When I smell Shagya I think of the elderly, a musty old library or something along those lines. I don't sense anything particularly masculine about it and think an old woman could just as easily pull it off. Woods and especially Oud are two things that I generally don't enjoy so Shagya isn't my cup o' tea. Those other reviewers talking about it being "fresh" or having a "citrus" blast, presumably because of the top notes listed here on Fragrantica - I completely disagree. It's straight into the Oud for my (troubled) nose.

Rammer99

To me this is like a fresh version of Epic Man from Amouage. I like this better.

Fresh lime opening with a nice clean Oud. There’s a cloud of creamy, clean white musk that floats over everything. This is a lovely scent. Earthy, fresh and undoubtedly masculine. This is a year round scent imo, not sure how it would do in high heat high humidity, sometimes that will change up certain notes like Oud. I’ll give it a shot sometime in the south Florida summer heat.

Performance is great, all day longevity with a nice scent bubble that I can detect around me without a problem. I will assume projection is good too, hard to gauge on yourself. I pick up whiffs with 4 sprays around the neck for the day, I couldn’t ask for more. My favorite from PDM. Definitely a slept on scent. If you like middle eastern fragrances, or earthy, you will enjoy this. If you like typical blue frags and sweet frags, you will hate it.

First off. This is a beautiful fragrance. Perplexing, but beautiful.

In the opening you are hit with rose hard. It’s like you stepped into a rose garden, but it transitions quickly to a sweet, light musk, woods and oud. Beautiful. Worth getting imo.

It smells very natural. Not synthetic in the slightest. I do know the perfumer prides themselves on nature and I feel that comes through in this. It smells high class and natural. Nicely done.

This is a fine smelling fragrance. Definitely my kind of fragrance. It's a long lasting and inoffensive scent and office safe if used in moderation. Perfect for fall season but can be worn year around skipping hot and freezing days. It's woody, aromatic, with some hints of oud, fresh spices, and citruses. It has a dab of animalic vibe on my skin but nothing bad. I really enjoy it and happy to have it in my collection.
I don't get any similarities to Dunhill Arabian Desert BTW.
Leaning masculine.

Aizen1987

Opening is a mix of a lot of uninspiring notes, then in half an hour, it smells like pure sandal wood powder, which I liked very much.
I was surprised to see there is no sandal wood note in this.
Its supposed to be an oud agarwood & vetiver kinda fragrance, I don't get any oud!, or atleast it does not smell like any other oud or vetiver fragrance.
Other than Herod, a PDM fragrance which is worth buying.

Ok tried some thing new!. Mixed Shagya with vanilla cake from Montale. OMG after spraying that divine juice I wanna eat my own arm . The resulting scent is the cutest thing I ever smelled.

BigDurian

For me… Shagya is a love. But, it is also the kind of scent I only wear for myself.

There is a little sweetness in the opening... after that very little. It's a dry, woody, slightly powdery, very masculine, old-school scent. It’s not sexy… nor a complement getter.

I even struggle to think of an optimal occasion to wear it. Maybe... going to an art gallery, or a play, or reading a book at a coffee shop.

One thing I have learned about Shaya though… it smells better when exposed to a little heat. Not scorching hot summer days. But, warmer days or nights. When wearing it on cold days, Shagya doesn’t open up, and smells kind of like baby powder.

Importantly... Shagya's longevity is the very definition of "eternal". But, projection and sillage are moderate (maybe a little above moderate)... which works well for the fragrance.

Vitriol08

very unique in general and especially for PDM
strong but also subdued with a great balance between citrus, pine and oud.

Dirtyhoody

Wore this on a warm day and it was a mistake. Totally turned me off to the scent lol. It's still in my collection but I decided to give it a break and let myself forget that afternoon. It's not bad if you like ouds but definitely not something you wear for compliments. There are definitely better fragrances with an oud vibe out there. Probably why it's got no hype whatsoever even by oud lovers.

