You’d think a juicy melon marigold tea-like scent would be awesome. You might be wrong.

In the same way artificial sweetener has that slightly funky-sweet aftertaste, Escape does as well (after taste, after smell?). I never really found it aquatic, nope, a melon marigold tea. It’s not even the bombastic somewhat cloying melon note at the top, or the marigold, which is to be found in equal measure along with peach in such other fragrances as Elizabeth Arden’s Sunflowers -where I kinda like it. It’s the combination of those notes with the Chamomile, and likely the cloves.

I can layer it (lightly or I get nauseous) with a couple BBW sprays to neutralize or water it down a touch, but damn if Escape doesn’t outlast them. It’s a decent performer for a cheapie, and there’s the rub. It’s one of the few Calvin Klein scents that just isn’t my jam.

Escape is the only perfume I ever wear. So many compliments & people recognize the smell and think of me.
Its a sophisticated yet seductive smell, can wear during office hours & into the night life.
I have given a spray or 2 to friends and not all of them have had the chemistry to wear it well.
I hate that its no longer produced and have to buy from 3rd party sellers.

I can't stand the harsh melon-oakmoss-coriander opening but the drydown (an hour later) is absolutely gorgeous. A mellow vintage-y summer scent with fruity notes that don't come off as a syrup bomb.

Purchased a full 30mL bottle for the cheapo from a sweet, elderly gentleman named Tom in Howard Beach. Shoutout Tom. I sincerely hope it wasn't your late wife's bottle...

(it probably was)

Honestly, Calvin Klein's Escape is straight-up not for everybody in the year of our L*rd 2024.

Some would say it's supremely dated, some will immediately sneeze and flee, and some will feel like they've been whacked in the nose by the strength of its opening.

However, I think the magic is in the dry-down. The florals are absolutely divine, the vanilla is addicting, and you'll realize you've got a much more complex scent on your hands than at first smell. Hard to fully commit to loving this while only smelling It on myself, need a different context first, but I feel like I've just hit gold.

I was in college when this fragrance hit the market. I didn't own it, but my roommate and several of her friends did. I liked it enough to borrow a spray a few times, but never pulled the trigger on a bottle of my own Fast-forward to recent months when for whatever reason, late-80s to early-90s nostalgia led me to seek out a bottle. When I first bought it, I sprayed it directly on my skin and did NOT like what happened. The fragrance in my little sillage bubble was quite nice, but if I stuck my nose to my wrist I caught a note that was just...off. A little sour or something. I thought perhaps I had bought an old bottle that had turned, but a quick check confirmed that it was OK. And it smelled so nice in the bottle or on paper! It was several weeks before I worked up the courage to try her again. This time, I sprayed it only on my clothing. MUCH better! A lovely experience in terms of sillage, fragrance and longevity. I don't know if this contains some kind of death note for me, but as long as I keep it off my skin it smells divine. Glad I finally pulled the trigger.

It took me a bit to 'understand' this one. My batch is from 2021, I have no idea if that means my bottle doesn't have calone since I read they apparently wound up removing it from the formula after it became too ubiquitous in other perfumes of the era. When it came out it was a novelty in Escape, and then it got tired, and so they removed it. Which sounds pretty stupid to me, but ok.

This reformulation, god only knows what number in the line it would be, is not nearly as nuclear as some reviewers write. It does last long but not insanely so.

Escape can be interpreted as this scene: you left your groceries in your hot car by accident. Such groceries consist of only a 5lbs of peaches and 2 vacuum sealed frozen tilapia filets.
Alternatively, you can think of the dumpster pile in a verduleria or fruteria, where the bulk of it is rinds of watermelon and cantaloupe + it's November, so they have plenty of cempazuchil/marigolds around the place. Limp, chamomille bundles in one of the stands nearby.

Someone here said that they enjoy it as a summer scent, and I imagine that was more or less the intention from CK too, from the name and promotional material.
I've been putting it on this past few days where the mornings have been a crisp 12-20C. And later in the day we get 34-37C. I think this shines much better in the first half of the day. I find myself getting borderline nauseous with it in the peak of heat, and that's with just the remainder of the scent after what is around 12 hours, when it comes and goes in soft wafts.

There's beautiful moments in Escape, where it smells kind of like skin, skin after drying on its own after a shower. Or after taking a swim in the ocean.
There's a savoriness, and a "humanish" musk, and a soft jammy fruitiness balancing it out so it's not perceived just as "sweat". If you lick your skin right now, say, your forearm, provided it's clean, with no lotions or fragrances or whatever, that taste is exactly what Escape can smell like at times.
As such it can be an intimate and comforting perfume. It did nothing for me when I pulled it out in the winter, so not the warm cozy blanket kind of comforting. It's kind of "motherly" (Yuck, that sounds unappealing, but I swear it's not). Don't know how to put it better.

The main characters are cantaloupe, peach, marigold, carnation and clove + that fishy, or "crab meat-iness" that I want to say is calone from what I've read about it, but I think that surely 2021 is too late for my batch to contain it?? I may never know.

I was on the fence about writing this down as a "like" or "love", and then I asked myself, would I buy another one when i'm done with it? And the answer is yes. Love it is! Unconventionally so.

Ah Escape! I’ve completely forgotten how much I enjoy this. If you’re an 80s-90s kid, you’ll get sweet nostalgia smelling this. I don’t wear it often but at the same time, I can’t bare to part with it. I smile every single time I spray this on me, on clothes, in the air… It smells of memories…the 90s, the summer, holidays, tropical fruits, the beach, innocence, youth, feeling alive…
It literally smells like happiness.
Makes me feel like every moment is alive with possibility.
There’s just something so special and magical about 90s scents like this.

perfumeninja

I get the urge to wear what I perceive as "summery fragrances" in the middle of winter. I'll condition that with the fact that I live in southern California. It has been cold and rainy though. As much as I love, love, love my spicy wintery frags, I seek change as well.

Anyhow! I'm wearing Escape today in the form of a little EDP mini that is pretty old. It smells wonderful. For whatever reason I always automatically start singing, humming Escape "The Pina Colada Song" while I am putting it on.
This perfume really does a good job of creating the feeling of escaping one's monotonous rut. The fresh melon-y or cucumber-y undertones make you feel fresh and clean as though you just showered in a green beachside garden.

I wore Escape one day last month and as per usual forgot about it until I went to put on my long t-shirt dress. "Dress" being the one I wear as a robe from after showering to dressing. The Escape had transformed into something almost unrecognizable from its original application. Whatever it was in that state, was divine. I hope it does that on my skin and is experienced by others because, well, wow!

Happy Valentine's Day Fragnerds! Wishing you your own romantic escape!

cats_eye

The new version is NOTHING like the original with the hinged lid. It's not even close.

Biljana Prijovic Milovano

Still smell like watermelon on my skin. Scent of happy moments, youth, and wars in former Yugoslavia. I just cannot be objective about this scent, before 3 decades, it was scent of happiness. Now, emotions are mixed.

Nandy27682

from beginning to end... all I could smell was carnation and wet cigarettes. I didn't detect any melon or fruits, eternal longevity though, I can still smell it on my shirt even after I washed it.

Patousas

I am sure this is beautiful for most people but unfortunately it does not work for my skin. From the bottle I get a pleasant aquatic floral but as soon as I spray it on me, boom - minty toothpaste! I can't explain it. It is stashed in the back of my closet and will be giving it to someone if they want it.

Surfer's Dream of Misty Melon with Herbal-Spicy Accents...

This classic Floral Aquatic scent by Claude Dir came out in 1991, a year which also saw the release of Point Break, the surfing film starring Keanu Reeves, Patrick Swayze & Lori Petty. The mood & tone of the film represent both the women's & men's Escape well, and I could imagine a scene from the film smelling like this, or Lori or Keanu wearing it on set. It reminds me of surfers getting up at dawn when it's still misty, to catch the best waves - has a misty, overcast & cooling vibe.

There's a lot going on in the notes, but this is how I experience them: opens with a burst of melon accented by a blend of chamomile-tea & oakmoss. As it transitions to the heart, the melon gets elaborated with soft peachy tones, while the oakmoss becomes a spicy rose-oakmoss blend and then a spicy carnation. Overall there's a soft melon fruitiness accented by herbal-spicy notes, but taking a step back, the whole composition could also be an abstract cherry-blossom depending on your point of view. Alongside all of this there's also an aquatic freshness that fits with the theme & name Escape.

My sister wore this back in the day, but I've always loved it too. Has amazing performance for a freshie, and a single spray will last me all day. It's a longtime love for me. Enjoy!

RivvveGauche

I have an indie perfume called "Sit for a Spell" that features a rich, juicy salted cantaloupe note with light florals and a distinct medicinal sage/herbal note in the background with a creamy, soft drydown. I've smelled so many modern /new release fragrances trying to find something like this--and wow! Escape is it. I'm so pleasantly surprised.

It's *very* 90s, it will instantly transport you to the era of DKNY first-woman-president ads, elegant minimalism, and a renewed interest in both the city/skyscrapers and cabs and bustle, and at the same time, French Country life with cabbage roses on duvet covers.

I find it absolutely gorgeous, unique, and expansive, and *finally* I find a perfume that doesn't smell like men's deodorant spray. I love the old-school bottle with the classic dark "apple juice" colored liquid as well.

Salty, powdery, tea-like opening with a sparkle and a distinct feeling of marigold flowers, then a gorgeous woody and spa-like middle note, and a mellow, round, womanly/mature feeling creamy and edible heart. Stunning.

Fragrancenotes2020

Tried this for the first time today and instantly was like this reminds me of sunflower. Came to fragrantica to see what others thought and boom Sunflower was the first on.

morphoevgenia

So much melon and some flowers. It is sweet and very aquatic in the sense of watery slightly rough melon. Apparently, I don’t like melon in perfumery. Because the 90s herbalisious, slightly fougere fragrances work for me - 1881 Cerruti (camomile!) or Poeme Lancôme (very rich floral with trillion different aspects), but this fragrance doesn’t. Overpowering melon.

My bottle is new, not vintage. The longevity is average and I don’t find it overpowering for people around.

morgagni

Just wanted to say I was around when this introduced and I remember smelling it and asking the name because it smelled like a candy called Wacky Wafers, fruit flavored, especially for the melon note. Don't know if they still make that candy.

rosa silvestre

There's a screechy note in Escape that I could never get past. This is strong, and reminds me of the 90s. Luckily I sold my bottle to someone who loves this. Just not for me.

unlitcigar

Absolute meh bottled! Somehow it works for layering as I do with other scents like Escada Taj Sunset or with Dior Tender Poison and get asked by people what scent it is, possibly not for Escape but for its combo with the other scents. Of course I do get many compliments surprisingly for Escape, but I personally do not enjoy it on myself, it is a boring rendition of marigold soli-flore to my nose. If you love the scent of tagetes / marigold then you may like Escape, but I do not.

Seaworthy

When I began my fragrance journey one of my first fragrance purchases was Escape. It was awesome then and it is STILL AWESOME today! Fresh, tart, floral. Unique and beautiful! I sprayed it on this morning and I have been absolutely loving it all day long. Perfect warm weather fragrance! So happy I reached into the recesses of my collection and brought this one out. I had forgotten how long lasting and fresh it is!

If you like Burberry Weekend or the early dry down of Dylan Blue or if you wish Sunflowers was just a tad more subtle in the dry down= this could be what you’re looking for.
For me it wears like a very nice sweet, bright hotel/vacation lotion. It’s lush. There’s a nice under layer of sweet warm skin that I wish wasn’t affected by the tart aquatic note I keep smelling over it. I don’t really like tart or sharp, high pitch scents- but what’s nice about this is that under layer… there’s a degree of warmth despite its high vibe- does that makes sense?
Personally, if I had to choose, I’d choose this over Sunflowers or Weekend. This one’s a little more well rounded. But don’t spray too much! -As for a Calvin Klein: I prefer Eternity.
I was hoping to get more of that “honeyed peach-rose, tea” someone else had mentioned but my skin is amping the aquatics a bit too sharp for my preference.
As a personal note- my half-sister wore this. She was 10 years older than me and was absolutely stunning. Back in the early 90’s she wore a lush purple lipstick and it was perfect for her… and so was this. 🤷♀️😂

On my slik coriander is prominent.
Do not blind buy.

