THE TALE OF GLAMOUR HARE AND CHARLOTTE TORTOISE

'Look at me!' said Glamour Hare to the other animals, 'Look how sexy and elegant I can look.'
Glamour Hare began to dance through the forest ballroom. All the animals agreed that the Hare was very elegant and attractive.
Then the Hare spun back to her starting point. 'Look,' she cried, 'I'm not even sweating. I can be pretty and elegant for hours and hours.'
'Yeah, that was nice to see,' said the yawning Sleazy Lioness.
'So, who wants to challenge my beauty and class?' said the Hare. 'Do any of you here think you can beat me?'
None of the animals dared to speak.
'Look,' said the Hare, 'you're all too scared to even try?'.
'I'll try,' said Charlotte Tortoise.
Glamour Hare laughed, 'You? The clumsiest creature in the whole forest? I deserve so much better than competing with a Tortoise'.
'What's the matter?' said the Tortoise, 'Are you afraid I'll beat you?'
All the animals laughed at this and Glamour Hare was quick to cut through the growls, 'Very well then, Charlotte. We'll see who's the most graceful...and then we'll see who ends up laughing.'
'Okay, my dear,' said Charlotte Tortoise. 'Let's get ready then and show off our elegance tomorrow at 5:00 sharp'.
The next day, all the animals gathered in the clearing very early to watch the preparations. Glamour Hare went shopping at the mall for a nice designer outfit, shining new shoes and a new expensive perfume flask. But there was so much to choose from... she was just taking a lot of time. Anyway, she would be on time for the pageant for sure.
'Are they ready yet?' asked the Sleazy Lioness.
'It's hard to tell with Tortoises,' said Trixie Badger. 'I don't see Glamour anywhere, but Charlotte seems to be arriving'.
'Is she? Really?' asked the Lioness.
And indeed she was. Charlotte was wearing a nice, comfortable outfit, and sprayed herself with her trusty Revlon's fruity-floral-oriental called "Charlie Gold". Everyone nodded convincingly at her scent and looks.
'Charlotte Tortoise, are you ready to start?' asked Jeannie Crow. 'I mean Glamour Hare seems a bit late... But there's no reason for you not to start impressing us!...'.
'Don't worry,' said Charlotte Tortoise. 'She'll certainly catch me on the dance floor. I'll even try to speed up a bit. You'll see.'
The crowd of animals watched impressed. Charlotte was well prepared. She slowly made her way to the clearing and executed some well-trained but safe dance steps. She even looked almost attractive and elegant. Her scent was quite convincing as it was feminine enough, mildly sweet and with pleasant notes of caramel and woody accords. At the end of the demonstration, all the animals applauded. And Glamour Hare was still nowhere to be seen.
In fact, the Hare arrived a minute before the end of the Tortoise show. She arrived at great speed wearing a marvellous designer dress, four expensive-looking high-heeled shoes and scenting the surrounding air with a classy musky-civet-castoreum "Extract De Parfum". It was just too much for Sleazy Lioness' keen senses. While everyone was looking at Charlotte Tortoise, the Lioness pranced, jumped and caught Glamour Hare...
'It's not fair,' wailed Glamour Hare, 'it's not fair.' But no one was listening to the Hare.

Quite similar to Elizabeth Taylor Diamonds and Rubies but not as good since the later is more well-blended. Still Charlie Gold is a sweet fruity ambery fragrance. It doesn't smell bad but does feel a bit synthetic, kinda smells like those chewing vitamin tablets I had as a kid. I don't know why but Revlon perfumes seem to have an oddly oily texture, it smells oily to me. I only have Ciara and Charlie Gold tho so I might be biased.

Marta_Regina

Beautiful, warm, classical, elegant. Embracing, sweet but not in a typically gourmand way. With a sparkling touch of vintage notes like an old diamond ring. Very close to skin and intimate. For me comforting and heartwarming.

MiniMena

I used to wear the original Charlie in my teens. Now I'm revisiting it as well as some of its flankers. When I sprayed this I knew I had smelled a similar perfume before. Turns out it is almost an exact dupe ( in my opinion) of Versace Woman , which I love. Both of these fragrances are made within a few years of each other so I can understand why the similarities. Several of the notes are the same also. Beautiful ambery floral fragrance.

This was a blind purchase, and at first spray, I HATED this perfume. It was brash and smelled like the ubiquitous pink soap you use in public restrooms, very flat and synthetic. It felt like the scent had stained my wrists and I tried to wash it off to no avail. It was super disappointing; my nose didn't pick up any spices or ambers, only sickly sweet bathroom-y floral. BUT, I tried it again two days later, and I'm not sure if it needed to settle or something, but the scent had dramatically changed. It opened with sweet stone fruit and a bit of a gourmand citrus, followed by warm spices, powdery florals, and finished with a creamy vanilla resin. On my skin, the notes settle together cleanly and the stone fruit and citrus dissipates, although a liqueur like sweetness remains. The longevity is fairly short, which is a bummer, but for such an affordable fragrance I don't mind reapplying. My entry into perfume as an adult was a vintage bottle of Shalimar, and there's definitely a similarity between the two. Anyways, if you hate Charlie Gold at first spray, let it sit for a day or two and give it another chance because it could surprise you!

@swedishmilk15:
It's the same scent, only different concentration.

I recommend Charlie Gold eau Fraiche to anyone who likes the original Gold. It's the fresh & juicy springtime sister & I love it just as much.

During a house-sitting weekend, I found this gorgeous fragrance in the bottle as pictured in this page. The liquid was orange-amber-honey color. There was still plenty of juice left. The owners of the big house were not home for 2 weeks and would not noticed I had sprayed this perfume on myself. That's when I first came to love it and had to go out and buy it so I did. Bought it on Amazon. The initial spray is a sweet citrus and peach or apricot. It is not fresh and perfumy in a typical citrus on top scent way. Instead it is instantly warm and exotic. I can't compare this to any perfume per say except maybe a hybrid of Black Pearls by Elizabeth Taylor and Tresor by Lancome. The spiciness settles in almost right away. I am smelling cloves, cinnamon and honey. It's syrupy and sweet but spiced up a lot. The caramel note is so delicious. I had never experienced caramel in a scent like this before. It's so well blended with the florals. The florals that are most prominent to my nose is the jasmine and the violet. I don't pick up on a rose note. This is a very spiced up violet and jasmine. The jasmine is well paired with the Oriental notes of sandalwood, cedar, amber, resins, spices and clove. The perfume lingers on for hours and becomes dryer after 5 hours. It is then when it turns into a musk and woodsy aroma. The musk is warm and very cozy and feels like a perfect winter scent for keeping warm in your coats and scarves. Casual and very relaxed and so it's good for indoor house parties in winter time. I would peg this as mature 30 and up. I think this is unisex because it's more dark spice than feminine floral. The fragrance has good projection and sillage. Smells great in the air as you walk into it. I also feel that this is meant for spraying once in a specific part - the hair or down the neck/bosom. There's nothing like this out ther today so you will receive compliments and curious questions like 'what's that?". Smells so good. If you like spicy florals ambers and woodsy scents this is a gorgeous intro to Oriental perfume. I absolutely adore it!!

Loca del Tó

I didn't know this in the 90's, when I was young. I used to gravitate between Loulou, White Musk by The Body Shop, Don Algodón, Maderas de Oriente and Maja. So I have no memories associated with this. That said, I recently came across a bottle of this and another of Charlie Red. I discovered Charlie Blue about ten years ago, and I love it, but never before came across any other Charlie since them. I can't tell if I know the original Charlie since I have never found a bottle of that and I don't remember any family member keeping a bottle of it in their shelves but it's possible that I smelled it on someone else when it was fashionable.

Well, Charlie Gold is a remarkable perfume. It's cheap as chips, but does not smell cheap at all. At first spray, I felt a little overwhelmed: the synthetic, heavy peach mixed with hairspray scared me. But after a while, it calmed down, and it became a beautiful fruity-floral oriental, just a little bit sweet, not gourmand at all, but classy and vintage, clean and soapy. Its flowers not a bit indolic, nothing animalic in it.
If you hate as much as I do the syrupy fumes of today, don't be afraid, this is not one of them at all. It's sweetness won't give you diabetes.
I can't believe this is from 1995: this does not smell like the perfumes in vogue those years. This smells so 80's.
Also, immediately after the heavy peach has calmed down, this reminded me of some shampoo from my childhood. i remember my mother showering me when I was five and pouring on my head some shampoo that smelled like this. Was it some old Geniol shampoo? I cannot tell. This also smells of cosmetics. Vintage cosmetics, lovely and powdery.
Also this reminds me of Trèsor, JP Gaultier Classique, and also Gucci Rush, with it's gigantic plasticy peach but whithout the slutty feel. But don't be fooled: this is not an 80's powerhouse. At first spray this seems to have an enormous sillage but it's short lived. In fact it soons becomes a tame little perfume, classy but unobtrusive and office-friendly. The perfume lingers as a skin scent for four or five hours. But this is so cheap that you will not regret having to reapply it from time to time. Anyway, I would not dare to wear this in warmer times. I'm afraid this will not be wearable in summer. This is cozy and warm, and I find it more appropriate for autumn and winter, under 20°C.
I can see why some people say this is a grandma's smell, this is not your typical sugary fruitchouli, the cloying tooth-ache inducing scents that girls wear these days. This does not smell like you bathed yourself in sticky syrup. This is classy, a true perfume, not a girls candy.

Charlie Silver & Charlie Gold are my favorite of all the Charlie’s. Charlie Silver is fresh, clean and timeless. Great in spring and summer. Cheapie that mixes well with fresh scented body sprays and lotions. I like to mix with Bath & Body Works products to help the scent last longer!

Grimdeux

Reminds me of a Strawberry Shortcake doll I had in the 80s named Peach Flush. Light, bright, a bit hair spray.

sethro77

The immediate opening for the first minutes is a bit harsh... But after one minute, the notes of this come out powerful and pleasant. For me, plum, peach, amber, and freesia dominate the scent... It is fairly linear until the far far dry down when the sandlewood finally announces itself, and it becomes a slightly sweet, amber, sandlewood scent with a touch of florals. I find this fragrance to be well rounded and timeless. My sister wore this when I was a kid, and it first came out, and I remember always loving the fragrance.... As an adult I love finally being allowed to wear "female" fragrances that I loved smelling as a kid, and teen, so I always have a bottle of this.

I get where some people say that this fragrance has an "old woman" smell.... The musk gives this a slightly powdery characteristic, that can give that vibe... But it is not a strong vibe. You have to really search for it. To me this fragrance is very youthful (albeit dated, since it smells like a 1990's fragrance). The fragrance is a bit too playful and bright to be "old lady" to me.

Definitely recommend giving this fragrance a shot if you are a 1990's kid and want some nostalgia.

Deliza1997

It is surprisingly modern smelling for a 90s cheap fragrance. It is spicy fruity and resinous with a subtle sweetness. The sandal note appears very late in the dry down. It is from a era when most of the inexpensive scents were either heavy florals or babershop so I will give it a credit. Up-close the opening definitely is synthetic but in the air it’s gorgeous. It smells so classy and it costs just 8 bucks. Performance is not great, long lasting but projects poorly but you can compensate that with overspraying. I love it.

Lumoava

I wear this around the year but I like it in autumn and winter (Christmas!) especially. This and Burberry Brit edp are my chilly season perfumes.

Chrisandra

I love it! I discovered that when I layer it with Pascal Morabito's Sultan Or, the result is amazing!
Inexpensive and hight quality frag, made in Spain.
Charlie Gold was about 5 euro, and Sultan Or, about 12, so for a total of 17 euro, I get a great delicious fruity, floral and slightly spicy combo which lasts up to 9 hours on my skin.

Huoxie

It's been like inside joke in my family that I like inappropriate perfume, in sense I like incense-y, balmy, spicy perfume...in humid hot tropical weather. I love Youth Dew, which I got from my late grandma (she got it from one of my aunt, took one sniff and smile politely, later secretly gave it to me), and did bag my husband because of that perfume.
For me, Charlie Gold is very lite version of the spicy perfume that I crave to wear daily but because I didn't want to cause massive headache to everyone around me, I settle with. My husband love Charlie Gold on me, which somehow smell soft on my skin as long as I don't overspray.

Akbarfaisal

Charlie gold is fantastic, the expensive and classy feel doesn't feel like a cheap perfume....in the opening it has a touch of apricot and peach, in the middle note phase there is a mixture of flowers, and at the base note is sweet vanilla or a sweet woody I think it's cedar, sandalwood or cinnamon...all covered with a little powdery....suitable for formal events, and of course worn in cooler and colder weather

goldiloks

Can anyone advise if this is similar to Coty Exclamation (which is often compared to Tresor)?

