This is if Kilian Angel's Share & PDM Herod had a baby. Except it's much more syrupy sweet & the tobacco is deeper & smokier. Very complex & multifaceted scent, it's the best gourmand tobacco scent ever, I wholeheartedly stand by that.

KerriZ

Lots of orange juicy mango at the top. Sweet. Sweet. Sweet. Like a fruit juicy hard candy thats been in its plastic twist wrapper at the bottom of mom's purse for way too long. The sugar has become sticky and chewy. A sweet gourmand lovers wet dream.

junimo

Serving boozy apricot!!! Not the type of scent I like to wear (sweet, overripe fruit) but aaagghhh it’s so YUMMMM. Like eating tropical fruits in a smoky bar. Never smelled anything quite like this.

Tshahb

A busy fragrance reminiscent of Nishane belters (a less aggressive Fan Your Flames perhaps). Not for me but very nice all the same.

sorvaahr

Sixth and final sample of my set. I definitely kept the best for last. Immediately on strip this was a love and on skin, it performs very well for me. I feel this is a more complex (more "niche" I find is a derogatory, pretentious way to put it) version of Le Beau Le Parfum. I definitely get a lot of fruitiness in the opening, a blast of apple, mango and coconut flesh. If I smell it immediately upon spraying, I get a blast of alcoholic coconut rum (Malibu) which is really nice. Later on, it dries down into a woodsier, creamy coconut with a tinge of greenness (artemisia?). The florals I don't really get here (thankfully for me) and the honey I think just supplements the sweetness, I don't pick it up as a note which is good since I hate honey. A very interesting work by experimented perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour.

It performs well and lasts a good 5-6+ hours on me before getting closer to skin and projects well the first 2-3 hours. So yes, I find this is a more complex Le Beau, just as sweet but much different in the drydown. This turns out to be a common theme in Naomi Goodsir's fragrances, they morph a lot from opening to drydown! I'll be enjoying this when fall comes, for sure.

Ilikewhatilike

Thought it would be more fruity up top and whist there is a pleasant mango note up top, it’s not sweet as there is a nice herbal and sourness from the other notes.

Unique and interesting. Well blended, as nothing stands out to me (apart from the mango at the start). I don’t think it’s a fragrance for people who want to show off, but someone who captures others imaginations and demands closer inspection. Just as with the fragrance, there is depth that requires time to reveal all its secrets.

tinsky61

Nice tropical opening. Mango more than anything else. It’s very earthy after that. It reminded me of a walk through wet autumn leaves. Very interesting. The dry down has a lovely warm honey vanilla note. Sprayed a sample on top of my hand at 9AM and it was still there at 7:30PM. It’s well thought out and individual in execution. A yes for me.

BlackAmberMoon

Hell yes. Tropical, boozy, a bit naughty. Sillage is fantastic. One of my top 5.

Or du Serail is my favourite of the Naomi Goodsir family. It feels very true to the brand, and has a cool dapper feel to it. It's also rather unusual when you examine it up close. I've had this since early 2020 and have used it somewhat scarcely once the initial "I just got a bottle, this is so cool!" excitement died down. Owning a bottle is still super exciting, don't get me wrong, I just purchased a few scents afterwards and the excitement transferred to them.

I imagine this being the scent for a cigar bar, with a shot of whisky on the rocks. and I gave that a shot by suggesting it for a date, as a fan of whisky. I don't like cigars, it appears. Was a classy date, though. Beautiful leather chairs.

The note pyramid is super complicated but once you give it several wears, it makes sense. On the surface this is a warm and boozy fragrance with a little bit of woods but once it develops, it becomes a little bit tropical and somewhat herbal (artemisia). The listed mate I initially couldn't detect because I'd never smelt it but I made it my mission to understand this fragrance fully. So, I made my way to a specialty tea store in my city and picked up some mate tea. I didn't care much for the taste (quite bitter), but I'd finally smelt it and the taste also assisted. I could detect it... a little. It's not prominent. The tobacco is also quite dominant, given time to develop.

Performance wise, this is up there with the best. When people talk about 80s fragrances being huge, this is what I imagine. The materials used are obviously magnificent. I don't think there was any corners cut. Performance and quality were obviously of utmost importance to all involved, as was concept.

I think this fragrance is a brilliant olfactory representation of Naomi Goodsir's style. I've been a massive fan of her ever since I saw an interview she did with Lee Lin Chin on SBS in 2003-ish. Her style has definitely developed since. If Iris Cendre was her as a student milliner, making hats out of bizarre repurposed materials ... Or du Serail is what she's become. Bertrand Duchaufour has created a 10/10 masterpiece which isn't surprising, given his catalogue of creations.

In saying this, it is a smidgen expensive so it is worth trying first. I wouldn't call it overpriced, because its lasted me 3 years (and counting) but, as a quality niche perfume, it can be construed as prohibitively priced. This is something that one could call a special treat, or perhaps if someone asks you if you want a perfume as a gift this could be it.

ecojoe69

The notes are spot on but what I would say about this scent is that it is a much lighter version of many of the scents it is compared to. Its really a skin scent which is likely just what some people want so they steer clear of powerhouses like Ore. I see it compared to TF TV and it seems much more mango forward and much less vanilla than that scent. I like it but my wife felt it was powdery on me which is a "no" for me.

ButterBelle

My first sniff from a blotter instant impression was a vision of summer afternoon sitting under an apricot tree, dry sweet straw and weeds warmed by the sun and herbal, apricots decaying and boozy.
After testing on my arm the dry down was a honeycomb/fruity/lactonic combination and addictive. Sweet, warm, with mango coming through, but not cloying. My arm still smelled marvelous the next morning.
I purchased the bottle and spritzed lavishly. A new impression; of a medieval feast. A smoky hall, creamy beeswax candles burning, mead spilling over onto oak table tops, dried herbs, syrupy preserved fruits and yeasty breads. Deep, sexy, yet totally friendly and wearable. Beautifully blended, unique and I love it.

klioux

Immediately, sweet sweet amber. Twisted into a gleaming ribbon of honey brightened by juicy mango. There are some definite earthy and herbal elements here - labdanum, mate, sage, but they are all evenly ground into a fine powder.