April 1992 I met my husband, I was wearing this fragrance & it brings back wonderful memories of that time. Escape is very green & fresh it is the feeling of being 'Free' after the excesses & boom & bust of the 80s the 90s were all about minimalism, stripping everything back, and pure, clean fragrances and that is Escape. I love it. It is a masterpiece. High quality ingredients. 31 years later, I still have 'Escape' in my fragrance wardrobe. Bamboo, green, water, fresh, happiness in a bottle. Highly recommended. 🙏 ❤

MelissaKS

I wore this in ‘94-95 and I’m not sure I can go back. I think I prefer CK One.

dadparty69

very strong chamomile notes, can be kinda overpowering

Sparkleball22

I don’t know why but this smells like how watching The Breakfast Club feels. The familiarity of appreciating an art form so close to my generational bosom. The warm melon and something a bit loud and unapologetically bouncy and floral makes me feel comfortable and expressive.
Not sharp like Eternity. It’s fruit-sweet and rounded but there’s something fresh and dry too. Very grown up.
Maybe one of my friends or high school teachers wore this?
This is a little like Burberry Weekend but I think that one wins in this category for me. I am slowly using my sample on days when my nose needs a nostalgia break! Really iconic and pretty perfume.

chimidoro

Rainy day British florals.

I had a vintage bottle of this and couldn't get past something in there that smelled like beer or lager. A boozy, resinous, masculine leaning note.

I gave my vintage bottle away and recently decided I'd like to try the current formula, hoping that the boozy element of the scent wouldn't be present in a new bottle. Well, it is. The newest bottle smells like beer to me as well. Actually it's sort of like a grassy beer garden.
I smell grass and booze. (A British pub? 🍻 😂)

As it settles it's actually a really nice scent, it just doesn't feel like it's my scent. Not for me.
I felt the same way about Eternity. Really great scent, but not for me.
Skyscrapers after rain. An urban jungle.
They're certainly of a type, together. Escape is in that direction, with Eternity, as opposed to, say, the direction of OBSESSION. They're not to be compared.

I can smell the chamomile here quite strongly. Orange toned flowers, marigold and chamomile.
In fact, the top voted notes kinda ring true in this case, except that the so-called melon is not as present in this as I feel it was in the original formulation.
The current formula still really packs a punch but it's not as strong or dense as the vintage.
I would say this smells less like Issey Miyake than the original did.

I would definitely call this unisex. A soapy, fresh, unisex scent with good depth and presence. Aromatic.
Pretty distinct, even now.

Berryyyyyyyyy567

My dad gifted me this, it's a nice perfume, i feel like the note i keep smelling all the time is melon, the sillage is enormous, i sprayed it once in the air in the morning inside my room and now it's evening and i can still smell it just fine, longitivity is also great. Definitely a summer perfume.

smccmurphy

Not sure how I feel about this. As a 90s baby this smells like a childhood friends mom. I get a strong musky melon. It’s certainly nostalgic but I’m not sure it’s for me.

RoGo72

I first smelled Escape back in the mid 90s. Since I was more into oriental scents it didn’t fit my scent preference. I didn’t hate it or think it smelled awful, it just wasn’t a scent I craved to own. Early on after I started dating my husband (1997) I learned he loved Escape. He suggested I start wearing it. Because he enjoyed it, I convinced myself I could enjoy it too. After a while it did grow on me. I can’t say I loved it, but I did like it enough to continue to wear it. To my nose it’s a fruity aquatic with a hint of florals. It has decent projection & longevity. I still have a bottle in my collection (reformulated but still smells the same as the OG), but I rarely reach for it. I have too many other fragrances I prefer more. I almost feel obligated to keep it, because I wore it for years. It has sentimental value!

Tina_Banks

On me, the notes that come out the strongest are the peach and rose. I get a diluted version of Guerlain's Nahema on my skin. It has that 90s fruity floral scent quality about it that is gentle, feminine, and refreshing. I keep thinking of 90s floral patterns, between chintz curtains and wallpaper, plus silk blouses and pencil skirts. This smells like a fragrance that would work well between the day into night, between the workday in the office through a dinner date out. It's beautiful and elegant.

arizonaruby

This isn’t really what I expected. It’s labelled as a floral aquatic but I don’t smell it as aquatic at all. Rather, it has a bit of a dusty, earthy, vintage vibe - kind of like a posy of dried flowers. There is an overwhelming amount of notes but I’d say probably the chamomile, oakmoss or carnation are strongest. It’s not really fresh or fruity and I can’t smell notes like apple, mandarin or lychee at all. It’s interesting but not a love.

tudorsmells

this perfume is so complex and layered that all the notes just blend into one confusing, spicy, airy note. it is pretty and unique and it gets me compliments but definitely not the safest blind buy. extremely unisex too.

no1babygirl

the first perfume i've had a super adverse reaction to. vile both in the air and on my skin

ntabassum92

Escape does smell similar to Sunflowers, but it is less tart fruity in the opening, the peach is not as strong as the sweet, cool, melon note. I do smell tart peach in the mid, but the overall perfume is less bright, and more earthy. Escape also has a distinct vintage chypre vibe - I really smell the oakmoss in this perfume, as well as those more herbal smelling flowers, such as chamomile and marigold. I also smell a girly pink rose. It's lovely. I don't usually love a melon perfume, but with the deeper elements to this composition, I find this has some character. It's most strong in the first three hours of wear, after that it gets much lighter and sweeter, with the vanilla and amber coming out more, but they are very light, not strong and deep. I bet it used to be much stronger, as a chypre usually would have been. If you like Sunflowers, I would get this one, even though they are not the same - just because this at least will project for the first few hours, whereas Sunflowers used to depart my skin within 30 minutes.

Goofy79

Going to buy it again soon. I never get tired of this or any perfumes from the 90's 👌

AuthenticAF

I really do not like this and i have no reason why. I think it may be the melon? There isnt many perfumes i have a visceral reaction to, but this is one i just do not enjoy at all.

Cynthia30

Is this similar to Byredo Bal DAfrique ?

Unruly Julie

This review is for a purchase that was supposed to be the vintage, original Escape formula.
I went ahead and sprayed this on fairly heavy the first time, as I am a chronic over sprayer! A lot of reviews talk about a melon and aquatic note, but I don't really get that. To me, it smells like dried herbs and flowers. Specifically chamomile and Marigold. I also get notes of fresh aromatic flowers and herbs. It does have an underlying sweetness and freshness to it that I really like. It smells like a very warm, sunny afternoon in a vast herb and flower garden. A little dry, but also sweet and green, with someone watering nearby with a hose or watering can. It's different and unique and I like it very much!
EDIT LATER IN THE DAY: I am slightly disappointed, as to me the dry down is not as unique as the first several hours. I would have been more pleased if that phase had lasted longer. I still enjoy it very much though.

amg7613

I’m associating this perfume with a heavy smoker in my childhood. I don’t even know who it is. I can’t stand it! I smell this and visualize walking into a smoky house in 1993 with mauve carpet, and a bowl of potpourri in the bathroom. Someone in the background is hacking up a lung. I think it could potentially smell good, even if it’s a little dated (this is not timeless, it’s very early 90s) - but noooo not for me!

Annemarie

Holy 1990s!

In the mid-90s I was in a fallow period perfume-wise and did not get to the mall very much. When I did I was astounded at the new-release perfumes. What was this weird, dry, cold, synthetic note I smelled out of every second bottle? I was disgusted. I could not put a name to it because it was like nothing else I'd ever smelled and it was not until the internet came along that I learned what 'calone' was.

In recent years and after much more smelling experience I have slowly come to appreciate the perfumes of that era a little more. After the excesses of the 80s, the world was ready for calone; I understand that now.

Where CK's Escape would once have had me me weeping with rage and despair, I can now accept it as 'pleasant'. The opening is more than pleasant - it's quite lovely really, with its burst of green floral notes, a little juicy but not as green and sappy as CK Truth (my favourite CK fragrance). It gets dryer as it develops and I lose interest somewhat, but it's wearable and interesting. I like the sense of distance and cool abstraction. I have always loved abstraction in perfume (never having been one for soliflores). The chamomile note becomes more obvious as time goes on.

Ultimately I think I was right to trust my aversion to melony and oceanic perfumes. My skin doesn't love them and they may never be for me. But I'm always glad to revise my earlier opinions of fragrances. It's what makes this hobby interesting.

GirlOnFire

Imagine if Thierry Mugler had created Womanity in 1991 but with a base of musk, sandalwood, and vanilla. This is much closer in concept to Womanity than, say, Christian Dior’s Dune.

BigBobRoss

Very green smells like herbs you pick from a garden

Not very pleasant

Longevity and sillage is above average

K3lli3

Unfortunately didn't like this perfume. To me, it smelt exactly like those fresheners that u put in your toilet. What a shame!

toastperfume

I have the reformulated version and, in all honesty, it smells like musty grandpa to me (no offence to grandpas in general, just that specific couch potato grandpa who’s gone nose blind to his own smell). For some reason my nose isn’t catching the melon or all the other lovely things that everyone else was mentioning… I really hoped I would like it, it was my fault for blind buying it though haha. My mum liked the notes so I thought hey, what’s the harm? Goodness, one spray KO’d my nostrils. Perhaps the older version was better, as a lot of people seem to like it! Thing is though, I made some of my friends smell the patch I sprayed on my arm and they all liked it? Maybe it’s just me overreacting? Someone even told me I was trying to get a compliment from them (embarrassing for me) but in reality I was scrubbing my arm trying to get rid of it in the morning. It’s strong in terms of longevity, moderate sillage - wish it was more fresh and crispy like I hoped it would be!

Margarita23

A classic! Still smells amazing after it's launch 30 years ago, an ex-boyfriend who is an expert on fragrance picked this for me and said it's almost like this frag was made for me! And it's true, I get the most compliments every time I wear it. It's a complex combo of many notes which is unusual, as too many facets can make a fragrance smell a bit weird but this is a beautiful blend. I wear it all year round, it's great for casual or formal occasions, in summer it smells fresh, in winter it smells warm, it's a successful blend of several fresh, fruity, floral notes without being overly sweet. It was expensive when launched like all designer frags are, but has come down to a fraction of the original price, making it excellent value. I always have a bottle of Escape open!

MandalaaXO

This is my first perfume review and also my first perfume. My grandma bought this for me when I was 18 in 2003. I remember her telling me this was a very mature perfume for my age. I didn't know what that meant and I didn't care. I wanted this perfume so bad since my trip to visit family in Virginia in 1997. My aunt wore this perfume and I could not get enough. When we left, I asked her to spray it all over my sweater and I smelled that sweater hanging in my closet for MONTHS.

20 years later and I still have half that bottle. I had a few perfumes when I abruptly left my ex 11 years ago, but this was the only one I made sure to grab since it had so much sentimental value.

This a complex scent to me. I have a very untrained nose, but I've never smelt anything quite like this. When I close my eyes, I can smell this scent in my head. You never forget it. I've haven't smelled the reformulated, but I would make sure to buy a vintage formula, you can find some affordable on Mercari.

Nosyla

Escape was my perfume during the 90s when I was a teenager. Now in my 40s I bought a bottle for a reasonable price, purely for nostalgia. The reformulation smells the same, distinctively melon, but my goodness it gives me an instant headache. This is powerful stuff. My teenage daughters love it, of course, and I’m happy to pass it to them for them to be nostalgic about it one day too.

