Avant Garde by Lanvin is a Amber Woody fragrance for men. Avant Garde was launched in 2011. The nose behind this fragrance is Shyamala Maisondieu. Top notes are Pepper, Pink Pepper, Juniper and Bergamot; middle notes are Beeswax, Lavender, Cardamom and Nutmeg; base notes are Tobacco, Benzoin, Amber and Vetiver.

Lanvin launches a new male fragrance called Avant Garde. As the name suggests, this scent is imagined as a modern interpretation of masculinity and elegance designed for "modern day dandies."

Perfumer Shyamala Maisondieu signed this oriental - woody composition:“ I wanted to create an olfactory interpretation of the casual elegance of Lanvin, with a streamlined, masculine and decidedly unique composition. Woody fragrances fascinate me. I find them chic and comfortable. Their warm, sensual strength attracts me as much as inspires me. The world that I’ve created for Avant Garde combines noble raw materials like vetiver and benzoin, with other surprising materials such as beeswax and tobacco. The spices? I have always loved working with them because you have to be able to handle them carefully to find the right amount, the right strength, of freshness, so that it is both spicy and incisive. I also played with a unique and powerful innovative note: Georgywood. This raw material, developed using the very latest technology, has woody amber tones which chime perfectly with the fragrance’s manly architecture”.

Its top notes combine Italian bergamot, Madagascar pepper, pink peppercorn and juniper. The heart is composed of lavender, nutmeg, cardamom and beeswax. Intensive vetiver blends with benzoin, tobacco and Georgywood molecule in the base.

Available as 30, 50 and 100 ml Eau de Toilette.

Nothing like La Nuit but it is a well blended juice!

paligap

Indiscriminate use of superlatives to describe our fragrances degrades the accuracy of our descriptions.
But, by God, Lanvin Avant Garde's heavenly balance is absolutely stunning!

pedrohenriquebastoss

I bought a 100ml bottle when I learned it was going to be discontinued. But after one year or two my bottle started licking oil from the face where the spray fits in the bottle and put it aside. 4 years later I refund my bottle with almost the whole cardboard box socked on oil. Apparently the licking has stopped.

This is nothing like La Nuit de l’homme, it’s a different fragrance.
The beeswax and tobacco are so prominent and it’s very unique and high quality fragrance.

What if I told you there's a discontinued fragrance similar to La Nuit De Lhomme, LE MALE ELIXIR, and Prada Black
but better than all three...
The name is Avant Garde by Lanvin

Bergamot and Honey drizzled over fresh Tobacco and Woods.

Neither of my bottles leak @ Mr. Boston.

It's crazy that a fragrance like this has so many different perceptions by people on here. This was love at first smell for me. I do wish the longevity was a tad bit better, but I still smell hours into the day, just close to the skin. No complaints otherwise.

Avant Garde by Lanvin is a woody, balsamic, warm and sweet fragrance.

Its output is very pleasant, it is sweet but not cloying, very spicy, and a little floral, where lavender is very noticeable, although the most outstanding notes are tobacco, honey and benzoin. This last note along with a woody accord are notable especially in the dry down, where it bears some similarity to Body Kouros.

Being a sweet fragrance, its ideal use would be in seasons such as autumn and winter, however I think that it could also be used on cool spring days. The use of spices and woody notes gives it a somewhat sensual appeal, which I have seen is very pleasing to both men and women.

Its sillage is low, but it stays on the skin for a long time, in my case it has been more than 12 hours.

Another attraction of this fragrance is its price, which is relatively low. I would recommend it to anyone who knows and enjoys fragrances like Body Kouros, Pure Havane or Michael Kors for Men.

The only drawback is that it is becoming increasingly difficult to find it.

As a long time user or La Nuit De'l Homme this perfume is a great switch up from time to time. Avant Garde feels like a darker heavier flanker of La Nuit De'l Homme, the prominent cardamom note is punchy with warm amber accords. While La Nuit De'l Homme is more of a close encounter intimate frag this one has better projection and longevity.

Got myself a 2011 bottle and I've been using it for a couple weeks now. Gave it around 5/6 wearings and I've got to be honest at first sniff it didn't blow me away.

So, the day before yesterday i sprayed this on before my prayers and that beeswax note is just stunning. Fast forward to today and I wore that shirt again and I could still pick up faints sweet notes which could possibly be the benzoin and Amber working together.

Very well blended scent which is perfect for all weathers! Must try from Shyamala Maisondeau.

Mr. Boston

Beautiful. One of the best designer dry downs ever.

Terrible packaging quality control. I’ve never seen a bottle that didn’t leak.

While waiting for JPG Le Male Elixir to show up at sample sites I decided to layer Le Male Le Parfum with Lanvin Avant Garde to simulate what Le Male Elixir smells like in my mind. And wowowowow y'all gotta try this layering combo! If Le Male Elixir smells half this good then it's a definite buy.

RAVIDIDIT

It smells fine, you can definitely pick up the honey note as it dries down. There are many in the gourmand resinous family that, similar to this, give you the same general scent. I certainly wouldn’t overpay for this, in my collection it’s forgettable other than the said honey note that’s a slightly unique twist. I will say the bottle is gorgeous, sleek, futuristic, elegant.

Rob321x

When this first came out, this was one of the best fragrances you can get for cheap, the prices have risen of course, but this and midnight in Paris were so cheap it’s crazy to see the prices they are at now! Edit: I see people selling this for 500$-800$ now lol!

BGBG

Cardamom and Tonka come first. Then comes the candied sugar or the honey. Leather in the background. Like la Nuit de l'Homme from YSL with honey and leather.

Bradjohnson54

Dark, smooth, sweet, tobacco. Definitely has a similarity to CK Shock. I guess I can understand the comparison to LNDL, because it faintly shares some resemblances. Beautiful tobacco forward fragrance. Like pipe tobacco. If you can find it for a decent price, don't hesitate to pull the trigger. Shame it's been discontinued

Jonathanelsher3

Dark, smooth, and resinous masculine fragrance merged up and blended well with rich tobacco, beeswax, and warmth. It's mysterious and dark and its versatility is pretty high along with the superb performance.

HorlicksB4Bed

One of my all time favourite fragrances for Autumn nights.
It's that good i have acquired 3 bottles over the years.
Will never be without this.

lovethatsmellalot

When I first smelled this, I thought of the smell of freshly shampooed casino carpets in vegas. I mean, the smell of the carpets is somehow clean and fresh, and it mixes with the tobacco scent in the air. You know, the highly colored, swirly, busy patterned casino carpets in some high end Vegas casino. I was a bit off put, to be honest. I thought this might be another Versace the Dreamer situation, as when I first began building my collection I blind bought that and thought that it smelled like sweaty balls. I have no idea how I progressed from that to thinking it smells amazing, but here we are.

With Avant Garde, however, I immediately got compliments about its heavenly scent from two women who tend to think all colognes "smell like a smoker". It's ironic that the one cologne I think smells actually like a smoker, they like. Scratching my head.

Honestly, so happy I purchased this back in the day when it was considered a cheap, niche quality scent that absolutely should be added to your collection - a steal for the money. I have a lot of other tobacco fragrances from cheap to expensive, and nothing smells like this.

By the way, the sprayer on this one is poorly made and somehow the little sprayer that goes on the top of the plastic stem came loose. It sprays just fine, but it is barely hanging on to the stem and will come off with the slightest angled push. I was thinking about replacing my bottle because it was a little annoying. When I saw the prices this goes for now I was astonished but get it. It commands those prices because there is no good substitute.

Rob321x

As the reviewer said below me, is this fragrance worth 100-200$? Absolutely not. You can find some of the best for that price. I would say if this was 30$ I would jump all over it. But this is nowhere near worth the price people are selling it at.

Shugenja

Is this worth the huge prices on line today? NO! Nothing is, really. But, this is a beautiful dance of tobacco and beeswax that is not unique, but executed to perfection.
It is spicy and requires a few extra sprays to give the wearer a nice scent cloud, but the payoff is heavenly.

I am so glad I stocked up when I had the chance. This is my cold weather signature scent and I am proud to wear it on any occasion.
If you see it on a shelf for a decent price, buy it. You will enjoy it very much.

Matux

Sweet, without the diabetic coma, I would say more than La Nuit de L'Homme, which is, IMHO, spicier.

It feels really good, as I mentioned, somehow sweet, balsamic, lactonic, the tobacco is of the kind people describe when it is mixed with essences, i.e. not tobacco leaves, rather pipe tobacco. It is long-lasting, does not project like a nuclear bomb if wearers spray the usual amount (four). It feels heavy to the nose (those molecules...)

Drawbacks: not that original - I get the same descriptors from others that are not in the same league, though, that is why I am inclined to describe it as a "generic oriental". Plus, the bottle is not well designed, the spray mechanism is not correctly sealed to the bottle, so it exudes - you better use it before all the content evaporates.

Unfortunately, it has been discontinued, so you either pay a hefty price for it or else you find a replacement - La Nuit de L'Homme and Poker Face can be good alternatives. I may even consider layering them for better results.

guyan

Great fragrance but horrible sprayer that started leaking out of know where.. I bought this for $25-30 back in the day. Wish i had kept track and stocked up.. smfh

ferino5

Very interesting.
But difficult to use.
it is heavy

When I first heard about Lanvin Avant Garde, without reading the note breakdown, I immediately thought of a cold, dark, green/blue type of fragrance; the bottle's look actually reinforced this opinion. I was terribly wrong.

Avant Garde is a sweet honey-tobacco cold-weather fragrance that borrows a few pages from similar late 2000, early 2010's fragrances; it opens with a forward, slightly sour tobacco (bordering cherry, as often tobacco accords do), which at first may smell a bit harsh and aggressive, but that ultimately smooths out and melts quite nicely with a very sweet honey accord.

The drydown keeps the sweet ambery theme, and embraces you in a comfortable hug, before adding in the long run an incensy note with a subtle smoky side that really reminds me the first few seconds when the incense stops burning and starts smoking (surely the benzoin plays a part). The similar Korres' Vetiver Root Green Tea Cedar is a more playful and green version of the genre without a smoky final, while Avant Garde is the more dressed up, darker and serious member of the LNDL-alike family.

