Defiant, the fourth and final volume of the series that started with Skyward in 2018, comes out in November 2023, capping an already book-filled year that will see the releases of all four Secret Projects: Tress of the Emerald Sea, The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval England, Yumi and the Nightmare Painter, and Secret Project Four (with its official title reveal coming October 2023). These four books were all initially offered to backers of the #1 Kickstarter campaign of all time.
November 2022 saw the release of The Lost Metal, the seventh volume in the Mistborn saga, and the final volume of the Mistborn Era Two featuring Wax & Wayne. The third era of Mistborn is slated to be written after the first arc of the Stormlight Archive wraps up.
In November 2020 we saw the release of Rhythm of War—the fourth massive book in the New York Times #1 bestselling Stormlight Archive series that began with The Way of Kings—and Dawnshard (book 3.5), a novella set in the same world that bridges the gaps between the main releases. This series is my love letter to the epic fantasy genre, and it’s the type of story I always dreamed epic fantasy could be. The fifth volume, Wind and Truth, is set for release in fall 2024.
Most readers have noticed that my adult fantasy novels are in a connected universe called the Cosmere. This includes The Stormlight Archive, both Mistborn series, Elantris, Warbreaker, and various novellas available on Amazon, including The Emperor’s Soul, which won a Hugo Award in 2013. In November 2016 all of the existing Cosmere short fiction was released in one volume called Arcanum Unbounded. If you’ve read all of my adult fantasy novels and want to see some behind-the-scenes information, that collection is a must-read.
I also have three YA series: The Rithmatist (currently at one book), The Reckoners (a trilogy beginning with Steelheart), and Skyward. For young readers I also have my humorous series Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians, which had its final book, Bastille vs. the Evil Librarians, come out in 2022. Many of my adult readers enjoy all of those books as well, and many of my YA readers enjoy my adult books, usually starting with Mistborn.
Additionally, I have a few other novellas that are more on the thriller/sci-fi side. These include the Legion series, as well as Perfect State and Snapshot. There’s a lot of material to go around!
Good starting places are Mistborn (a.k.a. The Final Empire), Skyward, Steelheart,The Emperor’s Soul, and Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians. If you’re already a fan of big fat fantasies, you can jump right into The Way of Kings.

A good continuation of the series, just as strong as the first two. The book brings in new elements to keep things fresh, while staying close enough to the original elements so that it remains familiar and satisfying.
One of the elements I enjoy about these books is the active-narrator-telling-you-a-story thing. There's a lot of discussion about what makes a story, and what the author is doing in order to manipulate the reader. Obviously that's close to my heart, as I do the same thing in my books.
However, it wasn't until I was listening to this third book in the series that I began to wonder? Is Sanderson having a bit of a go at me? In my books, Kvothe is telling you the true story of his life, the story that the legends come from. That's what's happening in this book too.
There's obvious satire in the book. I enjoy that as much as the next guy. Sanderson knows the Fantasy Genre inside and out, and he's obviously poking some loving fun at it with these books. It just never occurred to me that some of that loving fun might be specific to my books, rather than just generally directed at the genre.
Either way, I'm still digging the series. And if there are a few NOTW specific jabs in here, I'm flattered.

A buddy read with the addicted to Brandon Sanderson's genius and humor!!! We are all 13 year old when we read this series:):):)
".....Unfortunately, I know that some of you Hushlanders have trouble counting to three. (The Librarian-controlled schools don't want you to be able to manage complex mathematics.)
This obvious explanation of our terrible mathematical abilities is the reason I had to re-check several times to make sure I was reading the right book in order... I had already gone through the first two, also in order i might add, and was psyched to read the next one in line. Book 3 did not disappoint. No, it was not very different nor did Alcatraz grow with 15 years in a month the way they like to do with the soap-opera newborns - they don't have dramatic use beyond someone trying to steel them or prove that the supposed mother is not the biological parent... Once they hit toddler's age, they are soap=opera dead zone, so they grow into upper teens in a week... But no, Alcatraz has chosen, for some very inexplicable reason, to go through the most awkward time of teenage development and is sticking with the age of 13. And he has a crush! It is adorable! It took him a while to understand what was happening, but at one point he was mercilessly given an unprovoked hug by the object of his affections, and everything became complicated between them... Mostly, Alcatraz finds himself not knowing what to say and sticking his foot in his mouth in peculiar circumstances... Sad, realy... It could have been avoided if he had grown himself even with only 5 years. By then, he would have known exactly how to be cool in front of hot, be it sword wielding, girls:):):)