Red Jaguar

Opening is offputting to me. I get dry spicy, herbal vibes and pungent cantaloupe rind. It starts to mellow out after 10 minutes or so. Slowly it turns into a watery vibe, I don't know why, but yes there is an aquatic feel, maybe it's the apple. I'm trying this on my skin on a cool rainy spring day. I get the feeling that weather and temperature would have a strong affect on this perfumes performance. It only reminds me of EAs Sunflowers in it's strong opening with melon and oak moss. But the dry down goes down a much different path. Sunflowers take you on a path that leads to a field of warm flowers, while Escape takes you through a narrow pathway to the beach. I respect the richness of this perfume and it's uniqueness. 20 minutes in or so it becomes sweet cantaloupe. Exactly like cutting into a fresh fruit. The rose, carnation and jasmine are starting to enter the room and the cloves are lurking.

Escape was my main signature scent in the mid 90s (along with CK's Eternity). I started rewearing Escape since 2019. It's now made by Coty and very inexpensive, around $25. The new version is nearly identical to the original formula, but the best way to describe the reformulation is like listening to a recording of a high quality recording. (You know exactly what it is, but it's missing some of the originals quality and depth). Escape's sillage and longevity are amazing. I still get 8hrs of scent just like I did with the original formula from the 90s. Also, if you love Issey Miyake Leau D'Issey, then you will also love Escape. The 2 are nearly identical to my nose. Since spring of 2022, I actually now layer my Escape and Issey together. And oh boy have I received so many compliments or asked what I'm wearing so they can purchase. To describe Escape's scent...it is the ultimate aquatic fruity floral that hits you instantly with a fresh sweet equally fruity and floral watery combination. It is a very mood lifting pleasant feminine scent. Makes me feel happy and elegant. A bit hard to describe. Cant really say one note stands out more than the other, but rather they all blend perfectly to create a mesmerizing unique fragrance delight. You definately can detect that the fruits in it are peach and melon, and they pair and compliment the lovely florals in it perfectly. I can see where this fragrance is either a "you love it" or "you hate it". Either it wows you or hits you as too cloying/sweet or heady. Depends how sensitive some people's noses are? Definately not a light or skin scent. I dont like a weaker fragrance that certain notes stand out or change to something else not as pleasant after the initial opening and dry down. Escape does not do that; every phase from initial blast to the dry down stays constant and pleasant. I always get compliments or asked what I'm wearing more often than any other fragrance when I wear this, or when I wear my also beloved Issey Miyake Leau D' Issey. I get the most compliments when I layer my Escape with my Issey. If anyone has the vintage juice from the 90s oh boy would I love to purchase. Why they discontinue such popular lovely fragrances (or just have them eventually become more cheaply made) I will never understand. I noticed that several people also compare Escape with Elizabeth Arden's Sunflowers as well, that the 2 are very similar. I also wore Sunflowers in the 90s during the summer. But to me, I find that while yes there are some similarities with the peach, melon, and a few of the same aquatic and floral accords, but there is a main difference that sets the 2 apart. Escape does not have any of the citrus notes that Sunflowers has prominent in its top notes, and Sunflowers has a more woodyness to it in the dry down where as Escape has more of a light sandlewood in its dry down. But both have Oakmoss in the drydown too. Also Sunflowers is more in the warmer scent catagory vs the cooler aquatic catagory that Escape and Issey are in.
But as for a very feminine, aquatic, pure, fresh, fruity floral, with great longevity and sillage...I've yet to find a better one that is as uplifting, enticing, and long lasting as CKs Escape or Issey Miyakes Leau D'Issey. Do try layering them both together for a heavenly happy scent that stays with you all day and will have others notice and compliment how wonderful you smell as well!

I'm 38, smelled this on a Swedish woman @ a Bingo Hall, yes, a grandma.
It reminded me of Innisfree Eau de Parfum from Ireland.
On her, it smelled divine, on myself, I can pick up similarities of EA's 'Sunflower'. (I own all the Sunflower flankers).
Now that Innisfree is sold out until who knows when, @ leas I know I can reach for this one.
The projection is beautiful especially with the wind.
Price wise, friendlier on the pocket than Innis & a larger bottle for $30 from Marshalls couldn't go wrong. 👍
Beautiful floral aquatic scent.

Not necessarily something I would wear on myself, but I own a bottle to just smell it from time to time. It was my mom’s perfume back in the day and it takes me back to my childhood when I would steal sniffs of it from her bathroom counter. Definitely got a scent association with this one, so I am most definitely biased, but it’s one of the most memorable to me. I love it.

To multiple people's point below.... the first releases in the 90's and early 2000's were night and day quality compared to today. Even the oldies have been adulterated. I don't know if it is cost cutting measures, cheaper ingredients, inaccessibility to ingredients that are now banned but if I can get 3-4 hours that's pretty good. Even the earlier releases at VS were beasts and stayed on you all day. Rapture, Body by Victoria, Endless Love EDT. An EDT from the nineties could way outperform an EDP from this era. Think Chloe Narcisse.

Marjolein_deud

At first sniff I thought this is a pleasant surprise! I smell citrus and camomile! But a few hours later it's still that. Freshy camomile...maybe not the right body chemistry, I soooo hoped for it to settle with its promising base notes....but they are nowhere to be found, not even the middle notes came along. Bummer. Maybe it will go along better with another scent on top.

corgi02

So dated, OMG 25 years old! NOT. Try to expand your mind a little. This was a youthful fragrance, not a grandma fragrance in 1995. It was cutting edge. In the blink of an eye, you will see, twenty five years passed. Now those tweens and twenty somethings are grandmas and still sometimes wearing this, and it's now a grandma fragrance! Haha perspective. I still enjoy these aquatics even though I moved on for a while. Now I'm enjoying them again. as a grandma. horrors! Not! Age has some advantages do not fear it so much. That's my 2 cents. I actually prefer Ralph Lauren Polo Sport for Women for my mental dip in the ocean while I'm knocking about. But this will do in a pinch. It's easier to find.

JamieSmells

I love this perfume! It reminds me lots of Sunflowers by Elizabeth Arden but way better. Its very beautiful, warm, yet fresh at the same time. Its perfect for the summer and spring but even on fall day it works well. Its pretty long lasting and lasts forever on clothes. Its also pretty affordable as you can get this in many low budget clothing stores, its worth checking out!

NellieD

This was my go-to sophisticated-mood scent in high school, so it cracks me up to see how many people are referring to it as a "grandma scent". I wasn't impressed by the modern formulation I first tried, but I got a vintage bottle on eBay and it is a far, far better fragrance. So much more depth and complexity! I had the same problem with Davidoff's Cool Water (which was my go-to everyday scent for years). I wish Fragrantica offered a way to differentiate reviews of vintage formulas to modern ones, because they really aren't the same perfumes. Anyway, if you're almost into the modern formulation, get your hands on a vintage bottle! It's like the difference between a cheap knock-off and the real thing.

Roses amour

The initial opening of Escape is significantly melon, and it does share this similarity with l’eau d’issey. From here, as the dominant melon unites with the other notes, it mellows, and the result is a beautiful, moderately sweet honeyed rose tea.

D&gredcap

This doesn’t smell like Sunflower at all !!! Perhaps when Sunflower was vintage which I have not tried but the current sunflower is pretty much on Marigold flower whereas this Escape is much more in a very flying sweet melon I totally adore. Please note that it’s not a safe blind buy and formulas are from USA France and now Spain which is pretty pathetic. It’s a very abundant and room filling - if you don’t like intoxicating smells avoid it as this has got a silage and a performance that’ll follow you for long hours

Lynisha25

This is a very dated scent. Smells like the heart of the early 90s. However, it is a weird powdery dry down thag I Dislike. However, I did not pay much for it and it is on of CK fragrances that last longer. Overall, not for.

moonsunstars

Very comforting fragrance to wear at home. It really does evoke the feeling of being on the beach. With the smell of the ocean strongly in the air - Fall is around the corner, and you're comfortable wrapping yourself up in a cardigan as you walk barefoot in the sand. I don't know, random imagery I guess :P

I definitely get the melon and chamomile - I'm reminded of tea. I notice the similarities to Sunflowers (at first spritz, in particular), however Escape is not heavy on the Rose, and it's more aromatic...Now that I own this, I enjoy Escape more. It's like sunshine in a bottle :)

corgi02

If it's just too much of "itself" but you like it, try Something Blue Oscar De La Renta, Ralph Lauren Polo for Women, or Lily Chic by Escada. Lighter versions. They still have that oceanic lily of the valley dry down. with tweaks.

Ms. Jules

Sitting on a sun bleached cedar dock by the ocean while eating cantaloupe literally describes this fragrance. Oceanic musk, definitely cantaloupe, slight golden floral. It's quite unique in its combination. Fresh and fruity. A summers day.

drugstore classics

Charming 90's style scent - dated but delightful. I find it grounded and interesting and well done. Unfortunately it is rich in 'calone', an aroma chemical used to simulate melon and lily and aquatic notes etc. Because Calone hates my skin, many 90's scent are unspeakably bad for me, making scent like Sunflowers even more unwearable, if possible. This personal mishap made me seek out and study scent and join Fragrantica... so who can complain? It turned out to be a happy mishap!

To sum up: If Calone is not an issue for you and you enjoy sophisticated 90's fragrances, DO sample Escape! :D

kaittt

I really wanted to like this one, but to me it smells like the perfume counters at a department store like The Bay. Its very mature and vintage, With such a strong presence its almost overwhelming. This is definitely something I swear my grandma used to wear, and can pretty much only picture it on older woman. It gives me synthetic floral hand soaps and headache vibes. Just not for me.

gillbert

ONE WORD = AMAZING

Mona708

I got a mini bottle of this in a recent trade and I like it. It’s somewhat similar to Elizabeth Arden’s Sunflowers, but with the chamomile, cloves, marigolds, coriander, and tagetes toning down the fruit and floral notes’ sweetness. It makes me think of chamomile tea mixed with the syrup from fruit cocktail. The longevity isn’t too bad (~6 hours on moisturized skin) and the sillage is somewhat modest too, making it a great casual scent for warmer days. One thing I will warn wearers is to be careful when experimenting with layering: don’t layer this over sweet lotions or perfumes- it’ll smell like vomit 🤢 Otherwise, it’s worth a try if you want a simple laidback scent.

$kank$mell$

This fragrance smells exactly what it looks like - honey and tea. This fragrance has a whole-lotta notes, but I smell a honeyish tea note that is ever so slightly spicy and metallic. Unisex all the way...and it does remind me of the 90s.

catswearingperfume

As a teen in the 90s, I wanted this perfume more than anything. I ripped the scent strips out of every magazine I could get my hands on and buried my face in them. I sprayed myself with every Escape tester I passed at the mall. I asked for it for Christmases and birthdays never got it. Eventually I gave up and accepted the fact I wasn't going to own this perfume. And by the time I was older and had the money to buy it, I was distracted by other fragrances and completely forgot about this one.

Cut to nearly 30 years later, I suddenly remembered Escape existed and realized that I could just...buy it? So, I did.

Listen, I know there's a lot of talk about the reformulation of this fragrance in these reviews, and I don't doubt that the version I just sprayed all over myself is not the same as the one I would have had if ONLY my teen Christmas and birthday wishes had been honored. However! This current version does match up with the scent memories I have of this perfume; it was familiar from the moment I sprayed it and it's still familiar as it develops on my skin.

Escape is fresh and aquatic, it's coastal, sea-sprayed florals with some fruit mixed in. But these aren't sugary fruits — this is 90s fruit. Unsweetened and really just here to play a supporting role for the florals. I know the notes list a lot of different fruits, but when I say "fruits" here, I really just mean melon. The florals are the lead though, and they aren't shy florals. But the overall aquatic quality of the composition makes them feel more breezy than they are. There's also another quality of this fragrance that reminds a bit of cold cream throughout the top and heart. That bit was unexpected but I like it.