This is discontinued and harder and harder to find; is it worth the insane prices online? Absolutely not, but if you find a bottle in some older shops collecting dust, for a fair price, grab it. The bottle is gorgeous except for the 30ml size, where the transparent green-ish glass stripe is replaced by a painted stripe of the same colour; my bottle (batch 04B30B157 from June 2011) leaks from the collar. Strong like, people will like this on you, although the harsh opening is kinda offputting for the first 20 minutes at least. Use it in winter, possibly for a night out.

Rob321x

People are selling this fragrance for 200$ on eBay? Lol. This was so cheap when it came out and the sprayer will guarantee break on you.

theaveragecologneguy

This is less of a review and more of a rant about just how much I hate this bottle.

The scent is absolutely wonderful. The beeswax note is the BEST honey note I've ever smelled in a fragrance. This was an absolute gem when it was available.

The bottle is absolutely atrocious though. First, the cap doesn't stay on. Okay, that's not a huge deal. Moving on. After about a year, the atomizer just casually decided to break off. Like an idiot, I thought if I stored the bottle in my closet it would be fine. Sadly, it wasn't the case. I should have decanted it when I had the chance. I sprayed this one on today and it's been destroyed by oxidation. The beeswax note is nowhere to be found. The scent is just a hollow representation of what the dry down used to be. Barely a skin scent.

I agree with the fine gentleman below. Bring this one back and fix the bottles!

For me , i can smell the honey quite well and its a great scent to be honest , but lanvin what happened for these sprayers you provided in 1st batches ... almost all of them are not working properly , just fix it and bring this scent back guys

konspa

So sad that this was discontinued, and although YSL La nuit del'homme and Korres Vetiver root are similar they don't have the tobacco and the fantastic beeswax notes which make this fragrance smell like wet earth, fresh with spices but a little mysterious as well. In my opinion, this is a classic.

rowan.walters

Avant-garde is a beautiful, but subdued, fragrance that really is quite unique.
Gentle aromatics and a soft pepper note introduce a velvet beeswax sweetness that creates a resinous, ambery sensation of warmth and depth, enhanced by spices.
Avant-garde embraces its wearer in a very pleasant ambery, woodsy tobacco aura.
The dry down is sublime.

“Gentle” is a good way to describe Avant-garde: the overall impression is one of subdued discretion and understatement.
It smells so good it’s almost intoxicating but if only one (or all) of its many facets were more pronounced, and bolder, it would be a real masterpiece
Sillage sits close and intimate after the first hour and performance in winter is up to six hours, but others seem able to detect it long after I have ceased to.

A polite, inoffensive fragrance - the opposite of “in your face”.
Also enigmatic insofar as it smells pleasant, reassuring and somehow familiar - but mysterious and unidentifiable at the same time, if that makes sense.

As a fan of fragrant woods and of wood fragrances Avant-garde was a “coup de foudre” and I grabbed a bottle as soon as I tested it.
A gentlemanly woodsy fragrance.

I have a sentimental attachment to Lanvin - one of the first fragrances I wore as a teen was the old Lanvin Pour Homme in the octagonal (hexagonal?) bottle, and my Mum (who eschewed frivolities like makeup as a “stupidity tax” used to oppress women) used to wear Arpège on special occasions.

The obscene prices on eBay are just depressing - the rudimentary economics of supply and demand infuriatingly transform any discontinued fragrance into a rare and precious commodity.
Really wish I’d had the foresight to buy at least one spare bottle because I used to like wearing this at work and on days of unstructured leisure.
Avant-garde, although avant-garde in many ways, is unique but not quite revolutionary.
It’s a shame it’s been discontinued - with just a bit of tweaking and refinement it really could have been a legend.

Zogdaddy

Amazing scent and bottle design. Definite shades of La Nuit de L’Homme, but it’s own thing. Not as sweet and a little closer to skin scent, but I love it and glad to have found a bottle for a reasonable price. Tobacco and cardamom stand out, but that beeswax is what makes it unique. A great change from all the other tobacco and spice scents, while retaining the scent DNA that makes them attractive. 👍🏼

mutatismutandis

Lanvin Avant Garde is a very gentle, very subtle, very pleasant perfume. It's only ever a skin scent and it needs an extra spray or two more than most perfumes to make it sing. The opening is slightly sweet. I get the bergamot, the pepper, lavender, cardamom and hints of juniper, beeswax and nutmeg at the start. The tobacco joins, well, not so much a party as a discreet, elegant soiree about 20 -25 minutes in. The amber, benzoin and vetiver all come a little while later. In terms of duration, I found if I sprayed the same amount as I always do when testing a perfume for the first time I get just over two hours. However, just one more spray on each arm takes me quite easily to six hours, so you need just a little more to make this go a lot longer.

This is elegant, subtle, well-designed and for the discerning. The "beast mode" yobbos of the world will never appreciate this in a million years. I think this works day or night, any time of year. I think it's exceptionally versatile too in terms of use. I think it works well for everything from a close, romantic occasion all the way to a gentle office scent. The use of beeswax is inspired. This could easily have gone down the artificial, cold honey route instead and ruined the perfume: thank God Madame Maisondieu went for the far more clever option.

It's a shame this has been discontinued. Once again, another elegant, underappreciated number bites the dust when the odious ambroxan bombs, the sickeningly sweet synthetics, the honking cashmeran numbers and the overhyped drivel like One Million and Sauvage march on. If you have the cash to splash, get a (beautifully designed) bottle of this while you still can.

#lanvin #avantgarde

It's a #beeswax and #tobacco treat. Benzoin is used to perfection to trim the harsh tobacco where it stays beautiful and wearable and you don't become cigar yourself. The beeswax after the sweetness residues become a bit animalic so overall it's not overly #sweet or #strong and for me that's what makes it more desirable.

Avant Garde is #smooth, #seductive and realistic to a level that you don't feel any #chemicals being used.

Sadly, (like most of the gorgeous scents) it's been #discontinued and fetching an unrealistic prices.

PS: the post is based on my thoughts and understanding, if you think otherwise try to make your own post around it.

still have 50/100ml from this
it smells fantastic , excellent blend of beeswax, cardamom, lavender, tobacco, pepper
i have yet to found any substitute to this, the closest i encountered was ysl l'homme but it has poor performance and smells generic compared to avant garde

buying only 1 bottle was the biggest mistake i made,
bought a 100ml bottle for only 20usd back in the day

Bfish88

I wore this on my wedding day and it will always have a soft spot in my heart. This was a steal when it was $30 dollars and even though it doesn't project or last as long as vintage La Nuit, it smells better in my opinion. Honeyed tobacco with cardamom spice. It doesn't go away quickly but maintains a close scent bubble, which it's why it was the perfect date night scent for me when I was dating my now wife. I wear this on our Anniversary, dates, and special occasions. This is her favorite and she always knows what it is and I've worn probably 500+ fragrances around her. This may not get worn much by me, but when it does it's always special!

alphairone

Avant Garde is excellent in terms of presentation and not half bad in terms of execution. However, I purchased my bottle when the prices hadn't inflated to preposterous levels, so I am pleased by this beeswax and tobacco treat, but wouldn't have dropped all that cash that's currently being asked for it: it's finely done, but not a mind blower.

Be that as it may, it is a rather beautiful fragrance, particular as it dries and the benzoin sweetens the rough edges of the tobacco, and the beeswax becomes just the tiniest shade more animalic in a manner only found in such materials that come from bees such as the wax, propolis and the like. I think this is the most alluring quality of Avant Garde, what sets it apart from a more uneventful mainstream attempt at a chypre that blends into the wallpaper. It whispers a rawness, suggests depth, but somehow compels you to beg for more. More sprays by mid-day, that is. This would be really remarkable if the base didn't collapse into a murmuring skin scent so abruptly (three or fours in). If there was just one more leftfield ingredient, a carrot seed, a celery seed, maybe a bit of wormwood or another animalic element, I'd be more forgiving.

But that beeswax, ahhh, it's undeniable.

danish_gsm

One of the best combination of benzoin, lavender, cardamom, tobacco and beeswax. This is smooth and seductive. I am sad that this beauty is discontinued.

Kevinpar

I used 3 bottles of this fragrance. I sold the first two due to poor performance(2-3 hours max.) The last one I purchased was so cheap at a discount store $20 for100ml i could not resist and gave it one more chance and I am so glad I did because I finally got a good performer batch by chance(7-8 hours). So be aware batches do matter on this one and how they kept the fragrance.

People say it is similar to pure havane which i totally do not get at all. Yes one has honey and this one has beeswax but they smell nothing alike. It is semi sweet, smooth tobacco, a pinch of vanilla, and spices. The opening is almost gourmond like but turns into something else which is still very pleasant and unique but not like pure havane, la nuit type of smell, it is drier, less sweet, little fruity and more complex.

Imagine the fruiter version of midnight in paris, and take away the leather. The base keeps its sweetness and it dies.

This is not a must have especially if you have small collection or small budget to start up a collection. My overall score is 7,5 due to its uniqeness.

Borun.uy

This is a very interesting proposal by Lanvin, that unfortunately has been discontinued.

It seems as if Avant Garde had been conceived as a ladies' fragrance and then later masculinized by removing some notes and adding some others (tobacco, lavender, vetiver, etc).

The first time I smelled it, I was put off by the harsh opening, but after some minutes it settles and becomes a very captivating scent, which was clearly inspired by Yves Saint Laurent's L'Homme. Avant Garde is more radical than L'Homme, due to some heavy notes like beeswax, tobacco and several spices, so it is also more divisive and less versatile.

Pros: Unusual scent profile. Sexy drydown. Very good performance for an EDT. Good alternative to YSL L'Homme.

Cons: Harsh opening. Leans to the feminine side. Only wearable in cold weather. Not a crowd-pleaser. Discontinued.

fragranticopsy

amazing tobacco scent, suitable for cold weather and even cool spring time.
not a bad performance overall.

ClashDaddy

Lanvin Avant Garde is an absolutely BEAUTIFUL scent, warm and sweet. I am surprised by the reviews of poor longevity, as it projects brilliantly on my skin, two spitzes is enough and you are enveloped in a cloud of solid, pulsating fragrance that is deliciously manly. On clothes, it lasts even longer.

imo, this is a moderate to cool climate perfume, it may be a bit overpowering in high heat.

I only have a 2ml sample but would gladly put down money for a full bottle. Or Two! Sadly it's been discontinued. You can't find it anywhere! As such, it's such a precious juice - but i can't help it, i've been wearing it almost daily since i received mine and now actively hunting for more samples online. It's actually replaced Aventus as my favourite fragrance.

