I smelled this in the store and swore I had liked it. I purchased a full bottle later and I don’t see what I had liked in it then. It smells so similar to the original, I really regret getting it. They’re actually pretty close, this is super sharp and heavy at first. There’s pear coffee a creamy whipped vanilla in the dry down that I wish was a lot stronger and the patchouli is intense. I don’t know if it was reformulated or I got a bad batch, it was way nicer in the store. I still think it’s a bit more complex than the OG, but it’s still 95 percent identical, sharp synthetic and tacky honestly. Don’t know what I was thinking I want my $100 back.

Upahara

Disgusting.
My most despised perfume. Flowerbomb smells exactly like this. Too cloying and obnoxious. Utterly Disgusting. Gave my bottle to my sister and even she hates it.

HannahS

I liked this the first time I tried a sample, but now I get nauseous by the scent and I think it smells quite unpleasant. I liked the cacao scent, but when it dried down it just smells synthetic IMO and not like anything pleasant..

Kendralenses

I don’t understand people saying this doesn’t last long. I sprayed one spray on my wrist and it’s still going strong 6 hours later. It was a bit spicy at first, not super spicy tho. Could smell a little bit of the coffee & cocoa, but overall I think all the notes come through equally for me. The patchouli isn’t very strong or overwhelming imo. The dry down is definitely now more vanilla forward. It smells like I spilled a sweet vanilla latte on my arm. I think I will enjoy this quite a bit once fall rolls back around. I don’t think I’ll have much use for it now and through summer. I could see this being unpleasant in the heat, but very nice once the weather turns cold.

Emang

This is one of those perfumes you have to put your wrist right up to people's noses so they can smell it. No sillage. Comments such as "nice and light". So I feel that marketing this fragrance as Extreme seems very bold/deluded/dishonest 👀

Bronzeroad732*

I can smell Iris in the very dry down and I am wondering why I am the only one.... This flanker is a dream. I like it so much.

anamawsity

Basically identical to the original Black Opium. Both pull way too floral on me. It’s not bad, but I find it a tad too sharp. The vanilla finally starts coming through after a few hours. Black Opium Illicit Green is also quite similar but even less sweet. I can see a lot of people enjoying this, it’s just not for me. I prefer Black Opium Le Parfum as it’s much sweeter and I smell the vanilla more quickly. It has moderate sillage and lasts about 7 hours.

Elyka21

Wow, this is very strong, extreme indeed, the strongest of the whole line, very unisex. I can see a man wearing this easily, in fact, from my perspective, this is more for him than for her. Not an absolute love for me as I like more feminine perfumes.

Not for everyone, not for every season and not a safe blind buy in my opinion. Having said that I actually like the smell very much: in the beginning I sense very strong coffee and cacao, slightly bitter (smells like a bitter sweet tiramisu to me at some point), then the white flowers emerge followed by quite heavy patchouli, leaning masculine. Coffee and such a beautiful realistic cacao remain always there in the background which is so nice as I love both coffee and cacao very much. The more I wear it, the more I love it.

armani6

A creamier coffee version of the original, absolute love!! One of my absolute favourites at the moment!!

addictpiglet

I have a bottle of this I’m willing to trade or sell within the EU. nothing wrong with it, just too gourmand for my taste and too popular for me to enjoy it. It’s 90 ml and still has majority of it left, I can’t really see as the bottle is opaque but I got it this november and used it only a couple times. PM me if you’re interested.

Check out my Black opium Nuit Blanche review back in 2018

I wished for a mocha , a coffee with chocolate notes for their next flanker
Yep my dream came true✨️ this has cocoa notes in it 🍫giving it a milky chocolatey vibe with the main coffee notes still prominent ☕️

kush222

A beautiful and warm scent, but I wish the sillage and lasting power was actually “extreme”… It sits close to the skin and hardly lasts beyond a couple of hours on me. I thought this would be my night out fragrance, but it is turning into more of a cozy snow day reach for me.

teteso39

This was my signature scent before I moved to seasonal scents. It’s deep and dark while still being appropriate for any time of day during any time of the year.

I noticed that Sephora has stopped stocking this one as of late so I recently picked up a backup in the largest size. One of my all time favorites for sure.

Abbaloney

Update:
This is just a patchoulli bomb. Not exactly my favourite. Still gonna stick to the le parfum.

I mean you can enjoy this during the day if you wish. I can definitely smell the roasted coffee beans and the jasmine.. i really like it. Its not as sweet like the le parfum. I think i need to let it sit for a while cos the perfume doesnt sit long on me.
Cant wait to try it in the colder months.. were in summer at where im at currently
It is patchouli strong just warning you

Featherblossom

This is a deeper, bitterer coffee than is present in the OG.

Perfect for autumn and winter.

Unfortunately it doesn't last as long as the OG on me. Then again, my bottle was brand new from a perfume retailer, so I'm going to let it sit for a few months (maybe even a year) and see if it has better longevity by then!

addictpiglet

I bought this despite the heavy criticism that it’s way too popular. It’s true that you smell BO (and its dupes) everywhere, but it is still lovely. When I smelled the original edp all i could think about was how much more interesting this would smell with a blast of coffee. The original smelled way too basic vanilla. The extreme delivered exactly that. It’s much more interesting and sensual. It’s strictly a fall and winter scent. Unsurprisingly it turns sour on skin in the summer heat. I don’t know why anyone would want to wear these notes on a hot summer day though.

I don’t know why majority of votes says moderate longevity. I can easily smell this on me after 24 hours and any shirt worn on a black opium day can only be worn with black opium again until wash day.

Not_a_perfume_junkie

Richer, deeper and more sexy and dare I say mature, than the original.

mrcxry

As a male who wears the original Black Opium occasionally, I love the cocoa note in the Extreme. It changes a lot: because the vanilla and florals are fairly more subdued in this one in favor of the coffee and cocoa notes, the scent profile becomes far more sensual while retaining the elegance of the original. This is more unisex than the original, and I'd love to see more guys dare wearing it. Avoid it in the heat though; the original can pass, but this is definitely suffocating in hotter weathers.

D0LLFACE

The more I spray this the more it reminds me of Scandal, the dry down is definitely reminiscent of Scandal. It’s strong like that. Sweet and honey dripped. It’s also too similar to the original Black Opium to my nose to figure out why it’s extreme since on my skin the original is longer lasting, though keep in mind my bottle of Black Opium the original is from when it was released and it might have been stronger back then idk, but it’s almost empty and I will buy that one again and not this. Though this is really good and strong, I just like how the original performs on me better.

MareaCamacho

Even though I accidentally wore this to a funeral
(Not a good idea because now it just reminds me of that day)
BUT it's still so beautiful.

It's moody, deep, sensual. I now layer this with whatever in my fragrance wardrobe to add that umph to whatever I choose.

This one is a chameleon for layering. It takes whatever profile I use and makes it my own signature.

FB worthy, Repurchase worth for me
Top 10 for lifer.
So is BO le parfum. (Which gives me a boba tea vibe on my skin after maceration )

Im_only_lurking

Ok after letting it sit for 4 months this has become a favorite. I initially hated it for the weak performance but now i want to wear it all the time.
If you find the original annoying and too sweet you will love this. Yes it is dark, but "older woman" scent?? First and foremost, I hate that term and this is far from it. It is mysterious and deep and goth. Just as something named "black opium" should be.

I just wish the projection was better but I kind of like how it stays closer to skin, it suits its vibe.

angeloni

Very rich perfume scent, far from synthetic.

However, for someone who prefers sweet gourmand, amber scents, this is incredibly bitter for my taste.
That cacao is what makes the scent more masculine-leaning.
Think of 99% Dark chocolate, mixed with black coffee. no sweetness, just darkness. Which is where the Vanilla comes in to save the day. The drydown is more feminine than the opening so I am happy about that.

I will ONLY be wearing this as night and in the winter due to it's deep, instense power.
It is not for the faint-hearted at all. quite offensive to certain people but better suited to a mature, bold woman/man.

Edt; Lasts almost 48hrs on my clothes BEAUTIFULLY - the drydown is far less offensive and masculine

Was it worth the money? Yes, I can smell the quality in each spray.
Is it something to wear everyday? NO, You certainly cannot be wearing such a bold, powerful statement scent to work, you will chase people away.
I might come back to talk about the lasting power, I have mixed feelings about it at the moment.

MareaCamacho

This and D&Gabbana Devotion is amazing
Spritz of le parfum bo just for the vanilla.

Michael Couture

One of the best "Black Opium"!
I love classic Black Opium but this is how Black Opium should smell like from the beginning,
Simply gorgeous.

JoyousOne

The drydown of patchouli is AW-FULL

Anabee

This smells exactly like the original but a bit more unisex. It’s fresher and less syrupy. I can absolutely see a tomboy or even a man wearing this. It’s delicious, dark, mysterious. It’s still mostly a feminine fragrance, but with a unisex edge. I love it

Edit: as with every vanilla fragrance.. letting it macerate really adds to this fragrance. All my BOs smell better after some time. It’s like a wine, you have to leave in the open, for it to develop its aroma.

nununana

I really don't like this one, it smells very spicy and heavy, and it does not last at all on my skin. Considering this is the "Extreme" version and I bought it thinking it would be Black Opium but just a little bit stronger and long-lasting, it's needless to say that I was very disappointed. You have to wait a bit for it to settle down to get a HINT of Black Opium's original scent, but overall I think they smell very, very different. To the point that they might be fourth cousins once removed. Maybe. I recently got Coco Mademoiselle Intense (which was a mistake, I wanted to buy the EDP and I guess it's the Black Opium Extreme curse following me around) and even though it's also a bit different, you can tell it's the same fragrance and it DEFINITELY lasts longer. Sadly I bought the 90ml version for this one so I'll be using it more even if I hate the smell... it's a shame really, I absolutely adore the original scent of Black Opium. It did get praised by a male friend to the point that he almost lost his mind inside the car but it really doesn't matter if I don't enjoy it on me myself. I even was surprised that he could smell it since it never lasts on my skin.

summervanilla

Smells very similar to the original, but it's a little bit "stronger" as in stronger cup of coffee. It's a little darker, a little more bitter. It also has a lot of patchouli and has a weird almost soil smell on my skin. I personally don't feel like I need to have both as they are so similar. I have a decant of Extreme and I will definitely finish it up, but I prefer the original though, it is sweeter.

ANNAFRYS

Its my fav from entire Black opium collection seductive and self esteem booster. my fav for fall and winter absolute ellegant.... Smells like a lady with fur expensive bag and nice hells walking to a dinner with gentlemen... OR High class sex worker scent ;)

robwest21

I got the extreme over the la parfum, I feel this a bit more stronger in the coffee and it has that dark vanilla coffee shop vibe, I paired it with coffee & whiskey cologne mist from bath and body it really gives it touch more coffee with the sweetness of the irish whiskey, definitely will be wearing it in the fall.

pinkalpaca

It has the black opium DNA but it leans a bit too much into that patchouli which makes it reminiscent of more generic fragrances such as la vie est belle.