Girls, might I make a suggestion at this point? Don't go around hugging people without warning. To many of us (a number somewhere near half), this is akin to pouring an entire bottle of seventeen-alarm hot sauce in our mouths.
I believe that at this point in the story, I made several very interesting and incoherent noises, followed – perhaps – by a blank expression and then some numb-faced drooling. Someone was talking. ". . . I cannot interfere with the rules of Crystallia, Bastille."
I fuzzed back into consciousness. Bastille had released me from her unprovoked, unregistered hug and moved on to speak with her father. ...
Tell me this isn't adorable!!!
.... ".....I braced myself for another hug (known in the industry as a "teenage boy forced reboot") but she just stood there, then cursed under her breath and hurried out after her mother. I was left trying to figure out just when things between us had grown so awkward.
(I was tempted to think back on all the good times we had spent together. Bastille smacking me in the face with her handbag. Bastille kicking me in the chest. Bastille making fun of something dumb I'd said. I would probably have a good case for abuse if I hadn't also (1) broken her sword, (2) kicked her first, and (3) been so awesome.)..."
Honestly, if I want to include all the wonderful quotes from this book, I will have to just add the whole of it to the review... It is full of humorous, sad, and very tender moments and I think every person who loves to read for the pleasure of reading would not be sorry if they spend some time reading those short, but full of gems books!!!
So, Grandfather is the greatest, some librarians can be good, Al's mother might actually care for him, literary critics could be good people, despite their ugly dancing, and Al's father is a jerk! At least he is for now, unless he has some agenda and has to hide his feelings from his son... I am hoping for the latter, since otherwise he would be the worst father EVER! (I might be exaggerating slightly, but he realy bugs me with how he is treating Alcatraz! )
.... "I'm no poet. Anytime I try to write poetry, it comes out as insults. I probably should have been a rapper, or at least a politician. Regardless, I sometimes find it hard to express beauty through words...."
Yeaaa, I am not good at the expressing with words thing, but I am sooooooo glad Brandon Sanderson IS!!! You guys have to read it! This is how the author describes his own work, kind of....:
.... "...."They're fun, Mother," he said. "Meaningless, really, but as a diversion I give the genre three out of four marks. This one here was terrible, though. It had all the elements of a great story – a mystical weapon, a boy on a journey, quirky sidekicks. But it ended up ruining itself by trying to say something important, rather than just being amusing."...
I wish all of you Happy Reading and a lot of laughter!!!!

Alcatraz is still breaking things!
Alcatraz, Bastille and his grandfather travel to the Free Kingdoms and the city of Nalhalla, the Smedry homeland only to find the counsel of kings is about to sign a treaty with the Evil Librarians. Bad idea!
As with the other books in the series, there is narration by the author throughout. Most of it funny. The book is a quick read and intended for younger readers. It is entertaining and fun to read. If you are a parent and read books with your kids, this is a great choice. Do parents read bedtime stories with their kids anymore?

3.5 - I don't have much to say about this one except that I'm starting to believe Alcatraz when he claims he's not a hero.

Cosmere.
What? You haven’t heard of him? I don’t care who you are or what you’ve read. If you have not yet read Brandon Sanderson’s books, then you have not yet discovered what fantasy can be. But fear not! I say it again, fear not! For your ignorance can be amended. Whether you are a fantasy veteran or a fantasy noob, today... today, you find yourselves equals.
For you are all equally blessed. For I have the pride, the privilege, nay, the pleasure of introducing to you to a storyteller, like no other storytellers. A writer who has given us some of the most mindblowing fantasy for just over a decade now. I first met him in the mists of Scadrial, asking us to enter a world where the Dark Lord had won, giving us an impossible fight, and unforgettable heroes. Next, he amazed me still further on Sel, when the Moon Sceptor was stolen by a worldhopper and a young thief attempted the unimaginable task of forging a soul. In the Stormlight Archives, he spent the better part of 2000 pages redefining our very understanding of the word epic and boggled us with the sheer scope of his imagination. July 2022: Reread for the release of book 6.
One thing that I'm constantly amazed about these books. No matter how ridiculous some of these "talents" could sound, the way it was utilised in the story was incredibly clever.

This book means whatever you make of it. For some it will be about the dangers of fame. For others it will be about turning your flaws into talents. For many it will simply be entertainment, which is quite all right. Yet for others it will be about learning to question everything, even that which you believe. For, you see, the most important truths can always withstand a little examination.
This book even wrote its own review.