DariaFrancesca74

How can you not appreciate the potential of this feminine fragrance!? Of the Charlie line produced by Revlon it is undoubtedly the most complex, with a surprising olfactory evolution. A blend where amber, warm and sensual notes harmoniously coexist immersed in balanced fruity and floral notes with sweet caramelized accords that pamper the soul without stunning it. A fragrance with a kaleidoscopic olfactory pyramid, worthy of being experienced.

GoodVibrations

Diamonds and Rubies Lite.
Same parent company.
All the rouge snuggly class of Elizabeth Taylor Diamonds and Rubies without causing headaches, causing others to faint, or lingering for a month in a room where it has been sprayed.
Charlie Gold also has a hint of semi-sweet fruit like apricot that gives it an even more friendly appeal.
I have previously compared ET Diamonds and Rubies favorably to Hermès Rouge in essence, except Hermès Rouge doesn’t have that signature Sophia Grojsman fuzzy angora sweater feeling that Diamonds and Rubies has. Charlie Gold gives a more slender impression of Diamonds and Rubies as well as Hermès Rouge, with just a hint of the texture of Diamonds and Rubies.
Of the three, Charlie Gold is the least intimidating, and of the three it’s the one that won’t cause anyone to lose their appetite by evoking the feeling of having eaten a bottle of perfume. Yes, I love Rouge and D&R, but to smell them is to eat them. Charlie Gold is pleasantly non-invasive by contrast.
Charlie Gold doesn’t smell cheap, it’s not overbearing, it’s very wearable, and its overall character is gently reminiscent of a distinctly classy, rare Hermès gem. The extended dry down is classic, chic, and better than the dry downs of many perfumes that cost a hundred dollars more, but I should mention that I detect a slight chemical smell in the dry down. It’s still an amazing value.
Charlie Red is piquant, almost tart, and fresh.
Charlie Gold is softer and sweeter.

MaudeScent

Hello early ninedays!

If you like(d) Zazou, JPG Classique, Trésor, Poême and more of those apricot early nineties fragrances, then this is the one for you. For me this was love at first sniff.

It’s not one of those major sillage bombs but it certainly lasts long. Projection is of “hanging closely around you” amount.

During the nineties this one was worn by many of my friends who could not afford Poême or Classique (very expensive for high school students with a job at the local diner). Nowadays this one would be outstanding as no one actually wears this as their signature scents.

I love it. Just ordered it and I keep sniffing my wrist. Six hours later and I can still defect it.

annasarahr121

Just noticed this is my second review:
Charlie Gold is a very 90's powerhouse fruity amber in the style of Sophia Grojsman, though she did not actually blend this one. With lots of spicy cloves and cinnamon, Charlie Gold has lots of rich amber and spices along with the apricots, peaches, and plums. While it is slim on the floral notes, I do get a bit of soapiness. The sweetness of caramel comes through, but it's not an overpowering candy note due to all the spiced fruits along with an almost salty note (as antfarm below noticed); it almost has an aspect of mulled wine or cider. And it has a similar powdery quality that a few reviewers have pointed out is similar to the Sophia Grojsman creation, Elizabeth Taylor Diamonds and Rubies; both perfumes are warm and comforting and have lots of cinnamon and peach, but D & R is MUCH more rosy -- a true floral -- unlike Charlie Gold. Charlie Gold is a really warm, enveloping scent that's great for cooler weather (65 degrees Fahrenheit or lower). Its longevity is really good; I could still smell it 7 or so hours after I'd sprayed (unlike Charlie Blue, which smells great, but doesn't last). On top of all this greatness, Charlie Gold is a total bargain. But you definitely have to love an older style of powdery, warm, enveloping spiced fruits to enjoy this scent. However, if you enjoy classics like Diamonds and Rubies, Black Pearls, and Bob Mackie Mackie, you will probably like or even love Charlie Gold.

madonnatella

this is a hell of a perfume ! I feel it as a crossing between the (luckily) four times stronger GIORGIO and the exquise CHANEL No 5. but then my story with CHARLIE is still more peculiar, and thus also with CHARLIE GOLD. I love THIS perfume in its own right. it is smashy, flashing, NY, LA and LV together. as a European (Dutch) person I have always loved American perfumes. this isn't either a 'reformulation' of the first, original CHARLIE. yes I have known the original perfume well. I am from 1957 and started ca. 1974 to dabble with perfume (Chanel no 5) and the 1980s were coming. now THAT was my decade. and only the loudest hookers of the lot I loved, along with my mom. Giorgio, Poison, Obsession, Coco, Opium (1977), Knowing, Youth Dew, Bijan, Moschino parfum de toilette. CHARLIE was from the 70s with tons of oakmoss. but that always stayed one of my favorites. if you compare the ingredients lists of both CHARLIE GOLD and CHARLIE, they are totally different. yet they had the same impact. this is a mind lifter. I can (theoretically) imagine someone who hates such perfumes. that is a pity but not my problem. you can clearly smell the peach and apricot, amber, cinnamon and plum. Sandelwood and roses, jasmine and cloves. for me it is a revisiting of the 1980s, but with also a reminiscence to the original which perfume also had an enormous sillage. sultry, bewitching, heady perfumes make me happy. it is as simple as that !

Perfumefreak30

Sweet fruity love it great summer smell this is good for any age I feel like anyone like it and it's a safe blind buy

Perfumefreak30

Differently not for a teenager unless your a grown up teenager..at first I was like this not gonna smell good then I sprayed let it set and let me tell you sister! This is sweet caramel smell. It's very classy

ShaimaWay

I bought this perfume for purely emotional and nostalgic reasons; I'd smelled it as a child, I'd just lost my mom a few months ago and she had this fragrance and bought many bottles to give away to family and friends as presents, and I thought it would remind me of better times. When I first sprayed it I almost gagged! It was horrible! What was I thinking?! It was super screechy and overpowering. I put it on the back shelf and left it there for a few weeks. Fast forward to today and for some reason unbeknownst to me I picked it up and sprayed it on my wrist... AND I WAS MIND BLOWN! It's so beautiful. I can smell the peach, the rose, the jasmine and all the other notes and the dry down is to die for! I guess it just needed to stand and macerate, and mature for a while. This is a beautiful, seductive perfume. I'm never going to doubt you again, mama!

Fatima1219

This starts off really nice and amber-y. As you spray it, Charlie Gold will put you in a very pleasant mood as you are encapsulated with beautiful notes of: amber, freesia, and sandalwood. Although not listed, my nose picks up a very soft cashmere note as well. I decided to pair this with Bath & Body Works Cashmere Snowflakes body lotion to place emphasis on the beautiful cashmere note I was picking up. The two complement each other beautifully. This was a successful blind buy for me; I am a life long fan of the House of Revlon. Charlie Gold is sexy, alluring, and sophisticated. I can see it working in all seasons--day or night. The sillage is pleasant and very aromatic. It starts off as a power house, but in an hour or it dries down to a skin scent. I am a collector, so skin scents and re-applying does not bother me personally, but because of those reasons, I do not deem Charlie Gold as a safe blind buy.

Sophisticated sweetheart

I was really keen to sanple this because if these mixed and informative reviews and wanted to give in my opinion. I am aware I am a teenager with very imature taste but unfortunately for me the florals were incredibly strong in a mature librarian way, not favourable to me but I understand others may find this review helpful!!

amyaz

Ugh no. Smelled this today, it almost has a lipsticky or old cosmetic powder vibe. Doesn't remind me of Amber Romance at all personally and would choose that over this any day.

CatOwned

For the price this is pretty amazing quality. It smells similar to VS Amber Romance, but less sweet.

unicorn1

I had to get this after reading the reviews and seeing how some say it's similar to Tresor, which I love. This does indeed remind me of Tresor, as well as Elizabeth Taylor's Diamonds and Rubies. It is a warm and spicy fragrance but for some reason it fades quite quickly on my skin, which surprised me as I thought being old school it would have been a beast of a perfume. It lasts longer on my clothes but I do wish it lasted longer as well as projected better on my skin. There is no information on the bottle or the box to tell me when this may have been made or what it's expiry date is. It is still a very lovely fragrance.

Human person

Just received this in the mail. I took the bottle out and couldn't help but smile at how old timey this bottle looked. As I was beginning to take in its charming gaudiness, I stopped in horror and then bursted out laughing.

It has the whole information section, I'm talking, directions for use, ingredients, manufacturers, dates, batches etc. All the details that are usually mentioned on the outer cardboard box, printed on its back, in black. Oh my god! XD I guess they decided to switch things up and "innovate" by putting the whole information tag on the bottle itself. The bottle that I saw in the videos and images was a beautiful (though cheaply made), classic, simple transparent bottle. Mine is all kinds of ugly. XD
It's a very recent batch (01/22) so this is a recent "update" I guess. My god!

Now that I'm done ranting, let's talk about it's scent. It's a very old school, sweet, powdery, apricot scent. I don't get any other notes listed. It smells Very inoffensive. I like it. It reminds me of some hair product that I used to use back in the day but I can't pin point what exactly it is. However, it's smell is VERY VERY VERY weak. I mean disappearing within half an hour of spraying generously.

May be the new batches have been diluted/reformulated. It may be that this one just needs to sit in the closet for a few months and mature. Idk. It's not bad for the price. All in all, I'm glad I bought this. I got a good laugh and a decent perfume at $7 which is more than I can ask for.

LSAUG

Charlie Gold reminds me of today's reformulation of Lancome's Tresor, a perfume I dislike. The peach in here (and in the reformulation of Tresor) smells rotten. The florals in Charlie Gold have a shampoo quality to them but not a nice expensive shampoo a cheap dollar store shampoo smell. Charlie Gold is also sickly sweet and in a very headache inducing way. Even if I liked this perfume and I do not like it at all I could never wear it because it is giving me a headache. Very cheap smelling. I get no caramel or cinnamon w/ this fragrance, just a disgusting chemical sweetness. Thank goodness it only cost me $7.95. I will try this out on my little sister she might like it. If not, my husband can use it for the downstairs bathroom as an air freshener since he likes the smell of it.

Lumoava

I just love this!
Recently I noticed my few years old bottle had turned a bit so I ordered a new one in Eau Fraiche strenght (that one you can spray more generously). Why does it only come in huge size?!

To me, it doesn't smell dated, low quality or like autumn/winter perfume only. It's warm and little spicy, yes, but summer appropriate too.

I'm not good at detecting and describing notes but this is just the right mixture of floral, powdery and gourmand to my taste.

SweetJhane

I wasn’t expecting to like this as much as I do. It was a blind buy based on reviews here. It’s definitely “loud.” It has a certain thin drugstore quality in the first 15 minutes till it settles down and turns into a very pretty, warm, sweet, peachy-apricot, powdery amber perfume that’s a bit addictive. If Paris Hilton’s Gold Rush is something you like, Charlie Gold is similar, but more powdery, which I love. This lasts about 6 hours - spraying on clothes, too, boosts longevity and sillage. I’m very impressed. Unbelievable quality at a ridiculously bargain price. All I can say is Wow!

Edit: The longevity on Charlie Gold is much better than I first experienced. It’s still with me 8-9 hours after applying. I don’t get spices and roses, but rather an overall softly sweet and amber fragrance. It’s simple and pretty. There’s a brightness that lasts throughout, which is cheerful and uplifting. CG is a very easy reach for a casual or every day scent when you want to smell nice without any drama. I really like it for middle of the week work days!

Edit 5/20/23 - I’ve become very attuned to tobacco notes, even if they are not listed. I’ve really fallen in love with Charlie Gold and I get a fairly pronounced fresh tobacco note in it. It’s hitting me like the offspring of Joop! Le Bain and Ciara, and the stepsister of Toujours Moi. It lasts forever on my skin. It’s 90 degrees, humid, and overcast here in the subtropical South and CG is just gorgeous! It’s most definitely not just an autumn/winter scent. Love love love it!

Rozalina

I thought I’d love this based on the notes, but it just smells like an aldehydic 90’s drugstore cheapie. It smells like a lighter, somewhat less offensive version of the current formulation of Victoria’s Secret Rapture, or Bijan.

Holli

This smells exactly like Nahema in the newer bee bottle. It might not to anyone else, but worth a try as it does to me. Please leave my comment so that people have a cheapie to try.

