Amour de Cacao smells like a cocoa dusted Terry's Chocolate Orange and it caused me to crave chocolate. I blame it for late night excursions to all night grocery stores around the turn of the millennium searching for candy, which you can't do anymore. I don't remember it being strong and it wasn't sickly sweet like later gourmands. It's powdery and vanillic, like hot cocoa or cake mix as another review mentioned.

When I was working long hours and did not have the time or patience to bake anything this provided an olfactory simulation.

CoCo77

Amour de Cacao eau de toilette from the house's Gourmand Collection captures Hershey's Kisses milk-chocolate candies in a bottle . . . or cocoa-butter breezes, on South Pacific beaches, that blow in mildly tropical, powdery directions. Comforting, airy, and short-lived, ideal on days that call for a subtler scent.✿

Longevity on me: weak
Scent family: Gourmand

Candyshop12

I have been loving this gem for a few years now and if your looking for a creamy lactonic gourmand but soft and like a cakey vanilla cream shop , this is it. good for layering too.

Ajk161

Spot on Orange flavored Chocolate. Good Sillage. I smile every time I wear it.

anamawsity

Really like this scent. It’s a nice nutty chocolate (I personally didn’t get any notes of orange), but it sadly faded within 10 minutes. If it lasted longer I would love it, but it makes sense since it’s an EDT, not an EDP. I don’t see much resemblance to Billie’s Eilish which is a deeper vanilla in my opinion. Smells quite similar to the first 10 minutes of Montale’s Chocolate Greedy.

pinkalpaca

Very similar to chocolate greedy, just less vanilla in this one. Also smells like the palmer’s cocoa butter products so it can go great with that skincare line if you wanna layer the scent.

Zethre

Creamy chocolate, almost identical to Chocolate Greedy, Def don't need both

nerolyan

Amour de Cacao smells just like hot chocolate powder or brownie mix powder. Open up a container of powdered Nesquik and that's it. This fragrance has the dustiness/dryness that is so characteristic of those products, and just like them, Amour de Cacao has a very vanillic side as well. After the dry cocoa note has gone, you're left with a very sweet, creamy scent that reminds me of cold chocolate milk, which, when you think about it, is almost equal parts vanillic and chocolatey, just like this.

Great scent from Comptoir, I think they should've marketed this as a chocolate milk fragrance and would have sold waaaay more. I feel like lactonic fragrances are very popular and sought after and this is right there.

I remember smelling the orange note upon first smelling, but I haven't smelled it since for some reason. Even if I try, I don't detect it at all anymore. As for the starfruit note... I can't tell it's there and it makes me wonder why they even bothered putting it on the label, especially since starfruit is not a fragrant or flavorful fruit.

mallowmist

So this is a straight up cacao scent. If you are looking for one, look no further. I wouldn't say it is very original, because I have come across many similar ones, but it certainly does the job. It is warm, delicious and chocolaty. However, bear in mind, it is not going to last!!! CSP scents are not perfumes, so if you want sillage and longevity, this is not the one. Regardless, for the price you pay, it is kind of expected, they are not overly expensive.

ginandrice

Smooth, vanillic chocolate. The impression is powdery and roundly sweet, almost marshmallowy. There's a kind of subtle wheatiness to it, too, like a boxed chocolate cake baking in the oven.

It's pleasantly cozy, but a bit too synthetic for my preference. I crave dimension and texture.

For me the orange is minimal, as is the longevity.

amgenus2015

This fragrance smells like burnt chocolate bark and marshmallows on me. It is a confusing scent, and I’m getting a note of something sweet but bitter - maybe something licoricey like absinthe? That might just be how the dark chocolate and fluffy sugar mix - my nose recognizes it as a bittersweet smell.

I don’t love this for me.

Sodastream83

Last year the Eilish chocolate one was my pick, but this year I've stepped up my game and this will be my winter "snuggle on the sofa with a blanket"- fragrance. I'm so happy to find a gorgeous chocolate fragrance that isn't bitter (Prada Candy Night-I'm looking at you!) or contains a coffe-note. To me this is very lactonic, I can smell the chocolate milk. This is just as smooth, creamy and comforting as you would expect and I couldn't be happier with it. Just be sure to let it macerate for a while before using it.

BONUS TIP: Layer this with Angel Muse EdT!

GinWeed

Upon first smelling this, I was like wow and thought that I had found a new amazing chocolate-like perfume to add to my collection. I sprayed it once on my wrist to see if it had any lasting power. It didn't; it literally lasted on my skin for only fifteen minutes, after which it wasn't even noticeable anymore. What a shame, because in the beginning it's so delicious. Just not worth the money because of the super weak longevity.

jean-marc sinan

Transparent, lightly shimmering chocolate fragrance. I think I detect the waxy / fruity / tart smell of starfruit as well.

Janna97

Smells just like cookies!!

LillE83

I love this scent. It’s such a warm, cozy gourmand.
To me it smells like the most delicious, moist chocolate cake naked with the richest high end chocolate.
I mainly smell the chocolate note and the vanilla.
But there’s a very subtile hint of orange in there.
I adore it, and I like to wear it by itself or combine it with other gourmands, preferably berry notes.

dj71

Super gourmand-y. Very sweet. The orange note reminds me of those chocolate oranges that are wrapped in aluminum foil and make it look like an orange called "Terry's milk chocolate orange". This is that translated into a perfume. Really likeable scent for gourmand lovers.

creamyandlight

Very weak longevity, and not very intriguing. Cacao is barely perceptible compared to all the overwhelming vanilla.

ArsinoeHelena

I rarely go for pure gourmands, but this juice works wonders on my skin! When I first tried it I was like "Oh well, one more artificial smelling cookie..."
But when the weather turned cool and rainy it began to smell richer, not a cookie any more, but an elegant full-bodied enjoyable perfume. A cheerful, up-lifting happy scent!
It's airy, light. The sillage is medium-strong, the longevity downright admirable for an EdT: easily 7 to 9 hours. I particularly enjoy the distinct starfruit and orange notes. They mix beautifully with the dominant milky cocoa drink note. I get only little vanilla.

GracieGardener

Good golly, this is delicious!
Chocolate and vanilla together in perfect harmony. Not very complex or loud but everytime I put this on my man always asks what I’m wearing. I say “amour de cacao” in a breathy voice with a perfect French accent & with a little smile…. just so I can see him visibly melt. Ahhh the power of perfume!

Malleable

I loved the brief opening smell I got with this, but it quickly dried down into a weird sweet clove smell on me. Not a fan.

Vellocet

So this came out 1997 and chocolate greedy 2007. Did Montale really copied this? (Jokes aside). But to me these are straight up identical. I can’t find any note that would differ one from another. A little interesting how both montale and comptoir sud pacifique’s bottles are metal (or metal-ish). Coincidence? 😉 either way I love them both. Amour de cacao isn’t a super affordable choice for chocolate greedy because 30 ml goes for around 50$ while chocolate greedy 50 ml goes for around 100$ ish.

Amour de cacao is an eau de toilette and therefore not giving beast mode as chocolate greedy does. But if you want that chocolate scent to project lighter then definitely try out Amour de cacao. It’s is super delicious and the chocolate is very photorealistic

natasha28

Yum yum yum!!! I really like this scent and I think a lot of others would too! This is a nice creamy hazlenut chocolate spread (Nutella) that isn't too sweet/cloying! It has the classic creamy vanilla biscuit scent that's been in all the Comptoir du Sud perfumes I've tried so far. It doesn't smell cheap, I think I like this much more than Mugler Angle Muse, if my memory is correct about that chocolate hazelnut perfume. I don't get any of the orange notes, and I don't know what star fruit smells like so I can't comment on that. Def worth a try if you are a chocolate lover! It'd probably be better for the cooler months due to the sweetness, day or night. I don't think I'd buy a full bottle of it or keep if gifted, it'd be the type of perfume I think I'd get sick of after a while. But I would keep a had cream in this scent, it reminds Myles of a chocolate body butter from The Body Shop in 2011/12, but that scent was a bit too cloying. Feminine, arm length/close to skin. A nice experience for the senses! I think I'd like it more if it was balanced with more fruit and some florals.

meldloves

The opening as others said, is delicious, I’d describe it as a chocolate chip cookie from a nice bakery. The dry down is softer and more like a chocolate bar or like carrying an open box of chocolates. I think it is a winter, autumn, cold day, kind of fragrance and it is only for gourmand lovers. On my skin smells wonderful, not overwhelmingly sweet nor synthetic, it lasted all night.

carmenandmonkey

I'll start by saying I love Choco Musk oil and spray.. it's an airy cocoa dusted marshmallow. I just wish I got the beast mode that some people get from it - so that search continues, and I'm knocking off the "this perfume reminds me of" suggestions. Anyway, this smells like the more natural and EDT version of Chocolate greedy - which is Terry's orange chocolate ball to me.