MareaCamacho

LOVE LOVE LOVE
I've had the original in the past and it was never a repurchase perfume but this one is so magnificent. It's not sweet but it is a smokey vanilla. This and black opium le parfum together just Amp up everything it was going for. That combo reminds me of this delicate time in which I am enjoying my newborn baby so its as delicious as my baby's smell. ..the coziness, the deepness, it's like a cuddle with me all night scent.

MariaGabrielaKristina

Beautiful stylish aromat for cold weather. Heavy and mistyc.

maddieonline

This is just a beautiful perfume. I sampled both this and the original and preferred this by miles - it is warm, spicy and rich. It is HEAVY on the coffee/chocolate/vanilla, it smells like a fancy café and cake.
This is absolutely an autumnal or winter and more of a night-time perfume, I think I would suffocate my coworkers if I wore this to the office in the middle of a hot, humid July hahaha. I would definitely like to get a full bottle of this and I'd like to see how it layers with D&G The Only One.
It lasts for a very long time and it's one that I really had to thoroughly wash off my skin. It's far more well-blended and gourmand-y than the original, and becomes more chocolatey the longer it stays on your skin. I would absolutely recommend this!

wo0berry

Significantly more well blended than the original.
at the start it opens with a smoky ground coffee and the dry-down sweetens into a bourbon vanilla.
fell in love after years of hesitation and fear of smelling rancid - id give this perfume some time to people who are considering buying the product

Edit: I stopped reaching for this fragrance after 6 months. Some reviews are right about the lack of sweetness and the smell turning sour. Not sure why, but the bourbon note reminds me of a smoker scent.

Nancy Bella

I got it just now...the first kick is a deep dark fruity liquor very dark...I dont get the coffee or cacao notes ...I also get powder and patchouli so far, not bad but not extraordinary
It is a hot Sunny day today so I will give it a try at night.

This fragance lasted 3-4 hrs on me, sillage was good the 1st hour, after that it remained close to skin. The drydown was mostly powdery vanilla, patchouli and jasmine.

I must say i like the fragance but not in love with It. So I'm going to enjoy this bottle but will not repurshase.

Erika.Lane

This is absolutely one of the worst fragrances I have ever tried in my life. 100% a scrubber. It smelled like rancid coffee grounds that had been buried in wet earth for 2 weeks. I wouldn't even wear it if someone paid me.

Black Opium EDP Extreme
(38U802Y, August 2021, 65 USD)
2nd hands, Male Skin, First Impression

I tired Black Opium Extreme a few times before I put my entry.
Because, I do really like it. After few full wear, I am ready to put my review.

Black Opium Extreme is very in-line for other Femme Fatale scent
That Man totally can use similar to TomFord Noir pour Femme & Guerlain Black Perfecto.

The scent seems unpromising in the opening as Vanilla blast
is Dominantly sweet but later on scent develop in the way difference other than
other Black Opium.

White flower is not strongly show here, Coffee is strong but it is not the star of the show.
I found the Powdery Cocoa is very dominant and it is bitter. It is on the base of Vanilla (that not that sweet) and Patchouli is also there, cooling and clean similar to Guerlain Black Perfecto.

I found that, this is slightly harder to wear as it is bitter and unsweetened.
But I could see me garbing this from time-to-time, but the scent leans unisex than most Black Opium of the line and this will be another kept in my collection.

Final score
Score : 9/10 as male user
Projection : Strong for several hours, become moderate never skin-scent
Longevity : 9-10 hours
Classification : Unisex, Femme leaning (Femme 60%, Homme 40%)

anntdangg

Very pleasant, well-blended upon the opening with coffee and hint of floral note.
However, dry-down is unexpectedly sweet from vanilla while the coffee is hard to detect.
Wish the coffee note lasts stronger until the end.

baibyy

To me, this SMELLS JUST LIKE Dolce&Gabanna The Only One (see-through bottle) but a bit louder/stronger.

Night of April

I totally love this one. It is mysterious, dark, with a hint of sweetness. When you smell it, it is addictive and makes you want more of it.
It is a perfect balance of vanilla and coffee, both perfectly separated yet they blend well together. I can't describe this one without saying that you feel like an empowered scorpio queen who knows she is wanted and elegantly playful.

Allybabaa

I hate the black opium line. But this was the only flanker I could tolerate (I ended up getting a bottle to try and immerse myself in the gourmand game). My ex liked this on me, but I didn’t. Like I said, it was *tolerable.* I then ended up selling my bottle because I just couldn’t learn to love anything in this family of perfumes. They smell gross to me and low class! Juvenile and the basic clubbing scents you would smell on a group of drunk girls in the downtown scene. Not appropriate for women who have their lives together or who are trying to have people take them seriously.

cinnasnow

Smells great on the scent card. Florals are prominent with a background of chocolate, coffee, and vanilla. That is how I would like Black Opium le Parfum to smell. Unfortunately, on skin all I'm getting is espresso (kind of burnt smelling), a little chocolate, and bourbon (very heavy bourbon) vanilla. I won't buy.

Smeraldina77

Sweet creamy white flowers and coffee, nothing extreme, honestly, not groundbreaking, but pleasent and comforting. I do not find it either so sexy as it is marketed, but it is probably because I am older than the demographic this fragrance is marketed to. Although I am neither that old, I find the original Opium waaay sexier. I have a little sample, I will use it, but I will not purchase a bottle. Anyway, I think it is not a bad fragrance at all.

hellebelle

I intentionally tested this for the first time shortly before getting in the shower because I’m sorry to say, Black Opium has always been a scrubber for me. I have *never* been able to detect any coffee in the original nor any flankers I’ve sampled, and the “orange blossom/jasmine” notes are always very much like grape kool aid/bubble gum and do not agree with me at all. I was delighted when I sprayed this with a light hand and immediately smelled coffee! Strongly! Not quite Intense Cafe Ristretto strong, but it was very distinct, and really nice! Combined with the sweet, immediately recognizable opening of Black Opium, except with the (awful) grapey orange blossom accord toned waaaay down, with a little bit of dry cacao. Do not get me wrong, I do not agree with reviewers who describe it as “omg a macchiato vanilla frappe, with whip cream, pumpkin spice, and hot chocolate syrup!” It absolutely smells like perfume. But it’s a very nice, gourmand perfume, and I love the coffee note. Awesome! Love this! We have a winner from this line, finally!

So after an hour or so I took a shower, got dressed, and applied this as my fragrance of the day. Wtf now I don’t smell any coffee, at all. Now this just smells like regular old Black Opium, just slightly better. Like it was reformulated by a different perfumer who used slightly different ingredients. I wore it all day, it performs just fine, is fairly linear, but the coffee note never came back! I guess I’ll test it again later, because clearly the perfume didn’t change, the issue is me but I do not know why! :(

Edited 5/26/23: I still can’t smell the coffee like I did the first time I tried this, but I’ve been reaching for this a lot lately. I don’t think”addictive” is a very good descriptor when it comes to something this subjective, but I’ve found myself oddly compelled to smell it, and several days I’ve regretted wearing something else instead of this, so, addictive it is! I’m in this game for happiness, and evidently sometimes happiness is a disgustingly sweet fruitchouli ¯_(ツ)_/¯

dglightblue

I've got several flankers from this line. Many are not different enough.
Today this one is falling a little flat on me, I like on the tester card, smells similar to original.

I may try it again on its own, I'm testing le parfum also and I think that is skewing the results..

I have loved it before. Weather plays a part also

Twentzel

Best Black Opium flanker ever! How beautiful and perfect is that gem?
Dark roasted coffee with a hint of cacao and vanilla, perfectly balanced, intimate and elegant.
This is what the original Black Opium should be!
Although the name extreme suggests it’s going to be a bomb, it’s a subtle fragrance, tends to stay close to skin but lasts all day there, only to please you. You will not bother anyone around with your fragrance.
Strong longevity and intimate sillage. Can be considered unisex.
Perfection defines it!
It’s the kind of fragrance I would like to bath and swim inside of it! ☕️🍫🖤

pinkfairygumdrop

HOLY CRAP this one is the best of them all. I thought i LOVED the original til I smelled this. its so well blended, deeper, darker, richer on the coffee. I absolutely adore this one. I already have backup bottles of this stuff. its just incredible! lasts a while on me too

jakedean03

If you're a girl you need to wear this. It's so hot. Trust me (coming from a 19yo guy).

goldearth

This has the DNA of the Original Version. But it's bitter, much more bitter. It's like they created this Extreme version by roasting the Original Black Opium on charcoal. Not my favorite version of BO. The discontinued Intense version is better than this.

Rach2star

At first i can smell Dark Chocolate and then it dies down to a sweet vanilla ice cream. It's strong for the first 30 seconds then is very weak so great is you are looking for a subtle perfume. Not so great if you are expecting a strong scent such as La Vie est Belle

poodleParty

I don't reach for this often, but it's sooooo good. I think it really depends on the weather, because sometimes I think it's too masculine (it's definitely unisex), but sometimes the dark coffee/cacao notes really shine, making it a lot more "mature" than the OG. If you find OG too sweet, then maybe you'd like this one.

LaMiaRosa

I really love this scent. It opens with a blast of coffee and patchouli, then transitions to jasmine and vanilla in the drydown. As it wears off my skin, just the vanilla is perceptible. What can I say? The opening is delightfully fresh, while the drydown is warm, cosy and comforting.

One of the reasons I love this scent is that it reminds me of something my mother would have worn. I think if she were still here she would have really enjoyed this scent.

How does it perform? Projection isn't huge and it's more of a "personal bubble" scent but even after hour 6, I can still smell the vanilla projecting from my skin. It lasts a long time on hair and clothes too. I actually like that this isn't a "beast mode" scent with huge projection and sillage. With this scent profile, it makes much more sense for this to be a personal bubble scent. This scent is alluring and special, just for you and the people you allow close to you.

I'm not sure if I would call it "sexy" but there is something intimate and romantic about this scent. It brings to mind the image of a date at a cafe with a pretty girl on a cold, rainy day. You lend her your jacket and when she returns it, it has the most delightful smell. Soft, warm, inviting and feminine... It's so good that you can't stop holding the jacket to your nose and smelling it, having sweet and loving thoughts about your girl.

EDIT: The above review was based on a sample I own. It's a sweet vanilla jasmine. Just got a bottle and the smell is totally different! Super coffee, much darker and less sweet. Smells like coffee with a dash of milk. I think perhaps once the liquid ages the vanilla becomes stronger and sweeter.

Frangrnaticforfragrance

Wonderful scent.
At first spray, you'll meet the coffee, the vanilla, and the background Patchouli. As the scent sets in your skin, a rich cacao dances along the coffee while the orange blossom and patchouli are always there in the background being commanded by the Vanilla.
Its a ballroom of scents, warm, embracing and seductive.

threeonethree

This smells incredible on my wife. Holy smokes.

Im_only_lurking

Ok I'm changing my review and rating completely, because apparently the sample I had was Black Opium Le parfum and not extreme...