If Lanvin ever brings this back, I'll be lining up to get it. The combination of honeycomb and tobacco is genius and I would be curious to how it would smell with a smokey note mixed in as well.

Update: Managed to procure the last remaining 4.5ml miniature from my local perfume shop. I am beyond ecstatic.

very nice and unique, but for me it doesn't worth the price. bottle and package very well done.

بوی بسیار خاص و جالبی داره ، ولی در اون حدی جذاب نیست که بخوام مبلغی حدود یک میلیون پاش بدم. شیشه و بسته بندیش خیلی خوشگله.

frag-overdose

I tried this when it first came out in 2011, and to my nose it reminds me more or less like Burberry London which I had, therefore I gave this a pass even though I like the bottle design.

Recently, while looking for new perfumes, I found this fragrance online, sold at MYR90 (approx USD20) and it was an instant buy. Anyway, I have smelled this before even for a brief moment, I knew I will like it.

The black pepper and juniper in the opening gives this its bright, uplifting opening that I really enjoy despite of its short life. Then the lavender and beeswax start to take over giving the fragrance its sweet aromatic vibe, resting on a bed of woody and benzoin blend.

Overall, this is a wonderful fragrance I would say, I find the composition is incredibly smooth and well balanced. Knowing that this is no longer in production, I will surely cherish the one and only bottle that I have now.

brandonR

A subpar scent going for ridiculous prices on eBay do to it's discontinued status. I'd rather take the money and buy a Chanel.

Djedi

Nice spicy and lightly sweet scent. You get an accord reminiscent of honey but is in fact the beeswax. The composition also smells rather balsamic, and after a few minutes there is a strange, almost plasticky smell lurking in the background. It doesn't smell bad or vile or anything of that nature, but it could be one of the aromachemicals which perhaps isn't of the best quality.

However I do think using beeswax turned out to be a great choice for this release. For some reason for me this becomes an immidiate skin scent unfortunately and doesn't last more than a few hours. But the overall execution is well done and it's too bad they discontinued it.

So good to reunite with Lanvin AVANT GARDE again !!
Such a warm and sensual scent !
Perfect for the cold weather

wasimansha

@arhamtausif where in pakistan you got it for $25?

arhamtausif

Came across this at a departmental store here in Pakistan for $25, which is an absolute steal. Had to get it and add it to my collection since I love tobacco and amber based sweet scents. And wow. It smells so sweet, syrupy and pleasant.

Starts off a bith spicy and fresh but the beeswax note quickly takes over and then tobacco and amber come into play during the dry down. This is perfect for the fall and winter. Can be worn for any occassion and at any time of the day since it's so versatile.

A great date night scent too. Lucky I found it since I've always wanted to get my hands on it. Also, the bottle is really something else. One of my favorites.

fromthebayandaroundtheway

Lanvin's Avant Garde is a real gem of a fragrance. I am glad I discovered this when I did because it is a real joy to wear, especially in a colder climate. Avant Garde is a simple fragrance that is rich and pleases anyone who is a fan of tobacco based fragrances.

Right out the sprayer Avant Garde stays true to its genre; Oriental woody. The benzoin, beeswax and tobacco play very nicely together. The opening is rich, sweet with just a hint of the spices laden in this composition. The beeswax isn't to be overlooked here, it plays an integral role in reigning in the sweetness of the tobacco. The lavender, cardamom and amber blend in nicely after the opening settles down and the essence of the tobacco continues to project. It is here where that initial sweetness gives way to a dry spiciness. The vetiver and pepper give a little earthiness to this scent to settle it into it's dry down.I get 4 hours from this fragrance and it hugs fairly close to the skin.

When to wear Avant Garde? In the fall and winter of course. Spring nights also work well for this fragrance. This can be worn in or out of the office. It is inoffensive and In my opinion a safe solid scent. Give Avant Garde a few sprays when It is mid November and the upcoming holidays and gatherings are on your mind.

Freedomlover

This is a stunningly beautiful sweet warming honey fragrance.... I wish I had bought now bottles years ago as amazon were selling for a really good price... Luckily I bought 3 bottles which should last me many more years.... I've learned always but 3 extra bottles if your find a fragrance you love as it could get discontinued or reformulated....

olfactoryfan

Nothing but love for this Lanvin creation. And now that it's discontinued and expensive to get your hands on, I wear it conservatively.

But there's another reason I only wear it once every so often. The stunning bottle has a leak around its narrow neck where the spray nozzle's attached. So every time I use it, a little bit escapes.

It's like the so-called 'angels' share' that whisky makers have to contend with - when some of the precious contents of their whisky barrels evaporates over time.

pierreelkhoury

Lanvin avant garde
Bought a 50 ml for 30$
Very nice spicy semi sweet and warm fragrance with good longevity, nothing to do with la nuit de l’homme or ck shock, not In any aspect.
This is better than both of these frags.

lenon

I bought a decant of this fragrance. At first I liked, but after some days I started to feel headache when used it. Not worth for me...

dorchild

Can't wait for colder weather to wear it again.

this is a very SENSUAL fragrance. Warm and classy.

Leopold

I could never care about fragrances like La nuit de l’homme or Nuit d’Issey. They all smell the same to me. However, Avant Garde went unnoticed to me for years until it was on the verge of being discontinued. I tried it and there is something more about it. Probably it’s the beeswax note that makes me like it so much. I get a little bit of tobacco and honey as well. Definitely not a signature fragrance but interesting for the winter. It’s not loud or vulgar. It’s contemporary but not boring. Performance is quite good. Needless to say, I found three 50ml bottles in a department store for a good price and that will be it. Buy it at a reasonable price if you can but not worth huge prices..

TrephineArtist

First impressions; Elegant honey & lightly spiced fragrance. It reminds me of something that I can't quite place yet. Maybe a little like Lalique Faune, similar ballpark anyway. It's as sleek and refined as the bottle. Thumbs up from moi.

Spigcore

Wonderful fresh spicy fragrance with pepper and bergamot from the get go, but the star of the show is that soft tobacco note. Imagine the tobacco note in Versace The Dreamer (the best bit of an average-good fragrance) but higher quality and more rounded. Is it worth the crazy prices? No. But I found a 30ml at TK Maxx for £16.99 at the end of 2018, so it is out there to be found.

damebrunette

I think this is my favourite perfume bottle ever. It's so classy - the shape and the colours. Very elegant.

brianfamous88

I found a store that have 2 bottles .I bought 1 bottle for 45 usd

GodKing

I love this stuff! I picked-up a bottle in 2014 as part of my Spring Cheapie Fling and consider it to be one of my best sub-$30 purchases ever. Sadly, Avant Garde has been discontinued and, as much as I love it, I do not feel it is worth the exorbitant prices being demanded by the eBay Fragrance Flunkies.

To me, Avante Garde is tonka bean, orange, cedar, lavender and bergamot, with a lightly-sweet tobacco beginning to push forward ten or so minutes after the opening. In some ways it reminds me of Mandarina Duck Pure Black during the opening, and I was surprised to see no orange/tangerine listed in the notes composition and bergamot was rated so low.

As this fragrance progresses, the sweet tobacco note pushes forward and becomes sweeter and more prominent+. Although I don't agree, it's at this point where I can understand how some folks make the comparisons to CK One Shock. To me, Avant Garde feels like one-quarter CK One Shock, one-quarter Mandarina Duck and one-half YSL La Nuit. Yes, to me it smells a lot like La Nuit. Okay, do I love this stuff more than La Nuit, CK One Shock or Pure Black? Not necessarily, but it is a terrific morph that has elements of all three.

Performance is just okay (about average) in that it will exude a nice personal scent trail for the first hour or two before moving closer to the skin, and it lasts around 6-hours on my skin. Overall, I was expecting this honey-thick scent to perform a bit better on my skin.

Gonga

Very pleasant sweet fragrance, but little bit generic for me. Unfortunatelly I can´t smell beeswax, such a pitty. Superb bottle, very attracting.

AMajeedQT

Apparently, this was very similar to YSL La Nuit de L`Homme with mild changes that distinguished it. However, it has been discontinued.

I smelled it back in the day & while it was a lovely smell, it was not something new nor ground-breaking.

What a shame.

miles178

just wanted to buy it (after 3 years) ... and it´s not available and prices go up almost 8x more for this thing
it´s discontinued... what a big pity !!!!

what are the marketing strategies like? (to get rid of all the good things for a nice price, probably yes)

Makkii

This one is so dark and deep
The essence of it is so rich and beautiful the longevity is very good but the sillage is not good you can't smell it from a distance
You need to get closer

landshark321

Lanvin Avant Garde is an agreeable sweet/spicy/pwodery/woody men's fragrance, very much in the spirit of the half decade of fragrances that preceded it. I'm thinking of YSL La Nuit de L'Homme, Burberry London for Men, and Mugler A*Men Pure Havane. Like these, it's an agreeable men's choice for nights, but also days, particularly in cooler weather.

Tobacco is Avant Garde's featured note, rendered spicier by additions of pepper and cardamom, given a hint of freshness via lavender, and sweetness by resins, and woodiness by, well, woods.

It's reasonably safe enough of an offering for those who fancy sweet tobacco scents, as the powderiness of it is limited enough, not really quite in the YSL L'Homme or Dior Homme category, very much remaining somewhat of a darker sweet/spicy combo.

Performance is quite solid, but, as it's been discontinued, I suspect the Lanvin Avant Garde, being available primarily through eBay and other sellers, is dramatically overpriced. Pure Havane is a better choice by far, and I suspect many others would be satisfied similarly by a recent formulation of LNDLH or London, for that matter.

A nice fragrance, a like but not a love, and really a statement, but as agreeable and reliable as most men's nighttime options that are viable for 6+ months of the year.

WildHusky

Its 40$ in the middle east tho not sure if its good.

Tazahr

Nice fragrance with average performance.

If you didnt find it below 30$ discounted, just Get CK shock. To me it is the same scent more or less with similar performance.

Nyrahe

Please, Lanvin, bring it back...

Stepper

This fragrance is so special to me because it smells so seductive.

Personally, I prefer this fragrance for dates especially on a winter night and when I plan on cuddling with my girl. The beeswax and sweet tobacco is the dominant notes on this scent and adds to a very classy scent.

If you are lucky to get your hands on this fragrance, grab it. I will be getting myself a back up bottle

Shahram.yari

This an amazing fragrance.
It doesn't the same as La Nuit Del'homme or Ck Shock.slitely resemblance with La Nuit bat not same.