ChocoLei

This is really cute and I'm happy to discover that my 5 year-old sample makes the perfume lasts longer on my skin, helping the cocoa notes last longer as well. On me, Amour de Cacao is very lactonic, almost reminiscent of CSP's Matin Câlin which I don't like at all BUT here, the hot baby formula accord is toned down and less sour.

To be fair, I now find that the chocolate accord in this is very similar to Al-Rehab's Choco Musk. You do get fruity and vanillic notes from ADC but it still feels like a diet chocolate experience in comparison with Choco Musk. Also, Choco Musk has a really great longevity. Yes, it is to be expected from an oil, but a slightly aged bottle of Choco Musk will give you a creamy vanilla accord that I don't find in ADC. Both fragrances have low projection but ADC's longevity is true to an EDT.

This is obviously very subjective but I think that if you want the most literal and gourmand chocolate experience, get Choco Musk. It smells less delicate than ADC, less "shy" and has an ambery / sweet resinous backbone. However, it's full on drinkable milk chocolate and vanilla cream.

Now, adressing another elephant in the room (and still on a very subjective note): for 5 euros more, you'll get a more intense and complex experience with Montale's Chocolate Greedy. There are much more contrasting and interesting accords in the latter: the orange opening, the sweet dried fruits...

CSP's ADC is 90€ for a 100ml bottle, but it's true to its EDT longevity, especially if your bottle is new. Projection is low to moderate, it's more of an intimate fragrance. It will last for 4-5 hours and after a couple of them you'll only get CSP's signature vanilla. If you want the most in-your-face, mouthwatering, fruity and vanillic chocolate experience, get Chocolate Greedy which has a strong projection & great longevity.

All of that being said, I still don't think you can go wrong with ADC. It's and inoffensive and delicious chocolate fragrance. Fun for layering. Gets creamier and richer with time. Great for bed and during the day, to immerse yourself in a gourmand cozy bubble.

FRAGLORD3000

This is INCREDIBLE!! I am thrilled to find this and kicking myself for not buying sooner it's a chocolate gourmand lovers fantasy! I bought the discovery set and had. to immediately order this, it is perfection. Sure. it could be more chocolatey but to me it's a must own,, its got a touch of vanilla and orange(!!!!!!!!) but is mostly a solid milk chocolate delight! This will move to my topshelf favorites in no time. If you want to smell like a chocolate orange and are a sweet scent lover I highly. recommend. It is intoxicating and addicting and I would like to bathe in it. This brings me so much joy I justified buying a full bottle, like a liquid antidepressant! Thank you comptoir sud pacifique!

rurufu

This reminds me a lot of Body Shop's discontinued Brazil Nut! I've been searching for that kind of scent for years and now I've found it in Amour de Cacao.
Sure it's gourmand but not the sickly sweet kind.
It's rather nutty than chocolatey, but the chocolate is dry and hinders the vanilla in becoming suffocating.
It's a warm and cuddly scent made for the cold weather.

fantomette

This is really good ! It smells like the nesquick cocoa powder, pure vanilla pods, caramel and warm milk. It’s light, yes but it doesn’t really need to be stronger, as it’s strong enough to envelop you into a yummy blanket of chocolate-y goodness. I’m obsessed ! It’s a very nostalgic scent. Also very reminiscent of « Lait de Biscuit » by Chabaud!

sakuramyblossom

It's very similar to Chocolate Greedy, but weak longevity. Montale remains on my arm for 7h, Comptoir Sud for 3h.
Sadly, this scent always makes my skin itchy ;

Twentzel

Smells just like Chocolate Greedy by Montale.
It’s a gourmand, smells like cookies! 🍪🍫
I’ll wear both side by side to compare and come back later to edit my review but I could already notice that the longevity is not the same. The Montale one lasts forever! So far I like both and it makes me feel hungry 😋

AlaskanAngel

Next to the realistic CHOCOLATE GREEDY, this just smells like sweet perfume. It's fine, but wearing on opposite wrists, measuring against a true treasure, this can't compete. Decluttered.

Nounou9

I only love the opening of this fragrance, dark chocolate with orange flavor... shockingly, it dries down on me to pure cloves with a plastic note. I blind bought it & don't advise anyone to do so.

Motocica

For the first 2 minutes, it smells just a like a cocoa sponge cake (absolutely amazing, warm, deep and complex).

After those heavenly two minutes pass, you get a Pink Sugar type sweetness that lasts for the remaining 1-2 hours of this perfume's longevity.

In the end, buy it just for the indulgence of smelling this amazing opening from time to time.

krabr89

Fresh cup of hot milk chocolate with whipped cream.

Kirjk

Mmkay, might elaborate later but... Belgian waffles. That's the review.

katerobin

As another reviewer said, chocolate biscuits is the theme. I specifically get the German Leibniz Choco biscuits, with a lovely creamy chocolate note that gradually fades to a simple vanilla biscuit. It's sweet and comforting, and will probably feel even better in winter. Longevity and sillage are rather disappointing, I'm hoping for better results in the colder seasons. 6.5/10

OSM

Very milky and sweet. I get less of a chocolate chip cookie smell and more of one of those chocolate biscuits where the chocolate is kind of weak? It's there, there's a nutty cocoaness to it but I wouldn't call it a full-on chocolate. (The fruit notes are lost on me.)

FlyGirl81

I've had my lil bottle for over a year. At first it got a mild cacao scent. It was nice.

A couple days ago, my little niece comes over and wants to look at and sniff perfumes. I spray this one thinking she'll dig the chocolate. She wrinkles her nose and says, "Eew... Mint!" 😂 🤣

Sure enough... I spray it multiple times on some paper to verify... It smells just like mint chocolate chip ice cream! 😂 🤣

I enjoy mint chocolate chip so I kind of like it. (My niece however, says she's not a fan of that flavor ice cream so... Dislike for her.)

I just can't figure out why it has turned into mint chocolate chip ice cream with the notes listed! 😂 🤣

vulcano

I am so happy about this! I finally found my cacao scent. Even though the top notes only say orange it's cacao from beginning to end. It's so realistic I thought it would hardly last when the top wore off and projection died down, but it picked up and actually became a little stronger after a while, and lasts as well as anything else I've worn.

The other notes are wonderfully blended, the orange just lifts and brightens the opening and the star fruit brings out a subtle contrast that complements so well, everything seems in service of the cacao. And it's vanilla sweetened cacao on me, not cookies like on some other reviewers. I feel so lucky! :)

Galdie

I was using this fragrance more than 10 years ago, and my friends still remember it. They adore(d) it, and I did liked it a lot as well. I've smelled like a gourmet hot chocolate with sweet topping. Nothing artificial, 100% real quality cacao flavour. Yummy... Still mouth watering. It is a long lasting, very well projecting scent.

cheleine

To me this is straight chocolate chip cookie with a tiny bit of orange zest. That’s it. Very gourmand to the point that it feels edible. Very cozy indeed but if you don’t like to smell of cookies and feel juvenile or like a sweet candle from bath & body works, I’d suggest using this for layering other perfumes. I layered this with Mon Guerlain and it became a more gourmand version of the intense version. Yum! Also, AMAZING longevity on me, 8+ hours even after showering.

adoh

100% realistic, foodie, totally yummy, freshly baked chocolate cookies. I just love this because it makes me smell like a literal snack. Not particularly long lasting, and I have to put my nose to my skin after about an hour or so, but I mostly wear this just before bed anyway as a comfort frag so it all works out.

JerZgal94

I wore this to work tonight and immediately coworkers were commenting about how good and sweet it smelled. They said I smelled like cookies so mission accomplished lol. Fast forward to to mid shift, this scent was still going strong! Everyone was subconsciously binging on various cookies… myself included. For that reason, I will only wear this on “cheat days” so this doesn’t happen again. I’m planning to get summertime fine and this scent won’t help 😂

jmarie92

Sweet, buttery, nutty. This is just delicious! The vanilla comes through STRONG (duh!), but the cocoa comes through beautiful and transforms this from your average “vanilla” scent, into a wonderful baked good day-dream! It’s like an oatmeal chocolate chip cookie! Lasts for a long time on the skin too, and even longer on clothes! Quickly become one of my current faves.

Beanie1991

Smells like a chocolate chip cookie from beginning to end. Love it!

tandem_4x4

It smells more like choc chip cookies, than chocolate. Really good and a good alternative to Chocolovers from Aquolina, which is sold at the cosmic price at the moment.

However the longevity is as short as Chocolovers. Probably better to spray on clothes and hair to maintain it for longer than 5 min.

Iepurica19avril

I love it.a delicious inexpensive Chocolate fragrance. spray it on your clothes 5-6 times and it will last all day.

italiancandi

The first sweet perfume that is exactly how described. Smells literally like the melted marshmallows on top of hot cocoa, or sweet chocolate chip cookies baking. It may not last forever on everyone. Lasts a bit on me and I’m in love my favorite guilty pleasure scent ever.