Was not disappointed at all by the scent, because it is darker more like a ristretto and not a latte, but the performance is WEAK!!!

Like gone after an hour type of weak.. Doesn't even last on clothes weak.. My zara and guess cheapies last so much longer than this. Hell, even my dove cocoa deodorant is more potent... It's so bad I started searching for info if I got a fake one.

I wore it last night and after an hour it had vanished. I'll leave the bottle alone for a couple months and hopefully a miracle happens when I get back to it.. I should have gone for coffee addict :(

peachpony

I won't say this is repulsive, because I can see that it is a well-loved scent and it definitely didn't make me run to the sink to scrub away. My issue was the dry down as I felt like this was just too perfumey if that makes sense. It reminded me of a girl that is completely different from myself and I think this is where the discomfort came from. I didn't recognize myself wearing it. I found it very strong and almost nauseating.

I'm no perfume snob either, I love my hypnotic poison which also gets a decent amount of hate. Just saying I found this one a little too, well, intense.

PrettyPerfectPatrice

I’ve had the OG for two years and realized I never touched it. Got a sample of this and automatically purchased it. This is way better than the OG. It is a deeper darker suite. It’s more enticing, but it is also very intimate. As far as the longevity I’m not sure, but I am wearing all this week to test it out but I love smelling my wrist is this creamy chocolate vanilla decadence.

rangela71

Ok. With the Le Parfum flanker (which I love) I got into the BO world. I didn’t like the OG at all, way too white flower heavy for me. Taking a look at the notes of this one I decided to give it a try. Given the name “extreme” I thought, that this is gona be a beast mode perfume. Well, it’s not. Not near as long lasting and intensive as the OG. But less white flowers and a bit more gourmand notes makes this likeable for me. I would appreciate a little bit more prominent roasted coffee note throughout the composition, but overall this is quiet a good perfume if you are prepared to reapply it during the day.

Jacqueline.Louise

I really disliked the original Black Opium but this one has been my go-to scent for a year now. I love to layer it on top of VS bare vanilla to really smell like a walking pastry. This fragrance is truly a warm and inviting fragrance and very sweet. It also projects well. I've gotten asked many times in school if I was in the library or a certain classroom before because people have smelled my perfume there.

Omg! I just got a sample of this and i am in love! I never liked the original very much because of the licorice note. I gave this a try and i am definitely purchasing this in the big bottle. It smells so sweet and creamy with hints of coffee that lingers beautifully. So good and will go great in my collection. I love to layer my fragrances but I don’t think i will with this one. It’s perfection!!!!

ChocoLei

It /is/ a really pretty perfume. Definitely a crowd-pleaser, it earns that. I feel like this plays in the easy compliment-getter category.

I like how the coffee notes are more pronounced and more in your face vs the OG. The coffee is not sweet, the other notes are--- but the coffee doesn't feel like an overly sugared mess. It's bitter coffee on top of sweet jasmine, orange blossom and vanilla.

But I still think I would struggle identifying Black Opium Extreme on someone. It's not one of those perfumes I could recognize in a crowd. Not because of the sillage nor the projection, even though it sits close to my skin and doesn't leave much of a trail--- but just because it doesn't feel like there is anything distinct /lingering/ in BO Extreme.

Once the beautiful coffee is gone, I'm left with soft & vanillic white flowers. They're a bit creamy. But I feel like it could be any other generic perfume, and I'm extremely sad to say that. I really don't dislike this flanker at all, I would definitely enjoy it if I were to receive it as a gift and could easily see myself wearing this on a daily basis. But it would be a convenient perfume to me, nothing more. I would wear it on days when I don't know what to wear, when I just want something that fits any kind of mood / outfit / vibe. When I just want to smell good. When I don't want to think. When I don't feel like I want to experience any particular emotion nor tell any particular story through the way I smell.

In short, I just feel like the BO line doesn't have a strong, really characteristic DNA. It's no l'Interdit, no Si, no My Way, no Coco, no Libre, no Mon Guerlain, etc. Whether I like these fragrances or not, what they all have in common is a strong identity I can't seem to find in BO. You can smell any of their flanker blindly and can recognize which big family they belong to. Yes, BO is coffee, white flowers and vanilla. But once again, I can't recognize its unique factor once the coffee is gone & I think it's unfortunate.

Still, I can't deny how nice it smells, that's for sure. It does its perfume job, I guess...

pariamehr

The jasmine is pretty strong and it is sweeter than it looks

AllisonNW

A less candied, less sweet version of the og. The jasmine here is still strong and indolic. I actually think I prefer the og.

LadyMuck

I tried this one on today. At first squirt it pretty much smelt exactly like the original. I couldn't really qualify it as intense..
I let it settle and low and behold as it warmed on my skin over a few hours it did indeed become more impactful and intense. Most fragrances do lose their staying power after a few hours, but this packs a punch and keeps punching in my view. A big hit if you love floral patchouli fragrances.

GinkgoLeaf

This perfume was a big win for me. It manages being a signature winter scent without having to fall back on stereotypical excessive smokey, musky, or gourmand notes. It is unique and classic at the same time, and has just enough vanilla, floral, coffee, and woodiness to not pull you overwhelmingly in any one direction. Immediately nostalgic and sexy. Excellent staying power on my skin and clothes.

barwench

This lacks the sweetness and the pink pepper in Black Opium that I really enjoyed. I may have grown to enjoy it without the sweetness or even paired it with a sweeter perfume, but I enjoy the particular spice that pink pepper gives so I'm going to have to pass on this one.

ashlynbmello

This smells like a coffee/chocolate/vanilla gourmand with a little bit of spiciness. A hip older sister version of the original Black Opium. I dislike that after 3 hours of wear, even when I press my nose on my skin, I can no longer smell it. After I've finished this bottle, I'm going to look for something with similar notes but higher quality.

chicagogirl

To me this smells just like original Black Opium, but with a double pump of vanilla syrup. I don't get any coffee or chocolate notes. Just the vanilla and floral notes. I have never been able to smell coffee in the original either so if you're like me you prob also wont smell it in this. There has always been a huge (undeserved) hate train for Black Opium original. Even when it first came out people hated it bc it was generic. I used and loved the OG when it first came out and for many years after. It's honestly just a very appealing scent. Warm, super cozy vanilla with some perfume-y florals. I still like Black Opium to this day, although I don't use at as much bc after 7-8 years I've gotten a little bored of it lol. There are definitely more interesting scents out there, lets be real. BO seems to be hated on a lot of forums but if you look on any cosmetics site or site that sells perfume and sort by bestsellers first, BO is always somewhere at the top. This is because it's still a mass appealing scent and a huge compliment getter. The syrupy, vanilla warmth of this will be perfect for the coldest months (January and February).

pilardavg

Great alternative to the original Black Opium if you're into chocolate and looking for something deeper.

Black Opium Extreme is exactly what you'd expect as a flanker after reading the notes and discovering this fragrance. The scent is similar to the original. Even though you won't get here that super sweet sugary pear or bright florals that the original has, it still ends with the recognisable vanilla and patchouli combo -and of course, the coffee.

This flanker opens with a not too strong cacao, but it is prominent enough to be noticeable and make a difference. It lasts about four or five hours. Overall, this fragrance is stronger, more refined, cozier and sexier than the original. As a chocolate fan, I have no option left but to love this!

panicattack

I love it. My cold weather scent. I wish the coffee was a bit more prominent and it doesn't last that long on me, sadly.

cowboyfuel

It’s like if you took all the worst things about Black Opium and amplified them x10. There is nothing sexy about smelling like cheap dark roast and expired Dollar Tree vanilla body spray. There is nothing mature or sophisticated about this. L’Oréal, you’ve had more than three strikes already — you’re beyond out. Quit while you’re ahead (you’re behind) and stop trying to desperately squeeze money out of a tasteless, dying line. It’s been eight years since you were publicly denounced by Hedi Slimane. This is pathetic.

AshBud

As a stand alone, Extreme is dark and slightly spicy, bitter cocoa and coffee. The patchouli makes it smell a bit "burnt" in my opinion, and I could do without it. I also think the coffee could be more prominent, but I do get it more here than the original.
As a side by side to the original, I think I prefer the original with its beautiful florals. Both are nice though and worth an add to your fall and winter collection.

ashaheibe

Black opium's hotter, older sister. Love this scent more than life if the sillage was just slightly better this would be one of the best in my collection. Adore the coffee and vanilla smell that it gives - sweet and badass all at once. It's the only perfume I get a rash from which is fine because I can just put it on my clothes but it's not the same :(

Melissadiane

I can’t recall if I’ve already reviewed this one, but it was a blind buy for me. I have the Black Opium EDT from a handful of years ago and really love it, got it on a fall cruise and so it takes me back to that vacation.
I thought this Extreme version sounded like an even better flanker! I love coffee fragrances and ones that are warm and sweet.

I’d say this one I was initially not as impressed as I had hoped I would be. I’ve had it since it came out and just haven’t worn it all that often. However the weather dropped and it’s been cold lately so I sprayed this as a cozy fragrance and I have been loving it! I’m more impressed with it now than when it first came out.

It’s warm, sweet but not syrupy or anything, the coffee and cacao really keep it from being TOO sweet. The middle has lovely white florals, but it’s overall a deep, somewhat dry sweet, coffee fragrance. This one is deeper and more sophisticated than the original (which can lean more youthful and playful).

All in all, this one is a great cold weather fragrance. I sprayed it before going to bed the other day and smelled it throughout the night and it was so good!

Sammbac

I tested out the original, the illicit green and decided on this one. It has greater longevity, less florals but still pretty flowery with a boost of extra coffee in the opening. I've read a few reviews where it has been called a trashy perfume, stripperesque etc but to me it's just pleasant, pretty, warm and wearable day to day, nothing special but nothing to really dislike, unless you don't like coffee. Or flowers. It reminds me of the time I didn't properly affix the lid on my Starbucks take out and accidentally poured half a scalding hot cappuccino into my snood so everytime I wear it I have a good laugh remembering my caffeineated woolens that stank all day and a certain nostalgia for coffee on cozy Autumn days wrapped in a soggy scarf sitting on a pebble beach. I might not buy it again but I feel like I will miss it once I've used it up. Also I got it half price, probably wouldn't pay full price if I did repurchase.

Emma_C

This one is a deeper, darker version of the original. In my opinion it smells better and overall it smells good. However, just "good" is not enough for me, especially considering its weak longevity and sillage. Unless you're head over heels for this scent, I'd suggest you save your money and buy something else.

babydcll

black opiums 16 year old material girl sister.so much better than the original in my opinion.i've tried it at a perfume store yesterday and i get more sugar more vanilla and more like cacao on my nose.so much sweeter and vanilla ish than the og.i can't smell coffee so strong on this like i do in the og.