SkunkApe

I only sampled this on paper, as I disliked it too much to wear. When I sampled it, this fragrance filled the room with a strong sweet, musky note. I don't smell the woody notes that others describe, unfortunately. It didn't smell at all fresh or masculine to me, quite the opposite.

Faris.n

Great oud fragrance for beginners or for some like me who loves smoth oud note

Mina Abdo

Shagya is a fresh take on oud fragrances. It opens with blast of citruses and then it quickly dries down to smoky vetiver and oud. It is very mature.
The oud here is light, and I believe this fragrance is not for super cold days, rather more for spring.
I like it and I believe it is different.
Btw it is now EDP not EDT like how it is mentioned here on the website.

Siavashlotfi

Lovely unique one.Great luxury woodsy bitter fragrance.
not a playfully youthful citrus perfum, despite the shining citrusy opening...
I remember first time i smelled it in a party on my friend.he was dressed down in very sporty casual way and it really didn't fit him in that situation! Nevertheless i never forget how strong it was, and all night long i was feeling its bitterness in the bottom of my throat!
It is not a usual oud.But it's very beautiful and my number one from PDM.
Never blind buy it.
I appreciate performance as well.

Parfums de Marly Shagya is an earlier release from this French house of many hits this past decade, though there are still some older offerings in its catalogue that I’ve never tried. Shagya smells like a woody oud with a slightly heady citrus/floral/spicy mix that gives it some attitude, versatility, and freshness. The standout notes are lime, pink pepper, oud, geranium, vetiver, and cedar. The oud and vetiver aren’t particularly dirty, instead of forming the bassier part of the sharpness throughout, achieved on the higher/brighter end by the geranium, especially. It feels constructed like a men’s signature scent, perhaps a bit more for the colder weather than warm.

I quite like Shagya as a more year-round-friendly alternative to the also-under-discussed Nisean, a darker mix featuring patchouli and oud, but Shagya falls slightly short of Nisean’s richness/boldness, though this makes sense, given that Shagya is surely the more agreeable of the two.

Shagya performs very well, perhaps not as well as the stronger PDMs (Herod, Nisean, etc.). Currently the best price I see for it on the market is $170 for the larger 125ml size on FragranceX, generally about half of the retail pricing of most PDM perfumes.

It is a lime and citrus combo fragrance with woody and green notes in the background. It is not your typical fresh or woody fragrance, it has a very unique smell to it. The opening has strong lime and lemon like opening with fresh minty or vetiver combo mix along with some light bitter woods.

This is a hard to describe fragrance in which you must try before purchasing it. It has some kind of old school vibe to it in the most modern way. If you happen to like viking by creed, jazz by ysl, peruvian ambrette by zegna, git by creed, or himalaya by creed you will more than likely enjoy this fragrance.

The longevity is around 9-10 hours. The silage is very good, projection is also good for about 3 hours. It lasts even longer if you are in an A/C controlled environment. It is perfect during the day dress up or dress down in any situation.

Do not purchase this at full retail!! Interestingly enough this fragrance is not popular, so you can find great deals online or on ebay. I bought a used bottle 115ml for $70 which is a steal for this fragrance.

DominicMC

Great Frag, underrated, I personally think a Woman could defiantly pull this off, its Very different for Men, its like Warm, Woody and Sweet all at the same time, I wouldn't wear this as a causal, I think the frag has more of a purpose then that, But I'm struggling to find somewhere to wear this its not Wedding material either. None the less I give it an 8/10.
Try before Buy.

Parfums De Marly Shagya EDP opens with a moderate projection of citrus, woody, and green notes. The opening is fresh, bright, elegant, mature, and versatile. The bergamot, cedar, and vetiver and the opening noticeable notes. These create a fresh, citrusy, woody, and green grassy accord that has a slightly classy, mature, elegant, and professional touch. The oud in this fragrance is a “woody” as opposed to an “oudy” note, far from the pungent and animalic oud found in other fragrances. The pink pepper, guaiac wood, and papyrus are support notes, they place themselves two steps behind the main notes enhancing them with some spicy, dense woody, and slightly smoky accords. The geranium and musk are faint touches in the far back of the fragrance. The fragrance is linear, all featured notes come up as soon as the fragrance is applied and continue into the dry down. Once Parfums De Marly Shagya EDP has reached the dry-down it can be summarized as a moderate projection, green vetiver, fresh cedar, guaiac wood, and bergamot fragrance with spicy and faint floral accords. The fragrance average, casual, classy, diurnal, dry, earthy, elegant, formal, fresh, grassy, green, energizing, masculine, mild, moderate-quality, natural, office-ready, playful, professional, sour, sporty, versatile, woody, zesty, and pleasant.

