I love it :)

I've had a bottle for over 10 years and I've barely worn the fragrance. I remember sampling the perfume, and especially on paper I thought it was a very realistic gardenia scent, with that mushroomy note and all.

Unfortunately, on myself I don't get gardenia but a cool, synthetic, slightly green generic white floral. It lacks the heavenly creaminess of gardenia, but has a sharp clean note instead. Doesn't smell like any particular flower to me (or on me).

I don't know what to do with the bottle since I really don't see myself wearing it. Such a shame.

Ambercrazy5

This is such a lovely, creamy and smooth gardenia scent, almost like a gardenia-suede feel. It's very pretty and sleek - almost too perfect for me, as I equate this scent with someone very well put together, perhaps a bit buttoned up, and far more prim and proper than I could ever hope to be. Yet, it is an absolutely beautiful example of a gardenia/ white floral forward perfume, with decent longevity and intimate to moderate sillage. I've managed to finish my 75 ml bottle over the course of a couple years, and while I've enjoyed my time with this charming scent, I'm not sure I'll feel the need to re-purchase.

Really get that LOTV out of the gate. This is creamy and very white. The gardenia is soft and fresh. I feel like the jasmine keeps trying to take over. And it (unfortunately) kinda does. I still get the gardenia but it’s buried a bit. Not crazy sweet / cloying which is nice but it isn’t what I was looking for. Very pretty if you are looking for a daily light white flower perfume with a little gardenia. Pretty linear in what you see is what you get.
**I came back to say this turned a little powdery about 2 hours in. Super soft fluffy powder. It’s nice. This perfume feels very soft and feminine to me on the drydown.

The Scentimentalist

Serendipitously, I found this to be my favorite jasmine-forward scent! Based on the reviews, I thought I was getting Elie Saab No 2 lite ( No. 2 is my ultimate gardenia soliflor), but it turns out to be not so much about gardenia but so much more about a mesmerizing jasmine with fizzy citrus and neroli in the beginning and a micro dose of indoles. The greenness must come from the LOTV, and then it settles down into a nectar like jasmine with just enough creaminess to be rich but not cloying. I did detect a hint of Elie Saab No 2 here and there. More interestingly, in the deep dry down (3-4 hours later) it smells like California Reverie ! Almost as if Gardenia Petale is the cold spring months and when it ends, the weather gets warmer and air breezy - perfect season for California Reverie. Where Gardenia Petale ends is where California Reverie begins. What an amazing seasonal continuation! I am enjoying both very much.

My wife owns this particular fragrance which admittedly does not worth the price point that you are paying for due to the fact that does not last so much long. In general, I fully understand that the scent profile is quite unique, hence it is a niche scent, however has various downsides, especially the overall price taking into consideration of course the sillage along with the longevity

Scentsitivewoman05

Currently wearing this in rainy humid city, and still expect a miracle so I can see this in different vibe rather than watered down version of dyptique doson edp. The gardenia gone in 5 minutes and leave you not even with any jasmine or LOTV but it leaning towards tuberose even when it is not listed in the notes. For the price point, the longevity and projection is moderate. Again, if u already have dyptique doson, no need to buy this, just use your doson.

This perfume is really classy, it's a beautiful dewy, wet and green floral. It's a wild and creamy gardenia. It reminds me the perfume Kai edp but with greener trail. I'm trying a sample and I love it, I've just ordered a full buttle. I think the Collection Extraordinaire by Van Cleef & Arpels is amazing, these fragrances are very subtle and great quality.

AnlisaC

Such a beautiful floral soft and warm. Smells unique but doesn’t last long whatsoever. Sillage is close to skin. Great fragrance for spring.

aleksandrej

lovely and sophisticated smell, smells classy and expensive however i do wish it lasted longer !

Denu

I tested this in my local fragrance store a couple of weeks ago and absolutely loved the dry down where a full, rich and creamy gardenia emerged - couldn’t stop sniffing my arm! Just bought a full bottle and am wearing it for the first time today. It’s a lovely gentle floral, stays quite close to skin on me but after three hours I’m still aware of it. It’s summertime here in Australia and this is a great option for the warmer weather.

Cathped

Smelled better in the bottle than on my skin. Too bad for it seemed fresh and floral. On my skin it ended up harsh and somewhat synthetic smelling.

HeatherMuffin

Something underneath this reminds me of Nag Champa incense. It’s really faint and I might be pulling out that scent , but it’s like floral soap with that toasty incense barely noticeable from the back bedroom.
It’s really a beautiful fragrance, but I can’t do it for my memory with that incense. It still smells incredibly beautiful! That bit of toastiness is gorgeous!

Also! This smells nothing at all like California Reverie … nothing.

marymargret

"Gardenia Petale"? Mhm ... Not much, maybe "Jasmine Petale". It's clean, soapy and musky, with a pretty shy gardenia. I expected almost a heavy, full-bodied soliflore fragrance, but it's not, not even close to the magnificent, intoxicating and sultry flower. So if you want the real thing, you have to look further.

WhiteFlowerPrincess

This is definitely a nice and well-blended perfume, but I feel like this smells slightly generic and like other basic white floral perfumes I have smelt before many times over.

It doesn't last long or project that much on the skin, either and it doesn't smell like gardenias, which is one of my most favorite flowers and notes in perfumery as well. I would know, since I have lots of beautiful gardenias growing in my garden!

This is pleasant, but forgettable. I'm glad I smelt it at my local David Jones when they finally restocked it, since for a long time this was on my want list for perfumes. It's good I didn't blind buy!

SophiaViolette

Opens with fresh white florals all at once, beautifully balanced. Smells very classic and clean on paper, and way more sugary when on my skin.

I wasn’t impressed at first, until I sniffed some more on my skin… once on warmed up, it gets musky, with of course the white bouquet still being very present!
However on paper it leans fresher, white, very feminine, a hint powdery. I didn’t get any citrus on my skin, but on paper I do get a hint of it.

If you have or want ‘California Reverie’, I feel as you don’t need both, they’re like sisters. This one is sweet but not as gourmand. Inoffensive floral. The white florals get too “sugary” for me to consider a full bottle.

This is dainty, pretty but boring. I love white flowers but there needs to be more oomph for me to keep.

MarianB

Soft sweet white flowers. Gardenia and jasmine stands out. It smells fantastic. But it doesn't last at all. On clothes maybe 2 - 3 hours, on my skin it's gone after half an hour.