In the dry down, the honey settles itself into more wood and spicy tobacco, and I am so surprised it finds suitable balance on my extremely sweet skin. Normally a dominant amber or honey note would outweigh other notes and flatten a fragrance into a disappointing linear sweetness. This stays a multifaceted, balanced, amber-honey delight.

Ninaaaa

All I get is dirty honeycomb, assuming because it's sandwiched inbetween tobacco and amber. Not for me, I enjoy a sweeter type of honey scents like Back to Black by Killian, which does have similar notes like tobacco and amber, but smells more realistically like honey to my nose.

MatchaCat

I get nondescript fruits with a bit of tobacco and incense drydown. Don't really get a lot of honey from this one. Not super strong, but strong and lasts long. Feminine. Nice perfume. 7 out of 10.

For reference I'm female.

Enrium

Having recently tested (and loved) Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille and Dior Tobacolor, both sweet tobacco scents, I was excited to try Or du Sérail. It is a more unusual, challenging scent, not surprising, as it is by a niche brand rather than a subsidiary of Estée Lauder. Boozy, smoky, honeyed fruity amber - there is a lot going on here, but it works really well.

OdS opens with boozy fruity notes, resembling dried fruit rather than fresh. Mango, a slightly unusual note, is dominant. I used to snack on dried mango when studying in the university library, and the opening here brought back that memory. I get some tart redcurrant too. Coconut follows closely, enhancing the tropical element of the mango while adding lactonic smoothness. Sweet tobacco, emerging early, adds a nice smokiness throughout.

There is a herbal quality to OdS as it develops, which, alongside the booziness, reminds me of vermouth. A little ylang ylang, smooth and sweet, is a logical progression from the tropical opening. The smoky tobacco lingers in the background.

Honeyed amber slowly emerges as it begins to dry down, sticky and sweet yet rich and resinous. It is grounded by woody notes and the smokiness that imbues this scent provides a nice counterpoint. Some dry, powdery vanilla ties it all together. It fades to become a sweet amber skin scent with a hint of musk. Sillage is moderate and longevity is long-lasting, as tends to be the case with honey scents.

A beautiful, creative take on a sweet tobacco perfume, OdS is artistic and original, yet surprisingly wearable. Unisex despite its sweetness, it is best worn in autumn/winter. Avant-garde for everyday. 4/5.

I once had brunch in a very, very expensive hotel. It had an actual ladies’ “powder room”. Not the toilet, but a little gender-segregated lounge, with couches and mirrors and ashtrays. That’s this perfume. Wood furniture, expensive perfumed cigarettes, berry-flavored hard candy, scented talcum powder.
I’m startled by those commenting that this is “masculine”. Maybe evoking an older gentleman with a pricey cigar, and a whisky old fashioned with extra cherries. And he uses talcum powder.
I like it, but I don't see myself wearing it out.
Or du Serail is a fun, unique, and evocative experience. Worth a sample for sure.

shmellow

Picturing an elaborately carved cedar alter in a small modestly sun-lit temple hidden in the forest. The offerings on the alter are fruits (cherries and tropical fruits) and nuts in large wooden bowls, and dark booze. Also on the alter and around the temple are burning incense.

dabearjew82

I get warm apple pie, yummy, wish it came in extrait!

Bagoo

Blind buy (loved the notes and wanted to try).
To me it opens with strong honey and settles with light tobbaco mixed with fruits. There's something waxy (almost powdery) to it.
I usually use one spray. Sometimes it fades, sometimes I can smell from arms lenght. Maybe need to try in the middle of the winter...

XeniaKoneva

It is one of those scents that if you've smelled somewhere once you will remember forever. I'd called this "gourmand for those who have a dark past and nothing to lose". Very unusual opening, almost like fermented fruits - sour and grotesque. Spritz it on your skin and give it some time to settle, and you won't be disappointed. I find it quite heavy on sour fruits accord, honey, and booze. Or du Serail does have a little sweetness to it, but it is juxtaposed to dry and tobacco notes. Some people also sense apple pie kind of smell, and I get it sometimes.
If I had to describe it in 5 words I would say: "Smoky rummy mango with honey".

Not a safe blind buy unless you are a fan of Bertrand Duchaufour and you know what to expect from his creations.

Csabesz

Sprayed on my hand on Friday evening, and on Sunday evening I could still smell it. The longevity is on a different level. About the scent: the most beautiful fruity sweet fragrance I ever tried. Leans to the feminine side.

Gatorsrules

After falling back in love with deep scents and gourmands, this is magical!! It’s honeyed, dried fruits with Tobacco. The coconut comes through a bit too! Very sexy I get many compliments :)

annema

Boozy, tobacco and tropical. Warm and sweet. I like it. It's well made, does not smell synthetic. I find it quite unisex, sightly more masculine but a female could easily wear this one. If you like the notes, try it ! This is probably the first tobacco perfume I feel I could wear.

Aveline

I found this one pretty meh considering the high ratings, and for how much the notes made it sound up my alley. I probably describe too many scents as "Tommy Bahama candle" but alas, we have another. Unfortunately a lot of frags in the tropical genre, as much as I enjoy it in theory, end up falling into the Pier 1 Imports category, and spending more doesn't necessarily negate that. Or du Serail mainly gives me honeyed mango, with a slight tobacco dustiness, and bit of of musk supporting it somewhere. The coconut comes through as the glass from a pina colada, after finishing it maybe an hour ago. If I'm getting any rum, it's through a very subtle sweetness reminiscent of "pancake" (not maple) syrup. I wouldn't call it straight up stale, but it leans that way before it does fresh. It is noticeable and reasonably strong for a fruitier scent, not bothersome in any way, it just smells more like a Florida hotel gift shop than anything I care to scent myself with.

corkscrewcurly

Just scored a partial bottle of this.