Vabeachtiff

I'm over 40 and always wished my mom wore Charlie from the commercials back in the day. Welp, was breezing through Burlington and found a fat bottle for $5.99. Now I had my chance at it. The cashier looked at me crazy, but I told her "I've just GOT to try this."
Got in the car and put the windows down in case of the "vintage loudness" that may occur.
That was NOT the case! This is soft, warm, ambery and enveloping. This screams autumn. Just a few sprays will keep you smelling great for hours.
This was blind buy perfection. I love this as a part of my collection and added Charlie Red as well.

coffeefifofum

Before I get to my rave review let me mention that my Gen Z daughter hates Charlie Gold. She says it's "too much". I disagree, and I think instant Beastmode and Loud wouldn't be the best descriptors, but it has a HUGE scent bubble. I went nose blind to it fairly quickly, then I'd walk into a room I'd been in that still had it lingering in the air and Boom! There's Charlie Gold again.

I decanted some in the bathroom half an hour ago and down the hall and around the corner I can clearly smell it. This scent was designed so that when Ms. Jenny went through the register line at the Piggly Wiggly the checker would know Ms. Jenny hadn't left the house unfinished. I don't remember smelling this much in the 90's, but I was in the south then and it has a very southern vibe to me. Not sure if that's unconscious memory or attributable to the perfume, but for me it's undeniably there.

If you've ever had homemade spiced peaches that haven't been over sweetened, this is scent is reminiscent of that plus flowers in the house. It's a cozy, warm, friendly, floral, and despite the spices and flowers I'd never describe it as a Floriental. This is a retro All American scent. Ponytails and denim as easy but stylish choices when headed out to watch the game at someone's house. A dailywear that could go to dinner, too.

mirrorghost

this starts very fruity with some amber and sandalwood. i get a lot of peach and hint of apricot and plum. it definitely smells 90s to me. it's pretty-a peachy amber with floral hints. it smells very familiar but i cannot place the perfume that it reminds me of.

Charlie Gold is Ciara's lighter sister. You can tell they are family, yet different individuals. Where Ciara is deep, smoky and more serious, Charlie is airy, sweet and a bit fruity. Looking at the notes you might expect a gourmand fragrance. Personally, I wouldn't call it that. It has fruit, yes and there is a slight caramel sweetness, but it doesn't smell realistically like food. The spices and fruit are blended together with all the other notes. It is a real perfume, made to be perceived in its entirety.
The sandalwood does a nice job of unifying the different notes and adds a beautiful softness, together with musk and iris there is powder, but not overwhelmingly much. Sitting on top of this very affordable fragrance are rose and jasmine. There's a freshness that keeps Charlie from being heavy despite everything that's going on in this quite complex and well rounded perfume. I mean, you can tell it's not an expensive perfume, truth be told, but at a price of around 5 EUR it's just great value.

This review is for the most recent formulation of Charlie Gold EDT.

On to the deliciousness...this is thick, rich, ambery, opulent, and nearly edible. It's salty, warm, and vintage in feel. It reminds me of wearing a golden beaded necklace where you can plonk the huge beads into some sort of custard liqueur-like fondue and then eat them. It is delectable and different from anything else out there.

I did order another bottle of this in hopes that it won't have a strong blast of alcohol. Will update this review after I receive it. UPDATE: My other bottle of Charlie Gold came in, and it did not have the strong alcohol blast like my previous bottle. Instead, the alcohol was replaced with a warm, comforting ambery powderiness. This is so gorgeous but so warm and glamorous that I could not imagine myself wearing it except for in the dead of winter in a fuzzy vintage mohair sweater with some gold modernist earrings. I'm glad I gave this another chance. It's a beauty.

Noelanii

Just perfect in cold weather - warm, balmy, golden; not at all heavy and syrupy like it is in warm weather. It gets close to a Kim Kardashian Pure Honey type of scent in the cold, with that high sweet honey note shining through, but Charlie has winter spices and ripe fruits added.

With apologies to all those who can make this one work for them:

I've had this perfume for over 2 years now, and I still keep it around and can't quite make myself bin it. I feel as though there must be something in there that I'm missing, but I just get this heavy wooden-something smell that persists throughout the time it lasts, (and oh boy, does it last!). I've tried layering it - nope. I've tried just one spray - nope. Always overbearing and makes me feel slightly nauseous. I can't even tolerate it as a bathroom spray. Seems a shame, as I love the Blue and the Red versions.

Maybe today is the day to finally get rid of it.

forallinose

Wow. This is unbelievably good for the price (3.80 euros). Smells like a much more expensive fragrance. The dry down is very Jo Malone-ish on me.

desturner866

I do not get gourmand from this at all. Amber-y fruity floral with a slight soapy, shampoo-y quality.

serje.allen.3

This is my second revieuw of fruty gourmand fragrance .....this is all about apricot and peaches in the top notes...the top and mid notes are like peaches and apricots stewed in cinamon and amber with a hint of spice..and there you have the wonderfull drydown that is all woody and caramel

celebrity89

This reminds me a teensy bit of my beloved and discontinued Revlon Intimate (the 80s version, hourglass bottle, Cindy Crawford ads). That was a beautiful warm and lush treasure.

Mellyhelly

I'm wearing it now after many months, because I was in search of some old good unsugared cinnamon bark smell, but I should have remembered how complex Charlie Gold is! Yes, there is cinnamon buried somewhere, but it doesn't pop out.
Charlie Gold is a mystery.
Today, of all things, Charlie Gold smells animalic verging towards the beast, very strong in the opening then it fades.
My bottle seems still fresh and it's not very old.
Other than that Charlie is a little cheeky joke of a perfume: it smells slightly different everytime.
Sometimes it hits me with the gorgeous old school plum.
One week later it is rose and cloves and generally always ambery when it dries down.
It must be the incredible number of declared notes. We are not always the same, so each time we pick something different while Charlie Gold stays the same (and probably sneering).
It smells elegant. Even better, it smells wannabe-rich in a very old school manner.
This is the essence of the '90s! Complicated, ever-changing, ladylike oriental-spicy-sweet-fruity-floral and cheap!
It smells cheap. I cannot cheat. It's also prone to give you a headache.
This is the perfume that your mom used to put into her trolley in a supermarket for later gift to an older neighbour.
It's good. It's confusing for the nowadays perfumista. Is it a new niche?
I don't get the similarity to Amarige Mariage, but I get it with Realm and Kashaya.
As a matter of "vibe" I could put Charlie Gold on an imaginary line well below 24 Faubourg.
They don't smell alike but they both give out that heavy white floral and amber that makes an exuberant ladylike golden style from the '90s.
Remember: that lady is still alive and she deserves your kindness.
Charlie Gold is much thicker anyway. The caramel and apricot make it sooo sweet without being sugary nor gourmand. Its sweetness is very outdated. It becomes tender when it dries.
Worn with sense it can be gentle, more than 2 or 3 sprays you will make others faint.

drdgs

Charlie Gold is a nice spicy floriental that is extremely good value for money. Which is lucky as I had to buy a new bottle as my 19 year old son liberated me of mine as he loves wearing it too. I mostly use this on weekends for tasks like grocery shopping when I don't want to use up my "good" scents.

mldaleali28

I just bought this because I saw it compared to Amarige Mariage. I have Charlie on my left wrist and Mariage on the right one and I wonder if those 18 people who voted these two as similar have ever smelled Mariage. 😂 It’s ridiculous, there’s absolutely no similarity between them, nothing at all. Charlie starts with a synthetic apricot, now I have amber, some roses, aldehydes and violet. It smells cheap and soapy. Well, it was £3.50 so there’s no loss, I’m just amused by the ridiculous comparison.

Anna Komnene

This is a vintage ambery rose on me. I don't like how the rose persists throughout given that i was going for a gourmand scent. It translates kind of cheap and non descript on my skin, but nothing unbearable. It's one of these perfumes that evoke no feelings or images.

brightsun2205

I used to receive this rollerball as a gift. That was like a spicy fruit bomb to the point that I avoid applying it a lot as this scent can annoy others.

who.am.i.you

This reminds me of Victoria Secret's Amber Romance in the dry-down. Smells nice, but not a favorite. Definitely smells "gold" or "amber".

Bigsly

Recent, EdT formulation. There are fresh but not crisp florals at first, and also a Mitsouko-like quality. It's almost like a few different scents come and go for several hours. There is an ambery and a gourmant scent too, and the fresh florals turn into sweet florals. After several hours it's a soft sweet/spicy/woody scent. Unlike other Charlies, it's projection isn't especially strong, though the sillage is certainly good enough for a $7/100 ml scent. Longevity is excellent.

indiglo

The first couple of times I wore this it didn't really speak to me. Then the third time, wow. It opened up and was so beautiful. I get varying experiences, today is great again. I don't know why it varies, but the times I love it I seem to be getting more floral blooming and mixing with the caramel and other notes, a delightful combination.

Mystères du Château de Dé

The fruit is very strong in this.

Seaworthy

I found this bottle shoved to the very back of my perfume shelf and decided to spray some on before bed last night. Warm, sweet, comforting, perfect for a cold winter night. I smell mainly apricot, peach, caramel and amber. Yum! I woke up this morning and I could still smell it strongly on my arm and nightgown sleeve! Impressive for such a cheap fragrance purchase. I think I had totally dismissed this fragrance when I used it on a hot summer day and I found it to be cloying and almost nauseatingly artificial then. Not so on a cold night! It is beautiful! Not necessarily complex or unique but certainly not as artificial smelling in the cold as it was in the heat. I am finding over and over again that if you do not like a fragrance at first save it for a totally different weather/temperature condition and you may be surprised, who knows you may even fall in love.....

dennisisahypocrite

This is one of those perfumes that gives me a headache. I really don't see myself wearing it at all - to me it feels dated and unpleasant. Even on a cold day, it's still offensive, harsh and makes me feel like an old lady. I do think a man could pull it off though, strangely enough.

The fragrance does last quite a long time, which to me is not great due to its headache inducing power. It's a blind buy and it cost me $8, so I just threw it away. I simply could not handle it any longer - it couldn't even be used as a toilet air freshener, which is what I like to do with perfumes I dislike. I put it in the trash can and never looked back (until now when I share with you my unpleasant experience).

anitasaastamoinen

Does anyone know who is the nose behind this fragrance? It´s surprising, how much I enjoy this cheap bargain.

ALC555

This is a nice spicy unisex cologne. Still relevant in 2020.

anitasaastamoinen

This is a great fragrance from the 90s. I bought Charlie Gold by Revlon some time ago ago. Charlie Gold is warm and lovely, even addictive, I guess it's that kind of fragrance that I was hoping Dalissime would be to me and I dislike Dalissime. The price is one good reason more to love this. This lasts about 4 hours on my skin and considering that this is an EDT, that's good. I will keep this in my collection. I have also Charlie Red and I like it and will wear it more in the spring and summer, but I prefer Charlie Gold. This is better on colder seasons I guess.

Malita6623

I love Charlie Gold, the first notes are very strong, but then after drying is lovely caramel and woods. Disco vibe!
Sillage is heavy and longevity 3 hours in my case but continues until next day.

gmr1967

I love, love, love this fragrance. And I admit that in my collection I have two packages for fear that it will be discontinued and not find it on sale anymore. Pure 90's style, an opulent perfume with a respectable olfactory pyramid. But this unexpectedly unobtrusive opulence is realized in a fragrance of unexpected and long-lived duration and sillage. Ideal as a good night fragrance for me this fragrance is comforting and a warm, enveloping and reassuring cuddle.

Lumoava

So lovely on it's own and also layers great with Pink Sugar!
But why is it only available in a 100 ml bottle, I think I have to stock up but I'm afraid the huge bottles will turn before finishing them.

Lanka

It is super strong during the first hour or so, but the dry down is soft, yummy and sweet.

FragrantMama

I am one of those people that loves the Charlie line. All of the scents in the line have their own unique twist and this one is no exception. I love the sweet yet woodsy smell that Charlie Gold has. I don't know if I love this line so much because it feels so nostalgic and reminds me of my childhood or because I just love the scents. They are so cheap but they all smell good.

SailorV

Don't let the opening fool you with this one. Charlie Gold starts out quite old-school, like a typical peachy 90s floral. Think of something like Chloe Narcisse, but sourer and less appealing. When I first smelled it I was really surprised because I expected caramel and spices.

Then it changes to a sunny, happy spiced stonefruit scent. Slowly but surely the cinnamon takes the center stage, and in the end, the lovely caramel note comes out. It's smooth and not as sticky-sweet as many caramel perfumes today. The peach and apricot never really leave, and their lush and juicy texture contrasts so well with the powdery sandalwood and dry cinnamon. It all becomes so warm, comforting and beautiful after a while.