Happy Birthday to me! Gardenia Petale is one of my special birthday gifts to myself. Gardenia is my favorite note, at present, so I decided to buy myself several fragrances that were predominantly Gardenia. This was a blind buy that I ordered online, and I must say, it was very successful. The box that it comes in is very nice, and the bottle is classy--it exudes affluence. I love the fragrance! To my nose it is a very effervescent, but musky Gardenia. The Jasmine note is the co-star, but it does not take away from the soft, bubbly boldness of the Gardenia. The Citruses are subtle, but produce a freshness that makes you feel like you've just stepped out of the shower. There is a deodorant-y, cleanness that is produced in the dry down that, also, adds to that shower fresh feeling. Gardenia Petale is just lovely. It is appropriate for most day activities. It projects really well, and is long lasting. Today, I have it layered with Elizabeth Taylor's Gardenia body cream. The two make magic together. This is not a safe blind buy, unless you are in to white flowers and clean fragrances.

Siv7Stars

Beautifully creamy gardenia, not feeling it's very green but not bothered about that side. A blind buy I couldn't be more pleased with. Well maybe if the box was in better nick but the bottle is perfect n so is the scent. Longevity 3-4 hours on me.

christyness

This is a super expensive perfume that dries down to nothing other than powder within ten minutes. The audacity. There are better scents at the grocery store.

StopHammertime

Smells like Jasmine and green notes, no gardenia at all, I was pretty disappointed.

Air of Grace

Being a white floral lover , my new quest was to find gorgeous , gardenia perfumes .

I have Isabey’s Gardenia which is so pretty but way too powdery, Annick Goutal’s Gardenia which I’m not a fan of( maybe I got an old expired bottle ) smells like dying flowers and Kai which is a fresh , strong , prominent gardenia that lasts for days . And finally the queen , Tuberose Gardenia by Estée Lauder . That is a masterpiece and I’m sorry I find the similarities very different .

I chose Van Cleef’s GP as it was noted as green . I didn’t want any fruity, Spicey , gourmand notes to deflect from the floral notes and this was it .

What a pretty scent ! It’s an effortlessly chic scent . Very classy and elegant .
Just what I wished for - such a well made mixture of white flowers of quality composition .

It’s definitely now one of my favourite perfumes .

Green and crisp at first , which is such a joy but short lived .

I can’t classify which notes are predominant , the fragrance just flows into a clean, sophisticated , light , gorgeous , white floral .

I can’t smell any citrus notes but maybe it’s creating the freshness . There is an underlying cardboard smell , which I now believe it’s sandalwood . But it stays throughout. On my skin , it’s a woody floral yet there aren’t any wood notes listed 😱. But reviewer Kirinneyears mentioned sandalwood and musk which I agree .

I thought it might be sweeter having so many white florals but it isn’t . However , some reviewers mention it’s sweet, or creamy or soapy or powdery which I don’t get at all. It’s actually quite dry as a scent on my skin .

To me , it’s a day scent that you can wear anywhere , nothing loud that offends . It stays close to the skin.

My only whinge is that I have to reapply often, maybe it’s my nose and it’s just a subtle fragrance , not meant for projection which suits me fine .

I can still smell it on my wrists the next morning so I believe the longevity is there , it’s just a scent meant for the wearer.

Had to get a bottle 💓💓💓

DT953

It's very lovely, but also not exceptional. If you own Chanel's Gardenia, you don't really need this. It's worth giving a try but it really just smells like, shockingly, gardenia with a little bit of jasmine. A natural floral sweetness, a touch of soapiness which isn't a bad thing here. From memory of the cost of the actual fragrance, it's pretty decent value for money. As far as private collections go, anyway.

Edit: It really doesn't last. I got three hours on it.

kirrineyears

Gardenia Petale is one of my favorites and a great blend of everything sensual and feminine. It has the white floral bouquet, sweetness, and smoothness done very well. Overall, a high-quality scent that like many in this genre modify jasmine notes with creamy textures to give a painting of gardenias. The mid to dry down has a vague resemblance to Elie Saab’s ‘Essence no.2 Gardenia’. Gardenia Petale is the more elegant version of the two, featuring more musk and sandalwood. Saab’s on the other hand being the louder, brighter, more astringent cousin. A beautiful white floral to add to the collection.

artsymom

For me this is almost straight up jasmine. I don't get lily of the valley or citrus on my skin. Very pretty but possibly a little disappointing if you are looking more for gardenia, which I was. Beautiful bottle, looks and feels expensive. Does not smell like the Estee Lauder Tuberose Gardenia which I used to have, and to me that one was more complex and louder with a very specific Estee Lauder familiarity if that makes sense. By comparison, this is softer and definitely sweeter.

cherubi rubi

This was a gentle watercolor gardenia. A touch lily of the valley, touch green, touch tart, touch sweet, touch mothball, but not too much of anything. I think this is a well rounded delicate interpretation of gardenia.

My only issue is it’s weak and fleeting…

8/10-well done but fragile

Allikib

Got a sample from Luckyscent. Wasn’t one I asked for but I’m so glad they sent. It’s a beautiful straightforward fragrance. So many of my frags mix fruit/floral, floral/musk and this is just so clean and simple in a refreshing way.

Ruby Galore

I bought this one and tried it in the summer, the lily of the valley felt too strong for me. Now that it’s colder it’s much, much nicer, greener, creamier, like cold cream whit white flowers. Now it's beautiful to me.
I can even feel that ‘tropical coconut note’ that some have mentioned, and I was wondering what they were talking about.

DJoy27

This is beautiful. I love VC&A frags. I also own orchidee vanille and love it. My only qualm with this is that it has jasmine—which I love!—but I own another frag that is jasmine centered and they smell very similar. I don’t feel that I need both. I’m hesitant to give this up, but if anyone’s interested in trading me for something else that’s good… please PM me! (:

Ella7712

So feminine, so beautiful! White floral heaven😍
High quality like all the other VC&A perfumes. I highly recommend it if you like white florals.

adice

Crisp, squeaky clean white floral that's just a touch sweet and powdery. Smells really feminine and delicate. I do get some jasmine in the open - first 15 mins or so is VERY white floral. As it warms up/drys down then it gets a little sweeter and cleaner. Love having a gardenia fragrance that does not also include tuberose (which is a big time headache inducer for me). Yep, this one is really pretty for spring and summer. This is a skin scent for sure (no projection after the first few mins) but lasts okay on me 3-6 hours.