I am a fan of Bertrand Duchaufour, having not smelled any of his creations which I don't (at the very least) like.

This is a very quick review, as I sprayed this on skin about 7 hours ago, and need to test some more.

It is absolutely stunning. It's borderline gourmand, with an undertow of tobacco and woods. I have over 1200 bottles of perfume and this is unique.

Not a safe blind buy (unless you've similar taste to me).

Fragaddict123

Ok
This is something else
As a designer it’s a very good release
Yes iam conflicted about it and I will tell you why
On your first spray you get some class A notes something magical and syrupy it made me pause for a second trying to comprehend what’s happening the opening is so good you won’t mind overspraying
The fragrance stays strong for a good while but at the dry down you get reminded again that most designers are limited by the budget which shows the low quality notes in the dry down almost cloying
Performance was very good

SmellMyCheese

Nice blend of tobacco and honey which reminds me of one of my favorite sweet tobacco fragrances in Pdm Herod but with a lighter touch on the sweetness and a very nice twist with the fruity berry notes. The mate note also pops more when you go in close. Great balance in this blend.

A very nice fragrance that I think would shine in the fall.

silthrill

Fruit salad with honey dressing. Fruity fresh opening, sweet honey dry down. If you’re looking for a photorealistic honey fragrance, this is it. This will attract all the bears.

DGouveia

This is sweet but there is something that just makes this pleasant and balanced, like someone that has a grandeur about them but doesn't make a parade out of it, a relaxed opulence, if you will.
Opens with a very evident mango but on my skin, it meshes with a slightly dirty musk. After a few minutes you get the honeyed woods but in the back there is a sharpness that controls it. Ends with a amber-vanillla-musk combo.
In theory i would absolutely hate this but i actually like it. Dare I say, would maybe even wear it for a night out.
Thank you Naomi for making me question all of my perfume universe.

ScentedPlaza

I love the ever changing notes in this. Mango pulp, coconut water, indolic honey, warm amber, vanilla, tobacco. A dash of dry mate, almost hay like. This perfume is sweet and sour.. syrupy and feels almost hot. Mmm... Pure bliss!

Eldee123

I fell in love with Or du Serail from the first opening. On me, it started with mango coconut and then dries down to a very tropical creamy vanilla..with a bit of spice. Gorgeous, gorgeous GORGEOUS! And the performance is perfect. On skin or clothes, this trails without a doubt. My opinion, full bottle worthy.❤️

rznzy

This opens up really fruity and then settles down to honey tobacco. To me smells like Herod on steroids and also it lasts really really long

Leama

Fruity, dusty tobacco, honey bomb!
Its super lush and addictive, love it :)

Mspin91

I find it so interesting that people are getting tobacco and smoke on this. I get almost none. A tiny amount. A very very interesting strange fragrance, but I am thinking it's not for me (working my way through a sample).

On me, this starts fruity. Definitely very sweet tarte mango. A bit of rum. As it dries I get more and more honey. Still a background of fruit, but overwhelmingly honey. Then the honey mixes with amber and a tiny bit of tobacco. As it dries I lose most of the mango. Only a trace of it is left, with the majority of the scent being honey and amber.

Overall, this reads as very gourmand to me, which is not my favorite type of scent. But, like all Naomi Goodsir scents, this makes a statement. It does exactly what it sets out to do. It provides a sweet golden scent with a background of amber-y tobacco. I think this is primarily a honey scent. If you like the floral, slightly bitter sweet scent of honey, this is for you.

I think I would only really wear this scent on a beach vacation.

theuntrainednose

I have a sample.

---

Unusual. A bitter, herbal, smoky honey scent. I have never smelled anything like this before. Honey, clearly honey, but not in the way that you expect. And a modern bitterness, like dry herbs. And smokiness but not like incense, more like wood smoke.

I like it!
--
After a couple of hours it mellows a bit, losing a bit of the bitterness herbalness and gaining some fruity notes (I can smell the coconut and something that reminds me of unripe fruit) and woodiness (the cedar comes through beautifully). The honey keeps being the star, a boozier honey, not quite mead as it's not fizzy but dark, sort of what honey brandy would be.

I continue to like it :)

LMBelvi

Or du Serail—a really nice opening with lots of fruit and honey. But after an hour it turns way too soft and powdery—it’s a no.

KKJ

I was so ready to love this after reading notes breakdown. However, after 15 minutes, this turned into simple cigarette smoke in an unattractive way. I was intrigued by the tropical fruit note in the beginning, so in the dry down at first I thought I burnt something smelling nothing but smoke. I am sure it’s all skin chemistry. I just wished it worked for me.

Iceblocks

This is gorgeous!

On me, the notes in this combine to form the scent of red rooibos tea - a fruit blend, something sweet. T2 do African Rooibos & Honeybush tisanes - I'm 100% sure I've smelt something like this from them before, though the name of the exact blend is escaping my memory. It's dry, herbal, rich and fruity, like opening up a container of the tea and inhaling deeply. And yes, it is honey-sweet!

I wish I could pick out the individual notes in this a little better but my brain is reading it as a complete picture (rooibos and fruit, and that's it). I wasn't expecting to like this one, but I find myself considering a decant.

Inésanja

If you love the note of honey.
On me this is a very sweet honey fragrance with vanilla and a lot of tobacco.
Honey is the star in here.
Magic is in the dry down.
Its unisex and not a safe blind buy.
Do not blind buy

spumyland

Yum! ... It opens as greedy as a sour cherry and sour Coppa Rica ice cream, as sweet as a Fior di Fragola stick.
Alcoholic rum base, orange, absinthe, a pinch of acidity until dry with sweet nuances of smoky tobacco, honey, vetiver, coconut, oak, fruity ylang, vanilla, cedar, amber and much more ...
On my skin it's like a bar of chocolate filled with raspberry and the whiffs I take are hot, smoky, fermented, sweet, tropical fruity, curious and intriguing.
Sexy. More feminine I think.
As inviting as Hansel and Gretel's house with a steaming fireplace!
Greedy niche.