So, if you sample this, give it some time. And consider that the tester bottles for scents like this one often stand around for a while on the bottom shelves of the drugstore, so the topnotes might be a little off. The drydown is wonderful, you can't find many fragrances this good for the 5-10€ they're charging for Charlie Gold.

Jac401

I never used this back in the day, but I'm on a 'memory lane' trip with perfumes at the moment, and it was only £3.99 on Amazon, so why not?

Sprayed it on soon after it arrived and....?

Very flat smell, somewhat musty and sour. Hmm. No flowers, no fruit, no spices. Hope this isn't a mistake.

Tried again this morning and it was like a totally different perfume from the day before!! I got orange, juicy peach, plum, slightly spicy/sweet, but as yet, no caramel, but I don't mind that. This is going to be okay.

If you also hated this the day you got it, put it away to rest (a bit like the All Rehab oils), and let it settle down and get it's act back together. You may be surprised.

As a plus, I also like the Charlie Red Eau Fraiche.

Vanillastorm40

I was hoping to love this, as per the reviews of it's likeness to Dior Dolce Vita (A LOVE FOR ME). I don't get the similarity at all. I was so hoping for the cloves and spice to be prominent. Instead I barely Smell them at all. Happy that I blind bought this from a seller who accepts returns. One thing I will say is that it's fiercely strong, I'm still trying to scrub.

arg1971

I received this beautiful fragrance by mail this past weekend and omg it was love at first sniff. I can't describe the scent but it doesn't really smell too much like the original Charlie which I wore in my teen years. Some say that this smells similar to Tresor bunch I dontmdetect Tresor notes, then again I may have to carry this with me to the department store the next time I go to seemifmthe scents do someone mimic. I really love the scent off the Charlie gold to me it's a better version of the original. I wore to work today and the day is almost over and can still smell it. What a incredible adventure to find such a beautiful scent for such a low price.

Dainty Brie

For those who like the warm, strong and spicy perfumes of the 90s, you will find a jewel here. Amber, peach, and honey mixed with flowers and lots of cinnamon. It is a delicious perfume. Perfect for winter.

dsty

Revlon's brand name brings up pleasant associations of reading teen girl magazines in the late nineties for me, but in the years since I hadn't given it a moment's thought until someone sent me a sample of this one. I was surprised to find out it even still exists, not to mention that it seems to be pretty popular here. Having tested it, I understand: there's nothing better than a really good, really cheap fragrance, and Charlie Gold certainly fits that profile!

It's the drydown that I like so much: such a warm, mellow, comfortable scent, all about sweet apricot and caramel with soft spices and pleasant amber. Very nice, and not quite gourmand, but almost - which I love. It sticks around all day as well. All that might not sound spectacular in and of itself, but at this price point, I think it is!

So I'd be rushing to the store right now if it weren't for the opening, which I don't like half as much as the drydown. I like that it kind of smells like hairspray, which is as nineties as the bottle design and my teenage memories that go with it, but there's something off about it - too musky in a way that doesn't go with the floral or fruity notes, a little sour to my nose. It only lasts a little while, and then that lovely drydown starts to develop, but still. I know myself, and I tend to avoid scents where I dislike the opening even a little, so I'll just leave it at sampling with this one. Too bad! I'm glad I got to test it, though, another eye-opener concerning cheap scents...

Vivavoice

I have resisted the Charlies for years due to some prejudice I had about over 'common commercial' scents. Thankfully I follow my nose nowadays, not the marketing schtick.Charlie Gold is a warm Winter weather winner for me. I have ET's Diamonds and Rubies which I love, but Gold is more vibrant and interesting with amazing depth - Rose is there but to my nose, not dominant.

Its just the right combination of spice, fruit and floral. Sweet enough to cheer any grey mood and not a screamer for folk near you. So cuddly with the cinnamon and plum notes constant throughout, even down to the soothing drydown. Highly recommended. With different packaging, this could sell for at least 4 times its current value. Winner winner chicken dinner.

CrazyCrab

I don't like Charlie Gold because I don't seem to be smelling the same as everyone else. Something in this turns my stomach. I was looking forward to cloves and cinnamon, but my nose perceives mainly dusty violet with dark rose in the background, and peachy syrup slopped over the top. If I squint my nose hairs I can maybe imagine smelling the memory of a clove. Ghostly transparent clove. The composition as a whole does remind me of Chloe Narcisse, but it's like a murkier version; like when you overmix paints and end up with a muddy colour. I'm sad I don't like it because it certainly doesn't smell cheap and it lasts very well, just not for me.

Beth1218

I was pleasantly surprised to find out how much I like this fragrance. I bought a large bottle on eBay at a very reasonable price. Judging by the notes, I expected Charlie Gold to be a predominately caramel type scent. Instead, it’s a lovely mixture of floral, fruity, sweet (but not cloying) and spicy. I also get some musk. I’m not a big fan of musk. Thankfully, it’s not overpowering and blends well with the other notes. Overall, I’m very happy with my purchase. I can hardly wait to wear Charlie Gold!

violetbelle

Markedly inexpensive and modestly bottled, Charlie Gold is easy to pass right over. Upon first spray I detect the quickest glimpse of the original Charlie. It's the dry down that matters to me, and it quickly satisfies: toasted-sugar encrusted white petals with a whisper of cinnamon. This is how you carry autumn into every season and make it wearable. Fresh and pretty with a hint of sunny sweetness. Just delightful. (Eau Fraiche)

giuseppe98gp83

I confess that I was afraid to try it because of the notes that could make it look like a gourmand bomb... Nothing of all here...Amber, Plum, Apricot, Cinnamon. This wonder makes me think of the great female masterpieces of the past. The name of this Revlon says it all because it is really GOLD!

Svenska79

Another of my Summer blind buys. This is a very likeable scent but too intense. For me Charlie Gold is a rich, spicy, and exotic fragrance. The cloves and cinnamon seem to dominate this entire fragrance. I wanted something softer where the rose and powdery softness would surround me. I won't be repurchasing but am still happy that I got to experience this for myself.

B!tchBrisket

Not what I was expecting. All I smell is fresh spring soap. Too powdery for me. This was a big miss for me

Valentineee

Trop craquant ce petit parfum, il me fait penser à Chloé Narcisse. La tenue est vraiment bonne et le sillage aussi! Pour le prix ce serait fou de s’en priver!

Selena

One of my first few perfumes started off with impulse body sprays, and then Paris Hilton heiress (which is now a no-go) for me, along with Mariah Carey's M.
And of course revlon Charlie red. I was about 17 at the time, still in high school.
I always kept red in my locker, and each time I had the opportunity I'd spray it on,
it made me feel so- school-ish & happy. Then I discovered Charlie gold about 2 years later, that's when my love for gourmands began. I got it for $10 back then, now it's on sale for $8,
I still have gold amongst my perfumes, which I sprayed on not even 10 minutes ago.
Man this perfume delivers more than the price, I think I may buy a back up.
Lasts a good time too & that's what I really like about it.

Phantomias

I blind bought this after reading the positive reviews on this site, and what a great buy this turned out to be. Charlie Gold may be the ultimate cheapie but it smells big bucks fantastic!

Deliciously sweet and spicy floral notes open big and dry down to melt into the skin. I have expensive perfumes that don't smell half as good as CG. This is a well blended fragrance, but it's not sugary. The amber and florals support the sweetness.

I've not had luck with several other Charlie frags and ended up giving them away, Gold will stay in my collection however!

PLUMPIE

I would love to wear Vintage Feminite du bois or Paloma Tentations every day but since they are discontinued and cost a fortune being so rare I can put them aside for special occasions and wear this delightful $10 bargain scent everyday. The carnation, cinnamon, sandalwood and cloves and plum notes make this similar in alot of ways to these scents. Also reminiscent of vintage Tresor with sweet apricot-peach before the reformulation which I now despise so that is also great. This is the only caramel containing scent I can wear as I don't like foody sweet sceny but in this slightly old fashioned blend it is just perfect. Gorgeous juice and sadly overlooked as the box and branding probably seem dated to modern consumers but their loss.

400blows

There's too much of something fruity in the mix, for me. I tried it on because attracted to the woody vanilla-ey sweet first whiff of residual bass notes. Smells much better with the rubbery leaf litter notes from my Goretex jacket from last time it went camping, since I got a little chilly.

annasarahr121

Charlie Gold is really lovely! It has echoes of some of my personal favorites: the warm peachy plum of Rochas Femme, but Charlie Gold is softer and more easy wearing; the peach note of Guerlain's Mitsouko, but much less austere oakmoss and vetiver; and the cinnamon peachy rosiness of Elizabeth Taylor's Diamonds and Rubies, but with more caramel and fewer flowers. I love this cinnamon, caramel, peachy, plummy, clove, and cedar scent!

AnitaHendricks

I'm surprised! This scent is just delicious. I enjoy the cinnamon and warm, sweet fruit notes. This would be a wonderful, casual scent during fall. It's not deep enough to wear at night time in my opinion but it wouldn't be wrong either! It's versitile.

Burgundy Jayde

What a magical fragrance of golden delicious juice!!!.... I find it odd some people complain that the bottle is ugly. It's not ugly it's just simple. I bought this EDT clear bottle off of eBay for less than $5. It's a very warm ambery smell. Very impressive for perfume so inexpensive. To be honest I really don't like the smell of cinnamon so I was thinking that I would not like the smell but I absolutely adore it because it doesn't smell like cinnamon on me. It smells beautiful flowery freesia but sweet. Chloe Narcisse, Treasure, and Ellen Tracy comes to mind immediately! The initial blast is a little strong but the dried down is absolutely phenomenal. It smells so fresh and classy. It's a very refined scent for very mature women. It's very powdery and I get the notes of plum, apricots and peaches. It smells so nice. Right now I cannot afford really expensive perfumes. But it's okay because these types of old school fragrances are classic. The newer fragrances try to emulate the older fragrances. They just package the fragrances for a lot more money and put them in a prettier bottle than Charlie does. This fragrance does not smell synthetic on me at all because its not synthetic its made from REAL PRECIOUS OILS. I'm really happy with this purchase the bottle is huge. I absolutely love it. It has a nice sillage and it lasts a very long time on my skin. Try it I think you'll like it. Update- the longevity of this perfume is unreal. I put it on at 9 am and it's now 8 pm and I can still smell it. It now smells more like vanilla or carmels. My friend said it smells soft and beautiful. What a gem!

Another update- I had just sprayed this on me and when I got into the elevator an older gentleman said " WOW YOU SMELL GREAT". When I told him is was one of the Charlie perfumes he said it was one of the best he smelled!

Another update 08-26-18- I wore this to work today and a co-worker said I smell like cotton candy!

Lilacs&Lavender

This is such an underrated beauty. Thank you to those who mentioned that it is almost a dupe for Christian Dior's Dolce Vita. You were right and you have saved me over $100 in purchasing Charlie Gold instead of another bottle of Dolce Vita. The cinnamon, sandalwood, apricot and peach notes are in both fragrances, with the cinnamon dominating. I actually prefer Charlie Gold. Who woulda thunk it.

frankincense&myrrh

[not so much a review this, more an accidental discovery]
On a whim I bought Charlie Gold (for all of £9 mind you!) thinking it's quite pleasant - especially at that price. And, in a further flight of fancy, layered it with TF London (which goes for hundreds & hundreds now, but fortunately I got myself a 250ml at duty free back in the day!) at a 2:1 ratio... in hot, humid summer weather... crazy, right?!
(Surely this is going to be even better in the winter but)...
8 hours later and i'm getting an unmistakable, albeit distant, vintage COCO EDP vibe! Perhaps it's not so hard to believe - looking at the notes - but in no way what I expected.
As I've one precious bottle of original COCO EDP which I reserve for special occasions, I know what I'll be doing now when I want an impression of COCO any day of the year! What an unexpected delight! Happy experimenting to all!

the purple rose

I was surprised at how nice this fragrance is.I really like this fruity ,cinnamon and soft powdery scent. The longer you wear this the nicer it becomes.Great value for the price.Rating 8/10.

lady_ireth264

My mother worn this for the duration of one full bottle. I love this on her. Not saying that it's old or anything.

It's linear yes but a fragrance with depth.
Warm and alluring. I detect the caramel and cinnamon the most indeed, but it starts fresh with the apricot.
Longevity 3-4 hours. Pretty decent.

I'm gonna buy her another bottle.
Suitable for mature woman.

