Expecting more vanilla than the Amber and almond that are definitely the strongest scents.

The opening IMO is too brash and overpowering like a cheapish clone of Gaultier 2 mixed with Givenchy Pi.

When I was a young child I would cringe when I smelled any avon perfume on someone. It always had the same dry down. But I never thought ‘oh, that’s an old lady perfume , or that’s old lady smell.
I just didn’t like the actual perfume. It sounds disrespectful to our elders. It also does not help in descriptions.
Now on to the review- I agree with people who say try it before you buy it. I can’t get past the ash tray/cigarette note at the end.

Colossalscent

Smells exactly like an almond-flavored talcum shower gel! Not outdated and pretty unique overall, unisex but leaning a little bit more on the femminine side. It has an old lady vibe when smelled upclose, but in the air you actually don't get that.

Senki nem érez párhuzamot az Amouage Sunshine ylang-ylang illatjegyével? Nekem pont azt a kedves, megnyugtató érzést adja! Zseniális illat mindkettő!

MissMarco

This is one of my favourite cheapies ever.im starting to discover that I do have a love of aldehydic vanillas with certain citruses at the top. I see certain similarities with the top of this and Tom Ford mettalique. And I love that fragrance. I smell a definite hint of cherry in this even if it's not there, it may be the mix of tonka with the other notes. This projects so pleasantly I wore this to work and got compliments on it. Its not for everyone but to me,this is comforting and sexy at the same time.

Teepeeps

This is not its notes, to me. Midnightdew (below), advised it’s for ladies over 50; this lady over 50 disagrees and douses herself with Akro Bake in an act of rebellion at such a simplistic ageist assertion 😂.

This, to me, is too synthetic and gave fly spray vibes beyond even Zara’s worst vanilla. Better to spend a little more and get the Granado Vanilla. I passed it on to a 14 year old girl who loved it.

MidnightDew

I blind bought it for my sibling as a gift. Looking at the notes... I said maybe it has a moderate sweetness without being cloying. I smelled it before offering it as a gift and I regreted it 100% because the aldehydes reminds me of something like a funeral. Nevertheless, I appreciate the rest of the notes that seem very natural and organic, especially the vanilla and amber. Somewhere into these notes you can feel a sunny mood, only if you really try hard to feel them. Older ladies (50+) will appreciate this kind of fragrance. It's not for everyone. It's really odd, different, like you don't know what to say about it.

Kjkoni

Rave reviews made me really want to check out this classic cheapie. I really enjoy the warm and cozy nuttiness in the dry down of this fragrance- but the opening has a very sweet aldehydic presence that just does not agree with my nose or preferences and causes a bit of a headache inducing reaction. It makes me really appreciate the simple perfection of my bottle of BDK's Velvet Tonka that I enjoy from beginning to end.

MandalaaXO

Lovely. Although there are no almond or pistachio notes, this is exactly what I expected Yum Pistachio to smell like, NOT industrial bathroom cleaner. This is an almond creamy citrus fragrance. I'm glad to have a nice pistachio-esque perfume in my collection.

kris0212

Ár érték arányában is kiváló. Nálam Ő az örök klasszikusok közé tartozik.

DDawson

I've had this for years I love mixing tonka fragrances with this you can mix this joop la bain, with Shalimar Millésime Tonka Guerlain to get bdk velvet tonka just fyi. Also when I smelled kayali yum and especially in lattafa affection I can really get it, the base scent under pistachio and cream I smelled something similar. Something ive smelled before!! This clean sweet vanilla that's almost shampoo esque or cologne esque smell...it's la bain!!! And if you layer pistachio yum and la Bain it really boosts up the fragrance and makes it denser and way more full body and moderate projector. Also kinda of smells like a stronger thicker messy sexy just rolled out of bed dry down just with out all the sweetness in the initial spray or messy sexy just rolled out of bed.. which honestly is what makes me love msjroob lol

Joop Le Bain is a classic fragrance that exudes warmth, sensuality, and comfort. From the moment you experience its opening notes, you are enveloped in a cloud of sweet, creamy vanilla, which immediately evokes feelings of coziness and relaxation. If I had to describe it in one word, it would definitely be "cozy".

saeglopur

A former roommate of mine wore this. We lived in a cold country, and it went well with her thrifted, fluffy pink sweaters.

I’ve been on a vanilla kick lately and blind bought this when it was on sale — though it’s already quite affordable. To my nose, Joop! Le Bain smells like cherry tobacco more than anything. It’s boozy, too, and slightly vanillic, but not at all sweet; it’s a deep and smoky tonka. The sillage is quite strong — one spray is enough, and it stays on clothes. On me, the scent is quite linear, but it’s very well-blended. A real steal if it’s your style!

Aside from wearing pink, my roommate also smoked, so this really was perfect for her…not as much for me.

Ksj_

Those who compare this to Givenchy's Pi must either get their olfactory system checked by an ENT specialist, or they're very misguided on what Pi actually smells like.

This is very feminine and smells like play-doh.

nikkinicole

I agree their website has some note differences than here. But, I mean...do they ever really reveal everything?
I love this fragrance. Simply put, it's beautiful. Intial spray does have an airy scent, fresh air. But it quickly settles to floral. Then my favorite part: the vanilla drydown with the other notes bring in a cozy deeper vanilla. Comforting in these colder months.

MelissaKS

This is a fantastic buy. It’s a lovely, soft scent with powdery almond and cherry notes. Very cozy. I’ve read the notes listed here and on the Joop! website, but the way it smells to me doesn’t match them with the exception of the Tonka.

I understand why people say it’s kind of similar to Tardes (a favorite almond scent of mine), but Le Bain has way more of that cherry note. It also has a TINY hint of tobacco, but it’s not super noticeable on my skin. With Tardes I get more of the nostalgic My Little Pony sticker and doll head smell, which I really like in that fragrance. Le Bain’s cherry note reminds me of the cherry in Cherry Punk. I haven’t seen anyone mention that, but for me, on my skin, it does.

Oddly enough, I don’t recall smelling this in the 90s when it was popular. I’d say it was worth the $15 I paid for it. This was very successful blind buy (unlike my Jovan White Musk). So-called cheapies can really be hit or miss.

Update: This does smell very similar to Tardes on the dry down. After two or so hours, it smells nearly identical to my nose. I will have to test them side by side.

Scent: 8/10

Longevity isn’t great on my skin, but it’s cheap enough to re-spray throughout the day. 2/10

Projection isn’t great either. It’s very intimate. 4/10

Notwithstanding the poor longevity and projection, I’d buy it again. $15 is a tiny price to pay for such a pretty scent.

Smokeandhoney

Really nice aldehydes and abstract opening.

Le Bain is super comforting. Smells so unique, a little vintage but never dated. The opening has a aldehydic soapiness perhaps from the orange blossom, lemon and aldehydes from what I can decipher. I feel like the lily of the valley holds up this soapy feel into the heart of the fragrance. The vanilla is smooth, the amber isn’t heavy. Powdery tonka, a gentle aromatic whisper. I feel like the composition of top and heart notes make the scent reminiscent of the cult favourite shower oil Amande Huile de Douche from L’Occitane and classic baby lotions and bubble baths. But where it gets more grown up is when an delicate essence of sweet cherry tobacco makes itself known although tobacco isn’t listed, I find this to be a gorgeous touch.

I can’t discern the other florals in this, perhaps just nicely blended or dominated by the other materials and notes. It’s like the scent of a brand new doll’s head or Barbie’s hair. This is one of those crazy affordable fragrances that doesn’t smell cheap and flies way under the radar. I got this for £16! A steal for what this is. I have nothing like this in my collection. Has me sniffing myself like a bloodhound. This is good.

Smells like you used your Cabbage Patch Kid to hide your vanilla cherry roll ups from your conservative parents. 🚬

Le Bain is a gorgeous amber fragrance. It reminds me a lot of Tardes by Carner Barcelona. In the opening, they are very far apart but in the dry down, on the skin, I couldn't tell them apart. Le Bain opens brighter because of the aldehydes but the aldehydes here are not vintage. They actually bring a fizzy and bright aspect to the composition and the Rose although soft it’s present. Joop Le Bain is well-loved for a good reason.

selinacat

The opening smells like a gust of vanilla air. My skin doesn't suit aldehydes very well. Everything else here is right up my alley especially for fall but I still struggle. The citrus-aldehyde opening stays throughout for me.

It's beastly yet performs well all year round. The aldehydes make it nice during a hot summer night. Le Bain feels like getting ready in a master bedroom. There's this really unique vibe with hints of hairspray, walk in closets with vintage dresses in garment bags, inside leather purses; sandals & lipstick. Sunscreen & posh room diffusers.

This is the coziest homebody vanilla ambre I have, and unlike anything I've got in my sea of tonka bean aromatics.

looleeloo

Reminds me of Turkish delight. I didn't expect to like it since it was made such a long time ago. But I'm starting to understand and appreciate these cheap sweet vintage perfumes (another example being Wish by Chopard). They keep you warm in cold weather.

I actually layered this one with Encre Noire and love it... today. Let's hope it stays this way or becomes even better.

AuraAngelMuse

When trying this for the first time, the initial spray and sniff after letting it settle was: sunscreen. Not tropical sunscreen. Just plain sunscreen that isn't supposed to have a smell but we still all recognize the scent. My mind immediately takes me back to when I was a kid and my family would go to 6 Flags or Holiday World. The smell of sunscreen everywhere. It's kinda like a bitter yet sweet almond scent. It's slightly reminiscent of soap as well. But to be honest this smells like a less sweet version of Hypnotic Poison. It's got the band-aid, doll head vibe which is the usual for perfumes that smell like almond. I don't see almond in the notes but I am 100% getting the same scent as every almond-heavy perfume I've ever smelled. It's got a good sillage and lasting power, going strong for at least 5 hours. But yeah, overall it's just basically a soapy, sunscreen-y almond vanilla for me. Slight cherry cough syrup medicinal vibe as well. Hypnotic Poison's less sweet sister.

Edit: Loving this. The drydown actually gets pretty sweet, probably just as sweet as Hypnotic Poison, but the opening has a sour/bitter tinge to it if you spray too much. I would say this definitely reminds me of Hypnotic Poison and Fleur de Femme from La Rive(Poison Girl dupe.) Once it dries down I get cherry cough syrup mixed with almond vanilla. I'll probably buy a backup bottle or two cause it's really nice.

Lilbrit23

This just smells like bug spray to me :(

rene.saller

Just one spray of Joop! Le Bain on the back of my hand, and I think I'm in love. This smells indescribably delicious to me, like a cross between a vanilla-marzipan cupcake, with a kiss of pipe tobacco and balsam. It's not too sweet, like so many vanilla-forward fragrances, but it's not too sharp--it smells clean but not like detergent; delicious but not too juvenile. The florals are beautifully integrated with the woods and citrus. I think this smells way more expensive than it is.

Update: I love it more and more as the almond and tobacco notes merge with the vanilla. I find this fragrance so beautiful that I just ordered a bigger bottle. What a lovely surprise!

Update: I hope I didn't actually buy that bigger bottle. This isn't awful, but it is just so very strange. Sometimes I get the delicious orange-blossom-almond-cherry-honey-balsam-musk notes, and everything feels sweet and dandy; other times (like when I'm trying to sleep) it just smells very strongly of cherry-scented pipe tobacco. It's more like hugging a clean and fragrant grandpa than it is like cuddling a baby.

I (unwisely) put this on well-moisturized skin before I went to bed. I thought it would work well with my cherry-blossom leave-in conditioner by Aveda (it smells a lot like Jergen's cherry-almond lotion). Well, the cherry, vanilla, almond, and honey is fine, but the tobacco scent made me feel sick after awhile. (Likely because I'm an ex-smoker, and I pretty much had to develop an aversion to kick the addiction.) I think my nose is just getting confused by the coumarin (either from the Tonka or the almond accord or both). At any rate, the kiss of tobacco started to feel more like an unwanted tongue-kiss from an old stewbum. I'm downgrading this from a Love to a Like, with the caveat that it's really more of a Love-Hate relationship.