Ps. I ended up gifting this bottle to my teenage neice and it became a favorite for her. I think this would be a good "fancy" perfume for young women (though anyone could pull this off).

Ravenrage

This really is beautiful. Well balanced and fairy-like.

Reminds my amateur nose of Vert Malachite a bit. ♥

starsnek

Milky, lightly sugared gardenia that dries down to a very light, barely there powdery cumin and coconut. I happened to have a glass of milk right after I applied my sample and I was very surprised at the similarity. There is a bit of an odd plastic whiff during the initial few seconds, but the perfume overall is so short-lived that this stage really isn't an issue.

I have a little sample pack that includes Gardenia Petale and a few other Collection Extraodinaire offerings. Muguet Blanc is barely discernable from this one, and the dry down of Orchidee Vanille is more prominent but also close. All of the scents I've sampled have been pretty, wearable, subdued, sweet but a little shy. I'll be using up my sample, but I highly doubt any of the Van Cleef & Arpels perfumes are worth the price.

Mooniq

I tried Gardenia Petale a few years ago and then it was not a good scent on me - leaning towards green sharp Lily-of-the-valley and Jasmin mix.
I tried it today and now I must say that I like it alot. Its more towards Gardenia and less sharp green. I guess my skinchemistry has changed over the last few years. Now this is a fragrance I want to wear

Yana_Yana

After having tried this scent, Jasmine Sambac & Marigold, and even Rouge Malachite, it's become pretty obvious that I do not care for white florals. It does smell rather dated to me. To put it shortly, I would not want to smell like that. I'm not going to rate this perfume as someone who loves and understands white floral will do a better job at this. However, I seem to really like all other scents from Collections Extraordinaire.

katheryne_art

A very soft gardenia perfume that stays very close to the skin. The texture and the softness of it reminds me of the Armani-Sun di Gioia perfume. But this one is sweeter, more floral and much nicer overall! However, when compared to California Reverie, the Gardenia Petale one is a little bit sharper. I am not sure which one I like more, but I think Gardenia Petale seems more like a spring perfume and California Reverie-a summer perfume!

LaContessina

Absolutely Lovely.
A creamy but fresh gardenia, not synthetic at all...not cloying as in ELPC Tuberose Gardenia, just to make an example.
It is really well balanced and opens with a fresh note of neroli.
The heart, besides the very realistic gardenia is a jasmine, is lily of the valley, one of my favourite notes.
Excellent sillage and decent lasting power (up to 3 hours).

Get it, it will become a classic.

ivayler

My first ever blind buy, got it 1 week ago and I am very happy. Special scent, I hope they don't discontinue it as in is missing from the catalogue of the reseller in my country.

ReWeegh

Tested today from a sample. Heavy, strongly soapy-powdery white flower scent. Undoubtedly good quality, silage, not sure about longevity, as I had to scrub it from my wrist as could not stand it any longer, but most probably (knowing other great perfumes from this house) also very good.

Unfortunately this scent is not even close to how gardenia smells like, lacks that beautiful creaminess with a dash of sweet cheerful lemony vibe.
Sad...

Bleubook

Sampled this on my quest for the “perfect gardenia.” It just did not stand out for me. An inoffensive well behaved floral. I will not be adding it to my collection. To my nose it does have that older floral fragrance note. A little too powdery. Pass.

Belovedme

This is a fantastic fragrance, from a fantastisk house. Smells so soft, delicate, 100% pure floral scent without any chemically sweet notes in it. It smells smooth, quite long lasting and with pretty decent sillage. Love it.

alixiialice

Creamy, rubbery, indolic gardenia right off the bat. Indolic facets open up to reveal a more transparent and greener scent. Fresh, clean, white and green bouquet of jasmine, some gardenia, and a few droplets of lily of the valley peeking through. It smells of luxurious white towels, the plushest and softest you've ever felt, so simple, clean and comforting prompting the feeling of a mother's loving embrace.

This is suitable for someone who is tender, self-less and motherly. To her, she does what she does best and thinks nothing more of it. To others, she is dependable and a source of wisdom and consolation.

fawneyed_sita

This gardenia/jasmine composition goes a little sharp/screechy on me. For me the gardenia overwhelms jasmine and anything else, especially in the dry down this gardenia gets a little "dirty" or indolic and one-note on me. I realized through my decant I'm probably just not a huge gardenia fan to begin with, so if you don't know about whether you love gardenia, make sure to sample this first too! Upon revisiting this perfume I can smell that its a very natural and realistic gardenia but gardenia alone is just too much for me. But I can see how this would be a great offering for a gardenia lover

Maybe its just because I smelled this next to California Reverie but I way prefer that interpretation of fresh white florals. I think its incredible how much "white florals" really differ from each other as I in particular find gardenia to be totally different from jasmine and tuberose. This Collection Extraordinaire line just has the most magnificent fragrances!

for me 6/10

EmRose24

I bought this as a gift for my mum and she loves it. It's a fresh, watery white floral, and smells very natural. Super classy and easy to wear for both day and night. It's delicate, like dew drops on flower petals. Gorgeous and understated.

denisa_iv

This is a nice fragrance for white flower lovers. Not my favorite gardenia though. I don't know if it's the combination with the green notes or rather the combination with the citruses but in the end, this smells more like orange blossom than gardenia/jasmine to me. I have perfumes that are straight neroli or very heavy on orange blossom that actually resemble this much more than perfumes with a prominent note of gardenia. Surely this is more green/fresh than sweet or creamy, and it the end it becomes quite soapy and lightweight.

It's those green notes that probably make this very realistic and bring to mind real white flowers in a garden, but, for some reason, I expected something a little different and given the name, more gardenia. I find it a little too sharp also but it's not bad, nevertheless. I just prefer a more juicy, sweet gardenia interpretation.

Celine100

This is a soft, lovely gardenia - understated and creamy. Gentle enough for daytime wear, beautiful enough for evening. I'm not usually a rabid fan of gardenia fragrances, but I really love this one !

katsong

This opens up very sweet, like a grape! The mid is fresh and slightly heady, the base is powdery, almost suede-like. It's lovely but a little too sharp for me to enjoy overall.

SmellsS0Good

For me its bright juicy gardenia/jasmin from my garden in full bloom. Not powdery at all. I have tester bottle.

gardeniapetunia

I love and own bottles of Elie Saab gardenia, Private Collection, and Isabey and this is not those.
It's very powdery opening and weak, and as always, I'm glad I only got a travel sized spray and not full bottle. Reviews lure me in and I felt the same way about Oviline, I knew I would love it, not.
I'm editing this somewhat to add that it is a nice fragrance, but very soft, powdery and gentle. I can see its charms.