Escape is not powdery nor aldehydic, two qualities I still mostly shy away from in fragrances. It's fresh, and though I associate this with the 90s, there's nothing "old" about it, and it will not smell out of place in a modern setting.

The projection for Escape is pretty big, at least compared to most of the other fragrances I own. Longevity is outstanding as well. I saw people mention in other reviews that this version is weak compared to the old one - but as someone who never had the old version, the current Escape is plenty strong enough for me. Though I'd be lying if I said I wasn't curious about the vintage formula, and will probably try to chase one down.

I think the reason I fell in love with it as teen, but couldn't articulate back then, is that it is transportive, and it is a mood. It's not melancholic, but it's not particularly sunny either. For me: Escape is an east coast beach under gray drizzly skies, where you aren't sure if the mist you feel on your face is coming from the sky or the sea.

Evenfragrance

Strong bitter floral opening to me, with the same feel as orange blossom - but not that smell. It's very strong and bold for a CK fragrance, not as fresh or light and airy. It's not heavy or powdery and cloying either though, so a winner in my book. Lasts a long time and the development is interesting - not linear. I'll be going back for another sample for sure.

Nickolas Fragrance

This is a great fragrance, I can't really describe it, it's like Prada L'homme for females. I absolutely loved it when I was 19 but it now reminds me of my ex and totally kills the fragrance.

s2jkbrad

A blast of honeydew melon, cantaloupe and sunshine! I hadn’t smelled this in almost 25 years. I remember it being too heavy in my youth, but my younger sister had it and I’m not sure if it’s my age, tastes or a reformulation- where it now smells much lighter but still vintage in that they just don’t makes scents like this now. Slightly aquatic, possibly cloying with jasmine, and a neutral, non interesting drydown. This takes me back to simpler times , it’s cheap now and it fills a niche I don’t otherwise have.

blackoutinthezone

I have the original formula bottle. I dislike it, the first spray and smelling it...it smelt like a bunch of flowers mashed into one. Very pungent. The dry down however smells amazing!!! I wish the perfume initially smelt like the dry down. Why Calvin Klein....Whyyy.

Don't see myself wearing it at all.

VioletOrchid

One reviewer below mentioned that there’s something distinctly marine about this perfume and I second that. I find this scent very unisex especially in the dry down. Now I like unisex perfumes but I don’t like unisex perfumes when they are marketed differently. You’re expecting one thing and get something different. The melon here does not work at all... the whole mish-mash of a million notes flops for me... Not to mention, it can boarder on musty. No thank you...

deakrek

My best friend was 19 at the time, she was (is) the most gorgeous curly brunette with an intoxicating smile and larger than life personality, loved to eat and drink and dance and make love. Some would say she was too young for Escape but I think there's no such thing as to young or too old for a scent and she was the perfect example for that. Escape and her became one. I personally have a different taste in perfume but whenever I smell a whiff of Escape somewhere I can't help but generalize about the wearer being a happy, fun loving, amazing, smart and sincere person :).

JacquelineRenee

I have never been a fan of Calvin Klein's fragrances. Most of them are way too aggressive for me; however, there's something about Escape that I really love. There's something distinctly marine about the composition without any aquatic notes. It's spicy, sweet, cool, green, creamy, and woodsy(in a good way). The melon opening always reminds me of Elizabeth Taylor's Diamonds and Sapphires. It's a warm sort of sunny fragrance without the dryness of let's say Elizabeth Arden's Sunflowers. If you are like me, and CK fragrances tend to be a bit much for you, I think Escape would be a perfect match for you. If I'm having a bad day, I reach for Escape...Spray and smile. Total attitude adjustment in a bottle.

gin42

As a young teen, I was gifted this perfume, along with Eternity and Obsession. I loved Eternity. Would have broke the bottle and dumped it on my head to smell like it from head to toe. Obsession was a dislike, and Escape was a major dislike. It was pungent, sour, and plain headache inducing to me.

Fast forward 30 years later. I decided to revisit fragrances from my past. At the mall I went to the fragrance counter and tried Eternity. Clearly it has been reformulated, and I couldn’t believe how boring it was. It didn’t even smell like the same perfume that I remembered. Even though I wanted to, I couldn’t smell an Escape tester there because they stopped carrying it at department stores a long time ago. No big loss, I didn’t like it anyway, right? I ended up buying Sunflowers by Elizabeth Arden from a discount perfume retailer. I liked it when it first came out, but having not smelled it in over 3 decades, was surprised by how good I thought it was...1993 in a bottle, but damn if it didn’t remind me of Escape a little bit. How could I love one and not the other? I had to smell Escape again!

I found a bottle that was ridiculously cheap online, so I thought, “What the hell, let’s give it a try.” Got it today, and checked the batch code first, like I always do when I buy perfume. It’s a newer batch, about a year and a half old, by Coty. The bottle is beautiful, I must confess, with its classic design and dark liquid color. Let me just say that with that first spray, my eyeballs almost popped out of my head! It. Is. GORGEOUS!!! What in the world?! It definitely smells the same as I remembered it all those years ago, so what changed it for me?! I have no idea! But I’m glad it did!

This is why perfume is so wonderful! Was the change something chemical in the perfume, physical with my body chemistry, or spiritual because I am not the same person I was back then??? Why does it smell like the same fragrance I remember, but to others it smells completely different? Why did I dislike it so, but will now cherish it? Who knows. All I know is that I’m in love💜💜💜

Miss Dolittle

Sun is out decided to we're this. I can't say I love it. Just only just like it. Think that's because I find it intriguing trying to think what smells I do detect .It's so complex. Projects well. Wouldn't buy again.

Rssr

I've got my first Escape, a blind buy, after checking so many reviews and it's love at first smell! I'm extremely happy with my purchase. The formula dates from 2019 and it makes me curious about the initial perfume aroma.
It's very fresh, greenish, flowery although I cannot name a specific one, not sweet at all (thank God). Almost like an expensive soap and i never liked soapy fragrances, but this one's makes me wanna keep smelling my wrist. Ah the love!

Later edit: with time I get the melon aroma, subtle one, not the common artificial sweet flavor. Love it even more!

zsmith

I absolutely love this perfume, is smells like sunshine in a bottle but without the expected lemony summer scent. Might not be for everyone but a perfect bright floral scent!

Lovaloo

I wanted very badly to love this. I was hoping for an intriguing, multifaceted aromatic fruity-floral fragrance. It has quite a complex note breakdown and it's older, from the 90s, so I expected it to smell significantly less sweet than modern fruity florals. My hopes were pretty quickly dashed.

I suspect it's been reformulated. The opening is a blast of the expected fruity, floral, herbal concoction but it's accompanied by a bizarre, chemical metallic smell. After it dries the metallic aspect goes away. While the drydown has vague aromatic, herbal touches, it's primarily a sweet fruity-floral fragrance. Melon and chamomile with some other fruit and floral notes. It isn't distinct or heavy, the melon accord gives it a somewhat thin, vaporous, diaphanous effect.

I don't think it's bad, but it doesn't live up to my expectation. It's a fruity, sweet, floral fragrance with aquatic, herbal nuances. I almost want to say it's too sweet to be described as a summer freshie but I think that comes down to personal preference. I wouldn't wear something this sweet in the heat of the summer.

You never know when these massive brands will reformulate an inexpensive gem. Calvin Klein still has a few winners. I think CK One & Obsession are great for the low price. Unfortunately Eternity has been more or less destroyed by reformulation and I find Escape to be watery and underwhelming.

Katherine122195

Hi I really wanted to know about how does this perform I cant.find a scent that stays and projects would anyone recommend this one?

GinCatsBooks

Escape...I cannot comment on previous formulations, but my bottle was purchased in 2018.

I was curious about thie one, I tend to prefer the more older offerings from CK such as Conrtadiction, Eternity, etc so I thought I'd like this and yes, I do like this one.

I get the comparisons to Arden's Sunflowers, it has the same ozonic/melon notes in it, but it has more spicy undertones to it, I mainly get, melon, chamomile, some apple, cloves and something which smells "dusty" (marigold?), how it opens up is how it stays smelling on my skin, its pretty linear on me but in no way is it boring but its also not super exciting either, its an easy grab and spray scent for me when I'm rushing and I just don't want to think about what to wear.

From reading previous reviews, I'm tempted to try and source a bottle of the vintage juice and see how it compares, but I can't deny that it doesnt last, the longevity is great at 7 hours of wear with a moderate silage.

Oohsmellthisone

Also.. I realize now that I’m into gardening why I love this perfume so much...it’s the marigold note. Marigolds are such a strong smelling flower that you either love them or hate them. I love them and I plant them every year alongside my tomatoes(the marigolds help protect your plants from bugs).

Oohsmellthisone

I used to wear this in the 90’s and I’ve been wanting to revisit my old scents so I bought a bottle of Escape. At first I was like did they change it? Did I change?? 🤣 It took me a day to become reacquainted. I picked up my shirt from the day before and gave it a sniff. All those old memories came flooding back. I think it’s amazing that perfumes , colognes, candles, food... can do that. :)

D&gredcap

Oh Dears if you do not hold a bottle of ‘Calvin Klein Cosmetics’ which is the very first edition made in USA and thereafter or made by Unilever in both USA and France.....well I would say that you are probably judging a completely different scent. I got 5 bottles of the vintage era and trust me ...this is a MONSTER of the 90s .....all bottles made after Unilever (when Coty bought the group) are pretty much crappy and synthetic smells ....and I do not want to go in the Last formulation ‘made in Spain’ also made by Coty which is a Joke!!!

Fragrance555

Best way to describe it, no matter what anyone will tell you :

It's a cheerful floral classic with a heady, flowery opening that quickly transforms into a soapy creaminess, with a very discreet oceanic freshness to it ( not very obvious or sharp ). Just like a luxurious floral soap from 80ies or 90ies, Escape is soapy in a good way, clean and fresh, but not sweet or stuffy, very similar to Noa Cacharel in that matter, timeless in fact.
The opening is quite a statement, very cheerful, unapologetic, spontaneous, spring-like,and straight forward, really fresh & flowery, but not too sweet as I mentioned. Then it turns into a very comforting soapiness, very close to the skin, delicate and feminine. Even though the ingredients seem a lot and messy, surprisingly this is not a complicated scent ! I sense 2 main dimensions ( flowery and creamy ).
It does remind me of : Sunflowers E. Arden, Issey Miyake L'Eau D'Issey, my Burrberry, Flowerhead Byredo, Creed Spring Flower - for the Flowery part, and then Noa Cacharel, and even Clea Yves Rocher for that classic soapy part. I don' t sense too many yellow flowers, in fact, I sense more of the white floral in it such as Lilly of the valley, I don't sense much of the fruity side nor the woody side.
To me it is a feminine classic, cheerful floral, I do not sense the aquatic side to be enough to call this fragrance aquatic. If these marine elements are there, I do not think they are very obvious. Not in the current version of this fragrance. If it comes to the fruity side, to me it's minimal, and definitely not sweet.

After applying, wait around 30 min to 1 hour for the real scent to appear. To me this is a fragrance for the day, and preferably in spring time ! Very optimistic, for a life loving, happy Soul.

juniemoon

I'm wearing Escape today and although I already reviewed it, I can't understand people complaining about it saying it's not as good as the "original" whatever that means. I got mine three years ago and it's quite stunning. Happy with my bottle here.

Seaworthy

I recently purchased my first bottle of this lovely fragrance and it was positively LOVE at first sniff! I love the oceanic salty vibe, warm, floral and watery at the same time. It smells gorgeous on my skin and the fragrance LASTS on me which is unusual as most fragrances do not. A great buy and one that I will use regularly for certain!

