are my favorite group. I'm not even going to try to list all my favorites (you did hit a few of them) but to mention just a few: Oranges and Lemons by James Heely, Esperidi Water Merchant of Venice, Mediterranean Honeysuckle Aerin Lauder, Escale a Portofino Christian Dior, Double Fraîcheur Molinard, Royal Water Creed, and all of the Guerlain Eaux!