Swedelish

I was going to edit my previous impression but didn't wanna make a it a novel so it's review #2 instead. I have some things to add that might be helpful to someone.

I've worn GP almost every day since I got it and I've put a significant dent in the juice already because I absolutely love the scent so much.

I learned that it lasts a couple of days on clothes and a good portion of the day on skin. The warmth of the sun and physical activity "activate" the oils on my skin and it becomes noticeably present again (Very nice realization). My skin is normal-dry leaning.

When I first got it I was dousing myself in the stuff because I thought it wasn't doing much. But it turns out I just needed to spend more time with it and let my nose acclimate to it - it's so natural smelling compared to what I was used to. Most designer florals can't come close to the realness of this. It performs exactly how I want It to; projects softly and lasts the better part of a full day.

I wanna add that GP has shown itself to be a true green gardenia, buttery plush petals and all. I still get jasmine but when I smell the scent as a whole I see that the jasmine is helping to create the essence of a real Gardenia flower, not taking over. It's not like other gardenia perfumes I've smelled + my brain needed time to adjust. Kai is in the same vein, but GP isn't quite as soapy old English as that. Kai is like the polished antique of gardenia perfume and Estee Lauder Gardenia Tuberose is more sharp and perfumey. Gardenia Petale is the closest to a real gardenia, in living color.

Swedelish

When my order came and I opened the package my first thought was, "beautiful sturdy box." I love these VC&A bottles as well, with their simplistic design and dangling charm.

I'll just get straight to the point. This gardenia scent is very much in line with Kai. It has the same clean, green opening and old english gardenia soap sort of smell. I sprayed twice on the same spot as I normally do and yes, she's very soft and close to the skin. I'm not surprised given its lack of base notes. Its delicacy is what makes it so precious though.

Quality makes up for its, dare I say, weakness. As it warms up on my skin indeed it becomes more buttery, but no milky plush petals of Gardenia as the name suggests. Gardenia centered perfumes sometimes take my mind to a tropical place, but this is too clean to go there. If I'm honest Gardenia Petale is much more a soapy jasmine, in some moments a suggestion of gardenia.

I'm happy to have it and I will wear it with joy. I was outside today and it's sillage was perfect in the breeze. It delicately swirled around me, softly present. It's glorious outdoors in the warmth of spring, and so so natural. As far as gardenia creations go, Gardenia Petale isn't my favorite however. It's jasmine forward, which may frustrate some, but I don't consider that a flaw.

Of all the gardenia perfumes I've smelled I still prefer my good ol' Marc Jacobs edp for its creamy, albeit less realistic, nuances. Suffice it to say, I prefer a less polished, more "perfumey" gardenia, one that's most likely created using tuberose and jasmine.

It isn't what I envisioned, but there's a place for it in my collection. I've been looking for an easy, welcoming floral I can throw on that will play nicely with my daily doings as a mom, while smelling luxurious. This nails it for that. It makes me feel effortlessly pretty. There are no bells and whistles. Just high quality, gorgeously feminine white floral perfume. It's a stand out for its sheer beauty. I can also see it gorgeous on a bride.

cranky137

Creamy gardenia. So Beautiful. On my skin, gardenia opens with way too much coconut, which I love. It creates this summer breeze/sunlotion feeling without being too ozonic.

It last also very well on the skin with very soft sillage.

It reminds of The Body Shop Kahaiia and Aerin Hibiscus Palm. SInce I am downsizing my Collection, I had this one to go.

Amust-try for gardenia lovers.

Thai_Florist

Please believe me, this is the most fragrance that have a smell of Gardenia for real!!! Like a real gardenia 80% based on my experience with a gardenia that I've plant for a long time. The top note for me it was like a neroli, then the base comes very quickly with a real super duper real gardenia, if you only smell gardenia in fragrance, please take your time to going to flower market to smell the real gardenia, because this is the fragrance that can adding a smelling of gardenia so true! But....the longevity so poor for me like it was disappear only for 2-3 hours, so sad...but if was a great gardenia fragrance, top of my list!

LionsTigersBearsOhMy

Sweet gardenia at the opening, with just the faintest whiff of flowery soap. Stays bright and floral even as it dries down. Has just the right amount of sharpness and retains its gardenia heart. I am not particularly into "green" florals but this one is unashamedly gardenia and I love it.

Fixafejjan

Beautiful creamy floral. Super classy, great for weddings etc.

Camsacci

Citrus and green are the first notes to hit my nose. Gardenia then gently steps in without being too loud, but blending in and toning down the sharp notes from the first spray. I love Gardenias and they are one of the only flowers I feel you can smell from a mile away. However, the gardenia I find in perfumes like Tuberose Gardenia (Estee Lauder) is not quite here. That is the exact same scent I got from the flowers, while in Gardenia Petale it gets overpowered by the other notes, especially jasmine, creating a combo that gives off a slight soapiness to the composition. This is a nice perfume, but as per previous reviews, nice doesn't quite make the cut!

saatwik

Lots of oily jasmine in the opening which dominates gardenia. The former recedes and gardenia is pretty much all you get by the drydown stage. Projection - 5/10, longevity - 7/10.

Tt777

This is beautiful- sampled at neiman’s yesterday- gardenia done right- fresh, modern, vibrant and lovely- I think this is best for spring and summer and in the daytime- I see sundresses, sunshine and white flower petals and perhaps a little bit of lace- classy and elegant-I feel this is a pure gardenia scent- smells like a bouquet of fresh flowers- vs a perfume blend that has gardenia notes- added to my want list:)

AMajeedQT

Your classic & gorgeous white floral scent, dominated by gardenia & jasmine, & supported by green notes & lily of the valley who add such a watery/rainy natural feeling to it. Beautifully natural.

Smells like flower garden after a light rain.

Really good but expensive. I'd recommend it if can be found at a good price, say <$80.

cocofluff

- This perfume smells lovely, like a nice spring day. It's an airy and soapy gardenia. I don't usually like lily-of-the-valley but it's used well here in that it's not overpowering and gives the fragrances crispness without overpowering the perfume. Smells like it's best to wear in spring and summer. I really like it. Very refined.