RossanaJ

I thought I would give this a try, based on reviews and some of the notes, but hell, the names suits it to a T! Run like hell!

Kersen

Then was beautiful. Now is ugly. Totally different.

Joberkbabes

When Escape was first launched I didn't like it. It was way to strong and sharp smelling for my liking back then. I was wearing Eternity and other soft, sweet florals.

Of course, my scent preferences have changed a lot over the years; so much so, that I now love and sometimes even crave salty, sour, marine-like notes.

I remember the Escape scent distinctly (probably because I didn't like it at the time) and thought that since I can now appreciate this aroma I would get myself a big bottle on-line to enjoy.

Wow, what a disappointment! It is NOTHING like the original. It no longer opens with that sharp, sour, salty note that gave it such unique character and distinction--the characteristic I used to hate and now I love!

I am sorry to say that this juice just smells generic and sweet to my nose...

Oh Escape; you are no longer the trend-setter I remembered you to be!

If anyone knows of a fragrance the smells like the OLD Escape, please let me know!

anduran

Casually classy and warm.

mevans

This smells fresh right out of the bottle. That would be thanks to the melon. But the camomile and marigold are such unique and strong scents, I find they interfere with the notes I do like. The sweet fruit and warm base notes help so I wait for them to come forward and then I like it. I have a mini from a sampler set and I won't buy a full bottle. I wouldn't put it down as a dislike, but I have better options in my collection.

medusa666

Women who say that Escape smells like EA's Sunflowers have their olfactory all 'impaired'...

Escape is NOT a ''super fresh'' scent as some have posted.
It has a melancholic marine air to it with calming chamomile, seductive carnation and sandalwood blended with fresh notes of oakmoss and apple releasing a sunny warmth.

Escape is the mark of the beginning of the 90's era in the American society...and carries unforgettable memories...

TheMood

Got my monthly subscription tester CK Escape written on the side.

Didn’t remember any more why Inpicked it and even whats it about so had no previous bias when sprayed it.

Super fresh rather neutral scent, couldn’t decide if it’s men or women so aId personally say this is unisex, nothing specific comes up its just fresh almost like clean wet linen outside and there is a bit of crisp wind blowing.

It does not leave any impression on me than just fresh for now but have to continue sampling it to see what happens...

perfumeninja

I'm wearing the pure perfume formulation of Escape today and it's everything Fragaria (see below) said it is.

Perfect for warm summer days especially, when smelling fresh is the most challenging. Escape always does this for me. Yes it does have longevity and no it isn't weak so you shouldn't over-apply it. No need.

It's a cheerful perfume with fresh, sun-kissed fruits and flowers. It has some similarity to EA Sunflowers which I also love.

Escape is like sunshine in a bottle. Instant positive attitude for me! It can be had for a song these days too.

Edit: Easter Sunday 2020.
Amidst this global Covid-19 pandemic and isolating at home, Escape proclaimed itself as my SOTD. I love this perfume and it is a cheerful scent to me. It is uplifting and playful when I smell it.
Also, "The Pina Colada" song keeps playing over and over in my head! I don't drink but there you go!
Happy Easter all!

This is what I consider a masterpiece. You don't have to get used to it. You don't have to try numerous times to love it. It's not hard to wear. It lasts until the cows come home. It's as fresh as a morning meadow. There's a wholesomeness to it. It just smells right. How can a person take this many notes and come up with something so delightful...something that isn't dated, terribly mature, and stuffy!?
I realize that not everyone will agree with this...but WHY!? This should last a good hundred years more! I'm so thankful I've been exposed to this before it becomes extinct!

marycelia.vanderbilt

I received my bottle today, but it wasn't my first introduction to this perfume.

I was introduced to this perfume when a rich aunt offered me her bottle to test. She knew of my interest in fragrances, and she had this half full bottle of Escape. I remembered that the sprayer was broken, and most of juice actually cascaded into my palm. I was very trigger happy with that perfume, because of the little amount that came out of the sprayer, and so my entire hand was coated with the juice.

Afterwards, I went to see some friends and they wondered who smelled so good. I offered my hand for them to smell and they realized it was me!

I realized I didn't want to pass up on a cheap affordable perfume which I already had received compliments on, so I set out to buy my own bottle..

It arrived today. The first bursts of fragrance actually reminded me of another CK perfume I already own - CK Beauty. Except that the latter came out way later than Escape. Their dry downs were dissimilar however. While Beauty dried down to a synthetic jasmine scent on me, Escape actually bloomed a few hours after application and I could smell the melon and the flowers.

I wonder how the vintage must have smelled like!

Kersen

Totally different now. Period.

petal411

I don't remember what it smelled like in the 90's. I tried it today and was surprised how much it reminded me of Aramis New West. I always regretted not buying a bottle of New West when it was available. This has that juicy melon vibe. I think I will use this as a casual daytime warm weather scent.

kaide_nj

I agree with amanda-m-lewis this is nothing like it was originally. It was a unique fresh ozonic scent that stood on its own. It had awesome sillage and longevity. I loved EVERYTHING about this scent then they either changed the formula or the ingredients. Now it is, for me, nothing like its former glorious self. This is a total let down and a sad comparison to what the original was.

amanda-m-lewis

Sadly, Escape isn't what it used to be and is a faint replica of what it was back in 1991, the year it was released.

For me, it was a total masterpiece. Ozonic, aquatic and salty, all in one..

It just stood out and held its own, like a vast rock standing in the ocean, amongst the florals of Safari, the heady, plummy tuberorse of Poison and Giorgio.. It was so distinct, so clear and crisp and it was divine.

I never could pick out one particular note but it did invoke a feeling.. And that feeling transported you to a place of calm and aloofness that turned heads as you languidly passed by. At ease with the world.

Now, it misses that edge. And is nkw a shadow of its former self. Synthetic and a faint nod of its former glory day's.

I miss you!

ApathyAngel

This is coming from from someone who doesn't like floral or fruity perfumes.

I got a free sample of this with a purchase. Mildly curious, I tried it without looking at the notes.

I'm glad I didn't look at the notes. If I had, I probably wouldn't have given this a chance.

The first thing I get is aquatics, which I utterly love. Then, I immediately recognized hyacinth, my favorite flower, which has a very distinct, very strong smell.

It smelled like a synthetic hyacinth, but still close enough that I immediately recognized it. And I don't usually have a problem with perfumes smelling synthetic, as long as they're done well.

The other florals came in after that, but I don't know enough about them to pick out individual notes. It just blends together in this gorgeous, aquatic bouquet.

The woody notes at the bottom, combined with amber and musk, really give this scent so much body, depth, and fullness. And every once in awhile, as I'm going through my day, I catch just the tiniest hint of vanilla.

Because I haven't really attuned my nose to florals, they all smell sort of the same to me. White florals are great, I'm obsessed with jasmine, but straight floral perfumes, I just can't get into, and I can't tell the difference between them.

But this is amazing. Definitely leaning toward unisex, but still romantic and lovely.

Obsession is "meh," Eternity is pleasant, but this is amazing. I've already purchased a full bottle.

Go figure, I completely love a floral perfume.

I never, ever thought I'd love a floral perfume.

GagMyFrag

This is the least fave of my collection. For some reason all I can get from this fragrance is very very strong synthetic SANDALWOOD and nothing else. Maybe a few musky spices underneath but that pungent sandalwood annihilates everything, i don't know how theres so many alleged notes i can't smell (rose? apple? melon?? literally where??)

However the silage is decent and longevity is maybe 4-8 hours. But I just can't see a situation where i'd wanna smell like this, too warm for summer and too dank and pungent for winter, perhaps an old lady or something but not for me.

Phantomias

No melon, no aquatic notes - thankfully. There's balsamic notes after the sharp, almost mentholated opening. Very unisex although it's supposed to be a women's scent.
Escape actually isn't bad at all. I've had little luck with CK's Obsession which has too much cinnamon. Euphoria was so far the only CK frag I liked - until now.
Escape is a rich scent, voluptuous and cozy, very nice on a cold day.
There's a reform which seems to be reviled. I'm not sure if my bottle is vintage, it's the pure perfume.

hreljak01

This used to be my signature scent for more than 20 years, but I can't stand it since it has been reformulated. It stinks of something rotten, metallic, rancid. Completely ruined, and has really nothing to do with the original.

LoreleiBluebird

What on God's green earth have they done to you?
Thin rancid melon juice, it has the tiniest whisper of the original formula. I had this when it first came out, and it was remarkable.
This has to be the worst reformulation I have ever tried.
Very bad, very cheap. Very upset Lorelei!

dglightblue

escape
summer test
two sprays to inner elbow

interesting scent
outstanding sillagethe mid notes what ever they are remind me of l'eau d'issey a bit, maybe a bit of cool water - its essence not so much the scent.

i thoughroughly enjoyed it and will raise hell if discontinued.
so, smells like, non sweet flowers, the melon mentioned above must be some woods, aquatic.
i love aquatics. cant name individual notes but lotus springs to mind

big fat thumbs up

dglightblue

CK escape
summer test, on card, cool day

first thoughts:
unusually great, marigolds? floral but deep, creamy ish, watery deep, didnt swoon over the opening, watery but not like any aquatics ive ever smelled.
i would have to do a skin test.

loved the sniffer card thugh.

Liliana4245

One scent that I could never get to like. It just gives me a headache.

juniemoon

Just wearing this now after buying a few months ago. Got myself intrigued after all these positive reviews.

Honestly, it is so well blended I'm having a really hard time identifying the notes individually, but I think I do catch the peachiness most of anything else. The subtle spiciness I'm getting hints of is most likely the combination of oakmoss and vetiver. But definitely not masculine in this composition.

I'm very glad that this is still in production, the quality speaks for itself upon wearing. A bit nostalgic, a bit old school to be sure, but to me those are its' selling points. It radiates beautifully. I was a bit wary seeing the melon listed in the notes so prominently, but I needn't have worried, I'm not noticing that much at all really.

This one is a clear winner in the categories of CK, I hope it is always available.

Helen123456789

Imo the best Calvin Klein perfume.. great smell and good longevity.. very affordable with great performance

Allergiesniffer

This one works well for me, not as overpowering as l’eau d’issey, but a similar tropical happy scent. I felt comfortable wearing it to the office without the silage irritating other people.

S4r4

I tried this one because of the similarities with l'eau d'issey, especially the melon notes... what a disapointment! Not only I do not smell any lemon in there, but it smells very dated, wich I guess I should have anticipated, but since Eau d'Issey is an old one too and it smells so good and classic, I was expecting someting similar with this one! An oldy and not a goody for me!

justfloral

I hate it. The combination of canned melon & pear salad and melting old TV plastic case (with fecal undertones) turns my stomach.

kerrylkatriviera

It's very dated now, even the bottle, but in a good, nostalgic way. It reminds me of "mom" perfumes that you used to spray yourself with when you were a kid and she wasn't around. That's a good thing to keep around, but I wouldn't wear it every day. Wear it when you're feeling nostalgic. There's a place for this in the scent world.

minizelda

I've really TRIED liking this perfume.... I can't bear it and to my greatest deception the longevity is out of this world i still smell it on my bed covers.

Midnight Lady

Quite surprising opening with sweet (not cloyingly), juicy watermelon accompanied by chamomile and hyacinth. Sounds like a strange combination, but for me this worked well together.

After the scent settled, I could notice more of floral notes, especially a bit of carnations and lilly of the valley. But I couldn't detect much of herbal or spicy notes.

All in all, pleasant summer fresh fruity fragrance.

Chrysolaga

I still have nearly a full bottle that I'm pretty sure I purchased in the '90's. It still smells great! It's very floral, and I can see that my taste in perfume has changed over the years, but I can still see wearing this on occasion. I also have Sunflowers, and I agree that there is a similarity there.

meg0825

Oh, how I loved Calvin Klein fragrances during the 90's! I had Obsession, CK One, Escape, and Contradiction.