I can't get enough of this series. It's so freaking good. This is the perfect series to read if you're looking for something lighthearted and funny. Sanderson is a Genius *coughs* I know, I know, I say that a lot, but it true.

The best in the series so far!
There's nothing I love when a series gets better with each book, and this series is doing just that.
If I'm being honest, I was a bit disappointed with book 1, then I read book two, and it was good; come book 3, it was awesome. I didn't expect the series to get this better or for me to love it.
The setting of this book took place in Nalhalla, the country of the free kingdomers. Nalhalla is a mix of fantasy and historical fiction, the citizens wear tunics and Victorian-style dresses, and the houses and buildings are something out of the past.
They use magical objects but call it science which is funny but cool. I love the depiction of Nalhalla, the cities, the people's way of life, and everything that was very well written.
The events in this book took place shortly after Scrivener's Bones with no time jump.
Alcatraz is astonished to discover that Grandpa Smedry is a legend when the two of them travel to Crystallia, the Smedry family's base of operations in the Free Kingdom. Alcatraz realised that he was, in fact, a celebrity because the Smedrys are nobles and the fact that he grew up in the Hushlands.
The librarians are up to something, and Bastille has been stripped of her armour, but will Alcatraz find out on time, or will he let his new fame get in his way?
The best in the series so far!
There's nothing I love when a series gets better with each book, and this series is doing just that.
If I'm being honest, I was a bit disappointed with book 1, then I read book two, and it was good; come book 3, it was awesome. I didn't expect the series to get this better or for me to love it.
The setting of this book took place in Nalhalla, the country of the free kingdomers. Nalhalla is a mix of fantasy and historical fiction, the citizens wear tunics and Victorian-style dresses, and the houses and buildings are something out of the past.
They use magical objects but call it science which is funny but cool. I love the depiction of Nalhalla, the cities, the people's way of life, and everything that was very well written.
The events in this book took place shortly after Scrivener's Bones with no time jump.
Alcatraz is astonished to discover that Grandpa Smedry is a legend when the two of them travel to Crystallia, the Smedry family's base of operations in the Free Kingdom. Alcatraz realised that he was, in fact, a celebrity because the Smedrys are nobles and the fact that he grew up in the Hushlands.
The librarians are up to something, and Bastille has been stripped of her armour, but will Alcatraz find out on time, or will he let his new fame get in his way?

The Knights of Crystallia is the third installment of the Alcatraz series by Brandon Sanderson. For those who don’t understand what a series actually means and where you should start reading it, Alcatraz Smedry is nice enough to help explain all this as the book begins.
I know that some of you Hushlanders have trouble counting to three. (The Librarian-controlled schools don’t want you to be able to manage complex mathematics.) So I’ve prepared this helpful guide.
Definition of “book one”: The best place to start a series. You can identify “book one” by the fact that it says BOOK ONE on the back cover. Smedrys do a happy dance when you read book one first. Entropy shakes its angry fist at you for being clever enough to organize the world.
Definition of “book two”: The book you should read after book one. If you start with book two, I will make fun of you. (Okay, so I’ll make fun of you either way. But honestly, do you want to give me more ammunition?)
Definition of “book three”: The worst place, currently, to start a series. If you start here, I will throw things at you.
Definition of “book four”: And . . . how’d you manage to start with that one? I haven’t even written it yet. (You sneaky time travelers.)
And that, my friends, is a sample of the trademark tongue-in-cheek silliness of this addictive middle-grade series. A tale which has followed young Alcatraz from unhappy foster child to son of the famous Smedry family of the Free Kingdoms. His Grandpa Smedry having whisked our young hero away from the boring Hushlands (The real world where you and I live) to enter the adventure filled world where the Free Kingdoms wage a constant struggle to keep the Earth free of Evil Librarian control. Magic, oculatory lenses, knights, and even more wondrous (and awful) things revealing themselves to our young hero.
But Alcatraz isn’t really a hero. At least, he doesn’t believe it. Instead, he describes himself as “a liar, a sadist, and a terrible person.” But since his fans (because Alcatraz has A LOT of them both in the Hushlands and the Free Kingdoms) believe he is, he has “come to the conclusion that the only way to convince you readers that I’m a terrible person is to show you how arrogant and self-centered I am. I’ll do this by talking about my virtues. Incessantly. All the time. Until you’re completely sick of hearing about my superiority.”
Not that Alcatraz really does that. Instead, The Knights of Crystallia shows our young Smedry getting his first taste of the Free Kingdoms, discovering what it really means to be a “Smedry”, learning he is as famous as Elvis ever dreamed of being, dealing with his friend Bastille’s trial, and attempting to stop a peace proposal by the Evil Librarians, which would hand over the Kingdom of Mokia to them!
There really is a lot of cool stuff to love in this book, but it all depends on whether you dig Brandon Sanderson’s humor. I mean, Alcatraz’s self-depreciating silliness and quirky observations aren’t for everyone, and I’ve encountered people who are turned off by it as well as the middle-grade story style. Myself and my son really dig it however. And since I have a college degree and am a recognized expert in book reviewing, you should just accept my opinion already and go buy the book. (Read the novel, and you will get the joke I’m telling in that last sentence.)
But, anyway, The Knights of Crystallia delivers everything a great MG (Is that even the correct acronym for middle-grade? Shrug.) story needs. Adventure. Laughs. Magic. Cool, awkward teenagers. And even some words of wisdom here or there. (“Fame is like a cheeseburger. It might not be the best or most healthy thing to have, but it will still fill you up . . . It isn’t until years later you realize what it has done to your heart.") So give this series a try (Alcatraz prefers you begin with book one remember?) or give it as a gift to a cool MG-er who likes awesome, magical adventures.