Avant Garde has it's own character beewax doesn't exit in any other mentioned above perfumes and in dry down its completely different .

Avant Garde is an fascinating sweet honey tobbaco scent in its own way which no other scent's could achieve.
Really a masterpiece in it's own genre.

Nyrahe

I just bought 2x50ml and 2x30ml for my boyfriend (for a slightly higher price than normal). I literally called to every perfume shop in our country to find out if they have some of this gem and they had! SO I bought the last bottles, I´m broke but happy AF.

This, I guess, says a lot about my relationship to this men´s fragrance. I LOVE it so MUCH. I always have this "meh" feeling when it comes to men´s colognes becouse all of them smells to me kind of like a generic male shower gel. To my nose they are just all the same (sorry). But this one is something totally different. Maybe I am a close-minded but I don´t believe I could EVER discover better or at least same as good men´s scent as this cheap (used to be..) beauty. It´s such a shame that it´s been discontinued becouse I haven´t even a real chance to fully enjoy it yet. Anyway, to me (woman point of view) 10/10 definitely!

P.S.: Some of you complain about the longevity and sillage but I think they are actually pretty good on my man. Maybe just try more spritzs :)

dorchild

Absolutely beautiful !

Shugenja

Truly a beautiful gem.
The beeswax and tobacco/benzoin just warmed the spirit and the lavender was almost minty in its shimmery effect with the sillage.
It has been a past signature scent for me. I did lose out and not realize it was discontinued. I would have bought a lifetime supply. Now I will disappoint the women in my life and only use it for special evenings and events in cold weather. About 85ml have to last forever.
I was very lucky to buy Avant Garde very early in my appreciation of scents.
A lost masterpiece at any price. If you find a bottle in the wild at your pricepoint buy it or regret it.

Think tom ford tobacco vanille or tabac rouge and you'll have a very good idea about this beauty I'm still kicking myself for not buying more bottles a few years ago i bought two 100ml bottles for ridiculous low price. It's hard to get hold of now. Stunningly beautiful fragrance.

Fraggie2100

Because Its discontinued. I regret not buying last year I saw at cheap price. could have sold an unopened box for this for 350$. Regarding the smell , too sweet ! but I like gourmand smells and honey !

smellsbells

omg $125-200.00 a bottle..LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL.What a joke
Even $50 is wayyyyyyyy too high.
I know its discontinued but hec i remember seeing this at tj maxx every week for like 16.99-24.99 years ago. I tried it once there from an open box and thought it was sweet but liked michael jordan legend alot better for even less $$$.

Mitchsmellsreallygood

Avant Garde is absolutely beautiful. It is fresh, sexy, a little spicy, and sweet. It is one of the few fragrances I've tried that instantly WOWED me. It is similar in vibe to La Nuit by YSL, but it is definitely a different scent trying to convey a different sensation. And it is sensational. Women will love it, and the performance is pretty good.
This is a beautiful fragrance and I am very glad I got it for $60. I would have paid more. The only ones consistently available now are on eBay and they run around $150. Smh. However, this does feel like a $150 scent. It does not feel cheap, at all! I'll be rocking this for as long as I can make 100 ml last.

carlosalbertoandradecruz

Similar to La Nuit de L'Homme?
Noooo! With the last reformulation of LNDLH this Lanvin Avangarde is a lot better... But where can I buy it?

aaron_luke_e

Oh boy oh boy is this fragrance gorgeous. To start things off, I initially thought this smelled like La Nuit De Lhomme from Ysl, but, that was the first time I had ever sprayed it. This is probably the best Beeswax fragrance on the market. Has this slight seductive nature to it and last a good time. What I get from this fragrance is a gorgeous beeswax, cardamon, benzoin and tobacco combo. Last 5-6 hours and projects ok for an hour. But, this is a rather small bottle and could be easily brought out on the day for reapplication. I think most people would appreciate this bad boy. Think of this as a more masculine La Nuit De Lhomme with an added sweetened tobacco note. Smell it, my friends.

everett49354

Looks like this one is discontinued - a shame as it really is good. Good thing I have a decent amount of it, as prices are skyrocketing.

Still one of my favorite scents, very comforting and easy to wear.

olfactoryfan

There are a few fragrances I would buy just for their brilliant bottles alone. Dunhill Icon is one, Avant Garde is another.

In the case of Dunhill's Icon in the amazing original silver flacon, for me the juice inside does not further justify the purchase. But what a stunning presentation.

And then there's Lanvin's creation, Avant Garde. I think the bottle design is sublime and it's totally unique. It's a thing of sensual beauty - like a stone that's been worn smooth over time in a fast-flowing river.

As luck would have it, the contents within make the purchase worth every cent. Because Avant Garde is a beautiful honey-coated tobacco and lavender gem.

Hastey

Tobacco is my favourite note, and I blind bought this just based on that fact. I’m glad that I did. For the price I love it! The combination of honey and tobacco is brilliant. Add to this lavender, cardamom with an amber base.

I love this, I really do. It was hard getting my hands on it though, I’m thinking it might be discontinued? If so a damn shame.

Stnik

Blind buy. Nice. Understated and classy. Reminds me of being in a nice hotel with wood paneling with a sophisticated crowd. Not that I have experience of those things. Though I have been in a hotel.

Could wear this any cold day in any environment. Smells like Ahlam Al Arab by Ard Al Zaafaran, but is deeper and smoother.

Eau de Nikita

Ope! Here we go! I think the fragrance industry is catching on and raising the price as it's getting harder to find. So better get it now if u can find it cheap under $30 for the 100mL! I feel like this would be discontinued it's that good! I'm not a fan of overwhelming heavy colognes but this does not offend and is not cloying like most in it's category. It's very appealing! I say it's a safe blind buy if you are looking for a smokey tobacco fragrance that is not sickly like LeMale Joop Armani Code but still want that same winter time cologne vibe. This is classy!

GeoffOx

Blind bought this one. At first I was worried by the "sweet" description. Sweet scents often put me off, as I'm not a fan of the cloying tonka bombs or candied clubbing scents. Luckily Avant Garde gets it right, confidently combining sweetness with maturity.

The note breakdown above is on point. It's somewhat powdery, with lots of amber, tobacco, pink pepper, vanilla, and gentle florals and spices behind the honeyed beeswax. The beeswax is natural, mellow, and rich, and it's what gives the juice its unique profile.

This definitely could fit comfortably within a "niche" collection. But don't worry, it's nothing too obscure. It's a gentlemanly, warm, calming, mass-appealing fragrance. Great for dates or semi-formal evenings out.

Performance is ok, but not outstanding. Definitely could last longer. But for the price this is an absolute bargain. Not as close to La Nuit as some clone hunters may be hoping for, but it's damn good in its own right. A unique and overlooked gem. Highly recommended.

xJoe

Blind bought this one based on good reviews here. I just used it 2 times and sold it further. It has strong, heavy medicinal vibe, which combined with strong beeswax note makes this perfume unbearable for me. I would say it is definitely not for younger crowd. I don´t see this similar to YSL La Nuit de´l Homme in any way. OK some notes maybe, but overall impression is completely different for me. I love La Nuit and dislike this one. On the other hand - very nice performance and good price!

Freedomlover

Beautiful sweet mellow beeswax vanilla amber vibes to this juice feels like a niche fragrance. I bought a bottle from Amazon a few years ago a large one at a very good price wish i had bought more. It's a really beautiful blended fragrance.in my opinion very unique. And way better than the YSL it's supposed to resemble avant garde is way superior for me.

redcomet1

I am surprised some people reminded with La Nuit de L'homme.I do not feel any similarity IMHO. I feel like a
mix between Pure havanne and Valentino Uomo intense.

I blind bought it for very low price, and love it a lot. Very masculine bee wax, tobacco and benzoin. More masculine than Pure havanne, which I had a plan to buy. (I have Pure Malt already which I love a little more than Pure havanne). The only negative to my nose is the dry down to bee wax dominant + hint of tobacco. Other notes are hardly notice when dry down.

I was recently at Next, the clothing place. I tried a scent there called "Next Signature Summer", I immediately knew the scent right away but the "Summer" name confused me, however after some thinking I realised that that fragrance is a very very good copy of this, for £15 for 100ml.

I recommend getting that for an even better price than what Avant Garde is. They also have Aventus and Sauvage copies for a similar price called "Marble" and "Stone"

lespritz.1

Nice a sugary; like a long-lasting o' the YSL(yes, another person saying it). Definitely ish w/o question. A great scent, esp. for winter

Lockon

I hopped into my Uber, heading to the Lirr.
And the driver asked me what i was wearing.
"Um, clothes..." No, what perfume are you wearing?
"Oh, Avant Garde" Spell that.."Sure"
I'll buy that for myself, are you going to a party?
"No, heading to work"
It reminds me of A*Men Mugler.
"I guess because, maybe because of the Beeswax & Benzoin."
"Wait, why did you ask if i was going to a party?"
Because you smell nice."Thanks"
Co-workers Said they liked the scent as well.
And then the custodian ask me the same question as well.

I like it thus far..
Caught off guard by the Uber driver.
But i might add this in to my weekly rotation of scents.
I get the Angel man ref, but this stands out on it's own.
This was a instant like, but it's nothing ground breaking.
At least to me, someone else might find it earth shattering for all we know.
I need to order more travel atomizers.
So i can reapply this later on in the day.
But other people could still smell it passed the six hour mark and a gust wind hit us.
The sweetest of this thing doesn't go away, which i love.
Gourmand frags for the win(GF2TW)!

I notice there's a reformulation, in a new bottle.
Brownish color bottle...Did anyone try it?
And if yes...is it better or worst?

I used nine sprays...both wrist, behind my ears, back & front of my neck, chest, front and back of my shirt.
Will I buy this again?...Yes!

Mmm, like that Yves Saint Laurent Le Nuit stuff, if it cost cheaper and lasted longer! Ya, this costs less and smells of higher quality(and 95% like YSL) so buy it!

MrHonest

Well.............I finally caved.

Let the record show that my opinion of this fragrance has OFFICIALLY changed. And here's why:

In my review below (Jan 2017), I remarked how I blind bought Avant Garde and was originally disappointed with the scent due to its overbearing sweetness and all-too fleeting resemblance to LNDL. I therefore hastily handed the bottle off to my father, never to hear from it again. Or so I thought...