JenJBS

Best chocolate scent I've found. Delightful! Sweet, but not too sweet. Highly recommend.

fanntonyoscar

Exactly like other reviewers have said, it’s an orange chocolate chip cookie smell. Even for the $30 I paid for a new bottle on eBay, it’s too much for a fragrance that doesn’t last any longer than it takes to devour the aforementioned cookie. 🍪 Not even exaggerating - idk how this can be called a perfume with such nonexistent longevity!

KylieBooFace

Like, maybe love! Very warm, sweet hot chocolate feel with a touch of fruit. I like it better than Serendipitous.

Vitodito

A very realistic, cozy and natural chocolate cookie smell, with some orange zest in the beginning to give it a slight different twist.

The drydown is more powdery, and on me it lasts really really long. I recommend to let the bottles chill because they get better and better month after month. One year after, my 30ml bottle smells amazing and performs wonderfully.

Finally, this was the first, the original, the leading chocolate perfume on the market. Did you know than when it went out, Pierre Montale worked in Comptoire Sud?
A decade later, he created Chocolate Greedy which is a copy of this, so honors where honors belong, Chocolate Greedy is a copy of this, and (just personal opinion) is also a more synthetic version of this :-)

katheryne_art

The opening smells like very realistic chocolate cookies. It smells exactly like Montale-Chocolate Greedy! However, Amour de Cacao lasts a few minutes and then it becomes a skin scent... This will be amazing as a bedtime scent!

stacia79

I'm koo koo for Coco Puffs!

fyetan

Chocolate cocoa puffs in the beginning, a little wheaty. I can't smell any starfruit - it's basically cocoa puffs, then a soft chocolate vanilla scent.

Very similar to Al-Rehab Choco Musk oil. Similar to Serendipity 3, but without the citrus marshmallow note.

Sillage is very soft after the initial 10 minutes, really a skin/few inches scent. I do smell it on my clothes for a few days though, so maybe try spraying it on both skin and clothing.

Balletflowers

I absolutely LOVE this but I couldn’t keep it. The initial spritz was amazing, yes, exact dupe for Montale Chocolate Greedy, but unfortunately that initial chocolate scent only lasts a few minutes. It quickly turns into a skin scent & the chocolate disappears, leaving only a hint of vanilla that has no projection power. It’s just a very weak vanilla scent. Lavanila has stronger vanilla scents. I love it, but I wish it projected & lasted longer.

ellimac

To me, this smells like walking by some guy smoking a vape in one of those crazy food flavors. It just doesn't smell that wearable to me - then again, gourmands are really not my thing. If you want to smell edible (/vapable?) you might love this.

Nataliemarie

Reformulation w/ water has struck again! A distant memory of what this once was. So sad. There was nothing like this around at the time & only a few have done it since. Serendipity 3 has been reformulated & Chocolovers discontinued. These fragrance companies have some nerve really. Thank goodness Choco Musk & Chocolate Greedy are still around. Even Demeter's Chocolate is more potent than this, less expensive too.

kikiena01

This scent is just so yummy! In fact it smells exactly like pure cocoa butter. Sweet, soft, buttery, very edible indeed.

The smell does not evolve much, it is very linear. Great for layering with other perfumes. The projection is not very strong and the smell only lingers around for a few hours which is a shame.

GREETINGS FROM THE CZECH REPUBLIC! :)

Mystinguette

I love most all CSP fragrances including this one. Amour de Cacao doesn't last long on my skin, but while it's there it's great. It's not an overpowering coffee scent, thankfully. I adore a coffee note in fragrances as long as it doesn't overpower, and this doesn't. On my skin it's a nutty, rich coffee scent. I don't get any starfruit. On the whole, I love it but I much prefer the original formulation. This frag was fantastic back in 1993. There was nothing like it on the market. I also adore CSP Matin Calin, Eau de Biarritz, Coeur de Vahine, Monoi Tiare, Vanille Coco, Vanille Mokha, in short, most of them. Amour de Cacao's Sillage and longevity aren't great but still FB-worthy.

Tessa03

I love the smell but sadly I spray it on and basically disappears into thin air... extremely weak. I wear it to bed as it is a very cozy scent. I do smell chocolate ... like cocoa powder. Sad it only lasts a few minutes. Will not repurchase due to weak performance.

Paradelle

This smells delicious and modestly sweet, a must-have if you love foodie scents. It's subtle and not outrageously floral and saccharine gourmandish. There are quiet milk undertones and a subdued vanilla. Some crisp wafer smell, like wrapping open a Kit Kat bar. Barely any orange.

Sadly, sillage is weak and it lasts barely 10, 15 minutes on my skin.

I wish I could drink this.

gelkita

What a disappointment ... it only smells orange and vanilla on me, zero cacao notes.
Do not blind buy, get a sample first...

cranky137

Too sweet, the cacao note is prominent only in the opening, unfortunately.

Since I am not into gourmands, I cannot find a good example to describe the scent, but it smells like baking :))

Quite Close to Chocolate Greedy.

schneeblume

This smells like freshly baked chocolate cookies that contain much cocoa powder and not so much sugar to me. Very comfy!
Unfortunately, the longevity is only medium, maybe half a day.
I'm happy to have something that smells kind of nutty (the cocoa powder) as I am allergic to nuts.

I have the aluminium bottle.

thecoffeeslayer

I started purchasing this this back in the late 90s when I had my first 'real job' and could afford food, rent, and the occasional luxury for the first time. This fragrance will forever pull some nostalgia for me due to that context. The first bottle I bought reminded me of Abuelita or Ibarra cocoas. So... this is a fragrance that can bring childhood or early adulthood tears.

That said, this stuff skunks like a wine (my other hobby). I've had bottle from the same batch smell differently based on how they were stored after purchase. You can have a waxy chocolate bar, a chocolate orange at Christmas, a yummy cup of cocoa, or something that smells like you put nesquick and bad milk in vodka. It's all the same perfume! *makes a face*

For the bottle I kept in a cool dry place the entire time. It smells like the brick you make hot cocoa with and orange scent. Like the chocolate orange after it's been opened a bit, but a dark version w/o the wax. In its best form, I do like love this still. But, I don't know that I'd love it this much w/o all the memories.

SunniB

Top note is orange; middle notes are cacao and carambola (star fruit); base note is vanilla.

Yum...Cocoa Puffs...nuff said.

If you like this, you should try:
~Montale Chocolate Greedy~
~Serendipity Serendipity 3~

jeffwithfrags

It's sweet but buttery hints too at the start. But yes, there is Chocolate and similar to Coco-puff but a little too sweet and faint.

Not a patch for me on the legendary Chocolate Greedy by Montale (of course) that has a more serious less-sweetened boldness to it's opening that gives it a very strong identity, especially as there is less of an odd citrus interrupting the gourmand notes and more of waffle and dried fruits / bitter orange.

This one was just a bit too off the theme I am looking for in a Choco scent.

Never thought I'd find a scent too too sweet but this might be slightly more appealing to women being so, with less of the coffee/waffle note in Chocolate Greedy.

Just about tolerable for me but I'd never go beyond another 2ml sample myself

My rating: 5/10

oschi

This smells 95% similiar to Montale Chocolate Greedy, but this ones softer and a little bit less rich. I'd suggest Chocolate Greedy over this, but the price of this thing is reaaally low. So if you don't want to spend more than 30 USD on a chocolate cake/cookie dough scent then this one is your obvious choice. Or if you think that Montale Chocolate Greedy is too much of a beast then this one might be your choice too. For every other gourmand lover I'd recommend paying a few dollars more and getting Chocolate Greedy.

aconeyisland

Playing for play's sake, I never check which samples the sale assistants kindly gift me while I'm still at the shop, I like to find it out at home, just to have a bit more fun. From now on maybe I should tell them "anything but CSP". Full disclosure: I don't like this house. Wandering around Fragrantica, I can see that it receives a lot of love and hearts and smiley faces with hearts as eyes but sadly my experience is different. It can be summed up by saying that their products smell strongly synthetic and all wrapped in plastic to me. I had a first bad experience with their Jardin Pops line this summer: sorry to say I've never found citrus colognes less airy and less uplifting than those three. Since then I keep on testing others but the general feeling remained the same: artificial was the word. In Amour De Cacao, plastic always takes central stage but I must admit that the results seem less disastrous to my nose: in its weird way the choco-plastic thing works better. The final sensation is more or less the smell of the chocolate melted on the plastic wrap of that snack you left in your car under the sun the whole day in August: sticky, a bit disgusting and potentially cancer causing but hey, it's chocolate. I understand if you want to eat it, so I can understand if you have fun wearing the corrispondent smell. As for me, I'll gift my three Amour samples to my niece. Nine years old ones should still love a good melted chocolate snack.

mothwings

This is for the most part fluffy sugar, bringing to mind marshmallows and sugar-laden cereals with the lightest flavoring of chocolate. After being worn for a little while the chocolate becomes slightly more prominent but it's still barely detectable. For me this scent is overtaken completely by a huge sugar rush. If you prefer your chocolate more on the dark side look elsewhere. If you want to smell like a marshmallow with a bit of chocolate flavoring this is IT. I will thoroughly enjoy my sample, which was graciously gifted to me--but I will not be getting a full bottle.