Maryxcontrary

On me the initial spray opened EXACTLY like Elizabeth Ardens True Love - very sweet, powdery roses.
Within minutes though it became Chloe Narcisse without the spiciness.
A beautiful, cheap and extremely strong perfume.
For me this is not a snuggle up on the couch fragrance, this is something you'd wear if you wanted people to smell you from afar. Office perhaps?
I do not like Chloe Narcisse but have an appreciation for it, I do however really like this. It's elegant and smells expensive.
Unfortunately for me this perfume has given me a splitting headache so it's definitely not on my purchase list.

Mona Lygre

I forgotten to say that this perfume also smells absolutely wonderful on my clothes =))

intesmas

I blind-bought Charlie Gold and this clearly is a pleasant suprise, a nice warm, fruity, and ambery scent. I was pretty sure I wouldn't like it since I'm not a fan of caramel, amber, nor apricot, but somehow the combination of all notes together works out especially well. A smooth and cozy everyday fragrance for an amazingly low price.

lulu169

OMG this is almost a dupe for Dior Dolce Vita - just testing them both - each on a wrist and cannot tell the difference!! Im gonna save a lot of money now...!!!! :D

Lumoava

Since I got this couple of months ago, I've reach for it more often than any other scent I own. I just love it so much!
Spicy, fruity, rosy, delicious caramel! Round and soft, yes, like many have mentioned. The only problem is I have to bath in it to get a little sillage, since the Eau fraiche version is rather week. It does last a while, but turns to a faint skin scent. I hope the Edt I ordered will be a little more potent. (it was but you still need quite a few sprays, at least I do)

albena.alexandrova

Very round, soft, delicious perfume. It starts slightly synthetic, but in seconds it is smooth and produces a soothing sweetness. I put it off and went to make a cake. My friend came in and said - here smells great and you smell awesome. :) Despite the extremely low price, this perfume holds level and is nice.

Mona Lygre

I also bought this perfume blind, cause it was so cheap, it smells caramell on my skin, and I love it :))

meliecat

Charlie Gold. We`re good friends you and I.

First of all, you`re a big bottle of spices, amber and vanilla (yes, vanilla on me, not caramel really..) Then, you`re quite cheap, but surprisingly long-lasting! Your drydown isn`t synthetic, watered-down or bland and you remain close to my skin for a good 4-5 hours. You are called `Gold`, which is a precious commodity anywhere in the world.

You were the perfume that drove the love of my life crazy. He`s probably sniffing it in shops still..

Thank you for all the above.

yantestrs

This is actually nice. It's warm and spicy and has an old school vibe about it.

VVB3

I was certain I would hate this scent but I bought it blind since it was so inexpensive. Surprisingly, after the drydown (which is NOT good on me) It is a wonderful scent that works well on me. I was SHOCKED. I did make sure to spay this on my stomach area since I was wearing to work... and I got beautiful whiffs of the scent all day. Lots of cinnamon so works well in very cold weather. I would never wear this in the summer.

zirzilla

I blind bought this in summer, and I hated it. The smell was too intense, and obviously, too warm. But now, when we're approaching the winter days, I fall in love with it more and more every time I put in on. Very very potent though, one spritz is all you need, even that one can sometimes overwhelm me if I'm not ready for it. I'm almost waiting for the temperature to drop till like -15 Celsius so I could feel the perfume's full potential.

Lumoava

Tempted to blind buy this... I remember I got this as a gift when I was young, but I didn't really wear perfume then and can't remember how it was. I see few people here finding similarities to Chopards Casmir, which I own but has some notes in it that I dislike. I also can't detect that much cinnamon in Casmir, which is a shame. So maybe this cheapie would be something a little similar in style but better?!

Edit: I just had to go and order it and I'm wearing it right now :) I think it was a wise decision to pick the Eau Fraiche version instead of the Edt. Since the bottle is big, I am now able to spray more liberately and use it before it goes off :) Of course, it's not that long lasting or strong in this concentration, but not poor either.

I even tried layering this with Chopard Wish, which has caramel in it too, and CG emphazises the note nicely and brings warmth.

I like this very much! Warm, cinnamoncy caramel, rose and fruity sweetness... Very suitable for the upcoming Christmas!

brieks07

This perfume lasts *forever*! I sprayed it on in the afternoon, went through my day, TOOK A SHOWER, and the next morning, I could still catch whiffs of Charlie Gold on my wrist!

Timby

I tried this on in a fragrance boutique, but my nose was so overwhelmed there by all the spritzes, it wss hard to tell what this was really like. I almost didn't get it, but the price was so good, I couldn't say no.

And am I glad I got it.

Lovely! Warm, round, soft, feminine. I thought it might be daytime only, but no, its good for night too.

Will be enjoying this bottle.

I get a lot of peach, apricot, just as in Tresor. But unlike Tresor, thete is a light spicy undertone.

No sweetness, at least not on me.

I love it! a keeper! esp at this price!!! just under $10!!!!

Eridanshay1

I snagged a test spray of this last summer in Europe and never could get it off of my mind. I finally ordered a bottle for $10 off of Amazon which I jokingly love to refer to as "ten buck Chuck". :)
It is a warm floriental and evokes the very color of the juice...GOLD. I FEEL this scent almost as much as I smell it. It is like a warm hug, a steaming mug of hot apple cider, your favorite cashmere sweater, caramel candies, the smell of fallen leaves and a crackling fire all wrapped in to a liquid nectar. I love the amber, cinnamon, clove and florals, and they blend well with the stone fruit notes.
It's basically October in a bottle.
The fragrance is strong, but not Obsession or Youth Dew strong, and it stays within an arms reach of my skin, adding to the coziness factor since people must come closer to your person in order to smell it.
I will be using this with some of my other vanilla based scents as I am really trying to learn layering techniques.

If you like: Spark by Liz Claiborne, you may enjoy this.
If you like: Revlon Fire & Ice, you may enjoy this.
If you like: Bijan VIP you may enjoy this.
If you like: Tresor by Lancome, you may enjoy this.

Thank you for taking the time to read my review. xo

Affordable, rich warm floral perfume, not very long lasting, lasts about 5 hours, but its a good perfume. Good for everyday use, wouldn't recommend it for special occasions.

thepatch

In my kindergarten in the mid nineties, we had wooden make up vanity desk with all sorts of empty perfume bottles used for playing. This scent reflects my memory on that time. What I enjoy the most are the first fifteen minutes after spraying consisting of musky blast sandalwood, orange and amber. This oriental opening is changing fast into flowery notes of peach, jasmine and rose. In traces I sense really just a bit of caramel and cinnamon. Cloves appear together with more powdery rose toward the end, and I believe this makes it typical nineties recognizable "cheapy". It lasts around hour and a half on my skin which I don't mind because it becomes enough powdery and it is then close to skin. All in all, I am excited to wear it in cold melancholy autumn.

cocolover56

Fruit bomb! I love this so much. So much stone fruits. It's like a peach pie.

JacquieDS

Just got a 100ml today for $9.99, as I was running out of the Drugstore. So far, its a bit too much....
I tried 1 spritz and its up my nose a scent I dont quite fancy, not dislike.
In the same strong range as Chloe Narcisse which I like if its just 1 spirtz.
Next cheap thrill will be Tabu.

socorrosouza

That really has amazing sillage and longevity: one small spray and that's it for 12 hours no other perfume could compete with Charlie Gold (I sprayed just to remember the scent, as the day was hot I wanted a fresher perfume but not even I'Adore could compete with Charlie Gold).Cloves, cinnamon and caramel with a little amber are the main notes on me.

Siv7Stars

I had to try this because it was only £6 and the notes and the reviews looked promising. The first blast was lovely, similar to Diamonds and Rubies, but with a quieter peach and some caramel. There was a brief moment it turned like fudge flavour furniture polish but it got sweeter again and the chemical scent disappeared.. but I'm not wowed. If I want caramel I may have to get Juicy Gold after all.
All of you writing essays on this stuff extoling it's virtues seem very easily pleased..
The husband likes it :D It's just become mild sweetness, like Vera Wang Princess end of drydown.
But tbh overall, for £6 this is actually great. I might try the blue one next.

sanahrose

Just got this as a blind online buy. And on first soray, I didn't like it. The mild orange was not what i was expecting when I read oriental floral fragrance. Then it was so light. A few mins later, it turned powdery andfresh smelling. And spices of all kinds, like cloves, cinnamons maybe. Then finally there it comes the part I love. The spicy, musky, caramel, dry down. It gave me a whiff of Revlon fire and ice deo I used years back and for that, I will keep this. Coz it is simply sexy.

kessyster

Once more I have to put my thumbs up for this gem.
Today I've used my Charlie to go out for just over an hour. Once I back home, to my apartment, minutes after I arrived my hubby arrived in the lobby. When he opened the door of our apartment the first thing he told me was " I knew it that you just arrived at home because soon I opened the downstairs lobby door I noticed your nice perfume ".

This is a Charlie EDT! And based alcooh fragances doesn't left trails after you've sprayed for over a hour ago ( at least is what I believed).
That's means one thing... this one is even better than I thought ( super staying power, super silage!).

Charlie Gold Eau Fraiche Spray Glass Bottle

This is a popular and beloved drugstore cheapie. If for some reason the original Charlie, the epitome of a green floral, is not for you, Gold is a more engaging scent of gourmand notes & spices. This was such a nice perfume when I first smelled it. I wore it off and on in the 90's, usually at tea parties with my Charleston society club. There is something of a modern "gourmand" in it while resembling Guerlain Mitsouko. This was always issued as an eau fraiche or eau de toilette so the concentration was not as strong as regular perfume. I always received compliments on it. A mature but delectable and even sexy fragrance, Charlie Gold seems to have something for everyone.

Within this amber liquid, a wafting fragrance of fruited caramel, clove, violet, cedar wood and cinnamon. For me this is a delicious scent of caramelized amber and cinnamon spice. These two notes are the strongest, so if you're really into caramel and cinnamon, this is almost like smelling pure caramel and cinnamon over a fruit cake. The fruit notes are also quite pronounced: an orange plum and peach as well as an apricot. The apricot an peach becomes boozy, like peach liqueur. While fruity it's dark fruit, alcoholic fruit, not tropical fruit. While I can still wear this as a day wear perfume, it doubles as an evening cologne. Very flexible, casual, perhaps a bit linear, not long lasting, but very nice.

For a Charlie, it lacks multiple flowers. I could detect a violet, a distinct violet, heady, sweet and a floral note that I've always enjoyed. The violet hits high notes and drowns out the rose, jasmine and freesia. For the lie of me I can't find the rose although the jasmine is faintly detectable. The reason for the shy florals must owe to the fact that this is more about the fruit & spices, especially that caramel which dries down to an amber & musk. A woodsy cedar note is in there too, which I find very pleasant. There might also be a vanilla note. Vanilla & cedar go so well together I don't know if anyone's noticed. I think this is a bit of a gourmand Oriental, the Charlie version of Casmir by Chopard only with lower volume. It can also pass as a unisex fragrance so guys can sport this too. It's neither too masculine nor too feminine. It has ingredients found in both women and men's fragrances: cedar, musk, spices, amber, fruit & floral notes.

As you can see from all the reviews, this is a perfume worth looking into. This is my favorite Charlie but I have worn the original in the 70's. I can't tell you how much both fragrances affect me. But this scent is always going to take me back to the 90's when I was active among the community of citizens of Charleston before my move to Mount Pleasant. If I had to pick out a season to wear this, I would say that it's definitely the winter time. While not smoky, it dries down to a warm musk, and the cinnamon, cloves, spices are stronger than the fruit which make it more spicy and appropriate for the colder months of the year. It has a sort of Christmas fruit cake type of vibe.

Delicious!

alsa7

I bought this perfume having great hopes after reading the reviews. While it's not offensive, I cannot shake the idea that it smells like face cream. There is no cinnamon, warm spice on me, just this smell of night care. I believe personal care products must eradicate perfumes from them all so we can actually enjoy perfumes without prejudice.

teapeach

Amber with spices, and hints of caramel and peach sweets. It's not a warm scent per se, but is pretty old school without being aldehydic or grandma. However, I cannot stand the dry down; it seems fake and plastic-y, which is what put me off this one, so I've given it to my mum who it works on much better!

MyersAlice

A warm polyester blanket in autumn with a
cup of spicy, sweet tea. Probably the best and most simple way for me to explain how this makes me feel.

takeasniff

Did anyone ever try the charlie sunshine and there was a charlie white musk? Impossible to get now but they were nice. I love this for me its lije tressor and calvin klein escape had a baby. It is hard to find they always have the original charlie blue but to get the others can be difficult so stock up if you like it who knows when you will see it again.