I love green fresh creamy white Florals, I like this one but i find it a little cloying on my skin at the dry down, not sure why may be cause I was smelling and comparing the other similar florals and i like them better. Diorissimo, Galimard Brindille and Kai Kai.
I just got jo Malone Jasmine Sambac & Marigold and it smells very similar, the only difference jo Malone stays true to the scent and dry down is more pleasant, but they totally remind of of each other.

Blind swap for me, and boy oh boy is it a success. Oh I love this so much. It is a buttery white floral that makes me feel luxurious and beautiful. People are correct about the likeness to EL tuberose gardenia, but it is in the best way possible. So gorgeous. If “buttery white floral” is on your wishlist, this could very well be your winner.

This is my first review, but I couldn't help myself.
I am first and foremost a gardener, and have cultivated gardenia for years. I have been searching for a perfume that captures what I love about the flower, and all of them came up short (Aerin's take on the scent was, frankly, an abomination). Most interpretations tend to let tuberose bully the gardenia into obscurity. Not so here.

At first spray, this fragrance comes of very green -- so much so that I almost immediately felt disappointed and thought it was another dud.
However, after 5-10 minutes, it unfolds from those green and citrus notes, towards white florals and then, finally, into what is probably the truest Gardenia scent next to the real thing. It is warm, slightly waxy, but overall a creamy white gardenia floral. On my skin, it smells just like I've harvested gardenia buds and strung them in the house to dry.
This fragrance is truly beautiful and I have found no other that comes close. If you love Gardenia, this is a must-have. Absolutely a HG for floral lovers.

this is my first review - VC&A gardenia petale made me do it! it was a blind buy thanks to your reviews fellow fragranticans and being actually a heavy LOTV collector, i ordered a bottle of diorissimo together with VC&A to fall soft, should gardenia petale disappoint..
BUT oh my, right when i started sniffing at the bottle it had me in its heavenly, soft and at the same time highly addictive embrace.. it smells like i imagine true love - the one that does not have to be loud and in your face but the one that is there, always - confident and at the same time fragile, innocent and pure..i know, there are many scents out there that are "similar", but this one is so amazingly well blended and balanced - a scent that is promising, like a seductive look, but at the same time very innocent and pure. i can't wait to turn heads and break hearts with this <3

This is a perfume for one of those warm Spring days when you go out but a simple caress from the sun just won't do. Instead, it feels more like the sun is wrapping you tight in a blanket and makes a really big knot to be sure you cannot escape... and it feels absolutely fine! :D

Tends to get greener as it progresses. Smells nice and may be a bit too inoffensive, but I think it's easy to layer if you want to spice it up (I may already have a few good candidates in my closet for that).

I like the quality of the ingredients in this collection and had been wanting to have one for the longest time. Do give it a try.

My wedding scent; it holds a special place in my heart. It captivated me at the Scentbar where I first smelled it and I made that tiny little bottle of a sample last my entire wedding week. Perhaps not the longest-lasting, but it has such a realistic, uplifting scent whose greenery smells of youth and soft sensuality like so much that of love (ok I admit, I'm projecting). A white floral to end white florals.

I am so excited now that Spring is around the corner! I first purchased this when the weather began to turn chilly, and though still a gorgeous gardenia dream, I knew I would put her aside until the warmer weather. It's just so well done - simple but breathtaking nonetheless. Of course gardenia is the star, which I don't mind in the least since it is one, if not the one, favorite note of mine. It's not overly soapy as some white florals can be, but light and just the slightest bit green. The citrus notes are very quiet, but definitely contribute to the brighter aspects of this little masterpiece. Even the packaging is lovely! This is more than just your average gardenia/white flower soliflore-ish fragrance. It is sophisticated and even a touch beguiling, so while I would definitely wear in the daytime, I can easily see wearing this in the evening, perhaps with bare shoulders, a little bit of a tan, and tropical breezes cooling the temperature just a bit! I am going on a cruise this summer, and I am positive she is coming with me! Is it wrong that I am almost as excited about the duty free perfume as I am about the cruise itself??? I am sure you all understand!

Bubbles1964

Another worthy offering from Van Cleef and Arpels, the perfume house that has the potential to bankrupt me. Fortunately this is similar to Elie Saab’s Gardenia Essence No. 2 which I bought recently. There’s enough similarity that I don’t need to purchase this one. Whew. Dodged a bullet.

Gardenia Petale is a pretty, soft gardenia approximation, with lily of the valley and jasmine notes recreating the scent of a gardenia. And doing a very good job at it. Not a big projector, after an hour or a little more, it’s a skin scent but I can easily pick up the scent without trying hard.

This can be had for around $62 on fragrencenet. So if you are into Gardenias, definitely check it out. This smells like quality to me. I really like it.

After Tuberose Gardenia and Gardenia Petale I'm starting to understand gardenia better. White florals, especially jasmine and tuberose, are among my favorite and highly appreciated perfume categories. One day I realised that I don't have anything gardenia.

And knowing after research that gardenia's odor is reconstructed by using other florals mixed with other ingredients, I'm not strict with perfumers not getting it exactly; a creation that is close to gardenia is enough for me.

Gardenia Petale is a very beautiful white floral. A very appropriate option for spring and summer, more for summer even. It easily works as a bridal perfume.

The only issue with Gardenia Petale is the lasting power. It does last for two-three hours with constant projection, but after the third hour the projection is minimal and you get occasional whiffs of the scent. It's there and not there. On the other hand it's a pure floral, it's bound not to last well.

Onto the actual scent now: basically think of Tuberose Gardenia without the tuberose. Easily a soliflore gardenia. Very feminine and sensual, green, freshly picked gardenias with their green stems. It is a clear gardenia, at least I don't perceive anything too indolic; I wouldn't have a problem with some more skank, but it's not here, don't worry. It's just enough animalic.

A bit tropical and dewy. There is also a mentholic overlay if you just pay enough attention which only adds to the whole scent. Nothing acid, nothing screechy, very wearable by all ages. It could be my idea but Gardenia Petale works in a lovely sensual way on skin, it melds nicely, becoming your skin but better, a skin-like developing facet if you will.