This is moderately delicious I think, a slightly plasticky vanilla and chocolate whiffs. A tiny hint of orange in the beginning, barely noticable. Unfortunately the staying power and sillage are both very weak. Chocolate is my weak spot and I have tried most of them, and this one is very similar to Choco Musk by Al-Rehab. I know people say that about every other chocolate perfume but this one is spot on. Thus also quite similar to Serendipitous which before Amour De Cacao was the most similar to Choco Musk that I've tried. The thing is that Choco Musk is so very much cheaper than both of them, so I can only recommend that one much more. If you want something stronger to satisfy your chocolate cravings, try out Oui Plus by Kyse Perfumes. I will test Chocolate Greedy next time, if it's stronger I will absolutely enjoy it.

Nice, comforting, warm. It's like the gentle sweet smell of your favorite chocolate-vanilla powder for the morning breakfast. :)

I don't detect any fruit in this and as it is an Eau de Toilette it fades away pretty quickly.

If you look for something stronger and more structured you should go for Chocolate Greedy by Montale which is yummier with dry fruit and coffee notes as well.

Amour the Cacao is also similar to Choco Musk by All Rehab, but the latter lacks the same quality and its slightly spicier.

Yum! I’m pretty sure this is what it would smell like if Serendipitous got it on with Montale Chocolate Greedy and they had a lovechild. Not as sweet as Serendipitous, not as smoky as Chocolate Greedy, and different enough that I will probably end up getting a full bottle at some stage, to add to my stable of chocolate scents. It’s got a nice toasted coconut edge to it too, even though coconut isn’t listed in the notes. I keep getting delicious wafts of this, and that’s just from a small dab on my arm from the sample bottle, which I put on over five hours ago. Actually, there’s no probably about it. This is a definite buy. Delicious!

hellina2000

I love vanilla scents and have been intrigued with finding a fragrance with a strong chocolate note as well. This seemed to fit the bill, so I picked up a sample vial. I get an immediate blast of sugary cocoa puffs that settles down into the classic CSP vanilla base. It's toothache sweet and very foody, so if you're not into that steer clear. I won't buy a full bottle, but I'm having fun smelling edible. CSP fragrances are among the only ones I've found that start out sweet and stay sweet on me, so that's refreshing.

Phantosmia Bella

Was really happy to locate this perfume in a store and try it before buying (I was planning to blind-buy this one).
It smells very nice, terribly FOODY (not gourmand, this stuff smells like actual food). The first seconds + on paper it smells like chocolate, then, on skin, the transformation is quite interesting - couple of minutes of "smeared by chocolate ice cream" (quite yummy, actually), followed by what I can only describe as "sweet cornflakes bathed in milk for a couple of hours" meets "store-bought chocolate cake". I must say that in fact I love the smell of mushy, lukewarm cornflakes, I just don't want to smell like them.
Very cute scent that made me quite hungry, yet I won't buy it due to it's overly-foody tendencies.
Not offensive at all, sweet and mellow, no skunk, I highly recommend to the lovers of the genre.

.
My FIRST spray of a brand new bottle of Amour de Cacao smells like butter. Oh wait, no, buttered popcorn. Popcorn is one of my least favorite scents to be honest I loathe it as a scent. I get no cacao no citrus and frankly no vanilla. But WAIT! After storing it upside down in the hopes that some molecule of chocolate, orange or even starfruit will rise or drop to the occasion, it was much more palatable.
I'm still not getting any orange or starfruit but the cacao is present and the vanilla is sooooo much better. Still a bit buttery for my taste, but if you love a cookie cake type of vanilla then you will love the Comptoir Sud vanillas. The longevity from the first spray was monstrous. I'm curious as to what it will be like now that the notes have had a chance to percolate throughout the solution; though I'm still waiting for a rich cacao. I'll update if I note an improvement,

catsngunsnyarn

Amour de Cacao is like snuggling with a hot cup of cocoa. chocolate, vanilla, and a hint of salt. sillage is soft, longevity weak. very lovely and comforting, but doesn't last. perhaps if i go nutso wiht spraying and bathe in it, it might have better projection and power, but i don't want to sicken those around me.

Eira Sol

The minute I smelled this I started laughing - smells exactly like my 90 year old grandmother`s favorite biscuits.

Old school waffle-vanilla biscuits.

MrBumblepants

I do enjoy this one. I just got it a month ago and wore it once but it seems like a colder weather scent so am waiting for the fall before diving into it. It definitely has a powdery dry chocolate smell to it. I think it would be too overbearing to wear in the heat of summer.

If you don't like food scents or sweet scents this is not for you. But I like it. And will be giving it some wear in the future

villey91

This scent opens up with a bang of CHOCOLATE WAFFER smell and pure raw cacao bean. Powdery and warm. Then really soon you can recognize a good amount of starfruit and orange rind in the mix! It makes the scent amaaazing, in my opinion it's impossible to not recognize the starfruit. It's so in there, it's the thing that makes this scent so personal and something that you won't find elsewhere.
Drydown: tahitian vanilla with cacao - fifty-fifty!
Sometimes the drydown reminds me of popcorn and sometimes incense. It's not chocolaty everytime! But always good!

This is the most unique chocolate scent that you can get! It's not just a gourmand, it's more oriental scent to me. Real perfume and not just a gourmand scent. Very sensual. And also this is unisex though it's sweet.

Montale's Chocolate Greedy is almost identical. A bit stronger in sillage and there's a coffee note in it. But I can't say that it's better than this!

If you want to make this even sweeter, layer it with CSP's Vanille Extreme. The end result smells really gourmandish: hot cocoa with marshmallows! This layers well with so many scents, just like many CSP scents!

Lasting power is amazing with Amour de Cacao. Lasts whole day! Sillage on the other hand is not that big.

10/10

I've been using Amour de Cacao for a very long time, since the blue glass bottle days. I remember trying on all kinds of scents that first day I found Amour de Cacao.. and going home there was one scent on my wrist that absolutely HAUNTED me to death. The next day, I returned to the shop and asked the owner to sniff my wrist and tell me what it was. Simply, it was Amour de Cacao.. and that was the day I bought my first of many bottles.

It is true that the scent has changed over the years. I remember it was much more orangey and had a more powdery scent. It smelled organic and complex and utterly captivated me every time I wore it. When I wear it there is always at least 1-2 people who ask me what I'm wearing and they want some. Men also love it. Some people say it smells a bit like a bakery.. fresh cookies.

I just ordered a new bottle of Amour de Cacao and I'm looking forward to wearing it. The new version of it still pleases me, and I have to say it's one of my top favorites of all time.

Autumnal

This is for the perfume in the metal bottle, so must be the old formulation.

This is absolutely disgusting, I do not smell any chocolate.
I can only reiterate Elm0505's review when they stated that "it smells like burnt hazel nuts or like a motorbike's skid on a hot road previously sprinkled with vanilled sugar".

I sprayed it on my boyfriend and when he smelt it he rushed to wash it off.

Just thinking about this smell is giving me a headache.

I must stop buying fragrances blindly based on other people's reviews especially as I have since found out that reviews can be deleted if they get enough "dislikes" . Which does not give a balanced view of a scent !

I don't know if the fragrance has turned, but please don't buy this blind....especially if it comes in the metal bottle.

glittergalz

I probably have bought more bottles of this than anything else. I never get tired of it. Nordstrom carries this line again! It used to be 80.00 but I can find it for 30.00 online. Every woman that smells it wants to know the name so she can order her own bottle

aristouka

My love in a bottle, there's always in my collection, i never run out....
It's a perfume that makes me feel good and whenever i wear it,it feels like home....
The orange is present at the beggining, then the amazing smell of cacao appears with a hint of milkish vanilla that makes it so delicious. At the drydown its all vanilla safe and smooth!.......
I can't be objective it's my love!......
The best cacao scent you can ever smell! Help youself to fall in love!

lilaczebra

I was undecided about whether to buy Vanille Extreme or Amour de Cacao as I had only read descriptions and was not able to test them before ordering them online. In the end I bought Vanille Extreme and chose Amour de Cacao as one of my free testers and I am happy with my choice as I found Amour de Cacao very faint and frankly, quite disappointing. I was so excited about a perfume smelling of chocolate and oranges, one of my absolute fave food combos, but when I smelt this perfume it was very weak and it smelt mostly of chocolate biscuits. Actually, it smelt like the powdery residue of crushed biscuits at the bottom of the packet, very powdery and a little like drinking chocolate powder. Not a bad smell, but not as enticing as the description made out. Also, the orange was nearly always absent for me, except for a few times when I would catch a very quick, fleeting whiff of it (and it smelt synthetic to me) before it would disappear, but it was not a proper citrus-y smell either. As for staying powder, very poor on me. Am glad I went for Vanille Extreme.