Marinka71

Hey y'all. I tried it out today: first spray of this on my skin smells of coffee candy, licorice, vanilla, quite sugary.
Drydown: vanilla, sugar, orange flower, jasmine, hint of coffee. All licorice luckily gone.
On clothes drydown all that plus quite prominent patchouli.
Heady and delicious.
Much better than original Black opium. Agree with other reviews that this is less flowery, more coffee infused than original.
That being said, I wish it smelled even more of coffee.
So far the best scent that has coffee as a prominent note, in my opinion.
Luxurious, exciting, expensive smelling gourmand.
Yes, this is really good.
That being said, I've just been out to dine with my in laws, and half of all the females in the restaurant smelled of Black opium. 🤔

Nena's Nana

I’m so bummed! Been waiting for the cooler weather to arrive so I could start wearing BO extreme. When I first got it, I remember it not lasting long on my skin - like literally, there’s no dry down. Back then, I didn’t properly moisturize/oil/prep my skin prior to application so I was sure that was my problem. This morning, I did just that - properly moisturized, and layered with both BBW Coffee and Whiskey as well as Midnight Amber Glow body cream and FFM. I let dry. Topped both my skin and clothes with B.O.Ex and guess what?! Same! It smells absolutely great in the air but even with heavy spraying, there’s no dry down on my skin.
Maybe this is meant for clothing? 🤷🏻♀️

intoxicatinggourmand

I prefer this one to the original black opium. I personally felt like the original was too floral for something i imagined as a deep and seductive. This one is what i imagined the original was before I smelled it: rich and creamy coffee and vanilla scent. It’s so sexy I couldn’t stop sniffing myself and had so many compliments when i wore it out. This is a very unique and divine scent, perfect for fall and winter.

Gyps

I bought this as I liked it. I’ve not been into all the BO perfumes, as I like the original Opium from years ago and never kept up with the times. So, I tried this in a store and liked it. It’s a nice warm scent, not an enormous smell on my skin, but dies down very nicely. I wouldn’t go out and buy a heap of other Black Opiums, this one is just nice for me, and all I want/need. In fact, it’s annoying that when a company gets a popular perfume they have to then bring out another thousand with the same name. Why not name each one differently, as let’s face it, they are all different perfumes.

pinkfairygumdrop

this is my fave out of the Black Opium line, it's coffee, cocoa, spicy, deep, not as floral.....definitely going to be a staple for me in these upcoming cooler months. I'm obsessed. Have the big bottle & a backup. Lasting power is good on me too. Everytime I get a waft of it, it just makes me smile. smells rich & decadent. a solid 10 to me. even better than the original.

Yusrayacoubi

Definitely has licorice, which I deeply hate. Is not listed.

am_xo

This is what I wanted the OG to smell like. The OG is too floral but this hits the spot. Can’t wait to get a full bottle.

mermaidylady

Jealous of those who say this performs well and lasts long on their skin. Did I get a bad bottle? BO Extreme smells so, so good initially. That first blast is all bitter cacao and black coffee, sweetened with creamy vanilla. But then, that's it? It doesn't really morph into anything from there. I get none of the florals in the heart, and the drydown is non-existent. I guess maybe I might smell faint vanilla? Definitely no patchouli, which is fine honestly. What is not fine is that this scent lasts an hour on me, maybe two, if I'm lucky. Disappointing. I recall the original having much better longevity. I'll still keep my little bottle of Extreme, though. Love that initial blast, especially in this fall weather.

Perseous

What should I say. I absolutely love this Flanker. My favorite of the Black Opium Flankers will always be the Floral Shock one (which unfortunately has been discontinued) but this comes in right behind it. Don't get me wrong - I really like the Original Black Opium. But BO Extreme is soooo much better. It is definitely nowhere near as sweet as the Original. The opening is almost a little bitter - but not unpleasant in any way. As the fragrance dries down, it gets warmer and cozier with the perfect amount of sweetness. At some point it almost feels a little boozy to me. Black Opium is like a latte macchiato paired with a Lotus Biscoff cookie on the side. But this is like an Espresso with just a shot of milk and a tiny touch of vanilla. I love to wear it in the winter and I definitely think it is not suited for the warmer weather. Black Opium Extreme performs really well on my skin and stays on my clothes for several days. Gorgeous fragrance!

igalmusic

I don't like this one, it's not a feminine scent at all. In my opinion none of the flankers beats the original black opium.

Scents of a woman

I love this one more than the original. Don’t get me wrong the original is good but this is a little more creamy and vanillic. I sometimes layer this with fresh cream warm cashmere and or La nuit A La Folie. It is quite a delicious combo…. Try it sometime. Lasting power is moderate hence the layering. Warm creamy latte deliciousness.

Spencemonster

I find that NEON is my fave flanker. But WOW this is the BEST intense I've smelled in a while. Next time I find this on sale I'm buying.

Anne1980

I own the original Black Opium, but I no longer love it. The coffee/floral combination isn't a win for me. I was hoping that this version would be less floral and more coffee/cocoa, but it smells very similar to the original. Slightly less sweet, but it still has that sickly coffee/floral combo. If you own the original, this isn't different enough to warrant buying in my opinion. If you're wanting to choose between the two, my vote would be for this because it's slightly less sweet. If you like ultra-sweet perfumes, the original is for you.

a_affan

I love this scent, it should be a unisex scent. Major Cocoa gourmand opening is very delicious. and after 15-20 mins it goes into a floral vanilla region. and resides well into vanilla. not much sillage tbh but it stayed on me for 2-2.5 hrs. The scent is ideal for fall days.

rainydays

This is beautiful. If you found the sweetness of the original Black Opium was too cloying, this would be a great option since it's offset with a much bigger dose of coffee and patchouli. This does come off a little bit like licorice. Now all that being said, I don't know how often I would wear this. It's so rich and deep that I'd probably reserve this for a date night in cooler seasons.

fragrancefemme

This is simply stunning. All the delicious notes are well blended and a stronger combination than original Black. I would wear Black Opium out and about, but Extreme is just for me! I feel an intimacy with this fragrance and don't want to share!

Jeresa545

I was going to buy Black Opium during an online sale as this scent has been on my want list for quite a while, but then at the last minute I decided to 'be different' and purchase Black Opium Extreme. Well that was a mistake blind buying this, as it does not smell similar to the the original BO at all to my nose! The original is quite sweet to my nose (sweet scents are my fave), but this one isn't sweet at all. I get a blast of coffee for about 10 seconds which I didn't mind as I quite like coffee notes, then it fades into a strong, almost generic perfume-y smell with a hint of a licorice/aniseed smell? I don't get any note of chocolate/cacao coming through, and definitely no vanilla to tone it all down. Luckily I only purchased the 30ml, although I think I'm going to pass this one onto a friend as I just cannot get into it at all.

Mona708

The coffee note is much stronger than the original. Also, the dry down has a stronger patchouli note so it doesn’t smell like LVEB. I actually like this more than the original; this would be great for cooler weather.

gurle94

It's the only black opium where I can actually distinctly smell the coffee, especially in the opening. I still find it fairly sweet and wearable, although less than the original. The dry-down has a lot more patchouli. It's great

BeeStork

I love this perfume for fall and winter, or for any date night. The initial spray is close to the OG BO, but to me the dry downs smell so different. This one dries down to an earthy almost incense smell to me, or atleast that is what my skin does. I would wear this all the time if I could, but for me the summer heat in Texas can make this scent nauseating. If it is at night I can handle it, but the heat of the day I can get hit with it mixed in 105 degree weather. Even so this is still one of my top fav perfumes as when I do get to fully enjoy it I feel so sexy and mysterious.

brooke3213

Absolutely utterly beautiful. The most beautiful perfume I have ever smelt. It makes my partner weak at the knees. I always wished the original had more depth to it and this flanker serves exactly that. Divinely delicious and seductive.

lumenflower

On me this smells like exactly 2 (two) drops of vanilla extract and 1 (one) coffee bean.
Great dark academia scent. If all your dark academia friends would sit no further than exactly 1.2 meters away from you at all times because the sillage is Not it. Unfortunately they can't because they are too busy covering up a murder to appreciate your perfume.

Vicky456

This is bitter coffee and dark chocolate for about the first 2 hours on my skin, then the patchouli pulls through and makes the already bitter slightly sweet scent have more earthy-ness to it. After that it does tend to sweeten up some more, but not enough for me to like it.

likesleet

loveeee. what black opium shouldve been. pure latte/coffee at first, then just a sweet vanilla. the white florals enhance the smell rather than overtake it.

mermaidylady

Found a full 1oz bottle of this for $20 at my local thrift shop. Blind bought it because at that price, why not? I like the OG BO but never enough to purchase the full bottle. I did own a full bottle of D&G The Only One but decluttered it several months back because it was getting too sweet and heavy for me. I know that those two fragrances are often compared to one another as being similar, so with that said, here's my verdict on BOE:

It smells a LOT like the OG BO. So much so, that unless you're a huge fan of the line and collect the flankers, there's absolutely no reason to own both. However, given my choice between the two, I'd choose this one because it is less sweet. There's a bitterness here that tempers the fragrance in a good way. I'm at a stage in my fragrance journey where I really can't tolerate overly sweet gourmands anymore. This is the BO for those who find the original too sugary. Longevity is meh, though.

KrisGreen

Review from a guy - I smelled this at a store, wanted to try something new. I don’t like womens scents if they smell like candy usually, but this is an exception.

I tried sniffing testers to other versions of black opium, smelled nice just not for me. Almost all black opiums were too sweet for me, until I tried extreme. I sprayed my wrists and left ear and walked around the mall after purchasing.

I could smell it on myself walking around and don’t go nose blind to this! Not sure if it’s something that would get me attention from guys, but my female friends tell me it fits me as I’m a big coffee drinker and love chocolate.

Trying to find another “man magnet” that can work on a male like me since crystal noir got decimated in reformulation. Even if this is not my new man magnet, it’s a keeper and will purchase again.

I could smell it on my clothes the next day!! Fast forward a month and it hasn’t gotten weak at all or lost staying power. I get wafts of it when skateboarding or shooting hoops all the time.

mdluli

opening notes are spices I guess its coffee and cacao or some kind earthy note(patchouli) then it becomes sweet not sickning sweet .There are some similarities with the intense I guess is the liquor.

This is very addictive you find yourself reaching for it more often.

Stoned.Zombie.Cat

At first you really get the Patchuli and a little bit of the Jasmine. Its not until its dried down that you really get the Chocolate & the Coffee but when you do omg it smells so yummy

Motherofhavok

Love, love, love! Imagine spritzing on a slightly gourmand vanilla that’s mixed with just enough patchouli to make it smell like a grown woman’s perfume. But, now imagine that you spritzed it on just as you were about to meet someone for coffee. You know how you’d be able to smell both your fragrance and the coffee shop simultaneously? That’s how this is for me. It’s like smelling a sexy date perfume inside of a coffee shop. The coffee doesn’t “blend” for me. It stays distinct, which I love. I was picturing floral and coffee mixed together as one smell and dreading what that would be like.