Sofia Ambrose

just got the Charlie Gold delivered as a blind buy after reading reviews on fragrantica and I'm pleasantly surprised! My first reaction was that it smells similar to Caesar's Woman but has far less tangerine. After wearing the juice for about a half hour, it has transitioned to a very spicy, honeyed and musky elixir. Definitely exotic, suppose it can be deemed what they call an Oriental? But I'm thinking more like something you might pick up at a bazaar in some small lane in south central Asia, as I can smell attar / incense. I Love it!

Lizzard

So sad that in spite of the notes listed and wonderful reviews this blind buy is a scratchy screechy scrubber on me.

sophiesnose

What can I say about this one that hasn't already been said? It's so warm and wonderful. Cosy. It's absolutely perfect for the cool Canadian Falls and Winters. I love it. It smells rich and luxurious. Peachy, amber and warm spices. Amazing. It's scents like this one that makes me glad the weather has turned cooler.

kessyster

This one is my signature! I got 2 bottles and planning to get even another one sometime soon as I don't know if they will carry on sell where I live. Everyone compliment me and ask about when I wear Charlie Gold! When I tell them they got surprised as is not a perfume and is very cheap! I bought a eau de toilet and an eau de frâiche. This stuff lasts all day! Impregnates my clothes even after I wash them! I don't mind as I love it so much! Just avoid spray on your clothes unless when you wear black as left stain in the clothes. Not that I never done that but happened once when I was getting ready in a rush. This smell so vintage like ( as I am a vintage lover). So sweet, powdering, cinnamon, warm smell. I recommend only wear on the night and during the cold months.

Essy_C

Cheap and cheerful, I get a creamy amber-almond along with some sandalwood.

tandaina

Crap. This should be a perfect cheap perfume for me. I love every note, except one.

And that one kills it. The damn clove takes over and it's all I smell. Nothing else. This is something my skin does, amps up clove. So sadly this doesn't work for me at all, no sweet, no floral, no fruit, no cinnamon. Just clove.

cafe au lait

A nostalgic scent which gives a pleasant, warm feeling. I realIy liked it.I am planning to use it some time. It's bit heavy though. I wouldn't prefer to use it in the office. The longevity is very good compared to the price.

SuzanneS

I wore this in the 90s. Forgot about it till recently. How fun is this one..it has a little something for everyone.

At first spray, the orange, apricot freesia jumps out at you..then the peachy plums ..more jasmine..a little bit of spice adds interest, the notes take turns dancing around. Caramel and sandalwood rise up to a gourmand scent. Cozy...think Tresor with caramel..boozy, rich cinnamon, Dolce Vita...

What a lot of bang for your buck with this one..but make sure you like the peach accord everyone was working in the 90s...related peach apricot orientals include: Tresor (fruity jasmine peach apricot), 273 (White floral to peachy apricot), & Giorgio Beverly Hills (peach apricot to white floral)...

socorrosouza

I had Charlie Gold in my closet for over 2 years, received it on a very hot day and hated it. Yesterday, reading the comments about CG and being a somewhat cooler day decided to try it again. And I liked it a lot.A caramel ambery sweetness (don't think there is vanilla or a lot of vanilla in it), with cloves and cinnammon at the forefront too, some sandalwood and perhaps patch and peach. Long lasting (over 7 hours on my skin) with moderate sillage, this is a treat and an exclusive one.

FairyDuff

I'm delighted with Charlie Gold; the perfume equivalent of Jersey Caramels. I bought it heavily discounted from a large pharmacy chain, encouraged by the enthusiastic reviews already posted here.
It's a good everyday autumn scent. As it's a moderate sillage and because it was so cheap, I've enjoyed a rampant week of indulgent and undisciplined over-spraying!
Caramel and vanilla notes are always evident, and cinnamon also in the first few hours. The vanilla notes are the longest lasting; they were still present on the skin at 5pm today, having been applied more than 10 hours earlier.
Finally I must mention a curious effect - I keep checking to see if an iron or oven top has been left on around about four hours after applying the fragrance. A faint undetected dusty-electronic note? Odd.

mashuda

I don't know if I've done a review for this already (cba to scroll thru) but I've always referred to this in other reviews of mine from a negative point of view..... but today I will take everything back. Recently I bought chanel Allure edp and altho I have allocated it as a gift I can't stop thinking about the smell.... at first I was like omg this (chanel Allure) smells like crappy Charlie gold!!! Anyway, Chanel Allure grew on me pretty much straight away. The gentle spicy ambery Ness and gorgeous creamy Ness. .... and I can't stop thinking about it. Such a clean sophisticated smell but I can't wear it because it's now a gift for someone. .... today I sprayed on Charlie gold just for the sake of it (I always go thru my perfumes and give each one some love whilst lounging around at home) and I got that lovely chanel Allure Ness. ... omg. I take back all the negative stuff I've said about this perfume and I'm so glad I've got it. I don't think my nose was clever enough to appreciate this hidden gem. I get all that creamy vanillary cinamonny Ness now that everyone was talking about in their reviews.... it's got a cosy sweetness to it, not sickly toothachingly.....it's funny how we have things for a long time and shun them and then one day bam!!! Our scent perception changes and we start loving something we once loathed. Another reason to hold onto dissapointing buys.... most times (in my case) they end up growing on you. :)

Kai'elle

Crazy mix of lightly spiced powdered flowers...it brings an odd smile to the face :) It's definitely synthetic and kinda cheezy..but forgivable somehow.

I enjoy the top and mid of this scent. The lovely hints of cinamon and gentle cloves keep me sniffing. But the drydown I'm not so keen on. About an hour into every wearing I have had, all the 14 notes completely fade out and the dreaded peach settles in for the duration :(

Oh well...I just get my kicks the first hour then lather something else over the top...sometimes successfully ;)

Southern Blonde

This is a gorgeous aromatic amber perfume. It reminds me of Black Pearls by Elizabeth Taylor and I can confirm that because I have both fragrances and have even worn them at the same time layering them together. This is a caramel scent as well. That caramel is so delicious but not in a too-sweet way. It's definitely got some dark edges and a bit of a mystery to it. The cloves, there could be some patchouli, sandalwood, some incense. It's dark but not scary. It's the kind of shade you get into in a booth at a restaurant with your loved one. Smells Oriental and classy. There are not that many flowers in this perfume. I smelled the violet and rose, I think there was a jasmine. It's mostly caramel, cloves, cinnamon and amber. There's also just enough fruit to keep it sweet and fresh mostly oranges and peaches and apricot. This is really very nice.

Fragrance Review For Charlie Gold Revlon

*Eau Fraiche

Notes: Orange, apricot, sandalwood, plum, amber, cinnamon, musk, violet, freesia, peach, jasmine, caramel, cloves, cedar rose

I never did like Charlie the original classic. I had a frightful first spray which to me was very harsh and I was not able to enjoy the rest of the experience with it. But Charlie Gold is something else. For me this flanker is a superior alternative to Charlie. This is an exotic aroma of spices, woods, and fruit. It's classified as an Oriental and they weren't kidding. Although it's strong, has great sillage and projection and feels full bodied, it lacks the head-heart-base note structure which only means that the scent is linear and smells the same from the first spritz to the dry down. It's a flavorful aromatic spicy fragrance which wears like a very early gourmand scent before the gourmands became popular. The cinnamon and caramel is delicious and by far the strongest accord. The cloves and woodsy notes of cedar and sandalwood give it that Oriental flair. For me as an expert nose I can tell that the cloves is what brings everything together. If this has a base it's filled with sandalwood and woods which properly support the other notes giving this scent a fruity-floral vibe. There's a violet that really jumps out at me. There's also a rose. The sweet fruits of peach apricot and plum provide the fragrance with an almost Rochas Femme type of fruitiness but I find that Rochas Femme is softer. This one is a bolder saucier creature. It can also be compared to Black Pearls by Elizabeth Taylor although the peach note in Black Pearls is stronger whereas the peach in Charlie Gold is softer. The sandalwood in Black Pearls is also stronger as is the floral notes. I didn't think of this scent as being too floral. Despite the fruits and flowers, it's a fragrance which at heart delivers spicier scents and the gourmand caramel. It's fun to smell and identify each of the note as they waft in the air and onto your nose. I think this scent is best suited to winter time because it is so warm and because it almost wears like a smell you'd inhale in a coffee house. It's really quite comforting and cozy but it's also very exotic, seductive. I would never call this an old lady fragrance. On me it smelled sexy. My girl friend smelled it on me in a taxi cab the other night and she said it smells very sexy. She asked me what fragrance I was wearing and I told her "You won't believe me but it's Charlie Gold". She'd never heard of it but that's great! This perfume smells a tad Arabic but without the musk and oud. It's a sweeter and fruiter caramelized amber with fruity-floral edges. If you like amber perfume or exotic Orientals but don't want to wear the authentic Middle Eastern perfumes this is a really nice alternative. It's a beautiful aroma. I can see why they called it GOLD because it does have a golden feel to it, warm, glowing golden amber. I love it. My mother wore the original Charlie and she asked me about this one and I let her try it. She liked it and will be purchasing it. The price is very affordable for a great fragrance and you can buy this baby easily with one click on Amazon.com I will have to say however that I have a very rare discontinued version called Eau Fraiche which is probably a lighter/eau de toilette version of the eau de parfum. But it probably smells very similar as the bottle looks exactly the same as the Charlie Golds. Love it. Just love it.

mishko

At the first spray all I get is a sweet plastic peach scent. On its drydown phase it gets more floral and tolerable. I would say this more of a mature scent. It lasts for hours.

MLK

I found this for $9.99 for 100ml bottle at my local pharmacy. I sprayed some on and was pleasantly surprised....it's really nice, fruity, warm and sensual. Reminded me very much of Rochas Femme. I went back the next day and bought a bottle.... At such a low price, why not?

lindley

Just an updated comment:

Now I've owned this for a while, I find it interesting that, with all the choices in my collection available, I reach for my $8 bottle of Charlie Gold at least twice a week. It always feels like a welcome dose of sweet, spicy happiness.

libel

This was a blind buy for me and unfortunately a bad one... threw it away after the first sniff on my wrist. After reading such good reviews and seeing the main notes, I thought it would be pleasant caramel, powdery goodness. Oh no! Nothing close to that. I don't even want to remember the smell and try to describe it (getting nauseous) A big no no.
One positive thing thou, it was cheap

LadyPilot

As regards this precious drugstore classic, I used to have it and I loved it at first. I'm sure I'd still love it on others, but on myself it is just waaaayyyyy too much!!! So it went to my dear friend here, I kept the decant though.
It is pretty much like Nina Ricci L'Air du Temps with some huge dose of sugar and cloves. But it is a fantastic reminder of the eighties or early nineties and
It is really loud, really long-lasting and so perfectly vintage! I really wish I was able to wear it, especially in winter, I know that people would be impressed;)

Kione

I blind bought this after a review here. I had bought Charlie Blue under the same circumstances, and while Charlie Blue was an good surprise, Gold is very dissapointing. I don't get any of the woods or spiciness at all. All I get is sweet cloying vanilla.

Having said that, Blue didn't impress me to start with either, and then grew on me!

I will keep trying Gold... But today its nauseating me. I tried to wash it off and its still there! Points for longevity at least.

juniemoon

I just picked up Charlie Gold, Blue and Red to add to my growing collection over the Christmas break mostly because of the reviews here on this forum which I just joined which I love (have been reading/lurking for a while though!) Beacause they're cheap. And great. And last. Most scents my skin just gobbles up and are gone before too long.

Gold is great for fall/winter - warm woodsy spicy cozy strong and am especially loving the cedar note which brings me to mention while I was in my local really great perfumery store (for prices, service and the gals will search and order stuff they don't have if they can, for me). I happened to test Bill Blass Wood had never heard of before and instantly fell in love; yes it's mens, but there was that cedar again, I'm a sucker for. Apparently this is very hard to find and very pricey (but it's gorgeous and a powerhouse that lasts forever). They got me three testers new in box for $20 each! So when got home I sprayed a shot of Charlie Gold on me together with Bill Blass Wood and got woodsy citrus blast of heaven. Pretty strong and maybe not everyone could handle that but I LOVED it. I wear both on their own and sometimes together! woot!

idyhar

I've passed this perfume counter so many times when I was doing my grocery shopping. Something about the box reminds me of my mother's dresser when I was little. So i called her and she said she had it when I was a wee baby. For the life of me i can't recall how it's smells like.

So i bought it, out of curiosity. Plus its cheap, like $6 or something.

First initial spray : CARAMEL! APRICOT! PEACH!

Well, it just stays like that until the 2nd hour when the vanilla starts sneaking in..and just a pinch of cinnamon.