Or Du Sérail by Naomi Goodsir

A Smokey fruit salad, hell yes!

Starts off with #mango #orange and #citruses dipped in #rum and #honey however to balance the things, #tobacco and #smoke is used to perfection which doesn't make it gourmand by any means.

It's a very unique and appreciable scent and not your regular dark thick tobacco but yes, Smokey!

Each sniff would take you different route and there are not many scents who could do that. It's a must try for people who appreciate #tobacco note in fragrances and I need to buy some more from the house @naomigoodsir ❤️

karolisjachimavicius

I can identify the mango now, after I read some descriptions, but mostly it is a honey bomb. You will definitely get some tobacco from underneath. Reminds me a bit of the JPGaultier squared (?. the incense one). It's simple and plain but I still love it, I had a bottle, because it's much of a character and smelling like honey and beeswax ain't everyday. Would buy another bottle only with a discount, there are many more perfumes to explore. Wouldn't regift it, though. Shite bottle and sprayer, like their goal was to flash in the sky and leave the business. Bottom line, like that band you love from only one song.

UPDATE: I apologize for my hasty conclusions, still had some of it in the bottle, put it on, I now see, it's more complex than I had impression of. But no matter how good it is, I'm still kind of reserved about it, not celebrating. It's probably the "greedy" part the authors mentioned in their description.

Bopha85

I'm absolutely hooked. The top notes is this burst of mango and fruits, 10mins later it becomes this delicious creamy honey gourmand tobacco scent. The drydown is mysterious, sensual and sexy and makes me feel like I'm being comforted and caressed by an older, kind gentleman. Maybe a crush towards a lecturer of some kind? Huge projection and sillage scent is to die for. Very unique and what I would consider a masterpiece.

vetiverica

Opens with mango, leading into smoky rum and a honey-dripped amber accord. As warm as warm can be.

Hellenic Perfumology

A Fruit Basket? Smoke?

I mean man! THIS IS AMAZING! It smells like a tropical fruit basket! With vanilla! Smoke maybe incense or something!

Its a beast as well! This has Character!

If you love Tobacco fragrances and you are looking for a fruity twist! THIS IS IT!

I Mean the fruits are not fresh! They are like you took them and reduced their liquid in a pan! And you get this thing!

Simply outstanding!

A gorgeous Duchaufor creation, it reminds me of the sweet smell of dried sea grass, waving in the sun.

Or Du Serail is a complex, multi-faceted, but approachable gourmand.

A first phase of fruited, tropical rum is fresh to begin, more aromatic in the heart.

A honeyed, vanillic tobacco accord comes in second, developing into the main presentation of this scent after half an hour. The tobacco is warm, sweet and smooth - easy to wear, and very unisex as far as tobacco scents are concerned.

Very likeable, and more approachable than most tobacco scents, which skew heavily masculine. The complexity here is also remarkable, and there is something interesting to discover with each sniff. Or Du Serail is a very high quality blonde tobacco, featuring gourmand threads throughout. A must try for tobacco fans!

GlacialImpala

Sadly to me the opening was the best part. Kind of sour (well more tangy because it's a fruity kind of sour) and that's the only phase it bore any resemblance with any sort of fruit. I was hoping for tangy fruit with a bit of darkness and hopefully beeswax but as soon as it dried on the skin it became something gourmand. Sweet but not heavy, light but not immature like candy. It reminds me the most of Sorriso by Profumum Roma, similar elegant sweetness, only without its cocoa tones obviously.

Fruity stuff is always so fake and overly sweet, in the opening of Or du Serail to me it's just perfect.
Sad.

Valerieb29

Overwhelming honey scent on me. It’s too much, too sweet, can’t pick up any other notes just a honey bomb. Glad I sampled before I blind buying. Not for me I am afraid.

Silverfang

If you can stand for the first 10 minutes when the beeswax and apple hardly presence, then you can enjoy for the rest of the frags life.. after 10 minutes you will smell its beauty and i love it so much! This is the best boozy tobacco even compare to initio side effect!

Dandyman

Welcome to your daily fruit-bomb!

This is the third scent from Naomi Goodsir i am trying out. First was Cuir Velours, wich i think is 10/10 and something i will always keep in my collection.

Second was Nuit de Bakèlite, wich i understood, but can not wear becouse it is too challenging. It´s a lovely scent, but just not for me.

Third try with Or du Serail. The opening is spectacular with all the mango/honey/apple. This is - once again - the challenging part for me, not really comfortable with the overwhelming sweetness. BUT! It is top notch quality straight away, i get that.

As soon as the dry down kicks in, 10-15 minutes, you´ll get a little boozy beezswax with amber. Wonderful! No coconut for me, can´t pick it up. Vanilla and musc, very smooth. Oh, this is a sexy, green/floral/sweet/fruity (?) scent. Guess it´s a frag for warm weather.

What a stunning house, Naomi Goodsir. I can not compare this 3 scents to anything else, i know they are hyped, but i must say it is understandable.

In the end i won´t buy a full bottle, but if YOU do, i salute you! It´s really great stuff from this house, it´s just that i want my frags a bit more austere and acidulated. That´s my problem, not yours. You should go and have a splurge with Or du Serail!

SailorV

First of all, if you care about performance, keep on reading and look into this perfume. It lasts and lasts and lasts. Over night, even through a shower if you don't thoroughly scrub it off. It's intense, but I don't find it overwhelming, because it's so warm and cozy smelling. But I guess that will differ for different noses.

Anyways, this is also a very multifaceted fragrance. Or du Serail opens with a lot of pipe tobacco and an undertone that I perceived as hay first, which must be the mate tea. It's quite herbal.

Soon the fruit notes come out. This is quite an unusual development, in the first moments I thought this would be more on the masculine side of unisex, but it really gets fruitier as it dries down. And sweeter. It turns from dry to juicy, from autumnal to tropical. I smell coconut flakes, dried mango, orange and even a little peach, all spiced with cinnamon and enveloped in a buttery texture. The honey might also play a part in this, but I don't find it dominanting. I'm not sure if this makes sense to anyone else, but I think it's like a modern unisex niche version of feminine 90s orientals a la Cašmir.