Usually, I can’t stand cacao scents. They come off cheap and artificial usually. Not here. Instead, the cacao and coffee come through together- almost like you’re drinking a mocha latte while wearing perfume. I swear, it’s witchcraft the way they’ve kept the notes separate so you can smell them simultaneously without them congealing into one singular smell.

While I consider this to be very sexy because makes me picture going for a nightcap after a date that is going so well that you don’t want it to end, I could easily picture this as a daytime scent, too. The coffee really makes it go either way. The patchouli is great. Some patchoulis come off as screechy, some come off as wealthy, and some come off as hippie. This one gives me those “rich auntie” vibes.

I keep using feminine descriptions, but it could easily be a unisex scent. I’d like this on a man. I could just as easily picture a person wearing this to the office or to a hot date. I could see a person over 55 or under 30 wearing this. Yet, even though it could be THAT versatile, it’s still somehow unique and special. Such a cool fragrance!

helegg

I like the original Black Opium quite a lot, but Extreme is even better. With the OG, I felt it was too sweet, "direct", and basic for what the look of the packaging suggested. A wonderful scent and I'd love to wear it, but not super unique to me. Extreme is less sweet, but darker and a bit mysterious. Very sexy. I love it. It's a great nighttime scent, but coffee makes me think of daytime so I think it's suitable for the day as well, as long as I use it lightly.

Linawani

At first, this scent didn’t speak to me. But somehow the coffee note really grew on me and I had to have it. Since I love a strong smelling perfume, I got the extreme version. I am coveting this perfume more for evenings and nice outings to dinner, but if I’m in a more luxe mood, I use it for the day. This is an instant classic, definitely is going to be an always staple in my perfume wardrobe.

twiztidladii

This is so good. So much better than the OG. The Coffee note is so prominent but not in a bad way. This definitely feels to me like a “bad bitch” fragrance. Definitely a confidence booster while wearing it. Love it.

Yousra M.

Unexpectedly I absolutely love this one! I own the original, nuit blanche and tested the intense version, and the Extreme is by far my favorite.
The sweet coffee/cocoa/spicy vanilla notes are addictive, it is reminiscent of my beloved D&G The only one, minus the powdery vibe.
The only apparent con for me is that my skin eats it quickly, it doesn’t last on me longer than 2-3 hours before becoming very faint…I am not an oversprayer but I think I need to be for this one, it is worth it.

Mjchaelj

The best version of Black Opium, this smells to me like a mocha vanilla latte, with some liquor in it. I love this gorgeous gourmand. God this is so sexy.

9.5/10

billy_krimber

such nice coffee in the middle notes, pretty vanilla as a base, really nice night scent

KylieBooFace

I dislike the opening, but the drydown is the sexy and amped up dark facets of Black Opium.

fragranceboy97

I do really love this stuff. However lasting power is WEEEAK! I wouldn’t call it “extreme” by any means other than a stronger coffee scent, which I do love. Wouldn’t wear it any other time besides winter as it could get messy.

irlfireprincess

Sprayed this at Sephora, and I wanted to like it, but it’s a little mature on me. The opening is VERY bitter with the coffee and the cacao. I completely miss the florals in the middle because the next thing I detect is a very powdery vanilla laced with prominent patchouli. Unfortunately this fragrance is three things I dislike in one, all which are detectable: bitter/spicy, powdery and patchouli. And yet I didn’t hate it as I expected to. It’s very well blended. Maybe in 5-10 years I’ll come back to it.

Paulittaa

Absolutely obsessed. It’s so cozy, dark and sexy.
I love the balance between sweetness of vanilla, chocolate, floral and bitterness coming from the coffee. It even smells slightly Smokey.

Catnipple

To me it smells like the original but lasts slightly longer

Mariamaija Amélie

Black Opium Extreme is absolutely and wonderfully round, velvety, warm, fruity, sensual, delicious, addictive, captivating and perfectly sweet to my nose. I don't know why I get a huge load of a juicy pear note in the beginning, but I do, and it isn't even listed in the notes. The scent is a little bit dense, but not overpowering in any way. Especially if you are used to, or just really enjoy perfumes on the heavier side. All the notes are blended so EXTREMELY well ;) Am so happy to own this one now. I would use this all year around, but not on a very hot summer day, I think. Longevity, projection and sillage are all in the space between the medium and strong category, from my experience, depending on your skin chemistry, the weather and how much you spray.

turkishgirl

Compared to the original on me it smell more coffee and last longer
Need a 90 ml bottle!!!

dglightblue

Really not much different from the blue absolu version.
Rounded, coffee ish a bit sweet ish...
The edp original has the most throw.

This is the understated version I suppose, it's subtle, non offensive.

Not nearly as bold and noticeable as the accords suggest. But still nice

SpaceTrex

Wonderful! I don't mind the original, but to me it wasn't enough. I wanted more coffee and a deeper mysterious vibe. BO Extreme is exactly that! Definitely more unisex, not in a way that it smells more masculine but genderless. Very dark, not sweet, yet very yammy coffee. Extreme is what I wanted the original to be, and it definitely suits it's name

fiatpurpura

I happened to buy this on a rainy day, and this was just what I needed on a cold, wet day. The coffee and cacao complement each other well. I don't detect the jasmine (especially compared to the original Black Opium), but I suspect that it and the orange blossom (which I do notice, ever so slightly) are helping to round out the other notes. The lightly boozy bourbon vanilla in the dry down seals the deal for me. It's warm and the bourbon gives it a more mature edge, but it doesn't pull saccharine sweet on me. Usually, gourmands make me nervous because I don't want to smell like food and sugary scents in particular remind me of middle/high school, but this somehow manages to hit all the right notes for me. This doesn't have the most intense projection, but I'm okay with that - coffee is a strong, bitter note, and I could see that being problematic for others if it's too aggressive. Overall, I love this and will likely come back for more in the future.

Longevity: Moderate (leans a little longer in cold weather)
Projection: Moderate (leans a little on the intimate side, depending on how my skin is doing that day)
Vibes(TM): Drinking an Irish coffee with cocoa powder sprinkled on top
Overall: 8.5/10

natak2

I prefer this massively to the original. I never really was a huge fan of the OG, too syrupy sweet and not enough coffee. This is exactly the opposite, not too syrupy sweet and just enough coffee. I’m obsessed

realitygreene

I'm a big fan of the original Black Opium. I don't care that it's super popular, it smells good especially on my skin. So I was excited to try the Extreme flanker. Having not had any experience with cacao, I wasn't sure what to expect. Immediately I hated this. The coffee wasn't smooth and the cacao was extremely bitter. Also, the patchouli is pretty strong and harsh as well. I just don't like this at all! Not as good as the original.

keyshaedreana

It's such a shame that the longevity and projection on this one are very poor because I like Black Opium Extreme a lot better than the original. It's more elegant and the coffee note comes through more. However, I had to reapply this one several times through the day because it sits close to the skin; it's ironic that this is the "extreme" version.

blake.lee

It’s OG Black Opium with a heavy dose of earthy patchouli added. If this sounds appealing to you, go for it!

perfeptions

Great twist on the original Black Opium, this Extreme version is extreme in the smell. It's chocolatey for all of its life, it reminds me of a niche perfume I own as it couples very similarly white flowers in the heart with the ever present "chocolate". For more details please watch my Youtube review on my channel perfeptions: perfume perceptions.

alyssaintx

This has really grown on me. I've had it for 2 months, and find myself reaching for it more often. The longevity isn't more than 6 hours for me, and by that point the sillage is radically decreased, but I still enjoy it.

This is not a complex scent, and neither is Black Opium. It is sweeter than I usually like perfume, but a bit less sweet than BO. I love the amplified coffee and dark chocolate, and vanilla is always welcome. The sweetness comes from the generic white floral aspect of the fragrance. It's still lovely.

This should be The First One - The OG, I'm really impressed!
I'm so happy YSL made with this flanker and a little bit compensiatoned the orginal one which is pretty and nice but has nothing I could expect from this maison. In this version you have that YSL elegant, haute couture sexiness with dimmed lights, luscious red lipsticks, sensual games of glances. This scent is smooth, perfectly blended, you've got that black demonish coffee (thanks again for not adding something milky or gourmandy!), yes - this coffee is dark, earthy and made to seduce and ignite sparks not to drink or eat. Hence You're not walking dessert but Super Woman with super powers who whispers sins to ear... :) <3

Black Opium Extreme, I think, should be excellent for everyone, who seek dark, sensual fragrance without tons of vanilla or gourmand notes which seems to be everywhere now, so I'm really really happy with this reaveal of Black Opium which was dissapointed for me as too juvenile and simply 'nice' as Flowerbomb flanker for teenagers....

Dark coffee, dark & dry cocoa powder, patchouli and divine little touch of white flowers... Heaven....

Midnight Lady

Notes missing on Fragrantica: pear, lemon, tangerine, cherry... Quite a lot, huh?

After first spray I was confused. Couldn't smell anything in particular except so heavy, dark and dusty stuff where citrusy feel was cutting through... It really took my skin a while to develop this one. But then... Cacao with coffee (not as dark and close to skin one as in J'ose by Eisengerg for example) and some juicy feel from fruits. I can even notice that cherry. I wish citrus note was more toned down though. Can't tell flower notes apart myself.

I can't decide what to think. Whether I like it or not really. I'm so confused 😅. It's intriguing for sure. I shall say I have CH Good Girl Legere on my other arm atm - very lovely gourmand, which I like, and is louder than BOE. But with those two next to each other BO Extreme is way more mature, almost like BOE saying to GG "back up kiddo, a woman is here"

I need more testing here I think.

Lucky7z

This version of Black Opium I'm enjoying a lot! I've been testing it out the last few days and impressed with how much more the coffee note really comes through (with the regular version I can hardly smell it) the vanilla bourbon and cacao really come through too I love it!!
Now here's my only issue....sillage starts off moderate then within a hour on me it drops off to a weak medium. Longevitiy...I get about 4-6 hours from this...wich isn't a deal breaker I have no issues with reapplying but with this being label "extreme" I expect a powerhouse...IMO this isn't it lol On me this performs better then the original version wich I love too but I can see myself now not repurchasing the original but getting this instead I really love how the coffee note comes through with the cacao and vanilla bourbon....this is addicting!!

mariakok

90% similar to the original Black Opium. The remaining 10% is intensified coffee and some chocolate. A slightly deeper version of the original but almost identical

NaaatNaaat

If you like the opening notes of the regular Black Opium and wish they'd last longer, then you might want to try this. I get a more noticeable coffee smell that stays longer than it does on the regular version. It is heavier, more complex and less suitable for daytime but I think I might prefer this to the normal one. It's heavy, sweet, a little spicy (which is usually not my thing) but this one has something about it that I like.

KöbiD

This is a much sweeter version of the original Black Opium. Besides the added sweetness, I also perceive the sillage to be much weaker, almost like the fragrance contracted due to its sugar overload. Otherwise, I do not get any difference. So far, Black Opium Neon has been the most distinct flanker.