You see, from that moment on, nearly every time I saw my parents, my dad was wearing a "healthy" dose of Avant Garde, and it just smelled fantastic. Creamy tobacco, sweet, powdery vanilla and a touch of deep honey. Over and over it kept taunting me, and I was quickly regretting my impulsive decision to purge my mind of what I considered to be a poor buying decision. But WAS it???

A few days ago, I saw my father again, and sure enough, that sweet aroma met my nose the instant I got within firing range. BAM! No, it wasn't LNDL, but I didn't care. And frankly, I couldn't take it anymore. I knew what I had to do. That evening, I went online and scooped up another bottle before going to bed.

Finally. I was able to sleep soundly, dreaming of suits and ties, cool weather, business events and vanilla Rice Krispies.

So what's the moral of the story? Whenever you invest in a product, person or idea, learn to set your initial impressions aside - give them a chance to grow on you - or you may just end up regretting it. You know, I thought I had learned this lesson with A*Men, but I guess I was wrong. I sure as hell won't be making THAT mistake again.

Scent - 8.5/10
Longevity - 6.5/10 - fixed with a travel spray
Projection - 6.5/10
Overall - 7.5/10 - 5 months later...I love it.

OmarAladdin

No! It does not smell any thing close to La Nuit De L'Homme
And it's mind blowing how much I absolutely love it, beeswax along with tobacco creating a heavenly olfactory satisfation.

Kountrytx

8/10.

Iki Rizki

Yes, it's nice fragrance. When you spray it will remain you of La nuit.
But more sweet and warm and also sexy.
The longevity and projection also good for me.
You will get the hint after 6 hour apply.
8/10 worth to try.

everett49354

This fragrance definitely has a similar vibe to la nuit with the cardamom opening, but during the drydown this fragrance turns into a very pleasant tobacco beeswax combination. I can definitely smell the lavender and the benzoin gives it a smooth creaminess that could be mistaken for vanilla. I love this one, but performance is not great. Projection is pretty soft and longevity is decent on skin - however, on clothes it will las for days. I sprayed a dress shirt and it still smells quite strongly 5 days later. Definitely a good date fragrance, one for cuddling or simply to smell yourself. It's sweet, but not excessively sweet to the point where it gets cloying. The tobacco adds a masculine touch which makes the scent more appealing and alluring. Overall, a good value for the price of you don't mind reapplying and with the soft projection

MrHonest

Wow. I was on the fence for a VERY long time with this one (since Feb 2016), trying to decide whether or not it would be too sweet for me.

To give you some reference, on my skin CK One Shock is a big Christmas-y no no, Rochas Man makes me dizzy and Mugler's Pure Tonka is just pure overkill.

So when I saw beeswax, amber, benzoin, nutmeg and all those sweet spicy notes, I was a little apprehensive, despite the overwhelmingly positive reviews. According to everything I could find online, I was expecting a subtle, sweet spicy scent REMINISCENT of LNDL, with perhaps a soft vanillic touch - but overall, a modern and attractive composition.

So after pulling the trigger on the B-B gun (blind-buy), and wearing this for 3 days, I can tell you that that's a perfectly fair description.

Right from the first spray, I was like, "WHOA! La Nuit de L'homme! NICE!" To me, the similarity is ridiculously OBVIOUS. But I'll keep this brief. I won't BS you guys - when Avant Garde settles down, it's basically 50% LNDL, and 50% some weird dense, powdery, sour/sweet concoction that's definitely not beeswax.

Like literally, I'm smelling a damn beeswax candle right now as I'm writing this and that's not what's in this fragrance. And whatever it REALLY is, it kindof ruins it for me. Nonetheless, I WILL SAY that the final drydown is a gentle, but well blended vanilla. Nothin' but.

So is it subtle, sweet and spicy? Yes.
Is it SIMILAR to LNDL? Indeed. More synthetic though.
Is it too sweet for me? Not really. Glad about that.
Modern? Boy howdy!
But definitely not as attractive as I was hoping. Boo hoo. I'll stick with my YSL thank you very much.

Longevity is OK; projection is terrible, but at least they got 50% of the scent right. And yeah, CLEARLY not a summer scent IMO. Ages 25+??

Overall - 6.5 / 10 - Still, if you want a cheaper alternative to La Nuit de L'homme, this is the best I've smelled so far.

Oh well. I guess you can't win 'em all...

vicealtom

I really like this one more than YSL la nuit de l'homme, maybe cause it's has more projection than reformulated bottles?

Safe blind buy if you're into sweet scent

8/10

Seattle Dweller

Superior to YSL Nuit?........ no imo, just different. But I definitely don't think they smell the same apart from the cardamon.

There is no beeswax in the YSL and the tobacco in Avant Garde is very pronounced.

Not sure why people think (3 votes as I type this) those 2 smell the same. I have zero friends that think they smell the same and none of their friends think they smell the same either - thats HUNDREDS of people that think they are clearly different.

Both great, both different.

Cheers.

Chris3Hs

@Llloyd
This is not the same as La nuit de l'homme. LNDL is blended into an androgynous, smooth fragrance with a bit of detectable cardamom. Avante garde on the other hand, though it also has a similar smoothness to LNDL, Avante Garde makes use of beeswax and tobacco as the main notes. This makes the scent unique and superior (in my opinion) since there is more facets that you can distinguish in Avante garde. Especially considering the price difference, Avant garde is far superior in every way for me.
Hope this helps.

llloyd

does it really resemble nuit de l homme? i wanted to purchase it online but no sample anywhere to be found.
anyways, if this has that pop soda sweety sourness like lndh does, i'd really be disappointed. yes, no?

ruskinpolanco

So Sexy and sophisticated fragrance it really smell close to YSL LNDH... The Honey Note and Cardamon Are Aaaamazing i wish it could project more and last longer.

RICH4

If anyone is willing to trade this, please let me know and pm me. I have a few bottles that i'd be willing to trade for this.

phlegyas

The tobacco smell is very sexy. It sweetens up so it doesn't smell like you smoked a pack of cigarettes. My girlfriend loves this one, her initial reaction was "that's hot". I get about 4.5 hours of longevity and the silage is not overpowering. It's just right for someone who's close enough to you to catch a whiff. Definitely one of my new favorites.

kelvin tan

Blind bought this and really surprise on the opening.Definitely I get beeswax, honey with tobacco in it.it similar to those bodyshop or locitane body cream type but i love it.however i still get more lavender on the drydown until it the end of the day.Longevity and projection are no problem for my skin and people will notice u with this fragrance.Anyway it is a thumbs up for this awesome juice

diego.lesgart

A nice fragance specially for fall or winter ... spicy and beewax, with nouths ... As a Bailys licquor ... balsamic, tonic, but not watery ... resinous obviouly!

Chris3Hs

I read reviews on this stuff a while ago, and was interested to try it. Normally I hate the cheapies that people suggest because they just aren't the same as what people compare them to. So I was at Winners and saw this at the clearance section, so I decided to pick it up just as a what the heck. After spraying this stuff on, it reminds me a lot of Ideal by Guerlain because it has a cherry sweetness to it. After a while, it dries down to lose that cherry/ sharp sweetness, while keeping a nice tobacco scent. Overall, I am very impressed with this stuff for the price, I wouldn't be surprised at all if this was an offering by Serge Lutens, that is how nice this tobacco and beeswax combination is.

phpboy

Avant Garde by lanvin is a masterpiece. For the first time I got sprays on my wrist, Avant Garde surprisingly smells wonderful. It has smells of the sweetness of cream and honey, tobacco note which all make Avant garde unique, warm, charming and obviously masculine.
Remember the fact that Avant Garde projects average and stays well 2 hours on the skin, after that it is still there for long. for instance, i got 4 sprays for a night out, my female friends complimented me how nice the frag was. The shirt I was wearing still has a slight smell days after. I am really happy and surprised about it.
Avant Garde is highly recommended. Love it so much from Vietnam.

Eau de Nikita

Honey tobacco opening as if someone put out a Virginia Slim's in one of those ashtrays that use to be at the mall in the 1980's. after that there is a dolce& gabanna moment then a Usher VIP or spark seduction moment. I especially enjoy the light Claiborne spark seduction moment at the end is what makes it sexy with the spices. Well composed stages and notes.

California 00

Sprays on like a honey infused chocolate. This scent has me feeling like Winnie the Pooh.

Is it comparable to La Nuit? Yeah, a little bit. Is it a good substitute? I guess so. It's much sweeter. La Nuit is much sexier, much wiser. Avant Garde isn't as refined. Reminds me of Al-Rehab's Soft-- at least the caramel/honey notes.

Good winter scent. Gourmand.

4/5

Update:
So I picked up a bottle of CK Shock and these two are very similar (more so than YSL). AG is sweeter than both Shock and La Nuit. AG is more honey, Shock is more Cherry, and YSL's is just a bit more complex with less of the linear sweet note. YSL above them all but all three seem to have fallen from the same family tree.

assim.hayderi

I have had this one in my collection for more than 2 years and I have never appreciated it the way I should have done. This is one of the most pleasant cheapies, sweet gourmand and not synthetic at all. Perfect for the colder weather. I would say I like it more than many of those expansive niche perfumes I have got. It really is that good. Definitely a safe blind-buy. For that price, you can never go wrong.

Scent: 9/10
Longevity: 7/10
Projection: 7/10

Pedro14

A honeyed "La Nuit de l`Homme" less spicy.

Nisay

The Parfum is very Powerful, it has very special combinations the Beewax, Tobacco it`s smells Sweet and strong i like it. Fragrance Note 7.5/ 10 I think this Fragrances has a uniqueness.

Ignas39

This is a very nice fragrance. Smells so gourmand to me, that beeswax makes it smell like a honey bun. Beautiful scent for a very affordable price, definitely worth checking out.

RICH4

Very similar to La Nuit, however as La Nuit is more spicy, Avant Garde is more sweet with the honey. Would love to acquire another bottle via trade. If your in the US and interested in swapping, please let me know.

joenick68

I have owned this for at least two year and today is probably the 3rd time I am wearing it, and after all this time I think this is one of the colognes that has honey that I can smell it right away during the opening in a very pleasant masculine way mixed with the other notes. After the two hours a very masculine scent starts to settle on the skin with the lavender and vetiver and the tobacco as well. I thin is a very nice mix, probably needed more sillage, but I liked it since the very first time I smelled it.
It stay in my "likes",

noelmarchaynes

THe honey became sickly very quickly for me.
Sillage very poor as well.
While a nice smell, i cannot recommend it for the reason above

HauteCuban

This was a MAJOR disappointment. I agree with @querelle, this is, "DULL and Voiceless" and in my opinion a waste of money too! I have toilet paper that smells better and has better longevity than this. It called "Angel Soft Fresh Lavender Scent"

Art Is

Smells sweet but very poor holding power.

pierre.v

I originaly bought this, because so many people said it had straight up similarities to La Nuit De L'homme.