Later in the drydown the balsamic notes move into the center of attention, so you're left with a vanillic amber that still has traces of fruits and tobacco.

I'm not that fond of the aromatic opening and don't find this very fitting for myself, but Or du Serail is definitely a unique, complex beauty that does fruity notes in a very natural, high quality style.

L.bss

I really don't like gourmand perfumes, but this.. it's a win again from Naomi goodsir! I have no idea how to describe it, but it's pure bliss!booze, tobacco and dried fruits, soo soo soo gentlemanly and distinguished! and I am sure it would be as good on a woman! refined at the best possible grade. Powerhouse, lasts forever you'll get noticed!

Said that La nuit de Bakelité is still my favourite. That's just impossible to beat ever
I bow to her!

Nikkkit

Yes yes and yes! I feel sexy with this, long lasting, smells rich, sweet and fresh and heavy at the same time - hard to describe, but definitely a "must have" for me. Number 1 from Naomi Goodsir, just look at the notes! They don't lie this time.

Medes

It is one of the few fragrances that proves the smell of pipe tobacco very good and natural
The problem is that fruity and sweet explosion in the opening, that it takes about an hour to reduce its severity.
In the middle phase, the smell of tobacco is more evident
But that sweet mango note doesn't leave the scent until the end of the work, it only gets obsolescent and sticky.

zhiang0113

The first minute was unexpectedly fresh, with a burst of bright, sparkling apple immediately grabbing my attention. This phase was short-lived, however; it quickly settles down into a rich, boozy honey. A dark, smoky tobacco quickly comes to the forefront too, preventing the honey from getting too sweet.

Or du Serail remains as a primarily honey-tobacco scent throughout its lifetime on my skin, but different elements pop up from time to time; a powdery coconut-vanilla blend, medicinal, ambery beeswax and labdanum - they add subtle layers of complexity.

It oozes sophistication and ostentatiousness, and makes a good nighttime/cold weather fragrance. Projection is good, with one spray from a sample vial projecting for 3 hours or so, and longevity as well - it's still detectable as a skin scent 10 hours later.

Bubbles1964

Who tipped over the potpourri vase? The opening is a powerful trifecta of sweet honey, fermented fruit and a tropical cocktail. Or Du Serail was almost too much for me but fortunately it changes and morphs rather quickly. Within 15 minutes I was transported to a Havana nightclub.

In the drydown this perfume blooms. Or Du Serail is layered and complex and most importantly, wearable. It still reminds me of potpourri, but it’s softer. Tobacco is my problem child note, but here it’s playing a supporting role, apparent but not too loud. Surprisingly no single note dominates, Or Du Serail is smooth, natural and unique —a word I try to avoid unless it’s warranted. This is Duchaufour at the top of his game.

I would wear Or Du Serail in the colder months only. Despite that difficult opening, the rest is expressive perfume art.

Victorchachi

Incredible fragrance.

First time I smelled this my brain conjured the smell of a 1890s high class prostitute from Paris.

Now, to say that a fragrance could possibly evoke something like that in someone's mind is saying a lot.

Of course, that is just me (and a friend, who also thought the same), but essentially this is a very sweet fragrance which smells prominently like orange, pomelo and honey. Ultimately wearable by men and women, since it will give a different vibe to each gender.

The drydown, to me, is not as pleasant as the opening. You know when you were little that sometimes used to leave licked lollipops on random places? Well, it smells just like those. Not necessarily bad, but it definitely reminds me of that. It also gives me some Valentino Uomo vibes in the drydown, but gently.

Do I recommend it? Yes, but first get the sample kit for 15 euros. Naomi's Goodsir PR is amazing. The first time I ordered it the delivery got wrecked during arrival and never came. I told them and they sent another one the day after without any hesitation!

9/10.

This is an impressive work of olfactive art that manages to be exceptionally expensive smelling, unique and wearable at once. Somehow, despite the gourmand notes, this fragrance has an old school elegance I find evocative. I would be curious to know how many other fragrances partner tobacco, coconut and a stewed fruitiness, because unexpectedly they blend together perfectly. It surprises me that another reviewer says it isn't refined, because I think it is in fact the epitome of refined.

For me, by far the predominant note is tobacco, and it's much leafier and more savoury on the dry-down than, say, TF Tobacco Vanille. Contrary to the notes, as far as the gourmand aspects go, I find this less tropical and more like a spicy chutney. More dominant on my skin than the creamy sweetness coming from the vanilla and ylang ylang is the pepperiness from the oak and cedar.

Whilst different for sure, this would fit well on the shelf next to the equally exquisite Atelier des Ors Lune Feline.

Harlem_Shaikh

I really, really love the opening of Or du Sérail…. It begins with a wonderful tidal wave of heavily liqueured, ambered sweetness. Brandy oak barrels bob along a vast ocean of Calvados, whose waves spread apple’d alcoholism out as far as the eye can see. A tiny suggestion of rum lurks at the edges, next to the liqueured apricot of the davana flower. A second wave of cognac hits you, but this one is infused with the aroma of bright red apples, as well as a sprinkling of tart red fruits, and a small slice of orange. None of them feel cooked, gooey, or saturated with sweetness. Rather, they are fresh fruits with a distinct nuance of tartness.

watchaka

Something must be wrong with my nose. All I get is urine and sour potpourri. More sour potpourri than urine. I've tried it on different days in different weather, and I'm not understanding why people are getting any coconut or anything even close to sweetness or real fruit? I can understand how there can be bitter honey in here, but that's the only other note I pick up. I checked again and again and definitely sprayed the correct perfume. I won't give up, because I am in love with the Naomi Goodsir line, but I am scratching my head.

Edit: After much practice and sniffing and confirming that I am smelling the correct perfume, I can understand the "pie" reference and how some noses are getting "tropical" and "jammy", etc. I tried sniffing this on anything else besides my skin, so I got it. Even so, it's still not anything I am interested in. My verdict is that my skin is going to magnify the sour potpourri until the end of time, so I will just shut my nose, finish the juice I have, and move on.