Aqua Velveeta

The vetiver/oud combination in Shagya gives me the vibe of an historic building with antique furniture, old books, marble floors, and so on. A longstanding museum, library, courthouse or church. Shagya is not versatile, nor is it sexy. It smells the way I imagine a career bureaucrat would smell.
Edit: Having just sampled Amouage Honour Man, these two are strikingly similar, and they have a lot of the same notes listed.

Scotsman1981

Lime, agarwood and vetiver. The oils here are of truly high quality. Careful spraying on your fine clothing, it may not wear off as you might expect with a designer fragrance. The lime is what makes this addictive. As soon as I smell the cap and that lime comes through I just have to give myself a spray immediately. Once the fragrance is out in the open though that lime will recede and let the agarwood and vetiver come forward. I find that the vetiver seems to spur on the lime top-note for longer than one might think though, so don't give up on the lime. It is still there and is still very pleasant. I don't see this being a major head turner unless someone gets into your personal space. It is also a little pricey to be spraying oneself down liberally just for compliments. I will say this though for sure, if you like lime, agarwood and vetiver, you are going to like the way you smell ALL DAY LONG!

jellisunc

Ehh, this is medicinal and reminds me of a doctor's visit. It is blended quite well, but I can't see myself ever wanting to smell like this.

I could see an older wealthy man pulling this off at 60+ years that likes to play golf, loves a good whiskey (a little too much), and has a gold watch, preferably swiss made.

I can appreciate this one, just not for me, at least for now.

For the price in North American markets you can buy the original Kilian Cruel Intentions as a tester on Facebook perfume groups.

In UAE and other markets, the price is bit more honest to the quality you can expect....

You’re being taken for a ride by PDM. If you want quality look elsewhere.

SmellMyCheese

Opening of this is really great, the minty geranium really pushes through at first. Unfortunately this is not sustained for long, but the woody (very mild "oud") mid to dry down is quite nice too if a little plain.

Not bad, but not worth the PdM money imho.

cow paddy

First thing I noticed when spraying the fragrance was how oily it was. Maybe something to consider if spraying on clothes.

Overall it's fresh and woody with a nice citrus opening and a hint of sweetness. There is a bit of musk is the dry down, but stops shy of being a non-freshie.
The oud is a surprisingly strong player. Much like the musk, its present enough, yet restrained

Overall, this is a very versatile all year, day/night scent.

There are fragrances like a piece of art.
There are fragrances like a good friends. Good, old, reliable friends. No need to admire or enthrone them - you just want to be next to each another and spend time together.
Shagya is a latter one.
No idea why I was waiting for so long ...

The smell of real oud 10/10

poor_hommes_in_tents

Forget "woody notes" – You're going to smell like a damn forest wearing this one.

But if that doesn't deter you, then this is a great choice and overall an underrated Parfums de Marly scent. The nearly overwhelming blend of woody accords is complemented by sweet, spicy and citrus notes in a way that I just find intoxicating. I sprayed it hours ago and I still can't stop sniffing my wrist every couple of minutes. I'm addicted!

Keep in mind – It's probably best suited for formal occasions, especially if you live in the western hemisphere. I just can't see it working that well with anything on the level of business casual or lower. If I went to more formal events, I would totally buy this.

Modernised and excellently well balanced oud with woody and slighly spicy notes.

Fresh Oud Fragrance, not very unique but i got hooked to it cause i can easily wear it in any weather .