Ian157

Nice pleasant fragrance not earth shattering has a similarity to Johnson’s baby products but I don’t associate it with that I nice oriental scent can work well if layering it with. Something else but more sprays brings a stronger more defined scent, very happy as a blind buy

Charmedbymeghan

This is a blind buy for me. I've recently fallen in love with BDK Velvet Tonka and was looking for other fragrances that people find similar to it, so I picked this up hoping for a good cheapie.

I am 38 years old, and Joop! as a brand is before my time. This is the first I've smelled from the house.

At first it gave me: old school perfume, but make it gourmand type of vibe. It smells like a perfume, not a food. And I didn't get the comparison to Velvet Tonka until the drydown, about 15 minutes in because that's when the almond/tonka accords come out. Overall this is an aromatic-gourmand with almondy tonka & some vanilla.

Comparing to Givenchy Pi - I understand this comparison only because they are both aromatic-gourmands with vanilla & a similar projection/longevity.

This has a unique smell though, it's own thing. And the first day I tested it I was definitely on the fence, thinking "Do I even really like this??".
... fast forward to 2 days later and I spray it on and it already smells like an old friend - good and comforting. This is truly beautiful and enjoyable. Unlike Pi & Velvet Tonka but I guess if those 2 had a baby then it may smell similar to this. But not exact*

I bought a bottle for only $22. I suggest to give it a few tries on different days to test it. Don't judge too quickly. Sometimes our brains need a little adjustment period to mentally catalog a new scent profile and then we are allowed to enjoy it the more we get acquainted with it. Interesting how that happens...

vugelke

Does anybody know if all Joop fragrances are being discontinued with exception of the original Homme?

ingrid.superstar

Nothing entirely new to say about this fragrance, but maybe my impressions will help tip the scale on someone's decision:

- If the opening puts you off, give it some time to develop! There is an aldehydic/alcoholic cloud at first that takes some time to lift. It veers into smelling a bit like the chemical fixatives in bug spray (not the citronella). This is best sprayed on skin IMO. On paper, it stays stuck in this sickly phase for a looong time.
- In the heart, this fragrance is an interesting juncture between toasty cherry tobacco, fancy almond soap, the sweet vinyl-vanilla of dollheads, and the powdery sweetness of heliotrope. The soapy tinge is likely due to a prominent orange blossom.
- The base is heavy honey, tonka bean, vanilla and amber putting off a warm and close-to-the-skin glow. Still smells almondy and rich, but the synthetic overtones have completely faded.

Overall a very easy-to-like, sweet, and creamy fragrance. Smells clean but without being musky and soapy like laundry detergent. A great cheapie to spray with abandon!

jomxlohx

Finally bought a 40ml bottle to try. Why did I wait so long? I didn’t try this in the 90s and 00s either- never really paid attention to Joop fragrances back then. My loss, clearly. This is so lovely, calming and comforting (definitely like relaxing in a warm bath), present yet understated. I get hints of almond and a teeny bit of cherry (which I’m pleased about as I’m not into cherry fragrances), but mostly tonka and soft vanilla. There’s definitely something creamy about it which is the gorgeous magnolia. I can’t fully detect the rose and lychee on my skin. Already one of the best blind buys this year and fully intending to buy back up bottles and look into the flanker. Reminds me of the discontinued Le Couvent cologne of the missions, the drydown of the original Gaultier2 (haven’t tried the re-release yet) and also Al rehab golden sand (would be great layered with the perfume oil).

ruxela

I don t know who writes all these notes on Fragrantica. This is crazy!
The official site is listing lychee, magnolia, turkish rose, ambergris, arabian sandalwood, vanilla and tonka.
Aldehydes?????
Why don t people check the official site?

frag_nostalgia

Stunning blind buy! Rich in tonka, amber, and a cherry-like almond; while getting the occasional waft of patchouli and cedar. It's not as aldehydic as I was expecting! There is a definite orange blossom which totally enhances the fruitiness of the cherry accord. The dry down is warm, balsamic, a marzipan comfort scent. It's not creamy or dessert-like. Not like Lira, for example. The vanilla is aromatic and powdery. In the advanced dry down the florals are more noticeable. It's honestly lovely- just in time for my favorite season. I will reach for this often - it's up there with my most expensive niche scents. Very pleased 🤍

OfTheValley

I bought it blind and was ready for the let down: but it's fantastic! 😍
Only question: where are the notes that I smell? This is a cherry almond/heliotrope scent, could be TF' s Lost cherry's and Cacharel's Gloria's child.
I will definitely use the small bottle and buy a bigger one. This perfume is fantastic, performs like crazy and is perfect for almond-cherry fans like me.
A love.

TabledThoughts

After hearing the hype for awhile I decided to grab a small bottle.
Only cost 25 bucks.
This fragrance has a busy array of notes.
The prominent one is that almond enhanced by some florals and warmed with sandalwood.
I get the "le bain" part. The scent is reminiscent of soaps and powders all used in and after bathing.
The aldehydes lift it and give it a clean-ness.
It is slightly sweet as well.
Am guessing that is the vanilla and/ or tonka.
Upon full drydown it morphs into a honeyed amber.
I'd say it leans feminine but is fairly universal.
Pleasant and worthy of the hype for the small cost.

suzanne_ronald

TONKA (BATH) BOMB! Opens with a citrus-aromatic burst featuring aldehydes, that deepens into the jasmine-sandalwood heart with powdery, sweet, white-floral, near-grape & faintly creamy facets, all resting on a tonka & amber-vanilla base. Tonka is the real star of the show here, and leans to the sweet-tobacco-almond variety with hints of almond-extract, near-dark-cherry, tobacco-blossom and raisin (although there is just a hint of the green-grassy facet in opening). The amber-vanilla in the base features a traditional amber which brings a balsam shampoo or Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo vibe (but not shampoo in general) which is perhaps the connection to "Le Bain" (The Bath). As the bottle ages, the almond/dark-cherry facets of tonka intensify and gain a hint of something near-leather, but maintain a veil of powderiness & a softly dark spiciness of something very near tobacco-blossom.

Contrast to Pi Givenchy:
These are different, but there are similarities with tonka & amber-vanilla. Pi has a more masculine leaning opening, and a less intense approach overall that doesn't go quite as deep with the almond/dark-cherry facets of tonka. Both have excellent performance but Joop! Le Bain has a more intense profile which gives an impression of better projection, although Pi has soft but present projection.

Contrast to Gloria Cacharel:
These are different, but there is an overall similar vibe with almond/dark-cherry facets of tonka. Gloria has a slightly more forward vanilla, while Joop! Le Bain has a slightly more forward baby-powdery vibe. Both have excellent performance.

Overall: This is a longtime classic tonka scent, and with good reason IMHO, and may have been the inspiration behind scents like Gloria Cacharel. Excellent performance and a unisex scent profile. You can't go wrong here. It's a love for me. Enjoy!

inRio

The opening on a warm summer day is almost pure sour cherry syrup on me. I can't believe that the note is not listed. It reminded me of those hard boiled sweets of childhood and I didn't like it so much. But I gave it a chance and it progressed to a musky, powdery and lightly vanillic scent, cozy and clean, while the sour cherry only peeks through. Very lightly sweet and no floral notes or almond on my skin. Good as an everyday scent and there is nothing outdated about this. It will be interesting to try in winter. I wonder if it retains the original character as it is a vintage scent now.

luna k

The first hour or two of this was rough. Very chemically almost like gasoline for the first few minutes to half hour point or so. Maybe that's just because it was the first spray from a new bottle. I don't know.

After the settling period it became a warm, cozy vanilla almond cherry concoction. Semi gourmand like an almond pastry with maraschino cherries but also a soapy bath powder element in the background. As if you're home in a robe after a long bath eating pastries in your kitchen. Later in the day the aromatic notes emerged and JLP became a vanilla powder barber shop unisex experience. Cute, warm, casual and long lasting.

Vanillastorm40

I'm wearing this today and I just realized that this really smells like Alain Delon Lyra. Lyra is a favorite vintage perfume of mine. They are very similar.

absoluteLHerb

Organic citrus cleaner initially, dries down to a soft powdery vanilla which is just lovely. I just love it...after the first hour. Not long lasting on me, but the price-point makes me forget about longevity.

Jennswen

Joop le Bain
Reminds me of candied orange peel that you get in tinned Christmas fruit cake.
A bitter orange dried orange peel.
It has a spice to it. Swisher Sweets Cigarillos?
I'm not mad at it. It evokes memories from my childhood in the 70s. Dare I say bohemian? Cheryl Tiegs running through a wheat field in an over the shoulder dress?
Perfect for a cool rainy day.
It is one of those scents that if it just came out today and cost $400, you would call it interesting and different...exotic. Since it is old school (1989) and "inexpensive" people may not give it a chance today.

dexilio

I love using Le Bain for layering. What a beautifully done vanilla scent, so light and cozy. Not cloying or heavy at all.

missile414

Guys don’t hurt me but this actually reminds me of a dirty version of MFK’s Grand Soir. Just my opinion it might just be me 😅 but the vanilla and amber are really prominent to my nose especially towards the end of the dry down. Lovely scent regardless.

angelick

This is turning out to be a rather interesting fragrance on me, not at all like what everyone on here describees.
I get a lovely rosy cream soap smell, with sweet spices.
I was totally surprised when I read the notes, as a creamy soapy rose was definitely the strongest note for ages.
Now, a few hours later, it still has that rosy soap vibe, but hints of a woody, a tad spicy syrup is competing with the rose soap, instead of being in the background.
I don't detect the vanilla,, cedar, or sandalwood separately, but more as an amalgamation of smells, that constitutes the sweet, woody, spicy note I mention.
It's reminiscent of Ralph Lauren Romance, but the rose in that one is a bit heavier, and more creamy, akin to a face lotion. The spices also aren't as sweet as in Le Bane.
Both Romance, and Le Bane canbe viewed of as clean, fresh fragrances, Romance is less sweet, and smells more like a lotion. Le Bane starts of more like a creamy rose soap, with soft spices/wood in the background, but eventually dries down to the vanilla/wood/spice mix, with only a hint of the rose soap remaining.

Overall, a clean, fresh, and comforting fragrance, with some warmth stemming from the woody/spicy/vanilla in the fragrance.

Lipsticksuzie

The aldehydes aren’t as strong as I had anticipated after reading these reviews. They’re there but they calm down really quickly. This is a very comforting fragrance, I can see myself wearing this after a relaxing bath when I just want to lounge about afterwards. Or a bedtime scent for those that like that sort of thing.
A lovely fresh and clean fragrance that will still satisfy a gourmand lover - which I am. In fact it has something for everyone, ticks a lot of boxes so to speak. I see it being suitable for all ages and could lean unisex too imo.
Could suit most seasons I suppose, but I probably wouldn’t wear it on a really warm summers day, not because I think it would be cloying or anything, I just don’t think it has that vibe. It’s Iight and airy but not bright enough for summer I feel. This is definitely office friendly, you’ll smell like you’ve just had a shower before work but sprayed a lovely gourmand fragrance on over the top.

doya

Wonderful orange blossom paired with vanilla to create an incredibly pleasant experience. This is so similar to Nikos Sculpture, though Le Bain is a bit more vanillish and its longevity and sillage seem to be better. Wonderful, cheerful perfumes and great value for money.

Feisha1984

Definitely an amber floral..unlike anything I own. It’s white flowers and sweet pipe tobacco in syrup. Performs beautifully in cool or cold weather. Purchased this based on YouTube reviews and have zero regrets!

Back in the early 2000's Bath & Body Works offered an Aromatherapy Sensual Jasmine Vanilla fragrance. I used to bathe in it - literally because I had the body wash and figuratively because I had the very potent body spray. It was so, so good. Le Bain reminds me of that maybe 65%. If the tonka were subtracted, it would be closer. My only criticism of Le Bain is that it has a surplus of cherry amber, making it a choker in hot humidity. In cool weather, this is lovely.

It's well named because it smells like a shower after someone used a perfumey body wash. There's a face cream undertone or maybe the scentshadow of Jergens cherry almond lotion. In a good way.