I was a bit disappointed in this one. The pace was a lot slower and the action almost none existing.
The interruptions in the beginning of each chapter was just plain annoying, and it didn't help the pace of the book.
I think I'm taking a break form this series for now - will get back to it later in the year.

این جلد هم تمام شد و هرچی بیشتر جلو میرفت بیشتر میفهمیدم که من جدا بستیل دوست دارم اصلا عاشق این بی اعصابیشم🤭
و خیلی هم بابابزرگ دوست دارم شخصیتش عالیه(مدیونید فکرکنین چشمم دنبال بدست اوردن استعدادشه🤭)
و خود الکاتراز... خوب خودش به خوبی تو این جلد تونست نشون بده که چقدر میتونه رو مخ و احمق باشه! یه جاهایی به بستیل حق میدادم که از دستش حرص بخوره(دلم میخواست باز با کیف بزنه تو سرش🚶🏻♀️)
یه چیزی که توی این جلد برام جالب بود اینکه به کل ماجرا شک میکنی! کی خوبه؟ کی شرور؟ جدا با کی دارن مبارزه میکنن؟ الان عملا داستان تو نقطه ای هست که به هیشکی نمیشه اعتماد کرد(بجز بستیل و بابا بزرگ){میزان علاقم بهشون که ضایع نیست؟🤭}
فردا میرم سراغ جلد چهار و جوری که داستان داره پیش میره احساس میکنم دیگه کم کم باید خودمو برا یه اعصاب خوردی حسابی اماده کنم👀

4 Estrellas. De nuevo una entrega tan divertida y entretenida como las anteriores. En éste caso Sanderson va mas allá y nos trae un libro deliciosamente disparatado, y con el tono irónico que solo él sabe darle al personaje de Alcatraz.
En éste tercer libro la acción se traslada a las Tierras Liberadas, a Nalhalla, ciudad de origen de la familia Smedry. Algo está ocurriendo en la ciudad. El rey Dartmoor va a firmar un tratado que podría poner fin a la guerra que llevan siglos manteniendo contra los Bibliotecarios Malvados, para desgracia del país de Mokia, pues las Tierras Silenciadas se quedarían con él.
El problema empieza cuando la ciudad empieza a llenarse misteriosamente de Bibliotecarios, y sí, una de ellos es la madre de Alcatraz, que según nuestro protagonista, no planeará nada bueno.
Como en anteriores libros, tenemos una historia divertida, muy del estilo de los primeros libros. En éste volumen por fin viajamos a las Tierras Liberadas, y conoceremos al resto de la familia Smedry y sus increíbles Talentos.
Me he quedado con ganas de saber qué ocurrirá con el libro de Alcatraz I, y si la relación de Alcatraz con su padre puede llegar a ser algo mas, pero de momento me conformo con el crack del abuelo Smedry. Estoy deseando hincarle el diente al cuarto libro de la serie para desvelar las incógnitas que éste nos ha dejado.

[5 Stars] I think the other two books in this series were my personal favorites and this one wasn't quite as good as the others. May be this is more of a 4.5 star book, but regardless this series is gearing up to be one of my favorite middle grade series ever! I adore Alcatraz, his grandfather, Bastille, and Folsom and Himalaya in this book in particular. This series make me giggle so much, and I admit I'll be slightly sad when I finish the next one and don't have Alcatraz books to read for a while. Sad day.