I got 10ml decant & soon planning to get a full bottle .

However longevity & silage could be better .

his was 1 of the first releases from the house and it appears that they have learned there lesson. Let's leave oud to Montale and let's make crowd pleasing safe scents. This is a total scrubber. The opening citrus/spicy vibe is tolerable but then comes the dry vetiver/oud/woody dry down. It's 2 dry fore my liking. I'm not saying that it's a bad scent but looking at their last few offering which mostly are home runs then this is a Anthony Rizzo laying down a bunt to third base with men on 1st and 2nd base while the defense is playing the shift. Sure it moves the runners along but I'd rather him swing for the fences!

xmelldefrag

Im on the minority here i suppose... I love this fragrance, this is definitely oud fragrance, however it is fresh, thanks to the bergamot. Usually oud fragrance conjures dark image in my mind, but not this one, this one is light oud, there's a little arabian touch here, but just about enough, and it doesn't turn the perfume too middle eastern-ish.

So yeah, in my opinion this one is great for daily use. Strong projection and great longevity.

i find this borderline offensive that i can only wear one spray, even that its still a bit too loud. until one day an SA taught me the way middle easterners do with oud frangrances, is to spray a cloud of mist into the air and walk through it, then spray some fresher scent as usual. i did that with chanel eau de cologne and it smells fantastic! try it today ull be pleasantly surprised

still, a very beautiful oud based fragrance.

bugsyiii

Shagya is a very linear, lite, yet mildly dry fragrance; Agarwood Oud, Guaiac wood, some Patchouli, Musk, and Bergamot. Listed additionally, are Cedar, Geranium, Lime, Pink Pepper, and Papyrus.

Upon first sniff, this reminded me of Parfums de Marly's Kuhuyan from the soft oud cedar combination. I also get a slight oily reminder of Mancera's Kumkat Wood, less the sweetness though.

Shagya gets to Kuhuyan's dry down much faster. Kuhuyan's beginning is puzzling and weird but the dry down is ok. The down side is that is takes too long to get to that dry down in Kuhuyan.

Shagya, a nice, soft, woodsy, faintly sweet, with a hint of musk type of fragrance. Not overbearing or sharp, yet mellow.
IMO unisex not distinctly masculine, at the same time very pleasant...

I'll be honest, Shagya is one that had to grow on me. I received it, wore it and was like "meh," but then I wore it a few more times and really began to appreciate the nuances this has to offer.

{This is so soft it is hard to determine if you are wearing any fragrance at all.}

Overall a great offering!

To quote a fellow fragrance lover: "While I'm not bowled over, I must confess I do like it." My sentiments exactly!

hafidzummc

i pair this with royal water from creed. what an amazing combination! shagya gives depth to royal water and royal water lightens shagya up to prevent it from cloying. match made in heaven!

at the right time (altogether) It's one of the best and most stylish fragrance you could be used.. // specially toilet version
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

dimsal

I agree with Kain's review below as well as the one by Redpula, this smells like the more wearable and overall pleasant "darker side of oud" scent in the company of M7 and Amouage Epic for men, even if subjectively less complex than both. Very well balanced, neither too sooty like the Epic or sweet like M7, starts just moderately smoky/spicy and then proceeds to a very mellow woody, perhaps somewhat powdery combination of Oud, Cedar and Vetiver. Nothing is overdone here. Sillage is good (just one puff on the wrist is enough to keep reminding me which scent I'm wearing), longevity excellent.

Sussudio

I sampled Herod, Pegasus and Shagya so far and unfortunately this is my least favorite. All I get is this sweet musky scent, very linear and a bit on the dull side. Don't seem to get any of the woods, oud or citrus in this. To be honest, sour is one of the words that currently pops up in my mind.

Sillage seems to be moderate.

Surely I can blame my nose for this but I also wonder if the sample is maybe off?

Speaking of sample quality, the 5 official De Marly samples I received aren't the greatest quality. The nozzle quality is poor and the samples are half full. Not a great introduction into this house ...