Emorandeira

Trying to compare It with other perfumes i find It Closer to soir de lune by sisley than to arabie ir tobacco vanille. The most i can feel is the honey and on the background the tropical fruits, a bit similars to the ones in Moonlight by Lilian. The longevity is good but the projection only average. It is a good perfume, very sweet with the animalic vibe of honey.

Too sweet for me to the point of dizziness, unfortunately... My favorite from NG, surprisingly, turned out to be Couir Velours, and I am not into leather at all.

DT953

Oh my many gods, I needed this. So I got it. The packaging is amazing PLUS you can dab it. It's truly strong enough for that! This is the sexiest, warmest fragrance in my current collection and possibly my favourite scent of all time. Smells mildly foody but that boozy opening is a god sent. No one I've showed this to dislikes it. Feels like a Euro christmas. Naomi Goodsir truly only releases quality fragrances under her name...

tessture

Very citrus fruity with floral notes and nothing at all what I like. Not mall-like, at least, but an oily, dense fruity floral. Well crafted but wears on me like an old fashioned heavy perfume. Not my thing.

Blacktundras

It smells sweet overall, but there's this urine filled grandma vibe competing with the sweetness, that I can't see myself wanting a full bottle of.

ariahokas

A masterpiece. Like usual, I don't share the same impressions as others here. It's a very unique fragrance to my nose. I'm a gourmand sucker and have smelled hundreds, but this one still manages to be unique and special. It's a very Jekyll and Hyde kind of fragrance.

The opening is thick, jammy, and dense fruit syrup. But it's a very realistic fruit, not candy-like like some have suggested. The fruit notes share DNA with Pulp by Byredo. Almost a dirty, slightly fermented fruit note. But behind all that is a very potent rum and coconut layer with a trail of tobacco and woods. That's the Jekyll.

The Hyde is the dry down. It's also somewhat sweet, but it's essentially a tobacco, wood and honey combo that lingers forever. But there are traces of that unique fruity opening, only the fragrance stays on the 'dirty' side. It's NOT dry in any way, it's dense and thick.

It some way, it feels like the spiritual sister to Xerjoff Mamluk(oud and honey). If Mamluk is all about oud and honey and sits low and heavy on the skin but is potent, Or du Serail is the same way but covers fruit, booze and tobacco and also sits low and heavy to the skin.

This is a sensual scent that makes your heart mellow. The best unisex fragrance. Honey, cigarettes, the finest umber, scented rum, scent of rich dry fruits ... with a lover, you wear a gown in front of a fireplace and eat a heavy Stolung with a rich liquor ... I bought this fragrance during the Italian trip. It will be memories of my life.

Cherry_Darling

Really enjoying this, takes me to the souks of egypt / dubai with all the sweet / apple flavoured shishas and oriental lokhums. All those gourmand scents combined - yumm! Strong matcha on the drydown, which comes too quick. All those gorgeous fruity notes only last a moment :(

darrenwrite

To my nose the very opening of this is wonderful, i defo get the apple and melon but that quickly fades away. The fruity notes are still there in the drydown but not as predominant. The honey comes out more in the drydown. Overall it is quite sweet and a little fruity but doesn't overly excite me.

adrienn99

EXTREMELY SWEET...80% honey & sugar, 10% coconut and 10% tobacco on me.... smells like cotton-candy.
only for those who don't like their scents serious.

btpaulen

As others have mentioned - the initial smell of this is awful. But the heart-notes and drydown is nice.

epicurean

The first five minutes of this scent smelled like stale urine on my skin. Fortunately I didn't rush to wash it off, because this phase didn't last. Eventually this develops into a concentrated form of hot toddy on my skin. Lots of honey, booze, with hints of tobacco and coconut. Nicely done, but just not my cup of tea.

vaniljapulla

Honey, syrup and brown sugar boiled together and left to simmer for a week.

Splendid! What a perfect scent for late spring and summer! I was intending to buy Cuir Velours and received a sample of this beauty as a bonus. It was love at first sniff! Ended up with this as a full bottle instead of the other one! It smells sooooo good! Yes, I smell coconut and I adore honey, but this does those notes in diifferently. I do not get any tobacco, by the way (but yes, I adore Back to Black, sigh). Mmmmmm! Mmmmmmm! Mmmmmmmm!

wxmath

Outstanding fragrance! Sweet of course but in a very good way. The rum, tobacco and and coconut temper the honey and there is a little darker side in the drydown that balances the top notes perfectly. I also get a fruity note in the drydown. Great sillage and longevity, I love the smell. A blind buy, I am very pleased and is even better than I thought it would be. I have other sweet colognes in my collection but this is definitely one of the best. Reminds me a little of Nishane Fan Your Flames but I think this is even better.

Bbjr

I've gone back to my sample 5 times now as something keeps drawing me back. The initial blast is a fruit explosion but that settles very fast. What I get in the dry down is a very nice tobacco that is tempered with a slight hint of apple or some fruit. Someone below mentioned this is what Back To Black should have been and I agree, this is BTB without the harsh tobacco twist. This is a great scent with better than average longevity and projection is just right. A winner in my book. Full bottle in the future.

heissen

I love Bertrand Duchaufour and his prodaucts but composition tobacco and honey is not for me.
this cologne is very excellent for lovers Tobacco and honey composition.
I Prefer this product to Tobacco Vanille from Tom Ford.
Sorry it is not for me.