Paradelle

The sillage is so incredibly weak on me for such a delicious fragrace.

November 2014 Update-

This is a fun experiment- wear Amour de Cocoa on your hand/wrist for at least an hour, then run water over it, (very briefly) warm or cold, suddenly you get the scent of sour milk! Super odd and I have no clue what causes this. (I figured this out accidentally while washing dishes. If you're wondering, lol, and I did try it several times on different occasions to make sure, it never fails.)
That accord is NOT present otherwise. Yes, it's milky at some point, but no where near spilled sour milk in any of its stages, not even a hint! And its so realistic smelling! (The sour milk accord).
Now I'm curious what other pop up notes come up with other perfumes if I ran water over it. I sound crazy, I can assure you I'm sane. Lol.

Wearing it, you're hit with this powdery, dusty, starchy stale milk chocolate bits/remains. Slightly reminding me of the musty, dry white chocolate that's contrastingly creamy and musty due to the "basement accord" in Chanel Coromandel.

It's extremely dry for the first hit, that you sit there wondering how is this ever going to be a creamy vanillic chocolate milkshake that everyone claims it to be?

But it goes there. (A bit after it goes through the tropical/citrusy/orange stage.)

But this is more of a tropical feel. It adds a lightness/brightness that wouldn't be provided else wise. (The star fruit note is the culprit, known for smelling tropical/fruity with nuances of pear, and apples).
There's a slightly sour acidic tangy-ness provided by the starfruit. (Very fleeting although)
Interestingly its called starfruit, and to me it smells a bit like starburst. (The candy). The plasticky, fruity tones in starburst. Which flavor in particular?

There's the starburst original, and starburst tropical. It kind of smells like startburst tropical, all flavors combined- leaning towards the piña colada flavor. No, this doesn't smell distinctly coconutty, but it's the overall scent of a piña colada. That creamy, lactonic, slightly sour pineapple tinge in piña coladas.

There is a milky lactonic edge to the chocolate and vanilla.
(This may contain the aroma chemicals wine lactone, or Massoia lactone, which have a creamy, milky, coconut scent to them.) Which would explain the Piña Colada imaginary accord I seem to smell.
It starts to smell cosmetic, (ie: makeup) after a while. I'm assuming due to the powdery-ness, which is provided by the chocolate note. (I would imagine this is exactly what the Too Faced 'Chocolate Bar eyeshadow palette' would smell like!)

It's a bit hard to believe that those are the only four notes. Because not that it's convoluted, but there's just other little subtle nuances hidden in there. (Including a slight powdery white musk accord!)
It's quite "perfume-like" for a "classified self titled/proclaimed chocolate fragrance rather than a full on gourmand. Speaking of gourmand, there's a powdery sweet marshmallow scent to this. Courteously provided by the vanilla note.
And in terms of it being nutty, it smells a bit of hazelnut. (a dry chocolate like woody-ness, this also might be whats causing the starch like note in the beginning)

As mentioned in my original review, there is also a paper like cardboard accord that some Comptoir fragrances have. This stays throughout, but it's not unpleasant.
Revisiting this, it also hints at La Vie Est Belle. Most notably at first application. (With its nutty milky praline note). Theres that chocolate/synthesized perfumy patchouli combination of LVEB feel in this. (Only a feel, I sense absolutely no patchouli in ADC)
Another perfume mention would be Oneg by Sabon. With its earthy, dirty patchouli (same sweaty tinged patchouli of Thierry Mugler's Angel) and chocolate/citrus/vanilla combination.

But it's incomplex, straightforward, undemanding to wear, and not overly cloying sweet. Overall, this is one for layering if you're not too big on a predominant chocolate scent.
Layer this with Prada Candy atop a skimpy dose of Spritueuse Double Vanille by Guerlain.
A verbally silencing concoction.
(Amour de Cocoa first, a spray on top of it of Prada candy, then a spray of SDV on top of that, I don't layer in different places, ie: Prada candy on neck, Amour on wrists, and SDV on chest, this allows for a different olfactory experience although, for example; you'd smell them incidentally disunited at different times of the day)
The reasoning behind why I directly layer them on top of each other is because they all are moderately in the same "realm", that's debatable of course, but to myself , they interbreed and simply create a stunning conclusion.
The stunning result- benzoin overdose (with a barely there, minuscule chocolate "insinuation")

I also layer it with Chanel Coco by Chanel.
I dont know where the idea stemmed from, probably derived from my crazy inside fragrance voice.

Perhaps because chocolate has a deep, rich, heavy scent profile, and it fused effortlessly with the resinous, balsamic Coco? I always note that most chocolate fragrances get paired with a rose note (which coco has) and lots of spices, (check), citrus/orange to lighten up the dark suppressing/suffocating quality of real dark cocoa (which it also has). And amber. (What is Coco without its amber note?)

The combination of Amour De Cocoa And Chanel Coco bring to mind "Amber Chocolate" by La Via Del Profumo. And "Incense & Chocolate" by Ayala Morierl. Paired with ambery labdanum, oud, olibanum, elemi, and lots of resins.

But its seriously a match made in heaven. How cliche does that sound?
Pretty cliche.

Original Review (about a year ago).

(This is my personal experiences before I read the notes, at the end of descriptions of what I smelled, I will list the notes and how it was validated or not validated by the notes compared to what I actually smelled, I do this with all fragrances I test out so I can "train" or "test" my nose. With the exception of what the name of the perfume suggests.)

At first spray, immediately I get chocolate. Specifically chocolate cake. Also right along with the chocolate, lurking in the background, the cardboard note that everyone on Makeupalley reviews were mentioning in the Coco Extreme reviews. At first it’s extremely strong and potent, then all of a sudden, the chocolate note vanishes along with the mystery cardboard note and all I get for a while is milky, sugary, goodness that smells identical to Vanille extreme and a little resemblance to Vanille Abricot. Vanille Abricot being more focused on marshmallow’s. A few minutes after, you smell the chocolate note very, very faintly lurking in the background.
Validation after reading notes- Cacao in middle notes.

Few minutes afterwards, the chocolate note comes forward again and dominates the whole scent. I do smell citrus at this point. Something slightly tropical accenting the chocolate note. It’s a bit linear and due to this reminds me of Prada Candy in the sense that even though Prada Candy develops by sequence by a notable change, musk-benzoin-caramel, it still has the same vibe from start to finish. Like a signature scent lurking at all times despite development. Although to me, Prada Candy and Amour De Cocoa smell nothing alike. Just are similar in concept.
Validation after reading notes- orange as top note, Carambola fruit (star fruit) in middle notes.

I feel like the chocolate note keeps making an appearance then vanishing. Repetitively. There’s sugar, milk, it’s a little buttery, smooth and creamy. And contrastingly, the sugar aspect is a little sharp. Its also a little nutty especially at the first stages of the perfume. Dry down smells like pure vanilla extract.
Validation after reading notes- vanilla in base notes.

As for sillage, there almost is none at all, it stays very close to the skin as with all Comptoir fragrances. It lasts the whole day for me, as my skin holds on to perfume really well due to having an oily skin type.

It's a shame that CSP changed the formulation of Amour de Cacao (and keep saying they don't) !

I had two metal bottles before 2009 and I loved it. First, I smelled toasted cocoa bean with a hint of orange and then a long lasting vanilla dusted with Nesquick.

In the glass bottle, I only smell greasy Nutella. It's not horrible but really disappointing...

zenbabylove

Mmmmmm!!! Hot chocolate with marshmallows

Cocoa puffs

Vanilla flecks in Haagen Dazs ice cream

A tinge of orange

This is in the same family as chocolate greedy but sweeter

A must for chocolate & vanilla lovers.

FiaM

I have a few bottles of this.

Glass Bottle: Chocolate, Gormand, Cookies, Vanilla, Rich, Warm.
Metal Bottle: Sour (Starfruit?) Citric, Biscuit, Vanilla/Chocolate (swirled) dry down.

I fell in love the the glass bottle formulation and assumed all Amour De Cacao was created equal. They are VERY different.

MegaMav

Newest glass bottle.

This one is very realistic.
I make a triple layer chocolate pie on occasion.

Ingredients:
Chocolate pudding mix
Cold Milk
Whipped cream

This fragrance embodies all of that, and then some extra orange zest shavings on top.

The creamy quality at the beginning is very realistic.
There are some other interesting things about this scent, its has an iris or orris root quality about it that makes it powdery smelling with the cacao.
It has a Dior Homme Intense quality to it with the powdery Iris and Cocoa vibe. Iris isnt in the notes above, but it definitely has that feel and scent to it.
It also has a L'Instant de Guerlain Extreme quality about it with the powdery cocoa and orange note. This one doesnt have that "filthy patchouli" note that REALLY turns me off with LIDGE.