Overall, I love it. It's sweet without being cloying, and it's comforting. Reminds me of Chopard Casmir, minus the heaviness. And none of those sweet skankiness of VS.

Mr Hubby love it, and he can't believe it's that cheap. My mum asked me to buy 2 bottles for her since she can't find it anywhere nowadays. For me, I don't know wether I'll buy another bottle fo myself..but I'm gonna enjoy it while it lasts!

2-3 spritz last 7-8 hour on me, with 3-4 ft sillage.
4/5

Sedjetbast

I have only worn this once, so these are initial thoughts only.
I got no caramel or spice, which was sad. I use Charlie Red a lot for work, and this seemed fairly similar to red. But the notes are completely different, and everyone else seems to get so much more from it.
That said, I have a full bottle, so will keep trying it. Maybe it will come out properly after a few wears.

HeidiLynn

Oh, sadness! I blind-swapped for this one, feeling confident in the notes and reviews that I would love it; but I find that I must be anosmic to most of it's elements! I can smell a vague, caramelly sweetness and a hint of spicy musk....but nothing else. I don't get cinnamon, amber or sandalwood--all notes I adore, all notes I thought I would be able to smell here. It's kind of an insipid fragrance to my nose, when I wanted was a sweet, rich, spicy oriental. Instead, it's like caramel water on my skin, with poor sillage and longevity (at least for my nose: it's possible others smell something completely different when I walk by!)

Nikkafragrance

Thanks to a lovely Fragrantica member(Tippy, thank you once again)I am wearing this beauty right now. I have to admit that the reviews for Charlie Gold left me with mixed feelings and I couldn't make up my mind whether to blind buy or not. But at the moment I can't stop smelling my wrist. This perfume is sweet on my skin - I can sense a tasty cocktail of caramel, apricot and peach. The cinnamon it's not too much. I can't distinguish the flowery notes yet, on me it's a fruity gourmand fragrance. IMO the scent is suitable for winter, spring and fall. Sillage and longevity are excellent.

ourladyskye

This is my comfort scent. One (or two!) spritzes of this puppy brightens my mood any time. It's like a hug in a bottle. It performs incredibly, too--the first time I wore it it lasted all day and I woke up smelling it the next morning. Definitely a keeper.

nvenus

Edt:
It's like an expensive perfume mixed with a cheap perfume.
Spicy, powdery, caramel and cinnamon. An even balance between cinnamon and caramel aswell as the sandalwood and amber. The rest of the notes are noticeable in different amounts.

An ok fragrance but I can see how some could like or dislike it more than I do. Tends to get a bit overwhelming because of its intensity.

lindley

Having struck out on Charlie Blue (too harsh) and Red (too ho-hum), I had low hopes for Gold.

I was utterly unprepared for how warm, delicious and utterly wonderful this spicy, caramel dream of a perfume is. "Gold" just seems the perfect name for it, somehow. I can finally be a Charlie girl, and love it!

SzekelyEmoke

Just received this as a blind-buy and I'm also kind of disappointed with it. I thought it would be warmer, but is very old fashioned and has that something that makes me dislike it a lot...smells like geranium.
It wouldn't be a problem if it would have been spicy, but is not...is just nauseating and unpleasantly retro and very old fashioned. :(

Cerise Noire

I'm looking at the notes and I don't know what it is about this, but when I smell it all I can think of is the smell of vintage makeup. The images it evokes are Revlon ads from the 50's. I wonder if anyone else has this idea.

rhaineclayton

Wow! This is amazing! $9.95AUD for 100ml. At first it has that kind of vibe you get with say the original dark Chloe or Ciara. Then as it develops it turns into this Tresor-like treasure. If I didn't already have Chloe and Tresor this would be a definite buy. Such a bargain!

valbona.bergman

First stage of Charlie Gold is skanky soap...it is very cloying if you smell it up close. On me it did not last very long and at the dry down i could see where the resemblance with tresor came from. It will last more on the clothes but i am not sure if i will dare to wear it. I did not smell any caramel on this perfume and it is a bit more soapy(although skanky at the same time) than i like my orientals to be.

MindyMe

I have only recently become a member of fragrantica despite having used it to research perfumes for a while. I have been adding my perfumes as I go along and last night added Charlie Gold after remembering that I had put some perfumes I was not wearing much in a separate cupboard.
While reading the reviews I saw a few people mention Tresor, which is currently one of my favourites, so I spritzed my wrist with Charlie Gold and could not believe that I have had it for years, although I haven't worn it in quite a few, and now that I am in the middle of a love affair with Tresor, did not realise the resemblance!!!
When looking at the main accords they don't bring the same type of fragrance to my mind.
Charlie Gold is wonderful however I have to use a light hand as it can be a bit overpowering as I discovered again last night - longevity and silage are huge!
This was a happy re-discovery for me.

Krasnylips

I am sure that an author of this fume had a great idea and formula in mind, the problem here is that it was produced within a low budget therefore components and technology are cheap. It is a bit hard to see the great idea behind that simplicity of the fume but still it is really nice, actually comforting and sunny scent. I am curious how it would have sounded should it had been produced with better quality components.

karmascent

This isn't a fragrance to dismiss at first stream. The cheap "sprayer" is more likely to put out a drizzly stream of juice than a wafting cloud. It's that onslaught of juice that is an overload of alcohol with cheap synthetic white flowers. If dollar store plastic flowers had a scent, this would be it. Just when you're ready to scrub it off and write off your cheap investment (for me it was $6), something interesting happens: it morphs into a lickable candied gourmand.

The drydown is delectable: caramel-coated sandalwood brightened by a touch of creamy white flowers. No harshness. No chemicals. So yummy that it makes me rethink my "I don't prefer gourmands" stance.

Corinne39

Because this was so "inexpensive" I didn't know what to expect..but the fact is that it's actually really very nice! It's not going to change your world or make your life "complete", but if Revlon put this in a fancy bottle and called it something exotic, people would pay a lot more for it.. Not that I'm saying there's anything wrong with it being called "Charlie Gold", I like the fact that it has that retro look and feel to it, being a 70'S child myself! It smells warm and cosy and yummy and spicy and sweet and I'm glad I bought it.. Don't overlook this just because of the price tag.. :)

catclaud

A sweet caramel smell that doesn't last very long on me. I hoped for the feisty kick of Charlie Red, but it has not. Yet, not bad at all, pleasant to wear when I go to sleep.

Basteth

This smells of lovely caramel, for about 5 seconds. That's how long this stays on me and in the air. After that, I have to really dig in to even get a hint of it. I practically rub my nose on my wrist and then I can smell it some more but not for very long either. I must have gotten a totally different batch that the reviewer who wrote that her receptionist made the whole floor smell for an entire day. To bad because it did seem to be quite a nice smell.

francie79

I love cinnamon perfumes and I'm always on the hunt for fun, inexpensive ones. This is fabulous in everyway and after one sniff made it to my favorites shelf. It almost smells like Lancôme Tresor and Chopard Casmir had a baby. The peach, cinnamon, and caramel show up the most to my nose. I wasn't aware when I ordered this that there were different concentrations and I accidently ordered the eau fraiche version which is in between eau de cologne and eau de toilette. Since this is so cheap, 7 bucks a bottle on ebay, I went ahead and ordered an edt version also so it will stay on my skin a bit longer. This one lasts about 4 hours which isn't bad but I prefer more longevity. A real gem and it's real cheap. Love!!

I'm not really into food-scented perfumes, or ones that are very sweet, but thought that buying a bottle of this to test how well a caramel fragrance would really smell on me, so I blind bought Charlie Gold because of it's cheap price, and my reaction wasn't love, or hate, it was just a resounding "Hmm.".

It smells very much like peaches and the strange smell slightly-off squashed apricots on the ground under the blistering summer sun, a smell I knew from growing up around an ancient apricot tree that produced copious amounts of fruit each year. The smell is familiar and nice in its own right, but not something I enjoy on myself.

However, I give it full credit for having immense longevity and sillage on my skin.

I have since used it up as a room spray, and wouldn't repurchase again, just because of the pure fruitiness.

Bollen

Ah! The joys of a blindbuy! It can be a total lovestory like the one I have with Madonnas 2 scents Truth or Dare and ToD Naked. It can be a complete disaster like the one I had with Karl Lagerfelds Karleidoscope and Gloria Vanderbilt. And sometimes it can be something in between, like this one. Something unexpected. Like the fact that I smell zero caramel.. Being somewhat of a sugarjunkie the fact that I dont smell any caramel is of course a bit disappointing. But once I accepted it for what it is I started to kinda like it.

I get six different notes here. Sandalwood first of all, peach, cinnamon and cedar and behind it all a veil of sweet amber and musk. After it has settled on the skin I get a clear PlayDough vibe, the kind me and my brothers played with 20-30 yrs ago (don't know if it has that distinct and strangely delicious smell still?)
Unexpected, not disappointed. Will definitely use this one.

ZELJO

I.m male, its early may but its hot as if it were August 10,I,m using that one...and I feel great, its sticky, yes, sweet caramel,ok,but its yummy, intoxicating but addicting and to my view, could be a 2000,s males gourmand edt...love that one

LadyPilot

Wow, this is one good discovery!:) It slightly reminds me of Nina Ricci L'Air du Temps, but in the best possible way - the spice, cloves, wood without the hideous aldehydes - just as if somebody came up with the edition for younger women who want to smell modern but with a delicate nostalgic note. Charlie Gold lasts forever and in time it develops beautifully - all the initial sharpness goes away, only warm wood and vanilla remain. And the price is just incredible! The 100ml bottle cost me less than 7 Euro... :)))))))))))

harikaevre

Today I randomly tested this on my sweater. I just can't help sniffing it every five minutes! lol! Its been hours but it is still outloud. there is something so sexy and provoking about this perfume ! Absolutely feminine and seductive in a dirty way, I sure like it :)

JewelPeaBlue

Yesterday morning, as I stepped out of the elevator and into the lobby in our office building, I thought "Wow it smells great in here! They must have changed the air-freshener." "It reminds me of Tresor, it`s probably a very expensive air-freshener!", I reckoned.

A few hours later, as our receptionist entered my office, I realised it was her perfume that I had been smelling all day. Charlie Gold, apparently. I have never tried it on my skin, but having it smelled on her (and on our entire floor, actually) makes me want to. The rose is very prominent, it floats above layers of sandalwood, amber and caramel. It`s spicy and quite thick and syrupy.

Longevity and sillage are great – this lady says she sprayed thrice and only because it was the first time wearing it, and it filled the whole floor – two spritzes would be enough. And I see it`s very cheap, but it doesn`t smell cheap.

patxaran

At this price my expectations aren't unrealistic but I fail to recognize what others smell here. The opening is a chemical blast sweet powdery almost like aldehydes. After a while I can detect cinnamon but at this stage the fragrance becomes quieter on my skin. The drydown is not bad but barely noticeable. Maybe the bottle I tested was off.

whimsicalpopsicle

I cannot believe this is so cheap ... Thank you lovely fragrantica participants for this. Another blind buy, another gem. I have to say though I don't like the opening of this oldie goldie but the way this thing evolves ... omg! This is way better than most expensive well-known perfumes today. I can still smell it, 10 hours after aplication. I sprayed it on my wrist and now I just have to test it on the clothes too, I really need to know what it does to the fabric. Thank you again you all ;)

paolalala

It looks like Shafali Fleur Rare, discontinued perfume( Yves Rocher ). This Charlie Gold is very hard to find in France...
I love this warm creamy fragrance, perfect in all seasons.
Chic & voluptuous...

sygrid29

i got this one and it smells like a mixture of avon imari velvet and givenchy amarige. on my skin it smells like a very luscious bubblegum. there is also something in this fragrance that reminds me of Dior tendre poison on the drydown at least for me.

lirael00

Why is this so cheap? It's beautiful. Perfect for winter/fall days. It's very crispy oriental and it gives you a feeling of warmth and protection. I've tried to wear it also in the summer, but it's so much better for the cold weather and for me almost all the spicy fragrances with cinnamon as their dominant note are more wearable in winter. On my skin it lasts for about 6 hours, projection is pretty good too. I love Charlie Gold, and i love how you don't have to pay a lot to smell expensive. Get it if you can!