This is a very sweet scent that instantly reminded me of a particular holiday. I asked my love what he thought of it and he uttered the exact word that came to my mind when I smelled it - Christmas!!! There are those moments in a relationship that solidify why exactly you mesh well with someone and this was one of those. The exact word that was in my mind and the exact feeling that this evokes is indeed Christmas. There is heavy berry, apple and fruit, with honey & vanilla and then this gorgeous shisa tobacco. It smells as though there are savory elements almost missing because it is so laden with festivity. You could almost expect to smell a turkey, a ham and stuffing accompanying it. This is not an everyday perfume but one that could bring comfort for me if I needed it. It's like comfort food but with perfume.

rosenoir

This is concentrated! I did three sprays on my arm and as the weather heated up the scent was extremely present. At least I know it's a high quality concoction. I had to eventually wash it off as it was a bit too sweet for my taste. For fans of fruity sweet scents.

amirali0072000

I bought a bottle of this magnificent perfume last month and finally I opened it yesterday. It was great. I like the Fruity accord mixed with a sweetness note. I think the main notes are Leather and Honey.. It is suitable for cold seasons with good longevity and projection.

babydoll77

Sweet meh-ness...smells like the majority of celeb perfumes out there so besides the powdery dry down and it being a close-to-the-skin type of scent, I can't say anything else about it.

ConsumerThis

Wayyyy to rich and thick like slumber house offering of kiste or something. Like a sweet cranberry on steroids times 10 strong. I don't see this being wearable or even present. Maybe someone else olfactory sensetories will work in a different way and sense some other notes I don't and will like it, but huge pass. I do know for sure this smells nothing like Hermes Ambre Narguile and some other scents that have been mentioned. I own them and like them a lot too.

vallensvelvet

This is too rich for me. The coconut is very fatty and opulent, in the manner of a blowsy tuberose; this then overpowers the absolutely gorgeous sweet tobacco.

The materials smell very high quality, and if you like tropical scents perhaps you will like this. For me, it is a scrubber: too heady.

42gr

When I compare Or du Serail side by side with Sova Slumberhouse.

Serail is more muted than Sova,

The tobacco notes in Serail are in much better proportion.

Serailis also a bit sweeter than Sova.

Sillage is moderate

Like it very much.

jeffwithfrags

This is exactly what Back to Black should have been.

The main differences are the replacement of almond in the kilian with coconut here and the coconut is given a real kick by the sweet beeswax and ylang.

However, the coconut really becomes a deal breaker for me as it simply turns into a bomb and has me really sad as I would certainly buy this on sight if it were as subdued as the apple (which I really wanted here).

This scent is also boozy! I think the excesses of rum spoils it too imo, crossing the line a bit too far into 'hangover' territory. It would have been truly great if she had toned down the coconut and rum a little.

But other than that, it's all good.

The apple, or the smallest shades of it, is tart and lovely and a dash of mango at the start too. Bright, sweet fruity and coconut-rummy.

The sweetish apple note is really amazing, I again can't get enough of saying I wish there was more, rather than the masses of coconut because for once it's both a sweet and bold apple, like apple syrup. Wow.

This can be too heady-sweet and gourmand for many but a coconut-loving woman can definitely try this as a fun (but very expensive) bash.

Definitely a try but a buy, this will divide opinion a lot but it's far far better than Kilian's awful B2B -at least on me.

The quality is equal or even surpasses Creeds. I only wish she took out the tropical nut for something smoother or more mellow at the start like suede or more of the apple or lemon to freshen things a bit.

A good try, almost a hit!

My rating: 7/10.
Quality: 10/10.

dkar16

AWESOME. Beautiful coconut, rum, honey, mango and vanilla. I love this for those chilly evenings, careful on the trigger though, on me this thing is a beast. 14+ easily.

theodore29

I get too much sour apple...that tangy smell you get from apple juice in a can. Maybe its the cranberry that pushes it in that direction. The tanginess remains in the dry down... but I can't help but associate this kind of tanginess with fresh urine. You do get a dry woody/smoky character underneath. Maybe the story is "a guy that drank too much apple juice to put out the campfire"?

Belin

Not for me. Really too sweet for my taste and I don't dislike fruity perfumes. Actually Manguier Metisse from Huitieme Art is 1 of my favourites. But Or du Serail is like wearing an overripe pineapple round your neck. Maybe it is the honey that turns me off, like it does in Kilian's Back to Black. I prefer Cuir velours!

svetlana.kogan.73

Strong opening of tropical bitterness. This is a very prickly, in your face fragrance. The animalic vibe though not mentioned on the list of component oils, is very strong on my skin. The balsamic sourness then kicks in.. I feel like I have been marinated, seriously. This may be a great fragrance for a very sweet person who wants to show off hers or his beastly side.

Lana148

Interesting gourmand. Sweet, sour and balsamic, I smell a lot of honey here with some mix of fruits, coconut and little tobacco. Pleasant but for some reason it just doesn't grab me.

seekritdude

Well looking at the notes and reviews of this I was very interested. And it just so happens that a member of the community was kinda enough to even make a small sample and send it to me. I would name him but he wanted to remain nameless but thanks to him...

So what did I get out of this? Well heh funny story it was bound to happen eventually after all these years. But well I first used this on a piece of paper to test it on paper, and then sadly.. Accidentally split the rest all over my carpet.

.... -______-

So this review will only be how it smells on paper and my now carpet but on those its a huge fruity very sweet sorta pie bomb. It kinda reminds of Ambre Narguile actually. But it umm not as well done version. I dont eat pie, or really like it. But that one is so well done that I really enjoy it for what it is. This however is like a pie that just has to many ingredients bursting out of it, not very well balanced. I was really hoping to get some of this tobacco and other nuisances of the fragrance as again I really liked the notes. But on paper and well carpet sampling. I got none of this. Just a very messy fruity pie with more thick jam paste all over the place.

Pretty bummed about this, but for what its worth id still like to sample it on skin and hopefully this other facets will come out.

lifesurfeit

Very sweet coconut for me on first sniff. Quickly develops into rum and cedar, almost like I can smell the wooden cask. Left with very faint smell of musk. On drydown I get honey and laubdanum the most. Overall wouldn't wear again. Seems very old fashioned and overly sweet.

rossyegio5

Dolce, dolce, dolcissima fragranza... Prendete Layla K, Anbar Tola, Lei Mazzolari, aggiungete caramella mou liquida e miele e otterrete questo prodotto... oltre ad un picco glicemico.
Eccessivo.

