Interview with Sui Wenjing with Xu Lijia (English Translation)

fivecentimeterspersecond:

Chinese Pairs skater Sui Wenjing sat down for a discussion/interview with Olympic Gold Medalist in sailing, Xu Lijia. I did a loose translation of the 10 minute rapid-fire q&a in the beginning segment, so this is a detailed translation of the long discussion starting at 11:10.

If you’d like to listen, there’s a dropbox link someone sent me of it (since you need to download an app to listen) and someone also uploaded on bilibili.

I have to first apologise because this is such an ignorant question to ask - when viewed through the lens of western naming conventions, are Sui and Han equivalent to the skaters' 'first' names or 'surnames'?

sui and han are their surnames. in chinese the surname comes before the first name, but announcers will follow western conventions and say “wenjing sui” and “cong han”

I'm so happy for S/H, it was like 1am for me when they competed and the day before I did not sleep to see the girls, I was falling asleep, but when they finally skated, they injected me with a good dose of adrenaline, I I was so excited, I struggled to fall asleep, haha. Had they had two clean programs before?. Whatever happens in the other disciplines, S/H´s performance will be the highlight of the whole event for me 😍

wenjing mentioned this in the press conference afterwards, but the last time they skated two clean programs was at worlds 2015 in Shanghai. han cong also said in the press conference that he felt they didn’t skate this program enough and wished this season were longer, and we definitely feel the same :)