Years ago, when I first smelled Escape, I remember thinking how incredibly unique it was. And at the time, it was very unique. Floral aquatics were just starting to emerge at that time and Escape was a trailblazer. It does smell similar to Elizabeth Arden Sunflowers, but I think Escape is much more aquatic and herbal. It's a nice summertime fragrance.

thief of hearts

One of the only women's frags that will turn my head!

Deepblack

This is the only perfume that comes close to New West in my opinion.

Gemini12

Right from the first spray it's obvious that this is a perfume that was created pre-2000. There's a deep sweetness that can only come from yellow fruits (melon, peach, apricot) combined with spiciness from the marigold, carnation and assorted spices. The composition is well-blended yet it's obvious that there are many different notes at play here to give it a multi-dimensional complexity. It's rich and warm and heady, but as it dries down there's an almost aquatic note that begins to emerge that gives Escape an interesting twist.

perfumeaddiction

Sweet Jesus it's been years since I smell this one. I got a hold of a vintage bottle to give it a whirl. Back when it came out in 1991 I was freshly married and poor as a church mouse. I don't even think I owned a perfume at that time. I explored this but never owned it. What can I say about it now:

Escape is a bold strong over confident woman! This is explosive in your face loud 1990's. The vintage version will last as long as it takes for you to wash it off and it will even continue to waft through your freshly washed skin. Now wait don't get me wrong this is a classic and a masterpiece. However it is not for everyone.

I find that it remains somewhat linear from start to finish. It's floral.. very floral somewhat green. I get straight up flowers with a mix of apricot. I do not smell melon at all. The cloves are hiding in there along with the apple. There are so many things and notes going on it's very busy.

As I sit here and wonder what Escape's redeeming factor is - I can't figure it out until it has settled. As it becomes more faint it is much more wearable. Even in it's faded and calm state it still drips off you. If you like New West by Aramis quite possibly you will enjoy Escape. It's a distant cousin. There is a reason Calvin still makes this one and it's because of a strong cult following. I suggest trying before purchasing.

Sade800

I'm wearing this again after 20+ years and it's WONDERFUL!!

It's strong, unique and kind of bitter.
I love it.

It reminds me a bit of my all time favourite - the discontinued Fendi :(

I will buy the 100ml bottle once I finish this one.

Beware of all the fakes being sold online.

moonrise

First spray it was so heady and made me sneeze, loud-plastic synthetic.
After a while it settles down on my body, i didn't particularly like it either. meh, just boring flower. faded quickly as well.
Since i didn't really like it i tend to make it as room sprayer. one hot day, i opened my curtains and i catch a whiff of delicious scent. bouquet of fresh flowers, with salt water tone. i was amazed, too bad my body chemistry don't agree with me.

anilinam

@edlih you're braking my heart!

I just received my shipment of Escape, and opened Fragrantica to do my review. I saw your post and now I shudder to open the box!

45 mins later:

@edlih is right. The current version is watered down; the mellon is amplified in a not so flattering manner; my oceanic note is completely missing form the picture virtually once the fragrance comes in contact with my skin; and the fragrance becomes soapy in the drydown. Furthermore, it gave me a headache.

It was a lot of fun revisiting this though, it will be going back.

edlih

@anilinam
I just thought like you about the old escape, I loved it so much, a while ago I bought it again after more than a decade, it is not at all the same fragrance, it became weak watered down. I still have a little amount in an old bottle, and I have done the test, the old bottle is still as beautiful in smell like it was...the new even not recognizable

anilinam

I have the same sensation as Monkeypaw about this scent. I remember following a woman at the mall to ask her what she was wearing. It was a lovely clean scent with hints of floriental, plus what was in the 90s a revolutionary watery oceanic note. I wanted to drown in it.

I made this my signature scent and loved it. I stopped wearing it because it became ubiquitous. But, I've been thinking that I should bring it back to my collection now that it's not so popular. It has been reformulated, and I have not smelled the new version. But I think it's so inexpensive, that it's worth the blind buy.

I'll offer an update when I get it.

Monkeypaw

This was my signature scent in the 90s and I adored it. It seemed like I was constantly being asked what I was wearing (which is always nice) but when my friends used it, it never worked on them (which is odd!). There seems to be a make-it-or-break-it component to this fragrance so if it works with your chemistry, it's amazing. If it doesn't it, it can be awful. I would be cautious to recommend buying this one sight unsmelled.

I recently revisited this one and it still works for me. It's clean, crisp, fresh, almost gender-neutral tone. I'm glad I found it again!

ronin.jose

Indeed it smells very similar to Issey Miyake L'eau d'issey eau de toilette

It's clean, likable, it's floral in the opening (perhaps it's the lily) and the melon note is there but it's mixed with with the other floral notes in here so it's not completely a fruity sweet melon fragance... Quite hard to describe but it simply smells similar to l'eau d'issey edt...

Ann Dromeda

When I haven't discovered the world of perfumes yet, I always use melon or watermelon body mist. And I have discovered perfumes through fragrantica, and first thing I did was to search abut melon notes perfume and I saw this. After reading reviews, I went to a mall here in the Philippines and bought a 10 ml of this and OMG!!!!!!! I LOVE THIS SO MUCH! I feel so fresh all day wearing this. In fact, during our flag ceremony (it was blazing hot and I was dripping with sweat), my co-worker leaned on me and sniffed me and can't stop smelling me during the entire ceremony!!! She said I smell so good!

paganpurge

For me, nothing screams the ninety's quite like Escape and I LOVE it! It is like Sunflowers hip, college radio listening cousin. The one who wears crushed velvet babydolls with Doc Martens.
It is light and so much fun!
I really suck at describing notes so this review may not be of much use to some but I do love the place in my past this perfume takes me.

Chebly

This reminds me of sea, sand, sun, a hot summers day, a cool summers evening, music festivals , very hippy dippy. If you love flowery or oriental smells then this isn't going to be for you. If you like something different then you must give it a try. It's very different and I haven't ever smelt another perfume like it.

kates babyblue

Escape never from you my lovely perfume you are my favourite and make me feel beautiful and makes my senses spin OK I like this OK Its wonderful and does not break the bank..BUY IT AND YOU WILL NEVER ESCAPE FROM THIS ETERNAL SMELL.Kate x

schil

Clever,very clever made.
For me ik smell2 streams. One on e distance, who is fresh very aquatic. And one very close with my nose on it :That's a bit warm Apricot& Amber. those streams are opposit. I is nice for the winter too. I am not so much fan of these. Maybe it is good for varity.

bjer-don

Well, Escape is the hot quarterback on the varsity football team, who dates the prom queen cheerleader. I am the nerdy band geek who will never get noticed.

That is how I see this perfume. I love it. I drool over it. I want it to love me back soooo badly. But it will not.

One spray, and it stays with me all day. It never fades. It actually gives me a raging headache, because I cannot get out of it's presence. I have tried spraying my clothes, tried spraying a tissue and tossing it in my pocket. I even attempted to only spray this on my legs. Nope, somehow, the scent makes it way up my nostrils and glues itself there. If it would just mellow out, we could be friends, maybe even casually date. But no, it rejects me every time.

Corinne39

I had a small bottle of this when it was launched back in the 90s..and although I loved it from the bottle and on others, on me headache-territory lay just a few minutes away! I recently got the new formulation in a swap with the lovely Sheza and I'm totally hooked! I know a lot of people are not impressed with the reformulation, but to me, not only is it fresh, clean and beachy but there's something "warm" and "sunny" about it now..i'm even enjoying it in the cold weather..

Desertedbeach

This was my signature scent between for several years in the early nineties. I adored it and I always felt it was a more grown up, big beast version of L'eau D'Issy - which I also wore and loved but the longevity was abysmal. Not so with this perfume. What a sillage monster! I had a very sexy lover at work during this time and he said he knew when I was in the building as I'd leave trails of my perfume all over the place. I must have ladled it on!

I always felt that this was a big ozonic perfume - it smelled of wide skies and blowy beaches to me. I picture this scent as a grand coastal panorama, all blues, greys and yellows with a strong sea breeze wafting the smell of the sea, the sand and the flowers in my direction.

I haven't worn it since then and my taste in perfumes has changed . But I have a sneaky sniff every now and then and I it is so evocative, such a scent of a time that it makes me smile and whisks the years away. I don't think I could wear it again. It is a perfume of my past. A lovely reminder of my youth.

nitschevo

I emptied so many bottles of this during school and my teenage years. It was one of my more grown-up scents, I suppose. Other favorites during that time were Aqua di Gio, J'adore and L'Eau d'Issey.
Escape is the first of the so called trio (Sunflowers & L'Eau d'Issey being the other two). They do share similarities but are still quite different. To me Escape is a wonderful combination of warm & cold, lush & restrained. Not everyone is fond of the Calone note but after the first blast everything settles nicely and I am left with an aquatic rose, LOTV, woods and some fruit. I consider this to be one of the best offerings of CK. I also think that Escape smells best from afar, not when I press my nose against my skin. Maybe not the best scent for cuddling but whatever. I need another bottle!

amanda-m-lewis

I literally coveted this stuff when it came out in the 90s.. It was breathtaking, liking nothing i'd experienced before. The projection and sillage were awesome and you recognised it straightaway. It has always been an aquatic to me and I now have my very own bottle and wear it in the summer.

**Update. I am wearing it in the winter too and it's just great on dreary days.

LaurenBacall

My first impression after not having touched this stuff in probably twenty years--trying to do too much. Comes across as wishy-washy in the end, and reminds me vaguely of cashmere left forgotten in a closet.

slavka.filipova

I blindly buy this after friend told me about it, i smelled it from the bottle and made order and i really like/dislike this one. It's not bad but not my taste too. So maybe i'll give this to my mom if she likes it. It is long lasting for it's price but just nothing happens when i smell it. Maybe everyday scent i don't know yet.

for me this is 5/10

SolangeN

Deakrec, it's a chemical called calone. It's often used in scents described as 'marine.'

canadianpetite

When this first came out, I loved its strong, insistent, fruity-chamomile mix. Now, it definitely is dated when compared to current vanilla-scented fumes. Time to move on.

One spray on me
Sillage: a foot with trail
Longevity: about 2-3 hours
Rating: 3/5 then and 1/5 now

ritamirai

I have half a big bottle of this. Happy to trade within the US

deakrek

Can anyone pls tell me what is that steel like sharp note which is present in Escape and also in Sunflowers and in a lot of other perfumes? (So I can exclude it when I'm searching for a scent for myself)
Thank you!

Smellicious0000

Escape used to be a favourite perfume, but now not so much. The last bottle I bought turned me off. It was reduced price so now I'm thinking it may have been at the end of its shelf life. Nice to see there are still so many positive reviews. I might try it once more.

LavenderSky

I remember when CK Escape was released in 1991. I remember visiting the CK counter at Macy's to try it out. First sniff, I fell instantly in love with Escape's ocean breezy meets tropical garden scent. I couldn't believe a note profile with such wide range could create such a beautiful balance of fresh and airy while warm and sensual at the same time. Had to have it. I purchased the large bottle from Macy's on the spot. On my skin, the scent is neither bashful or bold. It's very well balanced. It has an air of pleasure and indulgence that is uniquely sexy. The scent wore me perfectly on summer days into sultry summer nights. Escape rewarded me many compliments when I wore it. While shopping today, I wandered into a mall typical perfume shop. As I browsed for nothing in particular, I spotted a bottle of CK Escape behind the counter. I asked the salesperson to see the tester. She sprayed the scent onto a card and gave it to me. I smelled the scent and the memory of why I loved Escape in the first place, flooded back to me. The scent was just as divine as the day I discovered it. And honestly, right now I can't even remember why I stopped wearing it in the first place? Doesn't manner now anyways. As soon as I went home, I jumped online and grabbed a brand new 3.4 oz bottle for under $25 bucks (S&H included) from Ebay. So excited! Just in time for summer. I can't wait to ROCK one of my old school scents favs again ;)

kates babyblue

THIS SMELL LOVELY TO ME FRESH AND LONG LASTING.IT ARRIVED VIA POSTAND I WAS GOING SHOPPING WITH MY BEST FRIEND.
SHE KEPT SAYING I WAS WONDERING WHAT THEY LOVELY SMELL WAS ALL DAY AND REALISED IT WAS ME.
.I LOVE THIS MAKE UP YOUR MIND.

learnincurve

I *miss* the days of the big scent bombs. It's loud it's brassy, it's complicated, at times it's a jumbled mess and it's not ever going to apologise for being any of these things.