PennyPinchin

This is a mature, discreet beauty. Must get through the opening, though. It becomes a skin scent, helping me understand its "Le Bain" aspects. If I am on a business trip, I can see taking this along; it would go nice in the seminar (think chilly ballroom) as well as for cocktails.

n0b0dyn0se

Potent vanilla extract pouring into a chlorinated pool. The sensation of drinking in large gulps, but barely quenching your thirst... or breathing underwater in the aforementioned pool. The hair of a band new doll, but with a cooling overtone. Vanilla icing sugar melting on the tongue and a glass of bourbon, somewhere nearby. A warm, marzipan-like drydown. Very idiosyncratic (despite its sweet vanillic nature) and addictive (in the manner of gasoline).

Neverapeoplepleaser

This is gorgeous! I blind bought this after seeing a You Tube review. Probably my best blind buy to date! Just delicious. Instantly loved it from first spray....hard to describe. I find the jasmin and tonka very prominent, in a fantastic way. I almost get a (not sickly) almond. Smells luxurious without being too sweet or pretentious. Smells very expensive to me. I could bathe in this. A very everyday scent, I think, signature worthy. Very non offensive, I think this is a crowd pleaser. Very good projection and longevity. Total bargain.

Bezza52

I recently purchased this after reading many reviews on Fragrantica. I must admit, I don't love this on first impressions. It was quite strong, polarising in fact with no real discernible notes. I decided after 10 minutes to layer Arianne Grande's cloud on top which gave it some very needed sweetness. It actually layers really well with Cloud so I was pleasantly surprised. It made it so much more wearable to what was quite a sharp scent on my skin.
I really like this combo... I can't wear Le Bain on its own. People who described it as fresh.. what are you smelling?

NoulaS

If only this didn't have an aldehyde note.. I absolutely despise aldehydes. Bought this because it was supposed to be similar to Fève Délicieuse, but nope. All I can smell is somethong nice ruined by aldehydes 😂

SweetJhane

What a strange experience this perfume is. Smells like pipe tobacco, whiskey, and YSL L’Homme. More masculine than unisex. In the drydown, the tobacco lightens, the vanilla mixes with baby powder and something like pancake syrup. It’s feminine and pretty, even if it doesn’t sound like it. Only lasts around 3 hours, so it’s a short strange experience on me. I really don’t know what to think, but the tobacco-tinged, powdery sweetness of the last hour is really lovely. Maybe in a few months I’ll try again.

Eupatoria

What a great buy. I asked my husband what he thought of this perfume, and he said it ‘smells like money.’ The wet, aldehyde top note makes him thing of some rich relatives wearing Patou’s Joy. On a second sniff, he declared it smells like lilacs and potpourri.

I actually agree with his assessment (minus the lilacs part). It is very amber-y, aldehyde-y first. Then it opens up to resinous tonka bean. Decent projection and spillage, but still office-friendly. Great for the winter — I don’t think I would be reaching for this in warmer weather. And one can’t beat the price point.

rozberry

I haven't much useful to say about this fragrance unfortunately. I just wanted to chip in and say that on the two occasions I have sampled this in a store, I could not smell ANYTHING. nothing wrong with my nose on those days, I could smell everything else just fine. Le Bain literally smells of nothing to me. It is very strange. I would've hoped it would be love at first sniff since it was 100ml discounted to £9 in said store!!

sassistheword

Blind bought this, zero regrets...however am I the only one who gets a serious grandpa's pipe tobacco note?

Chemason1967

Treated the wife to this after seeing it advertised for £12 delivered (what a charmer), anyway it came while she was at work so I did the honourable thing and tested it. First sniff and I’m thinking Vanilla, Cherry, Tonka B.S I’m not getting any of that, second sniff after about 10 minutes and the Cherry note nearly blew my socks off, 30 minutes in and the Cherry is not as pronounced as the Vanilla and Tonka have kicked in. It’s a pleasant everyday scent, I’d say for ages 35+.

Will she like it, I doubt it but us men are born triers. 😘

dubdub

This was a successful blind buy. I can smell this milky baby powder cherry cola with milky vanilla ice cream. That's what i exactly get from this amazing fragrance very comforting, it also lasts long on me.

Tiger84

There is so much more to this than it seems, at least to the old version that lasts a long time. Sometimes it shows itself as a friendly vanilla, but more often the depth and complexity shines through, and balsamic, hot fiery boozy aspects jump at you. Mine is from before the reformulation around 2013-14, and it is a wonderfully warm, passionate winter scent.

Heliga

When I first bought this I was really disappointed, my main association was something like "farty old library smell". It was one of my earliest purchases, bought in my first haul. I didn't really know what tonka smelled like back then and expected much more of a pure vanilla, which this is definitely not. It started to grow on me really quickly, went form dislike to okay to like to love and has stayed there for years now. This is such a comforting scent, not at all exciting but really enjoyable to wear and perfectly balanced.

Serasmellsgood

A deep, boozy vanilla with an identity crisis. I tried so hard to like this but..... girl.

Admittedly, I blind-bought this scent and it's completely not my vibe as I'm more of a flowery fruity type. Spraying into the air opens with a dark rose scent which I liked, but on the skin, it just gets weirder and weirder. Rose fades to compliment vanilla, and the smoky amber comes in. but the way each note seems to fight for the spotlight ends up mellowing the entire scent. It leaves me confused. Entirely. After a while, it becomes generic powdery grandma. really interestingly devoid of a real top note.

One redeeming factor is that It layers beautifully with lighter fruity perfumes as it adds a sultriness via the amber-vanilla. once a decidedly feminine top note tells Ms. Le Bain Joop what to do, she plays her part.

This is supporting character energy, a follower. It leaves you wanting more, in the sense that it's lacking that "Je ne sais quoi", that X factor. She hasn't started that journey of finding herself yet, and maybe she's ok with that. I know I'm not.

villiruusut

Got this as a blind buy because the notes ticked many of the boxes that I enjoy in a perfume and have no regrets! It does remind me of a mall scent for some reason but evokes only pleasant memories. Strong on the alcohol in the opening but dries down into a powdery, comforting vanilla. A vanilla/tonka bomb tinged with cherry and tobacco.

SaraKa

I expected a cozy vanilla scent but this is le pain

DulyNoted

Bicycle tire?! What is wrong with my nose that the early notes are just like a tire. This was a blind buy. I guess I’m tuned into one of the ingredients . I wanted to like this so badly!

threevogels

I tried Joop Le Bain for the first time today. I just happened to have Bum Bum cream on my hands and really like the two together ❤️ Has anyone else tried the combination?

AllisonNW

I could see this being a bedtime scent in that it smells like baby powder or something comforting and just out of the shower clean, in a warm way. I don’t think I’d wear this out because it smells like a baby’s head, so that would be weird.

MakeupNeverSleeps

This was ahead of its time for being released in '89. In the dry down, I get a similar type of woody, resinous and rich vanilla as in Diptyque Eau Duelle. I totally get the references to TF Lost Cherry, with the almond note and cigar tone. It smells less powdery and more gourmand than I had imagined.

GracieGardener

A Powdery vanilla that is just so lovely. Reminds me of 80s toys, especially my cabbage patch doll, Marilyn. Not a bad thing! I really love this perfume. What a great find!
I would call this a non-sweet or not-too-sweet gourmand that is affordable and unique. Highly recommend for vanilla lovers and/or powder lovers.

Edit: I’m loving this in cooler weather. Yesterday Joop! Le Bain reminded me of hot chocolate with lots of powdery marshmallows! It seemed to last a lot longer on my skin too. As I am playing with this I’ve noticed something.... It doesn’t seem to layer well (on me) with scented body creams. In fact, I think this perfume holds its scent better on unmoisturized skin.

t1ney

On me this is a dead ringer for the smell of Johnson's baby powder. That's not a bad thing!

SmokeyLady

It was a blind buy. I agree with cherubi that it is weak and surprisingly it is stronger on skin (and I have dry skin). It is lovely fregrance, but at first I smell alcohol. Later it smells like (cocktail) cherries, which I like. Only if it were stronger. But now I would rather buy Lolita Lempicka Fleur Defendue if I want to smell cherries. I also got TF Lost Cherry as a gift and this is much nicer and cheap! So many mixed feelings!

Zhexe

Feminine, seductive and gentle at the same time. Smells like cherry liquor with a woody base to me. Very good longevity and discrete projection.

𝐔𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝟑𝟓$ 𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐭!
There are a few inexpensive fragrances that can blow most niches out of the park! This one is not far behind.
This is the fragrance that induced a spark in brands like Dior and Guerlain to create their legendary gourmands like Feve delicieuse and Tonka Imperial. A beautiful, creamy heliotropic take on tonka and vanillin, simple yet highly smooth! There isn't much to go in-depth here; keeping it short; just imagine a hug of tonka bean and vanilla delicately dusted with sandalwood powder, the delicate hug remains throughout the day.
A revolution in the world of modern perfumery, the initiator of gourmands.

I really like this at opening, starts strong, very different and my nose can’t quite get an understanding of what it’s smelling. Almond flavored black tea with lemon, bitter rind?

Ok, so now I smell harsh chemical bitter almonds with citrus, a spiciness, resins, barely any sweetness. It’s a sour bitter scent but I like it. Unlike anything else I’ve smelled.

Unfortunately it’s longevity and projection are absolutely terrible!

I sprayed 2x on skin and 5 minutes later it’s a skin scent(at least I can still smell it when I put my nose to my arm).

Surprisingly, on my cotton top it’s even worse, when it should be better. I sprayed 16 times on front and 16 times on back and within 10 minutes, absolutely no scent! Nothing!

Usually fabric holds scent very well. This is terribly disappointing and so strange.
Any ideas?

8/10 interesting scent
0/10 poorest longevity, projection. Would not repurchase.

Mariamaija Amélie

This may sound very strange considering the notes listed in this scent, but on my skin I get a wonderful mixture of dense cherry, vanilla and almond notes in the base. I really, REALLY like this one. JOOP! Le Bain is super unique and delicious to my nose, but it also confuses me a little bit, that I get cherry and almond since they aren't listed as notes anywhere. I just kept sniffing my wrist wondering what on Earth I was smelling 😊🍒

I think this is a moderate to colder weather scent for me personally, because it ends up so "thick" and sweet on my skin. It does smell slightly dated, I think, but in the most charming way 💕

gold2002

If you like aldehydes and synthetic soapy vanilla, it's an excellent purchase with 9/10 performance, particularly in the longevity department, I can smell it in my surroundings days after a few spritzes.

The first few hours of wearing will be heavily aldehydic and very synthetic smelling, but the dry down is when I feel this is a wearable perfume for anyone; a fresh and warm vanilla-amber. On clothes, it will always have that synthetic hint.

FirstSense

This classic vanilla fragrance from Joop! has a story for me. My GF had a 5 ml tester more than 30 years ago. She didn't like it but I kept on smelling and using the small bottle occasionally. I loved that cosy vanilla soap and white flower smell. It was also very strong and long lasting. So 30 years later I saw a discounted 75 ml Le Bain for under 20 Euro's. I ordered it and when it came I immediately sprayed on my arm. And yes, there it was, the same synthetic soapy flowery smell. In my perception it has changed a bit but I smelled the same DNA. A rich very almost just out of the bath smell that I like a lot. There is something very luring and comforting about Le Bain. It has character and the somewhat chemical smell especially in the first hour is not off-putting. And the dry down is a very nice soft sweet vanilla with a bit of brown sugar. This edition is not as strong as the original and I can imagine some people think this is a synthetic disaster but for me Le Bain is a great perfume with definitely a feminine smell. But these days that doesn't bother me at all. In fact, feminity is the new masculinity for me. I will not repurchase this one but will keep it for certain memories and use it occasionally but not very often.

Brooke1988

My journey with this fragrance surprised me. The opening had me regretting my purchase (even at the reasonable price point). To my nose it opens to a sharp, dry baby powder - almost headache-inducing). After it sits on my skin for about 10 minutes, this morphs into something that I've always wanted: a velvety smooth cherry cola with hints of rich vanilla and sweet tobacco. I am so used to fragrances opening beautifully and fading into something I don't enjoy, so I am grateful that this little beauty is the other way around! I'm really looking forward to wearing this on its own and layering this with some of my more vanilla-centric fragrances.