Then I actually got La Nuit and found it to be surprisingly similar, thanks to the prominent Cardamom note found in both. However, the note found in La Nuit is softer and creamier than the one in Avant Garde. Its really beautifully smooth in the YSL version.

Avant Gard is very good, but it is not quite as refined as La Nuit de L'homme. Performance, however are about the same. If your budget is tight, or like me, you are devastated at the current performance of La Nuit, then this is a worthy substitute.

sproaty

Very nice. This does a strange thing upon application where it's noticeable for a couple of minutes then dies down for 5-10 minutes before coming back. Tobacco and beeswax mixes really well - it makes me think of Back to Black by Kilian (I own a clone of it which smells incredible). This is definitely along those lines to my nose.

Scent: 9/10
Projection:
Longevity: 5-6hrs

JAYMZDEEN

Heaven ... The scent is pure heaven!!! Im a little disappointed in the performance... Longevity mostly. But the smell of this will put you in a good place! There are really good colognes out there. This is on another level.

Paulo Rocha

This one smells so good! I'm not , right now. in the best of mind equilibrium. A rough night! Anyway, I can go to bed and take a sniff at my wrists and say: "Life is good!" I"ll make another critical review. Avant Garde deserves it!

rushrocker

Wow, this absolutely smells like La Nuit De L'homme... but with gentle honeycomb and tobacco notes in it. This is seriously good smelling stuff.

I also occasionally get that redbull/tobacco sweetness scent that is found in Ck One Shock.

So in conclusion, this ends up being a very enjoyable frankenstein between La Nuit De L'homme and CK One Shock. Considering the price, I think this is a good buy.

BLIND BUY.
Generic smelling . Cheap. Zero longevity.
No reason to buy this at all.
Smells like a Body Spray from the dollar store.
Sorry.

shavenonthedarkside

Definitely a blind buy at the price point. Review does need to be long. Amber, honeycomb, lavender. Those notes contain the tobacco note not to be cloying or a 1 million cologne scent. It does not have "the player" cologne vibe. It is not the strongest, but a few extra sprays takes care of that. A couple sprays on you, and a couple spray on you clothes an hour before leaving out --- 5/6 hours of longevity without offending anyone.

akseljgtvik

smells like weed

sarabx5

Cheap and "Chic".

Smooth and not agressive scent. It's more YSL than CK. For fall/spring and cold nights use.

Moderate projection and longivity (5/6 hours on my skin).

7/10 in all

lemac

bought because of the reviews on here and online what a mistake. unless you like smelling like burnt rubber not for me .

mapache

Finally took the plunge and bought this fragrance.
Yes...it is similar to YSL L'Nuit, and CK SHOCK.
I find this is smoother than Shock...but richer, somehow, than YSL L'Nuit. Of the 3, I am more drawn to Shock. Shock is, to my nose, somewhat "greener" or even herbally than the other 2. I will use Avant Garde at times when Shock is to edgy for me. I find sometimes that I have to be "in the mood" for certain scents, and Shock is one of them, Avant Garde, smoothes thing out in that respect. Remember...Spend time with your fragrances and get to know them, and let them get to know YOU.

mike2342

Another amazing scent for a decent price.i never knew bees wax smelled so good mixed with tobacco. For the price this is definetly worth a blind buy. 10/10. For the bees wax alone

TheBawssThomas

not joking when i say you will attract bees, this is a bee magnet in the summer...but i wear it in the winter and fall which is perfect time to wear this..very good longevity-7-8 hours...sillage is not bad and projection is good for arms length for about the first 1-1/2 hours..smells nice..good for the money

Cauda Pavonis

Sharp, green opening over a sweet woody base. After a few minutes when the top burns off can smell the cardamom and a cedar note (although there's none listed). Spicy with a touch of incense-like sharpness. The tobacco is a just faint soapy fuzziness in the background - I was hoping for more tobacco but this is still a lovely fragrance. Comfortable and huggable.

@Erui, welcome to the club:D

adityarahmannn90

Reminds me of a candy from Yupi Jelly Gum hehe

Projection: it's not project on my skin
Longevity: just about 3 hours

Erui

When I first tried this edt, my heart skipped a beat, I love it so much... deep, warm, sweet, creamy and spicy at the same time, with great longevity. This is the one for me.
(And yes, I'm a female... but an androgynous one)

wh1msydevIant

I'm torn about this fragrance. Everytime I spray it on me, it's a different experience. When I use this I either smell like someone poured cigarette ash unto me, other times I smell like I'm soaked in this lovely powdery honey tobacco scent

Update:
Holy smokes! I've had this for 5 years now and this gem aged like fine wine. It's a 9/10 scent but this gets signature status because of the feeling it evokes in me. This makes me feel so confident and assured. It's like I can conquer anything I set my eyes on. What an experience

Update 2:
Dethroned by MFK Gentle Fluidity Silver as my signature. Lanvin is still amazing but MFK GFS is just insanely good. I feel I've found my holy grail in that fragrance. There's just something about that scent profile does it for me. It's as if my nose was innately made to like it. I am so predisposed to liking it that I considered giving it 11/10 which would cement it as my holy grail. But perhaps I am being too hasty and I am still early in my fragrance journey

RobbieX

Just to add.....Avant Garde is like a refined version of CK One Shock. It's got a sort of pleasant boozy background note too. This really is a lovely men's scent.

Seattle Dweller

CK Shock vs Lanvin Avant Garde

I love both and I am running low on both but want to only buy one and save my cashola for an Amouage fragrance - so I did a direct head to head shootout this week.

In case anyone is one the fence between these 2 - here are the differences I notice. I wore each at the same time - one on each arm - for 5 days. 2 sprays each per arm.

Cold rainy climate so take that into consideration.

Longevity = CK Shock (25% longer)*
Projection = CK Shock (2 feet more)
College Girls = Lanvin Avant Garde (about 27 to 3)

Responses from girls were overwhelming in favor of this fragrance. Words like, warm, sexy, spicy smooth, were used by them to describe Avant Garde.

CK was the slightly louder fruitier version. No beeswax and less spice. Girls commented that it smelled like a dried red bull energy drink mixed with tabacoo.

Both are great fragrances.

* tip: I tested both CK shock and Lanvin Avant Garde on a cotton shirt to see what would happen. CK shocks fruitiness didn't stick and it didn't last much longer than skin. But the beeswax in Avant Garde and some of the spice and light tabacoo dry down hung on a long time!

On a shirt Lanvin Avant Garde actually outlasted CK shock. If anyone owns Lanvin Avant Garde and wants it to last longer - spray plentiful on the skin and shirt. Sillage is low and the fragrance is cheap so layer it on.

Bottom line. Believe the hype. Lanvin Avant Garde is still an amazing fragrance.

Avalanche@arion

Avant Garde - a must have for every gourmand lover
Its all blended masterfully. The opening is great.
The most prominent note you get from the get go is bees wax.It remains and becomes dominant at drydown. The tobacco note is there - you can feel it,but not ''in your face'' type of a way.
Projection-about an arms length for 2-3 hours
Longetivity-7 hours+
Scent - 7/10

NiceNiffs

So many comparisons to YSL La Nuit de L'homme and I have to agree whole heartedly with those that say it is not the same or even similar. For me the two are mutually exclusive, standalone scents in their own right and very pleasant, well blended ones at that. AG is definitely a quieter scent but I reckon this is intentional because the strong, sweet Beeswax with the Tobacco and Amber could easily become cloying if the concentration were much higher. AG is more interesting than YSL La Nuit in that the fragrance does go through more developments and nuances. The Tobacco becomes a little more prominent after 1-2 hours and after 3 hours or so I also detect something like fresh mint (I think?). Very nice indeed. I have been wearing this for a few days now and yes bigger projection would be good but you can smell it throughout the day and those around you smell it more than you so the desired effect can be achieved. I really like this and will be keeping a place for it in my list of favourites.

maximus.meridius

If I really like this scent, what other one should I get?

Raccoonius

Many consider this to be the poor man's La Nuit de Lhomme. At this moment, the start of 2016, Avant Garde is denser than the current reformulation of La Nuit de Lhomme. But comparing it to YSL's past masterpiece is unjust. Avant Garde resembles the cardamon bomb, but introduces an original and interesting note. Namely the note of beeswax is memorable. At first you may think it is a rubber note, but eventually you realize it is the alluring beeswax. The scent is gorgeous, but disappointing is the performance. It is decent, lasting between 4-6 hours. Projection is great for the first 30 min, but beyond 2 hours is analogous to searching for the fountain of youth. If only the performance would be better, this would be my signature. Great scent for the seductive and those looking for a change. Just be prepared to bring travel atomizers.

miles178

my fave scent ... very charming, suited for well dressed gentlemen

lamine.belaouane

I didn't liked the sent un thé begining but after a moment it turns to very plaiant sent

I_Like_Sand

I think that this is a really fantastic fragrance!
The honey/beeswax note is natural smelling, sweet and just wonderful. It reminds me very much of those honey hard candies with a liquid honey center.. Delicious! The drydown has a slightly generic feeling in the background.. A good kind of generic though.
Longevity is probably between moderate and long lasting whilst sillage is moderate.
I'd probably compare this fragrance with CK One Shock, Van Cleef and Arpels Midnight in Paris and Ferarri Uomo. Not that they are similar fragrances (although there definitely are similarities between Shock and Avant Garde) but because they all completely outperform their price tag and marketing!

Worth every penny and then some!

rd115leo

I mix this with Thierry Mugler Pure Havane.

40% Pure Havane and 60% Avant Garde.

Creates a wonderful aroma, the TM adds a certain longevity and the vanilla adds fantastically to the aroma.

diego.rzse

The opening, somehow, reminds me a lot of 1 Million but then it starts to smell very pleasant, like La Nuit de L'Homme with a dark note of tobacco and then the famous beeswax note that smells amazing on my dry skin.
It is a blind buy if you're interested in sweet fragrances, very masculine though.
It DOES NOT smell cheap, even if its price is below average.