I could rant for quite some time about lazy modern designers dumping heavy vanilla in everything because it's easy and very cheap to produce.

hagertygal

I have always considered this scent my unobtainable love. I want to wear it, love it's smell. Unfortunately, one spray is overkill for me. I get a headache and I can still smell it on myself without trying 8 hours later.

ShinningLightOfThunder

It took me a while to like this perfume. The smell was too mature for me at first. I had this bottle for about 4 years I think, and for most of that time it was just collecting dust. I guess I needed to do some growing up in a perfume world sense to appreciate this perfume. But once I decided that I like this perfume, I started to use it everyday :) It's a really nice honey-like scent! At least, that's what I got on my skin - honey note.

Sailor Pluto

Grown up perfume with floral-herbal notes along and a touch of melon. Very sophisticated! May be a bit risky as a blind buy considering the old-school floral notes that may not appeal to all. I like wearing it for a fancy dinner!

Krasnylips

I have tested the vintage version and after the cacophonic start I got a clear note of geranium. Agressive and bold like all Calvin Klein.

Amararata

This is the first perfume I'd ever worn. My first grown up fragrance away from the cloying fruity, soapy and candy-like fragrances of childhood. It's the first fragrance of my high school and early university years.

There is a soft innocence about this scent of a strong female persona, which is highlighted by sandalwood. It is warm and silky and reminiscent of the kind of muse that is the first scent of autumn that melts right into your skin.

I've always had a love affair with this fragrance, the ingenue. However, now I thirst for more complexity and depth, something darker, shocking or well-travelled.

This is the scent made for countrygirls on the hillside, picking flowers. And there is a beauty about its implicit simplicity.

Jmalone84

I have to be honest. I do find this cloying. It gives me a headache, as does L'eau d'Issey. But I totally get this fragrance.

This is completely transformed in the summer I must admit. It comes off very sweet and fresh in the summer, it smells like sweet dewy melon with a bunch of other fresh floral herbal notes. I imagine this might smell quite divine to some. I think I will wear this this summer, just away from my nose so it doesn't make me ill. Reminds me of the ocean, marine air and fruity cocktails. Very fresh.

aaron96west

Key Season: Summer

Key Notes: Melon, powdery Floral

Description; Hot summers day, too hot in fact. It recalls those almost ominously hot days, heavy, suffocating, humid. I’m sure this fragrance would be a fantastic “cheapy” for a holiday, but in the humid summer of the UK, most will find this fragrance simply basic and too much.

Development: (Linear): Very simple, nonexistent development, Melon and hot powdery floral, and that's it.

Longevity: (Average); It does not last any particularly long time but you get your money’s worth with this powerful scent.

Sillage: (A Lot); This hits the skin with its one note scent and explodes, it just reaches from you with fragrant tentacles, ensnaring anyone easily 6ft from you in a napalm of hot summer melon, and powdery florals.

Value £20 for 100ml EDP

A cousin who I shared mY room with
was ga-ga for Escape. But to me the
bottle counts. And there is no bottle
I'd hate to display on mY dresser or
vanity more than I'd hate to a Calvin
Klein bottle. Then there's the smell.
Who would've known that one scent
would single-handedly turn me OFF
of aQuatic perfumes for the rest of
mY life? I didn't! But it did. Peace

diego.lesgart

Iconic fragance! 80 s 90s CK creations were mastercopy, inventive, singular and newfangled fragances ... Escape for him and for her smell quanty and powefull ... glorious creation ...

hippiechick13

As a huge Sunflowers fan when I was much, much younger, this strikes me as her grown up sister, or a sister scent that is a little more fresh and concise, as Sunflowers can cloy. I love it, don't get me wrong. But Escape I feel more comfortable wearing now.

I'm confused because I tried it about a year or so ago and just... yuck. It reminded me of Fancy Nights and cat pee... it was high pitched and nauseating and actually made me feel kind of sick. There was an undertone to it I didn't find but the top notes were so offensive it was a scrubber. I am assuming the bottle I tried was off?

I tried it a few nights ago on a whim at Chemist Warehouse and it was awesome. It was sweet, fresh, reminded me of my beloved Sunflowers and had this something to it that I just really liked. I got it the next night as it had scented my cardigan from the night before and still smelled so good. A great release from CK and next to Eternity Moment, probably their best.

The_Entity

This, like contradiction is great for a hot day if you want to cool down, can smell the melon in this

Frida77

To me, this is a nautical, not too feminine, quite strong scent. I wore it in my late teenages and I liked it then. It has a great longevity and it´s non offensive. Smells mature but also fits a teenager.

Rain Cloud

Used to be my signature perfume in high school, university time. It's strong, sunny and sexy. Very unforgettable scent and I get alot of compliments.

andalucia lover

I love the idea of this fragrance but it does not work with my body chemistry. I smell like copper pennies.

Tiviia21

I absolutely love this fragrance. Whenever I wear it I get compliments. The peach, melon, plum, rose and sandalwood are very pronounced on my skin. I knew it was a signature candidate before I even sprayed it on. Also, the price makes it a great candidate for a signature scent; I picked up a 3.4 fl oz bottle for $28 from Perfumania.com.
The name is also perfect because it puts me in a whole other world. Whenever i'm wearing it I think of cool nights in Hawaii. It can be worn either day or night; it is fruity/floral enough for day but warm enough for nights.
BEWARE: It is a silage monster. 2-3 sprays anymore than that would be pushing it.

jrhmakeupartistry

I truly have always had issues with Calvin Klein fragrances. They are far too aggressive for my taste: Euphoria, Obsession, Eternity...etc. etc. Too many notes fighting with each other, and I simply cannot wrap my head and my nose around Klein fragrances.

I am a no nonsense straight forward type of lady, and while I can appreciate a bold intense fragrance, I think if I wore those types of fragrances, I don't think I could even stand to be around myself; maybe that's one reason why I prefer cooler, calmer aquatic floral types of compositions. Escape has been around a long long time, and this is the only Klein fragrance that I truly like and wear. There's a little bit of everything in this fragrance that can appeal to a wider audience based on general preferences. With Escape, you get warm yet cool, crisp and juicy, salty but sweet. Even though this too is a complex blend of notes, it just works for me.

Jmalone84

Smells almost exactly like L'eau D'Issey. If anyone in New Zealand wants a free bottle let me know, I never use it.

AnnaT

Calvin Klein's frangrance is always difficult, except Eternity Moment i think. Eternity Moment is very florally, making it much easier to wear and suitable to all occasions, weather and season. I remember i were in horror when testing Eternity and Obssession about 10 years ago. I thought the bottles were off. i have learnt to love Eternity and use it since then.

Escape is a blind buy. i am in the hunt for 'older' perfume lately. I simply have too much perfum of 2010s that i need a break, and some surprise. And Escape is not expensive at all.

When i received the bottle and sprayed two cautious little sprays 1 on my wrist and 1 on the back of my neck, i thought the bottle was off (typical Calvin Klein there). But i had experience with Calvin Klein and so i waited. The first, say 30 minutes was really not nice. i constantly sniffed my wrist hoping the bad smell would go away. It did. The bad smell evolved into a very unpleasant plastic artifical smell. What kept me on my seat instead of in front of a washing sink was the lovely whiff of melon i got from my hair and the back of my neck whenever i moved around.

I went out to subject myself to high temperature for a while. I am very pleased to find that the unpleasant plastic artifical smell from the wrist had gone. The wrist smelled of lovely melon. The melon has been with me for several hours now. Who would hae thought melon (as top note) can last so long?

Although i only smell melon, i have no complaint and am only too glad to have find a way to enjoy another Calvin Klein.

enigmaticessence

This is a loud white and yellow floral, slightly aquatic in feel. I notices a higher pitched similarity to Borghese's Il Bochio, but this might be even more fresh on your morning jog. No joke! It opens with a sharp, sour melon which dissipates and then comes back intermittently.

I love Il Bocbio - full, loud and womanly, with more green - but both of these can be quite overpowering in the same way as Giorgio Beverly Hills. Be Prepared! Out of the three I actually find this one the hardest to wear, but my skin does not usually like aquatics. Il Bochio is the more wearable and understandable of the three, but all stand on there own and are quite different from each other. You Must try them to get the whole, amazing picture.

Very good sillage and longevity. Best in hot weather.

ShoppinQueen

I love the clear scent of Escape. And I cannot find any similarity to Sunflowers and to L'Eau D'Issey, which I don't like.

fragrantperfumes

I bought this perfume years ago and had a phase wearing it. STRONG PERFUME. Probably the perfume I have the most trouble describing---on me anyways, it has such a kind of smoky smell that lingers forever---it has some sweetness, but the smoky effect is so strong it takes over everything and I can't distinguish anything beyond that. In my opinion, it's more for someone that is in a "daring" or "extraverted" mood.

unlitcigar

If you read the main accords, you will understand this one is a hotchpotch. Total mess. It smells like a lot of wilting marigolds dumped to rot on the beach. On others it smells floral and inviting. But on me I don't get any other notes, it just smells like marigold tea, not floral but more like salty sweat, that's the smell. People compliment and ask me which scent is it. But I will pass this one as it does not satisfy my olfactory senses.

Swamp Lily

I used to wear another version of this fragrance. I don't know if I was wearing the male version or whether the female version has been reformulated to a point where it is noticeably different. Overall this is more complex and floral, the other Escape was more fruity, fresh and oceanic and was my preferred Escape. Nevertheless I still love this fragrance, it's a summery garden of fruit trees and wild flowers overlooking the sea. The chemical smell of Sunflowers by Elizabeth Arden has got nothing on Escape. I just took a look at the stupid commercial. If I was influenced by perfume commercials I'd buy nothing!

Edit/Update: I tried the male Escape today and it is very masculine, so I am almost certain that the original fragrance I had has been reformulated, (as it seems, from reading reviews on here, are many fragrances). It's a pity because the original was more fresh and summery and the current fragrance could have been marketed as something new.

Jmalone84

They really don't make fragrances like they used to. (Says the child born in '93).

MA-MA-MA-MA-MA-MA-MELON BOMB

MELON BOMB

MELON BOMB!!

I smell like a big, sweet, slightly aquatic melon bomb and it's glorious. Once it dries down the fresh/spicey/herbal component is for you only, and what radiates from you in waves is the sweet, beautifully balanced melon component.

It gives me a slight headache but no way am I going to stop wearing it. It smells so sweet, and yet I detect a slightly masculine feel to it. I can understand other young'uns like myself not being able to appreciate it because it is quite different to others on the market today, but it's recent enough that it's very wearable for young things like myself. Surprised no one else has said this, but it does remind me a lot of acqua di gioia by armani which I used to have but didn't enjoy. I'm not really a fan of aquatics but I am highly impressed by this. Plus I like knowing that pretty much no one else is wearing it. Boom.

Oh and be really careful with that trigger finger, one or two little sprays is more than enough, sillage monster that it is. I put a little spritz on either side of the back of my neck and on one wrist so it wouldn't be wafting up my nose all day.

czerwinski1

Super longevity and sillage! Very interesing fragrance. This one is fresh, but strong, clean and creamy, aquatic, fruity and floral. For my nose is a masterpiece.