Colchiques

Oh yeah it smell like cherry tobacco and I can confirm it. When I was in the emergencies for nothing serious one of the nurse asked me if I was smoking amsterdamer tobacco ! And she meant that not in a bad way, she likes it. And I love it too. Very sweet and comforting. Don’t buy lost cherry by TF. Buy this.

Katy94

Joop Le Bein go me smells like Pi + cherries !
Very beautiful scent
It has the same vibe as Pi Givenchy but more feminine , sweet and cherry, something like Dr Pepper? Cherry Cola ? And vanilla

OnTheNose1982

I first discovered this perfume when watching a YouTube review of amazing cheapies. When I jumped on to fragrantica to check out the notes and saw that it was a woody vanilla, it felt like fate because I had been obsessing over finding exactly that.

I was so excited to try it when the bottle arrived and I was not disappointed. It’s a vanilla that isn’t heavy, cloying or too sweet. It’s airy without getting lost and soft but definitely not shy. It feels like an early summer day with the sun on my face. It doesn’t evolve too much on my skin, but I love that because I love what it smells like when I first put it on.

I have never smelled anything like it (I’ve smelled lots of perfumes and have a knack for placing scents and notes) so I can’t compare it to anything, but would say I am no longer sad that I can’t get Atelier Vanille Insensee in Canada, so it has replaced that woody vanilla for me.

This layers really well too - so far I have tried it with Absolute Bentley for men (my partners woody amber) and a sample of Schwarzlose Rausch and both have just added to the depth and longevity of this.

I would not have said this is a sexy perfume when I first smelled it, as it has a clean (not soapy!) quality as is suggested by the name. But my partner finds this really sexy on me because it sits close to the skin and so now by association I feel sexy when I wear it.

EllenaDsk

It's beautiful, very beautiful fragrance, but the opening is somehow too masculine for me. The drydown is soft, comfy, and enjoyable, though.

Annapanda

Coumarin bomb and not much else. Admittedly coumarin/tonka tend to dominate on my skin. After a while I can smell some «vanilla» and perhaps some florals too. Someone mentioned cherry liquor - I get that but think of it more as powdery bitter almond. I think it’s due to some not listed heliotropin. It’s nice enough. I wish the listed florals were stronger

amandavolpe

The best fragrances are the ones that manage to smell both clean and dirty. Soapy aldehydes, citrus, baby powder, maraschino cherries, rubbery vanilla, leather. This is gorgeous.

RonnieB

I hate this sooo much. Admittedly, I'm newer at "fragrancing" and I'm still figuring out what I like but this is a strong NO. There is one overwhelming note at the top that is so harsh and unpleasant (Amber? Aldehydes maybe?) This smells like tree bark, soil, some weird spices and it's very warm. I tend to like white florals and sweet fragrances so maybe that's why this is such a turnoff for me.

Phoenixpink80

This is gorgeous! So warm and comforting. I can detect Cherry, although it's not listed in the notes. There's a delicious jammy rose note and warm vanilla. I can see myself reaching for this a lot!

Madyana

This has now stood on my shelf for several seasons and calmed down into a very nice scent. I know I shouldn’t say that, but In my nose, this is reminiscent little bit to Amouage Sunshine with big scoop of cheap sherry liqueur.🙊

veda

This is a warm vanilla fragrance.
It is a fluffy perfume like a hug.
It is only for winter.

I wholeheartedly agree with reviewer under me! JOOP! Le Bain is a gem! Lovely warm vanilla, which I crave every day this winter 😁 At first I was worried about the aldehydes, but they are fleeting and actually pretty lovely in the opening of Le Bain. It is a perfume that blooms on your skin and it is a journey from top to dry down. It's not smelling vintage to me, just pure bliss.

Duft Liebe

You need this perfume in your collection. You may think - no, well.... But I tell you: Yes. It is so worth it! And you will be surprised, how often and easy you will reach for it. IT IS SO GOOD, so universal and still lovely in it´s own way. When you get it, it will always be there in the front row of your collection. You will always want to have it near by your hands. This little, unspectacular bottle. It will never make a statement, but it will make you very happy.

km1266

I heard that this smells like cherry vanilla tobacco and I had to get it. When I sniffed it, it was instant love 😍 it's jammy, buttery and soft. It mixes well with my chemistry, I have got a lot of compliments. Someone said "That perfume is very you".

The sillage is soft, but people notice it, hence the compliments. Longevity isn't amazing, but it's cheap and smells amazing, so who cares

ScentedPlaza

Creamy, soapy & fresh vanilla with a slight retro touch. Turns into balmy and warm amber. Used to be my moms perfume in the 90's, so this one is more like an "archiver object" to me.

zhetheru

I was looking for a scent that could replace Gaultier 2. Gaultier 2 is almost extinct and the bottles that I have been finding are overpriced. I read that this is a quality replacement so I found a bottle and ordered it. Oh my gosh! I did not think that I would like it because of the price point. I thought it was going to smell cheap, but this is better than Gaultier 2 in my opinion. Gaultier 2 has a sweet amber, vanilla, smell that dries down to the scent of a plastic doll head or burning plastic when over-sprayed. If over-sprayed that note is disgusting and headache-inducing. However, Joop does not have that note. Instead, all I pick up from Joop is vanilla, amber, a white flower is attempting to peek through with a bit of citrus in the background. Joop! Le Bain is divine. I heard that Joop! will no longer be selling fragrances in North America so I will be stocking up on this. I am so happy that I went with Joop! instead of Gaultier 2.

p.s. don't overspray too much, the sillage on this can be monstrous.

derby2169

Quite aldehydic in the opening, fizzy, slightly soapy. Underneath sweet florals, not very realistic but veer towards rose and jasmine in an abstract sense, if you have tried oriental pastries sprinkled with rose water, you very much get a powdery floral syrup here. This sets a clear feminine tone to me. This floral tone is coated in a smooth milky, powdery woody note, along the lines of sandalwood. Vanilla patchouli come through later on blended nicely with amber facets. The woody vanillic elements smell a little nutty to me, like hazelnut.

I'm smelling a vintage bottle that was given to me more than a decade ago, which are still available online and not that pricey. No masterpiece by any stretch, but quite tasteful, leans feminine, decent performance, cold weather day scent worthy.

alwaysalready

This is sweet and a little powdery? There is something about it that makes me think of rose lattes, I think the floral notes mixed with the syrupy scent. I wish more of the citrus came out on my skin but it is still somehow fresh, not cloying! Over time this becomes a soft amber.

TaniaClamp

I fell in love right away. First spritz I smell a mix of tonka/vanilla syrupy-ness, very strong though. Then some warm amber fuzzyness emerges with a kind of spa-like effect, I´m in heaven! It´s such an incredible scent and a must have in my collection.

musicformer

I got an very old 75 ml vintage bottle for 70 Euro and also tested the current formulation. The vintage smells wonderful from the beginning to the end, warm and soft, but not weak. It's not a beast mode fragrance, but for several hours it's always present and caresses the nose. The current formulation also smells good, but more synthetic and the performance is "different". For the current cheap prices it's fine, but I prefer the vintage.

Templeton

Once the fruit dominated opening settles down, the fusion of sweet citrus with spicy vanilla brings a reminiscence of confectionary pipe tobacco.
Which is lovely.
Late dry down is powdery-spicy, which is also gorgeous.
Although not mentioned in the notes, to my nose the combination of vanilla and light florals suggests heliotrope.
Le Bain is a good name for this, as it really gives the sense of relaxation and cosiness you get from a lovely warm bath.
Screw being a "real" guy, one sniff of this and I'm ready to deploy the bath bombs.
Just smear a little Vaseline on that lens would you?

mirrorghost

this one is interesting. it starts with amber, woods and citruses along with some sweetness from the tonka. it seems so familiar to something but i can't place it. i find this subtle, cozy and calming, much like a bath. perfect name for it.

lenakles

Don’t love the opening, it’s a strange warm citrus vibe going on. But the dry down is delicious, so it’s kind of worth the wait.

sondermelon

This is an everyday wearable scent to me! It seems fitting for most occasions. The light vanilla creaminess is something pretty subtle when sprayed on clothes, smells very rich but not upsetting after a while. On skin, I expected a lot more vanilla and the other sweet notes, but my skin is funky as always and the amber/musk notes overshadowed the vanilla for me. It made me kind of sad since I wanted something super vanilla and sweet, but it does smell nice. Perhaps the oncoming spring and summer seasons will change my skin chemistry a bit so the vanilla comes out more! Until then, Le Bain is relegated to being a clothes-only perfume to maximize the vanilla.

MoonScent

Le bain vs. Tardes vs. What We Do In Paris Is Secret A Lab on Fire (wwdipis) :

In short le brain is closer to wwdipis than Trades in scent and in femininity. It does preform as good as wwdipis or better. You might buy it as a substitute to wwdipis.
Le bain starts with a synthetic, dry, doll scent. Dominated by aldehydes. It ends up very similar to wwdipis, creamy, sweet and feminine.
It is a comforting scent, a bit old days. I really like the dry down.
I love Tardes. Unfortunetaly le bain does not satisfy my crave to Tardes.

Cheers,

Edit: I did let my partner use both the joop and Tardes this summer. I most say that in the air they are very similar. I prefer a little bit better the tardes. Even I had problems distinguishing between the two. That really made me rethink my purchase of carner. However on me I prefer Tardes by far. I enjoy it and it gives me a huge joy. In the other hand joop does not please me so much on me.

Hope this will help you.
Cheers.

vanillamoss

NOW I see what the fragrance community has been going on about! Right off the bat I get something that smells like an exotic dessert -- delicious, but not sugary sweet like a lot of mall gourmands are. It's like rum, rice pudding, and dates. It's also weirdly lightweight and clean, which is amazing for a gourmand because sometimes they can be a little nauseating.

SailorV

Le Bain was ahead of its time! I really think this could have been released yesterday and no one would have raised an eyebrow. It's not your typical 80s fragrance at all. It's intense like many of them are (though older versions must have surely been even stronger), but due to the heavy dose of tonka it fits right in with today's gourmands.
It opens with a juicy and even a little boozy cherry almond scent. It's warm and balsamic at that, but the cleanliness of orange blossom and some light soapy aldehydes make it fit to its name. As it dries down the cherry vibe and soapiness vanish, at this point it's mainly vanilla, amber and heaps of almondy tonka.
Contrary to some modern tonka fragrances this never goes into the more masculine spicy/aromatic direction and also doesn't have that strong synthetic creamy base found in many of them. It's more balsamic and ambery, but mostly very powdery. While Le Bain is definitely a sweet and warm scent, there are enough balancing notes to not let it turn cloying.
It's a simple, but beautiful composition. Very cozy and sensual. And dirt cheap nowadays. The bottle might look dated and boring, but don't let that deter you. I would recommend this to anyone who likes tonka and cherry notes, the dichotomy of warm amber and clean orange blossom in Jean Paul Gaultier's Classique line or any perfume with the word 'Loukhoum' in its name. This oldie could be a great surprise for people who aren't hardcore vintage fans.

fleader

This one surprised me. I thought it was going to be more gourmand based on the notes but it's not, though it's very balsamic, it's still very clean and somewhat powdery. I worried it would fall into the old lady category.... and I love many old lady scents, but I'm definitely more careful about when I wear them... I probably won't wear one if I want to be sexy! Yet when I wore this to the grocery store I had a man come up to me and tell me I smelled nice, and I have gotten several compliments since... My worries were unwarranted!

It’s clean but in a warm hearted way, not in a bloodless way. It doesn’t try to be sexy or luxurious, it’s welcoming and unpretentious. Still it is something that stands out from the pack, because not many fragrances are content to aim to be welcoming.

Wwoman

This is an interesting combination of amber and aldehydes when first sprayed, but it also becomes a bit powdery as it dries down. I see that vanilla and tonka are listed as prominent notes, but I'm fairly sensitive to those and I don't actually get a huge amount of these in the dry down. The final scent is a nice contrast between warmer amber/vanillic notes and cooler aldehyde/fresh floral notes. However, while its sillage is okay, it doesn't seem to have much lasting power on me. I can certainly see why this is a favorite for a lot of people, but it's not quite what I'm looking for when considering buying a bottle.