Luckily Herod provided me some hope.

personally seize the every moment of this perfume in my body.one of the best last longing perfume i have ever had( with 1 million). i dont like oud scent in other but in this perfume it's something else that i really love. maybe because of mixing with vetiver and lemon. on the whole, love it at all.10/10

Apart from childishly giggling at the name, this fragrance has a lot to offer. I tried it in Fortnum & Mason and was impressed by this juice.
A curious blend of woody notes which opens with a blast of lime citrus and pink pepper then a masculine body of cedar, guaic wood and vetiver. I've no doubt there's oud in there but I'd call this more of a blend of complex woods rather than a straight forward oud based scent. This is a lovely blend of notes to create a very wearable scent which without blowing me away was clearly of good quality and lasted well on my skin. I'd love to get hold of a sample and wear this again properly because I'm sure it would grow on me and go from a like to a love.

The contrasts between the ingredients are right...good but not great. A scent that does not pay the high price.

Shibor

The scent is well balanced. Vetyver is not sharp. Modest oud is well combined with papyrus and green notes. The sillage is rather weak on my skin.

The fragrance is good wearable for everyday occasions (like work), albeit it lacks thrill for me.

tymanski

this is a fantastic oud you can wear comfotably in summer. the cedar nicely offsets the oud while a bright vetiver keeps it fresh and lively; quite a feat! the longevity is a bit disappointing for an edp but since i got a great deal on this bottle, i spray with abandon (which is also unusual for an oud-based frag). great stuff

Hassan Nasrallah

i dont have this perfume yet , i may try it later ; but what took my attention is the discussion of the name , actually i knew that Marly perfumes uses the name of horses or their perfumes , this is sign of luxury and richness , if i am mistaken in the idea at least i am sure that "shagya" is the name of one of the best arabian horses , hope this make the name issue clear .

Nikslap

Exotic, spicy fragrance which lasts well over 7 hours with just two neck sprays. Expensive but highly recommended!

warlockss

i was wearing this and a good looking woman asked what perfume i was wearing , and i said SHAG YA she slapped me in the face .

ssmehr

I think I eventually find my signature scent. Shagya smells chic and masculine. I really like it and I assume I'm going to wear it for ever.

It is worth mentioning that because I have bought the EDP one I only use a small amount each time so it's not going to be offensive.

Longevity and sillage are both very good.

Redpula

I have it, a carded sample at first, then loving it, led me to purchased an 8ml decant. Shagya has a vibe of M7, also Montale Aoud Lime, slight but noticeable. As M7 has a cherry sweetness on it, Montale Lime with it's blast of citrus, Shagya has the citrus, the sourness and slight sweetness on its beginning. But for whatever reason, to my skin, Shagya resembles a bit with the two perfumes. Aoud Lime is cloying on me, M7 is wonderful to sniff, Shagya is a wonder, strong but less cloying. It is not sexy nor sensual despite the name, has spice, well balanced, transparent on its notes and will surely catch attention when not over sprayed. For a perfume with oud, this is one of those that is more versatile. I have tried 4 sprays from my carded sample an hour before leaving house and it smells very nice, never complex but very interesting. It lasted on my skin for 5 hours, reapplied a spray while at work and to my surprise, it ignited with the same strength as when I did 4 sprays. The dry down of my early application combined with my reapplication bloomed amazingly on my skin. The oud here is just right, a bit bitter but no medicinal tone. Shagya is great for summer evenings, fall, winter and four sprays on outdoor in a windy day would be perfect. Two sprays will still be suitable for work but has to be applied half an hour before going to the workplace. I do get compliments on younger crowd. Also it is very impressive to my nose but I am content with my 8ml for I have bottles of oud based perfumes. Shagya is likable and a definite try though not a full bottle worthy.

OMG the NAME how hysterically humorous!!!!!!!!
And the notes look absolutely beautiful for a man!
Now I want to sample this because I'm just awfully curious!

In Northen english slang language

"shag" - is , ahem .." the act of coupling between a man and a lady".

And "Ya " means "You " .

So - ShagYa - ShagYou