LaviniaMidnight

I bought Escape in 1992, sophomore year in college. It reminded me of the beach, salty air.. with a margarita or pina colada in my hand. It also was a time that we were shedding the decadence of the 80's and stripping down to essentials. I remember flannel shirts, my hair in a ponytail, and Nirvana when I smell Escape. I love the drydown, kind of a peachy sandalwood.

Peta22

@claudiu.alexx, you said you're relatively new to perfumes so you may not be aware that perfumes can smell completely different on people with different skin chemistry to yours... The other thing to consider is that other people like different scents! For instance, I am not a fan of heavy floral scents but as a fragrance group, florals are probably the most popular. I also love fresh 'green tea' scents but one of the most popular green tea scents smells like bug spray on my skin whereas 1000's of other people adore it! The point is that while you are most definitely entitled to your opinion, it's pretty rude to categorise people who wear this as not caring about themselves just because YOU don't like it!
Anyway, I've just received Escape as a gift and although, after a quick sniff of the fragrance from the bottle, the top notes aren't really to my liking (smells a bit heady and floral to me) the notes listed sound promising. I'll be sure to give it a proper review once I've had a chance to wear it.

nettoyant

claudiu.alexx, you seem to have a habit of not trying out perfumes before you buy them...then, you leave unhelpful "reviews" railing on about old people and the wonderful and helpful reviewers before you. I would take them over your comments any day.

In response: If you're new, you test, buy samples, buy pure oils of each scent so you know what melon or violets smell like in perfume.

how do you think insulting those who like something you don't is reasonable? No one minds a negative review but nothing is less helpful than a review which excludes a balanced and fair interpretation of a scent. All you do insult reviewers because they like something you don't like.

Perfumes are very personal, that's why there are many different types to chose from. Perfumes are NOT made for people of certain ages nor do certain types only appeal to a certain age group. As an example, if you look at the forums you'll find many older members loving Katy Perry perfumes, which are not marketed to poeple over 25. Many younger members love Chanel 5. So, reviewers dutifully stating their age for your benefit will help you in no way, shape or form.

Try more, learn, then leave a real review.

A bit of a review, it's a sweet, melony and rich classic. It's very warm and not aquatic like many melon scents. Been around for decades, it's not going anywhere much like Eternity and Obsession.

claudiu.alexx

My worse decision in my life. I blind-bought this for my GF for our anniversary and I totally screwed it up. She does not like it, nor do I. It's really weird, totally unattractive and smells cheap. Can not imagine who would ever wear this.

@nettoyant: Yes, I do. Because I am relatively new to parfumes and did my first blind buys and I am shocked how people can not only like, but praise a parfume that smells terrible. At least mention what is your age, when are you using it. Ok, I will be nicer. I recommend this parfume to women who do not really care about themselves, who just pick a parfume, any parfume and put it on her. This is the one to go, you have got to trust me, the best one ever! It is awful. And does it matter how I send my message across? Isn't it the same thing to say it in other words less directly than that? It is my conclusion. I am dissapointed with it as others are really happy with it. Should I pick as well on those who praised it and ask them how can they possibly say that this parfume is good in their opinion? Are you outta your mind?

Fluffyandpuffy

It is very sweet to start then I get the very strong fruit or melon that is alittle much until it calms down and that takes awhile. It does take you back in time alittle. I do like it though. Feels more summery to me but not an "old" smelling frag but you gotta like melon.

Gabbygirl83

There is just something I like about it, on occasion, not an everyday perfume (in my opnion).

Mellyhelly

I had this perfume many years ago and I loved it for about 2-3 months, then I gave it away because it tired my head, as it happens with virtually all CK scents, the few that I really liked.
It's a sweet floral scent with interesting edges, quite classy yet wearable in many occasion. Versatile for both casual and formal events and very longlasting!
It strongly smells of chamomille and gives a gentle aura.
Anyway after a while it becomes tedious on me.

Fhaldara

I love Escape! It's fresh, clean and aquatic and very feminine. The fruity notes balance beautifully with the woody notes, and on me it has amazing longevity and sillage - I've still caught whiffs of it up to 2 days later!

Michylaka

Ahhh the delightful aquatic, melon-fruity and rosey scent of Escape. My granddaughter who is five and I share a bottle as this is her favorite fragrance on my vanity. It takes me back to the early nineties before I was domesticated. I wore it quite a bit back then. It was and still is so very refreshing. Sunflowers is as well which I have too. This wears better on me however.
10/10

stacey_nay

Huh. This reminds me so much of Elizabeth Arden's Sunflowers. This perfume came first so I'm not sure if Sunflowers is a direct rip-off or if this style of fragrance was just very en vogue at the time.

What a busy perfume pyramid! As much as I love the idea of a melon scent, I've started to get the sense they don't necessarily suit me or work well with my particular skin chemistry. On my skin, I get a sweet, ripe melon scent, followed up by some spicy notes and a background marine-type note of the ocean. Like Sunflowers, I get an unsettling fizzy baking soda scent in the background (I wonder if this is how my skin treats melon scents), but here it is very minimal to the point of almost being unnoticeable.

On my skin, sillage is moderate and it is moderately long lasting. I like Escape, but I don't think I'll buy a full bottle (I have a decant spray vial at the moment).

georgequeue

My mother was given a little flacon of this perfume back in 1998.

Escape For Women smells really sweet, but not too sweet to be unpleasantly dizzying; it actually smells delicious! There's an interesting boozy melon, wood, and spice blend in it that, to my untrained nose, gets powdery and floral as it dries down. Sillage and duration are -as far as the vintage juice goes- remarkable, and it was a really sexy and noticeable scent back in the 90s; I'd give it a 9/10.

Nikkafragrance

Best fragrance by Calvin Klein. I am surprised that so many viewers clicked the dislike button.
Update: I wore Escape in the New years's eve and I realized one more time that this scent is just magical! It's not overpowering, but only two sprays on my clothes last for ages. What is really curious here is how after mixing so many completely different notes they get this clean, fresh and fluid scent? To me Escape is trully unique I can recongnise it among 100 others perfumes.

theuntrainednose

Summary: For me, starts nice, but the melon note becomes overpowering after a while and I cannot tolerate it.

Smells nice. A little flowery but not sweet at all. Mainly a fresh flowery scent. The flowery part is very nice, reminds me of wild flowers and wild bushes.

However, there's some note on the fresh side of this fragrance that displeases me. Maybe it is the melon, which does not smell like those sweet, fragrant, melt in your mouth melons, but just as those unpleasant, too-green melons which are a disappointment.

For me, replacing the green melon note with carnation would have been perfect, as I seem to like the other notes together. As it is, I am not sure I can get over the green melon note to enjoy the rest.

Edited to add: The sillage was actually strong enough for the melon note to become overpowering and distracting while programming at work (had applied it on my left arm near the wrist). Had to scrub it twice with hand soap and apply scented lotion to make it disappear. It seems I cannot handle this melon note after all, which is a shame as the rest was very serene and pleasing to me.

SilverZeru

I dont know any other perfume that has the same fragrance as Escape. It's strong woody and yet fresh and sweet at the same time. It lasts long as well. I used to love wearing it in winter spraying a little bit on my sweater, it would make my whole closet smelled lovely. I dont know if i would buy it now though only because i live in a hot and humid country now and the strong fragrance can overpower you in the heat. I also noticed that a lot of imitation perfume here also smell like Escape

Classic 1990s stuff, now on the market for almost a quarter century. They say that CK reformulated it, so I can only comment on what it has to say today. And this is interesting, because it appears like a logical progress from Obsession, like a step forward from the 1980s into the 1990s. Not so offensively voluptuous, more fruity, still 100% feminine. In retrospect this makes perfectly sense, because in the 1990s everything became "light".

Yet, this is miles away from the androgynous fragrances CK later would take on. Rather, it reminds me of girls in the early 1990s who still wore their mini skirts but swapped their stilettos for Dr. Martens boots. Moreover, in contrast to some other 1990s icons, this doesn't appear dated and may still be worn today - even by women who hadn't yet been born by 1991.

One of my favorites scents of all time. I don't get the fruity or floral notes on me and it is never powdery. It is a woody, somewhat spicy, sexy, sensual fragrance that is absolutely divine.
Had I not already had this, I would not have tried it based on the many reviews I have read here, accusing this glorious juice of being powdery and floral (which I do not like).
I always receive compliments from men when I wear this.
I'll never be without it.

Opening-Note

This perfume is one that I love to wear with sweaters/dresses that I don't wash every time I wear them because it makes my closet smell great and it lingers on them for a long time-- usually long enough that I have to use it again the next time I wear that specific article of clothing. Escape has a very fresh, clean sort of fragrance, but it is also surprisingly strong. Great for day-to-day wear.

beccalee79

This fragrance more than any other I own makes me feel so womanly and sexy. It's an amazing fragrance that I've found people either love or hate. I love it and will always have a bottle in my collection. It's a sillage monster so I would be carefull not to overspray etc..

Tine1world

Once a few years back now, the sales assistant at the chemist queried? "What perfume is that you are wearing'? "Well". "It's Escape by Calvin Klein". I answered. "Oh" She replied. "I always wondered what that one smelled like"? "It's nice on you." She said.

That particular chemist does stock some hard to source fragrances. This one is away's on special there for around 25 Aussie dollars for 100 mills EDP.

I recall paying well over 80. Dollars AUS, when this one was launched back in the early 90's and I was just into my third decade here on earth.

I have three bottles of Escape, fear I might run out? One bottle I scored cheaply as a tester, no box or spray nozzle for 5 Aussie dollaroozies. A bargain.

I have said nothing about it's aroma though. It is in my educated opinion . Yep thought I would throw that one in. I am a retired High School Arts teacher.

"A CLASSIC".

Needless to say that I also have 'Sunflowers and copious amounts of L'Eau D'Issey. These fragrances having similar notes and similars smelling aroma's on my skin.

I'm MELON HEAD. Just like that episode on 'Friends' when Joey gets the turkey stuck on his head I envisage myself with my noggin stuck inside a melon. That's right Monica did too!

This fragrance is still being manufactured that I am most truly grateful for. Thank you Mr Klein.

Many reviewers here seem to hate the period in time known as the 90's and sadly belittle the decade for it's worthlessness. Mind you. The 90's are known to have been the most progressive artistic period in time, since we started caring and documenting our history.

'Escape' is a complicated and complex fragrance that is not for anyone it seems, it is or can be long lived and linear. The actual fragrance colour is quite deep and syrupy looking housed inside a round faceted flacon. 'Multifaceted'.I love this fragrance. I take breaks from it but I still love it. My affair with 'Escape' will never end.

I can detect hints of carnation, chamomile, peach and ever so soft musk and cedar. I agree with many here 'Escape' is about carefree sunny day's with a disposition to match.

Cheers T. Ps it can last well into the next day after application.

When will people learn that outright rude reviews are not the way to go? I remember wearing this in the 90's but can't remember exactly what it smelled like. I just remember I loved it! I may have to buy some more!

LadyPilot

If I were to define the nineties in terms of scents, ESCAPE would definitely go in the first place. ETERNITY and EDEN would surely follow, as a juxtaposition to the eighties' icons such as Poison, Anais Anais or Gabiela Sabatini, just to mention a few. I used to hate Escape as a teenager, when half of my teachers and aunts started to smell like melon instead of smelling with good perfumes - that's how I felt about it at that time. The melon was overwhelming and ever-present. Now, looking back after over 20 years, I have all due respect to that melon mania and I'm able to perceive it as the icon of the era. It's unbelievable, but despite being a powder-spicy-vanilla lover I just got myself a bottle of Escape, for the sake of sentiment and experiment. It used to smell much better, more natural and fruitier in the late nineties (no wonder), but after half an hour the original charm emerges and you can appreciate Klein's creation at its fullest.