BlackAmberMoon

A warm, tropical fruity floral that takes the genre to another level. The tangy opening dries down to a honeyed coconut base tinged with ylang, amber, and tobacco. The tobacco adds a smokey edge that prevents the fragrance from becoming too sweet. It's big and lush, so spray cautiously as it has huge sillage. Refined? Absolutely not, but when you want a yummy, sticky, tropical blast, it's just glorious. Totally over the top.

tymanski

i really like this one, not quite as much as bois d'ascese (which is more challenging and generally impressive) but enough to buy it. i really don't get'coconut' at all, but a wonderfully balanced tobacco/booze/woods richness that never cloys or flatlines. duchaufour has stretched a bit outside his incensey comfort zone yet OdS bears his trademark heavy/sheer effect, which over the course of a good 8 hour lifespan stays incredible cozy, vibrant and just perfect for this season (fall!). at times this smells very close to something slumberhouse might do if Josh Lobb went a little more 'commercial' with something like Baque or Sova. tobacco scents rarely work on me (duchaufour's havana vanille also does though) but this excellent frag really connects to my nose. yummy!

alfarom

I'm a huge fan of Naomi Goodsir's line of fragrances and Bois D'Ascese have gained a holy grail status in my book pretty fast but, unfortunately, I can't say I'm digging Or Du Serail as others do.

There's an hyper-realistic fruit opening which is quite ok (mainly berries and something else kind of green/ sourish) but then, sweetness comes into play giving birth to a boozy honeyed-tobacco driven middle phase which is possibly the farhest thing to my tastes. There's an overall coconut vibe going on which gave me an instant headache. There's nothing to do, with very very few exceptions made, me and gourmands don't get along at all.

The base shows sweetness to be slightly more in check but it's a sort of been there done that kind of woody-musky-ambery thing.

It's well done et all if you like the genre but I'm afraid it's a pass for me.

rickyrebarco

Or du Serail opens with strong alcohol notes, strong coconut and mango, sweet fruit, cloyingly so. Spice and tobacco are nice. The final drydown is lovely with a honeyed tobacco, but longevity is not the greatest. Overall I do not find this one to be worth its price.

Q80

0the top note was quite promising. i smelled that kind of dried sweetish fruits mixed with tobacco (i guess the sweets was the red berries, the beeswax, & the honey), as it dried down right after 5 to 10 minutes. it changed a bit around & honestly i felt since the beginning the top note has that similarity & wasn't sure what was it, and it showed up in the middle note quite clear. it has that mostly identical similarity with Tabacca by Costamor with an extra caramel & biscuits as of the addition of Teddy grahams. it is quite nice but not as the first 2 Naomi Goodsir's. i won't get this one cause i already have Tabacca ;)

Edit (6th Sept 2016) I was quite surprised how the coconut struck me when i applied it after 2 years! i never smelled this amount of coconut when i first applied it on my skin 2 years back! i'm sure it's because i just recently realized that the coconut is one of my favorites note, AND the number of fragrances that i have sniffed the past 2 years made me differentiate notes quite well. Now, It is quite the natural coconut oil with tobacco, cognac, beeswax, honey, apricots, and vanilla. To be honest it's not similar to "Tabacca", as it has an enormous silage and longevity. It is quite well made, and superbly balanced. Naomi is quite a master in mastering my type of fragrances.

Edit (31 Aug 2019) after almost 3 years from the last time I checked this blend .. hmm... it's a gourmand blend that mixes coconut, honey, and tobacco. I dont detect any of those fruits BUT a tiny whiff that comes & go every almost 30 second that consists of fruity note that mixes apples with tiny bit of mango but remains hazy cause the coconut is conquering this blend up with beeswax. And no, it doesn't smell like a lotion or sun tan because of the coconut, it's just a beautiful gourmand-ish and honestly right after 5 years from my first test, it does smell tiny bit like "tabacca" by Costamor and worth a full bottle.

As a point of reference, I really enjoyed Bois d’Ascese but wasn’t very taken with Cuir Velours. A friend who’s quite into sweet and fruity scents had been raving about this one, so I was looking forward to taking it for a spin even though I knew it might not be to my taste. This is essentially a honeyed fruit and tobacco scent with a bit of musky cocoa peeking through. It takes some of the bigger commercial successes of what’s become a bit of a stale genre and casts them in a more grown up and articulate light while still retaining a degree of playfulness.

At the outset, the honey and fruits are strong, bordering on a tad sickly, but they tame quite fast. The honey is dry—somewhat akin to Tobacco Vanille, and certainly less powdery than Back to Black. The tobacco note is exceptional—what appears to be the same kind of chord that’s been popping up lately in scents such as Tom Ford’s Tobacco Oud. It’s somewhat dusty, hyperreal, and extremely cozy. The fruits seem to lean more toward berry than the standard cherry that this genre leans upon too often, and I think I might even be detecting some strawberry, but it’s all very well rendered. Rather than juicy or tart, the fruits might be described as somewhere between stewed or candied—not overly sweet or syrupy, yet still gourmand. The whole effect is like pressing your nose into a bag of flavored tobacco.

It wears fantastically—warm, but not cloying—taking the genre to the next level. But what surprised me is that Duchaufour is behind this one as, frankly, I haven’t been that moved by anything he’s done for some time. This is thoughtful and expressive as opposed to predictable and trite (although I will add that the dry down is a lame, off-the-shelf amber). It’s not reinventing the wheel, but it’s certainly building upon what has come along before with some style of its own. Wide appeal is clearly part of this fragrance’s design, but not at the expense of taste; there’s no cheap gimmickry or paraphrasing of what came before. Although it’s not exactly to my taste, it is something I would wear on occasion during the colder months. For fans of tobacco-centric perfumes, honeyed fruit scents, and Naomi Goodsir’s other releases, this should be on your radar.

MarketaBankova

Fantastic! It reminds me Kilian´s Back to Black a bit but it´s softer, more fruity, eatable, optimistic. A new must have for me.