Dragonsheart

Better than I have expected. And now I'm in love with this fragrance and It's addiction to this rose in caramel.

ilanjo

I like Charlie so much! I bought it because I read many good reviews here and I'm not disappointed. It smells good. Not strong but also not soft. The smell lasts quite long for me. I had Charlie Blue and I like that too.

nitschevo

Received it today and am a tad disappointed. Based on reviews I was hoping for some cinammon, caramel and spice infused smell but at this point all I do smell is some unrecognisable somewhat cold flowery scent. But I will try it out more and will do another review soon because in general I love the Charlie line. Tested Red today in store and it was a fab flowerbomb :)

soniamcalear

This to me is like Diamonds and Rubies-VERY VERY Spicy rather than Tresor-smells nothing like it to me. Started waring this regularly and I do love it alot. The dry down has so much plum in it that its wonderful. Once your nose get used to this, its just beautiful. Original Charlie will ALWAYS BE MY FAVORITE THOUGH.

mad.kat.96

I love Gold however I got the fraiche so its very weak with little sillage. I gotta try this in a stronger version.

Can someone tell me what is the difference between Charlie gold and Gold eau fraiche? Are they very different?Thank you

lisaivette

Fall is the time for Charlie Gold. This is my favorite of all of the Charlies.I know it could be easy to dismiss as a drugstore fragrance, but don't let the ugly bottle and cheap price fool you.
This a a comfy-cozy kind of scent. The opening is very much about the orange and roses. I also get a lot of syrupy peach. Dries down to a sweet caramel cinnamon confection.
For me, it is long lasting. If I put it on at bedtime, I can still smell it the next day. Cheerful, warm, and super affordable.

sazielenora

i could remember that it was back in earlty 2000 the first moment i took my eyes on this lovely oriental scented perfume. i couldnt resist myself from
spraying a bit on my wrist from the tester bottle. i felt in love with rare gold
almost immeadiately. all i can say is this is indeed a perfume that is truly
underated. tday i bought myself a bottle of charlie gold im so glad that the
smell remains the same divine as it was to my nose many many years ago
oh charlie gold how time passes by n everythin seems to change but u
remained the same. to all the oriental perfume lover u should get urself
atleast a bottle of this. its really affordable n worth buying. hapy sniffin

Jahzara

I love Charlie Gold!
Not only is it cheap but it smells so good !
My boyfriend say it smells like cheap perfume but I like it! lol .
And the longetivity is long! It last the whole day on me!

vanillabean23

An old school oriental floral. By that I mean that it holds true to the 90's. I found that 90's fragrances were heavy, not slap you in the chops heavy like it's glorious shoulder padded 80's cousins, but Charlie Gold is a sparkling, glowing, cocktails at sunset after the beach representation of it's era.

The bottle is a simple flacon that befits the fragrance well as the scent isn't overly complex or pretentious. It's like a little gold nugget that you can carry around with you if you so desire! If you love oriental florals, take a walk down 1990's memory lane with this divine little number!

The plum and jasmine resided on my skin for quite a long time, which is lovely. A powdery sweet musky aroma joined the flowers and fruit about an hour into wearing this one. The dry down was bordering on the gourmande side with the caramel, however, the sandalwood and cinnamon balance it out brilliantly.
Beginning, middle and end. Simple, elegant and fabulous value for money.

Aardwolf

Fifteen years ago Tresor used to be my signature scent. It was a very emotional period for me with some good but some really bad times. I bought Charlie Gold as a blind buy, but I found out to me it resembles Tresor too much to wear it without getting flashbacks of the bad old days. But I sprayed some on my curtains this afternoon. Forgot about it subsequently, and now everytime I think: hey, lovely smell! I get especially the flowers, not the spice, it smells quite different than the tresori kind of cinnamon on my skin. Probably has to do with (absence of) body chemistry. Longivity is impressive too.

jessbug

Unfortunately I don't like it. It's not because of the price, or the bottle: I was wholeheartedly hoping for something amazing. The comment talking about how this would sell like hot cakes if it was sold by a big expensive brand pushed me over the edge to buy this. I wish I agreed, but while this is not bad smelling, it has a very distinctive base note that just screams 'cheap' or 'fake' to me. It's a note I've encountered in several cheap dupe versions of real perfumes. Although I guess that's only a problem because I associate that note with cheap fakes...

Anyway, this is really strong, it has some serious sillage and longevity. I feel like the more delicate notes in this get way overpowered by the peach at first and the caramel later. It's not a soft, creamy, heavy opaque type caramel. It reminds me of low priced butterscotch liquor, the type that always tastes a bit too harsh and a little watered down. I do think my skin isn't doing this any favors. This might smell absolutely mouthwatering on the right person.

Too bad it's not me :(

Another blind buy from Charlie's range. Honestly, I didn't like it. On me it smells very spicy and a strange combination of a sweet caramel and something floral. I can detect a clove scent which dominates on my skin. But if you're planning to buy it, please test it before the purchase

janset

For me it's not oriental because I expect something deeper, darker from a perfume oriental. It's a real gourmand. Moreover it has the prettiest cinnamon and caramel combination. In the opening the sandalwood note is so noticeable that you feel it's a soapy fragrance but the drydown is getting so beautifully warmer and sweet. It's a mood lifting fragrance. Longevity is great, more than 6 hours. I prefer this one to The Body Shop or Victoria's Secret gourmands. When I wear one of them I always need more character, longevity and sillage but Charlie Gold is the perfect answer with a reasonable price.

AmberStone

can someone please tell me how this smells? like floral or fruity or spicy? i saw this real cheap and wondering if i should buy it? im 20 btw.

AngelaChase

The most overlooked and undiscovered Charlie perfume out of the whole range!
With Charlie blue, red and white being known as the weak sisters after the original Charlie...people stopped trying the Charlie siblings that followed. I feel Charlie Gold can make people rediscover the Charlie brand if people gave this one a try, and if the Charlie company stick with this kind of formula for new fragrances to come.
This does not smell like the other Charlie's because it’s not about flowers or aldehydes! This is the first of the Charlie line to smell like a high end perfume.
This is a autumn/winter perfume for sure and best for night time use because it fills a whole room with warmth and comfort, the way a fire place fills a family's room with love on a winters night!
Chocolate, caramel, cinnamon and amber in abundance! This feels like a mothers hug on Christmas morning. Thankfully the sandalwood and musk do not stand out, for that is a big reason the other Charlie's smell the same and very unpleasing to most, so this is a completely new formulation for Charlie and it’s about time!
It has the strength and lasting power of the original Charlie and Charlie Blue, but there’s nothing overpowering or headache inducing from this at all.
It’s such a surprise when you first spray Charlie Gold to know it comes from the same Charlie family, that you will buy it instantly.
Really does make you feel warm on a cold night, the way a cup of hot cocoa with vanilla sticks makes you feel as you take that first sip!
Lasts up to 6 hours on both dry and moist skin types so it doesn’t mix with skin chemistry too much!
Nothing about this is Oriental though, because there’s no spice in this or any Asian notes at all! Even though cloves, cedar and amber are very present, it feels more like a woody, velvet, creamy scent! If any of the sweet notes are present, it would be the plum which smooths it’s way in perfectly, blending it’s sweetness yet sourness very quietly.
Does remind me of the first “Gloria Vanderbilt” perfume in some ways!

kjaja

On the beginning the scent is strong and unpleasant like something out of 70s, but after half an hour it calms itself down and then all I can smell is sweet caramel, lightly woody and maybe little flowery scent. I love cinnamon scent, but I do not get it here, nor the fruit part. Or the cloves. Not even cedar or musk... Maybe just a little musk. However, caramel lasts and lasts, but it sticks very close to the skin.

Paraluman

The initial spray is a blast of alcohol and floral freshness with that sweet plasticky note that just makes my stomach turn.. this unfortunately lasts until the middle phase which is about 3 hours on me.

In the drydown, the synthetic note begins to disappear and a lovely soft caramel starts to peek through. A sprinkling of powdered vanilla makes it sweeter and warmer. This phase is really beautiful and expensive smelling for the price.. if only i can stomach the first 3 hours :(

ialwayssmellgood

I was afraid to buy this, even though I have a few other Charlie fragrances. The Red is my fave, so I did not think any other would come close. This blew me away! I don't really care for perfumes with a prominent cinnamon note, but this smells wonderful. I am so happy I took a chance on it. I smells almost as good as Charlie Red to me! Happy as a clam right now!
Update!!!
I just realized that this scent is a dupe for VS Rapture. I'm comparing them and I can barely tell them apart!!! I love Rapture so this discovery makes me smile!

PhaedraRose

This isn't bad at all ! Cheap & cheerful, but very good for the price- on me is is quite rosy,I mainly get spicy, ambery floral notes with a hint of apricot fruits. It is quite a warm fragrance, nice for autumn/winter days-worth picking up at the moment in the sales as it's going for around £3.99 for a large bottle at the moment, happy days :-)

caiomags

Good longevity! A good perfume at low price

ZELJO

this is quite plastic, but anyhow, I like it as morning fragance, I think it suits more men than women, in fact a totally straight guy from my office asked me about that one and ended up buying it too,I find that one very much in the 70s and early 80s style

PLUMPIE

This is a deliciously gourmand version of Tresor on me - more musk, more spice and delicious caramel but not in the burnt fairy floss way of many of today's creations. The cinammon and caramel notes are a tad too sweet for my liking and amped up with the rose powder notes become a bit cloying on my skin. I also highly rate charlie Blue as an affordable luxury scent. This is a cheap treat the 100ml is 1/5th the price of the latest fads and the staying power is amazing - give it a whirl!

Mooniq

A very nice surprice! A cheap scent smelling expensive. Great mix of notes and I really like Charlie Gold. I love softspicy oriental parfum's and this one is perfect. Light and airy and yet intensive. No sharp or edgy notes. On my skin Charlie Gold smells good about 4 hour- allright for an Eau de Toilete, I think. Great price, I'm happy I found this one.

Mooncatt

i_smell_good_all_the_time and Cisco are right. It is really strong, with somewhat of a plastic smell if you over apply it. I'm just glad I sprayed the first spritz outside! It's starting to calm down now. Once I recover from the first overdose, I'll try reapplying just a little. It does have some promise, and the buttery caramel note is definitely there. It would ideally be a fall and winter holiday perfume. If all goes well, I plan to wear a bit to an upcoming Halloween party. Hmm, it's rather pleasant at this point. We'll see where it is in a few hours, and how the second, little trial goes.
Hour 3, now it smells quite warm and yummy. It may not be my first choice, but applied judiciously, may work for some occasions. Sept 22 update: This has become a favorite!

AngieGCarp

This is an ADULT gourmand. Charlie Gold was ahead of a trend by what almost 20 years....I love that!!! So creamy, cinnamon, spicy with a hint of floral and fruit. The sandalwood and caramel make a great team as well. The price is EXCELLENT because you don't pay for a big name and a pink cutesy bottle. Charlie Gold is wonderful. It sells on Overstock for 10 bucks. This fit my bill in sooo many ways.

Niunia

smells like a luxury perfume. sweet, but not in the "teen" way. woody and sweet. good for everyday and soooooo cheap! I am gonna buy some more !

maiker

Lovely CHARLIE

The first time i smelled Charlie was in a store (paseo orinoco venezuela)the lady who atended me was so elegant, she let me smell 3 diferent perfume. so y didn't see the presentation, this scent is so sofisticated, elegant. i think OMG sure is an expensive perfume.

Y tell the lady, y dont have more than 600.Bs the lady laugh and said. dont worry, the price is 120.Bs for 100.ml :O cant bealive i never see and used this rare gold before.

10/10 REVLON I LOVE ALL YOUR PERFUME...!!!

Pari88

Delicious! I get a lot of sweet cinnamon and fruits (plum, and apricot), with a lot of sandalwood and vanilla. This is also slightly powdery with some noticeable cedar and violets! Mmmmmm... It changes so much; this one has a LOT of character. Amazing. It has similarities to numerous fragrances, but I can't pin point the exact ones just yet; as of now none in my collection. This is so yummy, it just makes me so happy smelling it! I feel so much joy in this fragrance; it really amazes me. Who knew? I will never judge a book by it's cover again! I love the fact that it smells so familiar and truly has a little bit of many perfumes out there. This is easily a comfort scent for the wearer, and the people who smell it on you. People will sniff you and automatically just feel like they knew you from somewhere, and will always make them smile. I don't see anything wrong with this. I love it! Yep, gonna wear this one in the fall! It'll wear so well then. Something about it reminds me of the golden and red colors of autumn trees, harvest time, pumpkin and apple picking, wood cottages, the first cool wind on the first autumn morning, and yep, halloween! A very homely fragrance, girl next door vibe. And....SO CHEAP! $7 for a HUGE bottle!

sharon1984

Can anybody tell me what the difference is between the au fraiche and the eau de toilette? I see there are two types of Charlie from every color?