May I add finally that I do smell the lily of the valley too. Although it could be the green notes that are playing tricks to the nose. Lily of the valley is green too and broadly used in the re-creation of gardenia.

miss mills

This is one of the more delicate gardenias I've sampled. It has the waft of a waxed and buttery gardenia which creates a soft sillage rather than the heady wallop to the nose that many others tend to have. Mixed with jasmine and the crisp lily of the valley, this gardenia is more wistful, so pretty, so romantic, almost ethereal which doesn't come as a huge surprise when I see its creator also brewed the wonderfully ethereal Elysium.
Feisthauer has somehow managed to create a gardenia which is not suffocating yet still undeniably gardenia. She has brought out the best of this divine flower for humans to wear and enjoy. Have I found my gardenia at last? I think so! Lovely stuff.

gedlive

I'm a guy, and I realy like gardenia smell in nature.
I don't care for very feminine florals.

Is this something I could wear, could this be gender neutral ?

From the reviews it sounds like something I could wear, slightly fresh or aquous...

I found a tester for under $70, so I blind bought it.
It will be nice to have one pure floral in my collection.
Gardenia and lilly of the valley are my favorite florals.

Will update with a review, when it arrives...

OK, got my bottle, and very satisfied.
It is not very feminine. It is very floral obviously, but it is a very natural, waxy gardenia, with some jasmine. I can't really pick out the Tuberose or lilly of the valley.
It is a bit green and fresh, aquous, which keeps it gender neutral for a gardenia fragrance.
It's not very sweet, but feels a bit more sweet and coconutty, tropical, when you get to the mid.

I feel uncomfortable wearing a lot of unisex, floral fragrances, even Amouage Lyric Man, the rose felt too feminine, and I sold my bottle.
But I feel fine with Gardenia Petale, it's just like walking into a greenhouse full of Gardenias, and some other white florals.

The quality is great, and performance very good.

This is so beautiful! In the same way California Reverie was my perfect jasmine, this could be my perfect gardenia. But it doesn't last! In fact, like California Reverie, it is a skin scent from the beginning and it's gone in a few hours never really making a strong statement.
I also tried Muguet, Iris and Lys from the same line and they were equally soft in terms of presence, Cologne Noir and Orchidee Vanille a bit better.
A beautiful, natural composition that needs to be concentrated and reissued.

Alcampbell

I've been searching for a gardenia perfume (I love the flowers) and have hated all of them. Until this one. I adore this one, it smells very realistic to me with a hint of cleanness. I can't smell it after maybe 5 hours but the other day I thought it was gone and one of the girls at my kids daycare said "you smell good, like really good" so it must stick around.

renzi79

Most buttery gardenia I've met and I've tried at least 20.

MadLynne

Gardenia Petal - lovely but faint frag, fresh but not close to real flower scent. Needs to be applied generously and lasts on me max. 2-3 hours

SuzanneS

A soft gentle gardenia aura. Its enveloping haze of cashmere..nothing jarring or out of place..just a soft lulliby of jasmine and gardenia to lull someone into dreamland. Highly recommend. Id spray this on my pillow before bed.

Tigerlillian

Gardenia Petale, evocative of a gardenia soliflore -- natural, buttery, soft and velvety without ever being too heady.

The supporting notes are balanced in clever composition that accents the gardenia with warm light, cool greenery and sweet, rich floral nectar, giving this flower animation that never falls heavily.

Irrefutably luxurious yet unpretentious, Gardenia Petale's charming allure could effortlesly go from a bride's blushing decolletage, to an outdoor music festival under the stars, to a languid Sunday spent naked on white Pratesi sheets.

Soofiya

I'm not a floral girl anymore as I used to be once but I still have a nose and a heart so I still appreciate anything lovely-smelling and van cleef gardenia petale is definitely one of them
There are such a beautiful van cleefs out there, like orchid vanille, amber and rose that I was very glad to see a free sample of this one among a bunch of others with my perfume order(thank you a million times shaghayegh perfume)
Gardenia petale is all about gardenia as it's name suggests.I've tried lots of other nice gardenia fragrances(I'm looking at you hermes jeur gardenia)and found them nice but better for a white floral lover.this one is also better for a white floral lover but something in it makes me think that it's also good for me.
Oh well,I'm a conservative woman with couple of dated idea ;) one of them being:all ladies need to have a good white floral perfume and a good rose perfume.
Actually I have a lot more than one white floral,Amouage honour being best of them, but I still don't have THE white floral.something that makes me feel like a princess in white with a white flower ring around my head.only ones that give me this feeling are by Kilian good girl gone bad,Bond no 9 central west park and this adorable beauty of van cleef.I have to wait and see what destiny chooses for me since I can't have all three but van cleef gardenia petale seems to be the most affordable and easy to access one(at least where I live)
Let's stop being talkative and say what makes me love this one.it doesn't have heavyness or sharpness of some gardenia scents.it's not also too mature.actually it as gardenia's original quality.like white creamy smoothness and being bright and feminine in a sophisticated, sensual and voluptuous way but it's also simple, easy to wear and easy to like.I get a modern vibe from it which I like.still it may bore you because it's honestly more than 80% gardenia and the rest is jasmine and other white florals.I can't detect citruses or much of a green note(except gardenia's natural fresh, green undertone)
Can't say about projection and staying power but I hope it doesn't dissapoint because it's two other competitors are pretty strong
❤❤❤❤

oks-oks

This is such a beautiful true gardenia as if you are smelling inside the flower. I can get a bit of jasmine underneath. Nothing screechy, synthetic or annoying here as you can get in a lot of white flower fragrances. It also plays well. A beautiful warm a bit creamy gardenia flower.

UPD: last wear I managed to get several hours longevity of this one.The sillage is soft but it is there

pepperoniann

I always liked gardenia in perfumes. I suspected I smelled this flower in real life before, but was never sure where and when, not even mention how the real flowers looked like. This maintained so until I smelled Gardenia Petale. The moment the scent hit my nose it all came back:

I was 12. My parents would bring me and my little brother to a park by a local high school during the weekends. Those were days when the most to worry about was getting noticed by the boy I liked and not being annoyed by my little bro. There was this exclusive shrub underneath the banyan and poinciana trees just at the corner of the school building and from it bloomed these white flowers with soft, delicate and slightly wrinkled petals with the most exquisite smell. They smelled green and very heady, a little bit waxy yet very watery at the same time. It also got this "skank", a very hard to describe plant smell that only belongs to the tropics and mostly come from the white saps from cutting tropical plants. If you would sniff your fingers covered in the sap as it oxidizes in air and turns dark and sticky, you get the skank. It's a lively beautiful smell. That was a gardenia bush. And Gardenia Petale smells exactly the same as those flowers.

Now grown up, far away from families and hometown Gardenia Petale becomes my nostalgia scent. Every spray brings back memory and happy times. On this cold winter night it projects and lasts nicely to envelope me. I feel at home again.