Joeri

Extremely nice and very affordable. Safe blind buy if you're into sweeties. Thank you Lanvin

TheFragranceBoss

/update
Many people insist this smells similar to YSL La Nuit. I have tested both and I don't find it to be a case. The path that the fragrances take is similar, but the scent is very different.

Melted

I took the plunge with this fragrance after reading generally very positive reviews. I only have one other scent that I would consider sweet, so this is a nice addition and excellent value.

I've had it on since it arrived 24 hours ago. Very pleased with this. I don't pick up the tobacco but I do get the honey that so many others mention.

Nice bottle too.

Raproid

Sam37, what wood? It's a honey-cookie with a slight tobacco-like spicy undertone and YSL "La Nuit" vibe. :D Not to be sicken by it, apply behind your ears and only 1 spray on each side. I made the same mistake the first time - 2 sprays on each side and close to the nose and it almost killed me by the end of the day. Just apply wisely and it'll be alright!

Sam37

where is the wood? this perfume is too sweet and ginger, if you want to smell like a giant ginger cookie use it,
not recommended, makes you feel sick on sweetness.

SysOp

Very weak, cosy and safe. Quite boring, but at least it's cheap.

KalinMJ

awesome!
i can't believe, this is masterpiece!
Longetivity : 9/10

Amazing!!!! To me its a mix between Pure havanne and La nuit de lhomme

jakob rolandz nilsson

Got this today. Very pleasant to the nose. sweet, dark, tobacco honey :)

After 12 hours+ of spraying it on my arm I can still smell it! :)

Yurpdod

Sweet honeyed tobacco with a spicy, ambery base. A pleasant scent but I get very poor sillage and longevity out of it. It's inexpensive but I would rather pay a little more and get Eau des Baux, which has much better performance and is a more developed scent overall. Unfortunately Avant Garde is a pass for me.

AtticusFinch

I don't pick up any beeswax scent here, but the sweet tobacco smell is certainly nice. Indeed, this frag isn't loud at all, and the longevity is so-so. Still, Avant Garde is an easy going, comfortable scent that I will continue to enjoy.

nina3

A lovely, soft, inoffensive scent with some depth to it.
This settles into the skin beautifully, it could be layered nicely with some other fragrance for an extra kick. Lemon should work. I can definitely identify the sweet tobacco and beeswax notes here. The bergamot in the opening and lavender right after it.
I got this as a budget friendly blind buy for a friend, it has surprisingly good lasting power on him, silage is soft to moderate. It's a friendly scent, not a loud one that necessarily stands out.. that could be good or bad, depending on your preferences. I do love this but generally prefer a little stronger things on myself. The packaging and the bottle are classy.

alunwill

I bought 3 "cheapies" at the same time, Avant Garde, Midnight in Paris and Rochas Man. I tested all 3 on my hands and thought none were anything special and basically just left them sitting in a drawer whilst I moved on and enjoyed other scents. I've since revisited Rochas Man and it has become a favourite of mine which I vastly underrated so decided I needed to revisit Avant Garde and give it a fair crack of the whip.

Boy am I glad I did. I seem to be drawn to tobacco scents, Tom Ford's Tobacco Vanille being my absolute favourite but that beauty is is powerful it is not really suitable for everyday wear and I keep it for special occasions. I've even invested in a bottle of Tabac Rouge which has a similar vibe to Tobacco Vanille but is still too ostentatious to be an every day or work scent.

So, enter Avant Garde, a more subdued version of Tabac Rouge suitable for day to day occasions with a more subtle honey & tobacco combination compared to its extrovertive cousin. Smooth, well blended, it seems to sit nicely on my skin and envelope me in a comfortable cocoon, the human equivalent of a bee keeper puffing smoke to calm his swarm, this is relaxing, soothing and an all round beautiful scent.

I also get the comparison with La Nuit but on my skin the YSL scent barely lasts the hour mark whereas this will comfortably keep going and bring a smile to my face for the whole working day. As bang for buck goes, you really can't fault this and I would recommend anyone not to be as foolish as I was originally and be sure to give this one the time and attention it deserves. Now, time to revisit the Van Cleef methinks!!

Guinea54

very nice fragrance. can't see why people would be in love with something like l'homme which doesn't last at all anymore, and not like this one. Its in a similar genre to me as l'homme. Has that creamy kind of light sweetness.. its a nice scent, especially for the price. Longevity and projection I haven't tested out, but I would bet its better than l'homme.

assim.hayderi

Warm spicy and good smelling scent for the younger crew but nothing unique or special. The projection and longevity is good for the price you pay for it. Thumbs up!

BriantheFragranceNewb

I find this to be a nice, clean, soapy scent. Unfortunately, I already have the clean, soapy niche filled in my collection, so this one will go to the back of the line of my wish list. I would agree this is not a terribly unique scent, but it's pleasant for sure.

UPDATE: Perhaps a little clean and soapy, but it's also somewhat sweet especially when first applied. The biggest negative I found with this is it doesn't seem to last terribly long. Regardless, it's definitely a nice scent worth consideration.

Joeri

Each fall and winter, this cosy little friend fills in his trusty spot on the shelf. We love one another.

boulouboulou

I expected a bomb, but no, it's settles gently close to the skin for a nice sweet and aromatic effect.

Nice, but nothing to die for, nor new.

Nikkafragrance

Nothing avant garde about this, however I like it. It opens with lavander, coriander, peppers and settles into an aromatic fragrance with sweet notes. It's very fresh and easy to wear skin scent, despite the loud opening.

VictorVuong

My second review: its really a skin scent, so don't bother to wear it on hot days. It's really sexy and lovable.

rowan.walters

Somehow this eluded me when it was released so I recently blind bought this based on the reviews on fragrantica and I have not been disappointed.
So much has been written on composition and notes that I shall limit myself to my own reaction and impressions.

I have a thing about woody notes and for the last few days find myself sniffing my wrist for sheer pleasure whenever I wear this.
In terms of dollar value it's a no brainer - it's classy, pleasing and elegant.
I wouldn't mind having a decent supply if this stuff for the future as its a great, inoffensive and discreet everyday office scent. Definitely pleasing to the noses of others and attracts interest and compliments from men and women.

The only other honey frag I recall is the discontinued Nicole Miller (which I adore), another serenely beautiful men's fragrance.

i agree with the reviewer who suggested that this would be awesome in EDP concentration - since I mainly wear frags for my own pleasure it often frustrates me when I can no longer smell them - but in my case at least, experience has shown me that just because I cannot smell something doesn't mean that it isn't there.
In the past I tended to reapply in this instances, but the noses of others have become my reality check and in this case I I know that longevity is actually better than it may seem to the wearer.
Really glad I bought this frag and I would recommend it to all fans of woody scents seeking something a bit different. Perhaps not revolutionary but very pleasing.

jbsbluebird

I definitely get tobacco and what I think is the beeswax. Kind of like a powdered, honey tobacco with vanilla, but it's not heavy on the powder. Longevity and silage are slightly below average. It's nice and a cheapy. Was told I smell like marshmallows, so just call me the Stay Puft Man.

Takeshi

I wore this on spring time and it packs a punch, I liked that. worth every penny :)

RobbieX

Avant Garde is similar to Shock at first but it's MUCH nicer and smoother. The dry down on me ends up similar to Hanae Mori HiM. It's a really well blended classy scent with good longevity.

Buckbrick

Oh my. What a find! It was love at first whiff. There was no hesitation in getting this beautiful fragrance. It's softness is a welcome change in a world of hard hitting fougeres and aquatics. Yes it's similar to YSL La Nuit, which has a louder opening and receding to a beautiful skin scent. The Avant Garde is unbelievable from start to end. Extremely wearable in all occasions and seasons. I just wish it lasted longer. Just like Armani pour homme, I will look back one day and remember fondly the moment I smelled this.

Sadly a very underrated fragrance.

TheBawssThomas

This is absolutely beautiful..did not expect this for the money i spent. longevity is around 10 hours and sillage is strong for at least 4-5 hours...this is a real stunner and im sure the ladies will love it...cannot comment on the compliments cause ive only used it in the house so far. the bottle design is spectacular as well and feels nice and high quality for the price. It smells similar to YSL la nuit, very similar. great scent for the money would've expected to pay round 70 for this scent.

VictorVuong

Delicious! Smells like a piece of honey-dipped bread.

norbertholy.com

Nice gently aromatic fragrance with very good price, but unfortunately every single notes are disappear in hour. Not strong enough for me at all.

archlordema

I truly have grown to love this fragrance a lot. Many people tent to compare to it to La Nuit De L'Homme Yves Saint Laurent, Armani Eau de Nuit, Spicebomb Viktor & Rolf, Eau des Baux L'Occitane, Armani Code; even visiting other forums like basenotes.com I get people reviewing it with resemblance of Tabacco Vanille Tom Ford, Bvlgari Black, Midnight in Paris Van Cleef & Arpels, Dior Homme, Dolce & Gabbana The One (in drydown) and many many more masterpieces. But here is the deal, all this only leads us to see in our sigh a true under rated classic that we should respect for what it is an unique and gorgeous Oriental woody fragrance with a very gentle conbination of spices and amber+beeswax that makes it feel a little gourmandish but at the same time very masculine because of the tabacco. That yes shares similarities will this other masterpieces mentioned before but this scent is so subtle and unique in form and shape that was become my signature scent, only because it makes me feel relax and secure but also and allure gentleman (I guess you get the point).

I get about 7-8 hours of longevity and 5-6 hours of sillage comparing this and the great scent it is to other great ones like The One D&G this one beats them from every point of view, Quality scent, Unbeatable price, Good Longevity, good sillage and not an "In your face" scent. Gotta love Lanvin's Avant Garde.

I also have to add up that the sprayer is top quality and the bottle is really nice and sleek.

True Winner.

Scent: 10/10
Sillage: 8.5/10
Longevity: 8.5/10
Overall: 9/10

Must Buy, even blindly of you like any of the mentioned above.
I mean you can easily find this at $22.99 at many sites...

Jerry Can

It opens with a distinct cardamom, lavender and beeswax smothered with an excellent clean and fresh bergamot; then finishes sweet and woody. I don't get any cinnamon that some have suggested. A lot of tobacco as well as wood for sure.

I can't add to the reviews below other than to say that this is like L'Occitane Eau des Baux - but nicer, principally by being less vanillic. Now, I know this doesn't have vanilla in it; but there is a real caramel-like sweetness and creamyness. A hint of insense too perhaps? Sniffing it on me right now (3hrs post application) it is actually almost gourmand - like baclava, bread and butter pudding or crème caramel.