Comrade Zagoryanskaya

As original Opium (which I adore) is considered to be a true masterpiece of a fragrance firmly holding its’ place in history and top fragrances of all time, I naively thought that it’s current owner L’Oreal would keep this in mind and try to preserve original Opium DNA in its’ flankers. Also judging by ads, description, notes (here on Fragrantica) and reviews this promised to be predominantly gourmand coffee and cocoa - notes that in my mind could compliment original Opium so well that I almost have bought blind a full bottle of this Black Opium Extreme. Thank God I haven’t and ordered a sample first. Eagerly I’ve applied it and couldn’t believe my nose: all I was getting were wiffs of 90s-00s generic and immensely sweet fruity white florals. The most boring type of fragrance out there to my taste. Being really puzzled I’ve opened an official site and there it was:

TOP NOTES: PEAR ACCORD, MANDARIN ESSENCE

HEART NOTES: ORANGE BLOSSOM, JASMINE GRANDIFLORUM

BASE NOTES: COFFEE ACCORD, VANILLA BOURBON PREMIUM MADAGASCAR INFUSION

Well, I guess it’s more like it. After about 2 hours a cloying fruity-floral nightmare started to go away and gourmand began to come out but at that point the fragrance turned really quiet transforming into skin scent within one more hour.

And the original Opium? Perhaps if you really want it and try really hard you might feel a faint shadow of it in the very end of this one. Or maybe it’s just a cognitive bias because of the name.

Eventually to me this Black Opium indeed is Extreme - extreme example of a sad and disappointing commercial exploitation and misleading advertising.
Hard pass.

Short review for small changes:

Smells like the OG but more intense. Still no coffee scent, disappointing. Barely any cacao other than the bitterness of a fresh bean, this sounds bad but it adds to the scent in a good way. The patchouli shines trough during the hours and makes it nice and linear. I personally like this, and it's a safe buy if you like the original but don't want the powderyness of the OG.

Remdav

Just divine! Choc and coffee smell really do come through in unison with the vanilla
Just wish it would last longer on me

MaxieF

I put one spray on my pants yesterday in ulta and I kept smelling it throughout the day. It's more gourmand then the original. Unfortunately my boyfriend doesn't like it because he says it smells like lavendar. He actually doesn't like the original either.. I personally really enjoyed extreme. But it's so strong that I can't imagine going through a bottle in this lifetime. The vanilla is slightly amped up, cocao , and white floral are a bit smoother. Still smells just like black opium but it's smoother and more well blended in my opinion. It's just more coffee which I think everyone's happy about. It really is stronger then the original. I would consider a bottle if my boyfriend didn't hate it cause unfortunately we work together so my chance to wear it would be rare. I think it's lovely.

alisonjwhiting

Though always grateful for a flanker that bears some resemblance to the original, I was quite surprised by how extremely similar this was to Black Opium. It is still a sweet, caffe latte affair, though dusted with a dry dark chocolate that really comes out in the drydown. It's pleasant and wearable, but a bit safe. Someone elsewhere in the thread made a comparison with Ylang Ylang Espresso by Floral Street. That has a late night espresso bar vibe that I like very much (though it also has some cigarette smoke, so your mileage may vary) and which I was hoping for from Black Opium Extreme, but it was not to be.

Controlledbyscent31

I actually own the edp, these days I do not reach for it, my 12 Yr old daughter does alot though...
It makes me realise & feel I have grown in my fragrance journey since I first purchased the edp all those years ago.

I was quite interested to sample this when I got the chance as I never really got the coffee note how I wanted in the og but I have to say well done ysl/ loreal (side eye at loreal) I usually hate it when they take over as they usually water stuff down (cough MUGLER alien 😭 )
That aside.... This actually has detectable coffee notes that stay around and don't dissappear so quickly.
I also like the addition of cacoa too adding more depth.

This was what I was expecting and longing for from the original black opium but nevermind ive moved on...

I won't be purchasing this just because I know I'm over this scent profile and still have a 3/4 bottle left of the edp black opium to last me a lifetime but it's nice to see its improved even under loreal... finally after flanker after flanker later....

dglightblue

cacao, vanilla bourbon, and patchouli i reckon... there is probably a white floral in there giving some rounded lushness.
cacao lending a powdery feel, the coffee is similar to say the OG and maybe the intense one??
i love patchouli when its clean or earthy, i only have a tester card here so cant say what a skin test will be like.

from memory the original is a bit sweeter, the intense one is more coffee ish, Neon is more banana-ry, i have tested lots of these and have a couple of different ones, go with whichever lasts the best for you.

adamh9201

Just like the original but deeper with an added cacao sweetness. It’s much more unique than the original.

sondermelon

I don't really get the coffee in this one. Starts out with a strong vanilla/chocolate sweetness to a drier chocolatey scent for me. I'd compare the coffee in this to more of a vanilla latte or frappe than a distinct coffee smell for me. I like the ending with the patchouli, vanilla, and chocolate. Can't explain why but I was having dust allergies and a whiff of this after spraying it on me cleared my sinuses up lol. Maybe all the coffee notes went towards sinus clearing and nose resetting than smelling.

Noirca

I just tried the decant of this because i was very curious of how it will last & how the dry down smell. So at first it’s kind of a boozy sweet scent, i don’t get the coffee/cacao at first, but somehow i get the cacao notes in the dry down with that bourbon vanilla and patchouli. It’s not that delicious sweet probably because the vanilla it’s different & it’s kind of a unisex not for like girly girl or teenagers. So i’d rate this 4/10 for me, while the original is 8/10✨

Fvmoustrilla

this projects like a beast and the longevity is amazing! I bought this one on a whim just to add to my collection and it didn't disappoint! I could smell it all day just because I love coffee scents but I have to say there's definitely better options out there. but not a bad fragrance though, if you're just starting to get into fragrances this is a great one to add to your list

silent_hill_dylan

I was so excited for this and it was a huge disappointment. I get almost no cacao, it's much less sweet and the longevity and sillage are an absolute joke! I definitely recommend skipping this and either going for the original. 3/10 from me :(

Starlight_moon

I don't understand why original BO and its flankers get some much hate.
I remember when the original first came out and my Mom used to wear it, I hated it even though it has all the notes that I usually like. My guess is maybe it didn't go well with my Mom's chemistry for my nose. It's weird, I know..
So I stayed away from it. When I found out that YSL came out with the Extreme version with "dialed-up" coffee and cacao notes, I decided to give it a try. And I gotta say- it's a very nice fragrance!
It smells delicious and not overly sweet! Maybe because I am wearing it during the winter, but it's not cloying or heavy at all and it feels like you are walking in your own personal cloud of sweetness.
The projection is not bad, it does lean towards "intimate" which I kind of like, because not many people like to be hit in the face by someone's fragrance trail, so I think it is a good thing.
The scent is still there, people will notice it but only when they get close to you.
The longevity is ok. I think the fragrance needs to be reapplied maybe once during the day. Because I couldn't detect even a small hint of on my skin after 7 hours.

Chellywellie

I’ve tried the original, Neon, Intense and this one. This one’s the worst out of the four in my opinion. It’s a darker, older version of the original with less of the sweetness. Try it if you didn’t like the original’s sweetness and want something that feels a bit ‘dirtier’. I’m sure what note is overriding them all - I’m not very good at picking them out yet.
I feel like this is the least helpful review I’ve written but it didn’t inspire me enough to find anything more to write about it. Please don’t hate me, my other reviews are better. Marginally.

theoneandonlykatyc

the opening of the coffee is soo strong, then it turns a little more sweet, chocolatey, like a sweet latte. i love it

karinatfragrantica

My first reaction was "Oh no, why so sweet?" This would have potential, the coffee note is lovely but the sweetness is too much for my taste. But I can see this being a good clubbing scent, probably a real compliment getter. Just not my scene....

candy_apyeon

of course I love it
I still don't approve but I can imagine what it would be like to wear this on a very cold night
because it is seen that it is a more bitter aroma and much more powerful than the original opium
but the old flankers could also return
I mean, if they launch a new one, those who had the set of notes could also return where they differentiated between them
I'm talking about floral shock and nuit blanche
I hope and next year they come back ..please ysl♡♡♡♡

Carlysfx1

Sensational. I’ve loved the original black opium for years, but this really takes the coffee and jasmine to the next level. It is so warm, delicious and comforting, I could bathe in the stuff. I get almost no orange blossom and patchouli, and the dry down smells like a hot mocha with vanilla syrup and a splash of bourbon. An excellent winter fragrance.

MAlessandraM

Am I the only one who thinks this smells so much like Poison Girl EDP?
I got a sample of Black Opium extreme and sprayed it on the back of my hand. The first thing I got was this beautiful burst of coffee, dark and strong, which I loved! But that was short lived, it vanished in lake 5 minutes, leaving me with this syrupy sweetness that I don’t disagree, but is not what I was expecting. I didn’t get the cocoa at all. After around 30 minutes it started to remind me of another perfume I have. At first couldn’t identify it but then it came out: It was Poison Girl Edp! It took me by surprise because their notes are nothing similar, except maybe the vanilla.
Then I went and sprayed PG on my other hand and could see the difference: whereas BO is a little darker, PG has this distinctive almond note and also has more presence. But I swear that I still get exactly the same vibe from both of them.
I wouldn’t think about getting a bottle of BO if I already have the Dior one

spiceysauce5

Agree with Duskfall below, and honestly thing it’s a great fragrance, but veers a tad too much away from the original. A bit too gourmand, too rich and heavy. Maybe a bigger focus on the florals while keeping the coffee black and the sweetness down would be perfect imo. Still a very good scent, I’d prefer it to black phantom for sure, much more wearable.

6.5/10 subjective
7.5/10 objective

Duskfall

It's much less sickly sweet than the original, which is a good thing as far as I'm concerned. Unfortunately it occasionally becomes extremely bitter on my skin. Way too bitter to be pleasant. Sometimes the bitterness is not so overwhelming and you get to enjoy a mellow combination of vanilla, coffee and cacao. In other words, it has potential, but behaves too inconsistently on me. Average performance.

Marina.Klr

A really great cup of hot brew coffee mixed with sweet and smooth vanilla cream! Such a delightful pick-me-up!

It really smells "black". I believe that in winter it can be worn throughout the day. The rest of the season I would only spray it for night-outs.

It is dry, not sticky, syrupy or cloying. At first it made me a bit dizzy, but as the intense sweetness subsides, it gets along extremely well with the skin. A more mature aspect of the original, with minor but significant differences. In the opening it smells just like the original. It has the same fruity feeling, the same excessive gourmand sweetness. But it’s more intense. I also smell the orange blossoms and a little bit of jasmine. When it dries down, the original DNA is there to a very large extent, but it smells like real raw coffee beans mixed with soft powdery yet creamy vanilla.

So the predominant scent that remains on the skin is coffee beans with vanilla, while in the original it’s vanilla and notes like pear, raspberry, almond etc - at least on my skin. It says that it’s “extreme”, but actually I find it more inoffensive than the original. In terms of longevity, it’s nothing remarkable either. Maybe they chose that name because of the more prominent coffee note, which is truly of better quality as a smell than on the original.
P.S. here I do not smell cocoa at all.