P.s. a quick comparison: Kai is a little bit greener than this one and doesn't have the true "skank" of gardenia, and Aerin's Gardenia Ratton is saltier and infused with frangipani to smell more like a high-end beach scent. All are gorgeous but I choose the VC&A version for memory sake. Honestly there was no other way.

diamondsr4ever

I'm so glad I didn't splash out £126 on a bottle of this. And I owe a great deal of thanks to smellslikedimond for saving me an expensive mistake.
It just goes to show that one woman's olfactory heaven is another's bad dream. Not that it was a bad dream.
I was so excited to receive it I couldn't wait to try it.
I spritzed my wrists. Nothing.
I spritzed my inner elbow and gently behind the ears. Nothing.
I liberally doused myself in decolletege, behind the knees, in the air and walking through. Absolutely nothing.
So I went downstairs to speak to my official 'nose' (my husband)
What can you smell,I asked.
He sniffed the air cautiously. (I have been known to almost knock him out with some casual over-spraying before now.)
Umm, slight white flowers (said questioningly and with a somewhat bemused look on his face.)
He was OK about it being barely sniffable and sheer. It was only when I told him how much it cost and that I had been planning on buying a whole bottle he visibly turned white and sat down quite heavily on the chair.
Even spraying it on a blotter it didn't reveal any more of it's charms. As for it's being similar to Illuminum White Petals. I'm wearing that one now and if I had got the same gorgeous fragrance from VCA I would have happily spent the money on it.

pansylady

Enchantingly smoky white floral on me, like a cross between Alien and Estee Lauder's Tuberose Gardenia-

daisy25

Total disappointment for me. After all these good reviews i'd read i though that it would be the best gardenia perfume i was dreaming of. But not!On my skin smells like a plastic gardenia.

lotus and jasmine

They have finally done it! A true gardenia note, absolutely photorealistic, without error.

This is beautiful, elegant, long lasting (24 hours +) and initially has terrific sillage. It is exactly the scent of the gardenia, and I have compared Gardeia Petale to a fresh bloom from my gardenia tree. I do find that GP becomes a skin scent after about 3 hours.

VC&A even got that slightly animalistic note correct. This is stunning, and a must try for anyone who loves the scent of gardenia flowers.

I've tried many scents that claimed to have a gardenia note, this is the only one that fulfills the claim Just lovely!

EDIT: Combining GP with Michael Storer's Stephanie produces a powerhouse of a scent! Both sillage and longevity are amped up, with heavy sillage for better than 24 hours. Stephanie provides a wonderful base, and GP provides the gardenia! Perfect!

Jmalone84

I love this fragrance! It is my favourite right now- when you sniff the bottle it smells exactly like it would if you held a gardenia flower right up to your nose. Has that sweet, creamy addictive quality that the true Gardenia has- this is the most convincing mimic I have ever encountered- when I get it I think this will be my signature. Unfortunately it is so difficult to get a hold of in New Zealand except for at Smith & Caugheys or a small distributor store located only in Auckland called PriceWise. Tried it recently and the scent still remains in the sleeve of the faux leather jacket I wore that day. There's something so feminine and vintage about Gardenia- makes me think of a young beautiful woman in the fifties wearing one of them white poofy prom style dresses.

Arlene-Beatrix

Beautiful jasmine and gardenia combo. Soft, delicate, very comforting, ladylike. Sheer flowers. Great for all seasons, but it would truly bloom in warmer season.

mister_chaz

It's like a cool gardenia desert - creamy and light, absolutely beautiful gardenia scent, green and a little sweet. I do not get any synthetics here; it smells fairly natural to me, a nice break from those sharp artificial "gardenias" in the department store range. The closest perfume I can think of is Estee Lauder Tuberose Gardenia.

Plrowden

First off, I love gardenia! My grandmother raised the most beautiful bushes, laden with the smooth, heady scent that I will never forget from my childhood.

I have and love many gardenia fragrances and I also love the house of Van Cleef & Arpels, so it was with much excitement and anticipation that preceded my first spritzing of this particular scent.

Sadly, I was disappointed. The main notes to my nose are the accompanying white flowers and the "greeness" of this fragrance. I don't get the rich, deep creamy opulence of a true gardenia flower. This scent smells to me too artificially sweet, chemical and cloying. I am so sad, because I really wanted to love this one so much,

One of the most gorgeous perfumes I've smelled, but with little longevity and sillage. You'd have to be a fan of white florals, particularly gardenia, to like this one. Very little complexity, which I didn't mind, but others might. Simple and fresh.

cori.x

i love gardenia and own many gardenia perfumes, i was quite disappointed of this one. the scent lacked depth and had very weak longevity and sillage, not worth its price AT ALL. good thing i got mine in a swap, didn't pay for it myself.

Tapinview

This is a particularly well done sweet yet fresh
white floral, more natural smelling than say Lauder Tuberose White Gardenia which it closely resembles. Whatever tuberose jasmine aromachems are used do not tip over into the screechy category. I am a complete who,ha with white florals , being instantly transported to misspent hot summer nights in tropical climes by the intoxicating scent of wafting summer blooms on a warm breeze. This fume masterfully straddles the innocent daytime good clean girl and the roaming wanton night creature. I bought this at a discount just today, unsniffed, and totally recommend it, a gorgeous fume.

Kiera79

I accidentally dumped an entire sample vial of this on my arm and I can still barely smell it. What I do smell is lovely, but can't imagine paying $185 for something I can only smell if I put my arm directly under my nose. That said, this is a beautiful, creamy gardenia fragrance.

sherapop

I saved GARDENIA PETALE for last in my journey through the Van Cleef & Arpels Collection Extraordinaire, in part because gardenia perfumes vary so much, from sharp, shrill and aggressive to smooth, buttery, and creamy. It's not that I thought that this particular rendition would fall into the former category, but I guess that I'm never really sure what to expect from gardenia perfumes. I found, for example, Chanel's to be a bit hard to take.

Another reason why gardenia is never something I rush to try is simply that it has been done so many times, and already by so many so well: MARC JACOBS and KAI being two of my favorites. So how is this recent contender in the congested category of gardenia soliflores?

GARDENIA PETALE does manage to offer a new take on the gardenia, it seems to me. I find this composition to be neither sharp, shrill, and aggressive, nor smooth, buttery, and creamy! Instead, GARDENIA PETALE seems very light and aqueous to me, like gardenia petals floating gently in a sparkling pool of water out in the wilderness somewhere. It's a very nice presentation of gardenia, and I also detect quite a bit of greenish lily of the valley here, as though some tiny bells and leaves were sprinkled among the floating gardenia petals.