LAboy scent expert

Well it smells similar to CD Feve delicious .. or CD smells similar to this , in a less potent way but it does . Interesting

bittersweetpoison

Beautiful! I’ve been eyeing this one for a while because I saw people comparing it with JPG 2, which is my signature scent. I understand why, since both are thick and sweet scents, but Joop is not as loud! It smells great - tonka, amber, jasmine and some aldehydes is what I get on my skin. It’s sweet, but blended so beautifully! I can’t believe I paid £20 for a large bottle! Great winter scent - it’s cosy, warm and resinous, and smells much more expensive on me than what I paid for!

KellieLambert56

Rich! Super rich! This one was a gifted beauty. An unexpected gift on last date from my boyfriend. The minute I received it, I tried it and it was so amber, thick, resinous and sweet on my skin while maintaining the warmth. The silage is strong and the longevity is long lasting for this amazing beauty. This is fit for winter, fall and cold nights and even on cold, rainy and spring days round the year. There is tonka, musk, sandalwood, patchouli and bergamot along with some aldehydes. As per me this fall in category of winter scent that is not purely gourmand but also have flowers, tonka beans and other superb notes to play in. Thankyou Joop for such an incredible scent that was instant love for me. One because of the fragrance that is super rich and two, because my boyfriend gifted me this. There is booziness, smoothness and a perfect balance of vanilla and balsam in it. I am in love with it. Love, lots of love Joop for such a beauty!

GloriaFlo

Love this one, when the dry down starts and settles on your skin, this is niche you guys. I love it, for the quality I am getting at this price, I don't see myself without a bottle (or 2) of Joop! Le Bain in my collection. I kid you not! BTW I blind bought it and am supper happy. Don't be afraid to try it out.

Aromantra

I believe the upside-down structure of this fragrance is what's causing all the mixed reactions. Here is my personal breakdown as sprayed on skin (I'll get to paper strips at the end*):

1. On skin, Le Bain delivers the base notes right away. I mean immediately! Therefore, the first 5-10 minutes can be overwhelming. You get an initial dose of medicinal boozy Tonka/Vanilla syrupy-ness. It almost smells like synthetic honey for a minute. Pleasant, but very strong.

2. After the initial heady blast, a warm amber fuzzyness emerges, rounding out the sharp sweetness. Nice!

3. 20 minutes on the skin, you get the spa-like effect of the namesake. An aldehydic wax candle scent appears. Le Bain indeed... This is the core of the fragrance. But still, no florals at this point.

4. Finally, the dry down delivers the cedar/sandalwood and lastly the rose & jasmine peek through, making the whole thing smell clean, cozy and lush. Beautiful and worth the wait.

So, when it comes to testing on paper strips, an entirely different thing happens, you get citrus-powder-florals instantly! How bizarre! It's as if the base notes only truly develop on skin. Le Bain is a lovely comfort scent and I am very fond of it - however I can see how it can be polarizing depending on where/how it is applied. Please give it a chance and allow it to go through its stages before judging :)

VelvetTrance

Play-doh for days. I normally love a yummy, cozy vanilla fragrance but with this one I can't get past the Play-doh.

sopelka

I was looking forward to trying Joop! Le Bain but was disappointed by the overwhelming artificial vanilla that dominates all other notes. There are no florals or woods to counter-balance the vanilla, it just keeps going. It’s amazing that the list of notes is almost the same as in my beloved Joop! Femme, but the result is so different.

UPDATE: well, the joke is on me! I love it now! What happened that I sense Le Bain so differently, I don’t know. Perhaps colder weather, or the fact that I am getting deeper into the strong amber scents these days, but I finally understand why it’s called Le Bain! Now, it is a lot more spa-like, calmer and airier, the lovely almond or cherry stone note is very pleasing to my nose.

The heaviest almost suffocating vanilla I've ever smelled. And as this is not enough a not even medium quality patchouli follows. Everything else is drowned. It made me cough and I couldn't wash it off.

babydoe

A quite enchanting and complex fragrance, but this perfume has enough reviews. I only want to add that it wears very close to the skin (could be a body chemistry thing I suppose). I ended up getting rid of it because although I loved the fragrance, I could barely smell it on myself. If there was a stronger version of this I would snatch it up in a heartbeat.

Banaanamok

I'm a big fan of Joop le Bain, a fragrance you can easily mix with other fragrances. It struck me the last time I was shopping and smelled Lost Cherry by Tom Ford that they reminded of each other. I luckily had Le bain in my bag, sprayed them on each arm, they were surprisingly almost identical.
If you can not afford Lost Cherry Tom Ford, Le Bain is a good alternative.

J'adore ♥ ! I came to a sample accidentally through our neighbour, I got it together with Chopard Cashmere. It was 20 years ago???
Now I got a 75 ml bottle of discounted tester for little money ♥ For me, it is a very underestimated perfume. It is one of those scents, which are blended so well, that you cannot tell what is in there. It reminds me of high-end perfumes in terms of quality. It just lingers and lingers and leaves trail (yayy!). I definitely feel a yummy bourbon vanilla, not overly sweet, a bit spicey - I guess it is that tonka bean (?) Like you have a delicious vanilla pudding poured with cinnamon or cardamom. Or allspice (pimento). Now that I read the notes, yes, I could pick up the orange blossom, lily-of-the-valley, cedar, amber. Otherwise I wouldn't know. It is just fantastically, delicately blended. It is sweet, feminine, warm, wrapping, hugging. I could wear it in hot summer like a silk dress, or in the winter as a cashmere scarf.

I’m not sure about this one - I’ve had it for a few years now but when I come to review it I can’t make my mind up on how I feel about it. Some days I get enveloped in that sweet spa/traditional powdery bath scent but other days I smell beer breath and straight up aldehydes. Yep - still undecided…this evening I smell spa.

What a pitty!
After reading tons of reviews of this cute eau de parfum, I ordered it. Today I had received it, so I decided to test this perfume. When I sprayed it on my skin, a very strong medicinal scent came upon me. At that moment I kind of started panicking, but I decided to give it a chance to really 'sink' into my skin. After 10 minutes I smelled it again, and boy oh boy. I really just don't like it, it smells kinda cheap, medicinal and it's really sharp (strong). It gives me headaches. But I must give this perfume credit for its longevity, it really does last a long time on my skin. Really sad that I don't like it because I'm usually very fond of Vanilla and woody scents. But this really ain't it!
Guess I'll stick to my lovely and mild Cerruti 1881.

For those who recall the days of pantyhose, for me this is the perfume equivalent of the pantyhose that, with the right color, brand, and shoes, looks like your legs instead of a pair of pantyhose.

I think it can be fun at home, but see this as good fit for environments and situations where you aren’t really “supposed” to wear perfume but still want to, Ie certain work/client scenarios, dr appts, etc….. I mean, other people could probably interpret this, if they can smell it, as coming from lotion or something light.

I also live in urban area where getting anywhere in first place will chew through a scent, a pair of shoes, what-have-you like you’re in decathlon training. If you’re driving five minutes down the road to church, your experience might be different.

Seems usually the softer scents are so flimsy or sweet or something else. This really is warm and light but still has some layers. I also get the doll head reference, but that honeyed, creamy light amaretto, fresh-bathed baby yet appropriate for an adult is where I mostly settle on this.

Update: I have a little sample of Creed White Amber that also has cozy bath vibe but is kinda weak. I put a little on top of my Le Bain, and the sorta fruit or citrus was fun for a minute, and they mixed well, though the WA is relatively “small”.

Anyway, after that, walked outside my apt door into hallway that has no a/c or air circulation….. stood there for a min futzing with some things before going down to get mail. Came back, and when I got to my door, suddenly thought, “Man, something smells absolutely fabulous!”. I even got a teeny hint of a light white floral I don’t much get on myself with Le Bain. Then I thought, “Could that be me? From like three minutes ago?” Hmmmm, I’d like to think maybe so! Man, if that’s what I smell like to others? Then I smell fantastic! Makes me wanna smack my hands together in that “mission accomplished” kind of way. I mostly wear perfume for my own self, several motivations behind that, and I just hope that nothing offends anyone else or that they might like it. But I never really know. This made me think I might be threading that needle.
I also get on an elevator literally every day. A small one. 😬

StinkyTinky

I had seen a review of this on YouTube, I believe it was delicious delights who enjoyed this scent. For the price I knew I could make a blind buy without regret. I purchased it fairly early in my fragrance journey so I’m curious if my impression would be different. I’ve since given it away.
For some odd reason, I got half warm musk clean out of the shower. Not in the soapy sense, just in the “I smell fresh” sense. But on my skin it also pulled a faint hint of cigar. Longevity is good, projection is more intimate.
For what it’s worth, I gifted my bottle to my step father, and it smells great on him. Just wasn’t for me…

RainbowBrite

On me this is a very comforting sweet vanilla almond with a touch of baby powder. The orange blossom is very soft and creamy, it reminds me of french baby products. A very clean, dreamy and innocent scent.

A good cheapy and a very safe blind buy. A nice weekend casual scent. Good for family time. Not really a date night scent to me and a bit too sweet for very hot weather.

mariedennis

A late 80’s early 90’s time capsule at first whiff. Think Bijan. In 2021, it can be a cozy winter fragrance if sprayed very lightly. Will be nauseating in any other season or if over-sprayed.

Guccibaby46

First off let me just say I have never been a fan of the whole joop thing. I will forever remember the joop homme phenomenon of the early nineties when every late teen early twenties guy smelled of the stuff, to me it has that awful fruity smell mixed with b.o thing going on. Back to joop le’bain after reading some of the reviews on here I was curious, it has a lot of the notes I like, so I ordered a bottle, it was really cheap so figured if it was a no it wasn’t the end of the world. It really isn’t half bad, the opening is the best to me, creamy almond a bit like bake well tart, the amber, sandalwood and orange blossom are the dominant players. As the dry down happens you do get the joop DNA sweaty b.o smell I suspect from the musk, not as prominent as in homme. Overall it’s a lovely sweet soft comforting scent, not challenging or mind blowing it’s a hug in a bottle.

poppymae83

This was a blind buy for me after seeing it on sale, not the greatest fan as I was expecting more vanilla than the Amber and almond that are definitely the strongest scents. First spray for me smells like really strong cheap amaretto then the dry down mellows down into a more sweet scent.

aaf5

at first i was unsettled by this perfume smelling it straight from the bottle, because it reminded me of like... vintage dolls, floral upholstery, ashtrays, and generally the home of an elderly woman, particularly one i knew as a child. i was somewhat troubled by the fact that i had no idea what to do with it.
then i actually sprayed it and it changed quite a bit. the weird bottle scent is only there if you smell closely on the paper, and i'm assuming it would be even less on the skin. (haven't worn it yet because of the season, but maybe i'll test it soon). it becomes rather sophisticated and i think it's because the fresher notes come forward more. the main things i smell are vanilla, amber, sandalwood, and i think some musk... the other notes i can't pick out individually but i think they combine to add a slight sharpness to an otherwise warm almost oriental scent. i also kind of sense some non-bitter booziness though that's not mentioned.
it's still not my favorite smell in the world; i think it's a little too vintage for my taste, but we'll see if i change my mind - i already like it more than i did on first sniff.

Alice...LikeWonderland

On me I get an artificial vanilla, a vague floral and some kind of musk. It's mostly warm and soft but I wouldn't describe it as 'fresh' in that it doesn't seem soapy or like clean laundry. It reminds me of something one of my aunts used to wear in the early 80s probably from Avon. It's pleasant (other than something that gives me toilet spray vibes in the first few minutes) but not what I want to smell like. However Chloé and Sì both smell like garbage on me while I find them lovely on others so your results with Le Bain may be different ✨

If you live in Australia and would like to try this please send me a message and I would be happy to send you the bottle rather than see it go to waste x

Eau de Hanneli

My cosy, after bath, bedtime snuggle scent. I have heard it described as a solar fragrance and I get this. To me it smells like the warmth of the sun, not the heat, not the scorching rays, not literally, but like the warmth of the sun. Perhaps filtered through fluffy clouds onto a meadow, a comforting scent. Notes of buttery soft almond and flora, with a clean post bath radiance.

labonvie

A fresh, clean, just out of the bath baby, a sweetish powdery suggestion of baby lotion and amaretto. Truly lovely.