In Book 3, we get to see life in the Free Kingdoms. There are interesting new characters,
The plot is smart, clever, and suspenseful. The writing continues to be funny; I'm still laughing over a few passages. There's a hint of a darker tone with Alcatraz annoyed at both his parents and giving in to selfishness at times.

This is the 3rd book in the Alcatraz series.
When Alcatraz and Grandpa Smedry make a pilgrimage to the Free Kingdom city of Crystallia, the Smedry home base, Alcatraz is shocked to see that he is, in fact, a legend. When he was a baby he was stolen by the Evil Librarians, and his mother, a Librarian herself, was behind the whole scheme. Now, with his estranged father, who is acting indeed strange, Bastille, who has been stripped of her armor, and Grandpa Smedry, who is, as always, late to everything (that's his Talent), Alcatraz tries to save a city under siege. From who? Why, the Librarians of course!

Attica Smedry is here... yeah... not quite the father Alcatraz was looking for. He really doesn't seem to care about his son, not at all! But we get to see more of his mother... and her plans...
I really, really love this series. It makes you think ouside the box and look at things from another perspective.
Also there are a lot of great characters! The Smedrys are so extraordinary and eccentric, it's great :)
It just a great story about adventures, finding the place where you fit in and of course saving the world(or at least some Free Kingdoms!)
And be honest: don't we all want our weaknesses to turn out to be hidden superpowers? :)
What we also get: Talking Dragons(yep, Dragons), Alcatraz' intro song, a real sword fight (with big cristall swords), cookies from an old, old lady you shouldn't eat, a marriage :) a lot more People named after mountains and prisons :) and of course explosions, an angry Bastille and many broken things :)

"Bir zamanlar Alcatraz diye bir çocuk varmış. Birtakım ilginç şeyler yapmış. Derken bir gün, kendisine güvenenlere ihanet etmiş, dünyayı felakete sürüklemiş ve kendisini seven birini öldürmüş.

Tamam, bu sefer söz yorumu biraz kısa tutacağım.
Yalan yok, ilk iki kitap boyunca sürekli Suskun Diyarlarda takılıyor olmamız ve Özgür Krallıklar'ı hiç göremeyişimiz biraz canımı sıkmaya başlamıştı. Smedry ailesinin kalanını, Kütüphanecilerin düzenli sıkıcılığına bulaşmamış insanları, onların yaşadığı yerleri, silimatik teknolojinin ve Smedry yeteneklerinin doğduğu toprakları görmek istiyordum çünkü Suskun Diyarlara kıyasla, hem daha eğlenceli hem de daha mistik bir olacağını düşünüyordum. Gözümde canlanan arnavut kaldırımlı sokakları, eğlenceli insanları ve taş binaları ile Özgür Krallıklar bana inanılmaz çekici bir yer gibi geliyordu. Dolayısıyla da bu kitapta oraya gidebildiğimiz ve bütün kitabı da orada geçirdiğimiz için çok mutluyum.
Beklentimi karşıladı mı? Tam olarak değil ama ona sonra geleceğim. Önce ilk iki kitapta tanıdığımız ve karakter gelişimlerini güncellemem gereken bizimkiler, sonra da helikopter yöntemiyle tokatlamam gereken bir Attica Smedry var.
Alcatraz ikinci kitabın başından itibaren aile kavramını daha da benimsemiş, etrafındakilere değer veren ve onlar için çabalayan bir insana dönüşmüştü ve bu gelişimini üçüncü kitap boyunca da devam ettirdi. Doğduğu topraklara geldiğinde tekrar bir görevin içerisine düşmüş, daha önce hiç görmediği Özgür Krallıklar'ın Kütüphanecilerden korunabilmesi, yanlış bir karar sonucu Kütüphanecilerin yalanlarla doldurduklarına inandığı dostluk anlaşmasının imzalanmaması için hem Bastille, Şarkı, yeni tanıdığı kuzeni Folsom ve Özgür Krallıklara sığınan, ajan olmadığını iddia eden bir Kütüphaneci hem de Büyükbaba Smedry ile planlar yapmış, krallar konseyini ikna etmek için çabalayıp durmuşlardı. Folsom ve Himalaya bu kitapta tanıdığımız karakterlerdi ve yine, ilk iki kitapta tanıştığımız yan karakterler gibi benim için arka planda kalmışlardı.