Its less Iris than DHI, less "fart" than LIDGE.
Good performance for the price.
Casual cocoa.
Try it!

raw umber

Amour De Cacao is a vanilla-heavy cocoa scent. It's quite sweet, powdery and dusty with a biscuit-like wheaty quality. It reminds me very much of Molinard's Vanille, due to the powdery crunchy feeling of the vanilla. It smells like those generic light chocolate biscuits which are more grey than brown in color, or like those rectangular cocoa cream wafer cookies which have an almost cardboard-like flakey texture, yet are so, so addictive.
Longevity and projection are both pretty good. Gets better the more I wear it. Also works all year round.
This is for the newest (blue sticker label, glass bottle) formulation.

anna.glowacka

It's very sweet and very chocolaty on me. Smells like warm brownies with pinch of salt. It opens exactly like Chocolate Greedy but it stays more sweet and edible without smokiness of Montale. Longevity and sillage are outstanding on my skin.

Cynicalwish

I've received it as a gift but I didn't even bother to open the box. I've tested it before and it's not to my taste. I don't dislike cocoa/chocolate as a note, but this one is just too foody for me. On the other hand, if you're looking for a chocolate cookie scent, this one might be for you. Even if it's not my thing, I have to say that I appreciate that it is sweet but not disturbingly so.

rosewithorns

I've tried hard to like this, since it's such a hit with others; I tried it in different weather and different moods, thinking that I was just not providing the right circumstances and opportunity for it to shine. However, after multiple attempts, I've come to the conclusion that I'm just not that into it. The opening is sharp and chemical. It gives me a headache for the next two hours, but becomes calmer as it dries down. Even at this point, I am left unimpressed. Although it is pleasanter now, it is not as smooth as I would have hoped. The issue, I think, is that I came in with the expectation that wearing this fragrance would mimic the experience of tasting chocolate, which I undoubtedly love. While Amour de Cacao does smell like my beloved chocolate, it always pales in comparison to the actual experience of enjoying chocolate with my taste buds. This fragrance may just be for the gourmand fans, which I am not (despite loving foodie notes or certain perfumes labelled as gourmands). Amour de Cacao lacks complexity for me, but perhaps that's just as well; probably, it never aspired to be anything more than a gourmand. Even as such, though, it falls short for me.

polly golightly

bobekecske

To me this smells like brownies fresh from the oven - warm chocholate-batter, very comforting, very foody.
Personally I don't mind smelling like cake, I wear scents to put me in a certain mood or for them to compliment me in my set of mood. I would use it with moderation and in specific occasions and settings though.
I can see the resemblance with Chocholate Greedy from Montale but I find that less chocholatey, I definitely smell ground coffee and it is less sweet, less battery-smelling to me.

TassieDk

@ relle: Maybe the one you tried had "turned" and gone rancid? :)

relle

It must be me. It started out delicious, but after about 20 minutes a sharp, synthetic, (almost cat pee like, (SORRY!)aroma ensued. The vanilla was there, but the dreaded c.p. in the background ruined this one for me. I'm sooooo glad I didn't buy this one on the spot. Try before you buy.....

cake n' cuddles

Amour de cacao offers a great dry milk chocolaty cocoa scent for a fair price. Similar to the richer chocolate greedy, amour de cacao is more of a soft dry version without dried fruits. I think Amour de cacao smells exactly like the chocolate cookie parts of an oreo crumbled up to sprinkle on top of ice cream or make a pie crust. The projection is moderate and the silage is surprisingly soft, making it snuggly and an easy wear which you wouldn't expect. This is a chocolate scent you could wear in a close quarters situation. If you want a stronger chocolate scent you might, like me choose to wear several sprays at once to enjoy a cloud with the strength of a gourmand like pink sugar. The versatility of the strength of this chocolate scent is adaptable and user friendly. On a side note, I hardly smell any fruits just chocolate and a little bit of vanilla. Amour de cacao is jolly and simple, don't expect much, only expect to enjoy!

rschmidt65

I'm not smelling any chocolate at all. To me this smells exactly like cotton candy. It starts off as pure sugar. Sugar cubes sugar. Eventually it does develop a creamy vanilla dry down with lots of sugar. If this were a decant, I'd think there was a mistake, so different is my experience from those described here. But, I'm sampling from a carded manufacturer's sample with the vial labelled "Amour de Cacao." Go figure!
Anyway, I thought it was a pleasant, long lasting scent with soft projection, ideal for those who like tooth achingly sweet vanilla scents, of whom I am not one.

NicoleET88

Blast of orange only the first seconds out the bottle. And then it becomes the exact scent of the moment after you rip open a pouch of powdered hot chocolate mix. Sweet, throat-catching dryness and all.
Very interesting effect.
I like this but it isn't anything I would wear to make a statement. It's dull in that regard. But I can see myself wearing this on the weekends, when I'm at home in my jeans and comfortable top, among family or close friends. It's pleasant, comforting and enjoyable, and not at all intrusive.
Not earth shattering, but thumbs up from me.

teresissima

for me the best christmas fragrance!

orchid_84

Amour de Cacao has all the hallmarks that I love about CSP fragrances. It’s a simple, sweet, linear, and comforting gourmand fragrance. It genuinely smells like milk chocolate without smelling at all artificial or cloying. It indeed has a kinship to Montale Chocolate Greedy – that similar sweet, milky combination of vanilla and chocolate is evident from the beginning. I don't really smell the citrus or starfruit.

I personally find Amour de Cacao a little more straightforward than Chocolate Greedy; the latter has a coffee twist to make it a hint more complex. Amour de Cacao is much more a milk chocolate treat than a dark chocolate one. It’s a crowd-pleaser, and one of my favourites from the CSP line.

EmilyTheStrange

Thank you so much to the lovely Fragrantician who sent me a sample of this :)

All I can say is that this is identical to Choco Musk by Al Rehab! The only difference is that this one is quieter in every sense (longevity, projection, silage) where as Choco Musk is a projection bomb that keeps going off for a good 10-12 hours on ones skin.

I definitely agree with the reviewers that say you should have some chocolate on hand when you wear this as it really does make your sweet tooth take over. All I want to do right now is gorge on a block of Cadbury's Dairy Milk haha!!

LeisaSch

The first time I wore this there was entirely too much dry and bitter cacao, but today wearing it again I get the milk chocolate vibe from it.

It is still a bit bitter and kind of dry, but with just enough sweetness from the citrus and vanilla to make it an enjoyable gourmand.

Def does smell like Montale's Chocolate Greedy.

Migotka

I remember a few years ago, when I was undergoing an intensive fascination for uber sweet scents, I craved for a bottle of this one. The notes looked so good: cacao, star fruit and vanilla. What can go wrong? I never managed to get my hand on this one, and forgot

And just yesterday I got a hold of a bottle in a department store. You can't even imagine my excitement. That was until I sprayed it on- only for my nose to be punched with a concentrated smell of Nutella chocolate spread. I smelled it a few times during the day, and every time I got the same thing: Nutella. At first it smelled comforting and quite cute, but in a larger dose, I just felt like I am smelling of food. Nothing wrong with that if that's your cup of tea, but I just thought it was a bit too much of a food association for me to enjoy it. I don't want to sit at work all day feeling hungry and wanting to eat chocolate.

Gekons

I feel like vanilla stick.

Our heatwave continues in Boston (or is it just summertime?), so I've decided to dip into my Comptoir Sud Pacifique sample collection. First up: Amour de Cacao. My experience with this house has been mixed, with more esteem for the made-for-men than the made-for-women perfumes. I suppose that my issue with the latter is that they are often extremely literal representations of particular edible scents, and I don't usually want to smell like a food item or beverage. Nonetheless, gourmand notes such as cocoa appeal to me, so I'm happy to give this one a sniff.

Amour de Cacao is a case of truth in advertising. Do you love cocoa? Then you will love this scent. It reminds me of both La Perla Eclix (now discontinued) and Bond no 9 So New York, although the Bond contains the scent of both coffee and cocoa beans and is quite a bit more complex. Eclix is creamier, but in the same spirit of sweet cocoa.

This particular presentation of the cocoa note in all its glory is not at all cloying, but it is sweet enough to count as a full-fledged gourmand scent. I'm happy to be able to report that Amour de Cacao is holding up well on this hot, muggy day, so I do believe that one of the travel-ready canisters would make a fine addition to a suitcase destined for a far-away land--or island--in an exotic setting near the equator!

Amour de Cacao is simple but pleasing. Not a groundbreaking perfume by any stretch of the imagination, just a lovely dusting of sweet cocoa.

Gingi

Second sample on the line.Absolutely horrendous!!! No words to describe.

thatsperf

I got this as a sample. I don't like it that much because I end up smelling like a Bourbon chocolate cream biscuit.