Dissolved_Mind

What an interesting and pleasant scent! Based on the notes, I expected something completely different. I honestly don't even know how to describe it. I feel like I can smell some berries or fruits, but they are not listed here. It smells like some kind of a compote with Dior Poison vibes. A little vintage, but not really vintage. Sweet but not overly sweet. Light but with some depth. While it's not amazing and doesn't have a wow effect, it's a fun experience.
Edit: my boyfriend said it smells like honey. And I very much agree with him, it really does smell like honey! His one word description of the scent makes much more sense than mine haha

forêt

How is it that this is identical to What We Do In Pais Is Secret but appears to have been created with different notes? How do I not smell any aldehydes? And how is it that Dominique Ropion created WWDIPIS, essentially copying this one, when he is a super genius? I am so confused.. nevertheless I love this perfume; it is one of my favorites and I often get compliments when I wear it.

natalia6032

The sandalwood is very prominent in this, and I think it's what other reviewers might be identifying as cherry or almond. It does have a slight medicinal tinge, especially in the opening, which slowly dries down to a very mellow, elegant vanilla. Something about it reminds me of Guerlain, the quality doesn't match the price here- it smells way more expensive than it is. A successful blind buy for me, although I have to admit I prefer the dry down to the opening.

Skinterpreter

This smells quite nice, to me it smells exactly like sweet plum compote, nothing more, nothing less. :) It's a nice, fruity, sweet scent. The longevity and sillage are great, at least based on my experience.

johnjubal1958

I really like this fragrance because it has a lot going for it. It smells wonderful from start to finish. The price is very inexpensive for a scent of this quality. Joop has pulled out some excellent fragrances over the years and this is one of their earliest ones which would have been a hard act to follow. However, they have produced the goods and La Bain was a super example to lead the way. A seriously excellent fragrance that does not burn a hole in your pocket. A 8.75 all the way for me. I told you, "I really love La Bain" 👍👌😁!!!

indiglo

I regret I can't stop thinking of cherry pipe tobacco with this one, mentioned below by at least one other person. I wish I could - the tobacco connection leans negative for me.

Deviedawl

Le Bain isn't the bath. It's the bath toy. A loved rubber ducky or a Sophie the Giraffe teething toy. So cozy.

Vanilla without being saccharine vanilla. Anchored by deep amber, tonka and maybe even tobacco. It's giving me a little bit of a Stila 'Creme Bouquet' vibe.

Sits close to the skin, but while sitting in a hot car, it started to expand into the air a bit more. Interested to see what this does in the summer. If my boyfriend wore this, you'd have to pry me away from his neck. A serious snuggle scent.

I can already tell I will be buying a back up bottle.

opoponax

ALL YEAR ROUND - TREASURE!!!

"Le Bain" - a friend of mine described it as "it's like you took a bath in the Rococo period, in a marble tub with gold gilded tiles" - How poetic is that!

I am absolutely in Love with this gem - it's perfect! I think it's just as good for summer as it is for winter.
Very easy to wear - it has a very soft sweet quality, slightly balsamic and powdery - beautiful vanilla.

So Addictive - I just can't stop smelling it.
Already ordered a replacement for when I run out.

Kumquanista

Blind buy. For the person who is hoping this smells like Gaultier2. It does not. Am not a fan. For me it smells as cheap as it is and don’t get the hype. Sorry, this is my honest opinion.

Few days ago, my dear neighbour stopped me with a question:
- Where did you get that perfume you gave me? I need more!

You see, I'm one of those perfumeholics, yes that's a word, who buys perfume when she is compensating or just because.
Le Bain was lovely but it didn't work for me so I gave it to her. Frankly, when you get to enjoy those perfumes on others, like after they walked through the hallway, you dont feel generous, just smug. Anyway, she is not a perfume addict, just a lady who's boyfriend was very vocal and enthusiastic about perfume she was wearing. The way she mimicked his behaviour and antics was hilarious.
I might buy it again just to keep her happy and, apparently, thoroughly satisfied.

Such a pity we cannot indicate Colle Cléopâtre in the 'This perfume reminds me of' Section.

Throwback to school when we collectively were sniffing this iconic little pot of almond paste glue until the little spatula that came with it either got lodged in a nostril or stuck to our faces.

Just for that smemory by itself already: like!

TwoPetals

This fragrance is so good. As I keep sniffing my wrist and the outside of my arm, I get whiffs of aroma similar to the notes of Molecule 01. I smell amber, incense, nectary sweetness, powdery fluffiness. Unbelievable scent. I also got Joop! after watching Sebastian and Dana video on YouTube. It's not the first fragrance I get after their reviews, I adore their channels. I will definitely stock up on this beauty.

kassinator

So many have written loving reviews. Sonnets, if you will, as this fragrance is 100% as beautiful as everyone says it is. I also heard about this from YouTube while watching the video on Sebastian’s channel where he and Dana recommend their favorite cheapies. (I LOVE their videos together). I blind bought this on the spot after her description and his love once he smelled it. I love everything about this. It smells warm, clean, sweet, vanilla, almond/cherry/tonka, with a hint of white musk. It’s hard to put in words, but it does smell like someone who has just taken a bath using the most beautiful oils and soap. This is a glorious vanilla with light warm florals that are so far in the background they add nuance to the vanilla, but are unidentifiable as a flower (to my nose). I also love the bottle and the box. It very much reminds me of my youth. It looks like a bigger bottle is in order! I never want to be without this.

chorando

A beautiful Illusion of powdery Nerium Oleander. Le Bain has a soft powdery floral sweetness with Amber and sandalwood. Whilst seemingly simple in execution Le Bain is a mood enhancer that conjures images of one of the Mediterraneans most prolific flowers. With a pollen like sweetness coupled with a white floral and Almond notes I would find it hard to believe that anyone would be turned off by this happy and cosy blend. Genderless and joyful Le Bain is a gem of a fragrance that suits cosy nights in and warm summer days with equal aplomb. Think summer sultry rather than citrus freshness, days where the heat causes the flowers to release their narcotic fragrance into the air. Much better than its cost would suggest, Le Bain is a beauty.

EMIV

Bought it after reading all of these reviews.
It is addictive, I really want to snuggle up to this scent. Being alone, wearing it on myself, this was a little problematic.
Made me miss someone I used to cuddle up to, even though I know he didn't wear this fragrance. Perhaps I'll gift it.

There likely is some stonefruit in it (cherry/almond-ish scent, could also be peach?), having an allergy to it, and getting that familiar tingly feeling in my nose when sniffing it, as well as needing to sneeze when wearing it.
I might double check later, but it seems very likely with how often others mentioned it, and I don't really want to have sneezing attacks rn. Would have liked if they had listed stonefruit if this is the case, since I'm pretty allergic to it.

Anyways, this is a simple, but incredibly sexy fragrance (which is a term I don't use lightly, in fact, I rarely use it at all). If I gift it, I'll have to be careful to who ':)

For people who wear the fragrance themselves, try layering it with a honey note(I used demeters oil). It is insanely delicious.

PureLight78

I was very surprised by this one. What a great fragrance for the money! Le Bain is a soft oriental vanilla with a rich creamy sandalwood base. A beautifully blended warm, clean, cosy and fluffy scent that is just right for lockdown good feels. Perfect for winter and autumn days, and spring nights. Or, I guess as the name suggests, after your evening bath!

Despite the long list of notes, this is a vanilla fragrance with amber and sandalwood, and a touch of floral sweetness. Yummy! Slightly reminiscent in the dry down to Sunset Riot by All Saints due to orange blossom, and amber/sandalwood and patchouli notes, without Sunsets Riots slight medical opening. Yet to test longevity...

Pantspockets

This has no business smelling this good. It's soft, yummy, comforting, but not too sweet. I can see someone becoming obsessed with a person who wears it. It makes you very slightly hungry for a frangipane danish. They could easily have named it "Crave."

perfumesniffer

Joop! Le Bain! smells to me like a really nice person. Someone who is kind, genuine and caring and you enjoy being around. You are safe, and things are easy-going.

Joop! Le Bain definitely smells like a freshly bathed baby (as someone wrote below). It's mostly a fresh and slightly effervescent tonka bean vanilla on me. I don't get obvious florals at all. It does make me think of a bath, a bubble bath with candles. I never smelled this when I was a kid, in 1989. I have no associations with this fragrance from long ago. It does not smell dated to me at all. It definitely smells modern and utterly wearable for literally any occasion. It is so comforting. For the $20 it cost me, I daresay it's an amazing find!

Mystères du Château de Dé

Noses sure do vary! Le Bain is not a warm fragrance in my nose. It's a flanker to Joop! Homme. And white flowers are often cool. This is soft, silky, limpid and watery. It's called Le Bain, guys. No, it's not a hot bath. It's has the smell of aromatherapy in a luxury hotel's spa. It could be a candle or an essential oil diffuser. I appreciate the votes on Fragrantica that find Mugler in this, and LouLou.

thatsperf

This fragrance smells like a freshly washed baby in his/her freshly laundered clothes. Sleeping soundly in the cot.
I can smell clean laundry with none of the synthetic 'sharpness' that comes with it. It comes out as clean laundry/freshly washed skin together with powdery soft cherry vanilla whiff. Vanilla is the dominant note but it's like a whisper. This won't knock you to the floor.
Unfortunately, projection is intimate and the longevity is under 2 hours on my skin. So frequent spraying is unavoidable!
It's suits everyday wear and in the office. This fragrance is unisex and will smell great on males and females. Also great for all ages and can be worn by anyone young or old. It's cheap to purchase online. A perfect first perfume for young people interested in fragrances.

KayleeAp

What a lovely little surprise this one is, especially for the price. I get a warm comforting feeling from this, it has some vanilla, and something a little fresh about it too that I can't quite pinpoint. Heliotrope isn't listed but I definitely smell that in the top. I recommend this one!

Herestoshuttingup

I never, ever thought I could enjoy a Joop! fragrance. I was wrong and I am so glad I gave this a try. To me this smells like clean skin spritzed with a tiny bit of vanilla and amber. It's like someone bathed with fancy soap with notes of LOTV and citrus and then put on a scarf that had vanilla musk lingering on it from a perfume worn in weeks past. Fresh, fuzzy, cozy, a bit sweet, and warm.

Madyana

In this scent, synthetic, almost cherry-scented vanilla has been successfully combined with a very natural lemon! Lemon is just so sweet that is not a "toilet freshener ", but a lovely lemon jam where you can smell tobacco too.
The result is polarizing, interesting and intoxicating.
Many cheap vanillas are tried to hide in other notes, but this one explodes with honesty straight into heart!
This is a beast, in a good way.😘

alphairone

Joop! Le Bain manages to be both the cheapie of the century and the unisex of the century.

The opening reminds me of the smell when opening one of the loose tobacco jars at Leavitt & Peirce, the legendary tobacconist in Harvard Sq, Cambridge, MA. It especially reminds of inhaling the aromatic, sweet, somewhat sweet aroma of cherry tobacco. One of my favorite smells in the world. Le Bain somehow captures this better than many actual tobacco frags out there.

As the top dries down, the florals, primarily orange blossom and jasmine, start to bloom on the skin, reminding the wearer that this in fact unisex, but not necessarily feminine. I also detect heliotropin, though heliotrope, like the tobacco, is not a listed note. Then there's the vanilla, which smells surprisingly sumptuous and isn't cloying at all. It contrasts with an oddly cellophane or plastic doll-head scent that somehow works in contributing to the allure of this fragrance (go figure, it is a cheapie after all). The dry down is a snuggly and warm skin scent, just right for a cold January day such as this.

Just as with Joop! Femme, Le Bain actually smells more masculine and well-blended than the house's big hit Homme. Other beauties from Joop! seem to be lost in the shadows of Homme and are much more deserving of praise and attention.

A big love.