MademoiselleMaya

It made a good impression on me, when sampled in Sephora recently. Coffee note intensified, without an overdose of sweet notes that strangle the coffee and cocoa aromas. This is a feminine and still parfumy take on coffee. Maybe, finally, a Black Opium for me.

brendawbp

I have been dreaming of having the Black Opium line in my collection. And finally I got it from my close ones on my birthday. Safe to say, this is my favourite!

Coffee beans and cacao smells amazing, and to have that on me feels great. I don’t like flowery, “girly” perfume that are sweet, so this perfume gives me just the perfect feminine, mysterious, smoky scent. If it doesn’t cost this much, I would wear it everyday. But now I just use it on special occasions.

Definitely a MUST HAVE in my perfume collection.

LSAUG

Take international delight coffee mix, combine it w/ cheap hot chocolate mix and then mix all of that w/ baby powder and add some sharp chemicals to that mix and that is this perfume in a nutshell. That is my opinion. My husband thinks it smells like a wash rag from a Starbucks. Either way not wearable and I hope I never encounter anyone wearing this so called perfume because I would think a guys girlfriend spilled hot coffee all over him to cover up the smell of his cheap Ax body spray. The more I smell this it does smell like the combination of a bad coffee candle type perfume and Ax body spray combined.

Hum_C

This one opens with a burst of coffee and cacao which smells so good and more gourmand and sweeter than the original. I love the smell. But after like 20min, the coffee cacao scent disappears and I can't smell anything at all! I love Black Opium original and I was very excited to get this one in my collection but in terms of longevity, it's terrible.

panda-inc

Tried this at my local perfume counter. My impression is that it is less sweet than the original Black Opium Yves Saint Laurent. The coffee in this smell more like dark chocolate. I like the dry down better than the opening which is leather and bitter chocolate on my skin. Smell more masculine but this is addicting. Suitable for cold days and night.

Gruhlanska96

Coffe beans scent, great spillage and lasting power. It is recognisable, likeable and attention grabbing

twoski

I got this because it's apparently the least cloying of all the black opium flankers. To my nose, the white floral notes are still very dominant here. There is a noticeable coffee and cacao accord, but initially it's mainly white florals with a heaping dose of sweetness. It's like a super sugary sweet, flowery, slightly gourmand smell.

Almost too sugary sweet for my liking, but bearable. If the other flankers are sweeter than this one then i probably will not like them, this one is already pushing the envelope.

I think this would probably suit a younger woman, i'm sure there are better coffee fragrances with less sweetness that would be more suitable for all ages.

I really want to like this one, but i can't help but feel like Black Opium (and its flankers) are one of those "basic" fragrances, feels kind of one-dimensional in a way with the hyper sweet white florals taking the spotlight. Maybe one of these flankers manages to pull off something different, but this one was kind of a letdown for me. It's wearable but i probably won't be getting a full bottle once i burn through my 10ml travel bottle.

Also as mentioned, performance isn't really anything to write home about here. On a test strip i got abysmal performance, it lasted for about 30 minutes and most of that was the screechy sweet white florals before the coffee came out briefly then died down. I really hope this will work better when i spray it on myself.

Eleroy

YSL, for the love of god, can you finally move on from your envy over LVEB? Because someone on your team clearly wanted to do something more with this one, but you just *had to* decrease coffee, add orange and make it sweeter overall.

Deutsch100

I have the original Black Opium and Black Opium Intense. So of course I was so excited to see Black Opium Extreme! I added to cart and was just going to blindly buy it....but thankfully I reminded myself that I do not love original Black Opium and the Intense is only slightly better. The Intense slightly mellows the white florals that I loathe in all perfumes, but they are still there.

So many positive reviews about B.O. Extreme, but I must say I am very disappointed with it. I called several local stores and finally found one with an Extreme tester. I put on several sprays, and right away it just smelled like every other Black Opium. If the white florals or extreme sweetness is subdued....it is not by much. The all black bottle looks cool (and is quite masculine), but if you have original B.O. or Intense B.O., I do not see why you would want or need Extreme. I always wished the entire Black Opium line did not have florals, and they were deeper and more gourmand- spicy, and not so juvenile smelling.

Shadow_Slammer

I really enjoy Opium Extreme. The opening smells exactly like butterscotch to my nose, followed by boozy, chocolate coffee. My only issue is the dry-down is a bit floral for my tastes. I wish they would amp this up even more into a beast mode "men's" version. To me, this is a floral gourmand and my favorite in the Black Opium line.

anthysis

Boozier and sexier than the original. This is Black Opium without the white floral that I believe tends to dominate the fragrance. As with the OG, it has decent longevity and silage, but nothing too overwhelming. I agree with reviews saying that this is what Black Opium critics expected from the fragrance - more mysterious, more dark, and heavier on the coffee. It's still nothing that would take you off-guard, but in its straightforwardness you have another easy compliment-getter. I think I like this one better :) On my skin, the coffee and bourbon vanilla notes are most noticeable.

vanillaorchid

Not as sweet as other flankers, has a realistic coffee note in the opening, unfortunately not so much of cacao. It is bittersweet, not too strong, but bold. I agree that this can perfectly work as a unisex scent. My partner was very intrigued by this scent, liked this enough to wear it, but his eyes are on Angel EdP at the moment.

Black Opium Extreme dries down to a caffeinated version of the original. I'm not a fan of the Black Opium line in general, doesn't excite me at all, same with La Vie Est Belle. I know the Intense version very well and it's still very sweet to be compared to the Extreme. Personally I find that this is the best formulation around the original DNA and it is the only one I have found worth spending money on. Longevity has slightly improved, too. Still, not a 'love'. Would rather gift this to my partner rather than wear it.

GladToBeUnhappy4

First off, this is the one of two Black Opium fragrances I didn’t have trouble smelling. I’ve tried the original only in dabber form, so maybe that’s part of the problem? The Neon flanker is the other I could smell with no effort. So the fact that I don’t have to stick my wrist to my nose to smell this is already a plus.

Secondly, this is everything I thought (and wanted) from the original Black Opium. Although my nose can’t discern the cacao from the coffee, it does smell like a chocolate coffee drink. Compared to the original and other flankers I’ve tried, this is the smoothest. The Intense and Neon (Neon has been my favorite until now) had some sharpness that I didn’t really notice until I tried this one. There is still a slightly bitter note from the coffee and cacao, but everything blends nicely and helps keep this from becoming cloying. The boozy vanilla doesn’t take long to appear, which is one of the main reasons I chose to try this. I would prefer more “booziness”, but this delivers. It’s almost like an “Irish” chocolate coffee, with the addition of a creamy vanilla Bailey’s.

I’ve only had this on for 2 hours, but it’s still as strong as it was when I first sprayed it on. Silage for me is moderate to strong. As far as it being a night or day fragrance or seasonality, I would use this anytime of day. I’m in ATL, where it was 66 degrees F when I first sprayed this on, and it worked beautifully. To some, I can imagine it might be too much for extreme summer temps, but I prefer louder fragrances and don’t like to limit when to wear them.

Overall, I love this and already have it on my “next to purchase full bottle” list (unless I try and find something better before then). I’ll certainly keep a travel spray on hand. There are certainly others similar, but if you like Black Opium and feel it was lacking, this is the 2.0 improved version!

Hannehoney

I tested this in store today and I loved it! This one is darker and less sweet than the original, the coffee is more prominent. I want this for Christmas! :)

thefrenchie

It’s basically the exact same thing

ShowMustGoOn

Very, very sweet. Yes, there’s is some coffee in the beginning but it’s milky, sweet coffee, loaded with sugar. In fact, it is very faint in a true coffee sense really. This is so similar to the original but the original is not as sweet and patchouli heavy on the dry down as this one.

One hour later in turns into Lancome La Vie Est Belle on me. Oh, no! I don’t like it for that reason. Heavy nauseating patchouli. I don’t mind patchouli at all but in here it’s nauseating.

Longevity is great, especially on clothes - stays for days. I have a dupe of the original black opium (Zara Gardenia) and that’s enough for me. I also have a small original Black Opium.

I won’t be investing in a full bottle of this. It’s a pass for me.

DanielJD

WOW, this is one of my favourite releases of 2021, it’s extreme alright! The initial blast is sharp Cacao, it’s like a volcanic eruption. The Jasmine starts to shine through and it dries down into pure pleasure, not for the faint hearted.

This fragrance is definitely unisex. I wish more houses would ditch this gender nonsense when it comes to fragrance.

10/10

Eclectorina

I was expecting darker, prominent coffee, less sweet opening. But now, one hour into it I'm doubting if I'm able to wait much longer to purchase it.

On paper it's absolutely stunning! An hour in it's also refined on skin, ahh it's sooo good, just one spray. I love it.

And yes, it will become an intimate scent if you want it, which is good cause then you have the choice how much you want to share it. Playing with it on skin, clothes, hair (yes me), overspraying etc. is a must to find the optimum.

The cocoa emerges slowly on my wrist, so soft, I get brown sugar mixed with comforting vanilla throughout. As if it's the vanilla inside a warm bun and the chocolate is inside a croissant. Without the pastry, just the warmth from it. I get coffee in the back of my nose, as if it's just barely layering the other scents and you've had your sip of a weird cuppa and now your focus is on the treats and mouth watering flowers. Difficult to distinguish the flowers but they are there.

What kind of coffee is it? It comes and goes, ooh I know... Somebody's vaping coffee!!

The whole scent suddenly becomes a Hookah joint on Hollywood Boulevard. It makes me want to get a job, and drink no-lo at the Shard. Hence a must have in my rotation.

It's one of those scents with DNA that nods to beautiful rooted memories and associations so no chance of tainting it yet. It's already established, two hours in I'm addicted.

alit

Disappointing release. Don't get me wrong, I like pretty much all Opiums but with Extreme in the name I expected way more.... of everything. It's nice, just doesn't live up to its name. I wanted more coffee (barely even there?!) , more cocoa, more punch. Instead what I get is greatest hits of Opium, Good Girl CH, L'Interdit Intense and some Tresor a'la Folie. They just added more patchouli in this one and called it a day. Or "coffee/cocoa" in this case. Nah-ah.

IAmStaka

I'm a guy and I would really love to smell this on a woman! Yes, it has a lot of "mainstream, girly" DNA, but it has character, it has edge. I love it and recommend it 100%.

PGak

I am testing the Extreme side by side with the original. The Extreme which does lay closer to the skin and has less of the loud screechy projection of the original, still has great compliment-garnering sillage. The original in 2021 now smells very dated to me.

Contrastingly, the new Extreme has a more modern gourmand twist and is far less sweet. Notes that are prominent in order are as follows: Cocoa, vanilla, coffee, patchouli. Orange blossom/jasmine are only present in the opening. The magic happens on the dry down: you end up with chocolate. Dark chocolate. Bitter dark chocolate. Drizzled over a thick creamy vanilla that is ever so slightly sweet. And every so often wafts of fresh brewing coffee engulf you. This is delicious and SO comforting. I can smell it floating around me all day long - it leaves an amazing scent trail! The Extreme is a very refined and elevated version of the original and IMO is the best in the line! Lovely fragrance and so happy to have it in my collection!