I bought my bottle in August 2014 from Allbeauty; but I'm left wondering if others I have tried periodically have seemed more smokey. I have this sense that there may be a little inconsistancy with Avant Garde. (I hope I'm wrong, of course). I'd be interested hearing from anyone else who has had a similar vibe.

Projection only modest. Longevity the same - being a little timid after 30 minutes. The low cost means the extravagance of regular reapplication makes it less of an issue. Such a shame because that cardamon/lavender/beeswax combination is really very pleasant; pretty special in fact, having never encountered anything quite like it. If it was linear then this would be blissful. Still, Avant Garge is interesting, demure and (to me at least) a true original. Above all, very lovely!

All Lanvin scents seem to exhibit creative excellence and these days are found at really reasonable prices too. What more can one ask for?

Tobacco-Honeyed Parapraxis

This perfume is the performance of being at the liminality of old to the new. You are thrown into an aura which emanates, simultaneously, the perfumery Semiotic Codes of pre-1990s and post-2000s. The elements are combined masterfully; so much so that you cannot single out any one element in the harmonious core except the honey-tobacco combo with which the whole thing is wrapped, but you know that they are working beneath.
This, just like any great thing in life, doesn't last. The sillage is about 30 minutes, and longevity(skin-scent) is about 5 hours. That said, 30 minutes will do if it’s hell (or should I say heaven?) of an olfactory drive, right?

JeffreyHan

i know that many people said that avant garde is very similar with YSL la nuit de l'homme, is it true?..
is it that similar?
coz, i do own the YSL, and really want to buy this to, as many people said its a good fragrance.
but if its so similar to YSL La nuit, then whats the point to buy this, right??

wongkar

i got a lot of honey here and there, slight tobacco vibe, this thing lasts but here is the downside, projection. yes, it projects under average for me, for those who want long lasting fragrance but dont want to get noticed when you enter the room, this will suits you.

Scent : 8/10
Longevity : 8.5/10 , stays about 6-8 hours on my skin
Sillage : 5/10

overall : well made fragrance.

Buy / try / pass : Try before you buy :)

ecojoe69

On me, I get lots of honey, lavender and spice. Its a pretty potent juice for the pricepoint and an easy one to wear but it won't rank at the top of any lists. I bought it mostly in hopes of finding a sweet tobacco scent and although it does fit that bill, the tobacco isn't really forward enough for me. It seems to keep a constant set of notes on me and doesn't really change much over time as it becomes softer. Don't get this if you are really hoping for a strong tobacco note although it isn't too sweet for having beeswax as a primary note.

lee99

I like the smell of this fragrance a lot but the longevity and projection is terrible, the worst one in my collection. I sprayed 12 sprays on my shirt and after a few hours there was absolutely nothing. Heck even Bleu De Chanel will stay on my shirt for a day and it 'was' the worst one in my collection!

I know it's inexpensive but so is Perry Ellis 360 Red and Perry Ellis M but they last most the day on me!

Rorshach1004

If you are expecting wave after wave of silage bomb honey and tobacco from this scent then you’ll be disappointed when you actually try it out. Remember that it’s a budget scent, not a niche, and probably not even a top end designer either. Here’s what you get- A spice-bomb-esque peppery beginning that calms down to a sweet lavender. It’s not very strong, so you’ll need to liberally apply to get the best out of it. I got a slight hint of honey, but no tobacco. To my nose it’s a watery spice bomb, not as strong, as intensely spicy and nowhere near as complex, long lasting or room domineeringly powerful. It’s an okay after shower scent that you can go mad with to feel fresh. It’s not niche and at the price you’re paying you really shouldn’t be expecting it to be anything other than the decent peppery soapy bargain perfume that it actually is.

Bigsly

I don't remember what Shock smells like (did too much sampling that day), so I won't compare the two. This one is a very nice blend that is reasonably natural smelling. There are no major "spikes" to it, so if you don't like lavender, strong wood notes, etc., you don't have to worry. I also don't get any significant iso e super or any other aroma chemical overload situation. The tobacco is obvious, as is a sweet/creamy quality, but it never becomes super-sweet, syrupy, or "blob"-like. At these prices you can't expect anything better. IMO. Imagine a much weaker Tobacco Vanille without that dried fruit accord and it's not too far off. This can compete with the more expensive designer scents of today, and sometimes I want a "real" tobacco scent without any "bells and whistles" or nasty aroma chemical overload, and this is where AG shines!

olfactoryfan

My initial indifference for this fragrance gradually transitioned into liking it, then morphed into appreciating it, then finally evolved into full-blown loving it.

The fresh lavender at the heart of Avant Garde does a wonderful job of bringing out and lifting up the tobacco, the honeyed beeswax and the spices. The benzoin adds a lovely warm fuzziness to the overall character.

This is what I would describe as an intelligent scent - it's cleverly conceived, well thought out and smartly executed. There's nothing excessive or unnecessary here, the balance is just about perfect. Performance-wise, Avant Garde delivers solid longevity and radiates discreetly.

The effect it achieves is one of quiet confidence - an effect that may just win you over too. Bravo Lanvin.

ssheth92

Blind bought this due to all the positive reviews.. not sure why but this one gives me a headache, literally, with 3-4 sprays. It does smell unique, but not that great to me. Have to say the sprayer on this thing is very, very good. But because it gives me a headache, I can't really wear it..

Smell: 4/5
Longevity: 4/5, around 5 hours, sometime more! Very good here
Projection: 3,5/5, I don't really get noticed with this
Versatility: 4,5/5, Close to be an all-season, all-occasion scent. Really
Overall: 16/20
All positive comments are right, Comparing this with YSL La Nuit de L'Homme I agree with KaseyC “they are very different from each other but sharing similar sweet aromatic vibes”, good replacement, specially in the money department. Side to side, La Nuit still gets it.
I think that the nose behind this is actually Shyamala Maisondieu who works very well.

LordCharfield

In this age of great financial difficulty and poverty for many across the globe, I find it astonishing that there is a review on here actually suggesting that a higher price should have been put on this product. I know for a fact that there are people in a comparatively rich country like England UK who are having to chose between eating and heating their home during the winter and buying any sort of fragrance, let alone this one would be out of their reach. Fragrance should be there for all to enjoy. There are PLENTY of prohibitively expensive quality perfumes out there for those who crave absolute exclusivity. Those of us who can afford to indulge in this hobby are in a very privileged position and probably, from a global perspective, make up a very small percentage of the population. We should "share nicely". After all, the owners/shareholders of these large companies aren't going to starve!

Now, Avant Garde is a truly wonderful fragrance. For those of us who are privileged, this is a very affordable scent and the quality and presentation are superior to many higher priced perfumes. Similarities with La Nuit for sure (I have both), but this has enough legs to stand on its own. This is now easily in my top ten and I can't recommend it more highly. It really is beautiful and a good performer. If you look at my collection, made up from a high percentage of blind buys, this stands out as one of my greatest acquisitions along with LIDGE, Rochas Man, Jaipur, Midnight in Paris and Lalique Hommage à L'Homme. The fact that the market is saturated with (inferior) over hyped, over priced and ubiquitous designer and celebrity brands guarantees that when wearing this, you are unlikely to encounter people who are familiar with this.
So: affordable, beautiful and, in the scheme of things, exclusive - well worth the blind buy :-)

bsgraider

Blind bought this based on a recommendation, and I like it a lot. It’s a very smooth and modern tobacco fragrance. It’s sweet but fresh at the same time.. smells very sophisticated.

Once I tried it on, I was actually surprised at the low price. I wear it occasionally, and get lots of compliments on it from strangers – pretty much every time I have it on.

Lasts pretty much all day – projection is decent for the first 2-3 hours, and at arm’s length for the rest of the day, which makes it safe for work, school, etc. It won’t enter the room before you do.

Amazing fragrance - definitely recommended. I don’t think you can go wrong with this one.

LOVE IT

Same Carmadom, Lilac and Bergamot accord as in YSL's L'Homme de la Nuit. If you like one, you'll like the other. Do you need both? Probably not.

Something in between of La nuit and Boss bottled. Actually it has La nuit's opening and Boss bottled dry down. That is why it is so versatile and lighter than La nuit. Fits Day/Night. Although, it has really weak sillage, lasts long, realy enough, but close to skin.

WEATHER / SEASON : Fall, spring (and moderately cold winter)

TIME / : night and day

WHICH MAN ? : Any age, smartly-dressed and quite outgoing. Both a casual and "dressed-up" scent. Would fit any occasion.

SCENT / FEEL : 17/20 (I noticed beewax, tobacco, lavander and some "woody" spice... some say cinnamon. Maybe so) -
Gorgeous scent, not offensive but not too common either, AG stands on its own. This is a "sweet" (slighty on the gourmand side) frag for those who don't like sweet fragrances (no, this is not "1 million"). Strong beewax at the opening, at times it reminds me of furniture cleaning product.
Then it evolves to Tobacco mainly (after an hour so), but remain sweet (beewax still in the background). That's the best part of the evolution, IMHO. That's when the frag is the most masculine and the sexiest. The dry down is almost as good, with amber popping up : I love how the scent manages to keep ALL the notes til the dry down, they are just more or less present. I'm shocked how it shows such complexity for that low price. Many would actually think its not that complex because it doeesnt change much, but me think that's why it succeeds : The notes blend so well together. No notes clashing (they quite belong to the smae "family"/"category"), they just kind of evolve in a very natural way.

LONGEVITY : 7/10 - As mentionned above, the scent keeps all its notes till the dry down. I get a solid 7 hours with Avant-Garde. I love how it's just skin close, but still strong to the wearer's nose (a whiff every now and then).

PROJECTION / SILLAGE : 6/10 . Thats' where I'm slightly disappointed, because the sillage and projection are very wekk. Maybe it was supposed to represent the low-key side of Lanvin men's collections pre-2012. You barely get a foot sillage... for 45min -1h.

OVERALL : 15 /20

NOTES / ADD INFO :
I saw it was largely voted as a winter fragrance, but I disagree because IMHO it's not really for deep cold temperatures, mainly for chilly days in spring or fall (especyally nights).
You can blind buy it, it's a crowd pleaser. Lot of compliments on this (mainly during the middle notes part). my overall note is 15/20, but if I had to compare the cheap price vs. the benefits, its a 20/20 for me!