Edithlyria

This is a scent from my childhood that has always awed me. A comfort scent of pure coziness. A mug of hot tea, snuggling in a soft blanket on the wooden veranda, watching the sunset, while the first fireflies start coming out. It radiates such warmth, it actually warms me up physically.
What I want to say is I love this scent.
Sweet, sweet tonka bean, precious woods and spices, and liquified sunlight, and also a distinct note of artificialness, which I like in small doses, weirdly enough.

fangpili

The scent of warm vanilla-bitter almond-cherry bakewells with a faint waft of sweet cigar smoke drifting through the door. Nevertheless, this very soon smells quite a linear medicinal vanilla and very ''safe''. I get the base notes straight away, mainly tonka, vanilla and the unpleasant ''bug spray'' or Sudocrem medicinal tone others mention. Actually Sudocrem or bitter almond play doh is probably the best overall description. It's unisex and one to wear with PJs and a book, it is a comfort scent, very slightly cloying until dry down, not a sensual one. It reads as a cold autumn or winter day perfume to me. I do keep checking to see if it develops and it's interesting in tempting you to do that but I don't think this will be up there as a great buy. I would like to see what this smells like on a man as I think this could work better. The bottle is unpretentious and I guess so is the person who often wears this.

Ferra_Verto

Beauty! Warm and inviting; rich vanilla, tonka, amber, sandalwood, and very fragrant orange blossom. It really encapsulates a warm summer day whilst on holiday in paradise; a gentle breeze blowing, rays beaming down on your body, the scent of perfumed skin and hair mingling delightfully with each other. This scent doesn't get nearly enough credit, and I guarantee if it bore the helm of a major design/perfume house (Amouage, TF, YSL, PdM, etc.), it would be a world-wide hit.

star~kitty

Baby powder, baby lotion, and baby ointment (like desitin). What you’ve got here is a freshly washed and bundled baby. I’m hoping for a little evolution; I just sprayed it.

30 minutes in: okay! I smell some sweetness rising up from this baby. Slightly cherry, slightly nutty. Interesting.

2 hours: this is a really lovely vanilla with a twist! I like it a lot.

discoqueen

It's very weird to smell this fragrance after reading all the raving reviews. For me this is a pretty heavy sweet winter scent. I expected something more light and transparent. There's a strong honey note in the middle notes that is not present in the description, also I don't get any of the citruses in the top notes, it goes directly into the sweet side. It's a very recognizable perfume, very warm and stays on forever. I got a someone asking me if I was wearing Arden Red door if that's a hint of how it smells to others. It's not too vintage smelling, not to flowery or powdery, but it's definitely strong and warm.

JSpines

This is really lovely and honestly, I can't imagine someone not liking it. It's soft and gentle and literally hugs you with it's comforting essence. Blended to perfection, I can smell a slightly sweet, slightly spicy, slightly powdery concoction but nothing in here is "too much." It's tame and well behaved and is content with being simple and beautiful.

What I get from this is a smooth vanilla with a touch of woodiness, a touch of patchouli and a touch of warm amber. The citrus only exists in the beginning and I feel as though it helps to keep the overall effect of the fragrance fresh and bright. I can't detect the orange blossom, jasmine or Lily-of-the-Valley at all and that's fine with me!

I knew that this fragrance had favourable reviews and I can see why. Mass appealing due to it's inoffensive nature, making it a bonafide crowd-pleaser.

It's near impossible to over-spray this one. My skin holds fragrance very well and even I did 5 sprays, which I would never do with any other fragrance for fear of choking myself out or others around me.

I love this scent. Such a bargain too. Very moderately priced. One of the best blind-buys I've ever made! A true gem!

middle25

I adore this. It's the day after and I can still smell it lingering on my skin, a little more on my jacket. When I first spray it, I get almond and just a touch of the orange blossom and sandalwood, then the vanilla and tonka bean come in - smooth, warm, slightly powdery. I'm surprised this was borne of the 80's, albeit the late 80's (1989), it doesn't remind me of many of that decade's perfumes. I blind-bought this after someone reviewed it as a perfume that should be in one's basic collection and I'm so glad I did. This is one of my go-to's: good for layering, comfortable, versatile. I think it leans feminine but a man could surely wear it and as I said, the longevity is great, sillage moderate. This one makes me happy every time I spray it, any time of the day, any day of the year.

binthadifa

Received it today. The opening is very similar to Yves Rocher's Shafali. The drydown is reminding me of another fume, but can't pinpoint which one. Can't judge the longevity, but it is quite strong after one spray. It reminds me of 90's perfumes so it suits its time when it came out. It was a blind buy, based on reviews here but also on youtube. 16 euros in Holland, 40ml edp + shower gel. Love it, will wear it. In my opinion, it doen't smell cheap.

It slightly reminds me of the beautiful discontinued Mystery, Naomi Campbell.. Just a bit in the drydown. 💙

bel.gravia

If you have any other cheap amber, you don't need this, trust me.

lenakles

Very warm, sweet vanilla and tonka bean scent. I also get a lot of almond from this. Lasting power is fine, it melts nicely with your skin and becomes a sweet nice well rounded scent. I guess I like it, but it's not a huge love for me. Just too warm. Almost feels like sauna to me in a way.. so the name kinda fits, I guess?!

MomGodess

Le Bain. When I got tired my signatures 3 years ago, I sniffed around and I smelt a very intriguing scent on one of my friends.
She forgot the name of her scent but she told me where she bought it. She knew it was Joop. So I found it quickly when I went to the store next day. It was odd. The package wasn't catchy and I just spayed on my wrist.
Later that day my new boyfriend - now my hubby held my hand and told me this is the best scent ever.
Next day I bought it. Let's face it, it is ridiculously cheap compared to designer brands.

That's the story now the scent:
I wouldn't have guessed that's it's a 90' child. It's not light but not cloying. Versatile. I bet you need a skin chemistry match for her. In the summer citrus/powdery in the winter cherry. Musk and vanilla all the way. Narcisso Rodriguez for her is very close in musk to this. Le Bain is less soapy. It's a female scent on my opinion, no unisex touch.
Good thing I do not feel the patchouli or at least not as strong-sour as in the most of the other scents.
I love the tonka amber base.
Also the top is interesting and unique. I have no idea how aldehydes smell but I guess that's it.
It goes well for sunscreen and in winter party cloves and cinnamon. Really anytime anywhere kinda fragrance.
I get a lot of compliments on it.
Sillage is sometimes strong some days close. Depending on weather/humidity.
Long lasting, but I love to refresh and since you don't have to rob a bank for it, I use it deliberately.
I definitely smell in the morning if I used the night before. It is very good from this category. Usually Chanel and Guerlain is not bringing this performance unless you buy the overpriced interense, extrait, absolute versions. So definitely worth the value.

It is incredible how it makes you clean (as the name suggests) and dirty due to the animalistic notes.
If I get hot/sweaty it turns even better on my skin. Like pheromones.

I have one last thought. I wore this scent when I conceived with our daughter (I know TMI) and she loves it on mammy too.

mellyv1973

What We Do in Paris is Secret smells so much like this, but better imho. However, this is an awesome, inexpensive alternative. This is a fresh vanilla scent that is nice for daytime in the spring & fall. Definitely nice for after a shower & bedtime too. An intimate perfume with moderate lasting power.

I'd been hearing good things about this and decided to try it, despite not being a huge fan of Joop!'s other fragrances. Le Bain, though, is not nearly as in-your-face synth-sweet as many of its cousins. It's actually quite light and lovely, and very aptly named: there's something clean and refreshing about it, perfect for a post-bath spritz. For me, the most prominent notes are tonka, rose, lemon, lily-of-the-valley, and musk, with a dusting of vanilla. It creates a very soothing, almost creamy aquatic-powdery-floral halo around the body, and is somehow both warm and cool. My formulation is neither very strong, nor very lasting. But that's okay; it's already become one of my favorite fragrances for early evening relaxation at home.

I used to absolutely love this years ago, it was one of my go-to scents for cooler days. Happily drifting in a warming, powdery, gorgeous cloud of comfort.

However, I bought this again for good old times' sake last week, and they must have changed the formulation. Where it used to smell natural and soft, it now has an added artificial, soury edge to it, and I couldn't bear it on my skin.

Ah well, times have changed.

Wear whatever you like! Life is too short to worry about other people's opinions! 🙂
Scent isn't inherently masculine or feminine. It's just society that conditions us.

I am a woman and my favourite scent on a man is vanilla-heavy perfumes: Ted Lapidus Altamir, Dior Homme Intense EDP, Rochas Man... Lucky for me, my hubby prefers these ones too 😊

This fragrance takes me back to 2014 and the 2nd ever fragrance I ever bought myself. I was on a school trip to the Cote d'Azur for watersports (more a holiday than anything). I were on the cross channel ferry to France and came across Le Bain amongst the rest of the Joop! mens fragrances, I tested them all and I preferred this the most. I absolutely loved it until I opened it on the bus and my school teacher asked who were wearing the womans fragrance, back then I were pretty sure it were a mens frangrance, after all, I were new to the frangrance game.

I found out a few years later, after looking to buy again it were in fact a females fragrance, either way, it reminds me of the beautiful French coast and the long journey through France and spotting Renault Twingo and Vel Satis! I will definitely buy again, even if it means I don't wear it! I also own a Renault Vel Satis myself now so maybe one day I can do the same trip again and use the fragrance on the way. Either way, Joop! Le Bain, you're a gem of a fragrance and a fragrance that will always be close to my heart. This is also the fragrance that reminds me of my first ever crush that I became close to on this trip, although we're now apart. Nostalgia and memories never die.

Cherry_Darling

Been eyeing this for months! Blind bought in a double blind buy splurge which I never do (whoops!) But I am not disappointed! It's gorgeous! Many have compared to Paris a lab on fire. I've smelled that, and yes in many ways it's similar - it's smooth, a little powdery, light and fluffy, and smells expensive. But Paris has a lot more rose and lychee inside. Overall this smells like it has a lot of heliotrope in it next to the Tonka and amber. I can easily use a full bottle, very easy to wear and surprisingly nothing synthetic about it. Everyday fragrance.

This is like E Coudrey's Ambre Vanille to my nose without the "old school" vibe.

nickyt99

I got this based on a few You Tuber’s reviews. Delicious Delights mentioned that it smelled like a baby’s bed - and I agree haha! Very comforting. I think it’s the tonka.

sparklyunicorn

It is difficult for me to imagine a more delicious, yummy scent. It is so delicate, soft, and lovely_ yet also strong and interesting. That realistic tobacco note is delicious and unique! I wish I would have known about this little gem sooner. I for one love this! Perfect for anytime really, but not a formal scent IMO. Lasting power was very good on me too!

Corvus Corone

Smells like smoking a Cherry Cigarillo in a Donut Shop. Lasts on my skin well, lasts on clothes a long long time with a pure tonka drydown.

ScentWayne

I’m so happy to have this beautiful scent in my collection, on my skin I get a warm spiced leather, the florals are there behind the spices and vanilla. It gives a sense of warmth and comfort. I have to be a bit heavy with the sprays as I love over spraying some fragrances. It’s beautifully blended.
The strength and longevity could be a wee bit better but this is easily one of the best Unisex scents out there.

mapache

Received my bottle today.

It MUST have been reformulated???

Or....maybe today is not the day for me to "test" it on my skin...???

I loved the first sniff....then ...it faded away ...so quickly !!!!!!!!

Right now...on my skin...it smells like a complete drydown of something I sprayed on HOURS ago !!

My batch code is 5173

I love the smell of this,so I need to apply it on a "different" day to really experience it ,I guess.
Now....I am wishing for an "older" version.....???

It was not easy to find this perfume, but I managed to find one net shop, ordered a gift set with 40 ml edp and a shower gel. It was a must-have blind buy :D
Paid 25 euros, so not bad!

First impression: My goodness this is strong, yes it is from the 80s! I thought I smelled cinnamon and tobacco, cherries - what a strong fragrance. I was a bit scared of it.. and then it settled on my skin and wow! I love this fragrance! It's the warmest and cosiest thing, perfect for September. Like a favourite warm sweater on a cold day. The shower gel is lovely after sauna.
I am happy I bought this, it's a special scent.

peonies and musk

I'm in loooove with this. Equal parts fresh and cozy. It smells 80 percent similar to Ulta's Brazilian Sunset mist, which is a dupe for Sol de Janeiro. Le Bain is just a bit creamier and more refined.