April5092

Dry cocoa powder. Straight-up, dry, sweet instant hot chocolate powder. I didn't get any orange. Lasting power quite good. The scent lingers and I caught a whiff of the scent throughout the day. After 4 hrs it smells like one of those chocolate-flavoured cereal, but without the milk. A very dry scent in my opinion. It's nice and fun, for the curious-er. I personally would not wear it everyday.

WhiteFlowerGirl

My first impression is chocolate cake, yum.
Can't stop smelling my arm.
However, after a while although nice, wonder if this chocolate cake had been in the oven a bit to long - getting the impression the edges caught.
States ladies fragrance, I could imagine men wearing it as well if they have choc-a-holic tendencies!

Momopii37

This perfume was kinda love hate for me at first. It reminded me of of chocolate mixed in with orange then something powdery after. I stop smelling it on myself but yesterday this random guy asked if i had been eating ice cream so to some it smells like of ice-cream or vanilla, to me at times it smells like chocolate biscuits we have in the kitchen. Liking it.

Edit:09/05/2012- Loving this, can't get enough of it now. It says on my cloths for a long time and makes em smell sooooo yummy. o > w < o

Habanita

This really is a big cacao blast. It reminds me of the instand cacao powder my granny used when we were kids. Anyway, there is something in the mix of this scent and maybe also the reminder of cacao powder that doesn't make it a scent for me.

butterbean

I love this scent. I had a sample -but recently decided to get a bottle to satisfy my chocolate fix.

Cacao is strong, but you get a lot of vanilla at the same time which adds sweetness. The star fruit is a little stronger than the orange, and definitely detectable.

Although the cacao is the most prominent note, I wish it was just a wee bit stronger. Don't get me wrong -- this is a good chocolate scent -- very nice. I smell like a divine chocolaty dessert.

I can see why others call this a dry cocoa powder scent. It's not overly sugary sweet or anything, and yes it is similar the way cocoa powder smells. But more complex with the vanilla star fruit and orange.

Délicieux

I tried a sample of this today. Initially, I felt that it was most certainly a yummy orange and chocolate dessert. (Really, how can that be wrong?) However, I was wondering whether one should really smell this much like dessert. I was wishing it was a bit more complex...Then the surprising dry down came after a half hour or so. Oh my. Quite a sensual, indescribable scent emerged. I like it very much now. Also, it seems to have fairly decent silage and lasting power. So yay Comptoir. You've done it again.

poivrerose

This was a FABULOUS blind buy! Soft dusty sweet sweet dry cocoa and crunchy vanilla meringue candy. At first you get a hint of the orange, but the dry down is pure sweet chocolate dust. I say dust because I do not find it creamy or milky, but do find it thick, hearty and absolutely satisfying. Like popping the top off a fresh tin of powdered hot chocolate with dehydrated marshmallows and taking a big whiff. It is just a really really pretty chocolate fragrance. I respect this cocoa. L O V E. The lasting power is excellent and the sillage is satisfactory. It'll be perfect alone or for layering. I think my search for the perfect sweet cocoa fragrance stops here. Glad I got the 3.3oz! Try it :)

Chocolate truffles filled with orange cream. Not very dark chocolate, but dusted with cocoa powder on top. Yummy, definitely, I think this is how Juliette Binoche would smell in the movie 'Chocolat'

kankri

Enjoyable and comfortable, close enough to be chocolate, but this is no expensive, fancy chocolate. Actually I'm not even really sure it's chocolate. It smells like Cocoa Puffs, not so much the cereal but more of the chocolatey milk left after the bowl, super sugary sweet and just the sort of thing to bring you back to childhood. Not dark at all.

I enjoy it but I don't think I will be getting a bottle.

Amour de Cacao is the chocolate perfume that I always wanted without knowing that I actually wanted it.

What greets me first on initial spray is a dense cloud of cocoa powder - dry, dark, choholatey - as if it is meant to be poured into a cup of milk straight away.
The scent develops into a softer direction, with a sweet and delicious blend of chocolate and vanilla becoming more prominent.
This is choco-lover heaven!

In the late drydown when the vanilla has vanished, a dark and slightly bitter trace of cocoa powder remains on my skin.
At the same time I can feel the tart and crisp aroma of star fruit in the background - a perfectly chosen accord that refreshes the late drydown and takes some of the density off which gives the cocoa powder a somewhat airy feel, comparable to 'what is left after the storm' (I hope this makes sense).

Amour de Cacao stays close to my skin but lasts for around 6 hours which is not too bad.
As said before, this is every choco-lover's dream come true in a fragrance.
Amour de Cacao is incredibly authentic and plain delicious.

Count Chocula ah ah ah ah (cereal vampire attempt at evil laugh)

This reminds me of the Halloween season as a kid, when Count Chocula, Frankenberry...and I think some other ghouly cereal were simultaneously rotting the teeth of American children.

perfumebox

Amour de Cacao opens with a nice hit of zest from the orange, but this passes quickly, bringing with it the warmth and roasted heat of a fresh-baked chocolate-chip cookie.

If you're expecting the smell of a rich, dark, chocolate truffle, you will be disappointed, because this chocolate is of the milky-sweet hot chocolate mix variety (or Cocoa Puffs, Cocoa Krispies, etc). Except for the initial blast, the scent sillage is small and stays close to the skin. This lasts quite well, but it doesn't stay strong.

Dittnergirl

Holy Mother of God. Sprayed a sample and thought I'd died and gone to heaven. This is dark chocolate cocoa with a fleeting hint of orange, pure and simple. What's not to like about smelling like food of the gods?

skitten

Mmmm, well this is an interesting fragrance to explain. As I am a fan of CSP's frags I don't like to criticise, but this was expensive, as CSP's fragrances are in Australia.
4 ingredients, should not be that hard to perfect??
To boot there are my 3 of my favourite ingredients I adore, oh what a shame.........
A pity they not list alcohol nostril hair burning ingredient and soapy remaining after effect.
I can't quite come to this one, trust me I have tried as I said I love CSP's frags, I so wanted to LOve this one, but buy at your own perril.
Has the mixture changed,?? as I received mine in a glass bottle (which resembles metal) and before, all my CSP's frags came in a metal based container.
I so wish I could love it.............

Coco is one of my favourite substances- to eat!

As the *main note in a scent however, it's really a little discomforting, especially when I'm in the mood for an Iced choca-mocha or something!

I much prefer cocoa notes of the sweet-dark type in the mids of fragrances- or as a fleeting base, when the top allows some movement to be created. Imo, linear scents only work with Lemons/Citruses for me, because as a niche scent you're essentially paying $100+ to smell like a bar of Lindt!

I'm not giving a rating to this scent, as it's one of those that are too simple and focused on an off-centre note. Also, I prefer it if perfumer could avoid always adding some form of orangey/mandarin note to these products!

lettyb76

It does smell like Coco Puffs and I like it, but it's too androgynous for me. I wish my husband would wear it though.

Hayven

This smells like Coco Puffs cereal in milk. It's awesome!

Norgirl

Hm.. this is a nice treat , but pretty close to skin . Off all the chocolate perfume i have tryed this is th weekest one and that is a little sad.. This is beautiful light and airy chocolate and vanilla mousee whit a twizt off citrus on my skin.
It could be a tiny bit more dry on the chocoa note. But not bad at all . There is a slight nutty feal to it aswell, very gental and nice . a nice blend . one off the best chocolate perfumes i have tryed . there is this and Egeo choc that stay closest to this in resamblanse off the ones i have tryed . so many off the is to dark and to much like angel . mixing up to many notes making the chocolat i want stay in the bacground . Oh.. and dont get me wrong I like Angel . but this time im after some cleaner chocolate whit a bit off sweetnes .
i would like to get my hand on a bottle off this one , for thouse times you nead that little extra cosynes off chocolat:) <3

justicecrow88

the open is a chocolate cookie, then i get almost an marzipan nutty.followed by a chocolate covered orange.then a light coco and warm vanilla finally it turns into a medicinal chocolate (very strange). i personally do not enjoy chocolate oranges and do not enjoy the smell of them.i will continue looking for the perfect chocolate perfume.i give it a 7 out of 10.Nice ,but not for me.p.s.it fades quite quickly and stays VERY close to the skin.

Izumee

Its very nice. Chocolaty. Comforting. Not sickening sweet. Creamy and uplifting. Smells like a chocolate brownie!

lovekova

Very disappointing to me. The delicious "WANT TO EAT NOW!"-smell from the bottle just turned into synthetic, old plastic, chewn-out candy bar stench on my skin. Maybe there's something all wrong with my chemistry.

cocobella

first i thought: wooow very VERY strong chocolate note. but after a few seconds it gets softer and sooo creamy. very delicious vanilla note. a perfect match. on my skin it lasts for hours. the best chocolate fragrance i have ever smelled. somehow "milchschnitte" comes to my mind when i am smelling it, but thats not bad (i loved milchschnitte when i was a child ;))

darkbeauty

Holy chocolate!