KowltheOwl

This is a wonderful mix of coffee, chocolate, flowers and patchouli that is beautifully blended. It's very dry but the sweetness peeks in and out throughout the day. I tried this at Ulta a few weeks back and kept thinking about it...like the tall, dark stranger you meet eyes with at the subway station. Sadly he won't be mine but the 1 oz. bottle of this beauty now is!

lunarxphase

FINALLY I can smell the coffee note I was so keen on trying Black Opium for to begin with. It was only recently I even bothered and although I liked it, it just wasn’t good enough for me to want to buy for myself. I adore this version though and am so happy that the coffee note actually stands out.

It has lasted well too, even though it was only a small sample I can tell longevity is decent.

Scentedalterego

This flanker is made for all those that missed the coffee in the OG. Basically this is like the OG, but with an extra shot of espresso that makes it less sweet. It has a slightly 'dry' hint in the opening that must come from the cacao, not at all unpleasant. Very well done. The best flanker to date in my opinion.

The OG black opium is one of my absolute favorites, despite my large collection. It just works well for me, not at all generic, is has many facets with its jasmine, liquorice and pear. If feel this is a little less complex, no pear, but the added coffee is realy nice. High on my wish list!

The performance similar to the OG.

MKPNorway

Absolutely delicious! This is by far the best version of the BO perfumes. Sweet but not overwhelming and the patchouli isn’t taking over either as I think it does in the original (at least on my skin)
The notes most noticable are the cocoa and coffe but it beautifully blends with the other ingredient to avoid it becoming sickly sweet.
I love it! Very well done YSL!! 👏👏👏

aldinatic

This is wonderful, so sweet, comforting, so delightful and feminine :) The best flanker so far :) I love it and no wonder everyone loves it on fragrantica :) The initial spray espetialy, the dry down layes flat :) The sweetnes comes from the orange blossom, vanilla cacao bled. It is indeed another dimension of scent. Full bottle worthy.
p. s. Omg the comments that it smells like milo milk chocolate are lit lol
Don't apply before bedtime, it will be impossible for you to sleep :)

diddilybop

i agree with SailorV in that the "extreme" element in this perfume doesn't mean that it's a room filler or a beast mode fragrance, but more in the sense of that BO extreme is richer and deeper - especially in the dry down. the original was like venti-sized sugary caramel machiatto with a big bouquet of gorgeous white florals by it's side. whereas, black opium extreme is a cup of bougie pour-over coffee, with a splash of vanilla cream, and gently dusted with cacao powder on top, that's next to a small vase of a couple of delicate white flowers. i find it more wearable than the original too.

i sprayed this on tonight before my partner came home, and immediately after he gave me a hug, without me asking, he said: "oooh! you smell REALLY nice!" - and he's not really into fragrances...so, i think that says a little bit of something, haha.

This is very nice, One of best in this collection its so much better than the edp its just to much coffee in it ..but that blue one is one of my favorites.. Maybe for holidays will see..

Black Opium is one of the best examples for a designer fragrance with lots of flankers which are almost all very close to the EDP. This makes them hard to review for someone like me who loves the original: They all smell pretty good, but they're not very creative and it's unnecessary to own several of them. So my final question on how to rate a new Black Opium flankers is: Would I replace my EDP with this flanker if I ever run out?
The answer for Black Opium Extreme is YES. I absolutely would. This is lovely. Extreme has a wonderful added cacao note in the opening, very reminiscent of dark chocolate. Together with the characteristic Black Opium coffee note it gives a similar bittersweet, delicious vibe as fragrances like Rihanna Rebelle or Atelier Café Tuberosa.
I also enjoy the subtle addition of juicy mandarin orange. The pear note of the original is toned down, so the whole scent feels a little warmer. (Fragrantica doesn't list the fruit notes at the moment, but they're on the YSL website and you can smell them!)
The drydown is creamier and more patchouli-focused than the original, it also has more body and lasts longer - quite fitting for an extreme version, even though it's not a room filler.

I disagree with the idea that this is an unisex version of Black Opium. Any fragrance can be unisex if you're daring enough, of course, there are no gendered rules for wearing fragrances. But I definitely get a white floral and sweet vanilla base typical for feminine designer fragrances from this. Maybe a little less than in the original, but too noticeable to let this pass as a traditional unisex fragrance.

I almost feel guilty liking this after so many negative reviews, but I really can't help myself. I'm really really liking it, which is unexpected, considering I hate BO with a passion. This almost seems like an entirely different perfume to me. It's dark, sensual, and sweet just enough. The cocoa is beautiful and almost reminds me of Private Accord by Boss, only stronger, better lasting and generally more interesting. I'm seriously considering getting a 30ml once I'm done with my sample.

Smelling this made me realize why I don't care for the original BO: I take my coffee black. The first BO was coffee regular with all its cream and sugar. This is BO for those who take their coffee black, even if it is vanilla-flavored.

Extreme?

In what sense or way?

This is a much more quieter scent than the original. (Abyssmal projection on skin)

A skeleton of the original - coffee, vanilla, a slight wiff of patchouli. Little flowers, very little spice. A lot less sweetness.

A sad bottle, nothing alike the glamour of the Nuit Blanche bottle.

I guess an oversprayers dream, spray all you want, within half an hour you won't offend anyone.

Get a tester before buying a full bottle. Spray on clothes/hair to get at least some longevity and pleasure.

Unless a collector, I would spend my money on the original or on some other flanker (preferably on the first ones; Flower Shock, Nuit Blanche)

I like this and think it smells pretty good. I find it for some reason to be similar to into the night by bath and body works, this just smells a little more sophisticated. It’s dark, chocolate, dry, and patchouli is definitely a stand out note here. The patch isn’t bad tho, it’s done in the best way which is smooth and not overly dirty green. I think if you like darker sexy scents this might be up your alley but I suggest smelling it before blind buying it. Take a tester home and give yourself time to get used to it, I hated it at first, but have come around to really enjoying the way it smells and the warm feeling it gives when smelling it on someone. Nicely done!

Finally got my sample of Extreme after YSL accidentally sent out samples of the OG to everyone who applied lol! Honestly good on them for emailing everyone and apologising about it, for such a big brand to make a deal out of free samples is pretty cool.
Anyway, the scent. I was a big fan of OG Black Opium back when I started collecting, but over time got tired of the powdery floral nuances of it and wished the initial dark, sensual phase stayed. Extreme is so close to the vision I had. The coffee on first spray is far more in your face than in the first. And not in a negative way either, the gourmand aspects of Extreme have a real voice whereas they were drowned in a sea of vanilla and florals in the OG. The cocoa in this? Divine. Initially this frag reminded me of Black Opium Intense, then morphed into Ylang-Ylang Espresso by Floral Street (but nowhere near as awful and nauseating as that). Now it is just the top phase of Black Opium but here to stay. It has a backbone. It’s mature but sexy. Honestly? I might even be tempted by a bottle.

I like the original Black Opium, tho it is a bit too sweet to my taste.
This extreme version is, like another member mentioned, what the original should be: more coffee, less sweetness.
I like both of them, nevertheless.
Unisex in my opinion.

This is what the original should be. Coffe, sweet cocoa, whilst keeping the original dna minus the over whelming head ache inducing florals. Slight bitter nuance, which makes this smell much more expensive than the original. However this lasts all of 10mins. Shame. I would’ve bought a big bottle after testing this sample if only it lasted!

Update - I’m finding I’m craving this.. but I just know it doesn’t last so still I won’t buy it… but the smell is so good..

I find the original black opium quite boring so I was prepared to be underwhelmed by this one too... But I actually really like this version. I can never remember what the original one smells like, it just doesn't create any images or associations in my mind. To me the extreme version smells like a bar of dark chocolate with chili, warming, slightly bitter, dry and quite festive. I can smell the accord that I think is meant to represent coffee, but really it just gives an overall warmth and bitterness to the otherwise overwhelming sweetness; kind of like drinking a hot chocolate out of a mug that previously had coffee in it. It's not a strong enough coffee note to even call it a mocha, but it's more noticable than it was in the original.

Last night I wore the original on one arm and the extreme on the other and, side by side, the differences are not that noticeable... I don't know though this one just smells more memorable to me for some reason. I could still smell the extreme on my arm this morning whereas the original had disappeared. I would say the sillage is moderate. I am toying with the idea of buying a bottle...

I often used to walk by a roastery as a child, where coffee was processed and roasted. Describing the aroma that came out of the raised and glazed shutters is almost impossible by me. Only those who have tried, or fortunately still try a similar experience can understand it, assuming they love coffee ☕.
Don't know why I was expecting a perfume like this. Alas, in Opium Black Extreme I don't perceive coffee in any way, if not a very hot cappuccino, masterfully served and slightly sweetened (but I drink it bitter, like coffee, for that matter), tasted in blissful peace near a flowering shrubbut, light years away from a coffee, and even from a good one though.

Nevertheless I think 'Extreme' is my better option among the whole line, all the more reason between Original and this one, is elegantly sweet, its trail is quite faint and a softy cloud embraces me, cocoa powder does its job very well in taming, like softening the notes that would otherwise echo euphorically.
This detail has great value for me and makes a difference for the better.
Definitely my next purchase 🖤

Gorgeous opening, 1 minute joy and then, well time for an artificial disappointment. What is really happening nowadays with the new fragrance releases, I mean in general, come on...

I love original black opium so much, but...
Omg I obsulutely HATE this. That overpowering patchouli and coffee gives me headaches and makes me want to throw up. I know people have different tastes but can't believe someone like it, it's disgusting.

Ravenrage

This disappointed me. I don't smell the coffee or cocoa. Instead I get a weird artificial sweetness, that I don't like. I guess I saved some money. I like the OG and Intense better. Actually it smells like a cheap dupe of the OG. However, my free sample should be on its way, maybe I'll like it more later.

Because of the reviews I almost didn't buy Black Opium Extreme. Instead I decided to buy Hugo Boss The Sent For Her Absolute. ( So disappointing. No strength or sillage whatsoever! And no coffee either ). Then just one day later Black Opium Extreme became available in the UK. I argued in my head all day. Buy or No Buy! In the end, I decided I wouldn't buy it unless I could get a 30ml bottle. And a good discount. I managed to get it for £46.80. And I am so pleased that I did buy it. To me, it smells like a much more easy to wear version of the Original Black Opium. It is still sweet. But not migraine sweet. It's warmer and creamy. I don't smell the dry cacao others talk about. I smell milky coffee and vanilla. It's not the strongest fragrance in the world. But I don't find it particularly weak either. Much stronger than Hugo Boss The Sent For Her Absolute. I'm really happy with my purchase of Black Opium Extreme. Next time I'll buy the 50ml bottle. As long as I get a discount of course. lol