Well done, Van Cleef & Arpels!

RosaMilena

Fantastically beautiful gardenia on my skin. Creamy, sensuous, delicate, and clean. Warmly intimate, casual, cozy, informal. Like relaxing in a luxurious, private, tropical garden on a warm afternoon. The butterflies and bees hovering around a mass of freshly-blooming white flowers wafting their rich scent lazily through the breeze. Quite enchanting this one. On me, this is richer and yet cooler than Elizabeth Taylor’s Gardenia, cleaner than Annick Goutal’s Gardenia Passion, smoother and more rounded than Marc Jacobs Gardenia, less heady than Kai. Just gorgeous. Clean, but not soapy all the way through drydown. Exquisitely refined. For all of the gardenia lovers out there…..enjoy!

smelling_gr8

And so my search for the perfect gardenia scent is finally over. Here it is, in my hand, this tiny little decant full of blissful gardenia. It smells just like the plant I have in my pot, creamy, heady and intoxicating, pure exotic lush. If only it had a better price tag!

missk

Van Cleef & Arpels Gardenia Petale is not unlike another well-known gardenia fragrance, Kai. Both of these fragrances do well in re-creating the scent of a freshly picked bouquet of gardenias.

Gardenia Petale's simplicity is admirable. Perfumer Nathalie Feisthauer, has done much to preserve this flower's natural charm. This fragrance is creamy, smooth and 'white'; the scent of a blushing bride on her wedding day. Perhaps even angels might smell of Gardenia Petale.

White florals hold a very special place in my heart, as well as in my collection. I may not wear them very often, but I'm always relentless in my search for the perfect white floral. Gardenia Petale certainly comes close.

Nothing says "I am woman", better than a big, white gardenia perfume. I find that men are often enchanted by its feminine nature. Gardenia Petale has a gentle, pretty and smooth feel when worn on the skin. I especially enjoy wearing it during Spring, when my perfume matches my natural surroundings.

The composition is a tad linear on my skin, with the drydown being the only noticeable change in regards to the scent's development. Green and fresh gardenia petals dominate this fragrance from start to finish. A hint of white musk in the base is the only note willing enough to soften the strong gardenia accord.

Despite the simple composition, Gardenia Petale does have excellent lasting strength. I was most amazed to find this fragrance still lingering on my skin the morning after my first wearing. With such a high, and indeed shocking price tag, I don't think it totally unreasonable. You are paying for quality and an exquisite fragrance. I highly recommend.

tessture

A very linear but fresh gardenia scent. Nothing but gardenia, and not too much of that moth-ball indole, but so simple it's almost boring. Has it's place as a soliflore scent though. Probably best for tea parties, personal mood enhancement and bed time.

emiulu

I've just got it from the internet and I fell in love. There is no notes but only white summer night flowers I can notice. I smell honeysuckle mainly and when I'D been searching for a flowery scent the first flower that'd been coming into my mind was honeysuckle flower. I found my perfume at last. I can wear it all four seasons but summer nights will be more soothing and warm with this. This is an old fashioned one which is worn by noble ladies that we read in old books but there is no harm in being an old fashioned.

Trvevil

Very nice quality gardenia, but in my opinion it lacks that va va voom for me. I love white flowers very much, but this one seems to left me indifferent.

It has medium sillage that starts to fade after few hours. At the beginning it's a little bit messy and slightly old fashioned, but once it settles I can smell jasmine and gardenia, but jasmine is more intense from time to time.

It's great, natural smelling, but still, I wouldn't be buying it myself as it lacks something that would appeal to me.

Αλεξάνδρα

In my opinion, this is the truest Gardenia around. I cannot help closing my eyes when smelling it, because it feels like having the same flower in my hands! It's incredible how they succeeded to capture its aroma! I found Chanel's gardenia less sweet, but a bit lemony, having non existent lasting power and sillage. Gardenia petals morph into a pleasant accord of white flowers after a couple of hours, reminiscent of Diptyque s Olene, where although the initial gardenia's power fades giving way to jasmine tuberose tones, still it manages to keep your interest undiminished! On me it can last about 8 hours, and that compensates for its high price (125 pounds). It is such a beautiful perfume, and gardenia lovers look no further!

Sa Majeste la Rose

Maybe it is not the most original and beautiful perfume with dominant gardenia, but it is the one I can't get enough of. What is so special about it? It is not as sophisticated as Gardenia by Chanel, not as sensual as Black Gardenia by Tom Ford, not as sexy as Cruel Gardenia by Guerlain. But it is charming and cosy and wearable in any weather in any mood... An ideal perfume when one can't decide what to wear: Gardenia Petale will always be right!

Theheartoftheflower

This perfume is one of the most gorgeous I have ever smelled. It was so delicious, I could not stop smelling my arm. It's very elegant and refined, flowery and sensual. If it didn't have so damn little lasting power compared to what you pay for this, I would definetly buy this.

Cereza

As surprising as this might be...this smells 1:1 like Elizabeth Taylor Gardenia. Just the price tag is different, for this one you pay ALOT, but for ET frag you pay less than 20$. Actually I could even copy-past my review for ET frag, because it is the same - very beautiful, very sweet, but too sweet for me to wear. Gardenias for me are too sweet. I love to feel them on wrist for a while, but can't imagine to wear them daily as it might be headache inducing.

Oh, and those who do love this scent and wishes to have a bottle, but are frightened about the price - do try the Elizabeth Taylor "Gardenia". You will find that it's the same.

janudy

This reminds me of the huge gardenia tree we had outside our house when I was a kid. Every summer it would be covered by creamy white blossoms and you couldn't walk past it without taking a sniff. VC&A Gardenia Petale is that gardenia tree in a bottle. Very realistic, practically a soliflore without the synthetic edge some gardenia scents have.

That being said, while I like this, it is so uncomplicated that I'm sure there exists an equally good, cheaper alternative.

Mellyhelly

I'm not sure about this one. It smells nice gardenia, but "nice" it's not enough for a highly expensive Van Cleef & Arpels. This is another scents among the last ones I tried that smells like a fraction taken apart from big apparently messy Givenchy Amarige.
It's long lasting and not bad smelling, nor cheap in itself, but it smells cheap close to its name and price.