AdeleHugo

Blind bought this and it does not disappoint! Gorgeous unisex fragrance. This is very comforting, has a vanilla base but not in the yummy way— just warmth with some spice and amber. I was wondering how this would smell like a German fragrance and it makes sense, no frills or sweetness- just mature, tasteful. I would love to cuddle up with someone wearing this. I’m a woman and enjoy it on myself but would definitely find this sexy on a man.

forêt

This is gorgeous!! To me the resemblance with Ambre by L’Occitane is rather uncanny, but possibly I like this even better! I bought this because Sebastian’s Roumanian friend Dana had been haunted by the scent for 14 years after sniffing it somewhere until she finally learned what it had been.. Now I want to try all her cheapie picks from that video- there were some intriguing ones and another by Joop. Gonna do a lil side-by-side with Ambre now brb. Ok- so they are not identical and Ambre is more ambery but that sweet note is similar- anyway, wonderful fragrance!

Simonaell

Blind bought this one after watching youtubers rave about it.
Was verry disapointed when smelling it at first, but before selling it i tryed to wear it before bed. It completely changed my mind.
Absolutely adore this one now. So creamy and thick. If i could eat it i would. My boyfriend really likes it on me as well. Thick vanilla, citrus cream. Super cosy but never heavy. Yum!

LanaBella90210

A smooth, delicious vanilla-forward fragrance with a fluttering lemon kick at the background. I was immensely nervous reading that this carries among its notes the ingredient of aldehyde, but rest assured, it was not detected at all, or at least to my nose and skin chemistry. Truly, quite a timeless, classic beauty with a very affordable price tag and contemporary feel.

jule9

This was a blind buy for me, I was encouraged by the vanilla and tonka notes. For some reason, I don't feel tonka in this. For me there is a quick rush of aldehydes and amber and it dries down to a heavenly cherry-vanilla with a tiniest touch of cloves. Why I get these notes I don't know as they are not listed. I detect no musk. The vanilla is delicious, longevity is also enough for me (6-8 hours). This is a close-quarters fragrance. Very affordable. If you love vanilla and don't mind a dash of amber this should be a safe buy for you too.

EDIT: After using it for 3 years - still hasn't lost its beauty, but MAGNOLIA! This was the cherry-like note I felt in it. It smells of magnolia mixed with vanilla in the drydown. Love it.

dessybg

Много ми харесва ... незнам дали има ванилия, но оределено мирише на вишни или пък череши. Освен това има нещо пиперливо, което ми дразни носа и гърлото. Някакси имам усещането за нещо синтетично/изкуствено...

PeachK

I bought this on the recommendation of Sebastian from Smelling Great Fragrance Reviews on Youtube for fans of What We Do In Paris Is Secret. They are very, very similar. Le Bain is 1/4 to 1/3 the cost of WWDIPIS. The sillage on Le Bain is a little softer than WWDIPIS but not by much. I'm surprised that heliotrope is not listed as an ingredient for Le Bain since that is the main note in WWDIPIS. I sprayed one of these perfumes on each of my wrists and asked my daughters their opinion. My 18yo liked WWDIPIS better because it was stronger. My 20yo liked Le Bain better because she could smell the vanilla in it but was getting a playdough note from WWDIPIS. This made her laugh. Thankfully, I'm not one of those people who can smell playdough in WWDIPIS. If you are one of the people who get the playdough note in WWDIPIS, you might want to try Le Bain instead if you're looking for a perfume in the balsamic/warm powdery floral category.

Who would have thought something so random and accessible would smell so damn good?

Ignoring the list of notes presented here, what I get is the coziest cherry-almond-vanilla-tonka skin scent I've ever experienced. Not exactly a gourmand but anyone smelling this on you would likely lean in for a whiff or even a hug.

This is so much better than it has any right to be, especially at this ridiculous price (I paid approx $15 for a 2.5-ounce bottle). Smells like you've just taken a bath with the most deliciously scented soap on the planet. My only regret is that I didn't discover it sooner. This is my first wearing and I've already pulled the trigger on a back-up bottle.

tlusif

I blind-bought Joop Le Bain based upon a You Tube review and it does not disappoint. On me, this is a tonka bean and musk -forward Amber perfume that is balanced by floral and vanilla notes. There's a touch of Sandalwood and tobacco leaf in the dry-down. Le Bain earned a place in my gym bag, which means that I spray it multiple times a week...more than any of my other bottles. It deserves the accolades.
Performance: Sits close to the skin and last 4-ish hours. Definitely unisex. In fact, I'd love to smell this on my guy.

Jacklyn's Perfumery

I changed my mind about this fragrance. I got to smell it more in doors because when I first tried it I was outside but this is a really good tonka Cherry tobacco fragrance. It is balsamic still and thick but in a nice way but I could definitely smell it more intensely. And I can see why I got a compliment yesterday because even though it was ice cold this gentleman could still smell it on me. So it's got good sillage and the longevity is really good I could smell it for at least 6+ hours. So for 20 dollars you can't go wrong on this one! Joop products really do perform and last.

bruby15

Bought this today and love it. Was thinking for a few hours what it remind me of: Alien Essence Absolue!!

lrnonken

Strong and thick and long-lasting, to me the vanilla and tonka is overpowered by a sharp "medicinal" note that seems like woodruff or moth balls. It's also a smell that I associate with bathroom cleaners or urinal cakes... not the kind of "Le Bain" I want to smell like sadly.

Edit: The tonka-dominant dry-down is nice, but it takes 3 hours to get there

HeavyBeatsUK

Great baby powder smell with performance oomph

modernmabuse

A real classic, secret gem.

Kir Royal

This perfume is absolutely wonderful. Timeless, ageless, weightless.
My mother chose it as her signature scent and I adore it on her. It is like beige cashmere blanket wrapped around you, cosy, warm, comforting. Appropriate in every situation.

Tonka bean, soft balsamic amber, vanilla, fluffy inoffensive aldehydes and a hint of jasmine and sobering patchouli.
And it lasts...
And lasts...
And lasts...

gtabasso

This is amazing. Nothing like it. Great blind buy. Very balsamic and resinous. The neroli should be up top. It is very honeyed. Tonka, some sandalwood, light musk, some patchouli hidden to deepen, fizzy aldehydes and bergamot in the top. This is NOT vanilla. It is more about the tonka and the amber. Yes, there is an almost almond or amaretto quality that comes off a bit like a cherry tobacco.

;-)

This fragrance is much sweeter than I enticipated. Vanilla, tonkabean and amber makes it a gourmand on my skin. I do not appriciate the cherry note in the opening.
I miss Patchouli and darkness or something tart in this. Not my cup of tea, but a gem if sweet vanilla/tonka is what you want and it reacts on your skin as it does on mine

SalinasL

I wanted to like this so badly. Unfortunately, it smells like bug spray on me. It does fade to something warmer and sweeter after a while, but it takes its time. It’s also incredibly strong. The thing is, bug spray isn’t even a terrible smell for what it is and even brings back happy memories of summer and camping trips up north. But do I want to go to work or snuggle into bed smelling of bug spray? I’ll probably persist with this one in the hopes that either it will change in a different season or I will.

Edit 2023: I recently received the almond bath oil from L’Occitane as a gift and, despite finding it a bit masculine, enjoyed it as a very vintage-type bath scent. There was something familiar about it that unsettled me slightly but wasn’t necessarily bad. And then *JOOP!* it hit me: Le Bain! I still have this, where I banished it to the dirt pit under my house, and might try it again. Perhaps I am changing more than I thought.

Edit a few days later: I took the plunge (I went into the basement) and hesitantly put on Le Bain. And my memory did not deceive me, it smells like the L’Occitane “a l’huile d’amande” shower oil! I get it now, why people would like to smell like this.

fyrewoman

This strongly reminds me of Gaultier 2 which I used to have a bottle of but with an almond and cigar twist. I prefer this. There were times I loved Gaultier 2 but every other waft of it reminded me of industrial public bathroom cleaner.

Joop! Le Bain is less expensive and more rounded. A successful blind buy for me.

I watched a video review of this last year by a guy called 'fragrancematt.' He described JLB as being extremely unisex and having just acquired a 40ml bottle I'd totally agree.

To me this is a lovely warm balsamic and kind of boozy vanilla and tonka fragrance, this is what I get from the opening, no citrus in my nose! As the scent progresses the white floral notes (particularly orange blossom I believe) become more apparent, as such it arguably becomes a little more feminine, however given current tastes in the fragrance world it's all rather relative.

Joop Le Bain does in the beginning especially reminds me a little of Terre d'Evasion by Inessance, which is an absolutely astounding 'cheapie' fragrance that I own, balsamic and boozy it is the best cold weather fragrance I have and maybe the nicest I've ever smelled, it's been compared to Ambré Narguillé (which I haven't smelled as yet). Joop le Bain is certainly a little lighter and definitely less complex (and boozy) than that one, a little more feminine too perhaps but they share some lovely similarities.

I haven't given this a 'proper' wearing as yet so can't comment too much on performance but it seemed about average on the quick test I carried out. I'm really glad I picked this one up (at a great price too) so thank you fragrancematt (if you happen to read this)!

smellsbells

very very weak on me. All i get is pipe tobacco smell but faint and immediate skin scent..weird!

evapap181977

wonderful.such a cosy and sweet scent..i smell mostly honey and vanilla.on my skin has medium longevity but for the price it has i overspray it without guilt.this and the discontinued Nightflight are the best of everything else i ve smelled by Joop

jksfii

I love the warm, sweet opening, but it quickly takes on a cherry tabacco smell. Neither cherry or tobacco are listed in the notes, but as you'll see from the other reviews, it is a common opinion. I wishthe warm opening lasted as I'm not a fan of smelling like a cigarette! I think the tabacco note is fading so I'll see what it moves to later.

**** about a half hour has passed and the cherry tobacco is fading thankfully and being replaced with a cool floral note. Love how it's changing.

**** another half hour later the tonka and vanilla have arrived - yum ****

Forbiddenjade

This is an interesting fragrance, out of the ordinary!

For some reason, it strongly reminds me of the first Dolce & Gabbana - must be because much of the notes are identical.

Much softer, not so suffocating as that one - here it's a soothing, caressing, creamy/buttery scent which seals onto the skin.

Super longevity, great great sillage. Worth a try!

*note: best to walk into a cloud of it then to spray directly. It is very strong and takes time to settle, so the cloud helps to stick gently the fragrance*

i was introduced to the world of fragrances in my early teens, by my cousin and brother who are both 12 years older than me. first fragrances i can remember were my brother's opium by ysl and my cousin's jpg classique and givenchy amarige. one day she gave me a half empty bottle of joop le bain and it was an instant crush. it still brings me to my high school days and evokes nice memories of optimism and enchantment with life and youth, and when i tried it on today it still smelled like a high school girl wanting to be more. i don't know if all of that sentiment is making me bias, but i can't help puting this particular fragrance aside from all of the others in this price range. i have since those days had more fragrances than i can remember, and my taste is ever changing from light airy ozonics to vintage heavy florals, but i'm still quite fond of this one even though i never went back to it until now. it doesn't smell cheap to me. it might be a bit too simple for a woman in her 30s or over, but not at all cheap or sinthetic. it has a decent sillage and longetivity and it definitely brings all of the mentioned notes, not just vanilla. it's nice, creamy, sweet and boozy but not overwhelming.

schneeblume

I am testing Bettina Barty Vanilla and Joop! Le Bain on the left and the right and the Joop! one is definitely better: Less sharp, less flat, more perfume, less shampoo.

get the Twist

I am wearing this on a cosy December Sunday at home. I got this when I was on a hunt for almondy fragrances. I get totally the almond note, the warm soft vanilla, the musk and the tobacco/pipe scent. It's a comfort scent, very soft and not invasive. I think it's unisex. I am wearing this today, layered with L'Occitane "AMANDE Huile Souplesse" and the almond sweetness is beautifully enhanced!
I also use this one as a bedtime scent.
I recommend JOOP Le Bain to every almond lover!