I didn't just smear the dipstick of my sample on my arm, I just slathered on a half melted milk chocolate bar. I was not expecting such a cocoa explosion! This is the most divine chocolate scent in perfume form. So close to the real thing on me that I'm not sure if I can personally feel comfortable enough to wear it. However, I might have to make an exception. My hubby who I made smell it, and who dislikes perfume, happens to love chocolate and really enjoys this perfume for this reason only. Gosh, just my luck the one fume he likes has to smell like a Hershey's factory!

MsRachael

Wonderfully rich, like a sinful dessert. The raw, slightly bitter cacao note reins supreme, and is beautifully sweetened by the vanilla and starfruit. In turn, it provides these succulent fruits with beautiful depth and texture. Nicely blended, and not at all the chocolate milk milquetoast scent I was fearing it would be. The only downside is that it makes me RAVENOUSLY hungry.

zabica

The fragrance itself is beautiful. I love the notes, and I love how it is all composed and smells on my skin. Very similar to Aquolina - Chocolovers, but more cacao .. Chocolovers is more of a chocolate with tiny bit of citrus. I can smell, apart from cacao, some nuts, like almonds or hazelnuts, .. it's so yummy. However, on me, it has zero lasting power .. once I spray it, I can smell it intensively for 30minutes, and then it's practically glued to my skin, for one hour more, and that's it. Very poor lasting power and silage on me .. I prefer Chocolovers, it lasts longer.

krissycat

I just ordered this perfume off ebay and I can't wait to get it! I am obsessed with Chocolate scented perfumes. I have Delicious Chocolate by Gale Hayman, Chocolovers by Aquolina, Serendipitious and I really wanted Chocolote Greedy but I could only afford a sample. So hearing this perfume smells sort of like chocolate greedy makes me excited to buy this one. After all these good reviews I had to have it!
Update: ok I received the perfume today and my only regret is that I bought such a small bottle! THis perfume superceeded my expectations. Hands down best chocolate perfume that I have, now if the lasting power is as good as it is said to be it will be perfection in a bottle, and I'll have to order a bigger size. I like this much better then Chocolate Greedy, at least this scent isn't so linear. I'm going to layer this with serendipitious and I'm sure together it is going to be incredible.

Happyme2009

This smells like a softer and less sweet version of Montale Chocolate Greedy. To make it short, it smells like brownie dough. Simple, soft, a skin scent that lasts fairly long, but it's very intimate; don't worry, you will not walk around smelling like you've spent the day in the chocolate factory. But in your close proximity, you will elude this desirable gourmet scent of fresh baking chocolate cake. It's worth mentioning that it doesn't have the strong orange undertone found in Chocolovers. I like Chocolovers, and Montale, and this one falls in between those two, watered down. Actually, it's less complex and more gourmand, voluptuous and attractive. I like it a lot, I don't see how anyone could complain about this scent; by the way, it has nothing to do with Angel - really, it's cocoa powder sprinkled over dough that is baking. Call it an ordinary smell if you wish, but it's fresh, warm and cuddly, and I like it a lot!
The bottle - I assume I have the new edition - is not metal, it's made of glass, same shape just a bit fatter, painted in a translucent silver, really cute.
I cannot believe my bf doesn't like it, he says it smells like chocolate protein shake!

Aureliev

kerini

On the plus side this doesn't make me feel like a little girl with all my pockets stuffed with sweets.
It lasts forever, up to 26 hours on me.
Quite simple, edible and comforting but neither overwhelmingly sweet nor too strong.
A yummy milk chocolate with a hint of vanilla and a really nice cacao bean and vanilla dry-down.

But not everything is well.
For the first few minutes I get a weirdly chemical chocolaty fruit smell, thankfully not too icky.
Then about 9 hours in the fragrance starts struggling once again, completely artificial if not actually unpleasant. It's only for a little while though. Considering the total life span those two lapses are forgivable.
I'm moving on anyways. It's bland in the long haul and didn't evoke even a single comment, neither positive nor negative.

Cereza

It smells very gourmand and almost eatable, but I doubt that I will ever have a wish to smell like a chocolate chip cookie of some sort. The other thing that annoys me in this fragrance - it seems very syntethic and almost plastic, the cacao smells somehow too chemical and it's hard to get past the first 10 minutes where there is this HUGE blast of alcohol which kinda disturbs me. After that, the smell gets a lot better and it's even enjoyable.
Try this, if you're not afraid of smelling like a cookie :)

floof

A cheaper alternative to montales chocolate greedy- they smell very similar. Montale is more of a coco puff while adc is more vanillay chocolate wafer with a hint of orange. I bought a small bottle on amazon for a very reasonable price. Lasting power isnt great, but im happy with my purchase!

joon

delicious, just like hot chocolate upon initial application, drying down to a frutier, drier, more complex scent on my skin in a couple hours.

daria79

I like it, I can smell all of the ingredients. This is a very nice and comforting perfume, perfect for cold and rainy days.I had one bottle a few months ago but if you use it every day you can get bored of it. It is good if you like vanilla but want to try something different. I don't buy again cos is not complex enough for me.

donniekaterina

Mouthwatering!Wow I feel like I have in front of me and smelling before tasting cookies with a generous amount of chocolate or maybe hot chocolate with biscuits.Never mind after a while I can also smell star fruit, that mess a little bit the fragrance on my skin.

perfumepromosince16

yum, yum, yum - in the early 90's Nordstrom in Seattle had the whole range and I never got bored trying the lot. This one smells like the best cafe in the world!

cmmarti3

Mmmmm Amour de Cacao. Smells like Cocoa Puffs in milk. It is delicious, less orangey than Chocolovers and in my opinion, much more yummy! I couldn't bare to go through life without my Amour de Cacao. Another winner from CSP!

SueC

I was so excited to have this one arrive on my doorstep from the U.S. Unbelievably rich and velvety and the scent stays true all day. Exactly the smell of the best quality Italian hot chocolate powder with a dash of rich orange and spice for balance. I tried it out on my teenage daughter who was speechless and wants her own bottle.
Utterly delicious.

chance25

This scent is soooooo addicting. It has a camp fire feel to it. It smells like roasted marshmallows and chocolate. The dry down is even sweeter and more vanilla than my Vanille Extreme or my Mokha Vanille. One huge plus is that it lasts on my skin and even seems to intensify with my body heat. Favorite of the line.

letestarr

Awesome! very gourmand! smells like chocolate cookie on me =)

tsipy

I love this scent, it smells like chocolate powder, verrry subtle, however, doesnt last much, anyway i love it, you can put all of CSP bottles in your bag and respray during the day.

Amanda79

Ordered 4 Comptoir's unsniffed 4th to review..
This is similar to Serendipity 3 Serendipitous but instead of hot chocolate it has more of a coffee or nutty smell.
This reminds me of hazelnut coffee/cappuccino w/marshmallows and lots of vanilla or whipcream! :) The orange gives it just the right amount of fruitiness but sits in the backgound compared to the other notes. Still could stand some power after initial spray but it lasts good and wears very close to the skin. I love all of these Comptoir's and I can't wait to try the others!

elm0505

Where's the chocolate??? All I could smell on this fragrance was a strange plasticky, burnt pong. When I tried this on my skin I had to run and wash it off because it was giving me a terrible headache. IMO it smells like burnt hazel nuts or like a motorbike's skid on a hot road previously sprinkled with vanilled sugar.
Very dark and synthetic

Cherub573

This scent is yummy. Initially, it seemed nutty and chocolatey, but after a few minutes it settled into powdered hot chocolate mix. It was funny because 10 min. after I applied this scent, I went to a restaurant, and the guy taking my order told me I smelled like Cocoa Puffs, and that he felt like going home and watching cartoons. He wasn't exactly hitting on me, he was telling me I smelled exactly like food. :P Anyway, it's a nice scent, but I wouldn't buy it because I'm not really into smelling like I'm stashing baked goods or candy bars in my pockets anymore.

Auguszta

Cocoa powder in its truest form. No unnecessary additions, no red fruits, that you so often get with cocoa. It is warm and cosy and comforting, especially when the temperature is low. After a couple of hours I get a light condensed milk smell that eventually turns into vanilla, which I'm personally not particularly fond of, but I still get a whiff of cocoa if I try hard. Simple, lovely and long-lasting.

Boggi

I like it. Like some others here say; its a very realistic cacao scent.

mlinde

I just bought this and was happy to find a retailer in Stockholm.
It's great for all chocolate lovers but also for anyone who likes sweet funny and carefree scents. I also love their funny bottles!

jeca

I feel nuts in it. It is perfect at the very beginning and after two-tree hours, but not in the middle, for me...

zoka

Ummmm I love this fragrance! It's soo special, very tasty but also very exciting.
